The Value of reading your horse…
I
n my travels to develop my Horsemanship, I have noticed a common theme in what I call levels of understanding. The best hands I know place an extreme importance on being able to see what a horse is going to do before he actually does it. This is a skill that has to be developed, contrary to the fact that when you don’t have it, it seems that those that do, were born with it. They talk fluently about what they believe that they are seeing in their Horses. I’m here to tell you that no one is born with this skill. Human beings are very adaptable and when we decide that we are going to do or learn something, it will manifest in some form at a later time. Those that get be er do so because they choose to; it is just that simple.
I can remember a day in 1982. I had just tied a 3 year old mare to a fence post. I was fresh out of college and most of my experience at this time was with cows and calves. I had been around Horses for several years but they had not yet become the life study that they are now. The pen that I tied this filly to had a few loose geldings in it. I really never gave those geldings a second thought. Like usual life lessons start out from innocence combined with ignorance and I was full of both!
When those geldings saw this filly they became interested in her and started walking towards her. I still paid them no a ention but when they got about 10 feet away from her, the gentleman who owned them told me that I had be er go rescue my mare because she was ge ing ready to get the tar kicked out of her. I didn’t know what he was talking about so I probably didn’t put as much urgency into my rescue as I should have and sure enough when they got close to her the dog-gone-est kicking match took place that I had ever seen! By the way ca le don’t do stuff like that. Anyway, I was pre y amazed that this old Horseman knew long before those horses got close what was going to take place. The only difference between he and I was a huge gap of understanding. He had developed the skill of reading horses and I got one of my first lessons on it! I really believe that all of us only ever have but one problem and that would be a lack of understanding. The best part about that is that if you can stay out of the blame game and look inside yourself to find the courage and determination to search for answers to your problems that there is absolutely nothing that you can’t do. Look at the Wright Brothers or Edison or Carl Benz who invented the first car. Now in no way am I thinking that you can fix everything by simply learning to read your horse but I will say that 99 percent of the problems that you encounter with them can be understood and addressed to you and your Horse’s benefit!

The value of being able to effectively read a horse cannot be overstated. Just as learning to read a book as a child opens up a world of adventure, learning, and self-preservation ( think about the necessity of reading warning labels and instructions!), learning to read a horse opens the door to a more complete understanding of and communication with the horse. Study these two example and practice observing your own horses. The reward for honing this skill will be a deeper relationship based on understanding. You will become more effective with your horse and your horse will appreciate and respect your increased intuition. Email us for your FREE How to read a horse ebook. dennis@cappelandcappel.com

our continual development of your ability to accurately read your horse comes with numerous benefits, you will stay safer and at the same time experience more pleasure in your time that you devote to your horse. The fact that you will be seeing things sooner in the near future and you will be continually developing a more accurate picture of just how your horse is perceiving you and his environment will give you more empathy for the animal and your relationship will improve with every opportunity you have to be together. I bet you will like it best when you feel like that you are understood and accepted, too. Your horse is just like you in that regard, so give him more opportunity to be understood and he will respect and honor you for your efforts!
Forever Learning, Dennis Cappel
Obviously a horse bucking. But look at the expression on his face and see if we can learn anything. He does not appear to be mad. I think this is simply an act of self preserva(on because of having the saddle on for the very first (me. Look how straight he is in his body from his head to his tail and the eleva(on of his shoulders that come from he power of the drive from behind. These are all desirable characteris(c when they are there for us to call upon. But when they are thrust upon us in situa(ons like this there serve too benefit the horse. This horse is carrying himself nicely forward. Even though he is just walking, he is engaged behind and using his hind legs and stomach and back to li. his shoulders. The shoulders are slightly elevated and the neck is so. and his face is perpendicular to the ground indic(ng that he is going up into a so. feel. Note: he is moving with shorter strides in the front feet and longer ones with the hind. This is a picture of balance.

When to keep, sell, or send your mule to training! By Brandy Von Holten
H
ave you ever heard, “I don’t want to sell him, I don’t want him to go to a bad home, or “I have too many in the pasture, or “I haven’t ridden any of these in years. This is a sign that it is me to either make a decision to keep your horse, sell your horse, or send your horse to training! Or in other words, “You’ve got to know when hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run. When to KEEP your horse: Hands down, you keep old horses. If they have spent their en re life being there for you, it is me for you to step up and be there for them. Many people get rid of old horses because it is hard to watch them go down. Suck it up, bu5ercup. GeUng old is not for the weak. If a horse has an injury that is debilita ng, you need to keep them. You have to deal with whatever the outcome is going to be and not pass the buck. If you had a child get in an accident that debilitated them, you would keep them. Do the same with your horse. They are part of your family. The severity of the injury and your personal beliefs will dictate the need to put the horse down or to turn them out to pasture.
When to send your horse to TRAINING:
Sell– Personality differences– Greg Strange
If your horse has sat for a while, there is no reason for you to climb back into that saddle if you are unsure. Maybe your horse just needs a handful of lessons, maybe it needs a month or longer. There is no shame in having someone that trains horses for a living be the one that rides them when the horse has had a chunk of me o. If you are not able to ride for an extended amount of me and want your horse to maintain its training, this would be a great me to send them to a trainer. This could be due to a deployment, pregnancy, personal injury, or a variety of other reasons.
If you are thinking about buying a horse, before you sign that check, take them to a trainer for an evalua on. Breed S THE MINIATURE HORSE The American Miniature Horse is a unique breed - an elegant, li5le scaled-down version of the large horse that cannot be taller than 34 inches * (See registry dierences below) when measured at the last hairs of the mane. Today's perfectly propor oned Miniatures are the product of nearly 400 years of selec ve breeding, ini ally in Europe. Miniatures were ďŹ rst imported to the United States in the early 1900's as work horses to take advantage of their great strength in pulling ore carts in coal mines. As their u lity decreased with the advent of industrializa on a few far sighted individuals started to breed Miniatures as unique pets. From these beginnings came the forebears to the American Miniature Horse Associa on and the American Miniature Horse Registry which serve as registries for the American Miniature Horse. Horsemen and non-horsemen alike are a5racted to the miniature because of their small size and gentle, aec onate nature. Miniatures are the perfect horse for children, to learn how to care for and ride, years before they are ready for even the most gentle big horse. Many a saddle horse lives in the pasture only to be ridden a few mes a year by the well meaning, but other wise occupied owners. Miniatures bring all of the pleasures of horse ownership in a smaller package. *AMHA registry and the AMHR registry and their differences: AMHA American Miniature Hose Associa on - A Texas based registry which requires all of their miniature horses to measure 34" or less. AMHR American Miniature Horse Registry - An Illinois based registry has two separate height categories under their deďŹ ni on of a miniature horse: Division "A" miniature - 34" and under Division "B" miniature over 34" to 38" Both registries oer year round shows and a Na onal Compe on.

Spotlight THE AMERICAN MINIATURE HORSE STANDARD OF PERFECTION GENERAL IMPRESSION: A small, sound, well-balanced horse, possessing the correct conforma on characteris cs required of most breeds --reďŹ nement and femininity in the mare, boldness and masculinity in the stallion. Compara vely short distance between eyes and muzzle. ProďŹ le straight or slightly concave below the eyes. Large nostrils. Clean, reďŹ ned muzzle. Even bite. EARS: Medium in size. Pointed. Carried alertly, with ps curving slightly inward. THROAT-LATCH: Clean and well deďŹ ned, allowing ample exa on at the poll. NECK: Flexible, lengthy, in propor on to body and type and blending smoothly into the withers. SHOULDERS: Long, sloping and well-angulated, allowing a free swinging stride and alert head/neck carriage. Well muscled forearm. BODY: Well muscled, with ample bone and substance. Balanced and well propor oned. Short back and loins in rela on to length of underline. Smooth and generally level topline. Deep girth and ank. Trim barrel. HINDQUARTERS: Long, well-muscled hip, thigh and gaskin. Highest point of croup to be same height as withers. Tail set neither excessively high or low, but smoothly rounding at the rump. LEGS: Set straight and parallel when viewed from front or back. Straight, true and squarely set, when viewed from side with hooves poin ng directly ahead. Pasterns sloping about 45 degrees and blending smoothly, with no change of angle, from the hooves to the ground. Hooves to be round and compact, trimmed as short as prac cal for an unshod horse. RIDER FITNESS OK. Here's your chance. If you're not ďŹ nding me over the winter or don't have the luxury of an indoor riding arena and you ďŹ nd yourself doing nothing but chores (keep doing them!); or maybe just not being as ac ve over the winter with horses, now is the me to prepare for the spring riding season. Get yourself ďŹ t in order to be a be5er rider and meet some of those goals you've set for 2018. One of the ques ons I've so oZen asked the rider's I've interviewed is how do you prepare for compe on. For some it's mental and some it is a workout of speciďŹ c exercises or cardio along with riding. Maybe it's both or maybe it's just making sure to ride on a regular schedule. Staying ďŹ t to ride may be a li5le easier for those who are youthful or those who ride year-round. However, you will become a be5er rider by strengthening your core and improving your balance. Here are a few exercises that you might try. Balance - The best way to get in great shape and become a good rider is to ride. Having strong muscles is half of it, but training your brain and eyes and having balance and body control while on a moving object is also important. If you don't get this experience regularly, you will not be in the best possible shape for riding. If your winter riding is limited, ďŹ nd an indoor arena to haul to or take a few lessons at a stable with an indoor arena. Flexibility – basic stretching exercises will work for this. Cardiovascular – Running three mes a week. If running is not for you or if you can not take the impact, walk instead at least three to 5 mes a week.

Muscle - Walk up to the stairs in your home-if you don't have any, a stair stepper will do or a stepladder if you have one. Stand on the stair closest to the ground. When you stand, hold onto the railing at ďŹ rst. Now, holding the railing, balance on only the balls of your feet. Slowly stretch down and lower your heels un l you feel the stretch in your calves. Sound familiar? This is recrea ng the s rrup! Hold for ten seconds.
Core Strength - The plank is the ul mate total-body movement. Hold the "upâ€? push-up posi on, suppor ng your body weight either on your elbows (directly under your shoulders) and toes, or on the palms of your hands with arms fully extended (hands directly under your shoulders) and toes. Engage your en re body to keep your spine straight (no bend at the waist), and hold the plank for as long as you can. Slowly build up the length of me you can hold that posi on. These are just a few exercises to do. There are many more. And, a lot of people are ďŹ nding that Yoga is a great ďŹ t in a rider's program. Remember to be safe in any exercising you do. See you on the trail or in the ring! by Schellie Blochberger CHA Cer ďŹ ed Instructor APHA/AQHA Professional Horseman OHSA Judge
