Toadstools

Toadstools are a part of woodlands that everybody recognises so I would like to make it a key feature in my project.

I have focused on the shape of toadstools after drawing them to create my own toadstool stalls. I have created a window for sales and it also is quite roomy in the inside to hold storage and stock which is quite convenient for the sellers within the stalls. However, it does not fit the geometric theme and it may look out of place due to the geometric theme everywhere else.

Nature into model 3:

Canopy's can have stalls in. Above them could be a roof top café if stairs is added.

Furniture could be yellow and green, ivy could hang and have many fresh plants for decoration, toadstools tables could also work with the theme and help the stalls on the lower levels to blend in too. I would like a rooftop café so furniture is an efficient way to introduce this theme of the Woodlands. However I would like it look quite classy therefore I may have to rethink the Toadstool idea as it could look cheap and tacky.

Café Mood Board:

Here I have made a mood board as for what mood I’d like my café to have. Id like it to be quite cosy and welcoming so soft colours should be used.. I want to include the woodland theme so oak wood and warmer colours should be used and combined together. I also like the use of plants to decorate the area as it makes the room seem very free spacious. My café will not be huge so I need it to feel spacious like these do.

Café Mood Board Ideas for Material And Colour

Schemes:

Home Cafe Wuqing, Tianjin,

China

After exploring the theme of geometry and discovering the themes and feelings id like my café to have, I started researching cafes. This café inspired me as I love the privacy the plants give. Not only is it extremely geometric, it is also organic as it has plants surrounding the café and they provide privacy

people as shown with the sofa behind the boxes. Having private areas within my café would be a great idea as it will attract customers as it allows them to feel free and relax before or after they go shopping. I like the oak wood and the minimal colours. The colour comes from the plants which is a interesting idea. I would add some cushions with colour and small touches of colour elsewhere but I will definitely use the plants as a main source of colour.

Main street café, Melbourne

I have explored this café in Melbourne as it has a strong link to my theme. It has a has geometric shapes everywhere including the floor and uses darker colours to form a modern look. It also uses plants to add colour. I would add some colour elsewhere to make it look more cosy but the layout is extremely practical. I like that the counter is close to the seats making the space more welcoming and easier for staff who work there.

Geometric shapes

Models Inspired from drawings:

In this experiment I created a tall building with a conjoining building for this market. It is very tall so may not fit into the area of Rainham.

In this model I randomly placed some blocks to explore what forms would be created. I liked this model as it is all interconnected even though it is segmented.

Model 1: Model 2:

More models

Model 3: This model is of 2 separate buildings which would be used as one however I do not like how divided and separated it is.

but its levels ae all different shaped, sized and angled which could leave lots of empty space and make it awkward for a market to flow.

Model 4: This model is of one building

This model is my favourite model out of the ones I have created. I like that it is one building that is divided up into sections as it will keep some movement and flow in the market. I like that it has multiple levels so each section can have different themes and stalls increasing choice for the public. Through my drawing I showed the walkway system with arrows. I removed a few blocks as they was unnecessary for my design. I have drawn where stairs will be and I have shown where they will lead to. There will be a large space for a potential café and toilets downstairs which are easily accessible and a walkthrough of stalls upstairs. It looks like a ship which is quite fitting as the Thames is very close to Rainham.

Model 5 Development

Here, I have drawn over my model to show where windows and doors will be placed . I have placed a door at the front of the building so the entrance is clear. There will be a one way system and you will follow up the stairs. You will enter in the centre and also exit that way. Having two floors will segregate each market section. I will have a food and drink section and potentially a kitchen/cooking section too. I will also have a restaurant and maybe an area to teach you recipes on how to make dinners with the food you can purchase.

Model 5 digital drawings:

Here I have drawn my buildings digitally. This way I can see the shapes clearly due to the walls being transparent. The lines are also overlapping which could inspire decorations and furniture ideas for the interior. I have also added red lined for where panes of glass, doors, and stairs could be

ikea-the one way system:

After coming up with a potential design for an exterior for my market, I wanted to consider the interior and how that can impact my exterior. Ikea is famous for its one way system however it is never crowded which is what I want to achieve. It is very opened planned with high ceilings so I need to make my ceiling higher in my building. For the layour I also will need to have a main walkway with little paths coming off of it which is what distributes the people and stops the crowding on the walkways.

Ikea and the one way system:

Here I did some digital drawings of the space in Ikea. I mad the diagrams transparent so the floor space would easily be seen and understood. I highlighted the floor space in orange to clearly see the walkways. The walk ways seem to consist of one main pathway with lots of little side paths to follow but it will still lead you to the main corridor. This will remove a lot of crowding and it will keep the movement of the stop running smoothly. Although my building will not be a furniture store like idea is, I will have my stalls scattered to have one main walkway many little paths leading off of it helping the one way system be installed.

Model 5 adaptions:

After exploring Ikeas layout, I have created another version of model 5 which has been adapted. I used a different material as well to allow me explore shapes. I used card as it is flexible. The lower level remains the same which can have the one way system, and the stairs will take you to the upper floor where you can roam each little building. It has less layers than the original model for the convivence of the customers.

model 5 drawings:

I further explored my new model by drawing it in its most basic shape. I have added a wall to the front as rain could damage the interior and the cold could stop people from visiting in winter. I will add doors and a floorplan. I need to explore different shapes that could form from these boxes to make it more visually interesting.

floorspace

After remaking my model 5, I wanted to explore the new available floor space. All the spaces connect and each room leads to another which will help in flow like ikea does.

Perspectives:

Here I have explored my model in a hollow form. I can see the height width and length of each wall clearly putting the floorspace in proportion to the walls.

The elevation views show the shapes in it simplest form. It is still representing the boat shape which I initially intended.

Elevation views:

Dragonfly building

After looking at the floor space I wanted to adapt the outside of my building to have more shape than just squares. I have looked a box shaped house and how it has been designed to have different layers depths and shapes within the exterior. I drew perspective drawings to understand its shape. I also explored adaptions and the state of my current model to understand how change could be made from the inspiration of this building.

Hudson valley residence

I also looked at this building which is similar to the previous one. I like that it has many layers and different windows giving it character. I will incorporate this into my building design.

New model idea:

After looking at my model 5, I realised it was quite chunky and it wasn’t very aesthetically pleasing. Therefore I looked at two houses that have two layers and are made of interesting materials. I really liked the Hudson Valley Residence as it had 2 layers, was quite geometric yet it was quite soft to look at. I liked how open it was due to the windows so I wanted to put this into my model. I wanted a more even roof so I created a hut looking shape roof.

Adaptions:

After researching the Hudson Valley Residence and coming up with a new model idea which I have demonstrated below, I have adapted my original model again. This adaption to Model 5 has similar window frames and exterior layout. I also thought about how the one way system would work so I added a fence for safety and a set of stairs which has doors either side so movement is easy.

Traditional market style adaptions:

Although I liked the design of my adapted building. It lacked traditional market features so I added tensile structures to make the building look more like a market. I was inspired from market tents. I adapted the front two buildings into tent looking structures to resemble the market theme. It also allows customers to walk around the roof in the open air dependant on weather.

Tensile structure experiment 1

Tensile structure experiment 2

I made 2 tensile structures to inspire my canopy on the second floor of my building. I have drawn a tent shape structure where the tensile structure will be placed. I like the stretch and shape of model 2 however I like model 1 the most due to its convenience with protection from rain as well as its simplistic shape which would blend well with the rest of the model.

Colours mood board

Sketch up model

Here I have made my model on sketch up. I have created the tensile structure on the upstairs of the model which was inspired from the first tensile structure model I made with the fabric. I kept the shapes the exact same however I changed the positioning to suit my model.

I created a canopy to cover the stairs and protect them from rain so water does not leak into the inside of the building. The stairs lead to a door inside, one side is for entry and the other is for exit and will be clearly sign posted so people understand the one way system.

I have made the interior navy blue and grey to be bold yet blend in with some of the other modern buildings in Rainham. This shaped model was inspired from a boat shape due to it being located near the Thames so the blue is to represent the water.

Interior of the model

Here I have shown the upstairs of my model and its interior. I have created box shaped huts to represent market stalls. I have also placed fences to make it clear how the one way system works.

I have also placed stairs in the centre of the downstairs area so the stalls can be placed surrounding it. It also makes it very clear and obvious that there is more to explore.

I kept to the exteriors colour scheme to help it blend in and give the boat like feel.

Elevation sketch views

Here I have transformed my sketch up drawing into an elevation view. I have looked from side, back and front views. Here we can clearly see the height differences and each walls depth and length. This enables me to understand my buildings structure further. I used the sketchy edges to understand the buildings shape in its most basic form.

Wireframe and sketch perspective views:

To the left I have more sketchy edges style drawings in a perspective view to understand the shape of the building. To the right I have used a similar style however this one is hollow so the interior can be seen from every angle. This puts the interior in perspective o its exterior.

Adding further inspiration to my model from the Hudson Valley residence

After reflecting on my sketch up mode, I felt the base of the building was too basic and did not replicate my research. Therefore I focused on the shapes and over hang of the building which I could add to my building. I did quick sketches to present my new idea.

After considering my sketch ideas, I wanted to focus on the new base. I have clearly shown its new shape in the drawings to the left. I have added more space by reorganising this base, and therefore can tuck the stairs into one of the new areas to allow for more space in the centre of the building. I then added a similar design to my last building above the base. I added a raise towards the end, and I have also added a canopy over the end to represent the Hudson valley Residence. I will however keep to the same colour scheme as the last building.

Final ideas:

I have changed the layout slightly to fit the space easily. I created large glass doors to welcome customers into the building. I have extended the cover over the outside door limiting the amount of rain or sunlight shining over those walking from the canopy to the inside of the building. I also changed the fence going around the top of the building. The fence was quite unattractive therefore I changed it to a barrier for the safety of those on the rooftop. I also added a canopy over the outside entrance of the stairs to protect rain from coming inside the building.

Perspective view final model

Elevation views of final model

I have created my final model on sketch up. I have previously created perspective views and here I have created elevation views. This layout is similar to my researched buildings and allows for more space so it is less cramped. It also allows for a convenient location for the staircase as the previous model was in the way of the market place itself. The windows are inviting to outsiders making it attractive.

Interior of final model:

I have created a very basic interior layout design. As you walk in, you are directly in the market. On the right is a toilet for men and women, and a door to a set of stairs. The back of the bottom floor has a large space for cooking. There could be demonstrations on how to cook the food people may have bought in the market and taste testers to try and convince those to buy more products. I have kept to the exteriors colours, to not only blend in but so the colours of the products in the stalls will stand out. The stairs have their own section and a direct entrance from outside for those who only want to go to the upper section. This section is a café with a balcony style seating area.
