MON JUN 23 Benton Blount It’s Southenglow! Kick off the Alpenglow Summer Concert Series in Crested Butte South with country artist Benton Blount. “As country as cornbread” is how he explains himself, and his roots from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina shine through in his real-life stories spun with a positive outlook. Benton’s gruff voice belies tender love songs like “Carolina” just as much as through “I Don’t Have to Prove I’m County.” At Red Mountain Park in Crested Butte South. Food Vendor: Ruben’s. MON JUN 30 Swing Je T’aime A swing band unconfined, Swing Je T’aime boasts gypsy fire, classical virtuosity and a hip blend of old and new. Upbeat jazz sets the stage. Classical nuances add drama. A touch of pop brings zest and spunk, while French undertones and Brazilian beat give the music an exotic flare. Blending classic favorites, unburied treasures, and innovative, original songs Swing Je T’aime pulls its influence from the legendary trailblazer Django Reinhardt to the genre-bending Pink Martini.

MON JUL 7 The Ballroom Thieves The Ballroom Thieves is truly a high-energy rock trio performing under the guise of wellcrafted, emotionally sincere folk. Their coherent sound reflects a gritty, frenetic vivacity that could easily be mistaken for a whiskey-filled revival tent setting. With deeply personal lyrics and a gradual, lit-fuse-like build, The Thieves deliver dazzling three-part harmonies, expressive lyricism and deft instrumentation with raw infectious passion. MON JUL 14 The Main Squeeze The Main Squeeze is a raging funk experience. Their live performances at festivals such as Bonnaroo fuse soulful vocals, intricate jams, tight grooves and ripping solos, showcasing their ability to tackle and funkify a wide variety of music. Their eclectic blend of inspiration seamlessly navigates through funk, rock, electro and jazz while still rooting itself in a sound that is uniquely their own.

MON JUL 21 Selasee & Fafa Family Born in Accra, Ghana, Selasee grew up exposed to the colorful and energetic sounds of Highlife Music. From this he created his own style — a creative blend of Reggae, West African Highlife and American Pop music. Threading together English and West African lyrics for a bright and captivating sound won him Independent Music Award’s “Best World Fusion” honor. Selasee has shared the stage with reggae legends like Steel Pulse, the Wailers and Third World.

MON JUL 28 Turkuaz At the forefront of the new funk evolution is Turkuaz — a nine piece power funk army with a modern twist on the classic genre. With the obvious influences of Parliament, Sly & The Family Stone, Rick James and Earth, Wind & Fire as the basis for a recipe, Turkuaz adds healthy doses of jittery, world-pop-dance groove and a passion for Motown and R&B into the mix, resulting in a refreshingly funky freight train of sound.

8/4 DVS (Dillon, Vidacovich & Singleton)

MON AUG 4 DVS (Dillon, Vidacovich & Singleton) This New Orleans based jazz trio finds Mike Dillon joining Astral Project greats Johnny Vidacovich and James Singleton in an experimental sound grounded in solid experience. Quintessential improvisational drum maestro Johnny has played with legends like Professor Longhair. James, the most sought bassists in the Crescent City, has performed with Skerik, Stanton Moore and Ellis Marsalis. The intense and complex Mike Dillon on vibraphone and tablas also plays with Critters Buggin’ and Garage a Trois. Together they explore the art of the trio with a depth that few can.

7/21 Selasee & Fafa Family

MON AUG 11 Madame Sin Madam Sin combines rock, jazz, blues and soul elements into an imaginative sound which can only be described as 100% wicked. Long time collaborators Sean Bresloff (drums) and Jon Rise (guitars) lay down the foundation, with Shannon Fine (vocals), Brandon Stewart (horns), Sarah Mount (horns) and Ben Horton (bass). This six-piece unit is a throwback to the Vaudeville days of soulful and accomplished musicians that collectively create beautiful and complex music. MON AUG 18 The Brothers Comatose Join us for an Alpenglow Encore at the USA Pro Challenge Block Party on Second and Elk. String-based Brothers Comatose play every live show as a sing-along, stomp-along with a generous, inclusive and rowdy attitude. They’ve skillfully brought their strong bluegrass-influenced folk rock to large festivals such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, High Sierra Music Festival and South by Southwest while still maintaining that intimate music party feel. 8/18 The Brothers Comatose

MON AUG 11 Dean Ween & Glenn McClelland of Ween with Brothers Keeper Ween was the ultimate cosmic goof of the alternative rock era, a prodigiously talented 8/11 Dean Ween & Glenn McClelland and deliriously odd duo displaying a mastery for seemingly every mutation of the musical spectrum. Bratty deconstructionists, they kicked dirt on the pop world around them with razorsharp satire and hilariously acute savagery. With the book closed on Ween in 2012, the Ween “brothers” have gone to pursue their own solo projects. As such, Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo and Ween keyboardist Glenn McClelland join Rock & Roll trio Brothers Keeper with Ween classics, new Dean Ween tunes and songs from Brothers Keeper’s upcoming release. The core of Brothers Keeper is Scott Rednor (guitar), Michael Jude (bass), and John Michel (drums), with a formula of collaborating with a rotating musician. They have concocted music on stage and in a new album with John Popper (Blues Traveler), Jono Manson (a pioneer of the Nightingales / Wetlands uprising that spawned Phish, Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors) and DJ Logic. 9:00 p.m. $18 early bird / $22 week of. SUN AUG 24 Jeff Austin and The Here & Now Mandolinist Jeff Austin is fiercely magnetized towards the pace, the speed and the aggressiveness of the live bluegrass music he creates. Famous as a founding member of the wild and high-energied Yonder Mountain String Band, Jeff became celebrated for his fleet fingers and penchant for improvisation on stage. Now, he propels into a new creative direction, stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist. Here, Austin’s songwriting remains rooted in Americana inspiration paired with the frantic energy of the jam genre and a sheer love of storytelling. Jeff is accompanied by The Here & Now, comprised of revered punk rock banjo player Danny Barnes, exhilarating acoustic flatpicking guitarist Larry Keel, and the grounding bass of Jenny Keel. 8:00 p.m. $20 early bird / $25 week of. THU SEP 11 Patrick Sweany A Patrick Sweany set can veer from soulful, slow burn, John Lee Hooker-style blues, to swampy, delta-country pickin’, to white-hot rockabilly. His righteous guitar licks and deep, smooth vocals can travel through a slinky R&B, early Rock & Roll, ‘70‘s blues rock, folk-blues or a dirty garage blues. Patrick’s roots stretch to fingerpicking along to folk-blues giants like Leadbelly and Lightnin’ Hopkins, helping him to develop a part Piedmont, part Delta style. Combined with his love of 50’s era soul and rock fused with adrenaline-soaked garage punk, Esquire says, “This is the kind of music Robert Johnson sold his 9/11 Patrick Sweany soul for way back when.” He’s supported other blues rockers such as the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Hot Tuna and featured at festivals nation-wide including the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. 8:00 p.m. $15 early bird / $20 week of.

Garland Middleton focuses on processed-based techniques — exhibiting not only on the finished product, but all of the steps it took to get there. Her main mediums are watercolors and inks. She finds inspiration in colors and patterns of the natural world, as well as shapes and designs of the man-made world. Laura Elm is a master potter and painter. Elegant forms and expert drawing are developed from analytical observation of the natural world and then re-tooled, tweaked and intensified imaginatively. Inspired by classic literature and Garland Middleton & Laura Elm: Modus Operandi romantic poetry, common features in her work include a strong graphic use of black and white, the sun and moon, and time. At the Art Studio Gallery. Artist Receptions: 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 28 & Thursday, July 24 in association with ArtWalk. Free. MON JUN 2 – MON JUN 16 Katie Hadar-Meade: “Dancers” Dancers is a mixed media installation combining video projection, sound sculpture, and three dimensional drawing. It is a piece about time and space. It treats physical and digital space — the interaction and collective influence on contemporary life. The human body occupies a physical space, it moves in one direction through time. When we manipulate representation with capture and distribution, we place emphasis on events and give them a chance at eternal existence — an impossibility for the human vessel due directly to the march of time. Hear Katie speak about her work at ArtTalk. Visit the Art Studio entry of page 17 of this brochure for more information. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. with an ArtTalk at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 10. Free.

While most of Brent’s work is based in realism, he has also experimented with some abstract interpretations, such as with wildflowers and mountaintops. Because of his love of and extensive background in movies, he began painting movie related pieces. Most recently, he has been recreating classic book covers such as Of Mice and Men or Life of Pi. His wide array of friends has encouraged him to push the limits of his abilities and think on a Brent Laney: “The World I Know — An Exploration of Pop Art” larger scale. In the desolate, rugged, and isolated Pamir region of Tajikistan, Marco Polo sheep inhabit rocky slopes at elevations nearing 20,000 feet. Hear John speak about his work at ArtTalk. Visit the Art Studio entry of page 17 of this brochure for more information. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. with an ArtTalk at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday July 2. Free. GALLERY SHOWS

MON JUL 21 – MON JUL 28 Joe Newton: “Americana” Joe’s uniquely original images create mystery. Abstract photos tell the viewer’s eye to ask “What is that photo of? Where was it taken? What do you call it?” Joe carefully selects certain images that help to create a story for the audience to use their imagination and to show his passion. Always inspired by American innovative design, each photo (or group of photos) in this exhibit tells a story about Americana. Prints are archival giclee’ on hahnemule photo rag giving a quality of contrast, texture and color that draws the viewer into an experience rather than a fleeting expression. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 22. Free.

Janet Tsou & Cora La Grange: Friends & Neighbors

MON JUL 28 – MON AUG 4 Janet Tsou & Cora La Grange: “Friends & Neighbors” Cora and Janet are neighbors who discovered their mutual love of art, their friendship growing on painting excursions throughout the Gunnison Valley. Cora’s watercolor and oil work travel between the landscapes and neighborhoods of the Gunnison River Valley and the Sonoran Desert. They express the color and motion found in nature, and reflect the joy that comes from allowing your spirit to be drawn into the moment by the process of painting. Janet’s works include her abstract paintings of watercolor, acrylic, pencil, charcoal and monotype print making. She gets her inspiration from passion for reading, traveling and the love for nature. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29. Free.

MON JUL 28 – SAT OCT 4 Laura Elm: “Truth or Dare — Drawing, Painting & Clay Work” Drawing, painting & clay work inspired by humorous bon mots such as “Truth is rarely pure and never simple.” The premise is to dare viewers to see the obvious and the subliminal found in a variety of seemingly unconnected images. Pattern and repetition allow the viewer to contemplate the meditative qualities of color and form which evolve over time. Unusual juxtapositions are designed to create a mysterious response defined by the viewer’s own interpretation. Laura Elm is a master potter and painter whose expressive work is brilliantly detailed and multifaceted inspired by classic literature and romantic poetry. At the Art Studio Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 25 in association with ArtWalk. Free.

Melissa Belkin: I Have Dreamt of a Place Like This

pipergallery@crestedbuttearts.org

MON AUG 4 – MON AUG 11 Melissa Belkin: “I Have Dreamt of a Place Like This” During a drought year, the flowers that Crested Butte is famous for were not as abundant as usual. While hiking Frigid Air Pass, Melissa was thoroughly disappointed. At the top of the last hill she stumbled onto an amazing field of Indian Paintbrush. It was a true moment of pure joy. The only thing she could mutter as she fell to her knees was “I have dreamt of a place like this.” This show features a number of her dreams come true in the photographs she has taken on her many hikes and adventures. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 7. Free.

GALLERY SHOWS

MON AUG 11 – TUE AUG 26 John Fielder: “In Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act” John Fielder is Colorado’s best-known photographer, working tirelessly to promote the protection of Colorado’s ranches, open space, and wildlands during his 33-year career as a renowned nature photographer and publisher. His photography has influenced people and legislation, earning him the Sierra Club’s Ansel John Fielder: In Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Adams Award in 1993 and the Aldo Wilderness Act Leopold Foundation’s first Achievement Award given to an individual in 2011. High Country Conservation Advocates (HCCA) hosts the show in Crested Butte, consisting of ten of John Fielder fine art Limited Edition Framed Photographs of Colorado wilderness areas. The exhibit is part of a traveling show of Fielder’s work, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Fielder explains, “The show will honor our country’s highest form of land protection with a goal to affect future wilderness designations by Congress.” Prints of the photographs, special edition Wilderness 50th posters, and the new edition of Fielder’s acclaimed book, Mountain Ranges of Colorado will be available for purchase. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12. Free. Also, don’t miss John Fielder at ArtTalk, Sunday, July 20 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for $10 at Eleven’s Scarp Ridge Lodge at 512 Second Street. A special pre-reception will be held from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. for $45. Please visit the Art Studio entry of page 17 of this brochure for more information. WED AUG 27 – MON SEPT 8 J.C. Leacock & Lian Canty: “Lyrical Forms” Lyrical Forms is an “Exploration of Feminine Forms through Paintings and Luthiery.” This exhibit combines Lian Canty’s figurative oil paintings and J.C. Leacock’s handmade guitars as an elegant and emotional expression of the intimate female form. Lian found the colors, patterns, and flowing floral arrangements of an antique wallpaper book gave an unconscious platform to the emotional intent of figures. Subtle emotions scream out with people as flowers portraying human characteristics. Using a glazing technique of transparent layers of colors applied on top of each other, she found depth and illumination and the ability to hide objects from first glance. Widely published photographer J.C. Leacock turns his attentions to building the “perfect guitar.” The combinations of wood, shapes, and bracing all contribute immeasurably to both the artistic and acoustic results. The creative possibilities, both visually and sonically, are endless. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 28. Free. MON SEPT 8 – MON SEPT 22 Garret Bock: “Spirit of the Wilderness Act” The show includes vibrant artwork showcasing the landscapes, animals, and beauty the law of the Wilderness Act has helped preserve. Garret is a printmaker, and has produced a body of work about Crested Butte and its wild areas that encapsulates the spirit of The Wilderness Act. The show features woodcuts of the landscapes surrounding Crested Butte, hand drawn maps of the Gunnison Country, and one-of-a-kind prints that were created in the wilderness. Garret’s show is sponsored by the High Country Conservation Advocates (HCCA) in celebration of the 50th anniversary of this act. At the Piper Gallery. Artist Reception: 5:00 – Garret Bock: Spirit of the Wilderness Act 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 8. Free.
