An Evening with
Circles Around th e Sun THU JAN 3 Circles Around the Sun was
commissioned by Justin Kreutzmann (the filmmaker son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann), to accompany set break biographical visuals shown during the 2015 Fare Thee Well reunion concerts by the surviving members of the Grateful Dead. The music felt deeply familiar to reunited Deadheads — tonally, rhythmically and melodically mimicking the Dead’s songs, yet possessing its own weirdo majesty. Some pieces were explicit in their reverence, while others applied the Dead’s freewheeling modus operandi and took their own course with imaginative musical turns. It’s a perfect distillation of the group’s fusion-filled 1973-74 jams by a band growing into its own celestial sound. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 12/27: $30. Regular: $35
Shane Smith & th e Saints
SAT JAN 12 Singer-songwriter Shane Smith leads this hard-edged, Austin-based Americana quintet, robust with powerful vocals exerting a cappella and four-part harmonies, vivid lyrics, and thumping four-beat drums. Aggressive in their delivery, their creative roots music carries a raw country edge that makes the barn-burner feel like arson. They unleash incendiary shows, ignited by the band’s ability to draw from and feed back to the energy of the crowd. They lit Alpenglow on fire this summer, so we’re bringing ‘em back for more. 8:00 p.m. Early Bird through 1/5: $25. Regular: $30
