Percent of Alabama high school graduates enrolled at a 4-year college
The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) analysis of census data reports that national enrollments are projected to rise slowly over the next five years. The national peak of high school graduates is still expected to occur by 2026. Previously, that peak was expected to reach 3.56 million students; it is now estimated to reach 3.93 million. Estimates are that the rising tide will be primarily driven by an increased high school graduation population, which improvements in high school retention rates have driven. Projections vary by state and region. By 2026, high school graduates in the South will peak at 1.5 million, a +7.8% increase from 2022, followed by a steady decline. By 2026, Alabama’s graduating class will reach +53,000, a +5% increase from 2022. A steady decrease follows this; by 2030, the estimated total number of graduates will be 49,000, an 8.3% decline.
