As you know, Easter is approaching! Many Christians hold onto the true significance of the holiday – a celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Unfortunately, over the years, Easter has taken on a worldy nature. Easter egg hunts have replaced Sunday Services and Easter bunnies are displayed at large, rather than the death of Christ on the Cross. While I have no inherent problem with these secular traditions, it bothers me that the focus of Easter has shifted from its true meaning. Without the death of Christ on the cross, there would be salvation for sinners. Jesus paid the price for sin, and without his sacrifice, we would be lost. It is so essential to hold onto the spirituality of this beautiful holiday. “15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” – John 3:15-17 (KJV) This issue also features our Christian Voters’ Guide. Katy Christian Magazine and Fort Bend Christian Magazine have been privileged to meet and interact with most of these candidates, and collected questionnaires that adequately portray their values. Hopefully these will prove useful to you when voting! Many of these races are very tough to call and most of the people running are genuinely good people. I have developed a close relationship with some of the candidates, and I fully believe they are the most well suited and morally conscious people for the job. I would include Daryl Segura, Troy Nehls, Frank Yeverino, Vincent Morales, Clyde Leuchtag, and Wayne Thompson in this category. Likewise, some people have been in office for far too long, and change is desperately needed. They campaign to us and promise one thing, and once in Washington, it’s business as usual. It’s necessary to elect candidates who intend on fulfilling their promises. I believe James Lloyd to be one of these people- he would make an excellent member of Congress. He has my vote. Whomever you decide to vote for, I think issues that should be of the utmost important to Christians are pro- God, pro-life, and pro- family platforms. I believe that the people we have endorsed are the best and most qualified candidates’ we have. Joseph R. Menslage President/Publisher Katy Christian Magazine joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com

Mayor of Katy Stands Up for Godly Values with Addition of “In God We Trust” to City Vehicles By Jessa McClure A woman, in her pajamas and bathrobe, stands in her driveway watching paramedics load her husband into an ambulance. He’s having chest pains and shortness of breath and the woman doesn’t know what will happen next. But as the doors of the City of Katy ambulance close behind the stretcher, the woman sees the words “In God We Trust” painted on the emergency vehicle. She takes this as a sign from her creator that everything will be okay. Moments like this are part of the reason Katy Mayor Fabol Hughes pushed to have these words placed on all of the city’s emergency vehicles. “So many people are afraid to offend somebody,” Hughes said. “Well, I’m offended that no one has spoken up for what I believe. That’s why I took a stand and put those words on our vehicles.” The idea to add the phrase to the city police cars, ambulances and fire trucks originally came from a letter Hughes received from the Texas Municipal League (TML).

Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

“They (TML) passes along things that happen in the legislature,” he said. “I happened to get a letter from them saying that the Attorney General had issued an opinion on ‘In God We Trust.’ He said it was consistent with the US Constitution and was okay to be displayed.”

Photo courtesy of the City of Katy.

Hughes realized in that moment that displaying our nation’s motto could be another way to forget about political correctness and show the world the city’s values.

All God’s Creatures Reptile Rescue

“I wrote across the letter, ‘we should do this,’ and my secretary, Linda, sent it over to the police chief,” Hughes said. “About a week later [the police chief ] called me and thanked me and said, ‘I’ve been trying to get this done since 2000.’” After a television news crew picked up the story and posted a picture of one of the city fire trucks on their social media page, the image went viral. Thousands of people commented and liked the picture. Soon, the mayor was receiving calls, emails and Facebook messages from supporters all over the country. “It’s spread like wildfire, with people contacting us from Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco and Wisconsin,” he said. “We were the second city to do this, and now several cities have gotten in line to do it. I’m hopeful that it will spread nationwide.” Our country was built on Godly values, Hughes said. And it’s time we recognize that and get back to that. “When you turn away from God, then you’re in trouble,” he said. “He’s got to be part of it.” The mayor said the biggest supporters of his efforts have been residents of Katy. “Everybody I know around the City of Katy has been really positive,” he said. “I can’t tell you how many people have called me in support and have stopped me on the street to say, ‘good job, Mayor.’” Hughes said Katy’s conservative, Godly values are what originally attracted him and his wife to the area when they moved there 44 years ago. “At the time, the population was less than 3,000 people, and there were like 13 churches,” he said. “Now, you can’t even count the G E N E R AT O R S • A U T O M AT I C S TA N D B Y F O R Y O U R H O M E O R B U S I N E S S

number of churches, and we are known as the city of churches.” Because the response to the addition of “In God We Trust” has been overwhelming positive in the City of Katy, the mayor is encouraging other Godly-minded cities to stand up for what they believe in. “Don’t let negativism get to you,” he said. “If it’s what you believe in, then stand up for it. If you don’t stand up for anything, then you’ll fall for everything.”

Easter Ham with Pineapple Ingredients • 12 lb. bone-in ham • 1/2 c. whole cloves • 20 oz. can pineapple rings in heavy syrup • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar • 12 fl. oz. can or bottle lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage • 4 oz. jar chopped maraschino cherries

Tip: Aluminum foil can be used to keep food moist, cook it evenly, and make clean-up easier.

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C). 2. Place ham in a roasting pan. Score the rind of the ham with a diamond pattern. Press a clove into the center of each diamond. Drain the juice from the pineapple rings into a medium bowl, and stir in the brown sugar and lemon-lime soda. Coat the ham with this mixture. Arrange the pineapple rings over the outside of the ham. Place a maraschino cherry in the center of each pineapple ring, and secure with a toothpick. 3. Bake uncovered for 4 to 5 hours, basting frequently with the juices, until the internal temperature of the ham is 160 degrees F (72 degrees C). Be sure the meat thermometer is not touching the bone. Remove toothpicks before serving.

Christian Business Profile: Real Estate Agent Tiffany Palacios By Jessa McClure When real estate agent, Tiffany Palacios started taking classes to acquire her real estate license, she had no idea that helping the people of the Houston area buy and sell their homes would become her passion. “My brother got me into the business,” Palacios said. “He started doing residential wholesaling and I took an interest. But he kept talking in real estate terms that I didn’t understand, so I decided to get my license to understand him and his business.” But, as she went through the licensing process she began to fall in love with the stories she heard and the people who were helped by other real estate agents. “My brother eventually left the business, but it seems to have worked out perfectly for me,” she said. The native Texan said helping people find their dream home not only interested her, but she realized it fit well with her personality.

“I love helping people already, and my main personality trait is kindness, so I love that I’m able to solve people’s problems,” Palacios said. “If I’m talking to a potential client, going through a rough patch

with a listing, or going back and forth with a listing price, I like to make light of the situation and explain things on a buyer’s level to help them understand the process.” Palacios’ ultimate reward is getting to the closing table with her clients and seeing everyone happy. “I love to create win-win situations on both sides of the sale,” she said. “Every time I’m able to accomplish that, it’s the greatest feeling.” She said she strives to meet and exceed her client’s expectations, whether they’re buying or selling, so they will want to refer her to their friends, family and people they meet on a daily basis. “I want them to be so happy with their experience that they become walking, talking billboards out there for me every day,” she said. Although the real estate agent has only been in the business for less than two years, she has high aspirations. “I have goals of becoming a go-to luxury agent in the Memorial and River Oaks area,” she said. “That’s on my big goals to-do list.” But for now, as she works her way up the ladder of success, she serves communities all over the Houston area. “I’m from Rosenberg, so I’m very familiar with that area. So, if someone is looking out that way, I can definitely help them,” she said. “I can also help with listings up to Sugar Land, and through Katy and into Houston.”

As she acquires more listings, Palacios sees her work not only as an opportunity to further her career, but as a way of being an instrument for God’s work. “I’m a firm believer in everything happens for a reason,” she said. “I try to tell people that God has already qualified me for this or I wouldn’t be here.” The real estate agent said knowing God is with her through every aspect of her life and career gives her the comfort she needs to get through even her roughest days. “I remember that He puts me in the right place at the right time and that he has already blessed me greatly,” she said. “That’s what gives me the confidence to face every challenge.”

Former Rice University Admissions Officer to Lecture on Ways to Slash College Costs Workshop is free – but fills up quickly… Katy, TX - An extremely popular lecture is being held again this year at Cinco Ranch Library for the parents of high school sophomores and juniors. The workshop, which is being offered without cost to attendees, will focus on little-known ways of getting grants and scholarships for college, regardless of GPA or how much money a family earns. The class will cover topics such as how to double or triple eligibility for scholarships (even if a family makes too much money to qualify for financial aid), the secret to attending a private college or university for less than the

price of a state school and the single biggest mistake that 9 out of 10 parents make when trying to figure out how to fund their child’s college education. This class is free and registration is required. Tickets are available on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Space is limited by the size of the room. It is being held at the Cinco Ranch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd., in Katy, on Thursday, August 20th from 7:00 to 8:30pm. The library is across the street from Cinco Ranch High School about one block from Grand Parkway/Hwy 99. Kurt Goedecke, ChFC, is teaching

the workshop. Mr. Goedecke is the former Assistant Director of Admissions at Rice University and a nationally recognized expert on college planning. A word to the wise – don’t wait to register. Past events have filled up quickly. To reserve a seat go to www.CollegeMoneyForTexans.org.

Irrevocable Living Trusts as a Solution for Long-term Care Costs By Margaret McCullough Connolly, Attorney and Counselor at Law If you, or a family member, does not qualify for long term care insurance, but discover the need for long term or nursing home care for the individual, how can you protect your family’s assets from being depleted by paying for long term care? If you want to shield your estate from the costs of a nursing home or other potential creditor, you may form and fund an irrevocable trust with those assets or property. This involves naming someone else to act as trustee of the property. Ownership of the property is transferred to the Trust, and the Trustee is obligated to protect and preserve the assets, per instructions contained in the Trust, and to pay out income from the Trust to Beneficiaries you designate in the Trust. Because you no longer own the assets, they cannot be used to pay costs of nursing home care, and cannot be attached by creditors to satisfy your debts. The catch is, for this type of protection, the trust must be irrevocable - you can’t change your mind and take your property back

Authentic Peruvian Food!

after you move it into the trust’s ownership. Your ownership of your property is severed so a nursing home can’t expect you to use these assets to pay for your care – they’re not yours any longer.

Moving your property into such a trust allows you to qualify for Medicaid. When you make the transfer of property, you effectively deplete your estate of disposable assets. This doesn’t have to leave you bereft – the trust can provide you with income produced from the assets it holds. (*Also subject to Medicaid Limits.) But – trust income can be paid as reimbursement of family members, for payments made by them for your care. The other catch is that Medicaid has a five-year “look back”

period that can put you in a bit of a bind if you’ve moved your countable assets into an irrevocable trust and can’t get them back. You cannot qualify for Medicaid for five (5) years after you transfer your property into the trust. If you transfer assets, then need long-term care four years and 11 months later, you’re within this look-back period – and you may not be looking at just a month of ineligibility until you reach five years. How long you’re ineligible depends on the value of the property you placed in trust and the average monthly cost of nursing home care in your state. If the average monthly cost is $5,000, the government divides the value of your transferred property by this number. If you moved $100,000 in assets, this comes out to 20, so you’d be ineligible for Medicaid for 20 months -- almost two years. Meanwhile, you can’t get your property back to pay for your care during this time. Bottom line - It’s a good idea to consult with a lawyer to explore all your options before you take such a permanent step. This article does not constitute legal advice. It is to be used for descriptive purposes only. Please seek the advice of a competent lawyer in your state.

Why Local Races Matter By Gary Gillen I am occasionally surprised to meet an individual who consistently votes in Presidential elections but does not vote in Party Primaries or Local races. I think we all understand why it is important to educate ourselves and vote in the Presidential race but let’s talk about local races today. The local level of government has more effect on your daily life than any other. From the location of Stop Signs to speed limits on city streets to where your children go to school it is the local level of government: City Councils, School Boards and, yes, even Home Owner’s Associations that dictate so much of our lives. They determine the taxes you pay on your home and the dues you pay your homeowner’s association. Yet it is these races that are often decided by a very few people. There are many local and down ballot races and it is so easy to meet these candidates because they go to church with us, shop with us, eat with us. I suspect if you e-mail or telephone any of the local candidates they will gladly come

to visit you because they want your vote. As Christians and citizens it is our obligation to let our voices be heard and most important we must educate ourselves, find candidates with whose positions we agree and support them. This includes precinct level county races such as Constable, County Commissioner, and Justice of the Peace. A word of warning… It isn’t reasonable to expect to find an elected official or candidate with whom we always agree. When you find a politician who agrees with you 100% of the time-be suspicious. Is he or she pandering to you or your community or truly on the same page as you? Voters who refuse to vote for a candidate they do not agree with on every single issue are often called “litmus test” voters.

These voters would rather see the opposition elected than vote for a candidate who is not “pure” enough for their taste. We saw this during the last presidential race when some people felt Mitt Romney, the Republican Candidate for President, was not conservative enough so they stayed home on Election Day and guaranteed President Obama’s re-election. As you can see, the decisions of voters have consequences. For example, I suspect that I was not the only person surprised by a recent article in a local publication that pointed out that Katy was on the list of Sanctuary Cities. Thinking it must have been a mistake I searched the internet and found Katy listed as a Sanctuary City in several publications. Regardless of whether you think that is good or bad, that is not the reason I mention it. I mention it because it is an example, admittedly extreme in this case, of the kinds of decisions local elected officials make and why it is important for voters to keep informed of the activities of local government officials. If you agree with that decision, to make Katy a Sanctuary City, you should let your elected officials know that and vote to keep them in office. If you disagree, you should let your voice be heard and get involved in replacing those who chose to make Katy a Sanctuary City. It’s up to you. Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control and Gillen Political Strategies in Richmond. He is the only person in history to have served on both the Richmond City Commission and the Rosenberg City Council. He was the Chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County 2006-2007. He can be reached at Gary@GaryGillen.com

Intense Men 2016 By Pastor GF Watkins Our men are lost. The pendulum has swung way to the left. Our nation and our world need men of character, integrity, single-mindedness, courage and maturity to stand up and begin to reverse the curse of apathy, weak-mindedness, complacency, and cowardice that has gripped this once proud and powerful nation. To reverse the curse, it will take many working together in biblical unity. The experience is available now. The tools are available now. The team is available now. The willing heart to offer the help is available now. Strong churches exist because the men in them are strong in their faith and their courage. When we use the term church, keep in mind the first churches were called the ecclesia or the set apart ones. They were set part because of their sacrificial hearts. These were people who understood the fact that if they joined this set apart group, they would be killed for a cause bigger than themselves. The first church was a group of ultimate warriors. The eternal prize is still the ultimate cause for a man to lay down his life. The following thoughts are my effort to expose why I feel it is time to plant truths in the local church that will strengthen the men

and thereby strengthen the church. The majority of churches worldwide are composed of a ratio of 80 percent female members and 20 percent male members. The Bible is written to men and initially intended to be taught to men in a congregational setting. The men, as heads of their homes, would then be responsible for taking this information back and leading their homes in the implementation of these truths. You can have

spirituality (worship, praise, atmosphere, righteousness, etc.) with women, but it takes godly, courageous men to bring strength, action, warfare, discipline, direction, leadership, single-mindedness, and decisiveness to the Church. The above-mentioned percentages show us a matriarchal or mother led country, family, and church which depletes the attributes of a male or father figure. For example, a male is more prone to discipline with a physical force like a spanking or pushups, while a female is more prone to discipline with her words. A current example of this can be seen in two presidents. President George W. Bush was raised with a father in his home so when America was under attack on 9/11, he responded decisively and almost immediately with military force. President Obama was raised in a matriarchal environment therefore he tries diplomatic or verbal means to rectify threatening situations. When we enter most churches we see young urban heterosexual males with a liberal political view, who wear skinny jeans, grooms his eyebrows, colors his hair with streaks of yellow, does his nails, and is interested in the latest and greatest TV fads. Immature males are adapting to the culture of a feminine church and have little heart for sacrifice. Evangelizing the man is actually the pattern of the Bible. Jesus picked twelve men disciples to change the world. God came in the form of a man, Jesus, to illustrate roles of leadership and sacrifice from a man’s perspective. When a child is the first person saved in a family there is a 3 percent chance the rest of his family will be saved. When the mother is the first to be saved, the percentage increases to 13 percent. When the man/father is first to be saved, the percentage increases to 95

percent. The man is the ultimate influencer even though he is usually more difficult to win over. On March 17, 18, and 19 of 2016, we will hold our annual Intense Men Gathering. This event is a gathering of men to compete, camp and learn about biblical manhood. Surviving Spring Break: A Guide for Parents and Teens By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein What’s not to like about Spring Break? It’s a much needed respite from school; the beginning of a fresh, new season; and an opportunity to spend lots of time together as a family. And there’s the rub. Sometimes it doesn’t take long for lots of time to turn into too much time. Teens can be irritable, inflexible, moody, and unreasonable in their expectations. Seven full days of these emotions can stretch the patience of even the most saintly parents, so here are seven tips to get you through Spring Break with a smile on your face. Expect your kids to sleep in; keep the schedule flexible. Most teens sleep longer than we do, and this isn’t due to laziness. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens need 8.5 to 10 hours of sleep per night to function best, a little more than the adult recommendation of 7 to 9 hours. Just as we like to catch up on our sleep during vacation, teens do too, especially if they are highly academically motivated or involved in sports and activities that consume most of their days. You may be impatient waiting for them to start their day, but allowing them to wake at their leisure will make for better

attitudes and more appreciative teens who are more likely to go along with your plans. Remember that it’s the little things that make memories. My son is 23 years old now, but he still talks about that one time in high school when we played miniature golf. Why? Because the winner got to choose any dessert he wanted as a prize, and his competitive nature brought him that win, and, as I recall, a tub of Snickers ice cream. Our family has taken major trips and spent a lot of money on activities, but this putt-putt adventure cost about 20 bucks, and it’s a day he remembers fondly. Sometimes the most priceless packages are wrapped in the smallest boxes. Proceed with caution when it comes to teen Spring Break trips. I understand that teens want to travel and “escape the real world” for just a bit, but if it’s financially feasible, I urge you to do this as a family, versus sending them off with other teens. High schoolers are still quite naïve to the ways of the world and even the best of them can find themselves in uncomfortable or unsafe situations when they are away from home without adult supervision. High school kids staying with college-age kids at a Spring Break destination can be a recipe for disaster, and I encourage you to avoid this.

Let your kids enjoy balanced, unhurried days. Educators and child psychologists are seeing more stressed-out kids than ever before, so it’s important that kids have this chance to relax and do what they love to do. Give them a chance to sit around in their PJs and surf the net, but also try to plan a unique activity into each day that gives them something to look forward to. This can be anything from a movie to an evening at an arcade to visiting family across the miles. The key is to get them out of the house and moving, even if it’s only for a couple hours each day.

Make your home a comfortable place to be, for both them and their friends. Encourage your kids to invite their friends to the house, and always let these friends know that you like them and they are welcome. My daughter and her friends spent hours in our kitchen baking and talking, then sharing their sweets with the family. Our

son and his friends spent entire evenings around the fire pit in the backyard, just shooting the breeze, playing guitar, and laughing. I always knew who my kids’ friends were, and I always knew what they were doing. There’s definitely something to be said for being the host house. It may cost you in groceries, but the tradeoff is well worth it. Find one go-to activity that your family enjoys doing together. Never underestimate the power of tradition. It creates comfort and familiarity and creates cohesiveness within a family. Kids may never say it, but every time you come together to resume a task, continue a game, or recreate a memory, you solidify the family bond. For some families, it’s working a 1,000-piece puzzle. For others, it’s playing pool, cards, or a board game. There’s nothing more beautiful than turning a fun family activity into a treasured tradition. During Spring Break, no matter where you are or what you’re doing, spend time resurrecting special moments. Take some time to remind your kids to finish the school year strong. This is a tough stretch for kids. They get a taste of summer freedom this week, but tired as they are of school, they must return for a few final months. Encourage your kids to use these break days to rejuvenate and refresh so they can do their best work during this end-of-year push. Kids should be prepping for final exams, AP exams, and for some, SAT and ACT, so a little parental encouragement is crucial at this time. No matter what you decide to do with your kids, know that just spending time together is the absolute best goal to have. Here’s to a relaxing and peaceful Spring Break 2016!

God Bless the USA By Stephanie Leggett The United States of America was birthed in Prayer. The Continental Congress called for prayer and fasting in 1775 as they sought wisdom to create a brand new nation. The National Day of Prayer has been honored in Katy, Texas since it’s inception in 1952. Many people remember meeting in the city square of downtown Katy twenty years ago, and individual churches have faithfully honored the day holding prayer meetings through the years to lift our nation up in prayer. But in 2010 several pastors decided to do something unprecedented. They endeavored to join forces in prayer. The Merrell Center was booked for 2011 and 50 churches from many denominations and backgrounds came together to seek Gods favor for the United States of America. Since then it has continued to grow with 4000 people from all over the greater west Houston/Katy area join in worship and prayer for our great nation. It seems a movement of unity has captured the city. Churches are joining forces on many initiatives including the Perspectives class, The IF: Gatherings, Arise Women of Katy, pastors

joining together as The Katy Church (thekatychurch.org) and more. Parishioners are crossing long held boundaries and attending bible studies and worship events at places other than their home church as they recognize that together we make the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12). In recent years worship for the National Day of Prayer at the Merrell Center has been led by worship leaders from the area, and

the prayer segments have always been led by a variety of pastors. But things changed a bit in 2014 when Christian Radio Station KSBJ got involved. They began to bring national level artists like The Afters and All Sons and Daughters as well as production assistance. The award winning station recognized the unique nature of the event and wanted to support a unified prayer initiative. What has not changed is the heart of the event. Mike Hooper, Director of Prayer Initiatives at KSBJ says this; “Last year the worship and the united prayer led by

the local area pastors was amazing! This year I am expecting a mighty outpouring of his Spirit on our community as churches and pastors come together from all over the city to seek God for our Nation. God’s people praying is the hope of our Nation.” He is right. The theme of this years event comes from Malachi 3:7 “…Return to me and I will return to you.” 2014 was also the year that the date of Fire on the Altar was moved to align with the date of the National Day of Prayer. Now the event at the Merrell center kicks off 50 hours of non-stop worship and prayer that will continue at the Epi Center,(2655 South Mason Road). Churches take turns, one after the other, to lead worship and prayer that is continuous covering 3 days! Anyone is welcome to stop in to Fire on the Altar, day or night, and spend some quiet time in prayer. Some come for 10 minutes and others stay for hours with Bible and journal in hand. In Katy, Texas, The National Day of Prayer Ignites Fire on the Altar is one event, at two locations, spanning 3 days. The pastors of Katy want worship and prayer, not a concert and not teaching about prayer. They don’t want to TALK about prayer, they want to pray! Together. For our churches. Our families. And for the United States of America. Mark your calendar now for May 5-7, 2016 and together we will seek His face for the heart of this great nation. Many opportunities to volunteer at the Merrell Center and Fire on the Altar can be found at www.KatyPrays.org.

Dear Doctor: After Menopause, Am I at Increased Risk for Heart Disease? Why? Dr. Jean Ekwenibe UT Health Science Center at Houston Menopause occurs when a woman’s monthly cycle comes to an end and she is no longer able to reproduce. As we get older, we all have increased risk for heart disease, but this risk is more evident in women who have gone through menopause. Many doctors and scientists believe that pre-menopausal women who are able to produce estrogen have a protective effect against heart disease; this is partly due to the ability of estrogen to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (good cholesterol). After menopause, estrogen levels significantly decrease and the risk of coronary heart disease in a woman becomes equivalent with a man’s risk. Should I take estrogen replacement? Several studies have taken a closer look to determine whether post-menopausal women benefit from estrogen replacement therapy in order to prevent cardiovascular disease. Two notable research studies were the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement study (HERS) and the Women’s Health Initiative Estrogen Plus Progestin

Study (WHI). Both studies showed no benefit from hormone replacement regarding cardiovascular risk and rather revealed increased harm. The harmful side effects included increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). As a result of these findings from the HERS and WHI studies, hormone therapy is no longer recommended to prevent coronary heart disease in women, and doctors are guided to treat symptoms of menopause with the lowest dose of hormones for the shortest amount of time. How do I lower my risk for heart disease? Following a healthy lifestyle and minimizing the risk factors associated with coronary heart disease will help to significantly lower your risk over time. This includes good nutrition, regular exercise, smoking cessation, normal blood pressure measurements, and low cholesterol levels. It is important to meet with a doctor regularly for a thorough assessment and to talk about your personal risks. Dr. Jean Ekwenibe is a board certified Cardiologist with the McGovern Medical School at Houston, and she is currently available for new patient consultations at UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. Smells Like God! By Stephanie Leggett “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are perishing…” - 2 Cor. 2:14-15 Do you like a victory parade? Just the phrase brings to mind a Norman Rockwell sort of scene with a charming small town, streets lines with onlookers, a marching band, waving beauty queens, heroes and dignitaries. The Romans had a victory parade too. It was called the Roman Triumph. The conquering general would ride in a golden chariot toward his king surrounded by his officers. The spoils of war were displayed along with the people who had been taken captive. Roman Priests carried incense and flowers were thrown on the path to be crushed under the hooves of the horses. The fragrance of the incense and crushed flowers must have been powerful. Pauls’ analogy was clear to the Corinthians. In light of the victory that happened at the cross, Jesus Christ is the honored general leading us, Christians under his command, on a triumphal precession to our God and king. The forces of evil are put to shame and

displayed for all to see. And through us, Christ spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere we go. To quote my friend Paul Helbig, “Smells like God!” Lord, let us be a sweet fragrance to you and to all we encounter day in and day out. I pray that the love of Christ would draw people to your kingdom like a baking cake draws people to the kitchen. Let us interact with people of all faiths, backgrounds and political persuasions in a manor that is attractive. And with that display of love, let the forces of darkness tremble. Amen.

Local Christian School Highlights

Area Student Selected as Texas All-State Musician Sofia Rendek, a member of the Faith West Academy Choir, performed with the Texas All-State Choir in San Antonio, Saturday, February 13, 2016. The performance was held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2016 Texas Music Educators Association Convention. Sofia, a 10th grade student, earned third chair Soprano 1 for the State Performance. She was chosen for this prestigious honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at district, region, and area levels. “It is exceedingly difficult to earn a chair in one of the All-State Choirs,” said Faith West Academy choir director Carren Ellis. Only the top 3% of 64,000 musicians who initially audition become all-state musicians. Sofia is a student of Michel Dial & David Golasso, and she sings at school under the direction of Mrs. Ellis, who is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA). This was Sofia’s third time competing at the area level but her first time to perform as a member of a TMEA All-State organization. Sofia’s interest in music began in 5th grade. She was exposed rock music at an early age, as her dad toured with the band Rush. She had the opportunity to meet Geddy Lee, lead vocalist for Rush, on several occasions, and he remains one of her favorite singers today, along with Ariana Grande. However, Sofia’s favorite music interest is operatic in style, from the Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century. She sited Johann Sebastian Bach as one of her favorite composers. In preparing for competition, she will drink as many as eight bags of tea, followed by warm-ups. She stated that she doesn’t get nervous before an audition, and attributes that to her mother who peaked her interest in drama at an early age, boosting her self-confidence. “The most difficult part of an audition,’ she says, ‘is how to set the tone for the piece. Understanding the meaning of the piece, and how to put my own stuff, my own artistic style into the piece, is critical.”Sofia is the daughter of Steve and Jennifer Rendek of Katy. The Texas Music Educators Association is an association of over 12,000 school music educators dedicated to promoting excellence in music education. Go to www.tmea.org/convention for more information.
