The Art of Cultivating Simple Pleasures and Living Well
LIVING COLOR
C
Color is an important attribute of many objects—flowers, food, a favorite dress. But none of these things are intrinsically colorful the way we think they are. Objects either absorb color or reflect it, but they do not possess it. Sunlight contains all colors of the spectrum. When it shines on a rosebush in your garden, the blooms absorb every color except one: red. That’s the color you see—a reflection. Just like everything else, people reflect and absorb colors too. Our relationship with color has been the subject of philosophy and research for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. In color therapy, different hues of light are said to heal the mind, body, and spirit. Practitioners of feng shui utilize color in their environments to attract good health, Continued on page 10.
Combining complementary colors, or displaying fresh cut flowers, can create an appealing invitation and soothing atmosphere. Clockwise from top left. 1] The main focus of this dining room is the oversized painting, which stands out bold and bright against the light-brown wall. Its blues and greens resonate with the homeowner’s glass collection on the right. Meanwhile, the gold goes well with the chandelier, candlestick holders, and brass lamp with the linen shade. The unique teak table features a sandblasted driftwood-gray finish that adds a new dimension of natural tones. This charming collection of decorative bottles covered with chicken wire harkens back to simpler times. Grouped together or displayed individually, these unique vases add intrigue to any décor. Babes in the Woods Lone animal infants are a common sight but rare cause for intervention.
A
brand-new generation of brood has arrived on the springtime stage. As the warming climate draws us outdoors, it’s not uncommon to encounter one of nature’s newborns separated from its mother. The impulse to intervene can be strong. But wildlife experts offer a word of caution: Don’t get carried away. Most cases that look like abandonment are not what they seem. Some animal species have very little contact with their young. Cottontail rabbits, for instance, leave their babies alone for most of the day, only returning at dusk to nurse— and for good reason. Frequent visits to the nest may reveal its location to predators. If you happen to uncover baby rabbits, leave them in their burrow and stay clear. The mother is probably out foraging for food and will return. Cathy Clausen, owner of Backyard Nature Center, advises the same approach toward birds.

Birds are instinctively adept at raising their young. If you do happen to come across baby birds in your yard, remember they are best left to the expert care of their parents. American Robins, like many birds, work together to keep their growing, fledglings fed.

Watering right helps conserve resources and preserve botanical beauty.
N
ever mind winter with all its holiday cheer. Spring is the most wonderful time of the year for gardeners. Working alongside Mother Nature, they help her bring color back into the dreary landscape. Essential to this honorable task is water. Good watering habits may not be everything when it comes to gardening (soil quality is the most important), but doing it right will result in heartier plants and less water waste. Sometimes plants just look like they could use a drink, especially under the blazing afternoon sun. To this, garden pros turn their green thumbs down. Midday is the least productive time to give your plants a brisk shower. The warmer it is outside, the more likely water will dry up before ever reaching the root system 6 or more inches below the ground. Master gardeners recommend prolonged, infrequent watering sessions in the morning or at night. This will saturate the ground and give roots a healthy mixture of water and soil nutrients to soak up. Because plants drink through their roots, it makes sense to direct the flow of water to that area. Drip irrigation tubes offer an efficient delivery system, saving up to 50 percent of water compared to sprinklers and sprays. They are installed beneath the mulch and release water directly into the ground through tiny holes. There’s no waste through evaporation or runoff. Watering wands are handy tools for extending your reach so you can get closer to the plant base. Just be sure to use the sprayer wisely. Overhead showers are beneficial for rinsing off dust after dry, windy periods, but there is no need to water plants this way. In fact, dousing flowers can be detrimental to their health for a couple of reasons. Damp foliage is conducive to fungal growth, which leaves behind ugly, dark spots. Fungus also produces airborne spores that cause seasonal allergies. Sprays can also wash away pollen. When that happens, the bloom becomes useless and falls off earlier than it should. Ordinarily, pollen is transferred from the flower’s Continued on page 7. Spring 2017

Kitchen & Bath Gallery’s seamless remodel creates an ultimate kitchen designed for serious cooking and lively entertaining

his homeowner wanted a practical, yet stylish kitchen that would make everything from cooking to entertaining a breeze. In order to create a room worthy of this serious cook, Mark Combs, co-owner of Kitchen & Bath Gallery, started with ample counter space, in this case all finished with a substantial 6-cm full bullnose Pietra Imperial granite, fabricated and provided by Quality Granite. To cover the vent system of the range, a custom raised granite shelf was created. This clever shelf serves the additional benefit of providing a convenient ledge for the homeowner’s favorite cooking condiments, as well as making a short partition between the range and dining guests. The next thing Mark did was to make the most of the kitchen island. Built around the chef-style Wolf range, the island provides considerable storage, a sink on one end, a built-in microwave, and space for up to five hungry guests with front row seats to all the action taking place in the kitchen. Pairing refined cabinetry with utilitarian appliances creates a visually appealing, and truly functional kitchen. Crystal’s cherry wood cabinetry in the Amber Select color, featuring a hand-buffed finish with burnishing along the edges of the doors and drawer fronts, was selected for its classic appeal. The backsplash is 2”x 4” bevel tile in a Tuscan Ivory finish. The double refrigerator and island feature fluted torus columns, and the cabinets all boast new pewter hardware. The steam oven—one of this healthy cook’s favorite appliances—and the convection oven are installed to the right of the new refrigerator. A full bar was created at the end wall next to the dining area, using the same beautiful cabinetry as in the kitchen, but with lighting and seedy glass doors to display the glassware. The bar backsplash is finished with 11/4” x 4” copper metal mosaic. A mini wine cooler, and a large television above to catch the latest sporting events, complete the space. A large walk-in pantry was created off the kitchen, making good use of the homeowner’s previous refrigerator, and providing space for a coffee bar, a hanging pot rack for his collection of copper pans, and another sink for easy cleanup. The homeowner is delighted with the results and finds the new space perfect to meet his cooking and entertaining needs.

his fairly new home was originally painted a nondescript yellowish beige with no distinguishing trim, and a plain brown wood door. The homeowners knew they wanted something different, something that would make them smile when they came home each day. As with most things, they looked around to get a few bids, but when they met Jamie and Jorge Ibarra, the local owners of CertaPro Painters, they instinctively knew they were the right company for the job. “Their enthusiasm for their work, and positive attitude was a major deciding factor,” one of the homeowners said. “In fact, their endearing personalities and obvious passion let us know from the start that the job was going to be taken care of, and taken care of right. We started by taking advantage of their great complimentary color consultant program. We don’t know of any other painting company that offers that kind of service, and that was just the beginning of the special care we found Before Colors CertaPro provides.” The color consultant suggested colors that would work well with the brick, the stone, their existing windows, the roof tile, and highlight the architectural trim features.
Spring 2017
The home’s new main color is SW7046 Anonymous, trimmed with SW7506 Loggia, and accented with a door in SW7599 Brick Paver.
Plus, she suggested instead of having the wood door repainted its existing brown, that they have it painted a new, red brick color. They couldn’t be happier with the fresh, bright results. There are a lot of companies that paint, but using professionals that really care about their work, and their customers, makes all the difference in the world. “They went out of their way to be helpful every step of the way, and the way they cleaned up each day—you couldn’t even tell a painting crew had been here. They always showed up on time, and they encouraged us to point out any areas of concern we might have had. Throughout the entire process they were very professional, and a real pleasure to work with.” Now, when these homeowners come home, they can’t help but smile. “They made our house beautiful!” Nothing could make Jamie and Jorge Ibarra prouder. “We understand people have a choice when it comes to allowing a contractor into their home, and we feel privileged to have the opportunity to deliver the best possible job to them,” says Jamie, “Making people happy with their homes is a great feeling.” From appearance to durability, they make certain that every painting project is finished to the customer’s satisfaction. A Peaceable Kingdom, from page 2 According to Clausen, removing baby birds from their natural habitat, even with the kindest intentions, deprives them of survival skills. “We cannot teach them how to fly, watch out for predators, or feed themselves. Once you release a baby after a couple weeks, it will sit there dumbfounded and get nabbed by a cat or a hawk.” When an otherwise healthy nestling is discovered alone and exposed to danger, it may be returned to the nest. Contrary to the popular myth, physical contact will not cause the mother to reject its baby. But handling infant wildlife poses risks. You could hurt or traumatize the animal. You might also spread bacteria and disease to pets or other people. “The best thing to do is either let mom find them or let nature take its course,“ Clausen says. “That’s a hard concept for well-meaning folks.” Birds have always faced tough odds. Less than half of newborns survive their first few weeks of life, but this is how the environment sustains healthy bird populations. For baby animals that are found wounded, further intervention is possible. Although it is illegal to shelter and care for wild animals, wildlife rehabilitators are authorized and trained to do so. These licensed professionals rescue sick and injured animals and give them a second chance at survival. For a list of local wildlife rehabilitators, visit the Kansas Wildlife, Parks & Tourism website at KSOutdoors.com. Help mother birds stay nourished by keeping your feeder well-stocked. M
uch of a property’s first impression, often referred to as “curb appeal” comes from how unique a home can be presented through imaginative landscaping. Although superb landscaping plays a role, incorporating artistic and inspired pieces that garner first-impression attention by themselves brings a distinctive presence to any space, from formal entries to casual poolside gardens, that is sure to engage and delight all. Handcrafted from galvanized or powder-coated steel, the pieces of landscaping art designed and crafted by the artists at Desert Steel take the idea of curb appeal to another dimension. This Wichita-based company uses a unique combination of artistic vision and the splendor of nature to create one-of-a-kind works of art that add customization and luxury to your yard. The sculptures are unsurpassed in their ability to attract welcomed attention by themselves while blending into your home’s overall landscaping. Each piece takes the complex beauty of nature and adds the longevity of man-made, rust-resistant, anti-fading steel. “We want to realistically represent some of nature’s most beloved icons with unparalleled creative detail and lasting durability to enjoy no matter where you live,” says Eric Carroll, co-owner and one of Desert Steel’s artists. Many of the sculptures recreate the awe-inspiring plant life found in the American Southwest. Along with the show-stopping, light-spangled saguaros, which range in height from two- to twenty-seven feet, Desert Steel produces agaves, trees, flowers, and an assortment of bird feeders that are sure to spice up your landscape. And whatever pieces you choose, the exceptional attention to detail supplements the overall functionality of the no-maintenance, realistic structures that will remain verdant despite the weather. The timeless designs of nature fused with hand-made craftsmanship sets Desert Steel’s bold sculptures apart from anything else that could grace your home’s landscaping. The artists’ abilities to fashion practical elements, intertwined with artistry and allure, provide unlimited opportunities to enhance any style of landscaping and add a unique design statement to your home’s outdoor aesthetic. Mad for Mustard Pots
ollectors are fond of saying that if something exists, someone somewhere will want to collect it, and those who collect mustard pots prove the point. Collectively, little is known about mustard pots‚ at least in terms of their origins and evolutions in various countries, and even less has been written about them. But a mere lack of information is inconsequential to those who have fallen in love with the objects themselves. Collections often begin with one interest only to attach another. After his beloved Red Sox lost the 1986 World Series to the Mets, Barry Levenson, unable to sleep, went to an all night supermarket and roamed the aisles until, dazedly gazing through the mustard aisle, he heard a voice: “If you collect us, they will come.” To this day, he swears that this is how and why One of the rarest mus- he began collecting mustards and tard pots in Levenson’s then mustard pots. Levenson’s spectacular collection includes antique and contemporary mustard pots from around the world, and to mustard pot collectors, the museum is sacred ground, a place they must visit at least once in their lifetime. Among the rarest on exhibition are a High Life Mustard jar from Milwaukee; a mustard pot from the now-defunct Prussian province of
Silesia; one commemorating the 1939 visit of the British royal family to Canada; and a squeeze tube of Colman’s Pic-Nic Mustard, which is more than likely one of the earliest such containers manufactured. As far as anyone knows, the only other official collections of mustard pots are the largely French faience ones at the Maille Mustard Museum in Dijon, France, and the silver mustard pots comprising the Colman collection in Norwich, England. Both the Maille and Colman companies are renowned worldwide for making superlative mustards since the eighteenth century. LIVING COLOR, from cover luck, or happiness. Some claim that each of us radiates an invisible aura, and the color of the aura says something about our personality. Scientific studies suggest that we’re hardwired to perceive colors in certain ways, and that they have measurable cognitive effects such as relieving stress and boosting productivity. Whichever the case may be, you can take full advantage of color’s potential by using the home and garden as your canvas. First thing’s first. It’s easy to get lost in the rainbow, so you should start with a strategy. Interior designers can help you paint your world like a pro. But if you decide to go solo, the color wheel is a simple and effective tool for bringing order and logic to your color choices. Imagine chartreuse furniture, green-apple accents, and walls like iced lemonade. These hues live side by side on the color wheel. They’re known as analogous colors, and they represent one useful type of color scheme. When stepping into a room is like the fresh scent of citrus or a cool breeze on a hot day, the power of analogous colors is at work. Monochromatic schemes are ideal for expressing a favorite color. If you’re especially fond of blue, different shades and tints can expand your palette, giving you bold, neutral, and light hues to work with. You can also utilize shape and volume to express the same color in different ways. A bright red lampshade adds a pinch of spice to a neutral room, but a whole accent wall says, “Wow!” In the garden, broad-faced sunflowers and slender goldenrods showcase yellow in two distinct forms. Tulips can have a powerful visual impact when planted in large drifts. Complementary colors sit on opposite sides of the color wheel. When put together, they create a perfect visual balance. You’ve seen them in nature: red rose petals on top of green stems, a blue and orange sky at dusk, or yellow bees pollinating lavender. These pairings can be repeated in the home along with other inspiring combinations. The natural world provides the ultimate color fan deck with an endless variety of foliage, barks, flowers, and fruits. Continued on page 11.
Color Comfort With upholstered walls, this sunroom is designed for year-round enjoyment. The walls are finished in a greige-checked linen, the chaise lounge boasts a floral linen, and the wooden bench swing is cushioned with natural linen and topped with soft pink pillows. The muted green and pink coordinate with certain tones in the brick flooring and create a soothing atmosphere for reading and relaxing. To experience the perfect marriage of texture and color, stop by A&M Superior Upholstery and inquire about its fine fabrics and full-service upholstery. Outdoor Style That Pops Against a backdrop of placid greenery, the bright-red cushions are arresting. Liquid-Blue Architecture This rectilinear pool incorporates an elevated spa, which sits inside the pool itself. Water flows freely from a row of spouts along the top of the spa. It’s a dynamic touch compared to the formal lines and perfect angles of the pool’s geometry. The spa’s deep-blue tile facade offers a striking contrast against the turquoise water and lighter stone work. The homeowner has placed planter urns and statuary in the cut-out corners, which feature pedestals specially made for such outdoor décor. This refreshing landscape is pure contemporary classic. Color preferences vary from person to person, but there are some universal truths and rules of thumb to keep in mind. Cool colors soothe, and warm colors exude energy. Green is widely considered the most restful to the human eye. Red, whether it sizzles or sweetens, almost always steals the show. In fact, warm hues catch people’s attention more than cool ones. If you want guests to notice that new piece of furniture, accessorize it with warm accents. Warm colors focus attention so well that they can make a room appear Continued on page 12.

Timber homestyle takes a whole new direction with this industrial chic look by Kitchen Tune-Up Kitchen Tune-Up does more than remodels; they also build amazing kitchens from scratch.
A
dam and Rachel Phillips’ flourishing, locally-owned franchise, Kitchen Tune-Up, specializes in cabinet refacing, new kitchen cabinets, redooring, and the overall renewal of kitchens, but the company also delights in building all-new kitchens from the ground up. Recently, the owners of this new build asked them to bring their dreams to life in the style of timber homes. With a backdrop of rough hewn beams, Kitchen Tune-Up turned to traditional knotty alder, enhanced with a new truffle color stain, for the cabinetry. The granite selected for the countertops is honed instead of polished, which gives it a soapstone feel without the high maintenance. The painted and glazed island, contrasts the dark cabinets, thereby adding a softening effect. The solid granite farmhouse style sink and copper hood are stunning accents. And, storage abounds in the many cabinets, including a long built-in buffet with drawers and wine storage in the adjacent dining room. Kitchen Tune-Up continued the timber homestyle theme into the master bath, installing wood looking porcelain tile flooring, and a natural stone enclosed shower with a river rock floor. The homeowners couldn’t be happier! This amazing project showcases the vision and quality that Adam and Rachel put into their work. The pair takes great pride in every project they commit to and the
award-winning results of their labors will make any kitchen they focus on the most popular place in any home. LIVING COLOR, from page 11 smaller than it really is. By contrast, cool colors seem farther away and give the illusion of larger spaces. Bright tints lighten up shaded areas, and dark shades brighten up light areas. So you might avoid going too dark in a room with no windows. Bold colors do better in direct light. They fade as the sun sets, while lighter colors will stand out. Gardens with silver and white flowers become enchanting places in the moonlight. Colors are alive. They change with lighting. They react differently with other colors. For these reasons, always test them out in your own home. With infinite combinations available, you can create a scheme that is entirely your own. A simple color wheel will help you choose confidently. Most importantly, choose the colors that really speak to you—and the ones that speak of you. —By Matt Nelson.
Artistic Moods Art is one of the most rewarding ways to introduce color into any space. Fortunately, Wichita is home to a great many fine artists whose works often appear at Tessera Fine Art Gallery. Owner Teressa Sliger, an accomplished artist in her own right, has experience in a variety of media. This delightful piece, titled Sunshine, is one of her oil paintings. And it’s aptly named for its use of vivid yellows, which exude the brightness and warmth of a sunny day. Displaying art in the home or office not only adds a vibrant aesthetic. It can also produce good vibes through color. To purchase works by local artists, visit Tessera Fine Art Gallery, 412 E. Douglas, 262.2435, or online at TesseraFineArtGallery.com.
Splashes of Whimsy These darling pillows come in so many colors and patterns that it’s hard to pick just one. And that’s quite all right because these winsome characters get along so well! Together they’ll add a splash of color to your room. Next to the animal pillows, reversible blankets have been crafted from several layers of vintage saris and hand-stitched with contrasting color threads. Known as kanthas, these delicate throw blankets possess captivating compositions and can be used for home adornment, a layer of warmth on cool evenings, or a stylish shawl while you’re out and about. Discover these one-of-a-kind pillows and kanthas at Uniquities Home, 141 N. Rock Island, 831.1818, or by appointment, 214.2301.
Surprising Hues For interior designer Sharon Nelson, coowner of Nelson Designs LLC, the secret to this room’s success was bringing together three dominant colors. Navy, fuchsia, and yellow have bold personalities, and you can bet they liven things up wherever they meet. The homeowner loved it.
Three Are Better Than One When designing window coverings for extremely tall windows, the use of different colors can help break up the vertical expanse. The drapes in this room utilize cream and two analogous colors— sage green and teal blue. These natural tints are soothing to the senses and help bring a little of the outdoors indoors.
Luxury and comfort also become acquainted at this party. The arm supports on the ottomans and the soft, tufted velvet sofa are simultaneously elegant and inviting. To achieve surprising styles with colors, visit Nelson Designs LLC, located in The Shops at Tallgrass, 8340 E. 21st St., 613.3450, or view the website at NelsonDesignsLLC.net.

mediately, the oil is ready. Add 8 to 10 triangles at a time to the oil, being careful not to overfill the pan. Cook on one side about 15 to 25 seconds; turn each over to cook for approximately 5 seconds more. Using tongs, remove the triangles as they begin to turn golden and place them on paper towels to drain. Continue cooking the remaining triangles and draining them as before. Once they’ve slightly cooled, place one batch at a time in the paper sack containing the cinnamon-sugar mixture and lightly shake it to coat each triangle. Set aside. Rinse and drain the blueberries and set them aside. Shake can of non-dairy whipped cream. Crunchy Carrot and Bean Sprout Salad Salad 1/2 cup raw peanuts 3-4 large carrots, coarsely grated 2 rounded cups bean sprouts 1/2 cup raisins 1/4 cup chopped cilantro or parsley Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the raw peanuts in a shallow pan, roast them for 8 to 10 minutes, and salt to taste. Toss all the ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl. The salad may be refrigerated, covered, until you are ready to serve it.
Croutons 3-4 slices sesame semolina bread 1-2 teaspoons olive oil Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes. Drizzle the olive oil over the cubed bread and bake them for 10 to 15 minutes, or until they’re lightly crisped. Set aside.
Tofu 6-8 ounces firm tofu 1/2 cup canola oil salt to taste Cut the tofu into 1/2–inch slices and place them between paper towels and a tea towel to dry. Cut the slices into 1/2-inch cubes. Bring the oil to a medium-high heat in a small heavy pan and add half the tofu cubes. To prevent the pieces from sticking together, stir the tofu cubes with a metal spatula as they brown, approximately 3 to 4 minutes. When the cubes have turned golden brown, remove them to a paper towellined plate to drain and sprinkle with a little salt. Add the other half of the tofu cubes to the pan and brown, remove, drain, and salt them as before. Set aside.
Dressing 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 teaspoons dark asian sesame oil 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar Put all the dressing ingredients into a small bowl and whisk together. When you’re ready to serve the salad, pour half of the dressing over and toss well to coat all. Add the croutons, tofu, and remaining dressing and toss all again.
Sweet and Spicy Strawberries Sweet Strawberries 1/2 quart organic strawberries 1 tablespoon fine sugar 2 tablespoons good-quality balsamic vinegar Hull the strawberries, cut them into quarters lengthwise, and place in a medium serving bowl. Mix the sugar and vinegar together in a small non-reactive bowl. Pour the balsamic vinegar-sugar mixture over the strawberries and let them stand for approximately 15 minutes. Gently stir, taste, and add more sugar or vinegar according to your taste. You should prepare this dish just before the meal is served, since the strawberries don’t stay firm for very long.
A simple deck was removed and replaced with a screened porch, complete with overhead shelter and wiring for a ceiling fan, lights, and a small heater. Now the homeowners can enjoy their deck throughout most of the year.

To prepare the dressing, whisk the extra-virgin olive oil into the vinegar and add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. In a large pan of boiling salted water, cook the sugar snap peas for 15 seconds; add the snow peas and cook for an additional 15 seconds. Drain the peas and put them into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. When they’ve cooled, drain them thoroughly and transfer them to a large serving bowl. Add the pea shoots, the pea sprouts, and the chopped mint. Pour the dressing over, toss gently, and serve. *You can grow pea sprouts, which are readily available, into pea shoots, but using pea sprouts alone also works. Organic peas for sprouting, and sprouting kits, are available at natural food stores.
