In my job, I have had the privilege to meet many wonderful Christians. Unfortunately, I have noticed that many of them are extremely concerned about the downhill direction our nation, and overall, the world has gone. We seem to be living in an era where our entire sense of morality has reversed- an era in which what is evil is called good, and what is good is called evil. While watching our world degrade, I myself often get devoured by the hopelessness of it all. This pessimistic mindset traps many Christians, who fall into the misconception that all is lost. However, the Word of God reminds us that we were born for such a time like this. God is not taken by surprise by today’s transpiring events. He is not devising a strategy with his archangels planning His next move- instead, He is in total and complete control. Whether or not our nation will be saved and in doing so, remain a world leader, is not for us to decide. All we can do is remain faithful and complete the tasks the Lord sets before us. Be vigilant and pray without ceasing. But know this; God will fulfill His will whether or not we remain faithful. Who say, “Let Him make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it; And let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come to pass, that we may know it!” Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.” Isaiah 5:19-21 Joseph R. Menslage President/Publisher Katy Christian Magazine joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com

The ‘Chosen Generation’:

Students at Trinity Lutheran School find purpose in educational, cultural and volunteer opportunities By Jessa McClure As the first bell rings and children noisily head to classrooms where they’ll learn about the Mayflower’s maiden voyage and how to multiply two-digit numbers, they will also learn how much God loves them and how to use their gifts and abilities to not only further His kingdom, but to make a difference in their world. These children are the scholars of Trinity Lutheran School—a one-of-a-kind private institution that is situated below the towering Houston skyline on Houston Avenue in the heart of downtown. “We offer the parents of our community a place for their child to be educated in a caring, loving and safe environment just minutes from where they work,” said director of advancement at Trinity Lutheran, Lisa Jakel. Trinity Lutheran School first opened its doors 135 years ago,

and has been an integral part of the city’s history. “There’s an eighth-grader who attends the school now whose mother, grandmother and great-grandmother all attended the

school,” Jakel said. And because many of the children who attend Trinity Lutheran have such deep connections to the historic institution, the school has developed a sense of family among those who attend Trinity

NEVER

Lutheran and their parents. “We use every opportunity to get our families involved,” Jakel said. “We encourage them to volunteer to run booths, help out with fundraisers and even mentor new families—explaining how events go and what they need to know about our terminology.” One of the school’s biggest fundraisers to date, the Giddy-Up Gala, will take place on Saturday, February 21 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. It will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction that will help to raise money to not only replace outdated textbooks and build a new playground, but also to fulfill a one-to-one initiative. “This means computers for every child,” Jakel said. “We have a whole classroom set now, but this would be an [iPad] issued to that child to take home to turn in homework and to do research.” But giving their students more educational opportunities through new textbooks and technology isn’t the only thing faculty and staff are concerned with. They are also concerned with the hearts of the children they teach and mentor. They want them to not only find community amongst their fellow classmates, but they also want them to find a purpose outside of their school environment. “We try to involve them and expose them to things that are missions of the church, like volunteering,” the director of advancement said. “We got involved with Volunteer Houston this year. They do a huge St. Nicholas project where they build 8,000 backpacks with books in them for kids who come from Title I schools.” Jakel challenged the students to donate 135 books to the cause to celebrate the school’s 135th birthday. But to her surprise, the Trinity Lutheran scholars donated 335 books to children who Jakel said may not have a book to call their own.

“Then we went and passed the backpacks out and delivered them,” she said. “The hands-on approach and seeing the rewards of what they had done was very empowering here.” Not only are the children involved in helping those less fortunate in the community, but they have also taken an interest in the culture represented in downtown museums. “I’m actually training to be a docent at the Museum of Fine

Arts, so I can do tours,” Jakel said. “I brought [the children] to the Monet exhibit last month. I like seeing what kind of wonderful things Houston has to offer and find out how [our school and scholars] can get involved.” Because the school provides so many unique opportunities and experiences to the students who call it home, there is sometimes a waiting list to get in. “A lot of our students start here as babies and stay,” she said. “Our infant class is always full and our Pre-2 to Pre-4 classes are always borderline full. However, with K through eighth grade, there’s not a wait because as soon as the list starts to build, we consider whether or not to create another section.” While it might take some time to become a part of the Trinity Lutheran School family, it won’t take long for your child to become a part of the many athletic and extracurricular activities that also include a Christian-based afterschool program. “We also have a lot of visual and performing arts,” Jakel said. “We put on a full-fledged junior Broadway musical every year. This year it’s Bye Bye Birdie.” Although there is a lot to learn and enjoy at Trinity Lutheran, the director of advancement also wants the students to realize that they have a responsibility to leave a lasting legacy for the next generation. “Our theme to our students is that we are the chosen generation. We want to do something with what we have,” Jakel said. “It reminds our scholars that we’re part of a rich tradition. It pushes them to use their gifts and their talents to achieve change in their communities and in themselves.”

Former Rice University Admissions Officer to Lecture on Ways to Slash College Costs Workshop is free – but fills up quickly… Sugar Land, TX - An extremely popular lecture is being held again this year at University Branch Library for the parents of high school sophomores and juniors. The workshop, which is being offered without cost to attendees, will focus on little-known ways of getting grants and scholarships for college, regardless of GPA or how much money a family earns. The class will cover topics such as how to double or triple eligibility for scholarships (even if a family makes too much money to qualify for financial aid), the secret to attending a private college or university for less than the

price of a state school and the single biggest mistake that 9 out of 10 parents make when trying to figure out how to fund their child’s college education. This class is free and registration is required. Tickets are available on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Space is limited by the size of the room. It is being held at the University Branch Library located at 14010 University Blvd., in Sugar Land, on Thursday, April 23rd, from 7:00 to 8:30pm. ‘From the Inside Out’: Texas Foundation Helps to Start Movement in State Prisons that Could Change the Penal System Forever By Jessa McClure Grove Norwood was just a small business owner and Sunday school teacher when he felt a stirring in his heart for those incarcerated in Texas state prisons. The twinge of empathy, he realized later, was in fact a call from God to not only minister to those who are behind bars, but to start a movement inside these maximum security facilities that would bring peace and reconciliation to the men who need it most. The Foundation In 2009, Norwood started the Heart of Texas Foundation—a group that gave presentations and seminars about the power of forgiveness and reconciling with loved ones and those they’d hurt inside some of the state’s most dangerous prisons.

“As we began to [give these presentations] the word began to get out,” he said. “I then got a call from Angola, Louisiana with an invitation to come and visit the Louisiana State Penitentiary. That’s

where we discovered the tremendous difference between our prison systems as opposed to theirs.”

It was on this January 2011 trip to what was once called “America’s Bloodiest Prison” that Norwood and the members of the foundation realized that this old title was no longer true. The penitentiary was now one of the safest prisons in the country. But what caused this drastic change? What caused these violent criminals to put away their fists and learn to be peaceful?

The Inspiration The answer came from Senior Warden Burl Cain who had been overseeing the nearly 6,000 inmates for 15 years. “It was the Seminary Bible College,” he told Norwood and his colleagues. “We started the school during my very first year here. And from the very first year we began the school, our violence rate began to drop. Now, fifteen years later, the violence rate is down over 70 percent.” When Cain became the warden he realized that the “lifers”— those with life sentences or extremely long sentences, were living a hopeless existence. So, he built a relationship with the local New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and eventually helped to put a seminary right inside the maximum security prison for inmates to take classes. Cain said the graduates of the college had helped him in reducing violence and stopping fights before security had to get involved. They have taught classes and preached sermons. More than 25 churches have sprung up inside the prison at Angola and one of the churches is even a member of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastored by a “lifer,” who is a graduate of the Angola Seminary. “We discovered for ourselves the first we had ever seen of fundamental prison reform in ‘real time,’” Norwood said. “A prison’s entire culture had changed, and done so from the inside out. The rule book had changed at Angola, because the men who lived there changed. When the inmates changed, the security staff changed. As the security staff changed, the Warden’s rule book began to change. In my opinion, when the penal rule book changes, you have penal reform. That’s what prison systems have been seeking for hundreds of

years.” The Beginning of the Movement The Heart of Texas Foundation members came back to Texas with a renewed passion for replicating the same idea in Texas prisons. Norwood was especially affected by what he saw in Angola. The Angola Senior Warden, Burl Cain, told Norwood that he would help Norwood start a seminary in a Texas prison. Norwood took him at his word. And they became friends with a common vision.” “I had already been called by the Lord to go into prisons, but it was the Angola trip that totally transformed me with a new vision,” he said.

Norwood and his team began a partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and was allowed to focus on the Darrington Prison Unit because of its proximity to the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s J. Dalton Harvard School for Theological Studies in Houston. “I called the president’s office without ever having met him and asked for an appointment,” Norwood said. “I went up there and spoke with him and asked him to join us in this work. He didn’t hesitate in saying yes. He already knew about the Angola miracle and the fact that their seminary had made a transformation.” With the backing of the president, Governor Rick Perry, Senator John Whitmire, former Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, The Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and the Darrington Warden, the Heart of Texas Foundation opened the “Southwestern Seminary at Darrington” in the fall of 2011 with a class of 40 freshman. These men had been chosen from a pool of 600 applicants. Full-time faculty professors from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary campus in Houston were hired to come into the prison and teach on a daily basis. The Seminary “As the semesters wore on, another class of men, and then another, were bussed from prisons all over Texas to begin seminary. The population of the school swelled to nearly 180, where it is today,” Norwood said. “We now have four full classes in the seminary— freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Beginning in May, we will graduate our first Senior class of nearly 40 men. But that is just the beginning. After they graduate, they will be transferred to other April / May 2015

Texas prisons, as ‘Field Ministers.’” Norwood is quick to point out that these men are not just going to be sharing the Gospel with the men in other prisons. They will be counseling, mentoring, teaching, preaching and helping to reduce violence by acting as mediators between inmates and inmates, and between inmates and the security staff. “They will be a catalyst just as the disciples were,” he said. “They are can share the Gospel in a way that I cannot. They can help lead other prisoners to spiritual transformation and eventually moral rehabilitation. Our graduates are all lifers, and men with extremely long prison sentences, just like Angola’s. They will be ministering in our Texas prison system for many, many years after graduation, and ministering to men who will be getting out.” Since beginning this program four years ago, the Darrington Unit is reported to have seen a reduction in violence, and many report that a culture change within the prison has begun. Inmate Seminary students are being allowed to do new kinds of activities that have heretofore not been allowed. “As the men prove themselves to the prison system, we will see the Texas rule book change, just as it did at Angola,” Norwood said. The Future But although prisoners all over the state will be greatly affected by these field ministers, the true beneficiaries are the children of these incarcerated men, Norwood said. “Eight out of 10 children of [imprisoned] daddies are destined to go to prison like their parents,” he said. “That’s what we’re seeing impacted at Angola, and I think the same thing will start happening here in Texas.” Not only have lawmakers sat up and taken notice of what’s happening in Louisiana and at Darrington, but other prison systems in other states have also begun to realize the profound effect these seminaries have on the inmates and the penitentiaries as a whole. The movement has already begun to spread to Florida, West Virginia, Mississippi and Georgia, Norwood said. And little by little others are calling to see how they too can launch their own prison seminary. “Our vision is to help all of the states in the United States have just one seminary within one penitentiary that will be sending graduates out to other prisons in the state,” he said. “They just need one engine to be creating these equipped men.” The Heart of Texas Foundation, through the kind support of its donors and contributors, works hard to fund all of the school’s expenses. For the school to be constitutional, all funding comes from private sources. The seminary is offered on a voluntary basis to all male inmates who qualify, and accepts qualified applicants from all faiths, religions and denominations. Because the school has reached its desired capacity of nearly 200 full time students in the four college levels, the Heart of Texas Foundation is now working to secure a larger building for the school, and hoping to remodel an old gymnasium on the prison’s campus into a state-of-the-art facility with classrooms, libraries and a fellowship hall. “As long as the precious believers in Texas will continue to help us keep the bills paid, we will watch Texas lead the way in American prison systems with something that other states will see that they have to have. They are already noticing and asking, ‘how do we do this?’”

Jewish Roots By Iris Salmins Yeshua’s ( Jesus’s) time on earth was predicted by many Jewish prophets in the Tanakh (Old Testament).

Micha 5:2 - “But you, Beit-Lechem near Efrat, so small among the clans of Y’hudah, out of you will come forth to me the future ruler of Isra’el, whose origins are far in the past, back in ancient times.” Isaiah 53:12 - “Therefore I will assign him a share with the great, he will divide the spoil with the mighty, for having exposed himself to death and being counted among the sinners, while actually bearing the sin of many and interceding for the offenders.” Proverbs 30:4 - “Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has cupped the wind in the palms of his hands? Who has wrapped up the

waters in his cloak? Who established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!” These prophecies, taken out of the Complete Jewish Bible by David Stern, are just a few of the many Jewish prophecies about Yeshua ( Jesus). So, Yeshua, ( Jesus) was prophesied about in the Jewish Tanakh (Old Testament). These and other Jewish prophecies were the foundation of John the Baptist’s preaching. As we learned in the last issue of the magazine, there is no “J” sound in Hebrew, so no one actually called this Jewish admonisher, “John.” He would have been called Yochannan. Another logical, but rarely discussed fact is that he was not a member of First Baptist two blocks north of the Temple. He was not even a Baptist. “Baptist” means immersion. Immersion is a Jewish custom dating all the way back to the book of Leviticus and it is still being practiced by some groups of Jewish people. So next time you hear of someone being “Baptized,” you will know that they are participating a “Christian” custom with very Jewish roots. Iris Salmins is the owner of Sites by Iris. An online marketing company that offers website, search engine optimization, social media, blogging, newsletter and Google Alert creation, training and management and Life on the Wall a fine art oil painting restoration service.

The National Day of Prayer Ignites Fire on the Altar One event, two locations, covering three days. These are desperate days. World wide, nationally, in our cities and even in our homes. People are loosing hope. Politician’s have no answers. Congress has no solution. Where is God? Where are God’s people? What is God saying to us? “…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 God is inviting his people to humble themselves and pray. The invitation is an opportunity to lay down denominational differences, racial divides and to step over the generation gap. God promises that if his people do their part he will hear from heaven, will forgive our sins and heal our land. “For the fifth year in a row, we are seeking to fill the Merrell Center with prayers for revival and spiritual awakening in our city. Contemporary Christian radio station KSBJ is partnering with us to make it a truly city-wide event.” says Pastor Jim Leggett of Grace Fellowship, UMC. Come and pray. Come to the Merrell Center on May 7th and then come to the Epi anytime, day or night, through Saturday evening. You’ll be glad you came!

Pastor Profile: Randy Beck of Water’s Edge Church By Malisia Garcia Water’s Edge Community Church was founded by Pastor Randy Beck in 2007; they began to worship weekly in February 2008. Pastor Randy Beck accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in his heart as his lord and savior at the young at the age of 10. Pastor Beck reflects back on that day saying, “As the youngest of three, my older siblings had made that decision well before I was old enough to remember, so I struggled to surrender and say yes for a while. It was through this journey of struggling those months that the decision was anchored deep in my heart. When I finally said yes to the gift of His grace, I recall the overwhelming sense of being forgiven and knowing God’s peace in my life even as a child. I grew up in a family that was very involved and committed to the local church. My father served in volunteer roles from Bible Study Leader to leading worship in smaller churches. My mother was either at a piano or an organ every Sunday in my grade school years”.

in college as God opened door,” says Pastor Beck. So with that being said he accepted the call to preach the word of God.

The Calling to Preach Pastor Beck goes on to say, “I surrendered to the call to Gospel Ministry at the age of 16. I walked this path with many mentors, including my sister who surrendered to the ministry while a student at Baylor. My call to ministry was a very convicting call, similar to my conversion. I was given opportunity to use my gifts early and serve through a great student ministry in those formative years. This calling early in my life provided a blessing of knowing the path God desired without a large wandering through college years. It allowed me to pursue early opportunities in volunteering and paid roles while

Core Foundations Water’s Edge is a Southern Baptist Church, so doctrinally the church would be described as an evangelical church. In hopes the name helps to emphasize their focus more so in reaching the community than expressing their denomination. The church’s central mission is to Love God, Serve People and Share Christ. This is achieved uniquely in the church through values that drive Biblical Teaching, Authentic Community, Intentional Simplicity, Purposeful Stewardship and Strategic Missions. Pastor Beck believes the gauge for success is not numerical growth alone, but along four criteria in the lives of those connected at Water’s Edge Community Church – A Deepening Devotion, An Active Compassion, An Expanding Influence, and A Faith-Filled Life. Each of these give a measure to gauge real impact made over just worship services being offered. Pastor Becks goes on to say, “We were blessed to have great churches pour into us as ongoing sponsors early on, including Brazos Pointe Fellowship, Kingsland Baptist Church, and Houston’s First Baptist Church. Denominational support also provided resources from a state convention and a local association in San Felipe Baptist Association, which Randy serves currently as Moderator. Water’s Edge plays a prominent role in leading a collaboration of local churches across denominational lines in reaching the local area where Water’s Edge has been placed for the gospel. Fulshear and even Simonton in demonstrating and communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every man, woman and child in our given geography. Pastors are working currently at building a shared sermon series and collective target for ministry in our community for greater impact in the Kingdom than could be accomplished alone. More info at www.christtogetherfb.org, including a 31-day prayer app for our area.” Dynamic Support System Pastor Randy and Charny Beck married May 25, 1996. Pastor beck goes on to say that they meet in a youth group in high school and dated all through college. “Charny Beck is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and serves the church in more ways than could be described. Primarily, she gives wisdom and the capacity for care for so many, beyond the church and into the community. She contracts leading in various schools in resourcing children with special needs and the connection between a district and a family. Charny also offers services in private practice as a counselor with children, adolescents, and women. More info at www.charnybeck.com,” states Pastor Beck. They have four girls; Allyson is 15 and a freshman at Foster High School, who is said to be active on the JV Volleyball Team and eager to drive. Ashley is 14 and in eighth grade at Briscoe Junior High, active on Volleyball and Tennis Teams. Abby is 9 and in the third grade, and their youngest is Anna Kate is 7 and in first grade, both at Frost Elementary. When asked Pastor Back what was his favorite scripture he replied, “Galatians 1:10, English Standard Version (ESV) For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a

servant of Christ”. He begins to reflex on this scripture as to what it means to him and he replies, “I discovered this verse shortly after surrendering to the call of ministry. It reminded me then, and still to this day, that I serve God for His pleasure”. What a powerful word of God and to recall when entering ministry of any kind. It is for us to look to God, and not the approval man. After all it is through God and God alone that will allow us to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Dear Doctor: Do I Need the Shingles Vaccine? By Dr. Thomas Murphy Dear Doctor: I have been hearing a lot about shingles recently. Do I need the shingles vaccine? Dear Reader: I recommend all of my patients over the age of 50 be vaccinated for shingles. As one who experienced shingles in the past, I would gladly have accepted the vaccination had one been available to avoid the misery of shingles. The vaccine is 95-97 percent effective, and some patients might need to get it earlier than age 50. If you had the chicken pox as a child, then your body harbors the virus that may one day turn into shingles, which is a very painful skin condition that can last for weeks or months. Younger generations who have had the chicken pox vaccination will not need the shingles vaccine since this virus is not present in their bodies. Shingles can affect various parts of the body and can even affect the face and damage the eyes. The shingles vaccine may not be covered by your insurance. Talk to your physician about when you should take the shingles shot. And no, shingles is not contagious if you have had the chicken pox virus or vaccine.

So do yourself a favor and don’t hesitate, vaccinate.

Business Profile: Realty Mortgage Solutions Company’s founder talks about treating customers with respect, helping them find their dream home By Jessa McClure In the mid-nineties when oil prices were down and engineering work in the energy field were few and far between, Vince Orlando decided to get his real estate license and try his hand at investing in and selling homes. “Real estate is one of the more profitable businesses, especially if you’re an investor,” Orlando said. “I also thought that it would be interesting to learn about the business and help people while I was doing it.” He acquired his real estate license in 1996, and gained a lot of experience and knowledge about the business. Because of his vast expertise, he decided to go through the process of acquiring his loan officer license to be able to help potential homeowners acquire mortgages. Once he became a loan officer, he started his own business that he called Realty Mortgage Solutions. It is affiliated with Western Mortgage, but is an independent entity.

So, as engineering work fluctuated, Orlando was able to not only supplement his income with his work in the real estate and mortgage businesses, but he was also able to build his company and help those who had been turned down by other mortgage companies. “When I’m dealing with clients, I always think, ‘how would I want to be treated?’” Orlando said. “If I was on the other side I would want to be treated with respect and given lots of information.” The mortgage loan officer said that many large mortgage

companies will turn down customers without ever explaining why they were refused a loan. Orlando and his team take the time to explain the ins and outs of the loan process and how they can improve their chances of being accepted. “When you’re turned down by a [big company], they send you a letter saying you don’t qualify,” he said. “I will call you up and say, we looked at your credit report and there’s something on there that’s strange and might not be yours. If you get that off, we can get this loan going for you.” His company also acts as a mortgage broker, who works with more than 20 lenders. “We’ll look at the lenders’ requirements and we’ll say, this lender won’t do it, but you’ll fit in with this one,” Orlando said. “Then we work with them if they need help with their credit score or tell them how to make other changes.” Although getting his clients the best deal and the home of their dreams is a big part of Orlando’s business, his faith also plays a big

role. He even discusses his church leadership positions on his website’s biography page. “It gives me credibility that I’m a Christian,” he said. “I want people to know that. I want them to know that I will deal with them in a Christ-like manner.” Orlando believes so strongly in integrating his faith into his business that he has even acted as a mentor for students at Houston Baptist University, teaching them how to be Christians in the business world. “I talked to them about how to live by Christ’s example and try to handle every situation like Christ would,” he said. He has also worked on the bond committee for Katy Independent School District and as a state delegate to the Republican convention. He believes strongly in contributing to the community and being an example for his fellow man. “If you don’t mow the grass, it’s going to look bad and the weeds are going to take over,” he said. “It’s important to get involved [in the community] and keep everything on the right path.”

As I See It: What Are They Doing in Austin? By Gary Gillen As I sit here watching the Texas House of Representatives elect their Speaker I’m reminded that in the next 140 days these men and women will see constituents from their districts, delegations from business and many other interests while attending committee meetings to hear testimony on the seven thousand to nine thousand bills that will be introduced. It is a huge job and a short time during which to accomplish the business of Texas. But little will happen to those bills during the first weeks of the session. Texans have a strong mistrust of government. Our Constitution limits the speed at which bills move through the process to slow legislation down. In the House the only requirement is to pass a biennial budget. That budget is usually made public in the first week of the session. But that bill creating the budget is traditionally introduced by the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. This session begins without an Appropriations Chairman so HB/SB 1, traditionally the Bill number

of the budget, may not be filed immediately. It is expected that the Speaker of the House, Joe Straus, will have named committee chairs by the first week of February. Once a Chairman of the Appropriations Committee is named the budget will be the hot button issue of

the 84th Legislature. During the period that the Speaker is deciding on Chairmen for committees the House determines rules by which they will operate and settles many housekeeping issues. But, I believe the real reason for the delay in appointing committee chairs is to slow the process. With few committee chairmen in place there are fewer committees meeting. With fewer committees meeting less testimony is heard and fewer bills are considered in those committees. That means fewer bills make it to the calendar to be heard on the floor. But that may be best. With bills pushed farther back in the

session it is less likely that a frivolous bill will survive the gauntlet our legislature creates for them. With seven to nine thousand bills introduced each session the process is intended to make certain that every bill the legislature passes has been thoroughly considered and the public has had an opportunity to testify to the committee hearing it or has been able to express his or her opinion on the topic to their Representative and Senator. By spending time at the beginning of the session debating rules and carefully adopting procedures that insure the minority is heard and important issues facing Texas are addressed, the Legislature is doing what Texans want. By pushing committee appointments back a few weeks thereby moving bills later in the session, the process keeps our Legislature from “over-Legislating”. It may seem an inefficient (because it is) and a cumbersome (because it should be) way to make laws but these traditions and rules enable the Legislature to address the truly important issues we face without allowing enough time for the creation of laws we do not need. Still, it is a major sacrifice our representatives make when they are elected. And while we may not always agree with them we do owe them our respect and gratitude. I wish the US Congress followed the same schedule! Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control and Gillen Political Strategies in Richmond. He is the only person in history to have served on both the Richmond City Commission and the Rosenberg City Council. He was also the Chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County 2006-2007.

Honor at Home: The Five Shades of Shame By Pastor Cardenas Recently, Hollywood marketed a movie that became an instant success. It was based on a bestseller book called Fifty Shades of Grey. According to critics, the plot deals with sexual proclivities that push the boundaries of pain and pleasure. Besides financial gain, the absurd message targets women. It is designed to redefine abuse as a pleasurable adventure filled with glamor. Sadly, our society responded well to this movie by filling the theaters. No matter in what shade abuse is performed, it is still a shameful and sinful act. It is hard to believe that worldwide abuse to women is still permitted, endorsed, and even glamorized. All types of abuse to women come in general terms in what I called the five shades of shame. The first on the list is psychological abuse. This type of treatment sometimes goes on undetected in our society. This abuse happens in environments where women are treated like slaves. Their human right to decide on their own is taken away from them. Sometimes, this is done in a slow process gear to damage their potential to reach for their dreams. In this case, women are usually coerced into an unhealthy relationship that is male-dominated. In such a relationship, a woman feels hopeless and without dignity. She usually becomes

April / May 2015

co-dependent on the bully. She wrongly keeps the abuse as a hidden secret from family and friends in order to protect the victimizer. The second on the list is the physical abuse. In the recent NFL scandals, the public became aware of this abuse going on between famous players and their women partners. It was disgusting to see these strong athletes treating their women like rags. Ironically, some of these women even tried to protect these abusers from the authorities and the media. They tried hard to excuse their partners

misbehavior. This is usually the pattern of the victim until a major injury or death happens. The third type in these shameful shades is the sexual abuse. It is painful to consider that one out of eight women has experienced some type of sexual abuse before becoming an adult. Sometimes, the abuser is a member of her own family. Most women involved in prostitution usually report a tragic event, which threw them over the cliff to this awful lifestyle. This type of abuse to women is now epidemic. In human trafficking women are the main victims. Consequently, technology has opened a Pandora’s Box for women to be seen as explicit sexual objects willing to perform all type of shameful acts at a random price. The porn industry is making billions of dollars on the Internet because this phenomenal demand. Also, marketing agencies promote the “ sex appeal” of a woman in order to sell services and products. The fourth shameful act against women is the financial abuse. Many women work just as hard and sometimes harder than their husbands. Yet, at the end of her “better years”, some of them usually do not have the financial resources to keep them independent after retirement. In turn, they become vulnerable to the mercy of their family members or community. Some married women do not foresee

the damaging possibilities of a poorly planned retirement. In fact, we see more elderly women working in department stores in order to make ends meet. Finally, the fifth type of abuse against women is discrimination. The glass ceiling is still a reality for many women to this day around the world and even in developed nations. Many women are discriminated when it comes to job promotions and equality in salary. In addition, some countries used religion as a deterrent for the advancement of equality for women. Currently in some cultures, women are not allowed to drive, to vote or to get an education. Some do not even see daylight; they are aborted from their mother’s womb just because they are female babies. The abuse to women must be stopped. They are our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters and granddaughters. The proper treatment to women makes a strong community. It starts at home. In fact, God requires the husbands to treat their wives with respect as partners for life. It must continue in the messages from the pulpit, in the schools, in the justice system and in every place where women actively participate for the benefit of a better world. “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” - 1 Peter 3:7

Mission Bend Christian Academy Receives Sizable Donation from Local Motorcycle Group By Jessa McClure Dozens of children line the sidewalk in front of Mission Bend United Methodist Church, holding streamers and awaiting the arrival of a very special guest. In a moment, excited squeals ring out from the group as they hear the roar of 14 motorcycles rolling down the road toward the entrance of the church. The Deacons of Deadwood, a motorcycle group that prides themselves on being the most well-respected motorcycle group in Houston, has come to present Mission Bend Christian Academy with a sizable check to benefit a fund that will help give more students the chance to attend the school. “On Friday, February 6, the group showed up on their motorcycles in their motorcycle garb, sporting their jackets that said Deacons of Deadwood across the back,” said Jennifer Craft, who is Head of School at MBCA. “All the students were allowed to sit on a motorcycle and get their picture taken and talk to the gentlemen. They had a blast. We had a blast. It was wonderful.” It was at that time that the group presented the school with a

donation that will benefit the school’s Tree of Life Scholarship Fund. “The [scholarship fund] was started about 10 years ago when some business leaders in the community looked at the school and wanted to work out a way to support our school,” Craft said. “A lot of our families need financial assistance. So, these business men created this fund on behalf of the school and approach different businesses to support this fund.” Because the fund has been kept up over the years, the school can provide financial assistance to many of its students. “The amount given by the Deacons of Deadwood will help to fund up to six students next year,” Craft said. The academy is just one of 13 beneficiaries who receive funds from the organization who has given over $1 million since they began in 2002. Craft first became aware of the group when she met one of its members at a function she attended. The two began to talk about the Tree of Life Scholarship Fund, and the man told Craft that she could apply for a grant through the Deacons of Deadwood. “The organization wanted to give back to the community, so they became a 501 (c) 3 non-profit with the ability to give grants,” Craft said. “They do a large auction charity event each year. All of the proceeds of that go to children and youth activities across the area.”

Although this is the first year MBCA has applied and received a grant from the Deacons of Deadwood, Craft said the school will now apply annually to be a beneficiary of the generous organization. “We were so excited to be one of their recipients this year,” she said. Craft hopes to use donations from organizations like the Deacons of

Deadwood to eventually support 50 percent of the school on financial assistance. “Right now, we support about 25 to 35 percent of our school,” she said. “In the future we hope to reach out to other families who, because of financial reasons, might not be able to attend the school. Therefore, our school will grow and we will reap the benefits of the gifts that every family brings to the school.” The Head of School said creating a sense of belonging for those in every socio-economic situation is as important to MBCA as math and reading. “We usually have around 100 students enrolled at one time,” Craft said. “We’re not huge, but we’re growing. We feel very much like family here. That’s the word that we hear from all of our parents and people that come in. They tell us how comfortable it feels here and how much they feel like they’re part of a family.”

Local Christian School Highlights Jude Churchwell Classification: 1st Grade Southminster School

Drove Churchwell Classification: 3rd Grade Southminster School

Jude and Drove are two brave and generous elementary school students. At least once a year the boys approach the school administration to arrange a charity drive. In 2013 they collected shoes for Soles for Souls. In 2014 they collected hats, mittens, boots, coats, etc. for Hearts 4 Hope. The boys feel “so fortunate” to have the life they do they want to give back to those that “do not have money to buy clothes and shoes”. When not helping others, Drove enjoys drawing. His favorite subject in school is Science because he has opportunities to “do lots of interesting things” like “making clay volcanoes and watching them erupt”. Drove wants to be a Scientist when he grows up. Drove’s favorite story from the bible is the story of the lost sheep and the Shepard. Drove says he can depend of the Lord to get him out of “tight situations” like the sheep in the story. Jude enjoys helping people and “giving away all my toys”. His favorite subjects in school are Math and Spelling. He also enjoys homework! When Jude grows up he wants to be a horseback rider. Jude’s favorite story from the bible is the story of “Jesus dying on the cross for our sins”. Both boys thank God for their blessed life and their “angels”, their Grandma and Rex, their pet guinea pig.

James Foley

Reagan Thieme

Classification: 5th Grade Oakland Elementary

Classification: 6th Grade Faith West Academy

James is a straight A student in the Gifted and Talented program at Oakland Elementary. James continues his excellence through the martial arts and scouting. James has trained and is an assistant instructor at Lone Star Karate since 2009 under Shawn Vicknair and just earned his 1st Kyu rank(one away from Black Belt). He also has trained in boxing for over a year to compliment his martial arts. James is in his final year of cub scouts and will be joining boy scouts this coming year. James and his parents attend St. Teresa Catholic Church as well.

Sixth grader Reagan Thieme shares several interests in common with her classmates; volleyball, softball, and cheerleading. But there is a unique relationship she has with her old brother, ninth grader Cameron, which sets her apart. Because siblings grow up in the same household, their relationships are often strained or the cohesiveness of the family become evident. In the case of Reagan and Cameron it is reflected in the latter of these dynamics. Cameron and Reagan have a close-knit relationship, as best of friends, rather than rivaling family members. According to Reagan, the secret to their sibling peace, is “Cameron isn’t mean,” making the difference in their connection together. Likewise, Cameron says the success of their brother/sister relationship is spending time with each other.

It’s All In Your Head Women should feel healthy, vibrant and strong throughout their adult lives. If you've been told, “it's all in your head” or “learn to live with it,” read on.

Maggie's story Maggie came to Hotze Health & Wellness Center after suffering for seven years from depression and fatigue, which developed after giving birth to her second child. She also had a lifelong history of cold hands and feet and sensitivity to cold. She was experiencing significant hair loss, was constipated and had severe muscle aches. Even after sleep, Maggie never felt rested.

Maggie's treatment

Maggie had experienced recurrent sinus infections and headaches over the past seven years, for which she had taken antibiotics. She also complained of recurrent abdominal cramping and bloating associated with the ingestion of sugar and bread products, which she craved. Since her last pregnancy, Maggie's menstrual cycles had been irregular. She had gained 30 pounds over the past seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire, and felt that she was in a “brain fog.”

Maggie's name could easily be erased from her chart and replaced with the names of thousands of other women in midlife whom we have evaluated. Maggie's doctor made her feel that she was a hypochondriac and emotionally inadequate. We explained to her that her symptoms were very common to women in her age group and were easily treated.

Maggie had sought the care of numerous physicians. They told her that she was “depressed” and prescribed antidepressants. A friend of hers, who was a patient at Hotze Health & Wellness Center, told her that there was a natural alternative treatment for her problems, so Maggie came to us for an evaluation.

She had an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body's ability to use thyroid hormones. It was the change in her hormones that triggered her allergy disorder, which in turn led to recurrent sinus infections. The antibiotics that she had taken for her infections also killed normal bacteria in her body and allowed yeast problems to occur.

If you are like Maggie and you want to get your life back, then contact us today at

Maggie was prescribed natural bioidentical hormones, natural thyroid supplementation, and was treated for allergies with sublingual immunizing drops given under the tongue daily. Within two months, Maggie's depression and fatigue had disappeared. She was able to discontinue her antidepressants. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!” April / May 2015

New Organization Brings Hope to Families in the Fulshear-Simonton Area By Jessa McClure A single mom fumbles in her purse for another dollar to pay for a gallon of milk. A former energy industry executive scours the want ads for something to pay the bills after being laid off. A young boy wonders if he’ll ever be able to get his grades up and break the cycle of poverty in his family. For all of these people and many more, there will soon be an organization that can help not only with emergency needs, but with needs that go beyond the moment. It’s called Family Hope and it is the brainchild of the pastors of 14 churches in the Fulshear-Simonton area who felt as though there was a great need for an organization that could not only give people immediate assistance, but that would help to create stronger, healthier families in the community. “About a year ago, the one food shelf in the area closed its doors. It left a great void,” said Family Hope Launch Director and Pastor of New Creation Lutheran Church, Dale Olson. “The pastors got together and said we really need an organization that can help take

care of some of these difficulties in people’s lives.” The group brainstormed about what this organization should look like and what it would do. “Our vision is transforming hurting people into healthy families through the love of God,” Olson said. “We want to bring the faith and business communities together and assist people with emergency

needs like food, but most importantly, we want to equip people for a better life through counseling and tutoring services.” Olson said Family Hope has two points of focus: compassion and transformation. “This a place where they can receive compassion if they’re going through a tough time, whatever their economic level,” he said. “We’ll also walk with people in making some healthy choices to create healthy families.” Right now, Olson and the other pastors are raising funds to make their vision a reality. One way they are doing this is through a gala event on March 27, put on by their parent organization—Fulshear Outreach & Development. “There will be a meal, a silent auction and a live auction and a program featuring live music,” he said. “It will be held at the Fulshear United Methodist Church and will hopefully raise some funds to begin this organization.”

Some of the businesses partnering with Family Hope have already begun helping launch the organization by donating baskets for the silent auction and buying tickets to the gala. Olson said the organization will need all the help they can get as their community grows. “Fort Bend County is the fastest growing county in the US,” he said. “We are banding together because we know in the coming months and years, those poverty issues and difficulty issues will remain with us as the area begins to grow. We need these kind of organizations to help the community.” The pastor and those working with him hope to help people living in the Fulshear-Simonton area to break the cycle of poverty and make better choices for their future. “We feel that the love of God is something that spurs us on to fight for justice and be able to care for the people,” Olson said. The launch director hopes that in the coming year, Family Hope will be able to fill immediate needs, equip people through counseling and tutoring, and to be a connecting rod to other organizations who

are working to make the Fulshear-Simonton area a better place. “Mother Theresa said, ‘the greatest evil is the lack of love, charity and an indifference toward one’s neighbor,’” he said. “Our goal is to care for our neighbors, and by caring for our neighbors, strengthen our communities.”
