Clear mental picture Why should you and how do you use a clear mental picture? For me this is the best tool to have in every situation. A definite mental image tells me when to and when not to. When you are traveling there are two things you must know, your current location and your desired destination. You must also know when you are leaving and when you are arriving. The arrival time has to allow for stops, speed limits and traffic delays etc. When you a#ach arrival times to your end destination you are well on your way to enjoying your trip. Since you know when you are leaving you can pack ahead of time and when you put some thought into where you might stop along the way and you have checked the weather conditions for this journey you are prepared and can expect to have a good experience with this it!
WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM © 2015
Departure time has now arrived! It is comforting to have prepared in advance. You now walk to your vehicle. Feel the door handle as you open the door, you step into the truck that is full of fuel and has everything you will need for the trip! Feel the seat and the brake pedal, the steering wheel, the gas pedal! Now that you are fully aware of your surroundings you look out through the windshield and because you can see the road you now guide your vehicle effortlessly down the road and you are in motion toward your destination. Your destination will become a stabilizer for you so that if you go off course at any time on the journey you can correct it immediately and get right back on track! The time of your arrival will also keep you from wasting valuable time; it works as a continuing encourager to keep you moving forward. At last your prior preparation has you at your destination a bit early and now you can unload in a relaxed a#itude and enjoy your time!!

The trip that I just painted for you in your mind is exactly how I ride my horses! I use a clear mental picture of what I want my horse to look like and what I want them to do. This tells me when to do and what to do, to help them to see my picture . This image for me includes but is not limited to posture, a#itude and movement as desired. When my horses see my picture, they experience the peace that comes by eortlessly yielding to my suggestions as I guide them on the journey!

About our cover! This is Alexis Hansen (aka LuLu) Photo by: Creative Photography by Kim Hansen
It is every little girls dream to own her very own horse and Alexis or LuLu as she is commonly called by myself and our horse friends, had that dream too. While we own several horses, none of them were candidates to become LuLu's personal riding companion. So before we began to venture on the path of finding her own personal riding companion, she was told that she first had to show that her desire to ride was be greater than any fear and that her fear would only disappear thru her ability to control a horse and all of this would happen when she could reach down deep in herself and find the strength and courage to "cowgirl up" and show that horse who is boss. Needless to say, this photograph captured LuLu showing this horse, Tip, who was boss and shortly after this day, she became a very happy and proud owner of her very own horse named GG.
LuLu continues to learn and build confidence and she knows that with patience, persistence, training and desire, she will have the ability to control her horse and her dreams of their future together.
About the Contest! In January we ran a cover contest through our Facebook page. We were on the search for your best horse show photos! What an overwhelming response we had!!! There were over 16,000 hits on the contest, and 75 wonderful photos were entered! The top entries were neck and neck on the close of the contest. So close that it was hard to call! (votes were still coming in through out the night of close!) We decided to award the top three photos with three separate magazine covers! Please follow us on Facebook for the next cover contest coming soon!!! Thank you to all that entered!

HERBS FOR HORSES Wri en by Maureen Keller, Practitioner/Certified Equine Iridologist Edited by Tina Hurt
At Tranquil Companion I employ many different integrative, non-invasive therapies and remedies. Many include the use of herbal remedies. Herbs are a natural way of enabling horses to heal themselves. For example, in the spring your horse may consume dandelions, which are usually abundant in most pastures. Because of their diuretic qualities, dandelions cleanse the liver and kidneys by flushing and toning them. This is good to do in the spring because of the normal congestion and toxins that accumulate through the winter months. Dandelions also are a very good source of calcium, copper, fluorine, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and sulfur. Optimum amounts of all of these nutrients can be obtained in the horse by consuming as li#le as two or three plants daily. Dandelion is also an excellent blood purifier and is good for balancing the spleen, pancreas, and liver, as well as for stimulating the appetite and improving digestion. Plantain, another plant found in pastures, is classified as an invasive weed. It grows everywhere, including in peopleʹs driveways, but this plant has
WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM © 2015
great healing properties as an antiseptic, astringent, and as an expectorant to name a few. Plantain benefits the kidneys, intestines, and skin. This plant is high in iron and is powerful in fighting infection and blood poisoning. When mixed with slippery elm, marshmallow or comfrey it can be made into a very powerful poultice for draining out infection. It can be used internally and externally at the same time to fight an infected wound. I have used a plantain and slippery elm poultice on a horse client that had a very large abscess on his neck. Following is the recipe I used. Combine equal parts of slippery elm powder and dried plantain. Add enough hot water to make a paste. Add 2 teaspoons of olive oil or vegetable oil. Put on the infection or abscess and cover completely with sterile gauze and wrap with plastic cling-wrap. If the area is large, tie off with nylon pantyhose to hold the dressing in place. Leave on for 24 hours. Clean the affected area thoroughly. Use caution when removing any of the infected material, and always wash your hands after. If you find the infection isnʹt completely gone, repeat this process for another 24 hours after cleaning the area thoroughly.

Herbs with antibiotic properties were blended for additional support when treating this animal client. They were chaparral, echinacea, garlic, and horsetail. I offered the infected horse this mixture and he ate about half the batch the first day and a quarter of the batch the second day. With the use of both the above poultice and the additional herbal mixture, his infection healed nicely. Horses in the wild graze for miles a day eating a wild plant here, another there. Horses seem to know which herbs to eat if available and when. Unfortunately most horse pastures do not contain many of the wild plants and herbs needed to provide the horse with the necessary nutrients and minerals for optimum health. With our help we can make available what herbs are needed to enable horses to heal themselves. Maureen Keller is a Healing Touch for Animals
practitioner and equine iridologist. The healing modalities and remedies used are not meant to replace regular veterinary care. The healing protocols can be used as a standalone or in conjunction with a veterinary program. At Tranquil Companion we make custom herbal blends, tinctures, and poultices for animal clients. horseback ride in one of St Louis’s many beautiful parks is fun and enjoyable until something goes wrong! Unforeseen circumstances like sudden weather changes, trail wash outs, an injury, falling off and losing your horse and even your horse spooking and running with you for a few miles from your intended trail do happen. Preparing for these evens take a little planning, skill and a “go kit” that includes the tools you will need. We’ll use Hidden Acres Homesteads large acreage & trails to learn to prepare for losing your trail and finding yourself on-the-grid without cell phone service; even to be able to handle the unexpected overnight out in nature! Go Kits are included! The evening will include a camp out with tents and cooking with cast iron over the campfire! Hi, my name is Savannah. I live in Holts Summit, Missouri. I'm in the 5th grade and my horses' name is Boomer. (Page Can Too) He is an American Paint Horse. I like horses because even though they are big, they are gentle and sweet. I like Boomer because he challenges me to be a better rider. Also, he loves being groomed and adores it when you groom his face. HELPFUL HINTS Practice using your 4 natural aids (voice, hands, seat and legs) and your eyes, to get your horse to be more responsive to what you're asking him to do. Such as weaving in and out of cones. Set up a line of 4 cones, spaced about 6 to 8 feet apart. Begin on the right side of the first cone. Assuming that your horse moves forward willingly you can guide him to the left, in between the first and second cone by pressing your right leg against him and moving your rein hand to the left. Here you are using your leg pressure and your hand to ask him to go left. As you move forward in between the second and third cone, you will press your left leg against him as you move your rein hand right to guide him. If he hesitates to walk forward remember to give a little “cluck” with your voice and press with both legs. Continue alternating your leg cues as you move through the rest of the cones and repeat. Always keep your eyes looking up and ahead to where you will guide your horse next.
