Inspired
to Higher Education by Olivia Cane
Cambridge dictionary defines the word inspiration as, “someone or something that give you ideas for doing something.” Its root meaning is to “breath into.” In the case of Chevella Sampson, a hairstylist of ten years, that breath of inspiration came to her during a deeply moving spiritual transformation. “The Lord placed on my heart the urge to dig deeper,” she explained. “He called on me to study His word.” At the time, she didn’t know how God wanted her to do that. “Yet I was inspired to go to church one morning,” Chevella explains. “there I met a Belhaven University representative who told me that no matter what your course of study, Belhaven will teach you the word of Christ. I could actually feel God speaking to me.” “I was nervous. I hadn’t been in school for 25 years,” continues Chevella. “Would I be accepted How was I going to manage books, tuition, financial aid? But I wanted to learn more about the Bible, and I knew in my heart that the Christ-based curriculum at Belhaven was the right place for me. Then I called a Belhaven University counselor. It was like she completed my thoughts! All my fears were instantly put to rest. The staff made it so easy. Financial aid was available to me even before God promised me it would be. I
was overjoyed – and most importantly, I knew this was where I belonged.” Today, Chevella has been at Belhaven for two years. “Everybody seems like family They know your name and they want you to succeed. My professors have an open-door policy. If you need guidance, guidance will be provided to you. But it’s the Biblical perspective that’s super important. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how much you’ve got it together –or even if you don’t have it together. Having a Biblical perspective in your education not only allows you to expand your career, it fulfills a purpose in life no matter what talent you have. Talent is no good without purpose. And your purpose is to know the word of Christ.” For Houston residents who want to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree quickly and affordably, Belhaven University is the answer to a quality adult studies program. Both degree programs are tailored to the needs of busy working adults. Belhaven students graduate with the tools they need to stay competitive in today’s global economy, and they do it with all the love and support of the word of God. “Belhaven is everything you expect in a God-inspired learning environment,” Chevella says. “You will feel so at home here.”
“Everybody seems like ”
family.

Our Mission Statement:
Have you ever noticed how children absorb everything? They notice every minute detail of life- a beautiful sunset, the birds singing in the trees, the clouds painting pictures in the sky. As adults, we live in the same beautiful world that we did as children; however, we’ve grown to take these things features for granted. Life grows more complicated and busier with age. The first thing that crosses my mind when I wake up each morning is what my schedule will consist of for the day, followed by the urgency to have my kids ready for school on time. Those items are important, but far too often I neglect the one priority I should not in the mornings: God’s will for me that day. I suppose I am guilty, like so many of us, in taking God for granted. So many people take their spouses for granted as well. As years pass in our marriages, we grow comfortable and complacent, often forgetting to compliment our wives in how beautiful they look, or taking a moment to acknowledge the fact that they’ve changed their hair. We don’t notice the new dress they are wearing, or thank them for the wonderful meals they prepare for the family. We take advantage of their permanence in our lives, and begin to neglect what we did to win their hearts initially; when we were trying to romance them and make them our wives. This Valentine’s Day, go the extra mile to show your significant other how much they mean to you. Plan something memorable and special to remind them that if you could do it all over again, you would. Proverbs 18:22 tells us, “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.” Additionally, on April 14, please help Faith West Academy in their 5k Fun Run and 1k Walk/ Run, the Resurrection Run Katy! The Re-Modelista By Caitlin Richards As a contractor, Teri Gilberg has made a name for herself in the Fort Bend home renovation and remodeling business. The Re-Modelista is what they call her and high-quality work and exceptional customer service is what she stands for. After working in the contracting business for Home Depot, Teri decided to try her hand at being a contractor herself. It’s no surprise that she has grown from one crew to three crews in only a few years. “Our business grew by word of mouth and persistence was the main ingredient,” Teri said. There are few women in the contracting business and Teri sees it as an advantage. She appreciates her male subcontractors and their expertise. Together she thinks they make the perfect team. “With their skill set and my attention to detail together, it is a good mixture for the clients,” Teri said. Renovating and remodeling properties is something Teri enjoys but it isn’t her favorite part of the job. It is working with the customers to make their vision a reality.

“I like to give people vision and produce what they envision,” Teri said. “The end result is always rewarding. There aren’t any projects that don’t turn out pretty.” The relationships Teri builds with her clients, because of her superior customer service is what makes her work stand out in an industry that is notorious for ripping people off and not getting the job done. “I will work to the very end to make sure somebody is happy,” Teri said. “I am very customer service oriented and like to see results. When I go in, it feels good to know that I can reassure somebody this is going to be a great experience.” The commitment Teri shows to each project is evident in her work. Her favorite renovation and remodel projects are kitchens and bathrooms. Sometimes a style just needs to be changed or it needs to be more functional for the client. Either way, Teri enjoys working with clients to get it exactly how they want it. “My clients are so talented as well,” Teri said. “I don’t think they realize how talented they are in coming up with what they want. I just help them realize it.” The Re-modelista doesn’t have a set style. Her style is bringing her customer’s visions to life. She is passionate about crafting the perfect new space for clients and it shows in her work. “My style is reflected by what the client is asking me to do,” Teri said.

“There are no rules. Everything is for the taking.” The scope of Teri’s services range from gutting a house and reworking kitchens, to only updating floors and repainting walls. Teri enjoys experiencing with new materials clients have in mind and helping indecisive clients find exactly what they are looking for. “I enjoy being able to work with clients as far as collecting materials and putting together the construction side of things with them too,” Teri said. “It’s a collective effort.” Teri took a leap of faith to start this business and she is thankful she did. She encourages others to do the same in their life and to find a path they are passionate about. Teri’s faith has played a large role in her success. She admits she has had days where things were tough and she thought she might fail. Her faith is what got her through though. “I pray about everything,” Teri said. “I pray for guidance to make the right decisions and strength to persevere. I couldn’t make it without my faith. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank God for the opportunities he has given me. I never want to be ungrateful and take what I have for granted.” To learn more about Teri and her work, visit theremodelista.com or call 832-731-3191.

But What Can We Do? By Stephanie Leggett Director of Community Relations, The Great Southwest Prayer Center Lately I’ve been troubled by the extent of violence, anger, hatred and destruction that I see. It seems like there is a new report of terrorism every time I turn around. We hear about hate crimes, vandalism, brutality and backlash. Each incident stirs up more fear in our already fearful hearts. That same fear causes us to withdraw from one another. We become isolated, separating from anyone different than ourselves. So what is to be done? What can one man or one woman do in the face of so much hatred and violence? How do we keep our children safe? And how will we ever see true change? Well, I don’t know much, but I trust these words from Zechariah 4:6 “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.” But what does that even mean? I think it means that God can accomplish what we cannot do alone. Of course, we have our part to play. Love and respect are always appropriate answers. But ultimately, the battle is spiritual. My pastor recently shared in a sermon that prayer averted disaster at a Super Bowl. Someone had a terrible dream about violence and destruction at the nationally televised game and took it seriously. She took some friends to the stadium and prayed the day before the game. It was later revealed that a man who intended to do harm had “a sudden change of heart” in the stadium parking lot and called his
father crying instead of carrying out his wicked plan. Wow. Prayer works. Peter admonishes us to “…have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and humble mind.” (1 Peter 3: 8-9) He says it is what we are called to. We are called to not “repay evil for evil.” How can we have unity of mind with those we disagree with? It sounds like an impossible task. And yet we are called to it. I submit that we can always find SOMETHING to agree on! The aforementioned love and respect for instance. That’s a good start. We have a weapon with which we can destroy strongholds of hatred

and violence.. It is available to all who call on the name of God. We have a belt of truth and a breastplate of righteousness. We have a shield of faith that extinguishes the flaming darts of the evil one. And the one offensive weapon we have been given is the word of God. (Ephesians 6: 10 – 18) That’s what we can agree on. The word of God. In Katy, Texas churches from every denomination join together annually to do just that. Once a year we can come together for the National Day of Prayer and we agree on the word of God, the value of unity and of forgiveness. Pastors from many different churches lead more than 4000 people in prayer for our nation, our city, our schools and for our families. We stand together, different, and yet the same, and united in Christ we hold up that shield of faith over Katy, Texas. We vote different, we look different, we worship different, but we can agree on the cross. Jesus said there was power in unity. He prayed that we would be one like he was one with the Father. He said that our unity would be a witness to the unbelieving. (John 17:20-26) If Jesus wanted it, then I want it too. We should all want it. So come, stand with me on May 4th. Let’s do what we can. Come be the change we so long for. Let’s take up the shield of faith and the word of God to do battle for the Kingdom of God.

First Annual Katy Resurrection Run is Right Around the Corner By Caitlin Richards The 1st Annual Katy Resurrection Run is only a few short months away. Title sponsors B&B Butchers and Restaurants along with the Run’s other sponsors hope you will join them in supporting Faith West’s Eagle Initiative on April 14, 2017. “It is going to be a great event,” Benjamin Berg, B&B Butchers & Restaurant proprietor said. “It is going to be a great day with your family. We are excited for it and hope everyone will come out for the Run.” For all of the Run’s generous sponsors, supporting the event was an easy decision because of the large impact Faith West’s Eagle Initiative makes. The Eagle Initiative is Faith West’s outreach to the community where they give Faith West camp and school scholarships, and partner with numerous community organizations to make a difference. “With everything that we do here at the restaurant and I do personally in my life, it is all really about giving back,” Berg said. “Especially to organizations whose values and missions are like the ones the Run supports.”

Organizations the Eagle initiative benefits include Caring 4 Katy, Good Shepherd, Sunshine Kids and Sunshine Thru the Rain. The Eagle Initiative’s impact is far reaching as some of the organizations benefit children and families from downtown Houston to the greater area. “It is really great when you can find something to sponsor and get involved with that makes sense and everyone within the restaurant and our family can get behind,” Berg said. “It makes it easy and a no brainer. We are honored and excited to be a part of it.” Besides title sponsors, B&B Butchers and Restaurants, there are several businesses from the greater Katy area who are supporting the Run. Sponsors have found a way to use their individual gifts as a business to help support the Run. The agency Adwebvertising has generated the Run’s website, graphics and all promotional materials. Adwebvertising has been involved from the beginning and were eager to support the cause. “As a member of the core team, it is our goal to simply serve in any capacity where our gifts and talents can be utilized for the benefit of the Run and the glory of God,” Nick Covanes, Adwebvertising CEO and creative director said. Besides supporting the Eagle Initiative, Adwebvertising was even more excited to be a part of the Run because of what the Run will be celebrating that day – the Easter story. “The theme of the Run is very central to our foundational beliefs as a company,” Covanes said. “As believers in Christ we look forward to celebrating the resurrection with others in our community.” Media sponsors for the event include Covering Katy and The Katy News. Both organizations will be sharing all of the latest details and information about the Run on their Facebook pages and websites. “Covering Katy likes to give back to our community,” Dennis Spellman, founder and editor-in-chief of Covering Katy said. “We are
excited that advertising on our website will help Faith West Academy raise money to do good things in Katy.” Each of the Run’s sponsors genuinely care about the community of Katy and want to be able to help those in the community who need it the most. Pat Wilson, The Katy News owner and publisher feels fortunate to be able to be a part of ministering to the needs of families in the area.
“The support from our community provides the funds to provide a ministry to children who are facing painful and difficult things in their lives,” Wilson said. “The Katy News wanted to be a part of this event to provide awareness to our community about these type of organizations, as well.” Another sponsor using their gifts to help ensure the Run is fun and safe is ER Katy. They are providing a staffed medical tent, an on-site ambulance and paramedics for the Run. Jason Brown, ER Katy general manger hopes the event raises awareness and funding for the wonderful causes the Run supports. “We are looking forward to meeting everyone who comes out to the Run,” Brown said, “and taking part in an event where the proceeds go toward such good causes!” The Run will be held on the Faith West Academy campus located at 2225 Porter Rd. Katy, TX 77493. Families can choose just how much running they would like to do. There will be a 5K run starting at 9 a.m.

and a 1K walk/run starting at 10 a.m. “I love the fact that we are keeping the community healthy and focusing on our Lord and Savior at the same time,” said State Farm Insurance Agent Matt Schomburg, who is a bronze sponsor for the Run. “This event will give all that come out an opportunity to bond with family and enjoy celebrating the season.” After the races, participants will be able to continue the fun with live music and great food generously provided by our sponsors. Bronze sponsor, State Representative John Zerwas hopes this event will allow people to get outdoors, exercise, and meet people all while supporting a cause greater than each of us. Belhaven University – Houston plans to have a team of runners come out to the event. Pete Deegan, Belhaven University director, said he enjoys running and if he is able to run for a cause it is even better. “We believe it’s our mission to go out into the world and serve,” Deegan said. “This is one venue that we are able to complete that mission.” Faith West is beyond thankful for the support of the Run, but is
even more excited to be a part of an event that brings families together to celebrate Christ. “I am excited to bring the community together for a fun family event and enjoy some of the earliest spring days,” Kirk Rightmire, Faith West public relations director said. “We hope everyone will join us to spend a few hours exercising, fellowshipping, and enjoying other family activities.” The Run will also be a debut event for the beautiful 32-acre campus of Faith West. The day will be nothing short of a good time with all of the fun planned. “We hope families in Katy will start a new Good Friday tradition by celebrating the Easter season with us at the Resurrection Run,” Joseph Menslage, Katy/Fort Bend Christian Magazines publisher and Katy Resurrection Run founder said. Facing the Social Media Challenge By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Lately, we’ve been hearing a lot about the effects of social media, which seem to range from making us jealous to making us suicidal. We’ve read about teens who see Instagram pictures of their happy and carefree friends, and then turn around and kill themselves because they don’t feel happy and carefree. We hear about adults sinking into depression because their lives don’t reflect the glamorous, world traveling, spouse-loving, Leave It To Beaver families they follow on Facebook. We remind ourselves and each other that pictures on social media are about people showing us what they want us to see, what they want us to believe about their lives, that Facebook truth isn’t real truth, that Instagram happiness isn’t true joy. But regardless of these reminders, we find ourselves believing wholeheartedly in the pictures we see before us. If you think it’s bad for adults who have the advantage of years and experience behind them, imagine what it’s like for teens. It’s especially hard for this age group to recognize the difference between social media image and hard, cold reality. When you’re raised on ten seasons of Keeping up with the Kardashians, you come to believe that image is everything, that a good selfie can change your world, and that without money, you’re nothing. That’s why you need to model the behavior you hope to see in your kids when it comes to what you post, how much time you spend online,
and how much value you place on other people’s posts and photos. For instance, aside from a few rookie mistakes I made when I first discovered Facebook, I quickly discovered that my posts are forever and that I need to be mindful of what I put out there for the world to see. My kids know that there are topics I’ll never talk about on social media because I consider those issues to be polarizing and divisive, and the world doesn’t need any more of that. They also know that I won’t post personal family matters, intimate details about my life, inappropriate photos, or anything that

true. But they don’t hesitate to share it on social media with just a quick click. This begs the question: Do you do the same thing? Do you share and forward articles, memes, and blogs that may or may not pass the litmus test for honesty? Kids are more likely to think twice about what they share if their parents do the same. Always coach your kids to check sources for validity and reliability before spreading what might otherwise be hurtful gossip and misinformation. Teach your kids that in social media - just like in life - they should always take the high road. They should never attack another person from a keyboard. They should never post a photo they wouldn’t mind their grandparents seeing. They should use proper English and good language that wouldn’t insult their English teacher or their preacher. They should use social media as a way to connect with friends and send positivity into the world. Always remind your kids that while online image doesn’t tell everything about a person, it still tells the world something. They should decide now what image they want to present and whether that image truly conveys who they are.
would embarrass them. As a result, they’ve mostly followed my lead. So while they’re inundated with a culture that preaches superficiality and materialism, they’re learning that what’s really important is treating social media responsibly and monitoring the message they send to the world about themselves. Be a thinker and a fact checker. A recent study conducted by Stanford University showed that most students are unable or unwilling to discern a factually accurate article from a biased or inaccurate one. Quite frankly, they just don’t want to take the time to find out if what they’re reading is

When Your Marriage Goes Through a Busy Season By Jordan Harrell A couple of days ago I was unbuckling Charlee when she looked up at me and said, “Daddy’s never coming back.” “What?” I was so confused. Then through tear-filled eyes, she whispered, “He’s always at work.” My heart broke into a million pieces. It was true. He had just worked a 90+ hour week and she was usually asleep by the time he got home. I promised her we would take him lunch the next day at school so she could see him. She nodded her head and said, “Okay. That sounds good.” Clark and I are in a hard season. We knew it was coming, but this kind of thing is hard to prepare for. You can say, “This is going to be hard” a million times but when life is actually BEING really hard, it’s tricky to know how to make it un-hard. Being a football coach’s wife has its plusses. You become a part of a network, a family of coaches and their wives, something of a club. You watch your husband spend thousands of hours pouring motivation and encouragement, wisdom and strength into young men that may or may not ever have a positive male presence in their lives again. You experience the high of a win as if you were actually padded up. But most days are not characterized by these things. Most days are just me. All by myself. Or scratch that. With three little

hoodlums that I have to take care of … all by myself. During the day, I am not thinking of the excitement of playoffs or the impact my husband is making on his players, but mostly how my 1-year-old keeps waking up at 5 am coughing and how my three-year-old won’t take a nap and whether or not I should call a therapist for my four-year-old or when I’m going to make dinner because I can’t afford not to cook. Again.
The grand things — the lessons and the friendships and the influence and the being-apart-of-something — they make it so worth it. But the daily grind blurs my vision sometimes. I know I am not the only woman (or man) with a spouse that has a
demanding job. Spouses of military, pastors, firefighters, police officers, lawyers … I see you. I know you understand this internal battle. Your spouse is doing something that matters, that demands so much of him, so much of her, so much of their soul, that sometimes it doesn’t feel like there’s anything left for you. And sometimes your leftover life, everything he has left behind, the slack that you’ve had to sacrificially pick up, the cross you didn’t necessarily choose to bear, demands so much of you, so much of your soul, that you don’t have much left for him either. I get you. I get you so much. You are both drained. You are both exhausted. You can only do so much. And sometimes you get used to life without that person. You adjust your schedule to fit the needs of the rest of you, not him, because that’s what survival looks like. Life goes on, incomplete, but it goes on. And sometimes, it’s harder when he’s there. Everyone has gotten into a routine. Expectations have been set based on the ones that are always there, so things get confusing when there are new expectations present. And you can creep into a really scary place. Wives become head of household. Husbands become outsiders in their own home. We have so been there. And while we were there, I learned a few things. Let him lead. Not because men are better than women at leading their families, but because in the depths of a man’s being, he craves respect. He needs it more than anything. So he has been at work all day where people look up to him and follow him and think he’s really good at what he does, and then he comes home and feels incompetent, like he can’t do anything right… where would you rather be? We show him respect and assure him that we trust him by letting him lead our family. Just because that’s the way you usually do it, doesn’t mean that’s the only way. “But Mom! You always let me!” “But what did Daddy say?” “He said no.” “Then the answer is no.” This is so hard. I tend to think I parent better because I parent the most, and therefore think I should be in charge

of all things parenting. But I cannot contradict his yeses and nos (and vice versa). You have to show a united front, lest your children get the idea that what Dad says doesn’t matter. Go to him. Be a part of his world. Go to practice. Go to the field house. (Obviously, this is specific to coaching… insert appropriate places here). Go to pep rallies. Take him lunch at school (if you don’t work). He can’t leave, but maybe you can. Even if he doesn’t say it, he needs to see his family. He needs to feel supported and cheered for and being present is a good way of showing that. Communicate. Text him. Email him. Send him pictures and videos of the kids throughout the day. Tell him you’re proud of him and you love him. Give him those compliments you’re too awkward to say in person. The beauty of this day and age is you can still talk to him even if you never see each other. Make your minutes precious. We are so bad at this. We are so dead at the end of the day that the only thing we want to do is nothing. But this is your ONE CHANCE to connect without having to order commands and instructions on who needs a bath and who needs a meal. Put away the technology. Stop looking at your phones. Make what little time you have together matter. I have learned that for me, this is a season of sacrifice and service, which is incredibly draining. And it’s so hard because I am naturally a selfish person, and the refining process is a very painful one. It’s like God is taking a huge torch (called football season) and burning away all the crust that has coated my heart (called this-life-is-all-about-me). Which also means my husband better not think this life is all about him, either. It goes both ways. We are both being refined. We are both learning what it looks like to be more like Jesus.

Prescriptions With a ‘Pinch of Love’ Hope Compounding Pharmacy Offers Patients MadeFrom-Scratch Medications Specific to Their Needs By Jessa McClure Vials, beakers and bubbling flasks are lined up along a countertop where staff of the Hope Compounding Pharmacy create medications that are tailored to specific patients and their differing needs. Not only does this small business provide a service that many community members need, but it is also giving hope to those who are looking for more than a bottle of pills. Experienced pharmacist, Maria AlvarezHernandez, R.Ph; Pharm.D, was interested in compounding from the beginning of her career. After graduating from the University of Houston, the pharmacist went to work for a compounding pharmacy in the Houston area. pharmacy. “I opened up a compounding pharmacy in Katy because I love the community and how supportive it is to small businesses,” she said. While “compounding” has become increasingly popular, the
pharmacist said some people still aren’t sure of what it is. “I like to think of compounding as an art within the pharmacy industry,” she said. “We are able to make an array of personalized medications, including capsules, suppositories, solutions, troches (sublingual), as well as injectables all from scratch.” She calls her pharmacy, Hope Compounding Pharmacy, because she and her team use this “from scratch” approach to meet the individual needs of those who have lost hope with onesize-fits-all medications. “My team and I work closely with doctors and patients to individualize each patient’s prescription, meeting their specific needs,” AlvarezHernandez said. “We strive to uphold the highest of standards and treat all patients as family.” When she opened her pharmacy, she knew she wanted to do more than just count pills. She wanted to truly help her patients have better lives. “I want to listen to their individual needs and create very personalized medication,” she said. “I wanted to create a business that would really show patients a [higher] level of care.” One way the pharmacist helps provide next level care is by creating

medications for autistic children who refuse to take their medicine. “In these situations, we can turn their medication into hard candies with their favorite flavors,” she said. Hope Compounding Pharmacy can also provide medication for those with sensitivities to preservatives, gluten, dye and other inactive ingredients found in some commercial medications. But the pharmacy doesn’t just treat the sniffles. It also offers treatments for andropause, bio-identical hormones, dermatology services, pain management services, pediatrics, sterile compounding, urology and gastroenterology services, veterinary services and help with weight loss. Alvarez-Hernandez has almost two decades of experience preparing these medications, and she said it is important for patients to do their homework when looking for a compounding pharmacy. “Just because you open a compounding pharmacy doesn’t mean you have extensive experience or knowledge,” she said. “That’s something patients should keep in mind when searching for the right place.” The pharmacist has used her skills and experience to help her pharmacy become the best locally-owned compounding pharmacy in the Katy area. Alvarez-Hernandez’s goal is to continue to grow Hope Compounding Pharmacy and hold the same values and standards. “I hope to always be in a position where I can best help my patients,” she said. “As I love telling my patients, every prescription is made with a pinch of love.” But it’s not just the patients who have been blessed by the pharmacy. Alvarez-Hernandez said she has felt God’s blessings every step of the way. “Every morning when I first walk [into the pharmacy], I see a picture
that a dear neighbor of mine drew for me. I read what it says out loud, ‘God bless this pharmacy,’” she said. The pharmacist wants to continue to seek God’s guidance and help the community not only as a medical professional, but also as a friend. “I take pride when I hear my patients tell me how I am always there to listen to them and understand their needs.”

Making An Impact By Caitlin Richards American Kids Athletics (AKA) is more than a day care and taekwondo training facility largely due to its owner and founder Leb Kemp. He has molded AKA into a place that allows kids to be kids while teaching them important life lessons. “Kids need direction,” Kemp said. “They need some type of focus on which way they are going in life. We try to instill that into our kids through our programs and taekwondo training.” AKA is a unique childcare facility that offers childcare programs for before and after school and the summer, along with a taekwondo component. Children can participate in only the childcare programs, only the taekwondo training or both. The before and after school program AKA offers is geared towards keeping children active. From the time children get off of school until their parents pick them up, they will be on the move. “We do all types of sports and games,” Kemp said. “Football, soccer, rock climbing, basketball, obstacle courses, and a favorite of course is dodge ball.” The 10,000 square foot facility offers lots of options for children to be active. This not only promotes a healthy lifestyle, but is also a positive outlet for the children’s energy.

“AKA is the place for kids who are traditionally bored and have parents who want them to be healthier and more fit,” Kemp said. “We are an alternative to a regular daycare where the kids just sit around do nothing.”
The facility has several large, open rooms filled with balls and games for the children to play with. The floors of the different rooms are especially designed for the children to be able to play four square, two square and basketball indoors. Another room offers, larger than life board games with life size connect four and a checkered board floor to play checkers and chess on. The facility also includes an indoor rock wall for children to challenge themselves with. Outside of the facility there are two playgrounds and lots of space for even more fun. AKA follows and exceeds the National Football League’s Play 60 campaign, which encourages children to be active for 60 minutes a day to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity. Children at AKA are active for 120 minutes a day just during their time at the before and after school program. Homework club is another component to the after school program where children can work on their studies with staff. They are able to complete their homework during this time to get a head for the weekday evening. Besides keeping the children active, AKA teaches children important life lessons backed by Christian principles through a daily bible study. After school, children are provided with a snack and the staff shares a short bible study lesson with them.

New Bottom Floor and A Healthy Husband By Amy Sharp Rob and Kathy Brown built their home in 1995. “It had served us well, though two boys and several dogs,” says Kathy. “But when Rob started to have health issues, we looked at downsizing. We quickly decided that was not for us. But this house needed help. The tile floor was starting to popup, and not much has been changed since 1995.” The Brown’s first floor remodel included flooring throughout, remolding the powder and laundry rooms, and gutting and redesigning the kitchen to make it more accessible. “We had made the choice to stay in the house, and it needed to accommodate us getting older. The new kitchen design allowed for space for a wheelchair or walker to get around, should we ever need it.” The three–Kathy, Teri, and interior designer Mary, worked together to evolve the design. “We removed some things that we found were to pricey to construct,” says Kathy. “When it was time to pick out cabinets, Teri brought samples over and we chose. We had a good idea of what granite we wanted, and Teri sent me to the granite yard she knew would have it. Mary and Teri worked extremely well together to produce a finished product we would like within our budget.” “Through the process, we had three or four workers at our home everyday. Every one of them was personable and affable. They did their work and they did it well. We had no trust issues. I would say the crew went above and beyond, actually. Rob was undergoing chemotherapy every three weeks at the time, and they were conscientious about the dust and cleanliness. They
blocked off areas with heavy plastic that were clean and quiet where Rob could rest. They changed our A/C filter every week. They just took the worry away for us. Teri checked in often and answered our texts and calls immediately. In the end, her time estimate was spot on.” “No when we walk into our home, we still can’t believe it. It’s phenomenal. It’s our home. A place we can live, put our feet up and have a dog. We love it. For me, 2017 is the year of a new bottom floor and a healthy husband. “We usually pick a short verse for the week and go over how it applies to their life,” Kemp said. “We believe the Christian values, whether they believe or not, are great principals to teach. It teaches the children good principals and values about life, family, making the right choices and doing the right thing.” The tenets of taekwondo are also incorporated into the childcare programs to promote discipline and respect. Throughout the program, they teach the children curiosity, integrity, perseverance, self-control and the will to never give up with the sports and games they play. “We move those martial arts values right into the childcare side,” Kemp said. “I hope it will impact them to become strong leaders and to stand up for themselves.” Children who wish to learn even more about these tenets can participate in the taekwondo training AKA offers. Instead of their physical activity consisting solely of the sports and games, the children can participate in taekwondo training with AKA’s certified staff. AKA is affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), which allows the children to participate in tournaments throughout the year, go to National’s and even the Junior Olympics.

In the evenings, multiple taekwondo training classes are offered for ages four and up. “We even have some families that train together,” Kemp said. “The entire family goes all the way through the training until they get their black belts together.” Kemp founded AKA after a similar program, but has made AKA his own because he has seen the benefits firsthand. He admits in his younger years he was very shy and not very outgoing. However, once he started taekwondo that all changed. “After going through taekwondo, I became a lot more confident in myself to where now I can stand in front of a thousand people and talk confidently,” Kemp said. “I think it really helped me and made me who
I am today.” Kemp hopes AKA is able to do that and so much more for the children that walk through AKA’s doors. He hopes to instill health, faith and values in the children all in the name of good fun. AKA opened its doors in 1993 and has impacted the lives of thousands of children. The lessons and values taught there have even come full circle with some of those children coming back as adults. “A lot of our kids come back to work for us,” Kemp said. “It is really neat and is my favorite part of the job. It is amazing to see what kind of impact AKA has made on their lives and then for them to continue that impact by investing in the younger generation.” To learn more about AKA and all they have to offer stop by 3211B N. Reaghan Velasquez By Caitlin Richards It all started when Reaghan Velasquez was only a 5th grader and she didn’t stop there. What started as a single action grew to a campaign to spread awareness about the failed spinal cord development condition called Spina Bifida. As a little girl with Spina Bifida, getting to the playground across a grassy, bumpy area was difficult to maneuver with a walker. Her and another classmate in a wheelchair were missing out on some of the fun at the playground with their friends. After talking with her teacher, they came up with the idea to install some type of pathway to make it easier. Her teacher prompted Reaghan to write a letter to the principal so she did. It wasn’t but two days later an asphalt sidewalk was laid. “This was kind of the start of the Yellow Out Campaign,” Reaghan said, “and the start of me wanting to understand more about my disability and what Spina Bifida was for me and for others.”

According to the Spina Bifida Association, every day about 8 babies born in the United States have Spina Bifida or a similar defect of the brain or spine. It is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. Reaghan started the Yellow Out Campaign to help raise awareness about Spina Bifida and other conditions, disabilities and illnesses. The cause of Spina Bifida is unclear but scientists believe that genetic and environmental factors act together to cause the condition. As she has gotten older, she has learned that there are various types of Spina Bifida that affect people differently. Some of the different types are Occult Spinal Dysraphism

(OSD), Spina Bifida Occulta, Meningocele, and Myelomeningocele (Meningomyelocele), also called Spina Bifida Cystica. The types vary so much that a person may never appear to have Spina Bifida because they only have occasional back pain. “Hopefully, more people in our community will become more involved and more familiar with what Spina Bifida is and who can be effected by this condition,” Reaghan said, “but also know to empower the condition and inspire others to live life no matter what obstacle they may face.” The next year, as a 6th grader, the Yellow Out Campaign started when Reaghan created the hashtag ‘I support Reaghan V’ and sold yellow

braided wristbands for others to wear. She asked everyone to take photos with the wristbands and then share them on social media using the hashtag to spread awareness. After talking with her counselor, they also established a day to have the whole school wear yellow to spread even more awareness. At least 60 people wore yellow to school and even more social media posts where shared. The following year Reaghan designed yellow t-shirts for others to wear

on the designated awareness day. This time Reaghan’s campaign caught the attention of the country music band Florida Georgia Line’s tour manager’s wife. “We became virtual friends,” Reaghan said. “She actually bought a shirt and continued to follow the campaign the following year. I even got to meet them at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last year because of her too.” The Houston Rockets even joined in with Yellow Out Campaign when Reaghan got to meet the team back in 2014. Face-to-face, Reaghan shared what the Yellow Out Campaign was all about with Dwight Howard and James Harden. “We were able to make it to a game and it was really fun,” Reaghan said. “It meant a lot to see how much people cared.” Celebrity chef Paula Dean purchased shirts as well to help spread awareness and support Reaghan. The Yellow Out Campaign has continued to grow over the years with the selling of more shirts and incorporating more disabilities and issues. This past year Reaghan focused on anti-bullying and food allergies, along with Spina Bifida since they all share the same awareness month. “It’s important to raise awareness because there are so many people out there facing the same challenges as me,” Reaghan said. “We all need to be familiar with these disabilities and issue; so, we can understand more about what others go through. You then have a wide mindset and that’s why it is important.” Reaghan hopes to not only inform others but also inspire others with

her story. Even with the everyday challenges she faces, Reaghan doesn’t let any of them stop her and hopes others don’t let their challenges stop them either. “It is going to be a challenge,” Reaghan said. “It is going to be an every day battle but you are going to have to ‘man up’ or ‘cowgirl up’ and just do you. Don’t let negativity, social media or anyone else try to stop you because of your disability.” As Reaghan’s mom, Renae Velasquez shared she is extremely proud of all of her accomplishments and the initiative she takes. The ambition Reaghan has she said is all on her own. “A lot of people think children do these accomplishments because they are really pushed and driven by their parents, but in her case she pushes us,” Renae said. “She is the brains behind it all. We are there to help her and motivate her.” “She is always thinking about how to make it bigger, how to expand it, and how to stretch the campaign’s reach to raise even more awareness,” Renae said. “Not just for Spina Bifida but other disabilities in general. Knowledge is power and that’s what it is about.” Besides establishing an awareness campaign, Reaghan is still a regular teenage girl. She is an excellent student involved in the college readiness course, AVID and an equestrian rider. She enjoys participating in western riding events like barrels and trails with her horse Satchel. Reaghan also participates in Texas Miss Amazing where she was named a Texas queen and represented Texas at the National Miss Amazing. She was even crowned a queen there as well. As a freshman in high school, Reaghan doesn’t have any set plans for her future but one thing is for sure – it will be bright.

Supreme Court Ruling Could Affect How Christian Counselors Talk About Sexuality By Jessa McClure As the country faces a changing of political hands in the White House, the Supreme Court has been handed an appeal that would reverse a lower-court ruling that now states that Christian counselors are prohibited from talking to teens about the biblical standard for sexuality. With the current ruling in place, counselors who operate under the umbrella of Christian values and principles, are prevented from helping clients overcome same-sex attractions, and must affirm homosexuality as a lifestyle option. If this case were to be overturned, it would allow licensed Christian counselors to speak about the scriptural principles on sexuality, without the threat of being brought before a licensing board. “Right now, under current licensing rules, if a client brings up the subject [of sexuality], we can talk freely to the client,” said Darin Griffiths, Administrative Director for South Texas STCH

Ministries, which staffs local Christian counseling centers. “But we do have to be careful to match the client’s required need. We can’t jump in and say, you’re wanting to know about scriptural principles of sexuality if they simply bring up the word sexuality.” Although Griffiths said that Christian counselors would have more freedom to speak about sexuality through a Christian perspective, he believes that counselors are probably already approaching these difficult subjects with their clients. “I think a lot of [Christian counselors] think, why do a job if you’re not going to do the right thing,” he said. But under current legislation, even the counselors who feel they are doing the right thing, fear retribution for their actions. If the Supreme Court grants the petition to appeal this law, it could mean big changes in freedom of religion cases and for ministries all over the country. While it seems there is support for this petition now, it had trouble gaining traction when it was brought to the Supreme Court several years ago. Griffiths hopes that the noise this appeal is creating now is a sign that
churches and conservative Christians are banning together to make change. “I would like to think that local churches are becoming more vocal, and becoming more outspoken than the liberal crowd,” he said. “Maybe Christians have finally had enough and are deciding that it’s not a godly attribute to stay quiet.” But even though the administrative director said he is pleased to see this movement, he also said that it is important for the teens and young adults going through crises of sexuality to find a safe environment to express their feelings. “I want to make sure that they find a non-judgmental zone where they can talk about their feelings without getting slammed with scriptural principles,” he said. “It’s not a time to beat up somebody like them. It’s a time to listen to them and slowly walk them through, not the acceptance of those feelings, but the process of carefully navigating the feelings they have.”

Indonesia is Calling By Pastor, Marcus Rumampuk Indonesia is the fifth largest country in the world with a population of 260,000,000. Out of that number, there are approximately 230,000,000 Muslims. That is why Indonesia is becoming the largest Muslim country in the world. Indonesia is an archipelago composed of 17,000 islands. Islam is the major religion among several other religions includes Christianity. Since Christianity is one of a minor religion, many times it is treated unfairly by the majority. It is very difficult to get permission to build a church building, and even worse than that there are many church buildings that already exist for years closed. That is why many Christian will have the service using public places such as hotel, restaurant, etc., with a very high cost. Since these are public places so it is used only temporary and they have to move periodically. It is even more difficult to have an open Revival Meeting. Sometimes the government will give permission to held public revival meeting, but the community of the major religion will try to stop it by force. In the midst of this situation, evangelism as the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus is still carried out in Indonesia using different tools

Following God’s Mission By Caitlin Richards River Pointe Church is one of the fastest growing and most influential churches in not only Fort Bend County, but the entire Houston area. Founder and Senior Pastor of River Pointe, Patrick Kelley, followed God’s mission and has been surprised with blessings he can hardly believe. “I’ll tell you what got us here is the actual truth of scripture that God uses the weak to show strength,” Kelley said. “I am the least likely person to ever pastor one of the fastest growing churches in the country. It is just one of those deals that it’s only by God.” Kelley grew up in Grapevine, Texas and didn’t step foot in a church until he was in 17 years old. He always believed he was a Christian by default, because he didn’t believe anything else. From a relationship built with a guy in Young Life, Kelley grew to know the Lord and began following the Lord’s mission for his life. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Lisa, and earning a bachelor’s degree
in business administration from the University of North Texas, he moved to Houston to sell wallpaper. While volunteering at his local church, Kelley began to hear God calling him in a different direction. “I just felt like God was saying this ministry thing is for you, which is weird because I was the first Christian in my family,” Kelley said. “Eventually, I said okay if God wants us to be in ministry he will make me do it. Sure enough, he did.” Kelley quit his full-time job as a wallpaper salesman and started seminary. He studied with the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary at a branch in Houston where he earned a Master of Divinity. Throughout seminary, he worked part-time at his local church and was offered a job full-time job with the church once he finished. He and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia for a few years where he gained even more ministerial experience. In 1996, the Kelley’s moved

back to Texas and started River Pointe Church. “When we came we never thought it would work quite frankly but we believed,” Kelley said. “It was one of those deals where we felt this weird movement from God calling us to come to Fort Bend County and start a church.” Kelley was considerably young in his ministerial career and thought the move to Fort Bend County would be just a learning experience God was taking him through to build character for whatever was next. “Although character was built, we never thought it would work as well as it has,” Kelley said. “It’s unexplainable and you can’t repeat it. It was one of those things where it was obvious that God wanted us to do it.” Kelley along with four other families started River Pointe Church out of the idea to be salt and light to the fast growing community of Fort Bend County. Their desire initially was to be ambassadors for Christ. For 20 years now, being ambassadors for Christ is what they have been and continue to be. “We have kept our focus on the lost community that is desperate without Jesus,” Kelley said. “When Jesus came to the Earth he seemed to hang out with the people that needed God. Not the people who have already found it. So at River Pointe we are trying to continue that on.” River Pointe does this by having minimal programming during the week and extra events. The idea is for members to be out in the community to be God’s presence in the PTA, youth sports teams, and their neighborhoods. “We don’t want them to be at church all the time gathered around with other Christians,” Kelley said. “We want them to be out there with other people who don’t know Christ.” This ideal of River Pointe is essentially what Kelley enjoys the most about his job. He has not forgotten what it is like to be outside of the Faith. Having interactions with individuals who share a similar past as
Kelley are his favorite. “I enjoy connecting with people that are asking really good questions that are authentic and sincere,” Kelley said. “I feel like I am the voice of our congregation, as the leader for the lost, that says don’t forget me.” Being able to do something eternally significant is the best part of the job for Kelley. When people share their testimonies and are baptized for the first time, that’s when Kelley sees the real difference River Pointe is making all for God’s glory. “I hope people learn from our story that the one thing God is wanting from all of us is our availability to be on mission for him,” Kelley said. “God didn’t join our team. We joined his. I think it is important for us to understand who is in charge and whose not.” Since 1996, River Pointe has grown to three locations in Missouri City, Richmond and West End. Kelley can’t wait to see what the Lord has planned for River Pointe in the next 20 years. “I am very grateful for the opportunity God has given me here,” Kelley said. “He definitely picked an underachiever to achieve great things for Him.” With 20 years under his belt, Kelley has learned a lot about his faith and what it means to be a leader. The biggest lesson God has taught him though, is there is no way River Pointe’s success was because of his works or the works of others. “It’s all a miracle of God,” Kelley said. “I never would’ve envisioned this success in terms of lives changed, growth and people coming to believe in Jesus as something I have done. It’s just being available to God and letting him work. It is a surprise to us all.”

Morning in America Again! By Gary Gillen You can feel it in the air. A new day is dawning and the entire country is optimistic, hopeful and happy. The election of Donald Trump as President has changed the country already. By the time you read this article he will be in the important first 100 days of his administration and its promise to put Americans back to work. As I write this column in mid-January we have seen the Electoral College cast their ballots and elect Trump. We have also seen the stock market jump “bigly” as Trump himself might say; proof that the markets like his election. And who are “the markets?” People, stockholders, businesses. Investors see a future that reduces taxes, reduces the onerous regulations that the anti-business Obama Administration dumped on us and lets business grow. With that growth will be more jobs, better jobs and higher wages. Our youth can learn the feeling of accomplishment that comes with responsibility. The December 2016 labor report was pitiful. 156,000 new jobs created BUT 41,000 were part time and 12,000 were government jobs. 23.5 million working-age men were still out of work. Over 5 million people held part time jobs Serving Katy, Houston, Brookshire, Fulshear, Sealy, Cypress & surrounding areas.

because they couldn’t find full time. The average work week in December was 34.3 hours thanks to the 35 hour work week in Obama care. Republicans in Congress have a rare opportunity, with control of the White House, Senate and House of Representatives, to create an environment that rewards work not victims. That takes away disincentives for job creation. That celebrates success instead of demonizing it. That unleashes the pent up energy of our great nation. It is important that they take this opportunity to do what they have promised. In our last issue I talked about ‘Our “participant ribbon” Nation’ and how our children are reacting to President Trumps’ election. This is a great opportunity for us to remember and them to learn the basics of how the world’s greatest democracy should work. Our system guarantees the rights of the minority to be heard but recognizes that the majority should rule. Republicans from Washington to Austin and Richmond can educate our youth on the importance of majority rule while protecting the minority’s right to be heard and participate in debate. A wise man once told me that “Government moves slowly.” As I get older I understand the beauty of that phrase. Government should not get ahead of the people’s understanding and acceptance of change. Forcing change down the throat of Americans as President Obama did with his rule
by executive order, in the words of Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, “…awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” And it is up to us and our children to remember that just because we have the right to do something does not mean it is the right thing to do. Peaceful protest is an American right. The important qualifier is “peaceful.” I hope those who voted against President Trump will give him the chance to show what he can do and his supporters will understand that our government was built on compromise. I did not say capitulation I said compromise. The minority has a right to be heard but not to dictate. Let’s join President Trump and Make America Great Again! Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control in Richmond. He is the only person in history to have served on both the Richmond City Commission and the Rosenberg City Council. He was the Chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County 2006-2007. He can be reached at Gary@GaryGillen.com

Katy Taste Fest Serving Fun and Food for a Good Cause Katy Taste Fest is set to serve up good food for a good cause. The festival is an event for foodies to experience fare from Katy’s diverse restaurant scene. Emphasis is on fun for the whole family with a variety of local restaurants, cooking demonstrations, a large kids zone, a dessert oasis, live entertainment, and a silent auction. The festival will debut at Villagio Town Center on March 4, 2017. Katy Taste Fest has partnered with several nonprofits that focus on abused, neglected, and abandoned children. Celebrating food, having fun, and giving back to the community are the primary goals for Katy Taste Fest,” said Cyril Thomas, the festival organizer. “The delectable food, cooking classes, and live entertainment are certainly vital pieces to the food festival, but partnering with local charities that focus on vulnerable children is what is important to me. We can make a difference celebrating what we enjoy – food, drinks, and fun. “
Katy Taste Fest supports several Katy non-profit groups, including Katy Cares, Helping Kids Ministry, Krause Children’s Center, and Armor of Hope Foundation. What Makes Our Community Strong By Alex Hunt Attorney at Law My name is Alex Hunt, and I am privileged to have been extended the opportunity write a regular column on legal issues affecting families in our community. I focus my practice on family law, helping individuals and families who are in need of a strong advocate get the guidance and support they deserve. I love our community—it’s where my wife and I are raising our daughters, where my daughters are attending school, and where I am privileged to work everyday with families from all walks of life. When it comes to the families I work with, both here in Katy and throughout the Houston area, there is one truth that universally applies, despite outward appearances: every family is unique and distinctive in its own way. Romans 12:6-8 tells us, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us…if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” Every family has its own gifts, its own challenges, its own private shortcomings and victories, and at some point in their lives, every member of every family struggles to find their place and purpose in our world. Everyday, families change, families grow, families mature, and families adapt to life’s changes and challenges. But those differences are what make our community so strong and what makes my work so worthwhile. Some families have stepparents, some have stepbrothers and stepsisters, some have adopted children, and some have foster siblings. All families are different, but what each has in common is simple: love. No matter what its makeup or structure or appearance, whether the parents are in one house or two, whether the kids are foster or adopted, family is love. In future columns, I look forward to continuing the conversation on a variety of legal issues affecting families in our community. Because
