Our Mission Statement:
“Our mission is to have a magazine devoted to His glory, provide cutting-edge stories important to today’s Christian, promote Christian-Judeo values we find important, and editorial content that your entire family can enjoy.”
School’s out and our kiddos are home for the summer. The challenge is to keep them busy while balancing an element of “down time,” so they can enjoy a break from academics and “just be kids.” To help, we’ve put together a list of Christian films made in Texas by a handful of producers. Most are geared toward youth, so take a look and see what might enhance your video library. Your kiddos may also enjoy our feature on Christian Comedians—although we really wrote it for Dad. With Father’s Day upon us, it makes sense to give dads what they really want, which is “fun time” with the family. We identified the top five Christian comedians who will surely have the family laughing out loud. Their DVDs and You Tube clips really are hilarious. So enjoy Father’s Day, and we hope you get a lot of chuckles out of our suggestions. For our Pastor Profile this issue, we are shouting out the chaplains at Methodist West Hospital who assist patients and families during the most trying times. They work in an interfaith environment as medical issues merge with faith journeys, sometimes in life or death situations. Speaking of medical issues, we interviewed the wonderful Dr. Lin , who has a Katy practice and a spiritual walk that all of us seek in a physician. We also interviewed Dr. Torres about his mission work. Truly, our Katy doctors are among the best in the nation, and it’s nice to know so many share the faith. We also have a Christian business profile, some student profiles, and news about Katy’s own Kristin Bumbera. This wife, mother and NASCAR racecar driver is back on the track, doing what she does best. We’ve kicked off the summer with lots of fun and resources we hope you’ll enjoy. Follow along, and, as always, support our Christian advertisers. They have the ethics and values we seek as Christian consumers. God bless them, and God bless you, our readers! Have a terrific June and July!

Blooming Butterflies: Helping Women with New Beginnings By Ruth Towns Visit Michelle Puckett’s backyard and you’ll spot a caterpillar here and there, an occasional chrysalis, and numerous butterflies. She also grows butterfly vines, especially after her son was involved in a motorcycle accident 10 years ago. After getting the terrible news, she looked down and spotted one of the plants, which “planted” in her heart the seeds of her nonprofit—Blooming Butterflies. Destined to Help Others Puckett is founder and CFO at Designer Exchange Consignment Resale at Westchase, in addition to her 501c3 Blooming Butterflies, which assists disadvantaged women, children and senior citizens. But she also helps personally, often taking her Labrador “Sassy,” a service dog, to local nursing homes and hospitals, including the Community of Hope at St. Luke’s. Puckett handcrafts butterflies, which are tucked into Sassy’s backpack and distributed to elderly residents and hospital patients as a special treat. But her acts of kindness extend beyond the “ordinary.” She recently saved neighbor who tried to commit suicide, and has taken the woman, who was admitted to ICU, under her wing. Various people who are down on their luck reside at her home as she helps them get back on their feet. “If we could all help each other, this would be a better world,” she says.
“So many are afraid to get involved.” This remarkable compulsion to serve began when she was a little girl. Puckett grew up in a trailer park in Rosenberg, the daughter of a police officer, and “got in trouble” for sneaking food out to the maintenance man, who “looked hungry.” Fast forward to 2013, and you’ll find her advocating for battered women and, through her nonprofit, providing clothing and a basic resume guidance. Blooming Butterflies points others toward a new beginning and a new life.

She heads another ministry, Grant Assistant Services, founded in 2010. “We’ve helped 211 people with in kind services and didn’t charge fees,” says Puckett. She helps others start their own nonprofits and submits grants. She also helps kids get through college with Pell Grants and student loans, showing them how to fill out complicated FAFSA paperwork. Blooming Butterflies Puckett and a group of volunteers serve women through confidential shelter referrals. “Many of our women are found by board members on an everyday routine in life,” she says. They currently go to 11 confidential locations helping individual women, teens, children and senior citizens. “Together, we are making a difference in their lives.” Money directly benefits community seniors with warm clothing for the winter months along with minor home repairs, which some seniors desperately need, as well as battered women who are transitioning to economic and emotional stability receive professional work attire and supportive assistance as they re-enter the career world.

Don’t Ride Your Rockets By Dr. Lynn Lewis Having an opinion, a self-perceived great idea, or a project that you are passionate about is like shooting a rocket up into the sky. Sometimes, people love it, they are impressed, your opinion/idea/project is affirmed, and you bask in the glow of glory. However, sometimes, people do not like it. They attempt to shoot it down, and, if they are successful, you bask in the glittering glow of falling debris. All of which is not a problem . . . unless you are on your rocket. Certainly, riding rockets is appealing. It was quite impressive when—on May 5, 1961—Alan Shepard climbed on top of a Redstone rocket and strapped himself into the Freedom 7 spacecraft and became the first American to successfully travel into space. It was ambitious and exciting when President John F. Kennedy announced a few weeks later—on May 25, 1961— that the United States intended to strap more people onto rockets and successfully land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth before the end of the decade. And, it was incredulous when Neil Armstrong—on July 20, 1969—became the first man to walk on the moon, and return safely to earth as planned. However, riding rockets has generally been the domain of the few and the brave, as it should be. Once, when God had given King David rest from all his enemies, David had what he thought was a great idea: he wanted to build a temple for the Lord. He said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent” (2 Samuel 7:1-2). However, God shot David’s idea down and, instead,

gave that honor to his son, Solomon. Instead of taking it personally, pouting, getting angry, or feeling necessarily hurt, David responded with humility, a profound sense of gratitude, and a prayerful spirit of worship. He also did all he could

to help prepare for his son’s success in the endeavor. By not riding his rocket, he avoided personal devastation when it was shot down. When the Apostle Paul—with good intent and a passionate desire to preach the Gospel in Asia—was prevented from doing so by the Holy Spirit, he responded by answering the call to go somewhere else (Acts 16:6-10). The “Spirit of Jesus” shot down his rocket, and since he wasn’t on it, he was free to continue his passionate journey unfazed. When Abraham gallantly sought to save the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah from destruction decreed upon them for their wickedness by bargaining with the Lord for their lives, he did not ride his own rocket. After Abraham and the Lord agreed on the terms of avoiding destruction altogether if the Lord could find at least ten righteous people in the entire the city of Sodom, they parted ways. The next day, when Abraham returned to the place of their meeting and saw the dense smoke of destruction rising from the plain, he did not take it personally. In fact, the Scripture notes that “Abraham moved on from there.” (Genesis 18:16 – 20:1)

What about you? When someone shoots down your rocket, are you able to stand aside and watch the glittering explosion and sparkling fallout of debris and join others in saying, “Wow! That was spectacular!” and then move on? Our challenge is that we like our ideas, our passions, and our projects. We integrate our sense of self into what we write, say, sing, play, build, produce, raise and nurture. We pour ourselves into something, and are damaged when others take potshots at it, or worse, destroy it. There is a better way. Get off your rocket. Fire off as many as you want, but don’t take it personally when others shoot them down. Even when people attempt to make it personal —and they will—seek to avoid the trap of taking things personally and feeling wounded. Also, pay attention. Sometimes, other people are right, and God is always right. Maybe it was a bad opinion, idea, passion, project, or belief. Maybe something needs tweaking. Maybe it is not the right time. Maybe you are flat out wrong. Maybe you are right, but standing with the wrong crowd. And maybe—like multitudes throughout history who have worked hard and paid attention to both their failures and successes with a goal of continual improvement—you can learn something while observing from your well-grounded position, and no matter what happens, move on.

God in Film—Based in Texas! By Ruth Towns In the world of film, people crave family and faith-based projects—proven by the mega-hit The Bible, a television miniseries produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. The weekly broadcast ran between March 3 and March 31, 2013 on the History channel, delivering blockbuster ratings for the network. In total (with subsequent airings) The Bible has been seen by more than 95 million viewers. This astoundingly popular show proves to Hollywood and the world that there is a strong market for faith (versus filth). Interestingly, Texas is home to a handful of Christian filmmakers, each with their own productions. If you love movies and want a large selection in your home, check out the following. You may be familiar with some of the movie titles, and if not, try these faith-based films produced by fellow Christians and suitable for family viewing. Most are geared toward younger audiences—perfect for a summer when school is out and kids need entertainment. Creation 6 (creation6.com) This studio has produced Sarah’s Hope, a film that provides an alternative for teens. In a world that is big on “science” and short on “truth,” teens today need a solid foundation of belief that offers real
hope...not just for this life but for eternity. Sarah’s Hope is a heartwarming film about the struggles, faith and redemption of a 16-yearold girl named Sarah, who lost her sister Lauren a year ago in a car accident. Rated PG, this 27-minute film presents lasting truths that truly provide hope for hurting hearts. Echo Light Studios (echolight.com) Producing and distributing high-quality faith and family-friendly entertainment is the specialty of this studio. They have a robust portfolio of films, including the following Christian film choices: 1 Message, 25 Hill, 3 Day Test, Another Perfect Stranger, A Wobots Christmas, Beyond the Heavens, Clancy, Foolishness, I am Gabriel, The Redemption of Henry Myers, Seasons of Gray, The Perfect Gift, The Perfect Stranger, The Potential Inside, The Stranger (TV Series), Undaunted, Welcome to Paradise. Heu Moore Films (heumoore.com) Hue Moore Films has produced some lighthearted family films, including The Widow’s Might in which an elderly Widow faces losing her home to the outrageous property taxes in her area. The Moore family takes action along with their friends, the Morton family. Through political smears, on set mishaps, and a wild western ride, these families band together in a classic black hat/white hat tale of heroism!

Siblings: Heartstrings is nearly an hour long and not just a fun adventure for the kids; it’s also a touching tale of a father and son. Heartstrings will move you to tears with a multigenerational treasure being passed on. A Lifetime of Childlike Faith is a documentary about a humble man, Leonard Knight, whose work has captured the interest of such greats as National Geographic, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and the Discovery Channel. It tells the true story of the simple man behind Salvation Mountain, and how his faith has driven him to do the seemingly impossible without even the benefit of electricity or running water. The DVD release of the film contains the 35-minute documentary and a short video tour of Salvation Mountain by Leonard Knight. Siblings: Bubble Trouble features seven-year-old Gator Moore, who is unable to beat his brothers at chess and concludes that if he knew what his opponents were thinking, he could defeat them. He dreams up a contraption to help him read thoughts, but in the end he realizes that such tasks are best left up to God. This film was created for the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival. It runs 36 minutes on DVD. Siblings: What a Blast is based on the amazing things can be wrought in two hours, especially when your siblings are involved! This 17-minute film depicts one of the not so rare misadventures that can occur when the parents aren’t home!
Cowboys and Jesus is a modern day telling of the story of the prodigal son. It centers around two brothers, Nick (World Champion Bull Rider Scott Mendes), and Mark, (Scott McClard), and a competition for their father’s love. Rodeo and high school football is the backdrop for this action packed drama that the whole family can see. The Adventures of Quickdraw Pete features a part-time deputy and full time good guy in the town of Apple Junction. Rated “F” for FUN, each episode includes Christian morals, humor, and good manners. Onion Creek is set in the late 1800’s she the West was an open territory. Towns sprang up, ranching flourished, homesteading boomed, yet the West was still a wild country. It took a special breed of men and women to tame it. A battle between good and evil has Texas Jack Nolan, Tater Owens, and Tater’s friend, Indian Joe, tracking the meanest gunmen of the West. Supporting the Good Guys! Supporting Christian films not only bolsters faith, but helps independent film makers continue to produce family entertainment that edifies and enhances the values of young viewers. Hate Mongering? By Bill Kneer As Christians, we are to love the sinner, but not the sin. We all sin, but believers fight daily to overcome and live as the Bible says we should. We are to reject sin and not embrace it, no matter the pressures we face. This is what Jesus instructed in His kind and gentle way. This becomes a political issue, especially when candidates do not align with conservative views, which often overlap with Biblical views. How do we attempt to bring together the varied voices within the Christian community and the conservative movement? Should we? Or should we stand firm and solid in our core beliefs and the Republican platform? Should Republicans continue to be the party of unflinching values, or cave to moderates and liberals? After all, progressives certainly want us to “come over to their side.” As voters, we have choices to make, some very difficult. As the homosexual community steadily demands acceptance, they present views diabolically opposed to staunchly conservative values. A bridge of sorts has been built between the homosexual community and the Republican Party, namely the Log Cabin Republicans. This anomaly within the ranks poses an enigma, for the Log Cabin Republicans agree with much, but not all, of the party’s platform. Many of these members are wonderful people who choose a lifestyle outside the values we, as conservative Christians, hold dear. Do we vote in “nice” people who don’t share our Biblical views? Or do we
vote in candidates who do? The bottom line is that we must vote our personal conscience, regardless of the uproar swirling around us. From precinct chairs to the Republican nominee for the presidency of the United States, each voter is tasked to decide who best represents their hearts, values and wallets—in short, what they envision for society and future generations. Personally, I have stood for and will continue to stand for what is right, based on Biblical principals and my own conscience, and so should you. How we vote is not a reflection of hate and fear... it’s about Christians standing firm in our biblical beliefs, even when a subtle and insidious enemy will lie and cheat to harm us, and undermine what we believe. It’s easy to slide down a slippery slope. It’s much harder to resist an encroaching national “embrace” of this secular, “anything goes” morality—or lack of morality.
For the last 50 years at Tradition Bank, we’ve known that community service and support for local businesses and organizations matter. We’re proud to work in a community where so many others do too.

This lack of morality trickles up to the Obama Administration. Recently, it was reported that military personnel were denied access to coverage of the Southern Baptist Convention, because the “Pentagon”—which is covering for the administration—has labeled Southern Baptists “hate groups.” Why? Because they oppose homosexual behavior. This is bigotry in reverse, a worldview gone upside down and launching political grenades at decent folks who share a Christian faith. It is evil, plain and simple, especially the persecution of military men and women who dare to pray to Jesus Christ and are threatened with court martial when they do. This means Christian men and women who face death in battle aren’t allowed to express their beliefs, yet a double standard exists, because Muslim military members are allowed to pray. Evangelical denominations and Catholics are on the terror watch list, but you won’t hear much of this on MSNBC. It’s up to alternative news sources, including conservative blogs (and sporadic reporting by Fox News), to get the word out. Which brings me back to core values. It concerns me that many Christians are sitting back and staying out of the fight. They decline to “take sides” and strive to be tolerant. Some Christian conservatives are afraid of being branded homophobic or called hate-mongering bigots. Name-calling is a tool often used by adversaries to weaken, embarrass or even threaten us. But at this point in the nation’s history, we recognize political correctness for what it is—censorship, a ploy foisted upon us to control and muzzle our voices. We can either bow down, or stand up for what we know in our hearts to be right. I would like to encourage more believers to stand up and be counted. Our support of virtue matters greatly and is more important than the slings and arrows that pour down upon us simply because we have unshakable faith in the word of God.
We MUST stand together as believers in our Lord, NOT because we hate sinners, but because we love them and do not want to see them live and die without hope. If you saw a stranger standing in the road and looking at the ground while a bus hurtles toward him, would you leave him alone with no hope? Or would the loving thing be to yell at him—warn him—of the harm coming his way? Perhaps it’s time to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, and enlighten those who face “the bus,” warning them that they would be wise to change their position, and fast! We are to let the light of Christ shine in us, and we are to bring light into the world, not by condoning sin, but by resisting it. Moral relativism has brought us to a disastrous point, and it’s time to take separate the wheat from the chaff. You do not have to vote in candidates who reject your personal ethics. You can tell them why they did not get your vote, and you don’t need to apologize for faithfully following the edicts of your faith. We are to engage in this battle for souls, and whether we win or lose is not the point. God instructed us to run the race, and that’s what matters. The outcome is up to HIM, and faithfulness is up to us. Paul in his letter to the Philippians says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Bill Kneer is the founder of the Patriot Statesman (patriotstatesman.com), 0593 precinct chair, a member of the Harris County Republican Party Vacancy Committee, and owner of Bill Kneer Marketing and Business Development (billkneer. com). Building a Solid Life By G.F. Watkins Powerhouse Church Oysters tenaciously attach themselves to a ROCK larger than themselves. Then no punishing wave or violent storm can sweep them away. What a great analogy for the need of all people to be connected to a stable God that is much, much larger than we are! Jesus said in Matthew 16:18, “Upon this rock I’ll build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it!” Another great verse dealing with building a solid life is found in Matthew chapter 7: 24. “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:29 For he taught them as one having

Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego, who were thrown into the fire, with God on your side, you win. Sometimes wining is responding with class to a hard challenge in front of those you are witnessing to. “Personality is who we are when the lights are on. Character is who we are when the light is off.” Men seem to have a more difficult time with attaching ourselves to Big Rocks, than women do. We are more loners. This is why it’s so important to have a man in your life you trust. A man that you can know is not in competition with you. A man that will teach you and even correct you if you need it.
“Obedience is Gods method of protection and blessing for our lives.” It’s His desire that we follow his Word in detail so that we can win in life and be a great example to the lost world of what this Solid Life looks like. Now before you jump to conclusions of what the term winning means, let me clarify. Winning in life doesn’t mean that you are never persecuted, never make a mistake, never have a challenge, etc. What it means is that just like with the three Hebrew boys

Local Christian Student Highlights Connor Lyttle
Classification: Senior Texas Christian High School Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Inspired by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s family chose Texas Christian because it was a good match academically to equip Connor to pursue whatever avenue he might choose, whether it be college or vocational studies. Connor’s favorite subject was Creation Science taught by retired United States Marine MSgt James Rankin. Through this very informative and challenging class, Connor said he learned “More about God, His creation and the real facts of life; coming into existence through Divine wisdom, intelligent design, and supernatural creation.” Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball, and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life’s challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff, and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”
David Steele
Classification: Senior Faith West Academy In fiction, the mission of Superman is to help everyone and make the world a better place to live regardless of personal sacrifice. In reality that is the mission of our men and women in the military, firemen, and police officers. David Steele has taken that as his mission. He has completed six credit hours of Emergency Medical Technician training and 15-18 hours of training per week for 16 weeks at the Firefighter Academy (the youngest in his class). On July 16 Steele will report to the United States Air Force for basic training. After military basic training he will receive intense training for the USAF PARARESCUE Team. After seventeen months of PARARESCUE ‘Pipeline’ Training (that will take him to San Antonio, Florida, Washington, New Mexico, and Georgia) Steele will be ready to provide emergency medical treatment necessary to stabilize and evacuate injured personnel while acting in an enemy evading recovery role. Before graduating from high school, David has already responded to numerous emergency situations; vehicle rescue with the ‘Jaws of Life’, cardiac arrest calls, warehouse explosion, suicide calls, fire alarms, trauma patients, and false alarms. Minimum requirements to be accepted into the PARARESCUE Pipeline are swim 25 meters underwater on one breath, swim 1,000 meters sidestroke or freestyle in 26 minutes or under, run 1.5 miles in under 10 minutes and 30 seconds, pull off eight chin-ups in a minute or less, do 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes or less, pound out 50 push-ups in 2 minutes or less, complete 50 flutter kicks in 2 minutes or less.
Katy Christian Magazine will be highlighting local Christian students each issue and we need your help! We’re currently accepting nominations for outstanding elementary, middle school, and high school students to be featured in Katy Christian Magazine. To nominate yourself or someone else, please send an email to joseph@houstonchristianmagazine.com with a short bio and photo. The students bio should include their name, school, grade, church, and life goals. If applicable, please include information about sports, hobbies, and activities as well.

Dear Doctor: From Crayons to College By Dr. Jennifer Gwozdz Dear Doctor: What shots does my child need to start kindergarten in the Fall? Dear Patient: I know summer time is busy with vacations, baseballs, cook outs, and camps! However, before you hit the road with your summer plans bring your children in early to the doctors for their back to school physicals and vaccinations. Children entering pre-K or kindergarten will need a wellchild checkup and four (4) shots: DTaP, Polio, Measles, and Chickenpox. Eleven to twelve year olds entering 7th grade require a tetanus booster called Tdap and a meningitis vaccine. The nurse will also check the status of any other needed booster shots that your child may be missing. Students up to age 30 entering college in Texas, will also require a meningitis vaccine. A school or sports physical ensures that your child is healthy to play sports. These check ups are even more important if your child does not play a sport, as physical inactivity leads to obesity and childhood diabetes, both on the rise in Texas. There is no co-pay for wellness check-ups, so take advantage of this doctor’s visit to ensure your child stays well for a lifetime! For information please contact Dr. Jennifer Gwozdz and Family Clinic, at 281-395-3044 or visit our website familyclinichouston.com.

Katy, The City of Churches By Ruth Towns Many years ago, drivers along Hwy. 90 were greeted by a sign that heralded, “Welcome to Katy the City of Churches.” At that time, 12 churches were in existence and all 12 were listed on the sign. Boy, the more things change, the more things stay the same. The sign is gone, but more churches have sprung up in our faith-based community—many more than could ever appear on one sign—proving that Katy, indeed, is a city of many, many churches, faiths and denominations. Katy is a bit of an anomaly, blending old and new. Most readers know that the actual City of Katy is quite small, often referred to as Old Town Katy, Old Katy, the Heart of Katy, or Katy Proper. The surrounding area is just that… the “Katy Area”—a large and sprawling suburb buzzing with commerce and vast amounts of subdivisions. Both areas are filled with churches, complete with any kind of denomination a worshipper seeks: Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Church of Christ, Episcopalian, nondenominational and more. Perhaps this is why Katy is also known as “The Town with a Heart.”
ing back to the late 1800s when the area was a prairie. But those early settlers brought with them their beliefs. They planted the seeds of community that exist today in our tri-county area, connecting Waller, Harris and Fort Bend Counties. All brim with places of worship, some quite old and some brand new. Some residents gather in established brick and mortar churches, while others meet in commercial buildings or at junior high or high school campuses. Some churches began in people’s houses. In fact, both the Baptist and Methodist congregations organized in 1898 and met in homes until 1904, the year the Methodist church was built, followed by the First Baptist Church of Katy. Another historic church, Trinity Apostolic Faith, met in homes in 1905, then purchased the old one-room schoolhouse in 1909. They now worship at the corner of Avenue D and Tenth Street in Old Town Katy. In an increasingly secular nation, it’s nice to be nestled in Katy, a place that values Christian beliefs and makes worship a priority. On any given Sunday, hymns and prayers abound and are surely pleasing to God’s ear. We are blessed, us Katyites, with an economy that has fared better than most… perhaps because Katy truly is a remarkable city of churches.
Small town values are deeply woven into the fabric of Katy, extend-

Katy Teen to Attend West Point By Staff Writer Faith West Academy senior Stan Stanulonis, 19, has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He will report for duty with another FWA alumnus, Eric Pearson (class of 2009), and 1,150 new cadets for this incoming class of 2017. John Talhelm, admission representative for West Point and West Point Cadet - Class of 1973, was on hand 5/28 for the formal presentation on behalf of the President of the United States and the Superintendent of West Point, LTG David Huntoon, Jr. “Over fifteen thousand young men and women applied,” said Talhelm. “This appointment is valued at $440,000 over the course of a four year program where Cadets can choose from 45 academic majors that span a broad spectrum of academic disciplines.” “It truly was a group effort in getting his appointment. It may not have happened if Sandye Reed (History Department Head at FWA) didn’t make it possible for him to go to Boy’s State which is an accomplishment that carries a lot of weight,” said Stan’s mother Michelle Stanulonis. She elaborated that many played a role in Stan’s appointment; “Mrs. Reed, Coach Stephon Leary, Flenoyd Turner, Charles Crawford and Diane Williams, wrote letters for Stan to Congressman Michael T. McCaul, 10th District, who later gave him a nomination. Christina
Martin, Denise Best, and Jeanna Bickerstaff wrote teacher’s appraisals. Mark Lamendola also sent a letter of recommendation. And Kim Derry was extremely helpful as Stan’s counselor and as such the point-person for the (Faith West) Academy.” “Stan is one of our most outstanding students,” says FWA Principal Mary Strickland. “He has an unwavering commitment to excellence as he has demonstrated in the classroom on the sports field, and in his other extracurricular activities.” Stanulonis is an accomplished trumpet player taking State Superior Ratings for the last two years. Also, Stanulonis’ interests include basketball and cross country. He was the president of the 2012-2013 FWA Chapter of the National Honor Society. Stan is the son of Stanley and Michelle Stanulonis of Katy. The U. S. Military Academy at West Point is a fouryear co-educational federal undergraduate liberal arts college located 50 miles north of New York City. It was founded in 1802 as America’s first college of engineering and is world-renown for leader development. Its mission remains constant—to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, and Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the U. S. Army. For more information, go to www.usma.edu.

Father’s Day Funnies By Ruth Towns We might assume Father’s Day has been around forever, but that’s not exactly the case. According to history.com, Richard Nixon, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday in 1972. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts! Of course, fathers are worth every penny. But more than gifts, they love their families gathered around, especially during an afternoon spent laughing out loud. Who says Christians don’t have a sense of humor? Whether it’s June 16th (Father’s Day 2013) or any day of the year, treat Dad to some side-splitting laughter! Check out this slate of Christian comedians who will entertain Dad and the whole family. The Top Five Christian comedians manage to keep the message clean and still crack us up. The five following comedians are notably hilarious: Tim Hawkins, Bob Smiley, Chondra Pierce, Ken Davis and Anita Renfroe. A simple click on their websites or a quick search for their You Tube videos will have the whole family giggling. Tim Hawkins (timhawkins.net) Tim brings the funny to fans at 100+ concerts in 30+ states a year. Grants From JC Penney Helps Area Children Participate in YMCA Afterschool Programs By Staff Writer The Katy and Fort Bend Family YMCAs each received a $5,000 grant from jcp cares, jcpenney’s new charitable giving program, to provide school-aged children with financial assistance to attend afterschool programs at the Y. Specifically, the gifts are providing children at the Y afterschool programs at Stafford Elementary, Stafford, TX, and Schmalz Elementary, Katy, TX, with financial assistance to participate. The children that qualified for the assistance would not have been able to otherwise participate without the support of this grant. More importantly, it is providing the supported children with access to life-enriching afterschool programs that cultivate the values, relationships and skills kids need to thrive. According to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization, 15.1 million U.S. children are left unsupervised after 3 p.m. during the school year. Studies show participation in afterschool programs helps boost school attendance and academic performance and reduces gaps in academic achievement among children from disadvantaged households. “As a company founded on the Golden Rule, jcpenney has a strong legacy of giving back,” said Miki Woodard, president of jcp cares and vice president of philanthropy at jcpenney. “We are firmly committed to organizations like the Y, which truly make a difference in their communities.”
The Bible Seminary
The YMCA sees the benefits of this collaboration first-hand. “The support of jcpenney enhances our efforts to serve as many children as possible with meaningful, high-quality afterschool programming,” says Brian Haines, Katy YMCA District Executive. Eric Schenkelberg, Fort Bend YMCA District Executive, stated, “By working together we can not only keep children safer, but also help provide them with lasting benefits, including healthier lifestyles, improved social skills and an enhanced academic performance.” Collectively, the YMCAs of Greater Houston serve over 10,000 children per day in child care at more than 200 locations with 40% receiving financial assistance to participate. Locally, the Katy and Fort Bend YMCAs operate over 22 licensed afterschool programs in the Katy and Stafford school districts. For more information about the YMCA’s afterschool program, visit them on the web at (www.ymcahouston.org). To learn more about jcp cares, jcpenney’s charitable giving program, go to (www.jcp.com).

Katy Christian Magazine Calendar of Events June A. D. Players presents “Malcolm and Teresa” May 22 - June 23 A. D. Players Grace Theater 2710 W. Alabama St. Houston, TX 77098 adplayers.org The riveting true story of BBC Reporter Malcolm Muggeridge and the television interviews with Mother Teresa that changed his life. A staunch supporter of the idealistic values of the new Soviet political system in the 30’s, Muggeridge eagerly sets out to report from the Soviet Union, only to find that millions are starving in the Ukraine as a result of the Soviet’s policies. Years later, he interviews a thenunknown Mother Teresa, whose way of serving the poor will open many eyes to suffering around the world. Engrossing and entertaining, this new play powerfully displays one man’s journey to faith and the broad impact of faith in action.

“But i don’t FEEL normal!” Carol’s Story I always thought I had a thyroid problem. Ever since the first set of symptoms started revealing themselves, which began right after the birth of our third child, I knew something was off. Exhaustion began to slowly creep up on me until it finally consumed me. It was draining. I have never experienced anything quite like it. No matter how many naps I took or how long I slept, it was still there. At first I blamed the fact that I was raising three children and holding down a full time job…who wouldn’t be exhausted? Then the next phase of symptoms began to roll in. I was cold all the time! It would be August in Texas and I’d be wearing a jacket to work. My hair and eyebrows began to thin out. Oh, and the brain fog. I honestly thought my memory loss was the first sign that I had Alzheimer’s. Over coffee with a friend, something I was consuming way too much of, I discussed with her what was happening to me. She said that it sounded like a thyroid issue, something I had always thought. Naturally, I went to my doctor, explained my symptoms and told him that I thought I was hypothyroid. He ran some tests, took blood work and scheduled my recheck. Two weeks later he told me that my blood work was normal. “But I don’t feel normal,” I told him. “Are you sure those results are right?” His answer was “yes,” and he offered me a prescription for an antidepressant. I told him, “No way!” While online, I stumbled upon the Hotze Health & Wellness Center website. It felt like it was written for me. I discovered that they used an innovative approach in diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. I scheduled my appointment and was blown away by their professionalism. They explained to me that my symptoms were very common in women in my age group. They discovered that I had an imbalance in my female hormones that adversely affected my body’s ability to use thyroid hormones. I was prescribed bio-identical progesterone, estrogen and natural thyroid medication.
Within two months, my life was transformed. My energy was back. I can keep up with my kids, husband and job. My fading memory returned to normal and I was finally able to sleep soundly again. I got my life back! If this sounds like something you or someone you love has been experiencing, it’s not “all in your head” and you don’t have to just deal with it as a part of getting older.
