JOURNAL IDEAS

OVERLAY

I've decided to include my research ideas for the layout of this journal as hopefully it will show where I have gathered creative ideas from and be beneficial in my learning process. I went onto Pinterest to see what IMAGES I wanted to inspire me with this part of my project.

The Kate Spade 'Places to go People to see' is a favourite book of mine, the imagery and travel style photography is especially inspiring , not to mention the use of colourful GRAPHICS and typography. On the right are three images from Oh Comely Magazine, another old love of mine, here you can see scanned in letters and images to create a creative page setting.

MAGAZINE RESEARCH

I wanted to look deeper into what a magazine means to me to then have a thought to start my research. Looking through MAGAZINES I buy or have bought and even flicking through books by Alexa Chung or Kate Spade for example I realised I have a love for publications that have a LONGER LIFE SPAN.

SALFORD ZINE LIBRARY

These few images were taken from the Salford Zine Library to help inspire the aesthetic of our magazine and look at how other people have created their own zines.

This Modern Love has images of handwritten letters and personal stories inside, the layout used could be of use for if we have an interview or letter in our magazine.

PUBLICATIONS TO ME PERSONAL Looking through old publications I have at home, I found Frankie Magazine, the Alexa Chung IT book and Modern Love by Will Darbyshire. These two books may not be magazines but the content is certainly creative and useful for ideas going further. The mix of film photography and film strips in IT will be a perfect influence for the different medias we want to use in our publication.

MY INTERESTS &INSPIRATIONS Scandinavian and minimalistic fashion and lifestyle have always been incorporated in images I've liked on Instagram or pinned on Pinterest. I enjoy bloggers outfits from Scandinavia and feel this influences my style on a daily basis.

LAUDIVIDNI

Also, I have a major love for interiors and homes, I have always loved watching home renovation shows or reading INTERIOR magazines. I would love to work in interior styling one day and I feel my love of homeware will be able to come through in this project with links to lifestyle in the magazine.

I started thinking about my interests and aspects of culture or style that influence my taste. Here are a few images that represent my passions in the creative industry. Graphic design and fonts have always been a love of mine and I feel they will be influential in this project. I also enjoy baking and cooking, therefore if this can be incorporated too via great photography this would be a great addition.

To start the ideas flowing in our group we decided to start a collaborative Pinterest Board to share our ideas for the layout and AESTHETIC of our magazine. Here we have a few images from the board which show the ideas of film photography as well as graphic design mixed to contrast a minimal layout.

PINTEREST BOARD COLLAB

FIRST PITCH This was our first pitch, taken from our initial ideas. We wanted to cover all the areas we thought were important and get feedback to develop our idea further. We also made an instagram to document the different areas and our ideas for each.

FEEDBACK AND STEP BACK After our pitch we felt uninspired and unmotivated, we thought our idea was solid and had a good base of research, however after discussing with our tutors I felt like this isn;t the avenue they want us to go down. So after deliberation we decided to scrap the idea and start again. We also decided instead of creating roles for one another we wanted everyone to help out so everyone got a go at each role in the editorial team so in the future we know which roles we fit best into.

G A T H E R I N G I D E A S

After an unsuccessful pitch about where we wanted our magazine to go we had to take a step back and think more about the CONTENT in the magazine we would be creating rather than the aesthetic. We each wrote down a list of content ideas that we personally would enjoying seeing in a publication and shared this as a group. Hopefully then we can see CORRELATION between each others ideas and find a happy medium where a theme and purpose for our magazine comes to mind. In our facebook chat I wanted to get ideas flowing and our group working to come up with a concept so I suggested each person to come up with a concept for the magazine so we could alter or pick between the 6 we would come up with.

12 3 A publication on reference images for a certain subject, would include collaborative images and other peoples work and appeal to creatives in a similar education sector to ourselves to use when researching different topics related to fashion. This would mean they can pick up one book and find images, quotes, references and inspiration all in one place.

A coffee table book on healthier life mindset, looking further into mindfulness and how to believe and be confident in yourself, the way you dress and act to support a healthier more successful life. Included recipes for superfood and brain food, mindfulness activities, soothing and inspirational imagery and articles on how to dress for you and be individual without the pressure and stress.

A publication that shares new music on the radar or old music to re-listen to, with album reviews, photography inspired by a certain song, to create feeling and mood whilst listening to song and looking at the images and well as interviews and short stories, poems that link to photography. It could include a range of different genres of music so theres something in there for everyone. But the main selling point would be the experience between the music, the editorial and the written content on the same page. This could be changed or be about fashion or another outlet such as linking someones certain style or a certain collection to a genre or album in music which then is transformed into a photograph series.

MY THIRD PITCH WAS A WINNER WITH MY GROUP SO WE HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE THIS IDEA FORWARD!

MUSIC

After thinking about different ideas for content in our magazine we needed to start thinking more about the music which is the backbone of the whole story. We each put together a playlist of a few songs we thought would work well in the magazine and would link to night or day, so here's my playlist. These few songs are moody and interesting and I feel they would work well to link to some interesting campaign imagery, especially the song 'Mirror' by The Drums as I thought a shoot containing a mirror as a prop, an item used everyday would be a perfect match. Here is my editorial inspiration below:

INTERVIEW

LILY FINLAY

Lily Finlay is a friend I went to school with and a very talented musician, she has performed at The Big Feastival and is currently working on her first ep as well as her first song Jeans being available on itunes, Google Play and Spotify. I interviewed lily for our magazine to talk about where her love for music comes from and what we can expect from her in the future, Here's the script that I gathered. Today we spoke to 19 year old Lily Finlay, a musician from Yorkshire. here’s what she had to say... Hi Lily how’re you? Lily: I’m good thank you! I’ve been busy with my music and recording lately so that’s really exciting. Obviously I’m here to speak to you about your music, so what made you get started in the beginning? Lily: I’d been singing and doing theatre since I was small but I picked up a guitar in a music class in high school and fell in love with it straight away. As soon as I started learning I didn’t want to stop. The Bic competition was an incredible opportunity for you, talk me through what happened? Lily: Well I applied for the competition after seeing Bethan Leadley post about it and I didn’t expect for my song to even be listened to, never mind being shortlisted for the final. After a voting period, I won and I was able to record professionally and perform at The Big Feastival in Oxford which was an incredible experience for me. You performed your song jeans that’s now available on iTunes on Spotify, so tell me, what’s the meaning behind it?

INTERVIEW

Lily: Jeans is one of the first songs I wrote when I was 13 and it’s about feeling as if someone is bored of you or has outgrown you, which I’m sure everyone can relate to at some point. It’s available on Spotify, iTunes and Google Play; all the main streaming services really. Is your first song on Spotify your favourite one you’ve written or do you have a soft spot for another? Lily: Jeans is obviously very special to me with it being one of the first songs I’ve wrote, however I’ve grown and changed since I was 13 and my music has evolved with me, so I’m just very excited to release newer material and for people to hear the new stuff. I can’t wait to hear your new music, how do you feel about making new music, what drives you? Lily: Songwriting is like a diary for me, it’s always been the case that it’s so honest and personal. Everything I write is true to me and my experiences. I would always want that to be a driving force people can hear in my lyrics but for people to be able to listen and relate to the music is something really special also. Where do you hope this will take you? Lily: I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing but to be able to just continue performing and releasing is the dream. I love doing it and I hope other people continue to enjoy my music as well. That’s great! Thank you so much for talking to us today, we hope to hear new songs soon! Lily: Thank you for speaking to me! I have a new EP coming summer so look out for that!

ZINE WORKSHOP

Today we had a zine workshop where we looked at making a magazine layout plan with layout ideas for different types of pages. As this was our first layout ideas session as a group, as in making the layouts we had a go at different ways to create a page to then inspire us when making it digitally. Using magazine pages, markers, ink and masking tape we were able to create a few pages each. These were my ideas and attempts.

We had a group feedback session today regarding our magazine so far therefore I created A3 boards to demonstrate our ideas so far. This included our concept, customer, collaborators and shoot ideas as well as layout experimentation from research.

GROUP CRIT

The idea for these shoots are to be mundane everyday tasks like shopping, eating and looking in the mirror but taken to the next level through editorial. We want to take the mirrors shoot outside, in a park for a days shoot and in a car park or industrial area for the night shoot, supermarket shoot would be night also, whereas the food would be both looking at takeaway foods after a night out and healthy foods during the day.

The tutors didn't like the internet brush strokes and font as they look fake, they would rather we hand draw our font to make it more original. They also liked how we were experimenting with colour for background instead of focusing on black and white.

Researching into colour could be another avenue to look down next to see which will fit for night or day and I think the workshops next week with graphics and in the studio will help to consolidate some ideas.

HOW WILL WE CURATE THIS OUTCOME

ANNABELLE FOZARD Scans of Annabelle's art and further looking at how this could work as a front cover ideas. I think the abstract style of the paintings shows creativity but just how unique our magazine will be.

F E I R B E H T RE-LOOKING

So we're still working in a group of 4-6 depending on whether one of our team members drops out of the course. May is the start of festival season therefore our idea for a music based magazine as new music and finding new artists happens often at festivals this magazine would be perfect to find new music also. The collaboration aspect is certainly evident in our magazine with countless additions from outside creatives. As we need articles in our magazine that haven't yet been spoke about this is where I will take my independent research next, We also need to think about how we will promote the magazine, but I feel this will be best to discuss once the magazine is near finalisation so we can be sure it is the right promotional path.

ARTICLE IDEAS Product page on Native Youth Article on pricing; could talk about music and how technology is changed CD and Record sales Why do consumers purchase online rather than in-store, could then link to music on why people purchase music online and on phones rather than a physical copy

MOVING FORWARD I think the next two weeks before easter are an important time to get all of our editorials completed and start to ask collaborators where they are at with their work. I also feel it is necessary to start work on the layout and magazine document to be able to insert work as and when we receive it. I will research further on our editorial ideas to find photographers who shoot in a specific style that could be inspiring towards our shoots as well as start to sketch out lay plans of pages to get my ideas down on paper.

P HEOMTIOL YG RRAYPAHLELRS

Emily is a photographer I know from high school so when we asked for collaborators she reached out to me with these images from her latest exhibition 'Youth Content'. The images are stunning and i feel will fit perfectly in the style of the magazine. Now we need to gather ideas of which song will fit best with these images. I feel a song about youth or with connotations of personality or age will pair best, such like 17 by Jaws.

ISAAC MARLEY MORGAN

I love the style Isaac Marley Morgan creates with his photography with a ethereal sense as well as taking the aspect of zoom to create stylised imagery that fits perfectly with the one it sits next to. The collection above is particularly inspiring for more than just the photography. I feel this could be really interesting to influence our mirrors shoot but I also feel the layout would be strong as an idea for our magazine as the contrast of these stunning images with handwritten text really works in creating a spread that feels personal and well thought out.

These images are taken from different photographers who I like the style of and I think could be of influence when we curate our own editorial shoots.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Whilst researching photographers I also found Byron Spencer whose imagery I was also drawn to. The candid style and less posed shots are my favourite but I think as a group we could take influence from the composition and the way the images are repeated and or put together with black and white and colour images. With the image on the right I felt this could also influence a shoot due to the portraiture photography made unique with natural elements causing movement in the image. All of these are very inspirational and I think these could be useful to look at whilst shooting ourselves.

LAYOUT

As it is just before the easter holidays we needed to sit down and really think about how we want everything to fit together once we have got all the work from the collaborators. Using our Pinterest board we have taken a few images to inspire and layouts to stick to in order to make our magazine consistent. Example text

TOOHS DOOF

The idea behind our food shoot was taking something ordinary but making it a little different looking at food eaten after a night out. This series of images needs editing to fit the style of the magazine but will fit in the night side of the magazine.

DEVELOPMENT

We have come back after the easter holidays and started creating the magazine. First we needed to see which collaborators had been in touch and contact them for their work as well as working out an order for the magazine and the playlist.

WILLY FLECKHAUS After a tutorial at University we were told to look into Fleckhaus for inspiration for our magazine as we were focusing on large number graphics, similar to his style. So, I looked into his background and images which could inspire us further. We were also advised to this about the idea of white space and how it adds to the imagery, creating a graphically thought out magazine spread.

My favourite page spread I have found of his is this to the left. I feel it works well with the image used as the image seems to be rising up from the bottom of the page whereas the writing is coming down from the top stopping half way. NY in capitals is powerful and together using a smaller paragraph to start and building the text up to this bold end provides an interesting way of making a page more than just words and pictures. I found our Willy Fleckhaus was an inspiration to many designers and was known for his work in Twen magazine, which was 'Germany's zeitgeist magazine of the 1960s' (Eye Magazine,2017). Twen were known for pushing boundaries in graphics and like the image on the right creating a powerful statement using typography. I feel his style of design would be helpful when making our magazine as the use loud titles are in line with what type of design we wanted to create. Also it makes us think about text placement and different ways to use text on our page. For example on the left the text mirrors the shape of the instrument in the picture, providing a clever link from page to page.

PROMOTION After starting our magazine and heading towards the deadline date we needed to start thinking about how we will promote the magazine. When we started the research for our magazine we also started an Instagram account (see below) which we shared our ideas on. After our first shoot, mentioned earlier in this DPJ we changed our idea after feedback from the tutors and gathered a new idea of what is now Night & Day.

I then took the task of re-working our instagram to fit with our new magazine pitch, changing the logo to fit the magazine, adapting our statement and adding our playlists Spotify link. I also created story highlight covers for when we start posting more regular content so they are organised and easily readable for our followers. My task over the next few days is to start getting the word out there by following magazines and students to get interest in the magazine. After the shoots are finished I can then decide on content for the Instagram to promote the magazine.

I then created highlights for the COLLABS section on our Instagram using the artists work and our interviews to tag the collaborators. This gave us conversation with our collaborators and informed them the magazine was being made and they would start to see more of their content being made.

SPOTIFY Working on the magazine, we decided to create a Festival Ready page to make the magazine relevant for the time it launches. As festival season starts to approach in May we thought as our magazine is based around music it links well to include and it is what our customer would be interested in at the time in the year. As part of our festival page we thought as well as including our picks of festival clothes this season; linking back to the marketing mix, we could make a playlist on our ultimate festival songs. Me and Liv made this playlist; which is now live on the Night & Day Spotify profile.

EDITS FOR INSTAGRAM After Jess took the photos of Agne in the clothes from Native Youth I needed to edit one of the photos for our Instagram stories. I used the apps; colour story and Rookie Cam to add warmth and texture. I also have been keeping taking ohotos and videos for our highlights and stories to show our development. The post to the left features the collaborators being written into the magazine.

These three links to Spotify are made for the magazine but i have also put them on our Instagram so followers can screen shot and upload them to Spotify for a direct link to the playlists. These fit with our theme and fit well on our Spotify, clearly displaying the same brand image throughout.

FINAL TOUCHES Our final tutorial made us motivated and encouraged to finish our magazine in the best possible way. John and Lucie liked the Spotify and Instagram graphics and felt that it worked really well that the links and everything corresponded. They did say we needed to think about our layout and giving some stories more pages to make the magazine flow a bit better and make it less 'stuck together' in a sense. After this we inputted all our work and decided on which stories to enlarge and curate a bigger space for, which gave the magazine a longer and less rushed feel.Â

As I have been in control with Spotify and all the links to work for our magazine, me and Liv worked on the intro page together (above) this shows our ideas of using the cover art of the albums we have taken the songs from and developed a stylised inside cover. I also wrote the bio for the magazine which features inside and on our Instagram as well as the bio for each half of the publication. I feel it describes the magazine perfectly describing a new idea and something quite special through words.Â

Our food shoot at this point also has not made it into the magazine due to the amount of work from collaborators and I feel it would not fit in well with the style the magazine has evolved into.

FINAL PAGES OF MY SOURCED COLLABORATORS EMILY RYALLSÂ

LILY FINLAY

EVALUATION Working on this magazine has been both a learning curve and an incredible experience. It has taught me how to work confidently and effectively as a group to ensure the best possible outcome and has been a success overall. I feel I worked well as a member of the group, working mainly on the overall finishing of the magazine and content, working on our Instagram page and Spotify to ensure all profiles are consistent with the aesthetic of the magazine. My organisational skills were a main benefit to this project, keeping everyone on track and constantly keeping up with what we need to do by whichever dates, bringing the group together and organising tasks. As a group, myself; Olivia Motley, Kiera Murray, Jessica May and Sinead Jordan, work so well together and I can clearly see how close we worked on this project by the consistent style and content. Olivia did so well on the overall design of the magazine, incorporating all our ideas perfectly. I feel my input to the magazine has been a really important part of it all coming together, helping Liv design aspects of the magazine and having control of the Instagram and Spotify allowed me to experiment with ideas for posts and the overall highlights section to make our Instagram stories organised to show the development and the collaborators of the magazine. The idea for a music style magazine in which Night & Day turned into was my original idea and I am still so happy everyone was on board and turned the thought into reality. I would honestly love to continue the magazine in the future, maybe once we all have learnt a bit more about promotion and our skill levels rise. Overall, I hope my DPJ has captured the journey of my involvement in the curation of our magazine and given insight into my thought processes and how I managed different hurdles along the way.
