Our Story

OUR STORY | 4

OUR MISSION Columbia Opportunity Resource (COR) connects young, talented professionals in the greater Columbia area to diverse and meaningful networks for leadership, service and fun.

OUR HISTORY COR was formed in 2004 through a collaborative partnership between the City of Columbia and a group of impassioned young leaders looking to create positive change by connecting Columbia’s Creative Class into the social, civic and professional fabric of the community. They researched communities and organizations around the country and took a road trip to meet with leaders of Mpact Memphis, one of our sister organizations. A launch party was held in 2005 that attracted more than 500 attendees from across the Midlands. Since then, COR has established itself as a portal for community involvement; a pathway for leadership development; an advocate by pushing policies and issues important to young professionals; and a viable outlet for social enrichment. In 2009, a partnership was formed between EngenuitySC, the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Midlands Authority for Sports, Conventions and Tourism, New Carolina and Southern Growth Policies Board to establish the Columbia Talent Magnet Project; an initiative to attract, engage and retain students, new arrivals and young professionals into the Greater Columbia region. The project brought new energy, resources and leadership along with a renewed focus around COR’s efforts. In 2010, COR re-launched as the community’s resource for engaging and connecting the “next generation” in Columbia through a strategic partnership with the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

Today, COR is a dynamic, member-driven organization, fulfilling our mission by: Connecting our members with aspirational and p eer mentors; Serving as a bridge between nonprofits and young professionals to help place our members into positions of servant and civic leadership; Organizing and promoting unique volunteer opportunities; Championing Columbia as a unique and exciting place to live. Meanwhile, we’re raising volunteer, philanthropic, employment, connectivity, retention, satisfaction and happiness rates among young professionals.

OUR STORY | 5

HOW WE DO IT Connectivity should be tangible; you should be able to touch it, feel it and understand its impact on your life. COR is passionate about connecting Columbians to their community. We do this through three program focus areas:

LEADERSHIP: COR is working with business, nonprofit and civic leaders to ensure a sustainable future for our community through identifying, nurturing and connecting the next generation of leaders. The charge is simple – connect young professionals with aspirational and peer mentors and marry them to leadership service opportunities in the community.

WHY WE EXIST Our raison d’être is simple: We’re focused on attracting, engaging and retaining talent in the Midlands. We create connectivity among young professionals, entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and creatives and the community they call home. By doing so, we increase retention and make Columbia a better place for everyone to live, learn, work, play and prosper. It then becomes a virtuous circle as the mission becomes a cause and the cause becomes a movement. Columbia ultimately is a better thriving urban environment that provides peak experiences for all its citizens.

WE BELIEVE Vibrant networks attract, retain and motivate talented people. Motivated and talented people create exciting communities. Exciting communities continually renew their talent pool.

SERVICE: COR wakes up thinking about how to connect the next generation of Columbians to their community through volunteerism, service and philanthropy. Volunteerism offers a quadruple win: it allows COR members to be a part of something bigger than themselves, while making a difference in the lives of someone or some organization; to become actively connected with the community and the issues it faces; to feel good about time well spent; and to expand their network with like-minded people. Research shows communities with higher rates of volunteerism are not only faring better during the recession but are also experiencing greater retention and recruitment rates among young professionals. COR is fostering a culture of stewardship. FUN: SOCIAL & CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT: COR is passionate about all assets that make Columbia a unique, world class city. While our partner, the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism, promotes Columbia outside, the region, we’ve made it our mission to promote Columbia to Columbians. From arts, culture, food and nightlife to outdoor recreation, lifelong learning, and social/ professional networking…COR connects you to your peak experience in Columbia.

COR for the Community

COR FOR COMMUNITY | 12

TALENT MATTERS FOR COLUMBIA Now more than ever, engaging the next generation is about economic development. And it is more than that… it is about creating a world class city, a talent magnet, a sticky community that attracts and retains the best and the brightest. For Columbia to prosper, it must cater to the creative class with coffee shops, green spaces, bike trails, independent music, a voracious cultural scene, a robust nightlife and plenty of opportunities for lifelong service and learning. But don’t take our word for it:

We are faced with a wholly new economic reality where talent no longer follows industry. In fact, the reverse is true and will be true for the foreseeable future because, as the Millennials represent a demographic wave larger than the Baby Boomers, this trend will impact our city and our nation for better or worse for the next 50 years or longer. …People are looking for a sense of place when they decide where they will live and bring their time, talents and treasures. Together we must create that sense of place in Columbia. City of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, 2013 State of the City Address

Where you live is now more important than almost everything else in a person’s life. Richard Florida,Who’s Your City, 2009

BOTTOM LINE OPPORTUNITIES Young professionals are an economic engine for the Columbia MSA. Attracting and retaining talent creates wealth, vibrancy and energy for our community’s future. A 1% increase in the number of college educated people in our community translates to more than $534 million in annual regional income for the Columbia MSA. A college educated worker will earn $1.2M more over their lifetime than a worker with a high school diploma alone. (Moore School of Business, Division of Research) The difference in unemployment between the college educated workforce and the high school educated workforce is almost 10%; college educated workers get and keep better jobs. With an educational attainment rate of 31%, Columbia is well behind the most prosperous regions in the country; equating to more than $63 billion in lost economic impact in the since 2001. A 1% increase in the volunteerism rate for Columbia equates to more than $4.1 million in annual community impact. Columbia is ranked 55th out of 75 regions for volunteerism. (Volunteer America) A 2010 Knight Foundation study found a positive correlation between community attachment and economic prosperity; the more connected citizens are to their community, the more prosperous that community will be.
