From his famous photo of John John Kennedy at his father’s funeral (1962) to his portraits of Bob Dylan and Muhammad Ali for Life magazine, Mr. Shearer’s photos have given us a rich visual backdrop of American life for the past 4 decades. We are thrilled that Mr. Shearer will be teaching two classes at KAC this spring....see page29.

with Dr. Jill Kiefer Art as Illusion—Illusion as Art ! “Illusion” is typically described as something that deceives us by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. But what is reality? Isn’t it shaped by our perceptions? A rainbow is an optical illusion. It doesn’t have an actual endpoint. Does that mean it isn’t real? Throughout time, art has both reflected and helped to define cultures, ideas, beliefs—all of which are our realities. A two-dimensional painting can evoke a three-dimensional appearance—and feeling. Simple lines can create depth and distance. The ability to manipulate impressions, emotions and perceptions successfully (and for a sustained period) can also be considered an art. Illusions have been known to elicit feelings of joy, sadness, anger and a host of other responses—just as much as other art styles. In this program, we’ll explore “art as illusion” and “illusion as art” from tangible and abstract perspectives—to see how they’ve been articulated over time. Join us to discover the surprising ways in which illusion and reality converge in the arts. Wed, April 20 1-3pm $20 Dr. Jill Kiefer 1wk

This program will focus on Assemblage, Collage, Alternative Media, and other types of art that make use of found objects, and non-art materials. How (and why) does one turn a toilet into a work of art? How does a piece of garbage become a masterwork? How does “stuff” inspire artists? We’ll be looking at a variety of works in this program to illustrate how much of what is ‘art’ relies on the vision and creativity of the artist. The artists we’ll be looking at include Jean Arp, Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Cornell, Marcel Duchamp and Louise Nevelson—among others. Wed, June 22 1-3pm $20 Dr. Jill Kiefer 1wk

Jackson Pollock—An Artistic Evolution Jackson Pollock was an American painter who was a leading exponent of Abstract Expressionism, an art movement characterized by the free-associative gestures in paint sometimes referred to as “action painting.” During his lifetime he received widespread publicity and serious recognition for the radical poured, or “drip,” technique he used to create his major works. Among his contemporaries, he was respected for his deeply personal and totally uncompromising commitment to the art of painting. His work and example had an enormous influence on them and on many subsequent art movements in the United States. He is also one of the first American painters to be recognized during (and after) his lifetime as a peer of 20th-century European masters of modern art. Join us to learn about this fascinating artist and intellectual. Wed, May 4 1-3pm $20 Dr. Jill Kiefer 1wk

Henri Rousseau—Art of the Fantastic Henri Rousseau was a French painter who is considered the archetype of the modern naïve artist. He is known for his richly colored and meticulously detailed pictures of lush jungles, wild beasts, and exotic figures—known as the Art of the Fantastic—which also include his delightful portraits and genre scenes. In addition to inspiring (unwittingly) an interest in naïve art in the 20th century, Rousseau also influenced the dreamscapes of the Surrealists. Join us to find out how this rather stodgy bureaucrat charmed the public—and the art world! Wed, May 25 1-3pm $20 Dr. Jill Kiefer 1wk

Create a Family Monogram The monogram began as a royal signature or seal on currency, which marked the reign of a particular Roman or Greek Ruler. In the Middle Ages, artisans began to use their monogram initials to personalize their work. In the Victorian era, monograms started as a symbol of aristocracy but soon became standard for every household. What began as a form of identification evolved into a great branding tool for one’s personal or family identity. In this class we will create our own family or personal Monogram. Young Children’s Classes

Stories & Art (ages 3-4)

Expressive Kids Program

Spring:

Our new Expressive Kids program is designed to stimulate visual, intuitive thinking through process oriented art rather than product oriented art. What does process oriented art mean? • No cookie cutter projects, EVER! • Providing children with HUGE sheets of paper • Painting with mediums other than paint • Using tools other than brushes • Creating art that doesn’t have to be perfect • Getting really, really messy • Never asking “what is it?” • Not worrying about getting paint on the walls, floor, ceiling, etc.! • Encouraging imagination! • Providing diverse visual and tactile experiences • Building fine motor skills • Encouraging creative thinking and experimentation • Entirely child driven

Tue 9:30 - 10:15am Thu 9:30 - 10:15am

Expressive Twos

Therapeutic, expressive, and fun, clay is one of our planet’s richest gifts. In KAC’s clay studio, children will learn about the properties of this wonderful medium while making a variety of projects. Students will learn to hand-build and will also get to experience working on a pottery wheel.

In this fun, creative class we will read a children’s story in our storytime corner and then do a project based on the stories illustrations.
