It’s hard to believe that we are already in the second quarter of 2019! In less than two months, another school year will be in the books. This is a momentous moment in my life because my youngest daughter Naomi will be graduating high school. By summer’s end, I will officially be an “Empty Nester.” My how the years have flown by! Most of us live life as though we are going to live forever. We work, build a career/business, raise our families, build a house… all without ever thinking that one day, we will all die. Our existence on this planet is fleeting, and too often we become obsessed with the secular world. Building our lives on Earth is important, but what have we done to assure that we will have Eternal Life when that day arrives? And if we have assurance of salvation, have we stored up any treasures in Heaven? 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6: 19-21 (NKJV) A friend of mine recently revealed to me a stack of one-dollar bills that he carries in his car to give to the homeless when he sees them. I know that living in a city, we become desensitized to homelessness. Many of you may think that if you were to give a homeless person money, they would inevitably use it for drugs or alcohol. Perhaps they might, but perhaps they won’t. Even if they do misuse the gift, that’s between them and God. God judges our hearts and we will not miss out on His blessings if our intentions are pure. Katy Mayoral election is on May 4 and Katy has the opportunity to stay with the status quo, or move in a different direction. This issue, we allowed both candidates, Bill Hastings and current mayor Chuck Brawner, an opportunity to lay out their visions for Katy. I don’t really know Mayor Brawner, but I know that Bill Hastings’ wife, Susan, has been part of Katy Christian Ministries for years. I also know that Bill Hastings is active in Westside Christian Chamber of Commerce and his church. On April 20, Katy Christian Magazine and Fort Bend Christian Magazine are hosting the Second Katy Resurrection Run held at Faith West Academy. You can find the details in this issue or on our website at www.resurrectionrunkaty.com. It’s for a great cause and we really need your participation to make this event a success. We also pray that your family and you will have a blessed Easter Sunday. It was because of Christ sacrifice on the cross that we might have Eternal Life. Joseph R. Celebrate Easter at the Katy Resurrection Run By Caitlin Richards The countdown is on for the Second Annual Katy Resurrection Run on Saturday, April 20, 2019. With a certified course on Faith West Academy’s beautiful 40-acre campus, the 5K run and 1K family walk/run is a great way for families to celebrate the Easter weekend while giving back to their community! “We are planning a really fun, family friendly, Christ-centered event,” said Joseph Menslage, Katy/Fort Bend Christian Magazine’s publisher and Katy Resurrection Run founder. “We want the Katy community to come out and enjoy it, while helping us give back.” All of the funds raised from the Resurrection Run will go toward Faith West’s Eagle Initiative, which supports various local organizations. This includes Caring 4 Katy, Good Shepherd, Sunshine Kids and Sunshine thru the Rain. The certified course makes the Resurrection Run a great event for runners looking for credits for marathons. The Resurrection Run is one of the few 5K runs in the Katy and Fort Bend area that is a certified course, said Menslage. However, you don’t have to be an experienced runner to participate. “Most of us are not even active runners, but we wanted to come out to support the cause and do something fun together to celebrate the Easter season,” said past participant and Owner of Showcase Continued on page 9

Gymnastics in Katy, Cheryl Cupples. Cupples attended the inaugural Resurrection Run with her coworkers at Showcase Gymnastics. One of the most memorable parts of the Resurrection Run was how the event kicked off with a devotional, Cupples recalled. “Starting with the devotional was cool, because it reminded us of why we were there and what the Easter story means for us all,” Cupples said. Additionally, Cupples said that the Resurrection Run’s course was both easy to follow and picturesque. A large portion of the course is around the park and lake by the Faith West Academy campus. “It was very scenic,” Cupples said. “You weren’t just running

through random neighborhood streets. It was nice to be running while surrounded by nature. I really enjoyed that part of the Resurrection Run.” Participating in the Resurrection Run is certainly enjoyable, but it is also a meaningful experience. With proceeds being donated to the Eagle Initiative, participants are able to make an impact that is far reaching. Many of the sponsored organizations benefit children and families from downtown and greater Houston. “The Resurrection Run greatly impacts the community of Katy because we do a lot of community outreach through Eagle Initiative,” said Gary Kerr, the founder and president of Faith West. “It really reaches into the community and tries to meet the needs of the Katy community in a variety of ways.” The Resurrection Run would not be possible without its sponsors who generously give their support. Katy Christian Magazine and Fort Bend Christian Magazine team up with Faith West Academy to host the event, along with several other community sponsors. The 2019 title sponsor is Belhaven University. When Belhaven heard about the Resurrection Run’s mission to bring hope and resources to children and their families in the community, they knew they had to help in any way possible. “It is all about the kids,” said Erica Scardino, the director of admissions and student services for Belhaven University’s adult, graduate and online division. “The charities that the Eagle Initiative supports do amazing work. We are excited to work alongside Faith West and Katy/Fort Bend Christian Magazines to accomplish their fundraising goal.” Other community sponsors for 2019 include Ad Webvertising, Cane Island, Drymalla Construction Company and Holiday World. “Together, we are able to make the Resurrection Run happen,” Menslage said. “We can’t do it all on our own though. We need the Katy community too. We hope everyone from experienced runners to families looking for something fun to do will sign up to participate in the run.” Participants can receive a $10 discount on their registration by signing up early. To register, visit resurrectionrunkaty.com. Special discounts are offered to first responders and military service members with an ID. Make plans to celebrate this Easter weekend by bringing your family to participate in the Katy Resurrection Run. In addition to the run, there will be a variety of other entertainment, including live

music and fantastic food from the Resurrections Run’s other generous sponsors. “It is natural that during the Easter season, which celebrates the resurrection of our Lord and symbolically new life, that we think of ways we can help lives, touch people and sacrifice in order to help others,” Kerr said. “That is the great thing about the Resurrection Run: it really is a natural expression of the heart of Christ.” For additional information about the Katy Resurrection Run, visit the Facebook page @ResurrectionRunKaty.

Get to Know the Candidates for Katy Mayor By Joseph Menslage This May, Katy residents return to the polls to decide on a Mayor. The candidates, Bill Hastings, former Katy police chief and Chuck Brawner, current Katy mayor, each have decades of experience.

Katy Christian Magazine asked each of the candidates to share more about their background, qualifications, and plans for the future. We encourage you to get to know each of the candidates and to participate in the voting process this May. Early voting runs April 22-30. Election Day is May 4. Regardless of how the race unfolds, Katy has a bright future ahead and either of these men will serve Katy well.

Bill Hastings Candidate for Katy Mayor

Preserving Our Past with An Eye for the Future Motivated with a heart for service, Bill Hastings would be honored to continue serving the Katy Community as the next mayor. The growth that we are experiencing in Katy has exceeded our expectations. What I have learned during my 43-year career in public safety for the City of Katy is that residents want their voices heard on issues that affect the place that they call home and to know that their opinions matter. I have always valued the relationships I have built in Katy and if

the concerns that preserve and protect all residents. When I moved to Katy in the early 70s, this town was a very small, productive rice farming community. The rapid growth that we have witnessed has placed even more importance on the increased responsibilities that fall upon our leaders. As your mayor I will be committed to preserving the small-town atmosphere while managing positive growth. The safety of our citizens is my top priority. By providing all of the resources needed to our emergency services by way of workforce and equipment, we can lower response times and offer heightened protection for our families and businesses. The infrastructure of the city is paramount to the safety and enjoyment of our families and is also an important focal point for me if I am elected. I will be addressing this with measures to prevent flooding and update and improve aging water and sewer lines, roadways and sidewalks. As far as management of growth, I will encourage smart growth that would ensure we maintain the small-town atmosphere and excellent city services that people moved to Katy to experience. I would also concentrate efforts to expand our parks and recreation program. I will encourage cohesiveness by promoting improved communication between our city, citizens, and businesses with regard to code enforcement, permitting issues and trash services and be 100% available to and responsive to community members. My wife, Susan Denise and I have been married for 32 years. We have raised our five children in Katy and now spend invaluable time with our nine grandchildren. Susan Denise is the director of the Crisis Center at Katy Christian Ministries. We attend Katy Community Fellowship Church and are both motivated with hearts of service. Having attended 400+ city council meetings during my 43-year career with the City of Katy, I have developed an interest in city government and a desire to serve in a leadership capacity beyond public safety. I would be honored to continue my service to the citizens and business owners in the City of Katy as your mayor. Pd. Pol. Ad by Bill Hastings Campaign, Sandy Schmidt, Treasurer.

Chuck Brawner Katy Mayor

Committed to Keeping Katy on the Right Track for Our Families Katy Mayor Chuck Brawner is seeking a second term to serve the city of Katy as Mayor in the May 4 city elections. “Serving Katy has been a distinct honor and I would be humbled to serve one more term to complete the work we have begun together,” said Chuck. “The families of Katy were at the center of my campaign when I ran for Mayor and our Katy families remain the center of my re-election campaign to keep Katy on the right track.” Chuck has made significant progress since his 2017 election 2017 in fighting flooding. Plans were deep in the works when Hurricane Harvey hit in the fall of 2017. When Hurricane Harvey hit, Chuck went into action working with emergency management crews, police and fire, the Texas National Guard and elected officials from around the area to rescue and protect as many Katy citizens as humanly possible. Chuck has worked with Congressman Michael McCaul and others to work to protect Katy for the long-term in Harvey’s aftermath - among them exploring solutions to secure the Cypress Watershed and calling for more efforts to unite in the region to prevent flooding of Katy. Chuck, as Mayor, has instituted more accountability with the contractors to get the job done on time or pay penalties - a campaign promise kept. The Katy Times said the city has been “proactive in terms of working toward finding solutions for flooding issues for its citizens” (Katy Times, Aug. 28, 2018). Chuck wants to keep it that way and keep projects moving toward completion on time and on schedule. It is a commitment he takes to heart, overseeing progress and personally

visiting the locations to assess implementation. Katy families and residents have suffered from flooding for far too long,” Chuck said. “When I was elected, fighting flooding was one of my top priorities and will continue to be. We are finding solutions with our neighboring counties to work together to protect families from devastating floods. We are pushing for improved drainage and street repair for our neighborhoods. We have brought more life-saving equipment into Katy should we get hit again and we have helped folks across Katy rebuild after Harvey.” Under Chuck’s leadership as Mayor, long-term flood prevention, stormwater planning and infrastructure improvements are being implemented without a tax increase or tax rate increase to Katy taxpayers. Chuck has sought ways to not raise taxes in Harvey recovery by leveraging commercial development while preserving Katy’s hometown identity.

As a former police chief, ensuring the safety of Katy families and residents is another significant service Chuck sought to improve. He oversaw the building of the second fire station that had been long-delayed. This station has reduced response times for families and neigh-

borhoods in its service area. While a member of City Council, Chuck had begun a grant process to cover the costs for more firefighters. This grant was approved and the city was able to hire more firefighters to keep Katy safe, saving the city $2.1 million. Katy Fire Department’s ranking has improved under Chuck’s leadership. Within 30 hours of this fire station’s Grand Opening, the life of a 3-year-old toddler, who was drowning in a nearby hotel pool, was saved when first responders were able to get to the scene within moments. Bringing increased lifesaving services to Katy is a goal Chuck will keep advancing in a second term. Chuck has always looked for ways to save money for Katy and its taxpayers on City Council and as Mayor. He scrutinizes the department budgets to determine where costs can be streamlined and waste eliminated. Chuck has expected high standards of service and integrity of city employees as Mayor and has settled for no less on behalf of the taxpayers of the city.

“I committed to keep Katy on the right track when I ran for Mayor and we have worked tirelessly to make that happen, improving our public safety, our roads and drainage, our flood management systems, our way of doing business with city employees and with our contractors - all while staying within our budget and not increasing taxes,” said Chuck. “We are managing the growth so that people love living here to raise their family. Dear Doctor: What is Tremor and What Are My Treatment Options? By Dr. Raja Mehanna What is tremor? Known as shaking, tremor is an involuntary motion of the arms, legs or head. There are two types of tremors. An action tremor (in the arms) happens when you shake while trying to use your arms during activities like eating, writing or using a screw driver. A rest tremor is involuntarily shaking when your arms are not moving from activities like sitting, resting or watching TV. Is tremor always due to Parkinson’s disease? No. Tremor can be the result of Parkinson’s disease, but also other disorders such as essential tremor, dystonia or even medications. How can we differentiate them? It’s difficult to distinguish. Tremor can be due to many causes: Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and others. It would be best to see a movement disorder specialist, like a neurologist that specializes in movement disorders, to get the right diagnosis. Treatments are not the same for all types of tremor. What treatments are there? Treatments vary based on the cause of tremor. But it can include medications, injections of botulinum toxins (such as Botox®) or brain surgery called Deep Brain Stimulation. Your movement disorder specialist can tailor the treatment to the type of tremor you have and its impact on your daily life. Brain surgery? That sounds frightening! Not at all. Deep Brain Stimulation has been used in Europe for more than 30 years, and has been FDA approved in the U.S. for more than 20 years. At our center, we perform one or two of these surgeries per week. Any potential candidates for the surgery will need to be

assessed first by a movement disorder specialist to make sure that they will obtain the maximum benefits, as not all tremors are treatable by this surgery. Dr. Raja Mehanna is a board-certified neurologist at UT Physicians who specializes in movement disorders. Be Drawn to His Presence at Carson’s Art School By Caitlin Richards The presence of God surrounds us. His presence is with us in the mundane moments and joyous occasions. It is easy to think His presence is only in worshipful singing and meditated prayers, but connecting with God doesn’t require as much as we might think. “Everyone knows about music, and even dance as a form of worship to connect with God,” said Shawn Carson, owner of Carson’s Art School. “But they don’t realize art itself can be a way to connect with God too. (Art can) even be an act of worship… you can feel His presence.” Carson’s Art School already offers a variety of art programs for all ages, but Carson wanted to provide a space for creatives to be “drawn to His presence” by connecting their artistic abilities to their relationship with God. “I thought, what if you had a place where you could get together with other Christians and explore your connection with God while using your creative side to get closer to Him,” Carson said. “I also really wanted to show people creative ways to spend time with God. We would like to be a place where artistic people from local churches can explore their talent in a

way their church may not provide.” As an artist, Carson has experienced what it is like to get caught up in creating a painting or drawing in a worshipful way. While creating during those moments, Carson said that his inspiration is deeper

and more meaningful. He felt it really gave his art a purpose. “We also call it art with a purpose,” Carson said. “It is about using artistic talent as a way to help the community and as an act of worship. [The connection] is more obvious with musical praise and worship, but art can also provide the same. We want people to know they can use their artistic talent to reach others and worship God.” The Drawn to His Presence program is targeted toward anyone looking to explore their untapped, God-given talents through art.

Practiced artists are welcomed, along with creative individuals looking to learn art. With the program, the inspiration and context of creating is faith-based. “We want people to be comfortable and confident in the fundamentals [of art] first,” Carson said. “So we first go through how to draw and other basic fundamentals. After that, we really start to dive into the creating.” Practiced artists who do not need fundamental lessons will jump straight into the creation portion of the program. There are three categories within the program: praise and worship, biblical study and community outreach. Everything created in the program falls within the context of these three categories. “Praise and worship is creating from a place of praise and worship,” Carson said. “Biblical study creates images from scriptures to help tell their story and meaning with symbolism. Then, community outreach is where you take these creative images to the community, to share messages in a unique and memorable way.” The program also incorporates several themes to help inspire creation. Carson reported that classes often start with a scripture project, where participants pick a favorite scripture to study and reflect on. He teaches participants what it is like to brainstorm and arrive to a place of creation. “We have something we came up with called the SAVE method,” Continued on page 23

Carson said. “You study the actual word. Apply it to the world, life and situations. Visualize it with brainstorming, and then execute the actual project. So, study, apply, visualize and execute – SAVE.” Other themes for projects include art connected to a favorite worship song, prayer paintings and testimonial tapestry. With the Drawn to His Presence program, participants can expect a flexible experience that is tailored to their own artistic abilities and faith. The program is a one-on-one experience that can be started at any time. “We will also have some group events with the community outreach portion,” Carson said. “We hope to offer a time when we play praise and worship music for participants to come in together and create in community.” A special event will be held on Friday, May 3 for creative minds who are interested in learning more about the Drawn to His Presence program. This Easter Season By John Montgomery Church On The Rock Katy We are a forgetful people, and more often than not, we forget that we need to be saved. I do not mean just a one-time “come to Jesus” moment; we need an everyday rescue, “pull me from the pit because I am sinking fast” type of saving. The sad part is that most of us do not realize the critical state we are in. The routine of everyday life and the self-sufficiency of our daily plans can lull us into a spiritual sleep. We can cruise on auto-pilot as long as no major emergencies are happening around us. We go to church, read the Bible, pray and take care of other business, believing that we are good. The pharisees thought they were good, too. The self-sufficiency of their routine fooled them into thinking they were the righteous lights of the world. As long as they abided by the law, or at least appeared to keep the law, they were prospering in eyes of men. But we know that is not true. The pharisees lost sight of their first love and did not realize how far they had already sunk into the pit of self-righteousness. We are all in desperate need of saving, and in spite of our best efforts at making ourselves righteous through what we Continued on page 26

do, we just cannot attain goodness ourselves. But our Father in heaven has showered his great love on us through Jesus Christ. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God,” (2 Cor 5:21, ESV). Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, we have been set free from the work of trying to make ourselves right. Through the work of the cross, we are free from self-deception and can finally see clearly! We are in eternal need and our needs can only be met through the risen savior.

My prayer as we enter into this Easter season is that the eyes of our hearts are enlightened once more. Remember the hope to which we have been called, the inheritance we have received, and the immeasurable power shown to us by the cross of Jesus Christ. Remember the gospel of your salvation.

The Power of an Invite By Lori Joiner Glazed doughnuts. Ok, glazed doughnuts and cute guys kept me coming to church in the beginning. But what initially got me there was an invitation. I moved to a new city just before my junior year of high school and the Powell family, two doors down from my new home, invited me to their church. I was living with my dad and stepmom, who did not attend church, and I wondered if God could help me in some way. As a party girl, who had been kicked out of high school the year before, I had certainly prayed to God to get me out of many jams. I accepted the invitation. Each Sunday morning that followed, after a long night of partying, I dragged myself out of bed for the glazed doughnuts and cute guys that were consistently at church. I would make my way to the Powell’s home for a ride. After a few months of this routine, the youth director shared with me that God loves me and has a plan for my life. As he spoke, there was a stirring in my heart. I sank to my knees and admitted to God that I was a sinner and asked for His forgiveness. I asked Jesus to come into my life and to make me the person He wanted me to be.

The rest, they say, is history. I grew and deepened in my new relationship with God. Upon graduation from college, I joined a mission organization and began to travel the world, sharing the love of God with others. I opened a women’s home, the Faith House, in Waco, Texas, helping college women learn more about a relationship with Christ and grow in Him. I began to author books and Bible studies. Then, I founded a

non-profit ministry to help women disciple and mentor other women spiritually. As I look back, I reflect on the fact that it was the Powell’s initial invitation to their church that made such a difference. That action pushed the dominoes in my life in the right direction. I am grateful that they were not too busy to notice a new family had moved onto their street. They were not worried that I would be offended by being invited to church. They did not act inconvenienced by giving a ride to another person each week for months on end. Jesus tells us in scripture to “go and make disciples.” But far too often, we “stay” and don’t make the effort. We are too busy, we don’t want to offend others, or we are content in our routines without interruptions. I now love inviting people to gatherings. I invited a mother I met at the neighborhood pool to come to church with me. Soon after, her entire family met me in our church lobby. I invited a gal from the gym to a Bible study, and she is now a

faithful member. My son came home from school and told me he invited a friend to church. He added that we needed to pick the friend up that week. When I texted the mother to ask if that was OK, she responded, “Yes, he can go with you, but can my daughter and I come too?” Who could you invite this week? Your simple invite can make a huge difference in the life of another. The Powell family could not have imagined all that God would do in and through my life with their single invitation. I invite others to Christian gatherings in hopes that God will touch their lives as He did mine. You could say it’s my way of “paying it forward.” But really, to me, it’s that I know firsthand the power of an invite.

Love Thy Neighbor: The Medical-Spiritual Connection By Rebecca Deurlein Got the sniffles? There’s a lot of that going around these days, along with the stomach flu and other pesky illnesses. You can call your doctor and begin what can be a long process to getting well, or you can walk into Love Thy Neighbor Clinic in Katy and be out in no time. Opened in January of this year, this unique clinic combines medical treatments with spiritual renewal. It was the brainchild of owner Thuy Nguyen, who saw a gap in the healthcare system and set out to fill it. “God showed me there’s a huge need in preventative care,” Nguyen explained. “I grew up in a family of eight siblings in a lowincome environment. We were on welfare and we used the public health system. I remember waiting all day for medical care and other services, and thought, even at a young age, that there should be a better system.” After having her first child, Nguyen considered nursing in order to be a better mom and care provider. In nursing school, she was impacted during her public health rotation, where she became aware that her patients’ greatest need is education, specifically how to take care of themselves and stay out of the hospital. The idea was born to create a place that educated not only the mind but the heart. Nguyen created a business page on Facebook and prayed for the right people to join her team. Immediately she found

a physician with which she could collaborate, a doctor active in his church, who she can consult with when needed. She hired medical assistants to round out her staff and opened her doors, which look quite different from those in a typical walk-in clinic. “We have Scripture on our walls. We don’t discriminate, but we

are unapologetically Christian. We don’t take donations and we’re not government funded or sponsored. Our patients don’t have to qualify based on income.” It was important for Nguyen to operate a clinic that is available to those who need medical care, but that also addresses patients’ spiritual needs.

and strive to offer lower prices and affordable health care for their patients. They pride themselves on the care they provide and the follow up they ensure with each and every patient to see how they are doing well after they walk out the door. They make an effort to refer patients to other low-cost resources in the area, even creating a directory of providers. Popular services include reversing conditions, occupational health, weight loss programs, vaccinations, well-women exams, and natural health. The clinic teaches people how to be accountable for their health at a lower cost than the major retail clinic chains. As Nguyen put it, their mission is different from that of their competitors. “Our goal is to glorify Christ, not just provide a service. Whether or not we make a lot of money or do great business is secondary. We want to bring people to Christ.”

Love Thy Neighbor Clinic is located at 1945 N. Mason St in Katy. Mention this article and get $5 off a sports physical.

“We focus on the person as a whole. Everyone that works here starts their day with prayer. The scriptures on our walls are there to make people think. We offer the opportunity to pray with our patients. We take prayer requests and follow up with our patients to let them know we are continuing to pray for them,” added Nguyen. The Love Thy Neighbor Clinic offers all of the basic services of your typical walk-in clinic. They study the costs of labs and services

The Proof is in the Puke – God Doesn’t Always Answer Our Prayers By Jordan Harrell The stomach bug hit our house last week. And hit, and hit, and hit. I thought I made it through unscathed, until two hours after my husband left town. My stomach started to rumble a bit, but I attributed it to the extra slice of chocolate cake I’d cut for myself after dinner. The rumbling turned into more of a roaring in a matter of minutes, and I knew this was no sugar overload. I sent the kids to bed so I could get on with it. I knew what was coming. I had seen it ravage two of my children just hours before. I also knew my stomach. I was bracing myself for what would inevitably be a long night. Enter child #3, stumbling into my room with a green look on her face. Make that a longer night. My husband called the next morning telling me he was going to head back early from his trip. “I’m on my way,” he said. I assured him the worst was over. The other two kids were watching a movie and we were okay. “Don’t worry about it. I think I’ll gain my strength back in a few hours, which would be when

ies for 12 straight hours, but we survived. Flash forward to four days later. Spring break has arrived and we’re getting ready for a long overdue family vacation to Glen Rose. As I’m putting the kids down for bed, the three-year-old complains of his mouth hurting, “the back of his mouth,” which means his throat. This was the exact conversation we had the week before right before he threw up all over me. And maybe it was because his teacher had told me the flu was going around at school, or maybe it was because I had already spent

money on this trip and we NEVER spend money on trips, or maybe it was because I just couldn’t deal with one more virus, I took my hand, laid it over his throat, and prayed. “God, you are the healer, the God of miracles, who made the blind man see and the lame man walk and the woman stop bleeding. We pray that you make Hayes feel better. Make his throat stop hurting. We pray that he wakes up in the morning with energy and no pain.” As I prayed, I actually believed God could. I BELIEVED he would. Maybe for the first time ever, my faith was getting to the place where I believed God was as powerful as he claims to be. Thirty minutes later, he erupted all over the hallway. Welp. That didn’t work. He finished up in the bathroom, I washed him off, got him a drink, and put him in my bed while I sprayed down the house for

what seemed like the 1,956th time that week. I was so confused. Not because the prayer hadn’t worked, but because he already had the stomach bug. I don’t understand!? I went back into my room and laid next to him, staring at him, wondering what the next twelve hours would look like. Twelve hours later, he woke up next to me, leaned over, and asked, “Cam-I go do a puzzle?” I nodded in mid-drowse, as he bounced off the bed and ran out of the room. The only evidence of his mystery illness was the empty trash can next to the bed. Now, it could’ve been that something was stuck in his throat. It could’ve been he ate something that didn’t settle well. It could’ve been a thousand different explanations that make a lot more sense than a supernatural healing. But here’s what I know. I know prayer is often my very last resort. When it comes to challenges that arise in motherhood or life in general, my first instinct is to handle it, my second instinct is to complain to my husband, my third instinct is to ask my friends for advice, and my very last resort when everything else fails … is to pray to the God who has proven himself faithful time and time and time again. Not only to me, but to millions of others for generations. But he threw up after the prayer, right? Indeed. He did. And it made me think about all the times in my life I expected God to answer a certain way. I expected him to make the sin disappear, to make the circumstances magically better, without me having to do the hard work to get to the other side. It made me think about the times I want him to be my fixer, not my healer. I want him to be a magician, not my God. But sometimes we have to get rid of some of the bad stuff in our life first before he can clean out our insides and make us new, make us holier. Today my three-year-old and I will pray again. We’ll pray a prayer of thanksgiving for health, for weird healing, and for reminding us that he doesn’t always do things the way we expect, but he’s still working for our good. Writer, Speaker, Blogger, featured on Her View From Home, Huffington Post, Today Parents, For Every Mom, Relevant.com, Full & Well Magazine, and others. Here you will find a lot of Jesus, a lot of encouragement, and maybe just a little bit of snark.

Helping Your Kids Make the Most of Summer By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein The weather is warming, trees are shedding pear blossoms, and school (and all those busses clogging the streets) will soon come screeching to a halt. While teachers and students are counting down the days to their summer respite, parents are staring at the calendar wondering how the heck they’re going to keep their kids busy. It’s a good question. Most teens are too young to work but too old for summer camps. Too many will simply get into trouble, especially if left alone all day with nothing to do. Others will sleep and sleep, Netflix binge, then sleep some more. That’s why all the experts recommend having a plan for your kids that yes, includes rest and fun, but also engages the mind and body and keeps kids active during their two-month break from school. Below are some suggestions to help you get started on a summer break plan that will provide memorable experiences for your kids and peace of mind for you. 1. Pre-College Summer Programs - In recent years, these “tastes of college” have tripled in number and become quite popular with 9th12th graders. With a wide range of offerings, universities across the U.S. provide programs for introducing students to careers or delving into an area of interest. It’s an opportunity to meet professors and

admissions counselors, live in a dorm, and be around a whole new group of kids that just may become lifelong friends. And it’s a great resume builder! 2. Community service - Youth who volunteer just one hour or more a week are 50% less likely to abuse alcohol and cigarettes, become pregnant, or engage in other destructive behavior. As if that weren’t a good enough reason, volunteering as a child greatly increases the likelihood of growing into an adult who volunteers. Working

with those less fortunate naturally develops gratitude, work ethic, leadership, and an understanding of differences crucial to developing tolerance and erasing judgmental attitudes. Whether local or international, mission work and community service can provide a lifechanging summer experience for kids. 3. Internships - The federal government may not endorse child employment, but there is much to be said for non-paid internships and job shadowing. Middle and early high school kids are just starting to think about interests they may parlay into careers, but their understanding borders on fantasy-level. To give them a grounded, realistic view of what a veterinarian, for example, does every day, let them shadow a vet. Give them an opportunity to ask questions of the very people who are living out their dream. Whether they discover that their dream could become a reality, or they realize that the reality is nothing like they had dreamed, it is a win-win. Before you spend tens of thousands of dollars on a college education, give your kids an opportunity to explore the reality of their future degree. 4. Academic advancement or catch-up - Summer is the perfect time to take courses outside of the normal class load. These can be reinforcement courses in areas of weakness, electives students wish to “get out of the way,” or next-level classes that help them get a jump on the competition. They may be offered through your local high school, community college, or online - just be sure that the course will transfer to high school or college credit. Summer is also a great time to take an SAT or ACT Prep course, to work on college applications, and to write college essays. Encourage your kids to complete these now, when they are not bogged down with homework and tests. 5. Reading - I taught for a long time, and I know how kids can balk at the thought of reading. But one thing I discovered is that there

is something for everyone. Non-readers just haven’t found their something yet. Or, they’ve been forced to read books they hate, so they’ve been conditioned to hate reading. Work to undo this. Reading can be a lifelong pleasure that opens new worlds, explores new possibilities, and inspires new ways of thinking. Every kid should have a library card. This is their free pass to discover what they like, to “try out” different genres and authors. Once they’ve found their literary sweet spot, they can customize it to their heart’s content. Some will prefer books on tape, others will go the e-reader route, and still others will love the feel of a book in their hands. And keep in mind that reading can take many forms: Maybe they prefer a magazine, Internet articles, or the Sunday paper. No matter what avenue they choose, they should be informed, and they should develop an appreciation for language and what it can convey. Continuing to grow throughout the summer months is important, but so are fun and relaxation. Try to create a balance for your kids so that summer is neither all work nor all play. You will feel the positive effects in your home, and you won’t be nearly as eager to send them back to school come August. Local, Convenient, Chic with Dapper Dearest By Caitlin Richards Busy schedules leave little room for doing anything but the necessities. As a working professional, mom and wife, Karla Hutchinson found herself with no time to shop for stylish looks. “Finding time to go to the mall or boutiques to shop for myself just doesn’t happen,” Hutchinson said. “I have to do the majority of my shopping online at boutiques from all over.” A long commute and heaps of homework occupied Hutchinson’s weeknights, while birthday parties and sporting events filled her weekends. However, she was far from alone in this situation. Many of her co-workers, friends and fellow moms were faced the same time deficit. “I thought to myself, maybe I could start an online boutique that is actually local here in Katy,” Hutchinson said. “It wouldn’t be an actual brick and mortar boutique, but an online boutique with local ties that is trusted by people in the Katy area.” Before she knew it, Dapper Dearest went live in May of 2018 as Katy’s own online boutique. Dapper Dearest is for all women looking for chic style at affordable prices with a convenient shopping experience. “At first, I thought it was going to be something small, just for my friends,” Hutchinson said. “I already shopped a lot online and knew the brands and designers to buy from. It all just came together and has actually turned into something more than I had ever dreamed.” Hutchinson operates the entire business from her home. Shoppers can trust their stylish finds are coming directly from Katy, Texas, as op-

posed to an offsite warehouse. Additionally, while her online boutique is thriving, Hutchinson still maintains a full-time job in the oil and gas industry. “All of the orders go out the next day,” Hutchinson said. “So I come home, print labels and ship everything out. I stay busy. It is a good thing Continued on page 43

I get to shop as part of my work with Dapper Dearest.” Surprisingly, Katy is no longer the market with the most purchases. In the beginning it certainly was, but as Dapper Dearest has grown, so has its presence in the national market. Dapper Dearest has shoppers from nearly all 50 states, as well as some international customers. “I have people from pretty much every state making purchases,” Hutchinson said. “Panama is the farthest I have shipped and I think there have been maybe six states who have not purchased from Dapper Dearest.” Although Dapper Dearest has a broad reach, it is committed to the Katy community and being the local, online shopping solution for the ladies of Katy. Most of the boutique’s models are local Katy women, and the photographer is a local Katy resident, Tiffany Nicole (@tifnay.nicole on

Instagram). The clothing shots are also taken at local Katy spots. Spring is in full swing, and Dapper Dearest has all of the latest trends. The trending colors for spring are bright and bold, with neon as a popular clothing go-to. Nudes and florals are in season as well, Hutchinson reported. Hutchinson predicted that dresses, rompers and jumpsuits are sure to go fast! “Spring at Dapper Dearest will also feature something I am particularly excited about: bathing suits,” Hutchinson said. “I am excited about all of the spring pieces, but I’m really looking forward to having the bathing suits for my shoppers.” The name Dapper Dearest was inspired by the type of clothing Hutchinson wants to offer. To Hutchinson, “dapper” is a multipurpose piece that is easily dressed up, or styled down for a more casual look. Dapper clothing is convenient and multipurpose; shoppers can

Understanding Man’s (and Woman’s!) Best Friend By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein If you’ve ever thought of your dog as nearly human, you’re not far from the truth. Just as there are psychology and experiences that shape us into who we are today, the same applies to dogs. They behave and communicate based on their past experiences and current reactions. To understand this is to create a unique relationship with your pet that brings out the best in both of you. Will Anderson, owner of Canine Initiative Training, finds the psychology of dogs fascinating. But then again, Will has always been a dog lover. While serving in the Marine Corps, Will met dog handlers and was fascinated by their ability to work with canines of all breeds and ages. He became curious about how dogs process information and are able to learn and thoroughly enjoy scent detection. Will had grown up with wolf hybrids and trained a wolf hybrid pup while in the Corps. When he got out of the military, he began his formal studies on animal behavioral science under two world-renowned dog trainers: Jessie Gabriel and Robb Dunn. Under their tutelage, he studied all forms of training in preparation for opening his own business. Continued on page 48

“My goal is to educate and to bridge the gap of communication between person and dog,” Will said. “There is no best friend out there that we can’t communicate with, yet we continue to expect things out of our dogs without communicating with them properly.” Will explained that dogs process cause and effect - if I sit up, I’ll get a treat - and are excellent readers of non-verbal body language. But their cause and effect understanding is limited to between 1.2 and 1.5 seconds. That means that unless you catch your dog in the act, he or she is unlikely to connect an act with a reward or a punishment. “The biggest mistake people make with their pets is not understanding that dogs live in the moment and there is no gray area for them. It’s a rule or not. Dogs can’t make a connection unless the cause and effect is immediate, clear, and consistent,” said Will. So if you dog has an accident in the house and you discover it an hour later, it does no good to show it to your dog and make your displeasure known. He won’t make the connection and will, instead, become even more confused. Knowing this and understanding what makes each dog tick is crucial to bringing out the best in your dog. At Canine Initiative Training, Will works with all breeds, all ages, and all members of the family to build communication skills between family members and their

dogs. According to Will, no dog is untrainable. He shares the story of a Rottweiler who couldn’t be around other dogs without becoming highly aggressive. In understanding what caused this behavior to form, Will discovered that the dog had been left alone with another Rottweiler and the two had viciously fought, leading to the other dog’s death and this dog’s severe injuries. At that point, the Rottweiler had learned that the only way to survive was through aggression. After working with Will, the dog was able to be rehabilitated and now is social with other dogs, even entering dog competitions. In addition to behavior modification, Will offers obedience training and therapy and service dog training. Most of his work centers on training dogs with full family participation so that when his work is finished, everyone is able to communicate better moving forward. He also offers safety training in how to approach an unfamiliar dog. In the end, it’s all about recognizing a dog’s signals before he reacts negatively. Will explained it this way: “We are all animals in the animal kingdom and we all have reasons for behaving the way we do. Owners need to relate to their dogs and be willing to work to understand the breed.” Will provides private sessions in your home. Discounts are offered on packaged services. What My Son’s Toy Spider Reminded Me About God By Jordan Harrell My son got to pick a toy out of the treasure box last week at preschool, and for the third week in a row, he brought home an ugly plastic glowin-the-dark spider. (Because two are not enough.) I was thrilled to see we now had another tiny toy he’d grow attached to, lose, and cry hysterically about when it can’t be found in our always-cleanand-tidy home. As happened the first two times around, he sprinted to his closet as soon as we got home shouting, “MOMMMM!!! COME ON!!! MOOOMMM!!!! LET’S SEE IF IT WOKS!!!!” Then, we stood there in his tiny closet, oohing and ahhing together at the faint green glow. Throughout the next few days, until we lost them all (or “the cleaning lady” threw them away), he’d take one of those spiders into his closet and shout for anyone within earshot to come look. It blew his mind every single time. But every now and then, he’d notice the glow starting to fade. He knew what that meant. He’d go set it under the lamp on the side table—it needed to soak up some more light before it could glow again. He’d leave it there for a while, then come grab it, run back to his closet and yell out again, “MOMMMM!!! COME LOOK!!!! IT’S BWIGHT NOW, MOM!!!!”

It never got old. I’m lying. It did. It did get old. That spider was MADE to glow, to shine light in dark places. That is its purpose. That’s what makes it awesome. It was created (probably in China) to be a *glowing* spider, not a boring, un-glowing spider. Now, you might see that spider laying in the middle of a well-lit room and assume it’s just an everyday, run-of-the-mill plastic spider. If you saw it in the light, you’d never know it was special because IT DOES NOT WORK IN THE LIGHT. Glow-in-the-light is not a thing, you guys. Okay, so of course, yes, you know where I’m going with this. We are the spiders. Blah blah blah. But ALSO. So are our kids. Our kids are (eventually) meant to shine in dark places. Our prayer is that our home is a place of light. A safe haven. A place that constantly reminds them of their belovedness and their belongingness and their complete and total need for Jesus. SO THAT... they can glow. SO THAT... they can shine in dark places. SO THAT... they can go out among the hurting and the broken and the hopeless and be who they were created to be. SO THAT... someday, we can let go and trust completely (or fake it and pray, at least) that their light will outshine the darkness outside. But we also know that inevitably the darkness will weigh on them, exhaust them, feel altogether overwhelming and their light will start to Continued on page 52

feel threatened. But they can’t glow in the light. Glow-in-the-light is not a thing, y’all. We are meant to glow in the dark. And so are so they. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 “When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, ‘Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ On hearing this, Jesus told them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.’” Mark 2:16-17

The Best Tips for Traveling Abroad By Alisa Murray Alisa Murray Travel Design Many a trip continues long after movement in time and space have ceased. – John Steinbeck Over the years I have traveled a lot. As a Travel Agent and Travel Designer, I really enjoy discovering fabulous places and, more importantly, passing on advice and tips that will make my clients vacations more stress-free and enjoyable. There’s a lot of planning that goes into crafting the perfect itinerary. What I would recommend for adults is obviously different than what I would recommend for families, however, there are some general tips you can follow to ensure you each have a memorable experience. When traveling overseas, it is vital to think about time of travel both in the scheduling of the locations right down to sleeping schedules to make sure you are not grumpy and jet lagged. I always begin looking for flights 6 months in advance of travel and check regularly for the best fares. I recommend that flights be booked direct if at all possible, especially with children. When that is not possible, I try to get the flight transfers to occur at times that allow for the most sleeping, i.e. during your family’s normal sleep patterns. I also encourage you to plan to travel during the winter when it is off season so there’s the highest potential for a few extra seats as not many people are traveling and there’s at least chance of an extra seat that can be stretched out on to… you got it… sleep! Prior to leaving for your trip there’s a few things that you can do that will help prepare both yourself and your children for adventures. The smaller the children are the more you’ll want to prepare them, so everyone has a great time and knows what to expect. Knowledge of what is going to happen is key to a happy traveling family! I recommend that you create a visual board of places you will be visiting, activities that you have planned and even prepare foods and listen to music of that place that you are fix’in to travel to. If there’s going to be a giraffe or a shark involved, you’ll find a lot less fear if you talk about that beforehand. Once you have arrived you will want to have pre-arranged transfers from the airport to your initial destination so there’s no scary transfer with luggage into a taxi or unfamiliar bus. This is easily set up in advance and when you are jet lagged it’s worth the money to be safe and stress-free so you can settle in and gear up for a great adventure. Speaking of destinations… I always recommend that you stay near the center of the city that you are learning about. Yes the hotels are a bit cheaper on the outskirts, however you end up paying to get yourself to and fro and in the long run it is more economical and a better experience by staying near to the attractions that have drawn you to list. I also recommend that you carry cash. You will still want to carry cards but having cash on hand and having it exchanged prior to your departure will avoid fees and stress when you need to pick up April / May 2019

something like a snack from a little local shop or take the bus. Buses in Europe do not take cards generally so this just makes your experience easier by planning ahead. Your cell phone is an important tool when traveling abroad because you can use it to map out where you are, find unique places that only the locals frequent…even utilize a translating app but racking up roaming fees can be a huge whack on your budget. Be sure that you call your cellar carrier before leaving and pay for the extended plan which is cheaper than roaming and well worth the price. Aside from destination entrance fees at museums and other attractions the biggest hit to your travel budget will always be food. Dinning out daily can be very expensive so I suggest you purchase snacks that can be a quick meal during the day and go to places that the locals go to pay what the locals pay! Of course, you can splurge here and there this is a vacation of course, but you’ll save a ton by being moderate in how and where you dine. Also if you are staying at a Airbnb, then by all means, l ask around about shopping at the local markets and do some cooking for yourself! Keep on wandering. it’s good for your soul~

A Mortuary Served Up with a Side of Ministry By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Flavor Church isn’t like any church you’ve experienced and “The Chef Pastor” who leads it is as unique as they come. Chef Pastor Errol Clay is in the unique position of leading both a church and a mortuary, and both provide an avenue in which to minister to the spiritually hungry. The food of choice? The Word of God. In March, Clay and his wife celebrated 20 years of ministry. On Easter Sunday they will move Flavor Church out of the mortuary chapel and into McNeill Elementary School located in the Richmond/Katy area, just near FM 1093 & S. Mason Road. The clientele at Clay’s is diverse and he finds himself providing the same amount of ministry to his mortuary families as he does to those he’s called to serve through the church. Clay feels that’s especially important in this day and age. “When l was growing up, attending church was a common Sunday practice and the people who didn’t were often looked upon as misguided heathens. These days, people look at you like Texans fans in the Cowboys stadium in Arlington when you tell them that you’re a regular church attender,” Clay said. “It seems like church attendance has been replaced with the Internet and Social Media Church, Little League, Netflix and a

plethora of other carnal Sunday fillers like pursuing hobbies and attending the newest festival, which are all things that I too occasionally indulge in.” The result, according to Clay, is that when challenges hit people unexpectedly for instance, the death of a loved one - nonchurched individuals collapse under the heavy weight and pressure of grief. “They should have Christ to stand on, but instead, many are hopeless, because they’ve never established any deeper connections that can be found within a faith-based community like Flavor Church.” He sees this in the funeral business and feels fortunate that he is able to minister to those who come to him for burial services. “Many times before we can even begin to make funeral arrangements, we have to first come to a stop and do some much needed Christ-like ministry. This often involves my wife and I sharing a quick word of prayer and a hug. For some families this little ministry on the side is all that they need to move forward.” Clay points to Robin B, who saw the need for a “Mortuary Served Up with a Side of Ministry.” She craved a connection to Christ past the cremation, so much so that after her husband passed away in November 2018, she became a member of Flavor Church and is now one of their top door greeters. Even atheist and agnostic families note that they sense a difference in Clay’s approach and appreciate his non-intrusive ministry as they are saying goodbye to a loved one.

It’s important to Clay to offer more than embalmings, cremations, funerals, and memorials. Families also get 24/7 direct access to caring, praying Christian pastors who are funeral professionals. Clay describes himself and his wife as Christians and humans who have had to bury both sets of their parents, have endured 13 miscarriages, and have had Continued on page 59

Clothed by Faith Provides Clothing to Neighbors in Need By Lily Palmer Exec. Director of Business Development Clothed by Faith is a local nonprofit in Katy, TX that provides those in need with gently-used and new clothing. CBF was founded by Abi Fourie in 2013, and for the past 6 years has brought tremendous support to our community. The mission at CBF is to demonstrate God’s love through the provision of a week’s worth of clothing. Both families and individuals can register online or in person to start their own closet based on their needs. Volunteers then create customized care packages with clothes for every age and size. Clothed by Faith was recently blessed with an anonymous donation facilitated by Kingsland Baptist Church for renovations and upgrades. The renovation has allowed this wonderful organization to expand over the past few months to now include a boutique space, in which women over 18 can schedule an appointment to select their own clothing, shoes, and accessories. This new women’s selection area has been a fantastic new addition, allowing volunteers to provide additional ministry services to the women they are serving. By holding meaningful conversations with the

women, the volunteers can identify individual or family needs and refer them to other local non-profits. Continued on page 64

In addition to this wonderful new enhancement to their organization, CBF has been offered a fantastic opportunity by Texas Network of Youth Services and Rebuild Texas. TNOYS awarded Clothed by Faith a $50,000 grant to begin working closely with school counselors and homeless liaison officers to identify students and their families that are struggling after Hurricane Harvey. Although Hurricane Harvey had devastating effects back in 2017, many families are still facing homelessness and need the support of this community. Clothed by Faith has many volunteer opportunities in the warehouse, at community outreach events, and even at home! Sign up online at www.clothedbyfaith.org to help serve your community today.

Congratulations to El Canton Firewood Pizzeria, who is excited to be celebrating their 3rd anniversary in Katy. El Canton Firewood Pizzeria officially joined the Katy community in February of 2016. Before launching the restaurant, the founder worked in a different pizzeria for a few years while taking basic business courses. After learning the industry, and with the generous help of family and friends, El Canton was born! El Canton began as a small-scale project with many obstacles. The biggest challenge was the transport of the oven, which was built in Guadalajara, Mexico by the founder’s father. Toward the end of 2015, his father and architect sister came to town to assist in remodeling the locale. Now, after 3 years of apprenticeship, El Canton is proud to be the public’s preferred pizzeria in the face of constantly growing competition. With a delicious fusion of Mexican flavors, their food is distinct due to one simple fact: El Canton bakes artisanal pizzas in a firewood oven, which produces a decadent and unique flavor. Visit El Canton Pizzeria at 981 S. Mason Road in Katy.

Katy & Bend was created by Johnny Hawkins. Since 1986, over 32,000 of his cartoons have appeared in leading publications such as Christianity Today, Today’s Christian Living, Guideposts, Reader’s Digest, Woman’s World, Faith Today, Focus on the Family and over 900 other publications.

Dealers Fate Dillon’s hand wouldn’t stop trembling while holding the flashlight. Every snap of the twig and ducking under tree branches created more fear, his muddy boots splashed in cold ankle-deep water puddles, followed by natures symphony of frogs, crickets, crows, and owls. Up ahead his flashlight shone on an old looking home, with lights on inside. Feeling relieved he quick-footed out the woods onto the gravel trail ahead. Dillon took off his hat and soaked black jacket. The last thing he wanted to do was look suspicious knocking on someone’s door at 9:00 p.m. Dillon wasn’t a saint he escaped with his life after a drug deal went wrong. Witnessing the murder of his friend, they also returned fire at Dillon chasing him off into the woods. Finally, Dillon reached the porch steps of the old home resting briefly. Before he could knock on the door, it opened slowly on its own. “Hello anybody in there? I need help,” he said walking in with caution. Inside the abandoned home, pictures and trinkets were on the floor, along with flipped damaged furniture. Dillon stopped dead in his tracks when he heard shuffling feet coming from the end of the hall leading to the bedrooms. Out of nowhere, a headless woman emerged with her left hand raised holding a bloody butcher knife, stumbling into a power walk towards Dillon. “AAHH” he yelled from the top of his lungs. -JLR-Writer-

The summer camp program is taught on an individual basis and is adjusted to each student’s skill level and unique interests. Extra attention is devoted to students when they don’t understand

a concept or want to discover a new approach to their artwork. Kids will use a grid method to draw and then transfer to board for coloring. Teens will start out with advanced drawing lessons to help them draw a realistic animal and face, and then they’ll move onto using colored pencils or painting. When they sign up for more than one week, the next camp will pick up where they left off! Students enjoy Carson’s Art School so much that they often enroll for Fall Art Programs for after school, or for the all year long Saturday classes.
