Inspired

to Higher Education by Olivia Cane

Cambridge dictionary defines the word inspiration as, “someone or something that give you ideas for doing something.” Its root meaning is to “breath into.” In the case of Chevella Sampson, a hairstylist of ten years, that breath of inspiration came to her during a deeply moving spiritual transformation. “The Lord placed on my heart the urge to dig deeper,” she explained. “He called on me to study His word.” At the time, she didn’t know how God wanted her to do that. “Yet I was inspired to go to church one morning,” Chevella explains. “there I met a Belhaven University representative who told me that no matter what your course of study, Belhaven will teach you the word of Christ. I could actually feel God speaking to me.” “I was nervous. I hadn’t been in school for 25 years,” continues Chevella. “Would I be accepted How was I going to manage books, tuition, financial aid? But I wanted to learn more about the Bible, and I knew in my heart that the Christ-based curriculum at Belhaven was the right place for me. Then I called a Belhaven University counselor. It was like she completed my thoughts! All my fears were instantly put to rest. The staff made it so easy. Financial aid was available to me even before God promised me it would be. I

was overjoyed – and most importantly, I knew this was where I belonged.” Today, Chevella has been at Belhaven for two years. “Everybody seems like family They know your name and they want you to succeed. My professors have an open-door policy. If you need guidance, guidance will be provided to you. But it’s the Biblical perspective that’s super important. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how much you’ve got it together –or even if you don’t have it together. Having a Biblical perspective in your education not only allows you to expand your career, it fulfills a purpose in life no matter what talent you have. Talent is no good without purpose. And your purpose is to know the word of Christ.” For Houston residents who want to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree quickly and affordably, Belhaven University is the answer to a quality adult studies program. Both degree programs are tailored to the needs of busy working adults. Belhaven students graduate with the tools they need to stay competitive in today’s global economy, and they do it with all the love and support of the word of God. “Belhaven is everything you expect in a God-inspired learning environment,” Chevella says. “You will feel so at home here.”

“Everybody seems like ”

family.

An Automobile Service Experience By Caitlin Richards It’s obvious Auto Check Elite’s owner Matthew Roayaee has a passion for cars when you walk into his full-service repair shop. The lobby area is filled with collectible, antique tin metal signs embellishing the walls from top to bottom and the waiting area chairs are replicas of Ricaro racing seats. “I love cars,” Matthew said. “I live and breathe cars.” Matthew gets his passion for cars from his father who was a mechanical engineer with General Motors. After growing up around cars and learning as much as he could about them, Matthew got into the auto repair business. After owning and selling a couple of other Auto Check shops, Matthew decided to come to Katy and build what he believes is his masterpiece. “I’ve built a playground,” Matthew said. “All of our team members and I come to work to play. The Auto Check Elite Team (left to right): Khrystina Shivers, Alaan Martinez, Santiago Diaz, AJ shivers. Mo Naderi, Matthew Roayaee, Trey Brendle, Will Evers, Sergio Perfetti, Nicolas Barreto, Mina Rezaie . Not pictured: Jobey Hobbs, Alexander Strawder and Yovany Rivas. Everyday is a fun day at our playground!” When Matthew started planning Auto Check equipment. Elite, he had the opportunity to create and design the shop exactly how the team wanted it to be. “I went to every equipment manufacturer of our choice and told them to consider our shop as a showcase for their products,” Matthew explained. “I wanted them to sell me the best of the best. They did and now we have the equipment no other mechanic shop has.” Matthew wanted to custom design his shop to create a workplace like no other. Most of the equipment was fabricated uniquely for Auto Check Elite’s shop, whether it was for restructuring it to fit a certain space or making it a certain color. Auto Check Elite goes above and beyond for their customers. The business prides itself on being able to offer fast and quality service to its customers at a fair and reasonable price. A special service Auto Check Elite offers their customers is a complementary loaner vehicle while their car is in service. It is a simple switch of keys and customers are on their way. “It is very simple,” Matthew said. “We value our customers’ time and understand they are busy people and have other things to do. We will switch keys again once services are performed, their car is washed and has been test driven.” Auto Check Elite will even deliver a customer’s car to their driveway

if needed or allow them to pick up their vehicle after hours. Matthew takes customer service a step further by including his personal cell phone number on his business card. “I am not worried about giving my cell phone number out to my customers,” Mat-thew said. “There have been times when I have been able to help a customer by just talking them through a few steps and saving them from a big hassle.”

Since April 1, 2016, Auto Check Elite has been serving the people of Katy. Auto Check Elite is here to make auto repair easy for their customers by using their talents and resources. “We have been able to help our community and will continue to do so for years to come,” Matthew said. “We can’t fix all the cars in the whole world but at least we can do our best for our community, within our service area. I can tell you this is the most convenient auto repair facility you can go to from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out.” The atmosphere of the shop radiates the values of Auto Check Elite. Matthew hand selected team members who are at the top of their trade and put the customer first every time. The team members are what he considers the key to his success. “Customers feel it as soon as they walk in,” Matthew said. “They see smiles and a welcoming waiting area, hear upbeat music playing, everything is clean, and every-body is happy to be there. Our team members go above and beyond to help.” As Auto Check Elite approaches its first year anniversary, the number one thing they are looking forward to is continuing to serve the Katy community with excel-lent customer service and quality work. Internally,

Matthew hopes to continue to develop his team members by helping them be the best they can be. “I am growing future shop owners under my wings,” Matthew said. “My mission and goal is to teach them everything I know and show them everything I do so they can open a store of their own one day. All I want is to leave a legacy.” Matthew believes he can only do so much with his store, but by empowering his team members he is serving the people of Katy in a very unique way. Overall, the foundation of Auto Check Elite’s business is integrity and a job done right. “We are in the people business,” Matthew said. “We’ve got to take care of other people. We want to make their life easier and take one worry off their shoulders. Cars happen to be what we love. So, that’s the worry we are going to take care of.” For more information about Auto Check Elite, visit www.autocheckelite.com or just give Matthew a call on his cell at 713-560-7080 or at the office at 281-644-9045.

Katy Mayoral Candidates The mayoral ballot for the Katy city election has been set. Hill Adams, an insurance executive; Chuck Brawner, retired police chief of the Spring Branch Independent School District; and Steve Jurovic, a retired author are on the ballot. Katy Christian Magazine reached out to Adams and Brawner, and asked each to share a short bio and to share with our readers they are running for Mayor. Early Voting begins on April 24, 2017. Election Day is May 6 , 2017. For additional election information, including a list of voting locations, visit harrisvotes.com in Harris County or fortbendcountytx.gov/elections in Fort Bend County.

Hill Adams My wife Carol and I met at the University of Houston and married upon graduation in 1980. We moved to Katy 25 years ago with our children Anne and Robert. From the beginning we have been very active in our community through schools, church, scouts, local charities, public service, and more. I have been a commercial insurance broker for over 35 years. Owning my business, I understand hard work and taking care of the people who count on you. I have served on boards including; the Harris County Republican Party Executive Committee, the Independent Insurance Agents Legislative Committee, the Katy Area

Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Government Relations Committee, and Katy Christian Ministries Strategic Planning Committee. I ran for City Council in 2002 and was honored to have the citizens of Ward A elect me to be their representative for 6 years. “I’m running for Mayor now because I love the city of Katy. I love Katy’s people, our neighborhoods, our sensibilities about honor and hard work, and special sense of history – a history that my family has embraced and worked hard to preserve and protect. I am just as committed to Katy’s future. My business background, years on City Council, experience with legislative negotiations and relationships with many other elected officials are some of the assets I will bring to City Hall as Mayor. Among many important issues facing our citizens, there are several that will receive my immediate attention: Spending - In the last four years government spending is up almost 50%. I want to restore fiscal conservatism to our city government. Property Tax Relief - Even with tiny tax rate reductions, the city is collecting more property tax from us because the value of our property has increased. Commercial development in the City of Katy could allow a reduction in the actual taxes citizens pay. I will reduce property taxes. Public Safety – Building a second fire station to protect citizens and businesses on our south side has been a priority since 2012. We voted on it years ago, but the city hasn’t even broken ground. Our government is required to ensure the safety of every citizen. I will make sure every citizen can count on it. Drainage – The city’s comprehensive drainage plan is over 20 years Continued on page 15

old and many citizens suffered great loss in the 2016 flood. Another flood could happen any time but little has been done to mitigate our flooding issues except to commission a new plan. This is little comfort for those who are still rebuilding. I will make sure the city is doing everything possible to prevent flooding and to help those areas hardest hit by the 2016 flood. Transparency - This applies to financial standards set by the State Comptroller and more. The activity of all council, committee and board meetings should be posted online. Council meetings should also be recorded and available on the website so everyone can see our government at work. We need public meetings throughout the year to allow citizens to meet with council members and department heads to learn about current and pending permits, projects, and plans and to share what is important to them. As mayor, I want to focus on thoughtful growth and to keep the spirit of compassion and generosity alive in Katy. I will put our citizens first and take advantage of every opportunity to improve and sustain the quality of life that brought so many of us here. Our citizens deserve this, and I humbly ask for your vote to make it happen. You can contact me and find much more information on my website: www.hilladams.com . Thank you for your consideration.

Chuck Brawner My name is Chuck Brawner. I am a pro-life Christian conservative running to be the next Mayor of Katy and I ask for your vote. My wife Marcy and I attend church weekly at Parkway Fellowship. Our loving and spiritual community is second to none. We care about the futures of our families, our children. We care about a family’s ability to succeed. We care about access to a great education for our children. We certainly love to cheer on our sons and daughters in our unmatched sports programs and we love to let our kids play in our neighborhoods because we know we are safe here. My platform will work to enhance what we know about Katy - that the City of Katy is a loving and spiritual community to live and raise a family and that our quality of life is second to none. We must keep Katy safe. I have the right background as a former law The Bible Seminary 2655 S Mason Rd Katy, TX 77450

enforcement officer and President of a statewide law enforcement organization. As Katy Mayor Pro Tem and a City Council Member, I was integral in changing our fire department from a part-time to a full-time fire department and was instrumental in enhancing the communication equipment for our police department. Breaking ground on the new fire station has been a priority. After a setback due to the 2016 flooding, the city is breaking ground on the new fire station this Spring with another in the works. Mobility projects must be continued to meet the needs of our citizens and alleviate traffic congestion created by growth outside of the city. We must fully leverage the Metro revenues generated by in-city sales tax. These funds are used by the city on the majority of our roadway projects. This will help improve traffic congestion. As Mayor, I will begin the next phase of studying the recommendation to mitigate future flooding so we avoid the devastating flood of 2016. Through my work with the State in emergency management and my lifetime law enforcement career, I have the political and community relationships to find solutions to our flooding issues and I will work tirelessly to make it happen for our city. We must continue to productively manage growth. As Mayor Pro Tem for the last three years, I have been a part of facilitating healthy growth that benefits our families and our community. This growth has afforded homeowners a reduction in their tax rate and our senior citizens a reduction in their tax rate and increases in their homestead exemption. We have a AAA credit rating – a rarity - and we must keep it that way. The City is required by Council resolution to save 50% of the city budget, but we have expanded those reserves to cover city projects that are necessary to track with our growth so there is no additional tax burden to our taxpayers. We must continue to plan and save smartly, which is to the benefit of our citizens. I am running for Mayor because I care about the future of Katy, because I am excited about where we are headed, and because I have a path to get us there. As Mayor, I will focus on our public safety, on managing our growth, on mitigating flooding, on increasing our mobility while fiercely protecting our private property rights and on those things that increase the quality of life for our Katy families and their children. I will embrace our heritage and legacy and use it to inspire our path forward. We want excellence and deserve excellence. I ask for your vote for Mayor. It would be my honor to serve you and our great city.

Overcoming the Summer Slide By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein There is a slide that is associated with summer, and it has nothing do with fun. The summer slide refers to the dip kids tend to make during the summer months when they are away from school and the daily habits of studying and learning. I wouldn’t call it an epidemic, but it is by all means real, and for many kids, the summer slide can be devastating. Who’s hit hardest? Interestingly, the summer slide can affect a wide range of students in various ways. 1. Kids who already struggle in school. These students depend on the daily practice and a designed curriculum to continually progress and avoid the backward slip. When the routine and learning expectations are removed, their mind relaxes and material they previously knew slips away, sometimes as if they have never learned it. If you’ve ever tried to learn another language, you know what happens when you don’t practice it regularly. The same happens with all students, but these kids are hit especially hard. 2. Kids who are making steady progress toward a goal. If your kids know where they’re headed and what they want to see for themselves in the future, they’ve likely counted on teachers, coaches, school counselors,

and the other aspects of school life to help them march steadily toward their goals. Remove those support systems, and kids oftentimes lose their focus and sometimes even their drive.

Safe At Home with a Professional Team Second To None Seniors prefer to remain as independent as possible and the team at Encore Caregivers makes that happen. Every day in the Houston Metro area, our skilled caregivers are at work in homes, retirement communities, assisted living facilities and hospitals helping seniors through companionship, homemaking services and personal care. The client, client’s family and staff collaborate to develop an Individualized Service Plan customized for each client. We provide just the amount of care that is needed. Does your loved one need: • Transportation to a doctor’s appointment, the grocery store or barber shop? • Someone to make a light meal or snack? • An extra hand with light housekeeping? • Conversation or socialization? • Help grooming and dressing? • Help with oral hygiene? • Assistance bathing and showering? • Someone to stand-by or assist with walking? Our caregivers are there to help. Encore Caregivers wants you to know: You may have seen the recent news video of the private caregiver being physically and verbally abusive to her elderly client. It was shocking and reprehensible. Fact: A caregiver hired from an unlicensed agency or hired privately represents an unknown that can pose significant financial and safety risks to your family. Could they be violent? Could they become injured, file for workman’s compensation and expose your family to a rude financial awakening? Yes, yes and yes. A caregiver hired from Encore Caregivers that is licensed, bonded, & insured represents a known quantity because the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services has policies and procedures in place to identify and certify each and every Certified Nurse’s Assistant or Home Health Aid placed in someone’s home.

Before an Encore Caregivers’ team member can step into your home, he or she must complete a rigorous regimen of: • • • • • • • • •

Drug test Competency Test Credential discovery Personal background check Professional background check Criminal background check State Employee Misconduct Registry check Thorough interview process Comprehensive orientation

Add to those points the fact that Encore Caregivers in-house nursing staff supervises and monitors all care provided and you are looking at safe, organized, professional, quality inhome care. Don’t forget: Encore Caregivers’ team members are our employees -- that means that all workers’ compensation and tax concerns – anything that an employer has to worry about – is squarely on our shoulders. 3. Kids who are doing great in school. Imagine you have committed to healthy eating and for 9 months you’ve adopted and maintained a healthier lifestyle. You’ve lost weight and are feeling great, and you think you’ve got this beat. Then you depart on a two-month cruise, replete with 24-hour buffets. What are the chances you’ll maintain true to your committed healthy path? And how much work will you have to do to get back on that path whey you return? 4. Kids who seem aimless or without a view of the big picture. These kids complete assignments or study for the short term - the grade or the GPA - versus studying for lifelong learning. They count on external forces such as due dates, reminders from others, and direction given by adults to outline their days and keep them moving forward. During the summer when these expectations disappear, so does their progress.

If any of these sound like your children, I encourage you to seek out opportunities to engage and educate your children year-round. Heads up though, kids have a hard time accepting their parents as teachers and tend to balk at doing work during the summer months. That’s why I recommend a great tutor or summer program catered to your children’s needs and interests. Both serve unique purposes. Tutors can work with your children according to the specific needs and learning styles. They can be a refreshing change from the traditional classroom and build relationships with your children that are supportive and encouraging. Summer programs offer another way to learn: collectively, as part of a social group, and usually in a hands-on, fun way that makes learning seem less like academics and more like exploration and discovery. Both of these methods of staying fresh work wonders and turn the summer slide into a huge summer step in the right direction. Looking for personal tutors and help with keeping your kids on track? Check out Rebecca Deurlein’s Teenager Success 101 for a special summer session that meets your kids wherever they are. Go to www.teenagersuccess101.com for more information! Be Unique By Caitlin Richards Nashville native, Wendy Severance is using her natural gifts and life experiences to make a difference in the lives of teenage girls in Fort Bend. With her new Christian based business, Be Unique, Wendy is helping teenage girls to become young women who are confident, secure and have a positive direction for their life. “With the advancements today in technology and social media, there is a disheartening depletion of self worth and confidence in our young teenage girls,” Wendy said. “We want every girl to understand her value and self worth and know she is fearfully and wonderfully made through Christ for great purpose.” The concept of the Be Unique programs is for girls to gain self-confidence in who they are as individuals from the inside out. “We are all created unique with great purpose,” Wendy said. “These programs bring an awareness to the unique qualities that already exist in each young lady and are the characteristics that set her apart from others.” In 2014, Wendy began piecing together Christian-based concepts to assist teenage girls that would then become Be Unique. Now attending her final year at Fort Bend Christian Academy, her daughter Emily, has been an instrumental part in helping create the programs. “It has absolutely been a team effort,” Wendy said. “I would not have been able to fully comprehend the struggles of young girls in today’s time having not had her input on these issues.” The Be Unique programs are designed to help ease the social transition that girls face from middle school through the high school years - commonly known as the ‘drama years’. Placing an emphasis on family is a priority, Emily shared, because your family is who loves you and wants the best for you. Emily believes those relationships should be cherished and respected, above any other. “For teenage girls and their families, the struggle is real,” Wendy said. “These experiences can affect them for the rest of their lives.” Be Unique offers an Inner Beauty, personal development program,

as well as an Outer Beauty, personal appearance program. Together, they are designed to create a well-rounded and sophisticated young lady who shines from the inside out and offers her the best possible start for a joyful and prosperous life. “It is not a cotillion program,” Wendy explained. “It’s far, far more. There is no program around like this one. It was a passion of mine to create a program that would help all young girls find what makes them unique through Christ. I want them to understand their importance and self worth and that compromising ones values in order to fit in socially is not Continued on page 22

necessary in order to achieve a joyful and happy life!” The Inner Beauty program is designed to specifically bring out the unique qualities that already exist in each young lady. It creates a self-awareness that assists in strengthening their relationship with Christ as well as forming stronger, more respectful relationships within the family unit. The classes in the Inner Beauty program help form a positive direction in life for the girls, cover issues in social media, and promote a healthy lifestyle with good nutritional habits. Overall, through the Inner Beauty program, the girls will experience an increase in self-confidence, create a positive self-image, define boundaries to protect their values and gain an understanding of God’s plan for their life. The Outer Beauty personal appearance program teaches the girls technical applications in visual poise and body movement, proper instruction in skincare, facial symmetry and daytime makeup application. The program

will cultivate a look and behavior of self-confidence that includes posture and walking, dinning, and wardrobe selection. The Outer Beauty program even covers the theory of color through combinations of complimentary colors. The fun and interactive program is perfect for girls learning how to dress and discover their own personal style. Wendy confesses it has taken her lifetime of experience and education, coupled with her daughter’s personal experiences, to form the Be Unique Programs. It has been a passion of hers to create something that would help Continued on page 25

not only her daughter, but all young girls. Looking back on the things she’s done in her life, Wendy realized that all of her life experiences have really been necessary for her in creating the Be Unique Programs. “I think it is important for everyone to find their passion, something they love and are good at doing, and figure out a way to make a living doing it – that’s ultimately how to use our natural God given gifts,” Wendy said. “It’s through this process, we find great purpose.”

Previously the owner and director of Academy of Models and Talent in Nashville, Tennessee, Wendy has worked in various areas of training including high fashion print work and runway modeling as well as training for film, documentary and music video production. She has worked in pageant coaching, judging and also trained the 1995 Miss Teen Houston. The Be Unique programs are offered year round for teenage girls. For the first time this summer, Be Unique will offer summer camp options. The summer camps are designed to be fun and interactive and include the following topics: Inner Beauty, Color Me Beautiful, Daytime Makeup, Visual Poise, and Health and Nutrition. Registration is now open online at www.beuniquetoday.com and may fill quickly as class size is kept to a minimum in order to meet the needs of each young lady. What is the Big Deal About Easter?

By Pastor Richard Harris Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church

What first comes to your mind when you hear the word “Easter”? When I was a kid I thought Easter meant pastel clothes, bunnies, plastic eggs and chocolate, or melted chocolate if you grew up in Houston. As a kid I was always confused about the connection between bunnies and eggs. Bunnies don’t lay eggs. And why is the big bunny hiding the eggs? The truth is that Easter is Easter because 2,000 years ago Jesus rose from the grave. I became a Christian as a young adult. During my first year as a Christian, I learned the significance of both Christmas and Easter for my new faith and life in Jesus. However, everyone I knew, both Christians and non-Christians, was so much more excited about Christmas. I often wondered why Easter did not get the same excitement and buildup as Christmas each year? Easter ought to be a big deal for Christians because it highlights both Jesus’ death and His resurrection, and without His death and resurrection there is no Christianity. Think for a moment about the good news of Easter and all that Easter proves to be true.

First, Easter proves that there is a God and that the God of the Bible is the one true God. Second, Easter proves that Jesus really is the divine Son of God. Jesus claimed to be God’s Son and that the one true God of the Bible would raise Him from the dead three days after the Roman Continued on page 29

authorities executed Him. The Easter resurrection was God’s way of substantiating Jesus’ claims. Third, Easter proves that all who have faith in Jesus are justified before God. The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 4:25 that Jesus “was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” Jesus’ death is the atoning sacrifice that fully purchases salvation for all who place their faith and trust in Him alone as Savior. Fourth, Easter proves that followers of Jesus are no longer in bondage and slavery to their sins. In Romans 6:4 Paul wrote, “We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Jesus’ resurrection on the first Easter morning proves that through faith in Jesus we have His help and power to resist temptation to sin and to walk in newness of life. Finally, Easter proves that all true followers of Jesus have a sure and certain eternity with God in the new heaven and the new earth. Remember what Jesus said in John 14:2 – 3, “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also.” God’s raising Jesus from the dead on the first Easter is confirmation of all of this. Again, why do so many Americans, including many Christians, think so little of Easter compared to other seasons of the year? I think Eugene Peterson is on to something in his book Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places when he writes: “The do-it-yourself, self-help culture of North America has so April / May 2017

thoroughly permeated our imaginations that we don’t give much sustained attention to the biggest thing of all, resurrection. And the reason we don’t give much attention to it is because the resurrection is not something we can use or manipulate or control or improve on. It is interesting that the world has had very little success in commercializing Easter, turning it into a commodity, the way it has Christmas. If we can’t, as we say, ‘’get a handle on it’ and use it, we soon lose interest. But resurrection is not available for our use; it is exclusively God’s operation.” The ridiculously good news of Easter is a challenge to most Americans because it is all about what God has done to save sinners. And God’s salvation is one of grace. Grace is completely and utterly undeserved and unearned by us. This is hard for us to understand. If we are honest, I think we want to feel that we have contributed to, and at least partially earned, everything we have, including our relationship with God. However, the God of the Bible offers salvation that is by grace alone. He offers salvation that is done for us. We do not live lives of moral perfection. Jesus does it for us. We do not die the death that our sins deserve. Jesus does it for us. In Ephesians 2 Paul describes our condition apart from a relationship with God as being “dead in [our] transgressions.” We do not raise ourselves from this spiritual grave. God raises us from the dead to new life in Christ because of what Jesus has done for us. This is why Easter is such a big deal!

The Power of Imperfection By Jordan Harrell I’m a laid-back perfectionist. Seriously, it’s a thing. I am completely at peace going out in public looking like I just got electrocuted in the shower, fully clothed, while cutting my hair, but I won’t even attempt (fill-in-theblank) if there’s a small chance of failure. I don’t know if that’s being a perfectionist or just a coward. Being the type of person that has to excel at everything, while also being a stay-at-home-mom, while also being a terrible homemaker (i.e. the current state of my kitchen) is like putting lots of bad ingredients into a blender and turning it on without a lid. It didn’t take long for my stuff to splash everywhere. When I got married, I realized very quickly that I wasn’t the perfect wife. It was shocking to no one but me. Much to my dismay, I wasn’t as good of a cook as I’d planned on being; I wasn’t as good of a hostess as I’d planned on being; I wasn’t as good of a decorator as I’d planned on being; I wasn’t as good of a housekeeper as I’d planned on being. Then came kids, and all the grand ideas that would win me “Best Mom Ever” and my children “Best Raised Children Ever” started bubbling up within me. I just knew I’d craft the Holy Spirit right into them, install an incredibly spiritual and relaxing bedtime routine, and make whimsical memories, guys, every single day, all while maintaining an adorably

immaculate home. So, when I never really got around to doing a daily craft and bedtime almost always ended with “GET. IN. BED. RIGHT. NOW.” through gritted teeth and all the most prominent memories seemed to involve tantrums or poop and my home was hardly adorable and never clean, the perfectionist in me (whom I lovingly refer to as Satan) started to whisper things… Continued on page 33

Every other mom is doing more than you. And doing it better They won’t turn out okay if you keep this up. He couldn’t possibly love someone that can’t get their crap together. You are ruining this. You are SO not enough. About a bajillion years ago, God chose Gideon to save the Israelites. In the story (Judges 6-8), Gideon is not so sure God chose the right person for the job and asks God to prove it… twice (Ahem. YES. That would be me.). Once Gideon realizes that God’s not messin’ around, he gathers up as many men as he can find to go defeat the Midianites’ army of 135,000. He’s feeling a little meager at 32,000, but trusts that God is with him and heads out anyway. He’s already an underdog. This is already destined to be a Cinderella story. Gideon’s army is like the Butler of the Bible. But GUESS WHAT?? God sees that underdog army and tells him, “You have TOO MANY men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her…” get rid of some. There are too many, he says. The victory might be mistaken for a triumph of your own strength, he says. GET RID OF SOME, he says. You want to see me work? You want to know I’m here? You want to know how much I love you and am for you. Get rid of some. Get them out of my way. Gideon sheds 22,000 men. He is now down to 10,000 soldiers to battle the Midianites. So, get this. God says, listen … “There are still too many men.” It is still possible that victory could mistakenly be attributed to your army. GET RID OF SOME MORE. So, Gideon siphons them down to a mere three hundred.

God tells Gideon to take THREE HUNDRED men to battle against an army of ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND. 300 to 135,000. As a former sixth-grade math teacher, I can reduce like a boss: that is ONE to every 450.

Sometimes, when I look at my three children and my husband, they seem like 135,000 Midianites, which would explain the mess in my living room. I feel the need to muster all my own strength, do more, try harder, power through. I plan and plot ways to guarantee victory, guarantee perfection in my children, in my marriage, but then the Lord gently reminds me,

Stop striving. Stop working so hard to do this all on your own. Trust me to do my job. Continued on page 34

In the end, when this is all said and done, I want you to be able to see MY glory. Not yours. SO, GET RID OF SOME. GET OUT OF MY WAY. That part about not being enough? It’s true. I’m absolutely not enough. I can’t do it all. God intended it that way. He created me. He purposefully placed gaps, imperfections, in me so that he might come fill them, if I’d only let him. My imperfection magnifies his perfection. My incompleteness points to his completeness. My insufficiencies create space for him to work. I can use them as a megaphone to shout,

“My God covers it all, fills it all, does it all, because I tried and I can’t. Anything good that happens here, that was not me, that was Him.” Mamas, if you’re floundering and flailing, if you’re gasping for air, stop trying to fill your own gaps by doing more and trying harder. You can’t. You won’t fit. Just get out of his way and make space for Him. Then, he can display his power. Then, you can find his peace. Raising a family, one that makes it to the other side loving the Lord and liking each other, that would take much more than a clean house and a perfect mom. That would take a miracle. A miracle. Like if an army of 300 defeated 135,000. Something like that. Jordan and her husband Clark live in North Richland Hills, TX with their three kids, ages 4, 3, and 1. What Is Vascular Disease? Is It Different From Heart Disease? Carotid artery disease, Peripheral Arterial Disease and Aortic Aneurysms are the three most dangerous – non cardiac – vascular diseases that affects millions of Americans. These three are certainly the ones that produce most of the deaths and/or long term disabilities. Carotid artery disease affects the main arteries to the brain. These arteries can develop a buildup of plaque, also known as hardening of the arteries. When the buildup becomes severe, the patient may suffer from a stroke which can result in permanent damage of the brain and can also be fatal. However with screening, this disease can be diagnosed and treated, thus reducing the number of patients who will suffer lifelong disabilities or death. PAD or peripheral arterial disease is a blockage that can occur in both upper and lower extremities. This is usually caused from atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a hardening and narrowing of the arteries which can lead to debilitating problems and even amputation of the extremities. Patients with PAD are about 3 times more likely to develop heart disease or other vascular disease. Aortic aneurysm is a result of thinning of the aortic vessel wall which creates a bulge in the body’s main artery. Over time, this budge becomes overstretched and weakens the wall. If left untreated the aneurysm will grow larger and eventually rupture, which is usually fatal. Most aneurysm go undetected until they rupture. UT Physicians offers a complimentary test that checks these three main areas where vascular disease can occur. Risk factors for vascular disease include: • Over 40 with diabetes • Over 50 with certain risk factors including: - High blood pressure - High cholesterol - Family history of vascular disease include stroke or heart attack • Over 60 To schedule your free vascular screening at our Katy office, please contact: 713-486-DARE (3273). Furniture Store Creates Loyal Customer Base with Honest Customer Service By Jessa McClure In 1989, Don Akerman, Jr. opened OfficeMakers Inc. in Katy, off of Beltway 8. His children, son Thomas and daughter Amanda, grew up watching their father not only sell the best furniture at the best price, but also lend a helping hand to customers whenever they needed it. This attention to customer service and quality products has allowed OfficeMakers to be a soughtafter company in the furniture world. Fortune 500 companies and government entities are just some of the high-profile customers the business has served over the last 28 years. But despite its impressive client list, the company prides itself on being a locally and family-owned company. In fact, it’s their customer service that has allowed them to land clients from other parts of the country. “I had a woman from a company in Washington, DC call me and say she was having trouble getting anyone to come to her

office and do the layout [of her cubicles] for her. Everyone wanted her to come to them,” Thomas Akerman said. “I said, I happen to have this software that will allow me to go in and design it for you right now.” Akerman said the woman could have taken the design to a local distributor, but because he helped her and gave her a reasonable price, she ended up ordering all of her office furniture from him. “[Businesses] are becoming more and more transparent and commoditized. It’s not just about what we offer anymore, it’s about what sets us apart. It really just comes down to customer service and product knowledge,” he said. The Akermans treat their customers the way they would want to be treated, and that means telling them about price breaks even when they aren’t obligated to do so. “We support The Cooperative Purchasing Network {TCPN}, an Continued on page 45

so I mentioned that they could qualify for the program and they signed up,” he said. “Now, they order chairs from me on a regular basis just because I was the first one who pointed out that they could buy those same chairs on a contract.” Akerman said a lot of the bigger chain stores won’t always tell their customers about price breaks like the TCPN program because it effects their bottom line. But the business owner said he’s found that being upfront about these programs creates loyal customers, not a dwindling profit margin. OfficeMakers’ personal customer service has made them a well-known business in the area, and they’re happy to serve the Katy area. “We’re very glad to have moved here because it’s become our home,” Akerman said. “We’re excited to see all of the development coming up around us, and we’re hoping to be a part of the community for a very long time.”

organization that offers deep discounts to government agencies, nonprofits, churches, and educational facilities,” he said. “I’m always amazed to find that churches are completely unaware that they qualify for these contracts. It gives them huge discounts on great quality.” The OfficeMakers’ owner said that churches often come to the store looking to peruse the company’s used furniture inventory, and end up coming away with a TCPN catalog, thanks to Akerman and his staff. “An Arch Diocese in Ohio contacted us because they were looking at a price on a chair. Kingdom Racing Brings Gospel, Love of Christ to Motorsports Fans By Jessa McClure An 11-year-old George del Canto watched in awe as dozens of race cars at the Indianapolis 500 whipped past him on the speedway. His father had pulled some strings to get him onto the starting grid to the biggest event in racing, and the two shared memories that lasted for years to come. “Walking the grid at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was amazing,” del Canto said. “That was it. I was hooked for life.” But while the Chicago native loved the sport and the times he shared with his father, he never thought that he’d be anything more than a fan. He pursued a career in finance and international trade, and moved on with his life. He became consumed by his business pursuits and forgot about his passions, including motor racing. “I essentially forgot about the sport, but God did not forget,” he said. “God puts desires deep in your heart and they are there for a purpose. He can use them when the timing is right.” The time for del Canto started about 15 years ago when he was living in London, working in the financial markets. “My business world and deals had fallen apart. My wife and kids were

estranged because I was only pursuing the bigger, better deal—more money. More prestige. More power,” he said. “I ended up completely lost.” But thanks to his wife, who had accepted the Lord a couple of years before, he began attending church. He began hearing the gospel and scripture in a new way, and he felt convicted. Continued on page 49

“I had nowhere to hide. I couldn’t make any excuses. I knew that I was without a purpose or salvation.” It wasn’t long after feeling this enormous weight of his poor choices that del Canto gave his life to Jesus. He surrendered to Him and he began to restore his relationships. “We moved from London to Houston because some of the sermons I was listening to were over the internet, and were given by Dr. Ed Young, Second Baptist Church,” he said. While del Canto and his wife searched for a house in the Houston area, they were taken with one home in particular. When they got back in the realtor’s car to talk about making an offer, they looked up and saw a sign that said, Welcome to Second Baptist Church, Dr. Ed Young Pastor. “I looked up and said, ‘Oh my gosh. There’s something going on here,” he said. So del Canto and his family settled in and he founded a small business that he ran out of his home. He attended church groups, Bible studies and services regularly, and after several years, realized that God had truly blessed his family in this new place. “I prayed what I say is the most dangerous prayer a Christian can pray. I said, ‘God, you’ve done so much for me, what can I do for you?’” he said. “If you pray that prayer, you better strap in and buckle down because you’re going on the ride of a lifetime.”

It was shortly after he prayed this “dangerous” prayer that he took his 12-year-old son to the Indianapolis 500. He hadn’t seen the race in 20 years, but he was happy to pass on the family tradition. “We got home and precisely at that time I was meeting with a prayer group of guys,” he said. “We were reading a book called ‘Awaken the Leader Within’ by Bill Perkins. Perkins says that if you’re a real believer, then you must have a blow-your-socks-off vision for God’s Kingdom.” Del Canto’s group decided they would come back to their next meeting with one of these grand ideas for furthering the kingdom. “I told my wife about it, and said I had no idea what I was going to tell the guys,” he said. “She said, ‘Why don’t you pray about it?’ So, I said, ‘Lord, give me a vision.’ Nothing. I prayed the same prayer the next day. Nothing. By the third day I forgot about it.” He went about his week, and the night before the breakfast meeting with his prayer group his wife asked what he was going to tell them. “I looked at her and said, ‘I’m going to build an Indy car team to deliver God’s word through motorsports.’ She looked at me and said, ‘George, you’d be perfect for that.’” Although this statement had rolled out of his mouth with boldness, del Canto couldn’t believe what he’d said. He had no connections to the racing world, and he didn’t know the first thing about starting a racing team. He told his prayer group about his idea, and they all agreed that it was a great Continued on page 50

idea, but he didn’t think anything would come of it. “But over the next week, I felt a burden on my heart,” he said. “I started having visions of the tens of thousands of people who go to these motor sports races to have a little bit of excitement and to forget their problems, and it pained me to think that these spectators might be lost.” Del Canto decided to seek counsel from his pastor, who pointed at the door, and said “go forth.” While the business man was excited about the prospect of beginning this new journey, he was a little intimidated. “I walked out the door [of the church] that day in July of 2005, and here we are in 2017, and we’re going to run our tenth consecutive Indianapolis 500 race on May 28,” he said. “We have run three full Indy car seasons, we have won multiple races, and we’ve impacted tens of thousands of people with the word of God.” One of the ways Kingdom Racing shares the love of Christ with the people around the country is through the sport itself. “To compete at the highest level of motorsports and honor God, we have to deliver a top performer,” he said. “We have to be prepared and equipped in such a way that when we run, we can win.” He wants racing fans to take notice when they see a Kingdom Racing car pulling to the front of the pack. “We want them to say, ‘Who are those guys? It’s impossible that these guys are doing this,” del Canto said. “Yes, it is impossible, but with the Lord, all things are possible.” The racing team also has two other ways in which they reach the unchurched. One, is through the Miles of Smiles program that works with local ministries or centers who nominate guests who are going through a particularly difficult time. This could be at-risk children, abused women, or families dealing with addiction, incarceration or illness. “We invite these individuals to the track for a special day,” del Canto said. “We treat them like rock stars. We give them a VIP tour, a meet and

greet with the drivers, take them to the suites, and most importantly, we listen to their stories and we share our story.” Del Canto and his team have met more than 2000 people through this program, and they not only stay in touch with them, but they connect them with local pastors or church members to encourage them to join a church and follow the path that God has laid before them. Kingdom Racing also employs another ministry at their racing events that comes in the form of what the founder calls an ambassadors program. “They go out into the infields and grandstands at race events with a ‘hero card,’ which is like an enlarged baseball card. It has pictures of the drivers and cars as well as a gospel tract,” del Canto said. “The Ambassadors walk around and say, ‘Do you want a hero card?’ People usually say yes, and then we can say, ‘We’re Kingdom Racing, do you know what we’re all about? We’re here for a higher purpose.’” He said that the connections they make through their ministries are where they really see the fruit of their labor. “Sure it’s exciting to be at the tracks,” he said. “But I’ll be at the track and looking at the cars going around the turns, and I’ll turn to my colleagues and look up in the stands and say, ‘That’s where the real action is—impacting these people’s lives.’” Del Canto believes that this is the field God has given him to sow, and now he is doing all he can to work the soil. The founder believes that the field might be growing to include other motor sports series, but he doesn’t want to over plan and get ahead of what God’s doing. “We’ve learned over the past 10 years to go where God sends,” he said. “We show up, tell our story and then watch God go to work and open doors.”

Unrest, Dry Bones & Life By Stephanie Leggett Do you feel it? A dissatisfaction or shifting? Maybe it’s a spiritual shakedown. There is restlessness in the air. Like a mother about to give birth who cannot get comfortable. There seems to be an anticipation and discomfort in the spiritual realm. I hear that others feel it as well. I hear pastors discussing this change in the air, and prayer warriors from many different congregations wondering at its meaning. I don’t pretend to understand what is happening, but if there is about to be a monumental spiritual shakedown of some kind I do know that I want to be standing among believers, in the presence of my God. God has set believers apart. In Matthew 16:16 Peter has just announced his revelation that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus responds by saying that he will build his church on that foundation of faith and truth. Then in Matthew 16:19 Jesus repeats what is said in Isaiah 22:22 when he says “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Jesus had all authority. He gave it to Peter, the disciples, and thereby to all who call on His name. He gave this authority to us. We are a royal priesthood. We, as Christians, are a chosen people. (1 Peter 2:9) And now we stand at the precipice of something. What is coming? I

don’t know. Revival? Awakening? Perhaps. But how can we prepare when we don’t know what we are waiting for? We simply do what we can do. We can know the Father. We can know the Son and we can know the Spirit. We can hear the Word of God, read the Word of God and sing the Word of God. Continued on page 54

In preparation we can persist in the place of prayer much like Ezekiel did in Ezekiel chapter 37. Do you remember the story; Ezekiel in the valley of dry bones? God commands Ezekiel to prophesy over the bones and over their breath. He was obedient and spoke to the bones telling them to come to life and they did! But he had to prophesy two times. His prayer was not completely answered the first time he called it out. But when he obediently spoke it again “… they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.”(Ezekiel 37:10) Perhaps God is speaking to the church in America. Perhaps that unrest we feel is the sound of dry bones rattling as they begin to come together. Perhaps we need to persist in prayer as Ezekiel did and speak over our nation, over our families and over the church. Perhaps we need to come together,

just like those dry bones. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we have the opportunity to be “an exceedingly great army”. Just like Ezekiel was obedient to prophesy over the bones as commanded by God, we can be obedient to pray together in unity. Jesus longed for our unity. It was his last recorded prayer before his arrest (John 17: 11-26). Every year our nation sets one day apart for prayer. The National Day of Prayer is May 4th in 2017. Katy, Texas has a beautiful legacy of prayer and has celebrated this national event since it’s inception. In recent years the churches of Katy (70+) have come together in the Merrell Center to pray and worship in unity. The worship will continue for a total of 50 hours at Fire on the Altar, held in the Epicentre on the campus of Grace Fellowship, UMC. It’s 1 Event, 2 Locations, 3 Days. Awesome! It’s a unique opportunity to interact with God in a fresh way. I invite you to come to both locations. Seek the face of God in a new place, in a new way and see if He will speak to your soul. Stand together with other believers in the presence of God and be refreshed, come alive again. Katyprays.org for full details and to volunteer. May 4th: 7 – 8:30pm @ the Merrell Center more than 70 churches will pray together with worship led by Phillips, Craig and Dean. May 4th: 8pm @ the Epicentre more than 30 churches will take turns leading worship and prayer all day and night until the finale, 7-9pm on Saturday, May 6th with a city wide celebration. Stephanie Leggett is the Director of Community Relations at The Great Southwest Prayer Center in Katy, Texas. Thegreatsouthwestprayercenter.org .

The office also offers flexible and extended hours, along with weekend appointments as a convenience for patients. “We believe a dental visit should not be a chore or a burden on your busy life,” Dr. Siu said. “We strive to make your visit an efficient visit where you can still make other plans for the day.” At your typical dental office, you will probably have one doctor running from one room to the next trying to take care of multiple patients. The doctors at the Dental People are there until the procedure is done. They want to give their patients their undivided attention. “Here, at the Dental People, we respect our patients’ time and believe that we can offer a different experience,” Dr. Siu said. “When our

patients leave our office, we want them to feel their best and not feel that they spent their day at the dentist.” The equipment in the Dental People’s office is next to none just like their skills and service. The office has all new dental chairs that are designed to make the patient very comfortable. Televisions are also placed in each room to help patients feel even more at ease. When patients come in for an exam or consultation, Dr. Siu and Dr. Izu take the time to thoroughly explain procedures and diagnoses. To aid in the explanation, nearly all of the patient’s files are digital. “We are very transparent with our records and treatment recommendations,” Dr. Siu said. “That’s what seems to work well with our patients. A lot of the technologies we have are meant to capture what the dentist sees, so when our patients leave our office with any recommendations it is not just based solely on the dentist’s word.” The Dental People also started offering free exams and consultations starting this year. “We wanted to create access and make it easy for patients to come in and see the dentist,” Dr. Siu said. “When you come here we hope you feel taken care of and then go share your experience with your friends and loved ones. It’s an unbelievable feeling to be able to help people in this way.” To experience the Dental People difference yourself, call 281-769-7648 to schedule your appointment. Parenting By Agreement By Pastor Cardenas For every parent the most joyful and at the same time most difficult task is to raise children. It is a major emotional and financial investment. In my personal observation of people, I generally have watched the transformation of individuals once they become parents. For the most part, people usually change their paradigm of life once they start parenting. It is a natural process, giving the fact of the joy and responsibility that it takes to raise children. It is still more challenging to raise children today because of the major shifts in values going on in our society. Parents usually deal with a continuous posture of defense in order to protect their children from the impact and influence of a world gone crazy. It does take a village to raise a child, but it all begins with God fearing parents. If the parents neglect their responsibilities, the whole village suffers! It takes both husband and wife to agree on fundamental strategies to raise their children. The couple must agree on key issues of faith, discipline, family values and expectations for each child. The Bible is the best blueprint manual to help in this noble endeavor. You may also read many books which offer some help; however, you must realize that from the moment of conception each child is exceptionally different. Such individuality is what makes educating each child a special

challenge. My wife and I raised three children, a son and a set of twin girls. Each one has some familiar traits, but their personalities and temperament are distinctly different. To promote a desired behavior on each, we had to invent and reinvent ways to deal with each individual character. The best thing that you can do to raise a child is to teach him or her Continued on page 73

to fear God. The fear of God is the beginning of knowledge. Our lives depend on the manner in which we make decisions. Warning, children do learn and imitate the ways we solve problems. They learn a lot more by example than by discourse. This is why is so critical that what you say is backed by your actions. As parents, you are the primary example of love, patience and righteousness. God grants you the blessing to raise a child and to positively influence his or her behavior. It is imperative that what is required of the child, it is modeled by the parent’s own behavior. No matter how hard you try to raise a child to be good, there will

be disappointments. Hence, your faith and patience will be stretched to the max. Sometimes you will find yourself asking what kind of child am I raising? Sometimes we falsely believe that is our fault when a child goes the wrong direction. The guilt trip is very devastating for parents. The response to every challenge with our children is a prayer. Remember that your child is also loved by God, even more than you can love him or her. We just have to present them to God on a daily basis. If there something I personally learned about raising children, it is to be in touch with heaven for their wellbeing on a daily basis. The oldest book of the Bible teaches us that Job offered a sacrifice every single day for each of his children. Parenting by agreement gives a child a sense of security and harmony. Make it clear to the child that mom and dad are in agreement regarding expectations and discipline. From the crib, kids quickly learn to manipulate parents and cause pandemonium. In fact, part of marriage conflict and tension come from parenting issues. To avoid manipulation, the couple must have a plan to contribute as a team. If one parent makes a “normal” discipline mistake, the other helps by correcting, suggesting and adjusting in private. The worst thing you can do as a parent happens when you unauthorized your partner in front of your child. This will send a signal to the child that is ok to engage in unwanted behavior with a particular parent. Strengthen your agreement on parenting and you will reap lasting results. “For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, And the corrections of discipline are the way of life.” – Proverbs 6:23

Recipe: Honey Ham in the Slow Cooker Yield: 8-10 servings Ingredients • 3/4 c. packed light brown sugar • 1/2 c. honey • 1/2 c. water • 1/4 c. Dijon mustard • 10 whole cloves • 1 (8- to 10-lb.) spiral cut ham Equipment • Measuring cups and spoons • Small saucepan • 6-qt. or larger slow cooker • Baster or brush Directions Make the glaze: Combine the brown sugar, honey, water, mustard, and cloves in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over mediumhigh heat. Cook until the glaze is homogeneous and fragrant from the cloves, about 5 minutes. Remove the cloves with a spoon. Prepare the ham: Place the ham in a 6-quart or larger slow cooker, making sure you can put the lid on. You may have to turn the ham on its side, or trim a bit off the top if your ham is too large. Gently pull apart the ham’s slices and separate them.

Add the glaze: Pour the glaze over the ham, trying to cover as much of the ham as possible, but not worrying too much, as the glaze will fall back into the slow cooker. Cook the ham: Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours. Every hour (or as you remember), baste the ham with the glaze. You can also flip the ham halfway through cooking, if desired. Serve: The ham is ready when it reaches an internal temperature of 140°F. Serve with the thickened glaze. Recipe Notes: The glaze can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Store leftover ham in its juices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
