Greetings, my brothers and sisters in Christ! Although the celebrations of Christmas and New Year’s have passed, we are a nation of observances. Now we look forward to St. Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and most importantly, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The Holy Days are upon us, a time of deep spiritual reflection. Christians around the world will honor the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior on March 31st—a sacrifice like no other. Only through His suffering and death do we become new creations in Jesus Christ. Some will participate in special Sunday services, egg hunts and the stuffing of Easter baskets. Many faith communities follow the liturgical Lenten traditions, including New Creation Lutheran Church. Enjoy our Pastor Profile with Dr. Dale Olson as he shares the exciting growth of this brand new congregation. All are invited to the Grand Opening, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and other Lenten gatherings. For those seeking a new church home, this joyous church planting takes place in Fulshear. Speaking of “planting,” springtime is just around the corner! With this in mind, we profile Eric Ford, a Christian business owner who owns and operates Superior Lawn and Landscaping. Ford notes that we never know what weather will affect us this time of year: rain, freezing temperatures or increasingly hot sunshine. One thing is for certain: Katyites look forward to a transition into blossoming beauty and more outdoor activity. I want to mention a special endeavor by some very talented Katy students, inspired by the book Live for Today. When author Joe Barfield turned his novel into a screenplay, the subject matter touched the hearts of some local teens. This redemption story deals with bullying and the road to suicide… and how hope and faith can change lives. Though many said it couldn’t be done, a talented young cast of actors and crew collaborated to shoot a full-length faith-based feature film. We are excited to share this amazing, nearly unheard of feat. All this and much more fills the pages of our February/March 2013 issue. Let’s support one another as we head into a promising new season. Let’s pray unceasingly for our community and nation, and may our Christian families and Christian businesses be richly blessed.

May You Be Richly Blessed, Joseph R. Menslage

Live For Today: Katy Students Make a Feature Length Motion Picture By Ruth Towns Author Joe Barfield was at a friend’s house talking about his book Live For Today, and the script—a screenplay. It just so happened several teenagers were present and wanted to read it. “Next thing I know, these kids scheduled meetings with their teachers and principals because they want to make it into a movie,” says Barfield. Professionals told him it was impossible. “Such a feat can’t be accomplished,” they warned. “Wait until they are ready. Teenagers simply can’t make a movie.” They were wrong. Barfield believed in the students and their dream, as did Kristin McKenzie of Faith West. After all, students today are computer savvy and extremely IT literate. “We put an ad in The Katy Times for auditions and movie making. 80 local teens showed up from public and private schools,” says Barfield. K-T Films and Vague Studios filmed the movie with one camera—a Cannon 7D that cost a little more than $2,000. Empowered Students

Ricardo Casco, a local 17-year-old student who is now a senior, filmed the entire project. Jacob Berardi, a 22-years-old college grad, did the editing and created the trailer. He’s been making films with friends since he was young, went to school for filmmaking, and wanted to work on a small independent film with a truly great story behind it. “Amazingly, they used simple home computers,” said Barfield. Yet anyone who watched the trailer will be amazed. It looks like a studio film with excellent acting. The commitment of the students shines through. “Live For Today has finished filming, but there is still work to be done. The time-intensive job of editing sound and film must be tackled before a feature length faith-based film can debut at independent film festivals. Yet thanks to high school students from Katy and the tremendous help from Faith West Academy, The Apostolic Revival Center and Cypress Christian High School, the film will be released. A huge push for funding is underway, as the cast and crew ask the community to spread the word. and the love of a girl be enough to save him? Starring: Denver Danyla, Kristin McKenzie, Lexi Midmay, Miguel Mora, and Brian Matthew Carr Directors: Del Flores and Travis Ammons Screenplay by: Joe Barfield Produced by: Darrell Supercinski, Lucia Barfield, Carla Earhart, Brian Carr, and Eric Foty

Barfield. “Many preach the evils of Hollywood and the movies being produced. How great it would be to see them stand behind our faithbased movie that follows along the lines of Facing the Giant?” Barfield speaks of the irony we see in society. “There is one strange thing I would like to mention. It seems that for weeks the number “One” bestseller on the New York Times Bestseller List is filled with pornography and erotica,” observes Barfield. “Wouldn’t it be nice if word got out and our local churches turned this faith-based novel into a number one bestseller? Certainly, it would prove that people actually read other things.” Be a Part of the Movement The ebook can be downloaded from Smashwords to all e-Reader formats, and even to home computers, at a fraction of the cost of a printed book. Visit www.smashwords.com/extreader/read/238121/1/ live-for-today to purchase a copy. $2 of every sale goes toward funding the movie. Thanks to Richard Deupree, Live For Today is also available in print locally at Katy Budget Books. Contact Joe Barfield at joebarfield@gmail.com for ways to get involved and support the film. “We are in need of funding to finish our project,” says Barfield. Katy Christian Magazine endorses this film and encourages readers to rally. A heartfelt statement from the cast sums it up perfectly: “Experience to make the film is limited, but where there is desire and dedication, anything is possible. All of us are determined to turn this story into a full-length film for people of all ages. This is for all teenagers following their dreams.” Visit the Facebook page and become a fan: www. facebook.com/pages/Live-For-Today/182364011823789.

Real Issues Live For Today addresses the very real issues of bullying and suicide, embedded with a positive theme of hope and faith. Both the novel and the movie share a teen coming of age story: an overwhelming family tragedy forces a young teen to face his demons and thoughts of suicide. The bully is flawed, human, but also has feelings like anyone else. “We see this so many times in society today,” says Barfield, who gives voice to subject matter that can literally change hearts. Impacting Lives “I actually know that the story made one student rethink suicide,” says Barfield. “Did it save him? I don’t know, but he is still working hard. One student admitted himself into rehab for drug use. Did the movie help him? Maybe. Did it help someone we don’t even know about?” This is a story about losing faith and regaining it, a story about love and hope, for without faith there is no hope, and without hope there is no tomorrow. “With faith anything is possible”— Kristin McKenzie came up with the line. A Faith-Based Alternative Barfield hopes the student movie makers and actors will be invited to address their congregations about this unusual and important Christian project, and also show the trailer they have filmed and edited. “I believe the local churches and this project are a natural mix,” says February / March 2013

Politics and Religion: State of the Nation – A True Summary By Mark Williamson Federal Intercessors By the time you read this, President Obama will have given his version of the “State of the Union.” Here is a more accurate assessment: Since the election, President Obama has “come out of the closet” as the radical, liberal socialist many of us knew he was. Not constrained by facing the voters again, and emboldened by the completely shameless “pass” he got from the press who were sold out to him and his re-election, he seems all the more inspired to implement his radical socialist/abortionist/environmentalist-wacko/anti-Israel/pro-Muslim/anti-God/anti-constitution agenda. A few (of many) examples are: • Obamacare and it’s unconstitutional and grossly immoral requirements that Christians violate their conscious and submit their businesses to provide for all kinds of contraception – from condoms, to morning-after pills, to abortion. An absolute assault on the freedom of religion! • More abortion on demand at more and more taxpayer expense. • Homosexual marriage. • Ignoring his gun-running Department of Justice while whining about the need to disarm law-abiding citizens. Another attempted attack on the right to bear arms, which the Second Amendment specifically states, “… shall not be infringed.” • An economy is on the “brink” that continues to “shrink.” • Trillions in debt – and his answer is to borrow and spend more money. • Foreign policy failure and/or designed chaos worldwide, with

the Middle East in turmoil with a perfect storm coming on the horizon, and the “Muslim Brotherhood” showing their true colors, especially in Egypt. • More defacto “open borders” sentiment that violates any sense of national security responsibility (violent drug running and potential Middle Eastern smugglers with dirty bombs) even more than the issue of lawless immigration. • His increasingly “cold shoulder” to Israel. • “Social” Jihad, including “CScope” here in Texas, though not in Katy – at least not yet, thank God! (see www.txcscopereview.com/) • Sharia law marching forward throughout America. On so many dangerous levels, in so many seemingly creative ways, the man is displaying his contempt for our constitution, integrity, character, and common sense as a nation and culture. Our constitution is increasingly viewed by some as out-of-date with more calls to scrap or re-write it. God and Jesus have become objects of mocking humor. Serious Christians are ridiculed as backward. Insane! As Obama acts as Pied Piper, leading the march of America into more and more destruction – morally, spiritually, and economically (they are all tied together) – we as Christians do not have to participate. Not that we won’t be impacted in some ways in this process, but we can remain faithful to the Lord, and trust Him for our salvation and deliverance on every level. Returning to the Lord and His ways should be a rallying call and way of life for all who believe. Daniel 7:25 speaks to the end times, and prophesies that the enemy will change “times and laws” (which we see in the aforementioned degradation of our laws and standards), but also speaks to how he will “wear out” the saints. One way he is doing it involves depleted foodsm causing slow-process malnutrition, generation to generation. Most don’t know it, so I want to bring some light to the issue for your own preservation and health. I wrote a column a while back dealing with glyconutrients and the Biblical prophecy that in the last

days, the nations would be deceived by “pharmakeia.” This encompasses our food production and “nutrition science” as well. We are becoming fat and diseased as a nation, because we, even as Christians, eat what the world eats. We disregard the order of God and His creation. 200 years ago average sugar consumption was a few pounds per year. Now, it runs something like 128 pounds per year! Our soils are depleted and we “green-harvest” everything (including organic). The genius of God and His creation regarding food and its healing and nutritional value are disregarded if not despised by Christians who shudder at the thought of eating like most societies have for hundreds, even thousands of years. Example: raw milk. The government has deceived you (sound familiar) with the idea that raw milk is dangerous and unnatural. Never mind that pasteurization kills the friendly “probiotic” bacteria, natural enzymes, and de-natures the proteins. Grass-fed beef has more Omega 3 fatty acids/oils than salmon! Grain-fed beef in grocery stores is high in Omega 6 (the type of oils Americans ingest in vast, unhealthy excess). But it’s much worse than that! A whole new perspective on the strategy of the “spirit of anti-Christ” is how our foods are being systematically perverted and even destroyed. Monsanto is a company who I’m sure employs many fine people working, but they are deceived (at best). This company is all about genetically-modified foods. 85% of all corn grown in America is genetically modified. I believe this is one of many “cancer bombs” going off in a frightening way. Corn syrup is seemingly in almost every product in the grocery store. It is considered by many to be an “anti-nutrient.” Most of it comes from genetically engineered corn, and has within it unsafe mercury

levels and Bt toxin. The Bt toxin is found in 93% of pregnant women, and in 80% of the umbilical cords of tested babies. The scripture says the enemy will tire-out the saints in the last days. I always thought this was just activity and hard work trying to fight off his assaults, but if he can rob the saints (and everyone else) of strength, endurance, energy, and clear, reasoning minds by destroying their foods, on a global scale, little by little, why wouldn’t he? If you look, you can see the manifestation of it everywhere. The “opening” for Pharmakia is much more necessary with the degradation of our nutrition. It’s a 1 – 2 punch! I encourage you to begin to do your own research. There is a lot out there on the web if you just take the time to look. For starters, check out the Weston A. Price Foundation. Check out raw milk and sources for it. Check out fermented cod liver oil, coconut oil, and the need for healthy fats for your body. Look for processes to re-mineralize teeth, and check out bone broth. And research genetically modified foods and the legal battles going on under the radar screen, as well as the health risks. You will be amazed at what you will find. Dear Doctor: Addressing Pre-Diabetes By Dr. Behrooz Saffari UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch Just when you think the holidays are over, these late winter months still bring temptations to over-indulge, especially the sugary treats of Valentine’s Day and the goodies found in Easter baskets. This article addresses pre-diabetes and some preventative measures. Dear Doctor: I have been told that I am a pre-diabetic patient. What does that mean? Dear Reader: Pre-diabetes is a condition that indicates an early impairment of carbohydrates or sugar tolerance. In other words, the patient cannot properly process dietary carbohydrates or sugars. This condition is usually a precursor for diabetes. In most cases, the patient is asymptomatic and does not suffer from any particular concerns. Pre-diabetes is usually diagnosed through a routine fasting blood work. Most patients with this condition tend to be overweight or obese. The initial treatment plan for patients with pre-diabetes usually consists of a course of conservative management by encouraging low

sugar, low fat diet, aerobic exercises and weight loss. In the following few months, the patient’s blood sugars are checked and monitored closely to make sure that patient does not develop diabetes. Annual eye exams, preventive care and regular follow up visits are recommended for these patients. Dr. Behrooz Saffari is a Family Medicine Physician for the UT Health Science Center at Houston and provides patient care at UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. To schedule an appointment, please call 713-486-5300.

Want to Serve God? By Josh Gibb Dallas Theological Seminary Most Christians have a desire to serve God. No doubt many New Year’s resolutions include a desire to better serve God. Likewise, most church mission statements contain some kind of language about serving God. Our churches and parachurch organizations provide many wonderful opportunities to serve inside and outside. Serving God is something evangelicals do quite well. But as with anything that has become commonplace within our religion, we must occasionally pause to evaluate and define our thoughts and practices. What does Jesus have to say about serving? Do our notions align with his? This short article explores the idea that serving God means first and foremost following Jesus in his suffering and death. Let me explain. The first eleven chapters of John’s gospel trace the public ministry of Jesus as he performs seven major signs (miracles), from turning water into wine (2:1-11) to the raising of Lazarus from the dead (11:3844). Although He had hinted at his Passion earlier in his ministry (2:4; 7:6), it isn’t until John 12 that Jesus really focuses in on his im-

Jesus gives this command to his disciples: “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also.” (12:26, ESV). But where was Jesus going in the context of John 12? Where were his disciples to follow Him? Jesus was on his way to the Cross. The hour of his Passion had arrived (12:23). As early as the next chapter he foretells that Peter, one of his closest disciples, will deny and abandon him (13:38). Peter did deny his Savior a little later in the narrative, but we learn from Scripture

(21:19) and from other sources that many of Jesus’ earliest disciples (including Peter!) eventually suffered and died as martyrs. Many in the history of the church have also served their Lord in this way. We ourselves may one day tread this path. Though it’s impossible to know for certain if we’re destined for martyrdom, even in our living, death to self is the mandate. Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Lk. 9:23, emphasis added). We may not die as martyrs, but Jesus still demands we lay down our lives and follow him. Setting aside all else in unqualified commitment to Him is our duty as believers. With Paul we should be able to say, “I die every day!” (1 Cor. 15:31).

Christ took the role of a servant during his time on earth, coming to serve, not to be served (Mk. 10:45). We’re to thus take our cues about servanthood from the ultimate Servant, the eternal Son of God, who humbled himself by taking on flesh and dying on a cross.

March 17 - First Communion Instruction 11:15 a.m.

We fail in our attempts to serve God when it becomes simply a routine or because it makes us feel good. Service to God is following Jesus in a servant’s role. Service is a mindset. It’s an attitude. When we put others’ needs above our own, when we sacrificially give of our resources, time, etc., when we deny and put ourselves at risk for the sake of the gospel, then we will be faithful in our service to the One who is continually beckoning, “Follow me.”

Local Christian Student Highlights Jessica Parks

Classification: Senior Faith West Academy Somewhere between sounds and rhythm created by singers Amy Lee of Evanescence and Colbie Caillat could characterize the mellifluous music of singer/songwriter Jessica Parks of Faith West Academy. Jessica has filled three composition books (about 42 pages each) of music that she has written. “I started writing lyrics when I was in the third grade,” she said of her work. “In the fifth grade I learned the guitar, so I started composing music to go with my lyrics.” Not being formally trained, Jessica’s music is self-taught using chart books to learn guitar and then later piano. In one of Jessica’s songs, entitled “Breakaway”, she goes to the heart of a teenager’s (and adult’s) daily struggles. The battle self doubt, the feeling of being worthless, that can give way to temptations. But her song offers encouragement as she speaks to the devil; This battle you won’t win I’ve been at it again and again This time I won’t lose That’s just a heads up to you.

Kaleb Murray

Classification: Kindergartener Calvary Episcopal School Kaleb Murray is a kindergartener at Calvary Episcopal School, Richmond. He lives in Katy with his older brother and sister, little sister, Mom and Dad, and Chihuahua, as well as two rats and a number of fish. Kaleb is an active member of the children’s ministry at Second Baptist – West, where he enjoys Bible classes and children’s worship, as well as WAM! (Worship Arts & Music) Junior. He was recently able to sing Christmas songs during worship services with the preschool choir for the first time. The best thing about singing was “praising God,” and having friends and family there. Kaleb’s favorite musical artists are Chris Tomlin and Toby Mac. His favorite Bible verse is John 11:25, “Jesus said…‘I am the resurrection and the life’.” At school he likes working on phonics, Bible class, music, art, and having P.E. every day, as well as singing the school song. At home he likes to read, play soccer and football with his siblings, and jump on the trampoline. When he grows up he wants to be a dad, a policeman, and maybe a professional soccer player.

Jessica amplifies her favorite Bible verse: “Now my head will be lifted up above my enemies, even those who surround me. I will sacrifice in his tent with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melodies to the LORD.” - Psalm 27:6 Jessica is a member of Focus Church of Katy. Katy Christian Magazine will be highlighting local Christian students each issue and we need your help! We’re currently accepting nominations for outstanding elementary, middle school, and high school students to be featured in Katy Christian Magazine. To nominate yourself or someone else, please send an email to joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com with a short bio and photo. The students bio should include their name, school, grade, church, and life goals. If applicable, please include information about sports, hobbies, and activities as well.

Pastor Profile: Dr. Dale Olson and New Creation Lutheran Church By Ruth Towns

grandson.

Sharing news of a church planting is always exciting, especially when the atmosphere is casual and everyone is welcome. The motto at New Creation Lutheran Church is: No matter who you are… where you’ve been… what you’ve done or haven’t done… you are welcomed as a friend and cared for as God’s special gift at New Creation. In a blend of liturgical and contemporary, Dr. Dale Olson leads this new congregation after spending over 30 years in ministry. “We are a church with a big heart for people and a big vision to change the world through God’s love.” Meet the Olsons As senior pastor of New Creation, Dr. Olson has formerly led four congregations and has been an ELCA Associate Director for Evangelism. Happily married for 33 years, he and his wife Alene love ministering together. Dr. Olson enjoys leading marriage seminars. Mrs. Olson is a research analyst and former teacher and children’s minister. Together they began two preschools and have a big heart for children and their parents. Music is also a passion. “We love to share our music together. Alene directs our children’s choir, Rainbow Company.” They are parents of three wonderful children, and have one daughter-in-law and

Dr. Olson, himself, was a teacher before God called him into the ministry. “While I attended seminary, I was a youth director at a mission congregation and witnessed first hand the enthusiasm as a church grows.” Now the excitement begins anew as New Creation grows a congregation that is grace-filled and open to second chances. Planting in Fulshear Their bishop shared his desire to plant a church in the Fulshear area. In June 2012, a group of people answered the call and have already hosted a Children and Pet Blessing before the start of school, participated in Fulshear’s clean-up day, a food drive, a Peru ministry, and other activities of the community. Now February has arrived with flurry of activity. This vibrant new church shares details about where to meet and what to expect: • Tuesday, February 12: Supper-time revival of the tradition of serving pancakes on Fat Tuesday at the Irene Stern Community Center. Chef Carlos Vasquez of the Hyatt Regency Houston is the pancake master. When asked to volunteer, he replied: “Pancakes are too simple. I’ll have to add something special. You’ ll have to come to find out what.” • Wednesday, February 13: Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. to

Our prayer is that we’ll be a beacon to the community.” • Sunday, March 17: First Communion Training for children and their parents. • Sunday, March 24: First Communion for the children during the worship service. • Sunday, March 31: The children will be given a memorable photo of their First Communion.

Sharing Easter With Strangers? By Ruth Towns No matter the denomination, now matter the location, churches are generally filled to capacity during two special occasions: Christmas and Easter. Even those who do not regularly worship feel compelled to observe these holy services. In fact, churches in Katy prepare ahead of time for overflowing attendance. This year, Christians will gather on March 31 to share the resurrection story of Easter. How life-changing is the realization that Jesus paid a great price to cleanse us. We are set free from bondage… set free to minister and reach out to others. This is the Great Commission—something we can do from our home churches… something we can do on Easter Sunday. An Easter Impression We are “Easter ambassadors” for Christ, the “first impression” —visitors to our churches either feel welcomed or awkward. After all, they are the strangers in our midst, often disoriented and a bit lost in a new surrounding, especially on Easter when the crowds are dense. Our mission is to make visitors feel like family. Sometimes this is easier said than done.

Recently Pastor Tim Douglas of Creekside Community Church shared an article that can help us reach out effectively on Easter Sunday and year-round. It’s a mini-primer on church hospitality, quite helpful as we minister to others: It’s Always Someone’s First Sunday at Your Church “How a first time visitor experiences your kids area, worship, sermon—

even the parking lot—can determine a lot about if they come back. Our church recently moved into a new facility. On our first Sunday, it was everyone’s first time at the new place, and so our church got to experience again what a first time guest feels. I was reminded of an important truth that is easily forgotten the longer you attend one church or are in one building:

might feel good. Based on the worship experience, they may decide to come back next week. Signage language A simple thing to do is be clear. Post signs to the front door, parking, kids rooms and bathrooms. Make it obvious. A mentor once told me, if you think you have enough signs, add some. Remember, new people don’t know where to go. It can feel embarrassing, much like asking someone where their bathroom is the first time you are in their house.

It’s always someone’s first Sunday at your church. While we see guests each week at church, it is easy to forget this truth and the ramifications of it. They can feel lost and confused. They drive onto a church campus, they aren’t sure where to park, which door to walk into, where to drop their kids off or where the restrooms are.

Having signs also communicates to a guest, “We’ve been expecting you. Because we’ve been expecting you, we know what you are going to be feeling when you get here and we want to help you.” Give them a head’s up When they sit down, they are unsure what is going to happen. Some guests who walk in for the first time have never been to church, or a church like yours. They don’t know what to do, when to stand, how long it will last, when things happen. Where else do you stand and sing with a group of people songs you don’t know?

But their first experience could have an enormous impact on their life. Based on their experience parking or in the kids area, they may decide to be more open to your sermon. If they feel good about how their kids are feeling, then they

of your service what you are doing. Tell them how long they can expect to be there, if you say 75 minutes, it better be 75 minutes. Tell them why you sing songs that you believe to be true about Jesus, why you are doing Communion and how you do it. If you dip bread into the cup, tell them or else someone will come up and drink out of the cup. Walk it out, talk ’em up Lastly, create a culture of walking around. This can be hard in churches, but it starts with the leaders. When most people show up at their church, they want to see their friends. They don’t often think about talking to new people. To get regulars to talk to guests, the leaders must do this. At our church, you can spot the guests because five minutes before the service starts, they are the only ones sitting in the sanctuary while everyone else is mingling. Our leaders take the time to walk through the rows, say Hi! and chat them up. One of my favorite things to read on a guest feedback card is, “People talked to me.” Remember, this Sunday, it will be someone’s first time at your church. After that, who knows? They might find themselves in a small group or missional community, taking steps in their spiritual journey and one day finding themselves following Jesus—all because God used your intentionality in welcoming a first-time guest.”

Biblical Hospitality Following are scriptures on hospitality. We at Katy Christian Magazine hope these Bible verses inspire us all to minister to others at Easter and at every worship service. •

Acts 28:2—The native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold. Romans 12:13—Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

• •

Hebrews 13:2—Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

1 Peter 4:9-10—Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

3 John 1:5-8—Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters, even though they are strangers to you.

Relay for Life Katy Mar. 22 | 7:00 p.m. Katy Park Katy, TX 77493 www.relayforlife.org/katytx Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and empower others to fight back against cancer. Teams gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation. The event begins with a cancer survivors lap celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer. Games, music, and live entertainment encourage people all through the night. Some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. “The funds raised through our Relay For Life event enables us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back,” added Mike Dailey, Relay For Life of Katy/West Houston Event Chair. “Due to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, the money raised by Relay For Life participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”

Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay For Life is available at www.relayforlife.org/katytx. For more information on cancer, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit the Web site www.cancer.org. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life first started in May 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt took the first step of this 24-hour walk around the track in Tacoma, Washington raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. For more information on how you can get involved in Relay visit RelayForLife.org or call 1-800227-2345.

First Master of Divinity Class at The Bible Seminary The Bible Seminary (TBS), 2655 South Mason Rd, Katy, welcomed twelve inaugural students into its new Master of Divinity program this fall. The seminary began as a Bible Institute in 2008, and has enrolled more than 800 students in Bible Certificate classes over the last five years. Rev. Dr. K. Lynn Lewis, Executive Vice-President/Provost of The Bible Seminary says TBS is quite distinctive. “We are not affiliated with any major denomination, and we are not a satellite campus for another seminary,” says Lewis. “We envision an independent, non-denominational residential seminary based in Katy/West Houston that teaches all 66 books of the Bible and offers practical ministry training, tools, and experiences.” Lewis notes the seminary’s “apprenticeship model” is different than the traditional “classroom in a box model”, where you meet and someone talks to you about how to use what you learn after you graduate, but you don’t actually do anything yet. In addition to classroom work, each Master of Divinity student is required to spend at least five hours a week in ministry. “We talk about their ministry, how to accomplish what they are trying to do. Then the students go out and use what they learned during the week. Afterwards they might come back and say ‘that really went well, or ‘maybe that didn’t go so well’. We then study and work together to see how maybe there might be a better way of ministering.”

organizations, including seven different churches, located in four different cities – Houston, Katy, Prairie View, and Sugar Land. The seminary integrates teaching all 66 books of the Bible into subject areas that include theology, preaching, leadership, worship, prayer, and other practical areas of ministry. “A Master of Divinity typically incorporates certain degree elements, and we have designed our curriculum to incorporate a book or multiple books of the Bible as a part of every course. For example, when we teach Church History, we also walk through the entire Book of Acts.” “Also unique to The Bible Seminary’s Master of Divinity program is a trip to the Holy Land. Many schools offer the opportunity, but don’t require it. In our case, we provide it,” says Lewis. “We are actually raising the money to take each student, and if they are married, his or her spouse.” Students also receive ministry tools such as Logos Bible Software. “Many theological schools require their students to use this software, but they don’t buy it for them,” adds Lewis. “We do. We buy it for them, teach them how to use it and when they leave, it is all theirs. All the digital resources they have at seminary, they take with them when they leave wherever they go in ministry.” For more information about The Bible Seminary or its programs, call 281-646-1109 or visit www.TheBibleSeminary.org.
