Not too long ago, I heard a story about a Pastor who served as a Chaplin in a Texas prison. One day, as Mother’s Day drew near, one of the prisoners approached the Chaplin and asked if he could get a Mother’s Day card for his mother. The Chaplin happily provided him with one. This news spread quickly amongst all the prisoners, and ultimately almost all of them asked the Chaplin for cards. He gladly helped them as well. He said to himself, “this has been an incredible ministry opportunity! I’ve been trying to reach these guys for some time without much success.” With Father’s Day in less than six weeks, he thought ahead and ordered cards for their dads. Much to his dismay Father’s Day came and went without a single prisoner requesting a card. That speaks volumes as to why some of them were imprisoned in the first place. It’s our responsibility to “train up a child in the way he/she should go.” Not the school, not the government, but us as parents; fathers. The role of a dad runs far deeper than blood- it takes more than simply having children to be a father. Be a part of their life. Be someone that they are proud to proclaim, “This is my dad!” Scripture teaches that who we are and how we live is like a “letter from God.” Our kids read that letter, each and every day. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” – Ephesians 6:4 Joseph R. Sunshine Benefit at KVPAC for Katy Area Flood Victims Katy, TEXAS – Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center (KVPAC) organized a benefit on Friday, April 29 at 7:00pm at KVPAC’s main location on South Mason Road, to help local victims of the recent flooding. The special performance included a musical variety show titled Call It Sunshine, showcasing some of Katy’s most musically talented residents. All proceeds raised from the event were sent directly to Katy Christian Ministries (KCM), as Katy families have turned to them for support in times of need. “As Katy’s community theatre, the staff felt very strongly about doing something to help,” said Gregory Magyar, KVPAC’s Executive Artistic Director. “Since KCM is so directly and immediately involved in helping those most impacted in our community, we thought it would be the perfect place to start.” Recent rain storms caused such severe flooding that both Harris and Fort Bend counties (among others) were declared a state of disaster by the governor. Many homes took in water and even more are left without power. In conjunction with the benefit performance, KVPAC has also organized a Restaurant Gift Card Drive for KCM so families without power or access to their flooded kitchens can take their families out for a hot meal. We are encouraging the general public to donate restaurant gift cards.
Gift cards can be dropped off at KVPAC during business hours Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 7:00pm, or an ear-marked donation can be made on-line at www.kvpac.org at any time. VPAC is a 501c3 non-profit arts education organization serving the Katy community since 2001. We are located at 2501 S Mason Rd, # 290, Katy, TX 77450 in the Great Southwest Equestrian Center Complex. Our second location is at 2600 Hwy 6 South, Houston, TX 77082, Suite # 504.

Former International and Collegiate Baseball Coach Hopes to Change Lives One Athlete at a Time By Jessa McClure Texas native, Jeremy Browning, was a natural athlete growing up in Odessa, TX. He found a love for baseball, and even found himself playing at the college level with hopes of being drafted to the major leagues. But Browning said he knows now that God’s plan was different than the one he had planned for himself. The baseball player blew out his shoulder during his sophomore year in college, which ruined his chances of making it to the big leagues. But Browning didn’t give up on his dream of being a top athlete. “I started taking summer strength and conditioning courses,” he said. “With this training and having worked with some of the best baseball coaches in the country, I was able to put together a good baseball resume.” After graduation, Browning moved to Toronto and became a coach for the Ontario Blue Jays—an amateur baseball program. And while he was there, he used his

Baseball Legend Nolan Ryan Says... “When we replaced our windows with the Simonton windows, they blended with the house really well. We like the insulating factor that we get, especially in Texas, with the heat we have in the summertime and the drop in temperature that we get in the winter. The windows we had previously didn’t hold up well and didn’t do the job that we wanted from an insulating factor. Ruth chose the color, and we were really pleased with the way they turned out because we had a darker window before.”

skills as a strength training expert to help train Olympic athletes including figure skaters and hockey players. His work with the Blue Jays led to a chance meeting with the recruiting coordinator for North Carolina State University. “[The recruiter] really wanted me because I not only had the baseball background, but the strength and conditioning background as well,” he said. From there he was to the University of Montevallo and turned the baseball team around, helping them reach the World Series. It was here that he met two young students who were passionate about starting a strength and conditioning business that would help people transform not only their bodies, but their minds and spirits. They called their business Iron Tribe Fitness, and although Browning was intrigued by their idea, he continued to climb the ladder of success in the athletic world, even building his own baseball team called the Dallas Dragons. It was after this experience that Browning decided to further his education by receiving an MBA in pharmaceutical sales. “I did really well,” he said. “But I was working all of the time, eating terribly and living on everyone else’s schedule but my own. My own health took a dive, and I became the largest I’d ever been.” Browning was miserable in his new body and felt like he was no longer living his best life. He was laid off from his

job soon after and realized that his lack of a job gave him the opportunity to pursue something he believed in and get his health back on track. The former baseball coach got in touch with some of his former players who had started Iron Tribe Fitness, and said he was interested in starting a franchise in his home state of Texas. With the help of a business partner, Browning was able to start the process of bringing the Alabama-based fitness company to the Houston area.
June / July 2016
“Working in the medical field, I saw so many people who had no hope,” Browning said. “I saw that Iron Tribe was making an impact not only on a physical level, but on a mental and spiritual level as well. I wanted to have that kind of impact, too.” Iron Tribe focuses on cardio, weight lifting, and body weight movement. But what really sets the strength training facility apart from other gyms is the highly-trained coaches, a community culture, and a class structure that facilitates a team mentality, Browning said. Through his work in bringing this unique fitness experience to his home state, Browning has reaped the benefits of the Iron Tribe program. “It’s been a blessing to me and my family,” he said. “I got my health back. I’m fitter and leaner than I was even in college. I took charge of my health again.” Browning said Iron Tribe isn’t just an ordinary gym. It’s a strength training experience that is truly a family. “We are a tribe of athletes with one common goal. That goal is to become the best, healthiest versions of ourselves,” he said. “It’s not about being the biggest or the strongest. The measure of our strength is how we pick up that last person and push them ahead.”

Not only does Browning’s new business help to support each athlete who comes to the Cinco Ranch location, but it also provides an environment where people feel free to live out their Christian faith. “One of our core values is creating lasting relationships, which help us to be comfortable sharing our faith,” he said. “We want to know your ‘why,’ and why you’re committed to getting healthier.” Browning said he can relate to those who have let the stresses and busyness of life get in the way of achieving a healthy lifestyle. “I can show each athlete what [Iron Tribe] did for me personally,” he said. “And it’s an opportunity to share my testimony.” The lifelong athlete hopes that all those who come to Iron Tribe will not only find a place where they can find a positive culture, but a place where they can find the motivation to lead healthier lives. “I want to help change the world one person at a time,” Browning said. The Cinco Ranch facility has already broken the record for fastest growth for the first month in only three full weeks of business. “I fully believe this is God placing people in our lives who need real life change through proper nutrition, personalized group training and accountability,” Browning said.

Honor @ Home: Keys to Good Decisions By Pastor Jorge Cardenas Your life is a result of the sum of your own decisions taken in the past. It is true that some decisions were taken on your behalf without your input or control from the time you were born until you started impacting your own destiny. It is true that we have collaborated on our demise and struggles by taking wrong decisions. We all have stories to tell about the price we paid when a wrong decision affected our well-being. Have you ever said “ I wish I had not said that, or I wish I had not done so?” We do find actions and words that have caused us and others more harm than good. Therefore, in order to make good decisions when we faced dilemmas, we must learn to take practical steps to discover the best alternatives. The first step has to do with prayer. A disciple of Christ anticipates with prayer every step of the decision-making process. Prayer has many rewards. It helps us discover God’s will in our lives. His will is good, pleasing and perfect. His moral will is established in his Word, the Bible. Certainly, beyond the moral
will, we must also discover our individual will. Sometimes we are at a crossroad of two or more moral alternatives. At such moments, we must formulate a practical plan to help us identify the best possible option. The second critical step is to seek counsel with qualified indi-

viduals. As you select your circle of counsel, make sure you find people who care for you and are willing to share their wisdom without any bias. For example, a wife who is upset with her husband about a particular delicate matter, should avoid going
to her mother for help. Mom is going to side with her, that is her nature. Consequently, the husband’s image will be tarnished and the mother in-law will have future uncomfortable issues with her son in-law. On the other hand, a young mother can ask her mom for advice regarding children’s upbringing. This is when a grandmother’s love and experience can help. Thirdly, make a written and well-investigated plan. One thing is to think about a decision, and another is when you place ideas in some sort of writing. Something amazing happens to our mental capacity when we place ideas and alternatives in writing. We may do a brainstorming chart with diagrams and words. Also we can do a cost-and-benefits analysis. Invariably keep people in mind, and make sure your decisions do not hurt other people who count on you. A selfish decision is the beginning of many tragedies in relationships. Finally, avoid certain pitfalls when taking a serious deci-

sion. For instance, do not make decisions based on fear, pain, anger, pride or pressure from others. Do not let stress from other individuals influence your decisions. Do not let anger or personal pain mix with your ability to decide. Likewise, do not let pride drive your decisions. It is dangerous to take a decision with a mind-set that says: “I will show them how capable or superior is my idea or project.” Instead, we must be well-informed and humbled when making a final decision. We want our decision to make a difference for the good of our destiny and others who will also benefit. Remember, if you ever make a decision which ends in failure, learn from it, take responsibility, and make adjustments. But most of all, honor God with all your decisions.

Stroke Scan Plus Prevents Disease, Educates Communities By Jessa McClure When Maria and Diego Ramirez went to a friend’s house to enjoy playing music, they didn’t know they were about to begin a journey that would lead them to save countless lives. In 2001, at that very important jam session, the couple met a musician who had been laid off and was looking for a place to live. “At the time, I was renovating a town home that I had recently purchased,” Diego said. “I told him I’d let him live there if he helped me renovate the home.” The man was a sonographer and had been working for a company doing preventative screenings. Diego Ramirez and his
new tenant became friends and began discussing the possibility of starting their own scanning company. “So, I got the financing together, and within a few months we started the business out of [the town home],” he said.

The business, which is called Stroke Scan Plus, uses harmless and painless ultrasound technology to look inside a patient’s arteries and organs for plaque and disease before it presents with any physical symptoms. “We’re able to see if you have the beginnings of an aneurysm, or cysts or nodules that could later become malignant.” The couple employs radiologists who interpret the exam, and certified sonographers who perform the scans. And although the company first began in a town home, it now has a Texasbased office in Katy and five mobile units who perform scans in 40 different states. The Ramirez’s and their staff have scanned more than 200,000 people in the 15 years they have been in business, and continually hear success stories from those they have scanned. Tammie Rushing signed up for a scan for a pharmaceutical discount over her normal hospital administered test, and found that she had a severe blockage in her Carotid artery. Feeling no symptoms, Rushing went to her medical doctor, and he ordered a similar test. “From that appointment I was sent to a cardiologist who per-
formed a heart cath and found that I had a 99 percent blockage,” she said. “I was taken immediately to surgery, and the artery was taken out, repaired and replaced.” Ramirez said he’s heard stories like Rushing’s over and over again, and that patients who receive the scan often don’t know they are sick. “Typically people are asymptomatic. They may know that somebody in their family died of stroke or aneurysm, but they aren’t feeling badly,” he said. “If we can find plaque and catch the

blockage early, then we can reduce the number of strokes and aneurysms by finding that disease in the arteries.” Educating communities about the scans and the effects of these diseases can also help to save lives, Ramirez said. “Studies show that if a community is aware of the risk factors of strokes and aneurysms then they can make lifestyle changes,” he said. “Eighty percent of strokes can be prevented by lifestyle changes.” Ramirez and his staff aren’t only passionate about helping build stronger, healthier communities through education and preventative screenings, but they are also passionate about their faith. “We pray a lot,” he said. “We always rely on God for our guidance. We know that anything that happens—good or bad— is God’s will.” Ramirez said he and his wife not only go to God for all of their big decisions, but they also ask their employees to do the
same. “It’s important for us to do a good job, and provide a good service,” Ramirez said. “I would hope that somebody would invite us to their company, organization, club, or church, and help us offer our services to their constituents.” If you are interested in the services offered at Stroke Scan Plus please call (832) 437-7355.

Dear Doctor: What is “Swimmer’s Ear” and How Can I Prevent It? By Dr. Behrooz Saffari Swimmer’s ear or Otitis Externa is an acute infection and inflammation of the ear canal. Patients with Otitis Externa typically are presented with an acute ear pain with or without discharge or decreased hearing. Bacterial infections are the most common cause of Otitis Externa. Additional causes include idiopathic, swimming, earwax buildup, trauma, chemical irritants, fungal infection and others. The treatment is directed towards the cause of Otitis Externa and it is usually treated with 7 to 10 days of topical antibiotics prescribed by a physician. There are a few simple things that can be done to reduce the risk of getting Otitis Externa. Consider wearing occlusive earplugs when swimming. For those patients who have recurrent cerumen impaction or buildup of ear wax, removal of earwax regularly by a physician is highly recommended. Avoid using the common ear cotton-tipped swabs for ear cleaning since they may cause irritation of the ear canal and potential risk for Otitis Externa.
Dr. Behrooz Saffari is a Family Medicine Physician for the UT Health Science Center at Houston and provides patient care at UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. To schedule an appointment, please call 713-486-5300.

First French and Spanish Christian School in Texas Opens Its Doors in Katy By Jessa McClure Five children in white collared shirts and black shorts crowd around the chair of their teacher. As she begins the lesson, their voices quiet and they listen intently. Not only does she speak to them in English, but she also dictates the lesson in French and Spanish. Eagles on the Rock Academy, located right here in Katy, TX, is the only school of its kind in the state. It combines language immersion with Christian values and top-notch curriculum to give young children an educational experience they won’t get anywhere else. It all began with a vision from Pastor Jorge Cardenas of Church on the Rock Katy. “[The pastor] wanted to create a Christian school that would offer a very high-quality education in French and Spanish,” the school’s director, Dorothee Henderson, said. “For years it was just a dream, but then it started to become a reality.” A student of Henderson’s was a parishioner at Church on the
Rock. The child’s family introduced the teacher to the pastor and the academy began to take shape. Cardenas asked Henderson to come on board as the director, and soon they were planning the curriculum. “We’re following the curriculum basically of the French government,” she said. “It is a very demanding program. We are

adapting it in Spanish as well.” Henderson has seen firsthand how easily children adapt to language—both in her classroom at previous educational institutions and in her own home. “After a week of instruction, the kids, at every age level, understand the commands in each language and respond to those commands,” she said. “Even my own children can switch back and forth from speaking to their father in English and to me in French without being taught how to do that.” So, how does Henderson combine these two languages and still teach reading and arithmetic? “One day, the main subject will be in French and the next day it will be in Spanish,” Henderson said. “It’s extremely easy for kids to switch from one language to the next.” Right now the youngest students are three-year-olds and the oldest are in kindergarten. This will be the case for the 20162017 school year as well. But in August 2017, the school hopes to offer schooling for all elementary-aged children.
Henderson, a French native, said that being immersed in different languages can actually make children smarter. “When children are learning multiple languages, both hemispheres of the brain are working hard,” she said. “That makes children more aware of other people and more aware of different ways to think and to react. It’s helping to prepare them for life.” The school will also help children learn practical skills like gardening and farming along with their core classes. “We have many different specials during the day,” Henderson said. “We have gardening for every child, a science building, drama classes, music class, and P.E. We’re trying to each the whole child, inside and out.” Part of caring for the whole child is caring for their spiritual life as well. Because the school is a part of Church on the Rock, integrating a Christ-centered focus is important. “We want children to have a good basis for life,” she said. “We have devotionals every day, and focus on what’s most important. We want to guide the children in a healthy and safe way.” Parents who want to find out more information about the school and its values, should go to academyontherock.org. If you are interested in the classes offered at Eagles on the Rock Academy please call (281) 945-4540.

YMCA of Greater Houston Awards Local Man for His Commitment to Our Community HOUSTON – Each year the YMCA of Greater Houston recognizes the outstanding service of a volunteer who exemplifies the highest ideals of the Y and has made a significant contribution to the organization and its mission. We are pleased to announce that James Michael “Mike” Flory has been named this year’s David D. Allen Memorial Award recipient. Mike Flory is an example of how being devoted to helping others can make a big impact in the community. A board member for the Fort Bend Family YMCA for 16 years and an emeritus board member for the last five, Flory is actively involved in board activities. He has been instrumental in securing close to $1 million in donations and sponsorships during his tenure, allowing children and families to participate in Y programs regardless of their ability to pay. One of Flory’s greatest legacies is YMCA Camp Cloud, the YMCA’s first regional outreach summer camp program, which was established in 2012. As co-chair of the Camp Cloud Committee, he provided the leadership necessary to launch this program. During the summer, Camp Cloud serves approximately 500 low-income and at-risk youth from Outreach and Caring Community Centers, allowing them to canoe, fish and experience camp and nature, for the first time in many of their lives.
Flory’s charismatic personality, sincere passion and commitment have built and established a community of friendships. His involvement and dedication have helped the Y create and offer many free programs and services to our local community, including the Fort Bend Family YMCA Prayer Garden, Cookies with Santa (playing Santa himself for 10 years) and the Community Outreach after school and summer day camp programs at the Four Corners Community Center and Fresno/Arcola. Flory is a proud parent of six children and numerous grandchildren and resides in Fort Bend County with his wife, Linda. Flory works tirelessly and lives by the Y’s cause of strengthening the community through his leadership and commitment. It is through the work of volunteers such as that the YMCA is able to provide so many youth and families with the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive through participation in Y programs. For more information about volunteer opportunities at the YMCA, visit ymcahouston.org.

with my friends.” All of these responses are from REAL people with REAL stories, with REAL WHYs. The same question, “What does it mean to be fit?” has several different answers but all with the same concept, “To become the best version of ourselves.” Most of us want that concept but most people have no idea

where to start or they lack the support, motivation, accountability, and trust in order to even begin. “Life happens,” is a common reason of why people wait until they pay thousands of dollars a year in medications, the depression is at its lowest, self-confidence is non-existent, and they have lost themselves, when in fact, health and fitness should be a part of life. Fitness has been around since pre10,000 BC. The concept has been on repeat for quite some time, it has grown immensely from research to different theories, to gender specific, to sport and also been done differently throughout the world. Although, “Fitness” has been around for decades, there has also been a missing link between decades ago to life now. According to research, a staggering 28.0% of Americans, OR 80.2 million people, aged six and older are physically inactive. More than 80% of adults do not meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, and more than 80% of adolescents do not do enough aerobic physical activity to meet the guidelines for youth. On this journey of poor nutrition and lack of sustainable fitness, projections estimate that by 2018, obesity will cost the U.S. 21 percent of our total healthcare costs - $344 billion annually!! In addition, food-borne agents affect 1 out of 6 individuals and
cause approximately 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 deaths each year. Throughout history, as societies become too enamored with wealth, prosperity, and self-entertainment, fitness levels tend to decline. In addition, the more technology advances, the more fitness levels decrease. So, how do we start? First, ask yourself,” What is important to me?” “What is the reason I wake up every morning?” How committed am I to making a change not only for me but also for my loved ones? After the questions are answered, you take action. Iron Tribe Fitness Cinco Ranch is a faith based fitness community that has one purpose, to change as many lives as possible. We do this through personalized group training and proper nutrition. We truly are a tribe of athletes with one common bond, to become the healthiest version of ourselves. This is different for everyone but with the accountability from the coaches and athletes combined with intelligent sustainable programming, we achieve results, fun, and family. If you are interested in the training of Iron Tribe Fitness or would like to reach Jeremy or Clarissa Browning, please call them at (281) 303-5671. “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church.” – Ephesians 5: 29 “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” – 1 Corinthians 6:19

Sugar Land Pastor Follows God’s Calling to Start Family-Oriented Church By Jessa McClure When Pastor Terry Darnell was a sophomore at Texas State University in San Marcos, he felt the Lord’s calling to go into full-time ministry. After graduating with a degree in physical therapy, he moved to Lafayette, LA to become a youth pastor at the local Family Life Church. “Everything was going great, and the youth were growing in their faith walks,” Darnell said. “But after four years there I felt the Lord calling me to start my own church somewhere.” For several months, Darnell and his wife prayed and sought the Lord about the location of their next ministry venture. They weren’t sure of where they should go, but after visiting some friends in Sugar Land, started feeling as if the Lord was telling them to move to a city where they only knew two people.
“We moved here in June of 1999, and we’re about to celebrate our 17th year,” Darnell said. With just two parishioners, the pastor and his wife started

what would become Family Life Christian Fellowship. “We started going out into the community and meeting people,” he said. “I think our first official Sunday service had around 27 people, including children.” After meeting in their home for several months, they began to outgrow their facilities. “We rented a kids’ daycare from 1999 to 2006, which meant setting up and tearing down all of our sound equipment and everything else every Sunday for seven years,” Darnell said. In 2006 the church was able to purchase their own land where they built their first church building. When the first building was complete, the church had around 100 members. But over the next few years, FLCF quadrupled in membership, prompting the construction of a larger building. Now the church has around 425 members on a Sunday, with more community members visiting or joining on a regular basis. Darnell believes that the growth of the church is based on the welcoming environment he and other ministry leaders help create. “Everybody wants to be loved and accepted, and to feel that something is genuine,” Darnell said. “I think our church has that. When you walk through the door, you are greeted. And our services are geared specifically to be authentic. We want to teach people faith that works in their daily lives.”
FLCF is not only genuine in their approach to faith and church relations, but they also have a passion for including a variety of cultures and generations. Darnell wants everyone to
feel like they are a part of the family. Especially since his wife and children have been a part of the ministry from the beginning. “My wife works full-time here, overseeing our kids’ department,” he said. “And my kids have grown up in the church.

What If You Stay Home on Election Day? By Gary Gillen It looks like the November Presidential election will pit Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton. There are those who say they will never vote for Trump. Those folks have three choices. They could vote for Hillary. We will talk about what that means in a moment. Second, they could vote for a third party candidate if one exists by November. That is tantamount to voting for Hillary. Third, they could just stay home on Election Day. That will guarantee the election of Hillary. How bad would the election of Hillary be? We currently have a president whose economic policies have created the slowest recovery from a recession in history. Our current President, with the help of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Democrats in

Congress forced down our throats a health insurance program that is unaffordable, unconstitutional (according to a Federal Judge in a lawsuit brought by Congress against the Obama Administration) and has caused hiring to slow dramatically, prematurely pulled our troops out of Iraq allowing the takeover of much of that country by ISIS and requiring an increasing number of US ground troops, that he calls advisors, but are in combat situations to retake , used the IRS to target his enemies, gave defacto amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, has used Executive Orders to create and change settled law to his liking, has disregarded the Constitution and grovels at the feet of dictators while showing utter disrespect to our allies. He has allowed Korea to get away with firing missiles, Russia to invade our allies, an arms race to begin in the middle-east and China to flex its muscles in the China Sea. The list of failures is breathtaking. Hillary boasts that she will be a third Obama term. Oh, but it will be worse. She also wants to increase taxes even higher. She wants us to provide “free college” to everyone. She believes that government is always right and one size fits all, so she will increase the minimum wage by Executive Order across the nation regardless of the local cost of living. She will continue the Obama plan for more control over our lives by big government with the EPA, the IRS, the Energy Department and the Department of Education. A President Hillary Clinton will expand welfare, continue the out of control spending we currently have, destroy the oil industry as she and Obama have the coal industry and take away our Second Amendment rights. She will divide us and find ever more
“victims” to which she will grant special rights. Many of Obama’s most destructive actions have been by executive order. The next President will either repeal those orders or renew them. The next President will make key appointments to agencies across government and in the military. Is there any doubt that a President Hillary will double down on the Executive Orders and appoint more liberals, socialists, and the “victim” class to the Justice Department, the EPA, The Education Department, the IRS and every other department in government? Probably the most important reason that a President Hillary would be a disaster for our nation is the fact that the next President will appoint a replacement for the late Antonin Scalia to the Supreme Court and possibly three others. All of the unconstitutional actions of President Obama are working their way through the court system and ultimately be decided by a Supreme Court balanced by half liberal and half relatively conservative justices. There is no doubt a President Hillary would make an appointment that would tilt the court left for a generation. The damage to our nation by that one appointment alone brings me to this conclusion: If you love America, you must vote for the Republican candidate, even if it is Trump! Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control and Gillen Political Strategies in Richmond. He is the only person in history to have served on both the Richmond City Commission and the Rosenberg City Council. He was the Chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County 2006-2007. Don’t Let Your Kids Trade Their Wings for Worms By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein I heard a tale the other day that is especially applicable to today’s teenagers. Indulge me a moment, for it’s worth hearing: There once lived a bird and a fox. Naturally, the bird stayed up in her tree to avoid the fox’s fangs. One day, the fox made an offer to the bird. “Just give me one feather and when you wake up in the morning, a worm will be waiting for you.” The bird didn’t see the harm, so she went along with the deal. Sure enough, the next morning, a juicy worm was laid out for her dining pleasure. The fox said, “I’ll continue to provide you a delicious worm for a feather,” and the bird didn’t see the harm, so each day she exchanged a feather for a worm. Until one day when she descended the tree, enjoyed her meal, and faced the fox’s fangs. To her dismay, she found that she was unable to fly away, as she had given away all her feathers, and the fox proceeded to enjoy his own delicious meal. Our teenagers face similar offers and temptations on a daily
basis. I’ll just give in on this one little thing - no harm done - and I’ll be able to get this one big thing in return. I see it all the time, whether in academics or in their social world - they sacrifice a bit of themselves, their integrity, their honesty, their belief systems, their parental guidance – to get something that seems to come so easily, something they’d be insane to pass up.

They cheat, because studying and plodding through a multistep process is difficult and tedious. They lie, because telling the truth would be difficult or even painful. They do drugs, because being accepted in that moment is way easier than standing individually apart from the crowd. They have indiscriminate sex, because that momentary indulgence is more satisfying - and socially acceptable - than holding out until it’s right. And yes, they hurt
themselves in big and small ways because they’re thinking only of the short-term, not the long-term implications. As parents, one of your primary responsibilities is to teach your kids not to give up their feathers for worms. Your kids should always know their bottom line. They should know where their family stands on the various issues and life circumstances they will encounter. It should be a regular topic of discussion in your home, and they should feel comfortable coming to you with questions and struggles they are facing. Their Christian beliefs will certainly strengthen their resolve but won’t stop them from facing temptations and having to make difficult decisions they’re not quite equipped to make at this age. Your teens need to know that they have the power of their parents behind their morals, ethics, and beliefs. When they can’t summon the strength to stand up for what is right, they should be able to go to you for a recharge. You are not their cool friend

your kids will too. If you refuse to sacrifice yourself to societal pressures, your kids will be inclined to follow your lead. If you teach work ethic and the value of perseverance, your kids will also experience the thrill of truly earning something worthwhile. Your role model status cannot be overstated here – parents are the two biggest influencers in their kids’ lives, and you must not only tell them but show them that doing what’s right in the long term is so much more satisfying than taking the easy way out. Teach your kids that despite what society says, working hard to make your own way and letting go of the desire for instant gratification will give them the feathers to fly.
who tells them to do whatever they think is best and you’ll support them one way or the other. You are their parents, their role models, their touchstones. You’re supposed to teach them right from wrong, even if they balk... especially if they balk because that’s when they need you the most. Yes, it’s exhausting to parent well, and you will make countless mistakes before your kids ever reach the age of adulthood. But if you remain true to your convictions, it’s much more likely

James E. Taylor High School Student Organizations Host Color for a Cause 5k Fun Run and Raise $10,000 for The Arc of Katy Katy, Texas – The air was cool and crisp, and the morning was still dark at 5:30 a.m. on a Saturday when students from James E. Taylor High School’s National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America met in the school’s parking lot. They were there to set up the track, that later that morning, would be filled with runners registered for the school’s second annual Color for a Cause 5K Fun Run. Color stations were put in place, vendors would soon be there to set up their areas, registration tables were set up, and volunteers were given instructions and then sent to staff their posts all along the track. Walkers and runners donated money to participate in the fun event with proceeds going to The Arc of Katy, a nonprofit organization that provides programs for teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). When the race started at 8:00 a.m., a burst of colors flew into the air as several hundred runners and walkers took off to conquer the 5k distance. As they progressed through the 5k loop, they passed through several color stations where they were met by volunteers ready to douse them with bright colors of non-tox-
ic corn starch which brightened up their white Color for a Cause t-shirts. According to Carolyn Kares, Chairperson of the Program Committee for The Arc of Katy, “Fun was had by all, and The Arc of Katy was awarded a $10,000 check from funds raised through the event. The Arc of Katy thanks these high school students, their teachers, and the participants of the fun run for giving their time and financial contribution in this great cause.” Kares said The Arc of Katy will use the funds to support its summer day camp for adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
