The Art of Cultivating Simple Pleasures and Living Well
Stepping
into Summer J
Just when you thought it was safe to take a vacation, something is keeping you tethered right where you are. An approaching deadline, home improvements, a tight budget. Aside from all that, who’s going to feed the dogs while you’re gone? Coordinating time off can be stressful; the hassle-free vacation is illusory for many. Far be it from us to dissuade you from hopping on a plane to Hawaii, but you don’t need a boarding pass to satisfy the urge to escape. When you feel like getting away, try getting out—of the house, that is. The time is ripe for outdoor entertainment and relaxation. Now first things first. Open that door. Exercise and socialization are vital components for keeping fit and staying sane, and we’re more likely to be doing both when the weather is nice. Playing outside isn’t just for kids. Outdoor games enable people of all ages Continued on page 10.
Easy summer recipes take the heat out of the kitchen and put flavor and fun into every bite. See page 14 for recipes.
In the past, we shared with you how to create sanctuaries—places that offer peace and quiet from the hectic pace of daily life. During the summer, outdoor sanctuaries provide the added benefits of sunlight and fresh air. Clockwise from top left: 1] Under a pavilion roof, you can spend time outdoors while enjoying respite from the sun. New Image Roofing & Construction custom built this 14’ x 18’ pavilion to fit in with the home’s existing roofline. It is made from cedar wood and stands on a paver patio with wood pillars set in paver bases. The stone and wood structure functions as a solid anchor point in the backyard. 2] This backyard imports a little Far East charm into a Midwestern landscape. The deck’s wooden stairway leads down into the backyard, where a quaint Asian-style bridge arches through the garden. The homeowners consulted a color specialist before deciding on Cape Cod Red to match the roses in their garden. CertaPro Painters of Wichita East power washed the vinyl deck before expertly applying Deckscapes Solid Stain with hand brushes and rollers. The completed project looked like a suitable place for an outdoor family wedding, and that’s exactly what the homeowners used it for. 3] The natural look of wood sometimes speaks for itself. What we love about this patio is that all of the woodgrain, knots, and hues make each plank and post unique. It’s wonderfully rustic without looking old or unfinished. You can get that look by treating your raw materials right. Thanks to the care with which Wood Savers applied the natural color stain and sealer, this patio will retain its original color and be protected from ultraviolet light damage for years to come.

ocated two miles north of Strong City on Kansas Highway 177, the panoramic view offered by the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is something to behold. And then there’s the quiet. Except for the tissuepaper whispering of the windswept grass, the calm itself is an expanse. A few buffalo and artificial structures provide the only evidence that some living things have found this geography useful. But don’t be fooled. For many millennia, the prairie had much to offer people and animals, and it continues to support over two hundred species. The area’s backstory begins over two hundred million years ago, when the shallow waters of the Permian Sea swept over Kansas. From the seabed emerged limestone and flint. As time passed and the land became dry, prairie grass

Birds, Bees, and Me Backyard bird watching is the second most popular outdoor hobby, quickly closing the gap on gardening. The two are so closely related that it is inevitable that more and more people are combining their two favorite outdoor activities to produce bird gardens designed to bring delight to gardeners and birds alike. Few of us have the opportunity to restore 10,000 acres of woodland to its natural condition, but we can still contribute to recreating healthy habitat. With some attention and care, we can make our little piece of the

world a better place for wildlife and for the people that respect and delight in it. Bird gardens do that and more: They also increase your daily exposure to birds and other wildlife, provide a calm center for your yard and create a visual delight for your eyes. Creating a bird-friendly garden is a fairly simple matter. Feeders, birdbaths, nest boxes, and other garden amenities provide a focal point. You will also want to learn how to select and place bird-friendly plants. There Continued on page 7. 2

Burnell’s Fine Jewelry and Design continues to be a local trendsetter with innovative jewelry designed for today, but made for a lifetime. Fresh from market, Burnell’s has an abundance of stunning new designs to offer customers the most imaginative and flat-out gorgeous jewelry in Wichita.
F
or more than thirty-four years now, Burnell’s has enjoyed an unmatched reputation for carrying the widest range of innovative and exciting jewelry designs by top designers from around the world. “Just when you think you’ve seen it all,” says Robin Lies, co-owner of Burnell’s Fine Jewelry and Design, “a familiar designer breaks out with something truly attention-grabbing. For example, take the exquisite new designs from signature designer Frederic Sage,” says Lies. “It’s been quite a while since we’ve found a new look that’s as impressive as these. They clearly are created
with the modern woman in mind, but with a style that’s destined to last a lifetime.” But that’s not all that they found at the annual Las Vegas national jewelers show. The store is brimming with an abundance of stunning new designs, as well as many less expensive pieces. “If it’s been a while since you’ve shopped at Burnell’s, you’ll find that we’ve really replenished the store’s inventory,” says Lies. And while this store’s top-of-the-line, readymade jewelry is always exquisite, Burnell’s Fine Jewelry and Design is consistently acclaimed for extraordinary jewelry wholly designed and made by their inhouse master jewelers. They’ve won more than fifty–five national jewelry design awards by creating
Behind the Counter Working with fine jewelry comes naturally to Garren Ayers. When he was a young boy, his family called him “Mr. Fix-it.” Later, when he began working in jewelry stores, his curiosity about how things work led him to learn the ropes in every aspect of the business. Ayers started in sales, managed a few stores, and even ran his own shop at one time. Along with his academic training, he gained practical knowledge from working with master jewelers over the years. Additionally, his lifelong interest in making things work, or function anew, gave him the solid foundation to handle the myriad kinds of repairs, refinishing, and refurbishing jobs that he’s been doing successfully for more than seventeen years at Burnell’s. “Every day brings something different,” says Ayers. “Each piece has its own variables. It may be a unique design or a specific technique, but it’s never boring. In fact, most of the time it seems like a hobby,” he observes with a smile.

some of the most innovative and dazzling jewelry in the country. “We’re passionate about giving our customers an enjoyable jewelry experience,” says Lies. “We believe that providing the highest level of personal service, uncompromising quality, and great value is why Burnell’s continues to be the leader in Wichita.” For a summer’s afternoon of delightful browsing or buying some of the most spectacular fine jewelry around, visit Burnell’s Fine Jewelry and Design in the Mill Creek Shopping Center, 550 N Rock Rd, 634.2822, or visit Burnells.com
Kitchen & Bath Gallery brings new life to an early Wichita home with a custom remodel that restored its original charm and character One of the major goals for these homeowners was to maintain the integrity of the house.
A
nd that’s the perspective that Mark Combs, Kitchen & Bath Gallery’s co-owner and designer, appreciated most about this project. “Working in a house that has such a great history, and with homeowners who value and respect that, made the entire process a real joy.” Although the house had undergone remodels in the past, “none of them had quite captured the essence of what the house could be,” says the homeowner. “It needed a new perspective that could bring it up-to-date, yet also preserve and protect its original nature. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Kitchen & Bath Gallery and Design Studio, Ltd., we ended up with a space that has a relaxed sense of comfort and authenticity that enhances the home’s best qualities.” To create greater outdoor/indoor egress, the back wall was moved out and a wall of French doors was installed. Paned, transom windows above echo the glass display cabinets that top the custom bead board cabinetry throughout the kitchen. White subway tile was selected for the backsplash to help keep the feel of a farmhouse kitchen. Simple pewter hardware also “just fit the old farm design,” says the owner. As did the pendant lighting over the island and chandelier above the antique French table The other major change to the structure of the kitchen was replacing a smaller island, with corner posts that went to the ceiling, with an expansive new island that accommodates seating and a professional cooktop. A soothing combination of cream colored custom cabinetry and molding and soft green walls were enhanced with stunning Absolute Black granite, which was given a unique, smooth brushed finish. “It invites you to run your hand over it again, and again,” says the homeowner. “I love to cook, and now I have a space that invites what my family refers to as ‘mom’s kitchen potpourri’—the welcoming aroma of fresh baked goods.” To learn more about how Kitchen & Bath Gallery can give your home the look it deserves stop by their showroom at 2823 E. athy Haines, owner of Designers Expo, is noticing a growing relationship between her clients and the things they buy when it’s time to update the home. Knowing a product means more than knowing a brand name.
“People are interested in how materials are produced, where they come from, and what kind of an impact they have,” Haines says. If customers are courting which products would look best in their homes, then
Mirage Hardwood Floors is the belle of the home improvement ball. In partnership with manufacturer Boa-Franc, this Canada-based company is a role model for sustainable development in the flooring industry. Mirage uses 95 percent of every tree it cuts. Leftover scraps are compressed into fiberboard and particleboard, sold as kindling and bedding for farm animals, or used to fuel boilers that dry the wood. Even the bark is repurposed as mulch. Nothing goes to waste. Stacking sticks, packaging material, glue drums, and old office computers—it all gets reused or recycled. “They recycle everything. And you still get a superior-quality product without compromising the environment,” Haines says. Mirage has been recognized for the excellence of its floors multiple times in the

past decade. It is an eight-time winner in retail surveys that identify outstanding floor coverings. Besides starting with the finest raw materials to be found in North America, Mirage stays at the cutting edge of the industry in two notable ways: first, by using nanotechnology to create a long-lasting finish that is hypoallergenic and formaldehydefree; second, by offering customers Mirage Lock flooring, whereby floor boards interlock with one another. No nails, no staples, no glue. With an estimated 1,500 clients a week comes the obligation of acquiring nature’s resources in a responsible way. Recognizing that wood is the only renewable construction material, Mirage makes sure that where mature trees are cut, saplings will later grow. The company has joined the fight against illegal logging through its support of the Lacey Act and has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits for efficient production. For its environmental stewardship, Mirage has won the Tree Foundation of Canada’s Eterne Award. “More designers and builders are opting for greener products,” says Haines, “and I love the fact that I can provide them with something like this. It’s good for the earth, for the people who handle it, and most importantly, for the people who are going to be living with it.” For information on installing Mirage Hardwood Floors in your home, call Kathy Haines at 267.1982 or stop by her showroom at Designers Expo, 1409 E Douglas Ave. Their website is DesignersExpollp.com

A Peaceable Kingdom Birds, Bees, and Me, from page 2 are many good resources that will help you enjoy bird gardening, including the local library, garden clubs, nurseries, and the Internet. Ask yourself how each decision you make contributes to the basic survival needs of songbirds. Does this plant provide a source of food? Is that pond designed so that water is accessible to small birds? Does the yard have plants that provide cover for protection and nesting? Are you choosing plants that are native to your area? Your bird garden will be a source of satisfaction for years to come. You know the feeling when you see a new bird for the first time? You want to share it with someone who will be as thrilled and impressed as you are. In the same way, when you create a good space for the birds, a yard that provides the essentials in a healthy way or a patio garden that offers a good stopping point for butterflies, you want to share that achievement too. You can even certify your habitat with the National Wildlife Federation. The requirements are simple, and the process will help you understand what you have accomplished to date and what still needs to be done. Don’t be intimidated by the scope of the task. The birds and other wildlife won’t wait until you’re done to make use of your newly renovated habitat; they will appreciate each step along the way as a better place to live. Here are some things to ponder as you begin to create your habitat. Have you ever thought about what your lawn service is spraying on your lovely green lawn and how it may affect you and the other creatures that live there? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against the ease of the service but we can hope the trend of “dowsing” our yards with chemicals becomes a bit greener and environmentally responsible in the near future. It may be that the insect pest you are targeting is a food source for the great number of insect eating birds that frequent our yards at this time of year. House Wrens, Orioles, Carolina Wrens, Grey Catbirds, Purple Martins, Brown Thrashers and Eastern Bluebirds are just a few of the species that are constantly foraging for insects to feed their hungry nestlings and are dependent on the abundance of life in your yard. Even Cardinals, who eat almost exclusively seeds, feed their young many insects because they grow faster on the extra protein! Continued on page 13. Summer 2014

T
he patriotic navy bean rightfully deserves a tiny space in our chest of National Treasures. You won’t find another legume that has served in the United States Senate since 1903—well, serving its appetite, anyway. Navy bean soup has been the only item permanently featured on the Senate Dining Hall’s menu for more than a century. It’s not clear who instituted the tradition, but the dish has been such a regular that we know of just one day when it was not made to order: September 14, 1943—the height of World War II. This lapse made it into the news the next morning. According to the Washington Times Herald, wartime rations were to blame for not enough beans in the pantry. The service record of navy beans dates back to the mid-1800s. Their nutritional value and long shelf life made them a perfect staple in the mess decks of naval ships back then. They got their name for that reason. You may also hear them called haricot beans, pea beans, Yankee beans, or Boston beans. Mild in flavor, their dense and creamy texture hold up during the cooking process, which makes them suitable for baked bean recipes, spreads, soups, and pies. Yes, even pies. Beans in your pie may not sound appetizing, but this dessert continues to pleasantly surprise those who are willing to try it. However you enjoy navy beans, feel good that you’re getting a hearty helping of fiber and protein. Navy beans are also rich in iron, folic acid, and magnesium. A single cup provides almost 25 percent of the daily value of thiamin (vitamin B1), which is good for keeping your brain sharp. If buying navy beans in bulk, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place. Thoroughly rinse and soak them overnight before cooking. Buying them canned is OK, too. Unlike other canned veggies, navy beans will not have lost most of their nutrients. For Boston Baked Beans recipe, see page 15. Summer 2014

Stepping into Summer, from cover to have fun while burning calories and managing stress. They are essential for developing and honing a whole range of skills, including coordination, endurance, motor function, and self-confidence. We recommend some of the classic lawn games, like badminton, croquet, and horseshoes. The temperate climate invites us to maximize our time in the fresh air, even when we’re not exercising. Alfresco dining takes the social centerpiece of an indoor-cooked meal and places it outdoors. If your trip abroad didn’t come to fruition this summer, you can recreate your own cultural experience with a few friends and a little resourcefulness. May we suggest hosting an Italianstyle meal on the patio? When we say Italian-style, we mean in the style of the Italian people, who savor good conversation as well as fabulous cuisine. Continued on page 11
Breaking Barriers This is an elegant case study for the seamless blending of indoor and outdoor living. It happens when your flower garden exists only a half-dozen steps away from your builtin stone fireplace, or when the lighting fixtures above your patio furniture are exquisite Mexican lamps from the mid-twentieth century. The style of this patio is as artsy and refined as what you’d see in an art gallery, upscale café, or design boutique. The pillars display geometric forms of Aztec design. They stand on a concrete floor that has been stained with rich earth tones and features concentric circles and southwest iconography. The floor was designed and finished by Concrete Colorscapes, 519.1822.
Pure Ranch Style This is the same deck featured on the cover and finished by Wood Savers, 831.9300. The exterior view reveals that the back wall is made of the same wood used to build the deck. The façade is reminiscent of a prairie cabin and establishes continuity between the deck and the home. Under the peak of the roof, the family’s cattle brand is emblazoned on a beam like a logo. The effectiveness of the wrought iron balusters and wall décor prove once again that metal and wood make a perfect couple. On the concrete patio, two rocking chairs flank a metal swing. The swing’s back support is made of silhouetted cutouts of horses. This level of dedication to ranch style lends character and a touch of whimsy to this prairie home.
A Patio for Every Pool Every pool needs a covered patio. We think it should be required. After all, it’s not just a place for family and friends to take a break from being out in the sun; it provides adults a comfortable place to look out for the safety of children while they play in the water. Also featured on the cover, this pavilion was designed and installed by New Image Roofing & Construction, 201.1180. The large roof ensures adequate coverage from the sunlight, and the ceiling fan can produce a pleasant breeze on a still day. The matching chairs, tables, and candles, from Ultra Modern Pool & Patio, form a particularly elegant ensemble of poolside furniture. The red cushions really pop against the dark, rich tone of the wicker. And their comfort makes lingering late into the evening even more relaxing!
Soundtrack of Summer This is the ultimate setup for large get-togethers. The backyard pictured here adeptly juggles multiple spaces for entertainment and relaxation. There’s a swimming pool, lounge area, Bocci court, garden, grassy recreational area, and a patio. All that’s needed now is some background music. Fortunately, each section has its own weatherproof speakers mounted in the timbers of the pergola or hidden among the plants. In the pool house, a common control panel can play music in different zones. The sound system supports iPod, AM/FM radio, and CDs. If you’re looking to add a soundtrack to your summer soirée without having to plug in a stereo, call LivingSound, 634.0333.

Wood Savers keeps Wichita area backyards ready for summer Backyard barbecues with family and friends are reminiscent of summertime entertainment.
W
ood Savers, Inc., a service oriented company owned and operated by Bob and Judy Tracy, understands that keeping your backyard looking as attractive as possible begins with your wood deck or fence. Bob and his crew have cleaned and preserved hundreds of decks, gazebos, fences, cedar siding and log cabin homes in Wichita and the surrounding areas. First they inspect the deck for repairs and board replacements. Next, old products and graying or sun damaged areas are removed by applying a stripper and/or deck wash, followed by a thorough power washing. A brightener or conditioner is often applied to older decks to bring them back to life. After 24 to 48 hours of drying time they apply an environmentally safe product that contains a sealer with a long-term water repellant, a high quality semi-transparent UV inhibitor, a mildicide, and fungicide. There are three main types of wood stains. The first is a semi-transparent stain and sealer. This is a preferred type, because you can still see the wood grain
while the color protects the deck from UV damage, preventing the graying process, and the sealer prevents water absorption. The second is a clear sealer, providing water protection but not UV protection— potentially graying much earlier. The third option is a solid or opaque stain. Solids often contain an acrylic formula and as a result are very durable, but keep in mind these stains are difficult to strip. “We try to accentuate the brick, rock, or siding through the stains and styles we have to offer,” says Judy. “Wood tones are the most popular, but we are able to accommodate most colors the customer desires. The rule of thumb for all stains is the higher the level of pigment, the longer the stain will last.” In their 24th year, Wood Savers expanded their services by not only repairing, cleaning and sealing the wood, but also by upgrading decks by adding rod iron rails. “We assist our customers in choosing the style, and we install them,” says Judy. “In addition we’ve joined forces with ‘The Deck Hand’, so we are now able to offer an even broader range of products.”
“We have the most economical solution, in Wichita, to keep your wood investments preserved,” says Bob. “We hear all the time that our prices are the most competitive and our work is top-notch.” For a free, no-obligation estimate call Wood Savers at 316-831-9300 or request an estimate at WoodSaversInc.com.
The homeowner of this beautiful gazebo was delighted with Wood Savers. “I was quite impressed with the attention to detail that Bob gave the project. After the crew was done, Bob came in, bringing his tools, to add his finishing touches. That showed the character of Wood Savers, how Bob wouldn’t let just ‘good enough’ pass, and that he was willing to take the extra steps to make sure the job was done to his (high) standards. I am also very happy with the color and the finish,” he says.
Stepping into Summer, from page 10 Plan multiple courses, starting with an antipasto at sunset, and let the evening mellow. For something less formal and more spontaneous, enjoy a French country picnic in your backyard. Spread a blanket under a shade tree and share a bottle of chilled table wine paired with your favorite cheeses and breads. Stormy weather can preclude outdoor activity, but as long as it’s not severe, we think you should resist the temptation to head indoors. Find a dry spot under the roof of a gazebo or porch and listen to the rain. Most of us find that the steady patter of rain has a relaxing effect on the psyche. After the storm departs, nature may treat you to a mesmerizing spectacle known as heat lightning. The interesting thing Continued on page 12
Sacred Space At the centerpiece of this arbor is the iconic Virgin of Guadalupe rendered in mosaic tiles. A candle chandelier and some sconces are festooned with ribbons and gently illuminate the sanctuary-like ambience. The four-top table is an ideal place for dining or intimate conversation. The periwinkle cushions on the chairs as well as the patterned pillows and cushion on the bench pick up the blues and greens of the table’s tiled surface. A&M Superior Upholstery (262.2076) supplies these and other fabrics designed for outdoor living. All around the grotto-like shrine, containers overflow with flowering plants. We can’t imagine a better way to spend a summer night than watching the candles burn down in a place like this.

Stepping into Summer, from page 11 about this phenomenon is the notable silence. When storms are distant, the noise they produce dissipates before reaching us. The result is a wondrous electrical display without the ominous punctuation of thunder. Every one of us can attest to the appeal of a summer’s day, that standard by which Shakespeare judged true beauty. Summer is an environment of tranquil and refreshing greenery, grass that tickles our bare feet, and choruses of crickets, birds, and raindrops. Upon this sensory-rich backdrop—at the same time stimulating and soothing—we make our collage of folding chairs, portable grills, potluck dishes, and games. It is during summer that moments have the greatest potential of creating deep imprints in the sand of memory.
A View of Summer The same deck from the cover, painted Cape Cod Red and sealed by CertaPro Painters of Wichita East (800.462.3782), stands in striking contrast against the backdrop of foliage. Decks function as more than just platforms to furnish with chairs, tables, and grills for summer entertainment and relaxation. They give homeowners an elevated vantage point from which to take in the outdoor environment. Enjoying summer is about experiencing all of the riches that it has to offer the human senses, from the warmth of the sunshine against our bare skin to the color green, which we find refreshing. As the most pervasive color in our world, greenery naturally appeals to us.
Nouveau Grilling Summertime is synonymous with cookouts, which became a national pastime in suburban America with the popularization of charcoal grills around the time of World War II. Cooking out has thrived ever since. Nowadays, the grills are bigger, fancier, and have become permanent fixtures on the patios of many homes. The cookouts of today take place in virtual exterior kitchens like this one. It includes a 32” Quivira Cimmaron grill head, a prep sink, ample storage, and a serving space, all custom designed by the people at All Things Barbecue, 440.3950. Plus, they offer great cooking classes to help you master your grill.
Indoor Comforts for Outdoor Living These homeowners originally contacted Guthridge Nighswonger about building a pool house that their grandchildren could use for shelter after swimming, but they ultimately decided on something more innovative. What they ended up with was a full-fledged entertainment area that brought indoor amenities to outdoor living in style. Framed by a striking tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling, the hearth room and dining area can be completely open to the outdoors for summer, or closed for winter use. The building’s brick façade is constructed of old street pavers salvaged from various places statewide. The dark shutters were rescued from an old restaurant. When closed, they add a little privacy to the hearth and dining rooms, but they are also great conversation accent pieces. The structure boasts distressed sliding barn-style doors. From the street, it looks all the world like a garage! These homeowners delightedly welcome family and friends into their new outdoor living area by Guthridge Nighswonger, 264.7900.

A Peaceable Kingdom Birds, Bees, and Me, from page 7
“It all boils down to the question of whether we dare to consider the bees’ own needs or only our own. The difference is vast. A healing won’t be accomplished without sacrifices on our part.” —Gunther Hauk, author of Toward Saving the Honeybee
Consider the Honey Bee whose numbers have been in decline for the past 20 years. Much research has been done to try to discover the problem. The answer may be right in front of us. Can you imagine a life without Honey Bees and butterflies? Who would pollinate the flowers and the worldwide food source? We all benefit from their existence. Hopefully, it makes us think twice before spraying pesticides in our flower beds and veggie gardens. Sometimes the best control for “bad bugs” is as simple as a spray of soapy water or there’s always the impact of two bricks smashing together. Very scientific! Be conscious of the time of year you pick to have that giant unsightly dead tree cut down and hauled off or chipped up. Spring and early summer may be good for the tree trimming companies, but not so great for the helpless family of baby Chickadees, Tufted Titmice or Nuthatches held up in a cozy old woodpecker hole. Perhaps waiting until fall would save the birds, and tree trimmers may even give you a better deal. Habitat is a big word, but it starts with just a little of the right kind of space. It’s a very personal word for me as a gardener, homeowner, bird lover and the place where my grandchildren play. I can’t imagine doing harm to it. It brings so much joy to my life! A Whole House Remodel Delivers a New, Polished Look
T
he difference between a good remodel and a great remodel is that everything looks like it has always been there. And that’s the way Guthridge Nighswonger approached this whole-house remodeling project. From moving a wall to open the kitchen to updating the hearth room and living room, the Guthridge Nighswonger team pulled out all the stops to give this home a unified look—and to deliver everything on the homeowners’ must-have list. Above: A tiny kitchen island was replaced with a family-friendly space. The new island is made with prefinished maple interiors and features a pullout towel and soap holder, under-sink pullout, and built-in double trash cans. The oversized seating overhang sports large wood columns. The sides of the island are equipped with drawers and space for a lift-up blender. The bar front features more storage with dovetailed pullouts and magnetic touch latches that create a faux front. The exterior is Red Grandis wood with a Spanish Oak finish. The home’s dated honey oak cabinets were replaced with new ones finished in a white paint with a slight amount of chocolate-hued glaze. They are built with prefinished maple interiors, adjustable shelves, and maple hardwood dovetailed pullouts. To the left of the refrigerator is a large pullout pantry plus a larger, swing-out pantry. On the backside of the pantry is an iPad and cell phone docking station. The kitchen’s new layout adds a lot of much-needed storage space. The upper cabinets are fitted with a corner lazy Susan and adjustable shelves. Frosted glass panels accent the stainless-steel and wood hood vent, and marble and granite countertops and glass tiles complete the look. Above, left: The hearth room received a new fireplace insert with Uba Tuba granite surround, as well as a custom mantle painted to echo the deep grey-green kitchen tile.
