This is the story of a small boat that ended up in the garden of a beautiful carmen in the old Arabic neighborhood of Albaicín, in Granada, SP. The carmen in located in Calle Larga de San Cristóbal, no: 31. From it’s gardens one can have a spectacular view of the cities old defensive walls, part of the old neighborhood and it’s green valley.

The boat started its trip from Scarlett’s mind to her garden in spring 2020. First, there was need for a hut to store tools used for gardening. There was also need for a dinning area, that complements carmen’s exterior kitchen but rather than that, there was a desire for a spot with an as panoramic as possible view to the old city’s part and to the valley with it’s marvelous sunset. At that time, Scarlett inspired by some fish-scales shape clay-tiles, came up with the idea of a big fish that lies next to carmen’s old water tank, So, fish’s head turned into boat’s deck. So, that’s how the boat and the gardener’s hut come into one unified design, Scarlett’s boat tool-house.
Let’s imagine someone using this space, living it. Let’s create a person in our mind! Well, the architect and writer of this text, me, Katerina, imagines a person that spends certain time everyday in Scarlett’s garden, taking care of the plants, the cultivations, the seeds, the animals. They learn by observing nature as well as by observing landscapes -including the ones inside their minds- and at the same time they are imaginative, creative. They are handcraftsman, they use all kind of tools, from carpenter’s chisels and hammers - to a poet’s pen - to a painter’s brush. They like dreaming in silence, under the rainy sky, they like resting next to their work, looking at it while closing their eyes and smiling. Pretty much someone like Scarlett. Now let’s observe space’s particular conditions: First, that’s not a house, it’s an auxiliary installation for outdoor activity, so there’s no need for walls with insulation although sometimes we may need a little bit of heat, during wintertime. For this reason, the design includes the recycling of Scarlett’s stove that liys in her cave in Sacromonte and she doesn’t use it there. Secondly, it’s important to take good advantage of space for storing things. For this, four kinds of storages are designed: 1. Wooden shelves on both sides of the entrance hanged with nautical rope from the ceiling, 2. Entire walls can be used to hang staff, 3. A loft, to store bigger things that are not in use daily, 4. A secondary room for machinery storage. A small desk and a sink are also included.
