If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be? Turkey – warm, good food, plenty of sights to see What do you secretly indulge in? I’m a big biscuit lover, so long as it isn’t a ginger biscuit Finally, how do you stay positive? I don’t take anything to heart and I just try to keep being the best I can. Exercise needs to be fun. Sweating away in the gym can be just so boring so I hope you can benefit from our features on gentle exercise or take the opportunity to practice yoga in a quiet corner at home.
Fashion is important to us all and I especially love the stunning clothes from our Awaken shoot. They’re just what I want to brighten my life, as the days get shorter. On a personal note I’m excited to share my holiday snaps with you. I was fortunate to have an amazing holiday in India and it really helped that my travelling companion was an amazing photographer as well as friend – her photographs help keep the memories alive. Just a little tip – if you need a treat and can’t afford anything too excessive – try the muffins on page 84. Delicious and very healthy! What more can you want! More muffins please! I’d love to know what you think about this issue, so please tweet @eden_magazine_uk and let us know.

Thanks to technology it is now easier than ever to stay connected to work, but this makes it even harder to switch off in your own personal time. Many, especially women, feel more vulnerable in the workplace, worrying about being overlooked for promotion or even the prospect of losing their job. This results in more hours being put into their professional life, forgetting how important the balance between work and personal time is. So how can you combat this?
Regain Control Words by Katie Calvert
Do you often forget important anniversaries? And spend all of your social time talking about work and bore your new date with work problems? Or even forget to eat? Then it’s definitely time to reassess your work/life balance and eden is here to help!
You must learn to say no! We are all guilty of saying yes at work because we think it will make life easier for us. But does it? Instead we find ourselves weighed down by a never ending list, the pressure piling on. Let your employer know when work expectations and demands are too much. The more you do, the more will be expected of you and no one is ‘super woman’. Employers aren’t always aware of where the pressures lie and must be told in order to address them correctly. This isn’t a sign of weakness; rather it demonstrates your ability to seek help in order to complete a task efficiently, effectively and to the best standards.
A breath of fresh air brings down your stress levels Not everything is a top priority; it is unrealistic to think so and will simply add to your workload. Set realistic deadlines and make lists. As boring as it sounds this practice is helpful and so satisfying when a task can be ticked off as complete. Don’t forget to take essential breaks. Taking proper breaks will help refresh your mind. Don’t sit at your desk with a sandwich; leave the office if possible at lunchtime. Whether it be a simple stroll around the nearby park or even just sitting in a coffee shop, a change of scenery is vital. A breath of fresh air brings down your stress levels and allows you to go back to the office and face those work problems with renewed energy. If you work from home, work only in a certain
18 eden magazine
area, so that when you get up for breaks or leave the working day behind, you can close the door right behind you! That age old advice that exercise helps alleviate stress is important. In order to have a successful work life balance you must find the time to prioritise your physical and mental well-being. Exercise is the key to that. It could be a brisk 10-minute walk or an hour’s dance class. Make it fun! Treat it as something that will relax your body and allow you to take a break from over thinking work issues.
Your friends know you best, and they know what makes you happy Get a hobby, or shake the cobwebs off an old one. The pleasure and enjoyment from something you love can make going to work much easier and it gives yourself something to look forward to if your job isn’t exactly what you want to do. Put some of that time and energy into your friendships. Listening to their worries can put yours into perspective and talking through problems can often make them seem far less important. Your friends know you best and they know what makes you happy. But if work is the last thing you want to talk about then they’re there to help you forget those stresses, so enjoy yourself! Finding the time to relax or having the strength to say no certainly isn’t easy. But never feel guilty. As you begin to manage the right work life balance your mental and physical well-being will improve and in turn so will your work ethic. You benefit and so will everyone else! Try the ‘CrunchTime’ app. It helps you achieve work-life balance goals, tracking how much sleep time you’ve had, work hours and overtime worked, mood, and vacation taken.

Out of Hours Words by Katie Calvert
Keep a pair of classic stilettos under your desk. A simple pair of nude courts will do. A beautiful, inexpensive necklace from the high street can be hidden away in your desk draw. Or how about a knockout ring or bold earrings to draw attention to your freshly made up face? Have an embellished clutch to hand, one which is big enough to fit all your essentials in. Outerwear – If you have the space, keep an evening jacket at work. If not, your smart work coat will work just as well.
A
n evening out can be the boost you need to get through a stressful day, so don’t pass the opportunity up simply because you feel unprepared. These simple adjustments, that require little effort, will effectively alter your work look and give you the confidence to head out and have fun.
Touch up your foundation and use an illuminator. YSL touché éclat is a big favourite! Adding lashings of mascara and an extra dash of eyeliner on your lower lash line will create a darker look for the night. Prefer strong lips? Change your lip colour; a deep red is a must! Finally touch up your eyebrows to give a polished appearance.
You’ve been asked if you’re free for cocktails straight after work. You scrutinize yourself in the mirror but with no time to go home, and feeling tired and scruffy after a day sat at a desk; your heart just isn’t in it! Part of the fun of going on a night out is looking and feeling fab. You need a sexy pair of shoes that make you stand tall and the lippy that screams fun! So how can you be ready for the unexpected? Keeping a few simple accessories and the right beauty products at work will transform your look instantly. Working hard all day doesn’t mean you can’t have fun at night!
Hair is a defining feature for most. We all wish we could have a spare pair of straighteners to hand at work, but unfortunately that’s pretty impractical. Instead, dry shampoo is a lifesaver, making hair look fresher with more volume. If you prefer your hair up, an elegant topknot is the way forward. Tie your hair up high in a ponytail and wrap the hair around into a bun. Pull a few ends out to prevent a ballerina look! Finally, a few drops of your favourite perfume as you leave the office and you’re ready to put the working day behind you, relax and have fun!

Boom or Bust? Words by Bethanie Lane
T
he 2014 ELLE Style awards saw 45 year old Hollywood starlet Renee Zellweger stun everybody when she stepped out on the red carpet looking quite frankly, like a different person entirely. It’s not exactly shocking to us when we hear of a new celebrity having a breast enlargement or a bit of liposuction here and there; however when it happened to be our very own Bridget Jones, the entire world went into meltdown! But let’s be honest, as a nation we’re not exactly innocent when it comes to sticking to our natural looking guns. The majority of us tend to change aspects of our personal appearances more than we change our underwear! So who are we to judge? The niggling question is WHY do we feel this pressing need to change every inch of ourselves? Be it through make up, fake tan or even more worryingly cosmetic surgery, 99% of us in the UK are guilty of some kind of artificial enhancement. It seems that in the last few years especially, the age range for surgical and non surgical enhancement has lowered dramatically. Procedures like Lip Fillers now see a target consumer base of just 18-25 year olds, who, it could be argued, appear to have been completely and
utterly brainwashed by reality TV that they can’t bare the way that they look naturally. From American shows such as ‘Girls of the Playboy Mansion’ to shows like ‘Geordie Shore’ and ‘TOWIE’, artificially enhanced female bodies are absolutely everywhere! From boob jobs to Botox, our society in the current day and age is definitely not shy when it comes to bragging about how they have changed the way they look. Is it any wonder that self confidence is at an all time low? Jodie Cunningham is the young woman that caused one of the biggest controversies regarding the NHS in the last year and a half. Acquiring a breast enlargement on the NHS isn’t exactly something which happens every day, so when it does happen naturally we as a nation are pretty disgusted that our tax payers money has funded such an unnecessary procedure. Miss Cunningham explained that she was so unhappy with her current body that it was causing her depression, a serious medical condition. However, once the surgery had been carried out, she then decided to ridicule and brag about how our money had funded her ambition to become a glamour model. Naturally, this sent the UK into
frenzy and branded her one of the most hated people in the country for 2014. When we delve further into the story, we have to consider whether Cunningham really is the only one to blame. As much as some people within the industry don’t like to admit it, there is still an idealised image that women feel they need to aspire to look like. Without big boobs Jodie felt as though she couldn’t achieve her career ambition, when in reality we are born the way we are for a reason. It really is baffling how even in 2014 women still feel the need to alter their appearances to please other people; this isn’t the Stone Age after all! Between 2012 and 2013 there was a considerable 17% rise in surgical cosmetic procedures in the UK. Continuing on from this substantial surge, cosmetic surgery has continued to go from strength to strength and ultimately advance into a multi million pound industry. It’s no secret that women all over the world feel the need to change how they look in order to raise their self esteem or to appear more attractive to the opposite sex, however have you ever wondered how many of these women worry about or even consider the potential health risks that could arise? Probably not many! As they should, most
surgeries and clinics will explain the possible health implications to their clients; however these surgeons are ultimately earning a living through this industry. They are going to do everything in their power to close the ‘deal’ as it were, and continuously mentioning potential risks isn’t the best sales pitch! Recently it was reported that a British woman had died whilst undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure in Thailand to enhance her buttocks. Within the report it was announced that the surgeon operating on the female was unlicensed and uncertified. This really is an issue that needs addressing urgently! Whilst the majority of females within Britain are relatively happy with the way they look and would never consider cosmetic surgery, there is still a high percentage of women that do feel the need to alter their body shapes. The one thing that should be stressed to these women is to PLEASE do your research before you make such a rash decision! Look into the clinic which you are interested in, look into your surgeon and make sure they are properly qualified for the procedure you want. Don’t put your life at risk for the sake of a cheap operation. After all, it will cost you so much more in the long run.

Motivation Mantra Words by Bethanie Lane
W
hen it comes to physical fitness, we as women know better than anyone how difficult sticking to a routine can be. Especially if we are attempting to balance our exercise plans with a full time professional job and some kind of social life. To help our female readers combat this issue, eden’s Features Editor Beth Lane has devised a detailed plan, which outlines a selection of different ideas to help you slowly but surely ease yourself in to an effective fitness regime. We may all think it’s a bit of a cliché when it comes to maintaining a healthy balanced diet, but one of the most important things is eating a regular daily intake of fruit and vegetables, which will encourage an overall healthy lifestyle and create a focused mindset. An easy way of incorporating fruit into your diet is to mix fresh berries with natural Greek yoghurt for breakfast. This will give you an early morning boost and keep your energy levels high until lunch time. However, maintaining a balanced diet also means that ‘naughty’ foods are as encouraged as the healthy stuff. Biscuits, chocolate bars, sweets, the list is endless! If eaten in moderation, these foods that are often branded as ‘bad’ for you aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Exercise and physical fitness is supposed to
24 eden magazine
be something which we enjoy doing, it shouldn’t become a burden. If you currently have a diet plan in place then try your best to stick to it, but remember that indulging a little in something sweet can sometimes help a fitness regime by keeping you on your toes. When it comes to sleep, we are all pretty different. Some of us are early birds; others class ourselves as bed bugs. However in terms of exercising and physical fitness, those of us who are morning people definitely have the upper advantage! Getting up early will encourage your mood for exercise. Leaving your work outs, whatever they may be until after work or even during your lunch break will cause your brain to overcrowd. You may think it will help you to relax by breaking up a hectic working day; however it will cause you to rush even more. Getting it out of the way in the morning before work will give you time to focus on the day and tasks ahead. Similarly to that idea, making sure that you stick to a specific daily routine will encourage continuity in your exercise plans and help you get into the swing of things on a regular basis. Try not to drift in and out of a fitness regime; it will make it a lot harder to see any kind of positive results and will unfortunately cause
disappointment in the long run. There’s nothing worse than starting at the gym as a novice and accidentally sitting upside down or back to front on equipment in front of a crowded room. Therefore, if possible, get an induction. It really is worth it! You may feel slightly embarrassed, almost as though you’re admitting you have no clue about anything whatsoever. You are not alone! They are there for a reason, and getting some proper advice will make your future workouts quicker and easier. Depending on the gym you attend, you may have built in televisions or overhead music playing, however, creating your own playlist and filling it with music that gets you up and running will prove even more effective as it will be personalised to your own specific tastes. Quick tip – slow and steady tunes may be nice for an early morning drive but upbeat, up-tempo music will give you something to strive towards and will keep you motivated for longer. If you’re not a confident exerciser and the gym feels too intimidating, there are no rules against using the outdoors as your own personal gym. Take advantage of nearby parks, fields, running tracks or even streets in your hometown.
There are thousands of free and accessible areas around the country which will help you to stay fit on your own terms. In terms of ultimately raising your confidence when in a physical environment, be it the gym or outside, fashion really is key! ‘Look good, feel good’ as many people say, is one motto that we at eden are happy to endorse. Settling for ill-fitting leggings and trainers from your high school years is never the right decision. Spending a bit of time researching the best clothing pieces for the exercise you’re most interested in will benefit your work outs in the long run. Sports shops such as Sports Direct and Intersport have a wide variety of women’s clothing brands for affordable prices so you can look and feel fabulous at the same time. Last but not least, don’t dwell! Comparing yourself with other people will never be productive; everyone is different, from personalities to body shapes and priorities. What works for you in terms of physical exercise may not necessarily work for somebody else, so you must make sure to focus on yourself! Your body will progress at a completely different pace to other people so just relax and go with the flow.

e’ve all been guilty of not getting enough sleep from time to time, whether it’s due to long hours at work, stress or just too much caffeine in your diet. But how important is it to be getting those hours of shuteye every night? eden have been on the case to discover the benefits of sleep and what it can do to improve your healthy lifestyle. After learning what you can gain from a good night sleep, you’ll find yourself itching to get ready for bed now! Lack of sleep can lead to many health issues. Just some of these include; high blood pressure, slow reaction time, impaired learning and even weight gain! Sleep is often forgotten about and at the bottom of priorities for busy working women, but to get the best out of your day you need to use those hours of recharging the mind and body. If you’re looking for an energy boost, stay away from sugary snacks and caffeine drinks, as this is only a temporary kick in your drive and you’ll find that your energy levels will crash later on in the day. For a more effective energy boost you need to make time for an early night on a regular basis. Trust us, you’ll thank us for it later! The amount of sleep we need changes as we get older and can differ from person to person. Your friend may not even be able to function without her eight hours of sleep

every night, however you may be able to perform on a lot less. It all depends on the individuals day to day activities. Your sleep needs will change as you’re faced with new challenges each day. So what exactly are all these amazing benefits of sleep? The list begins with boosting your mood and mind. You’re at your best after a full night sleep as your brain has had a generous amount of time to recover from the day. However, when you’re sleeping, your mind is still busy at work. Sleep strengthens your memory and helps your mind become susceptible to learning new talents. You’ll find that after a good night sleep, you will perform a lot better when trying to learn a new skill, as you’ll feel refreshed and ready to take new information in at ease.
Slee deprivation can have the same effect as alcohol Getting creative is always more productive when you’re well rested and ready to be inspired. This is because the emotional component of your brain is strengthened during sleep, which helps spur on the creative process. So if you’re wondering why you’ve hit a wall with new and fresh ideas, you may need to look into what time you went to bed last night!
sleep is the main component you need. It improves stamina and boosts metabolism. It is also a natural way to help your muscles recover from intense exercise after an action packed evening at the gym! Your metabolism will thank you for a good nights sleep, as they are both controlled by the same part of your brain. So the more you look after it by getting those all important hours of kip, your metabolism will sure enough look after you. You’ll find that lack of sleep will shorten your attention span and slow down your reaction time, making it difficult to be productive throughout the day. Making sure you get those vital hours will keep your attention sharp and allow you to stay on the ball. Sleep deprivation can have the same effect as alcohol on your mind. Now you wouldn’t go about your day-to-day business under the influence, so why should you do it without the rest your body needs? So now you know the benefits you’re missing out on when you decide to sacrifice your early bedtime for other things. But it’s up to you to make the most out of getting the shuteye you need to achieve the best for your day. Don’t let other elements of your life take over the fact that you need your sleep, because with out it, we’re all zombies!

Yoga For Beginners Words by Katie Calvert
Want to get more done with less stress? Make space for yoga in your life. These 3 simple poses will stretch and strengthen core parts of your body and relax the mind.
Upward Facing Dog Sanskrit name: Urdhva mukha svanasana Benefits: Stretches and strengthens the spine, arms, and wrists. How to: Lie facedown on the floor, legs extended with the tops of your feet on the floor. Squeeze your shoulder blades together, straighten your arms and bring your torso and legs up off the floor as if you were doing a half push-up. You must distribute your weight evenly, between your hands and toes. Slide your hands against the floor towards your feet and keep the hips high. Relax and repeat.
Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured, and endure what cannot be cured BKS Iyengar
Downward Facing Dog Sanskrit name: Adho mukha svanasana Benefits: Stretches and strengthens the whole body, encouraging full-body circulation. How to: Get on all fours with hands and knees shoulder-and-hips-width apart. Walk your hands forward and spread your fingers wide for stability. Raise the hips and straighten the legs so your body looks like an inverted V. Let your head hang and move your shoulder blades towards the hips.Try keeping your heels on the floor; if this isn’t possible to begin with, with practice, this will become easier. To “walk your dog” alternately press your heels down.
Child’s Pose Sanskrit name: Balasana Benefits: Gently stretches the hips, thighs, and ankles. How to: Sit upright comfortably on your heels, keeping the big toes touching. Roll your torso forward and bring your forehead to rest on the ground in front of you. Lower your chest to your knees as close as you comfortably can. Bring your arms back alongside your thighs with the palms facing upwards. Alternatively, you can stretch your arms in front of you with the palms toward the floor – choose whichever is most comfortable. Hold the pose and breathe into your torso. Exhale and release to get deeper into your fold.

Bringing Adventure Back Words by Emma Foster
“O
h I need to get back to the gym, I’ve put on so much weight,” moans my friend over a calorie filled, alcohol fuelled meal out. There are two things wrong with that oh-so overused sentence (not including the fact she is contradicting herself with food and alcohol as we speak.) Firstly, exercise is not, and shouldn’t be all about weight loss, and secondly, there’s only enough gym work you can do before losing motivation and going home. What my friend, and so many others like her need to realise, is that there is more to exercise than losing weight, and one of those things is having fun, believe it or not. . It’s time to bring back the adventure into your workouts and get excited for your next fitness fix. Think back to your childhood days, when running around the school playground was the highlight of your day, swimming in the sea was considered an exciting holiday activity and climbing trees was second nature. All those things came so naturally and you somehow found the
38 eden magazine
energy to not want to stop. Try climbing a tree next time you’re in the park and you may get some funny looks and fall flat on your face, what happened to our childhood sense of adventure? Well, we all grew up, got jobs and figured there is more to life than a daily run around. But imagine if you could re-create that sense of achievement and excitement you got from getting all the way round a park assault course. There is no excuse not to do psychical exercise at least once a week, they say ‘if the gym don’t fit, you must not quit’ and here at eden magazine we want to challenge you to get out of your comfort zone, get fit the adrenaline filled way and bring back your childhood by trying a new activity. One of those activities could be climbing, climbing walls are relatively cheap and have qualified instructors to help you with your every step (and fall). Climbing works your upper body muscles, arms, chest and shoulders in a way that will make you ache in places you
didn’t know were possible. If you are interested in improving your cardio, toning up or losing weight, the climbing wall is the place for you. We challenge you to take on an adventurous mind set, to try everything at least once, because how do you know if you like an activity if you haven’t even tried it? Psychologists say that a sense of adventure and stepping out of your comfort zone improve your well-being and keep you feeling youthful. Along with the added benefits of keeping yourself in shape, adventurous workouts get you excited, make you laugh and give you time to really lose yourself. The whole point of activity based workouts is for us to run, jump, play and have fun like we did as children, to really find a hobby and a passion in psychical activity. Now you may have heard the idea that women should train like men, lift more weights and do less cardio, but what if both men and women started training
like animals? A revolution in the fitness industry, The Animal Flow Workout, devised by fitness professional Mike Fitch, is a workout which incorporates animal movements and using your own body strength to create a fit, toned body while having fun behaving like animals. The workout is a series of ground based movements with elements from various bodyweight-training disciplines to create a fun, challenging workout. Classes such as this can be found all over the country and are great for bringing back the child like state of enjoyment and energy, you may forget you’re actually doing a workout. Your challenge is to find an activity you can enjoy, one that makes you feel alive and free. Being outdoors instead of in a cramped gym can also boost our moods and give your body the fresh air it needs. So next time your friends ask to meet up to eat and drink, why not suggest a fun filled activity evening, and no moaning about getting fat, just enjoy yourselves, you’ll thank us later.
eden’s Adrenaline Filled Bucket List Tough Mudder Challenge You may have heard of this, the Tough Mudder Challenge is ‘probably the toughest event on the planet’ and is designed to test your stamina, strength, teamwork and mental grit. It is basically a 12 mile run, full of military-style obstacles and a whole lot of mud. Sign up and raise money for Help the Heroes, then start training hard. Having the Tough Mudder to prepare for will give you no excuses and you’ll have an amazing time on the day. To find out more go to toughmudder.com Snowboarding or Skiing It can be hard to get into snow sports because, to state the obvious, the UK doesn’t get much snow and it can be pricey to visit the Alps once a year to keep up this hobby. But as firm believers of trying everything once, we think snow sports are a must. The UK has many dry ski slopes at which you can take lessons and get to grips with skiing or boarding, you may enjoy it so much that you plan your next vacation to the real slopes. Boot Camp Military style fitness boot camps are rapidly becoming more popular and accessible around the country. They usually consist of an outdoor group workout with a scary instructor telling you to scramble along the floor and do all sorts of intense exercises. But if it’s the fun, adrenaline factor you are looking for, look no further than a boot camp. Surfing Surfing is one of those sports which look effortless and cool…it is not. Surfing uses your whole body strength and is a very tiring but very fun workout. Try a surf lesson next time you venture to the seaside, most locations have trained instructors and board/wetsuit hire, just don’t expect to look like a Baywatch extra the first time you try.

Exercises in Small Spaces Words by Bethanie Lane
eden understands that to exercise effectively in a small city centre flat is not the easiest of tasks. Especially when the largest room in said flat is no more than 6ft by 4ft and barely big enough for a single bed. To help this common recurring problem, we have compiled a list of the most popular and effective simple exercises which can be adapted to use every day household furniture to get the best outcome.
Lunge with Bicep Curl eden calls it: The Resistance Test Body parts: Calf Muscles/Biceps/Triceps Aims to: Strengthen and tone calf muscles
Double Leg Stretch eden calls it: The Towel Roll Body parts: Abdominal muscles/ Back muscles Aims to: Strengthen and stretch your core muscles.
Wall Squats eden calls it: The Invisible Chair Body parts: Leg muscles/Glutei Muscles Aims to: Strengthens quads and calf muscles
To make this exercise more effective without having to step foot in a gym, grab yourself a couple of resistance bands (Amazon.co.uk £13.99). Creating tension between your muscles and the bands will help to push you even further and create a personal challenge that you will feel obliged to beat after every single rep.
Originally a simple Pilate’s move, the Double Leg Stretch is perfect for those of you who only have a small patch of bedroom carpet to work with. A simple but effective exercise which really helps to lengthen body lines and strengthen your muscles.
All you need for this great effective exercise is a wall and the ability to maintain a good amount of internal stamina. This exercise is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one so a large amount of deep breathing and a positive mind frame will really help you to combat the wall squat.
To start, create a space big enough that you can lie down comfortably with your arms at your sides. Before laying down fully place a rolled up bath towel under your lower back. Once laid down, bring your head slightly above the ground at around a 50 degree angle and bring your knees in close to your chest. Place both hands on your knees and hold the position.
To start, pick your favourite wall in your house/ flat/apartment etc. Stand with your back pressed as far back to the wall as possible and stand tall. Next, place both your feet out in front of you, around 2ft should do it and make sure they are shoulders width apart. Then slide your back down the wall so that your knees sit at a 90 degree angle, keeping your thighs parallel. Simply imagine that you are sat on a chair in an upright position, this will help you create the correct stance. Place both hands on your thighs and hold this position.
To start, choose either your right or left leg and place the centre of the resistance band under the ball of your foot. Then with the opposite leg, take one large step back and form a lunged position. Make sure your back knee matches up with your front ankle as this will increase intensity when dropping further into the lunge. Next, simultaneously pull up on the resistance band with both arms to form a bicep curl and bend into your lunge so that the back knee is lifted only slightly off the floor. Stand up and repeat for 30 reps before switching legs. Repeat this exercise on each leg for 2 sets (30 reps in each set) twice a day for maximum improvement.
Next, slowly pull your knees away from your chest and bring your arms over your head so you create a horizontal line with your body. Make sure both your arms and legs are raised slightly off the ground. The towel is creating height between you and the floor, making sure your position is held for longer and both your abdominal and back muscles are being pushed to their limits. Continue to pull your body back in and out for a total of 10 reps and then rest. Repeat this exercise for a total of 4 sets (10 reps in each set) around twice a day for maximum improvement.

Depending on how physically advanced you are will determine how long your body can hold this position. At an estimate, holding the squat for around 30 seconds should be long enough to feel your muscles working. After the 30 seconds, stand up and rest. Repeat this for 3 sets once a day. Eden’s Top Tip: Positioning yourself on a wall opposite a television will help distract your mind from this exercise and help you to withstand it for longer.

miscellany.c om Grip Strength Training
Tricep Dips
This exercise will essentially help you to improve your physical fitness and even better, help out with the mid-week laundry wash! Tumble dryer? What tumble dryer? After a few weeks of repetitive motions with this exercise, your bath towels will dry themselves in a heartbeat.
In a gym environment you would usually use a bench or parallel bars, however we understand that in a normal home these are not particularly every day essentials! However using the edge of any bed or even a hard back dining chair will do the same job. Alternatively tricep dips can be done on the floor, however you would probably be looking at a less effective outcome.
eden calls it: Towel Wring Out Body parts: Forearms Aims to: Strengthen and tone forearm muscles
To start, grab a wet towel from either the washing machine or just throw one under the shower for a minute or two. The wetter the better! Next, stand under your shower or above your bath so as not to create too much mess and twist your towel into a long worm like shape. Folding the towel in half will help you to create a lot more grip and essentially will make the exercise easier. Then simply start wringing out your towel, backwards and forwards in a continuous motion until all the water has disappeared. Let’s face it; we don’t want too many wet towels every day, what a waste that would be! Therefore Eden suggests wringing out 2 towels every week. As we said before, the wetter the better! Top Tip: Placing a bucket under the towel will catch any excess water which can be recycled to water your plants.

eden calls it: Bed Dips Body parts: Biceps/Triceps Aims to: Strengthen and tone Tricep muscles.
To start, place your hands on the edge of your bed/chair around shoulder width apart. Extend both your legs out in front of you, keeping them parallel to each other. Slide your body off the edge of the bed so that you are hovering in mid air and straighten your arms up right, keeping a slight bend in your elbows to create some form of tension. Next, slowly drop your body towards to floor until your elbows are bent at a 90 degree angle. Once you can feel yourself nearing the floor, straighten your arms out again so that you return to your starting position. Repeat this for 10 reps. Repeat this exercise for 3 sets (10 reps in each set) once a day. Top Tip: Spreading your feet further away from the bed will raise the difficulty of this exercise. If you are fairly amateur, using a stable chair will prove more effective than the soft flexibility of a mattress.

Collaboration Craze Words by Bethanie Lane
F
ashion enthusiasts are no stranger to the hype and buzz which is created when two acclaimed professionals decide to collaborate on ideas to create a highly sought after range. From the Kardashian sisters and Dorothy Perkins to Rihanna and River Island, celebrity collaborations prove to be extremely successful and often generate a high profit for the fashion brand. Recent fashion headlines announced an exciting up and coming High Street celebrity collaboration, which will hit the market in the next year or so. A thoroughly successful international brand and a worldwide sensation within the music industry; what could be better? Of course we could only be talking about the queen of R&B herself, Beyonce and the most talked about brand within the Arcadia group, Topshop. However this type of collaboration is not one which we see on a regular basis; rather than creating a generic ‘Going Out’ range; this venture will see two industry professionals create an ‘Activewear’ label, specialising in Fitness and Sports clothing. The collaboration will stand as more of a partnership, creating a long lasting friendship between the brand and the American beauty. Of course, this is not the first successful sportswear collaboration to grace the fashion industry. With the idea of ‘fashionable fitness’ becoming ever more popular, brands all over the world have begun creating their very own take on the trend. From tracksuit style trousers to bomber jackets and stringer vests, the High Street take on sportswear is extensive and continuously developing. In 2005 the acclaimed high-end designer Stella McCartney looked to the future and discovered
46 eden magazine
a large gap in the market for Designer-Brand collaboration within the fitness wear industry. Teaming up with one of the largest sports brands in the world, Stella McCartney began a journey with Adidas which would see them go from designing products for their own mass market to being the ones which would create the 2012 team GB uniforms; something that would be remembered forever. More importantly this was the first time in the history of the games that a fashion designer by trade, actually designed and created the uniforms. This once again showed that fitness and fashion were beginning to merge together into one well oiled machine. 2014 also saw a highly anticipated collaboration hit the High Street in spectacular fashion. When it was announced at the Coachella Festival earlier this year, the whole industry went wild about the idea of a partnership between the High end designer Alexander Wang and the international brand H&M. This collaboration was always expected to be at the forefront when it came to current trends, so when it was revealed that the design focus would be on wearable fitness clothing, we were all intrigued to see what the designer would come up with. It’s safe to say, he did not disappoint! The collection saw strappy tees, cropped bralets and baggy jumpers turn into professional Activewear that can be worn in and out of the gym. The collection still embodies the obvious ‘Alexander Wang’ trademark to entice a wide international audience, however with a relatively low price point, the usual H&M consumers can still enjoy the High Street brand they have come to know and love.

T
he iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld hit the headlines late last year when he dressed all of his catwalk models for the Chanel Spring/Summer 2014 show in specialised trainers. This moment in fashion history became the starting point for one of the biggest style trends to hit the current decade. Up until recent years, it was a common misconception that trainers could only be worn when at the gym or taking part in some sort of physical activity. However in the current day and age, they are as popular a fashion necessity as the LBD. From specialised sportswear brands such as Nike and Adidas to High Street names like Vans and Converse, the sneaker scene is everywhere and offers one of the biggest ranges for all occasions. Let’s face it, every single one of us owns at least one pair of killer heels that we absolutely adore looking at, but when it comes to wearing them for a long period of time... well let’s just say crucifixion of the feet comes to mind! That’s where a good solid pair of trainers (or two or three) comes in handy. All of you regular gym goers will easily own a trusty pair of bulky running shoes that you’d swear by for comfort, but would you ever

wear them on a shopping trip or a night out with friends? The answer I imagine is probably ‘no way!’, which would have been understandable a few years ago. With the trend becoming ever more popular throughout the fashion industry, throwing on a pair of Nike’s with a skater dress for a few cocktails with the girls is as instinctive as brushing our teeth on a morning. Less is more as they say, and casual dressing has become a thing of the future. Similarly to all trends, there are stunners and stinkers of trainers seen on a day-to-day basis. Personal favourites include animal print slipper styles and laced up fluorescent head turners that create a big impact. However, styles such as the ‘wedge’ sneaker have lost their edge already. When we’re looking for casual and comfortable it seems pointless to combine this with a wedge! A stylish and functional pair of trainers is fast becoming a staple wardrobe piece for every woman. Whether they’re designed for running or fitness training, as long as they’ve got a sole and provide support for otherwise fragile feet, they’re good enough for absolutely everything.

Meditation The Simple Way Words by Katie Calvert
Meditation isn’t all about chanting ‘om’ and doesn’t have to be complicated. Life is increasingly stressful, with very little precious time to relax, but with these 3 straightforward steps you can work towards a relaxed mind and body in just 10 minutes
The start is what stops most people Don Shula
Before you begin, search ‘meditation music 10 minutes’ on YouTube for a wide range of music – I love ‘deep meditation 10 minutes’ by my soft music, I’ve yet to hear anything more relaxing! And set an alarm, or you could find yourself in a deep meditation for hours! Step 1: Sit somewhere quiet – don’t worry about noisy neighbours or housemates. If you find yourself getting frustrated, close your eyes with the music turned on. After 30 seconds your mind naturally gets bored and moves on. Clever! Step 2: Build up a mental picture of your body. Start at your head and notice how it is feeling. Then move to the shoulders – how do they feel? Follow the body downwards until you reach your feet. Your mind maywander but this is normal. Whenever you find your thoughts roaming, bring your mind back to your body – and if you need to start from your head again, that’s ok. Step 3: Count your breathing. Breathing ‘in’ is one count; breathing ‘out’ is another. Count to ten and repeat. When your mind wanders naturally to other places (planning what to have for dinner, for example) go back and start counting from one again. After ten minutes, open your eyes and stretch.
Remember: Minds wander very easily; so don’t get stressed when yours does. Stick with the meditation for ten days and you should see a marked improvement. Good luck!

nticipation and excitement overwhelmed us as we arrived in Delhi airport. The overnight flight left us refreshed for the day ahead and our enthusiastic and talkative driver gradually navigated his way through this impressive city of 22 million people in rush hour. We were itching to get stuck into the history of this vibrant and colourful country, and when we spotted the ruins of an old fort in the shadow of the red fort and enthusiastically asked for information, we with listened with amusement as the driver replied ‘It’s old! Nobody lives there!’ We dropped our bags off at the Maidens, a grand colonial building from the days of the Raj, and a once favoured drinking and dining den of Lord Curzon, viceroy of India (1899-1905). This rich history already wetted our appetites. With very little time to take it its full beauty, we were whisked off on a tour of Delhi, which included Gandhi’s house (it was surprising and interesting to hear of the hostility that some Indians felt towards Ghandi for the breaking up of India), and the Mughal gardens. The Mughal gardens were a joy to discover. India always conjures up bright, rich, vibrant colours and we experienced them here. I felt the real presence of the British Empire! The renowned architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, designed these stunningly beautiful Mughal gardens, and they are a combination of Mughal and British architecture.
someone work so openly was a fascinating insight into everyday life. After stopping for a photo opportunity by the lake in front of the Jal Mahal we had a quick lunch, before visiting the Pink City, Palace of Winds, The Royal Palace and finally the Jantar Mantar Observatory. Without the photos this is quickly becoming a list of names. I need to slow down!

India always conjures up bright, rich, vibrant colours and we experienced them here
Admittedly the previous day was very tiring, and we began today with a 5-hour drive to the Ranthambore National Park. For those interested in seeing the real India, this drive took us through many villages. I was in need of sleep but I found myself more focused on the Indian way of living. We arrived at our hotel, the Sawai Madhopur Lodge, another colonial hunting lodge built by the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur, which had once had Queen Elizabeth to stay We made it in time to go on an afternoon tiger safari! There is no guarantee that you will see any tigers but we were fortunate to see 2 resting in the bushes after a feed! It is hard to describe what it feels like to see a wild animal in its natural habitat, to be so close you can smell them. I felt like I was stepping into their territory but they seemed oblivious to our excitement.
Next morning, after an early breakfast we headed out to see Raj Ghat, memorial to Gandhi, and the India Gate (think arc-de-triomphe). Raj Ghat marks the spot of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation and is left open to the sky while an eternal flame burns perpetually at one end. All guests must remove their footwear before entering the Raj Ghat walls. Observing important traditions such as these, allowed us to immerse ourselves wholeheartedly into the rich culture of India, and forget the stresses of everyday life back home in England. After visiting the Raj Ghat we headed off on a five-hour drive to Jaipur. That long journey led me to one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen. The sight of the Amber Fort, a huge palace straddling the mountain ridges, took my breath away! The jewellery makers and carpet dyers were our first stop next morning. This probably doesn’t sound overly interesting and with our time being precious you may even think it a waste. But trades like these are so important in India, something that we take for granted. We arose before sunrise to visit the place in India that I had been most looking forward to – the awe-inspiring Taj Mahal Akbar, serving as his capital for 15 years, and is one of the best preserved collections of Indian Mughal architecture in India. So much beauty and architecture and the best is yet to come tomorrow. We arose before sunrise to visit the place in India that I had been most looking forward to – the aweinspiring Taj Mahal. Breathtakingly beautiful in pictures, it is even more astonishing, amazing and romantic in reality, and worth all the queuing that we had to do. We did the inevitable Diana pose, of course! The nearby Agra Fort was a surprise and a revelation, affording us fantastic views and photo opportunities. Having taken the coach back to Delhi for an overnight stop, we headed to the train station for a visit to Amritsar. We complain endlessly about our trains but I’m not sure that I ever will again. In the whole of the 5 hour train I didn’t once venture to use the hole in the floor that was the toilet. Very French though! Our next day began soberly at the Jallianwala Bagh, a public memorial garden to the people

massacred in April 1919 by British troops. After the richness and beauty of the past week and a feeling of pride in the British rule of India this experience left me embarrassed and angry at the arrogance of the British. The Indian people have been nothing but kind and respectful throughout this whole visit. Our afternoon at the border crossing with Pakistan gave me more pause for thought. We witnessed the Closing Gate Ceremony where many were singing and chanting national songs, and taunting each other. A soldier marched around theatrically, taking down the flags and closing the gate.

To see so much of India in such a short space of time did mean we spent a lot of time travelling and not a lot of time sleeping. On our last day, we took the train back to Delhi before driving to the airport. We were so tired but what we had experienced – the romantic beauty of the Taj Mahal; architecture to rival any in the world; views across the open plains and tigers in the bush, colour, beauty and courtesy, made it all worthwhile.

Compassionate Fashion Words by Katie Calvert
Given that there are so many of us, and clothes are one of the three basic needs, the conditions surrounding the textile and fashion industry are nothing short of staggering.

omen make up 85 to 90% of sweatshop workers in developing countries. Often these women have had a limited education, working in conditions that are in dire need of improvement. For them the job is important in order to feed families, to us it’s a multi-billion pound business and an obsession with fast fashion that shows no signs of slowing down. The textile and clothing industry is the second largest employer in the developing world, after agriculture, yet it is estimated that worker’s wages account for as little as 0.5%, rising to just 4%. A recent study stated that consumers would be willing to pay 15% more for a product that they knew had not come from a sweatshop, yet doubling the wages of a sweatshop worker would only cost an extra 1.8%. Furthermore, research shows that empowering and investing in women has a cumulative bonus – women are likely to spend their income on families, on education, and health bringing long-term positive change and prosperity to communities. One factory in Vietnam established a kindergarten and health clinic, which reduced staff turnover

and absenteeism, resulting in saved costs and sustained productivity. But this isn’t enough. That Vietnamese factory is just one positive story amongst a sea of negativity and greed. As long as we, the consumer, carry on buying into fast fashion and it’s devastating consequences, without considering what other options there are, businesses will continue to under pay workers. The consumer holds the power to change things. The newspapers regularly report on retail giants collaborating with a well-known public figure on things that will benefit the environment or the community. Veja and Lily Cole have recently launched a collection of ethical (and stylish) rainforest-inspired trainers. It’s perfect marketing; the brand receives brownie points from the media and public, increasing their overall sales, whilst the consumer buys something that leaves their conscience clear. But what about the companies whose sole purpose is to support workers, particularly female workers, whose aim is to better their working conditions and wages, whilst showcasing the skills that they have?
Begin to clear your conscience and buy beautiful, skilled fashion pieces Fashion ComPassion is a brilliant online boutique that works with numerous creative brands, committed to social and environmental responsibility, selling impeccably stylish ethical and sustainable fashion accessories that directly contribute to women artisans and their communities. Palestyle is one such brand. They aim to empower female refugees with job opportunities and invest in community projects, such as the water tank exchange program. Abury is another ethical brand that Fashion ComPassion works with. Each Abury piece is 100% handmade with a talented team of female artisans working together to create sustainable and ethical bags. Abury pours profits back into the community for education and development projects. Fashion ComPassion is not what most consumers would consider ethical in appearance. Their site is slick and stylish, thus bridging the gap between fashion and ethics. Cloth Roads, another company that supports artisans and their communities, has what is often perceived as a more ethical appearance but showcases items no less beautiful and skilled. Artisanat des Femmes de Khenifra, in Morocco, is a group of one hundred women from
low-income families who have joined together to establish self-sufficiency and find markets for their work, each having learned the craft of button making from their mothers or grandmothers. One other such artisanal group is WomenWeave in India. They support women with the skill of handloom weaving, working towards making it profitable and sustainable whilst providing a dignified income for women based in rural areas of India. However, time is often a constraint for many busy working females and we include ourselves, here at eden, in that. Ethical Fashion Forum (ethicalfashionforum.com) is our saviour. It is the world’s most comprehensive database of ethical fashion business and resources. Simply choose your favoured category of product, the ethics that you hold, the country you would like it to be based in, and where it was sourced from, and ethical fashion forum will give you a list of companies that adhere to your chosen criteria. Brilliantly effective for those with little knowledge of where to buy ethically, and you could discover a whole new list of fantastic fashion brands you never knew existed. There is little reference in the media of ethical brands, including the ones mentioned here, but armed with this information you can begin to clear your conscience and buy beautiful, skilled fashion pieces for yourself or as gifts.

ur relationship with food and image is one that is ever-changing. Most recently, it has become a healthy obsession. First came the thinspo craze inducing mostly young women into eating disorders and warped views surrounding body image. Fitspos then gained attention and, to some extent, is an unhealthy insight in maintaining the perfect physique, as these women, and men, constantly push themselves to their limits to reach their ultimate fitness goals. Whilst it attempts to promote a lean, fit and strong figure, it doesn’t contribute to the healthy image we should be aspiring to.

Those subject to food intolerances, are also being well looked after as the diversity in ranges are vastly improving. Better still, farmers markets are a great way to fill your fridge with wonderful ingredients. Not only are they fresh, they come straight from the farm, unharmed and organic. It nurtures the small businesses that deserve to be appreciated, cuts out the middle man and, more often than not, can be a cheaper option.
The foodie trend is a culmination of the previous health developments, focusing on the fundamentals of eating properly. It has to be one of the most positive outcomes that the perception of body image has seen to date.
The foodie is being represented by a multitude of social media enthusiasts, most of whom do it for their own satisfaction, meaning we are taking an interest in our own lifestyles and not being reliant on others to tell us to do so. Instagram, Tumblr and even search engines are dishing out results that will have you well on your way to a more fulfilling and clean eating lifestyle. The creativity and talent behind many of these individuals is immensely inspiring; you will be wondering why refined sugar was once your best friend.
First and foremost, your eating habits are the foundations of a healthy lifestyle, exercising can only reinforce and improve this. Many overlook this way of eating as they believe it to be expensive or time consuming, but tweaking the way we eat is an essential step in improving our way of living. Unlike other health trends, there is little risk associated with becoming a foodie, as you adapt into someone who appreciates good, unprocessed food, which in turn your body will thank you for.
Simply by taking a few minutes to look into this trend you will be surprised as to how easy it is to adapt to the new fashion and how quickly your ideologies surrounding food change. Everyone has their cheat days, even most health experts recommend it to keep you motivated and boost your metabolism but making small changes to your eating habits will make a huge difference to your lifestyle. Looking good is about feeling great, start small and you will soon be at ease with eating like a foodie, you won’t look back.
Corporate food companies have got their marketing down to a tee, where they con their consumers into thinking they don’t have the time to be cooking their own meals, or that they should be choosing the ‘low fat’ option as a solution to eating better. In reality, 30% less fat is likely to mean 30% less of a portion. Eateries such as Pret A Mangér, Pod and Itsu are catering to those inclined to eating well and are cropping up across the capital and slowly saturating other cities in the UK. This is the expensive way to satisfy the foodie on the go, but hope is not lost for those on a budget. You’ve heard about the wonderful health benefits that, for example, coconut oil can give you,

The best way to get your intake of fruit and vegetables is to eat what is in season. This not only provides you with foods that are at their finest but also with ones free of pesticides and additives that manipulate foods not in season.
Nature’s Kitchen Words by Lauren Tyson
This autumn, earthy vegetables are key to warming your palette. Root vegetables provide you with the antioxidants that give you the best chance to be healthy through the colder, darker months. BROCCOLI is the green superfood of vegetables. Thought of as a cancer fighter, diabetes preventer, and lowers blood pressure, this vegetable contains vitamins that detox, improve bone and heart health and aid digestion. SWEDE AND TURNIPS provide essential vitamins A and C. These root vegetables form the perfect basis for warming autumnal dishes. COURGETTES have a high water content and are low in calories. They are great in a gluten free diet and can be used as a substitute for pasta and in baking. AUBERGINES are helpful in controlling weight and are high in potassium which lowers blood pressure. The aubergine is a great meat-alternative for a vegetarian diet. COX’S APPLES’ peel is actually where most antioxidants are found. Fat-free and low in calories, apple sauce can be used as a substitute for the refined sugars used in baking Its taste is a healthy way to satisfy a sweet tooth. PEARS are another fruit that are high in antioxidants and are more easily digestible than other fruits.
BLACKBERRIES make you feel fuller for longer and add vibrancy to your meal. They are a tangy accompaniment to a smoothie which can sweeten and take the edge off the green vegetables you can use. CHESTNUTS have fewer calories and less fat than other nuts, are gluten free and a great snack. The fats found in nuts are normally good for you but you should only consume around 40 grams a day. ROSEMARY AND CHIVES are the herbs of the season that you can find locally. They add another dimension to dishes keeping your taste palette on its toes. The best way to get your hands on these herbs is to grow your own or buy ready planted and nurture on your windowsill.

Recipes Lauren’s Dinner
Vegetable, Quinoa and Buckwheat Chilli This warming, vegetarian chilli is a quick and easy dish to throw together, and is perfectly comforting as the autumn grows colder. 1tbsp coconut oil 1 diced onion 2 crushed garlic cloves 2 chopped chillies 1 large chopped courgette 1 large broccoli crown, cut into small florets 1 sliced red pepper 1 tin of butter beans, strained 1tbsp chilli powder 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp smoked paprika 100g buckwheat 80g (red and/or white) quinoa, rinsed 2 large tomatoes 250ml vegetable stock Salt and Pepper to season Heat the oil in a large frying pan Add the onions, garlic and chilli and sauté until softened Add the spices and fry for two minutes Add the tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables and cook through for 10 minutes on a medium heat Pour in the stock and add the quinoa and buckwheat, season to taste and simmer for 25 minutes adding more liquid where necessary and stirring occasionally to prevent sticking Tips: I use coconut oil for almost everything, it’s the perfect oil to use on a high heat and it has a multitude of health benefits. If you don’t have buckwheat, substitute it for more quinoa, or even brown rice. Bulk your dish out with dark leafy greens to make it go further and boost your antioxidant levels Come home to your fragrant chilli by throwing it into your slow cooker in the morning before you go out. Fry the onions, garlic and spices for a few minutes then add all of the other ingredients to your crock pot and leave on low. Be sure to add the quinoa, buckwheat or rice until you come home, turn up to high and enjoy after 30 minutes. eden magazine 83
Recipes Haleema Shahbaz’s Healthy Baking
The Healthy Baker Words by Katie Calvert
Think truly tasty treats can’t be healthy? Baking genius Haleema shows you how this chocolate filled recipe makes for an instantly delicious snack. So guilt free you can eat 2! Chocolate Oatmeal Muffins Serves - 12 1 cup old fashioned oats (not instant) 1 cup nonfat milk 1 cup whole wheat flour 2/3 cup brown sugar 2/3 cup unsweetened applesauce 2 egg whites 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 4 -6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup dark chocolate chips Soak the oats in milk for about one hour and preheat the oven to 200 Place your bun cases in the pan. Or use silicone moulds and spray with cooking spray Combine the oat mixture with the unsweetened applesauce and egg whites, and mix until combined In a separate bowl, whisk the dry ingredients together – flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt Add the wet ingredients to the dry mix until just combined Finally, add the dark chocolate chips Spoon the mixture into the bun cases Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until done Consider decoration – place more chocolate chips on top whilst the buns are still warm, you’ll notice them sink a little; or whip up a little buttercream and add sprinkles (make the buttercream healthier by using unsalted butter, with vanilla extract and honey hinting at sweetness) Haleema’s handy tip? Cover the chocolate chips in flour to prevent them sinking to the bottom!

The healthy way to banish your cravings Words by Katie Calvert
We’re all guilty of it – sneaking into the kitchen cupboards to munch on something we think we shouldn’t. But what if our cravings are trying to tell us something? What if there’s a healthier alternative that we can enjoy guilt free and still feel satisfied?
Got to have chocolate, you need comfort Chocolate is probably every woman’s first thought when pre-menstrual. But why is this? We often display mood swings during this time of the month so your chocolate cravings could be a sign that you need a mood boost. Certain ingredients in chocolate can raise internal levels of the hormone serotonin, a contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness. Stick to a few squares of dark chocolate or a low-calorie hot chocolate drink as a healthier option.
Got to have chips, you need to slow down When you are stressed your body can stop producing the correct amounts of hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, which disrupts the balance of minerals in the body and may explain why you crave salty chips. Try leafy green vegetables and seaweed salads to satisfy mineral imbalances. As an alternative, try baking sweet potato chips. Learning to unwind properly is just as important for keeping your hormones in check.
Got to have bread, you need to balance your moods Those who cut back on carbohydrates, such as bread, are susceptible to mood swings due to carbohydrates boosting levels of serotonin, that all important feel-good hormone. Up your intake of low-burn and glycaemic-index carbs, such as lentils, wholegrain pasta, porridge, and certain fruits to try to rectify this issue. Alternatively, try breads, such as wholegrain, sourdough, spelt or rye, in moderation.
Got to have coffee, you need more energy We often consider caffeine to just be a habit or stress reliever, and for many it is. However, a sudden urge could be a sign of an iron deficiency in your body. Opt for a skinny latte and boost iron levels by eating leafy vegetables and lean red meat. Be more saintly with black or green tea, as these contain far less caffeine.
