Our Mission Statement:

“Our mission is to have a magazine devoted to His glory, provide cutting-edge stories important to today’s Christian, promote Christian-Judeo values we find important, and editorial content that your entire family can enjoy.” President/Publisher Joseph Menslage joseph@katychristianmagazine.com

Back-to-school blessings to you all! What an exciting time of year it is as we usher out summer and phase into fall. You’ll find this issue filled with ideas for your students, from extracurricular activities to Bible trivia to school project ideas. Be sure and check out our Christian business advertisers, who offer backto-school medical and dental care, clothing and school choice options for every age. Did you know the “C” in YMCA stands for Christian? Check out the article on our local YMCA, which offers an array of programs geared toward the Christian community. What a joy it is to feature Danielle Bradbery, The Voice winner with roots in Cypress. This 16-year-old has experienced a whirlwind of acclaim and returned home to a celebration at the Community of Faith Church. Dan Patrick and the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of commerce honored her, as did local fans. Enjoy the article! We also had fun interviewing Damon Rexroad of FORE!, a golf comedy series that brings to mind “Seinfeld on a golf course!” It’s our first interview with a minister who is also a professional actor. This issue also brings you pastor, student and business profiles, along with an interview with the wonderful Dr. Lin, who has been honored as Physician of the Year in 2013 by Memorial Hermann Katy. She is truly a Christian practitioner. We are also excited to welcome Melanie Saxton as our editor. Melanie has written for our magazine for years, and you’ve likely seen her work in many local publications. She is also a book editor and certified English teacher, and is at the helm locating interesting community stories, including Christian entertainment, artists and authors. Do you have a compelling story to share? If so, contact her at melanie@katychristianmagazine.com for consideration. One note: We failed to credit the wonderful Debi Beauregard for her photography of American Idol winner Scotty McCreery in our recent issue. Thank you, Debi, and forgive us for the oversight. Well, it’s on to another school year. We wish the best to all our students as they endeavor to learn and grow. Please pray that our children remain a light in the darkness and are bold ambassadors for Christ. It’s not easy in this day and age, and we hope our magazine in some small way encourages them and their families along their journey. May You Be Richly Blessed, Joseph R. Menslage

Back to School: All Work and No Play? No Way! By Brenda Carmichael The kids are heading back to the classroom to face an avalanche of homework and projects. Schedules are busy, but this doesn’t mean there isn’t room for fun! Physical activity helps stretch muscles and clears the brain. It also helps kids de-stress and enjoy childhoods that fly away too quickly. We hope the following suggestions help your children transition from summer to school, and keep fit and healthy in the process. Give ‘em a try! There’s something for everyone! JUMP-N-JOY BOUNCE HOUSE RENTALS Bounce houses aren’t just for birthday parties. They can help ring in the school year and celebrate the start of a brand new semester. Pastor Profile: Dr. Tom Barnette By Melanie Saxton At 15, Dr. Tom Barnette led his very first soul to Christ — his father. In 8th grade he announced his newfound faith and was mocked with Marine Corps efficiency as his father tried to reduce his beliefs to rubble. He would say things like, “Tom, we need to get you a big tent and a bunch of one-armed deacons, so when you preach they can’t steal from the offering bucket.” Alcohol and cigarettes had drastically affected his father’s health, and by 9th grade Barnette visited him in the hospital. Instead of an atmosphere of prayer and hope, it was a countdown to hell. Those who knew his father best were convinced he would or could never change, even if he survived. “If death ever had an optimistic crowd, it was my family,” says Barnette. The state of his father’s eternal soul may not have interested relatives, but it certainly grieved Barnette. Satan had control of his father throughout all those years of alcohol and anger, but his life was taken back that night in the hospital. “My father had been asking for me by name, and I went into the ICU room alone as a one-year-old Christian. No longer ferocious and angry, Dad was now shriveled, weak, and dying,” says Barnette. Words cannot adequately describe the feelings and events that followed as he shared the eternal consequences of his father’s choices. Propelled by a supernatural bold-

ness from the Holy Spirit, Barnette held out both hands and said, “I only have one simple question. In this hand I have heaven and in this hand I have hell. Where do you wish to go when you die?” His father chose heaven. “The devil lost!” says Barnette. “Dad lived two more years, often spent in the hospital, and never touched another drop of booze.” He attended regular Bible studies with men from the Gideon Bible Society in the Veterans Hospital, and before passing away said, “I wish I had known Jesus all my life.” Barnette was called to ministry early and “argued all the way,” but became ordained in 1980 by Dr. John Bisagno of First Baptist. Since then, he has had the privilege of sharing the Gospel and leading thousands of people to Christ. “As a counselor, each time I can help an alcoholic recover or a family heal or a teenager get off drugs, I reclaim a small part of my dad’s life,” he says. He counts among his greatest blessings a supportive wife, Dana, and his children Tommie Alice, Jonathan Claton, and LeeAnn Marie. After preaching 28 years he founded the Family Life Success Ministry. Most recently he is President of the Barnham Graduate School and Seminary, which meets at the Faith West campus at 2525 Porter Road in Katy (wwwbarnhamgss.org). Barnette is also a trainer for grant writer professionals and author of the anthology Ethics Professional, Rule of 52, Christ Centered Reality Therapy, Single Advance Workbook, Unanticipated Chicken, and Ethical Mediation.

eloma and two additional surgeries related to the endocrine tumor. He has faced a stem cell transplant this summer, which involved a four-week hospital stay. In addition, Robert’s position that he had held for 20 years with a local homebuilder was eliminated due to the economic downturn.

Recently on their 21st wedding anniversary Robert and Kristin repeated their vows, “For better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.” Indeed, the couple has endured more than most. Throughout this past year, their 10, 14 and 17-year old boys (Cooper, Keller and Cade) have turned one year older, playing sports and relying on their faith. They love their dad very much and have witnessed his journey through hospitalizations, surgeries and most recently a transplant. More importantly, they have experienced their parents’ unwavering belief, optimism and courage.

“We wouldn’t want to walk this road without the closeness we feel from the Lord,” says Kristin, his wife. “We know He is good and He loves us and He is all capable. We know He is with us, giving us strength to face each day and each part of our days. We wish none of us had to go through this, but believe that not one thing comes to us that has not already passed by the LORD. He is not surprised by this and is very near.” The Cox family are seeing God in many sweet and profound ways. It is their deep belief that He is using all of this for His glory and that through this He is drawing them close to Himself. “Thank you Lord for being with Cooper, Keller and Cade each day and night since last summer when they first learned of all this,” says Kristin, who also thanks the community for their support. Read the Communist Agenda By Bill Kneer Most of the country (as a whole) used to stand for something, specifically moral values and Biblical behavior. By today’s standards this may not be “cool” or “hip,” and some might call us “dinosaurs” or even “haters” for our conservative Christian beliefs. In fact, many point to Republican Party and say the same thing. But there is more to the Republican Party than meets the eye. Did you know our platform was developed to counter the Communist Agenda? Yes, there really is a Community Agenda (it’s been public knowledge for years) —and it’s not the “boogie man” or something to wave away. It is a sincere and diabolical effort to undermine and obliterate the America we all know and love—an America filled with decency and dreams and unlimited opportunity. The ominous truth is, we are currently dog paddling through a tsunami of Communist indoctrination. The residue is sticking like mud to our youth and diminishing the glory of our formerly robust nation. If you have any doubts regarding the dangers we face, I point you to http://rense.com/general32/americ.htm and excerpt a few of the Communist initiatives below: 15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States. 24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press. 25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting por-

nography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV. 26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.” 27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.” 28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.” Sound familiar? You bet. Communism is all around us, despite the gruesome history lessons and bloody murder of people who had no vote, no voice, no chance at freedom. The atrocities of Stalin, Lenin and Mussolini are so quickly forgotten. The Left and the Libertarian Right are useful idiots who have been easily duped—or guilted—into compliance. This is demonstrated in a quote from Stalin: “America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within.” Now America has become socially engineered into a leftist propaganda machine. So many, for lack of knowledge or a backbone, have accommodated this hijacking of our values. Their reward is to be progressive and “cool” and “hip” (whoopee!), all the while being Communist sympathizers facing a cruel fate without really even knowing it. The dire reality is that they are pulling the rest of us

For the last 50 years at Tradition Bank, we’ve known that community service and support for local businesses and organizations matter. We’re proud to work in a community where so many others do too.

down in the process. People often ask me why I am a Republican. I support the Republican Party because of the platform—America’s best “last chance” to stand firm and fight back. There is a need for an unshakable moral compass, especially in a political arena filled with erring human beings... and especially in a day and age when “anything goes.” Our local, state and national Republican platforms reflect fundamental principles written on behalf of “principled people.” Visit www.harriscountygop.com. Just click “Our Party” and scroll down to “Platform.” No other party is railing against the Communist Agenda. In fact, many are blind and may not even realize that they support the Communist Agenda with every left-leaning vote. I am proud of many local precinct chairs and other prominent Republicans who battle tooth and nail to halt this insidious blind slide toward a dangerous—if not inevitable—precipice. After all, the very head of our government embraces Communist talking points and initiatives. It is taught in our schools. It is heralded in the media. It enjoys the whole-hearted embrace of Hollywood. Only the Republican platform rejects the following libertarian, democrat and socialist agendas: 1. Pro-Choice 2. Pro-Drugs 3. Anti-Biblical Marriage 4. Pro-Homosexual Agenda 5. Anti-American Defense (these would be the left-wing hippies) 6. Anti-Border Security 7. Anti-God (meaning all references to God and religion should be left at the doors of our churches)

What does all of this tell us? The answer isn’t “cool” or “hip.” The

truth is, we should not waffle on social issues. Republicans leave that to others who embrace “feel good” progressive visions and opt for the slippery slope. Instead, Republicans would rather be staunchly conservative—perhaps a minority in a country leaning left. But nevertheless, we still have the right to practice our faith and politics, despite the chorus of social reformers and anti-Christians who call us names. Yes, politics and religion are certainly and irrevocably intertwined, and suddenly it’s not a “conspiracy theory” any more. I believe that the filth we are subjected to has ties to the Anti-Christ and Lucifer himself—pushing, pushing, pushing for a purge of Christian ethics in a Godly nation. The Book of Revelations suddenly makes sense, doesn’t it? We see more clearly now than ever the cunning work of the enemy, marching toward a One World Government and One World Religion. But you won’t hear about this in the mainstream media. The goal is to keep the masses ignorant. We cannot continue to allow people to redefine who and what we. One way to push back is to simply live and vocalize our beliefs, regardless of raised eyebrows, the mocking of liberals, or threat of surveillance by the NSA and the PRISM program. We are Biblical Christians, not animals or mindless robots, and we live by a platform that supports Biblical values best reflected in the Republican Party. I do not want to be a person run amuck in a world of moral relativism, which is simply “code” for absence of values. And so I speak out and stand up. How about you? Local Christian Student Highlights Gordon Rosel

Chelsea Alcala

Classification: Senior Faith West Academy

Classification: Junior Faith West Academy

Gordon Rosel, 18, of Katy, has earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts. Rosel was recognized in ceremonies on Sunday, April 29 at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Katy. He earned the rank of Eagle on February 27, 2013. A member of Troop 209, chartered by St. Peter’s Methodist Church, Rosel is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a service project that benefits a non-profit organization or the community. To earn his Eagle, Rosel develop a Land Navigation Course in George Bush Park that benefits the National Guard Armory, the Boy Scouts, and the general public. Rosel began scouting in kindergarten in Cub Scout Pack 443. As a Cub he earned ranks of Tiger, Wolf, and Webelos. When asked what was the most difficult badge to earn he stated; “It was the rock climbing because I didn’t know how to tie all those knots.” His favorite activity was camping (with over 100 nights of overnight camping to his credit) and admits his favorite camping staple is Pop-Tarts. Gordon received the Triple Crown last summer by completing all three national high-adventure bases operated by the Boy Scouts of American. Rosel has been a member of the swim and football teams as well as the FFA at Faith West Academy, where he is a senior. In the fall Rosel plans to attend Sam Houston University to major in Criminal Justice. He was inspired by Scoutmaster Drew Young, a scoutmaster of Troop 209, who in on Houston’s bomb squad. Rosel wants to one day be on the SWAT, because “I see a need for justice and this where I am suppose to go,” he said.

“I used to want to become a doctor, but now it’s making a difference in someone’s life,” Chelsea said about her future ambition. “Honestly, I don’t know what that looks like, but I have been humbled by volunteer work.” Within the last year Chelsea has logged more than 110 volunteer hours at St. Justin Martyr Social Ministries and 65 hours at West Houston Medical Center with the sole purpose of helping to make a difference. Her plans are to continue this volunteerism during spring and summer breaks. As president of the International Club she has spear headed that group to take on a global initiative to supply clean water to people throughout the world via organizations such as Global H20. For $20, these organizations provide one person clean water for life-thus making a difference. What are you passionate about? Chelsea recently won 1st Place in Social Studies at the TAPPS District meet. She is also a second year tennis player. After starting as a beginner last year, this year feels like a reward knowing the game and being able to compete with players that have had much more experience. Chelsea is also a member of PAL (Peer Assistant and Leadership where she mentors four elementary school age children) and attends St. Justin Martyr.

Natural Methods for Strengthening Your Immune System By Dr. Steven Hotze In the midst of back-to-school preparations, it is easy to forget about taking care of a very important blessing: your health. No one wants to feel under the weather or have low energy, especially during the summer. Your best defense is to build a healthy immune system, naturally. For example, did you know that your thyroid gland controls your metabolism and keeps your body running at optimum levels? If your thyroid levels are low or if your cells are not utilizing your thyroid hormones properly, then you could suffer from a wide range of symptoms, including:

sleep, repairing and regenerating your cells. Healthy cells are important for a healthy immune system. Did you know that your muscles and cardiovascular system are not the only parts of your body that benefit from regular exercise? It also strengthens your immune system by improving your immune response. Take your vitamins: Probiotics are “good bacteria” that line the intestinal tract and have been shown to support gut health. Scientific research has found that 80 percent of the immune system is in the GI tract. One study of 3,451 study participants showed that a daily dose of probiotics reduced the number of people who had at least one cold by 42 percent. Vitamin C helps fight infections and is critical for healthy adrenal glands. Zinc optimizes the immune system and has direct antiviral effects. Garlic fights germs responsible for causing the common cold, flu, sore throat, sinusitis and bronchitis. Maintain high levels of vitamin D

by supplementing with vitamin D3 and through natural sunlight exposure. Ask your physician to check your vitamin D levels to ensure they are up to par. These simple but important choices will help boost your immune system and keep the cold and flu at bay. My wish for you is to be healthy --- all year long! Damon Rexroad and FORE! By Brenda Carmichael What’s a guy from Friendswood doing in Katy, Texas? That’s the question we asked actor Damon Rexroad. He’s been cast as one of the lead characters in the sitcom FORE!, a golf web comedy series that has been dubbed “Seinfeld on a golf course.” This Katy-based venture is quickly gaining national attention. Rexroad stars in each episode and brings laughs to the audience with foibles on and off the course. We have never before featured a minister who is also a professional actor, but Rexroad fits the bill. He started acting at the age of 12 in community theatre, but most of his young life Caption: (L-R): FORE! cast members Erin Reed as “Liz,” Cory Hart as “Cee,” Scott Pitney as “Scott,”, was spent juggling acting gigs and sports. ish Christian radio station,” he says. Their long distance courtship included a lot of emails, and he went back to meet her family. They were married in 2004. The couple permanently relocated back to the states and first settled in Tulsa so Rexroad could finish Bible School, then moved to Houston. He started an oilfield business and later joined a friend in the same industry. He and Isabel have been blessed with two small sons, Nico and Caleb. The acting bug never diminished, and Rexroad has appeared in numerous award winning short films, TV commercials, web shorts, and even co-hosted the prestigious 2009 Houston Advertising Awards (ADDYS). Most recently he won honors for the short Film, “Chance 27”, which he both directed and co-wrote. He also co-hosted Breaking Right, the hit podcast turned weekly radio show that aired on the former CNN 650 in Houston. His work on Team Xtreme combined Nickelodeon-style entertainment and excitement of martial arts, and this background certainly prepared him for his comedic role on FORE! “I’ve had to turn down roles that clashed with my beliefs,” he says, but signed on to FORE!, a comedy for grown ups best described with the tag line: “Golf has never been this funny!” He’s been happily portraying a hapless and often frustrated golfer since the venture launched last year. Viewers may find themselves giggling over his “Son of a monkey!” outbursts on film, which are a shout out to his favorite actor, Chris Farley. He notes that if you like comedy, golf—or both (and appreciate a Seinfield kind of humor), you’ll like FORE! The cast includes national talent, including CBS and the Golf Channel’s Billy Ray Brown and former golf pro Tom Byrum. Doug Pike from Houston SportsTalk 790 also stars. You’ll also see Erin Reed, Cory Hart, Wer-

Hodgson CPA

ner Richmond, Brian Treybig and Evan King spinning their comedic antics in each episode. The web comedy golf sitcom chronicles the adventures and social blunders of a group of golfers, all members of the affordable Fork Willow Country Club, and all social outcasts to everyone at the club but themselves. The characters are the polar opposite of country club snobs with antics that are anything but politically and socially correct.

FORE’s creator and Executive Producer Scott Pitney is an avid golfer, Katyite and member of the private club on which the show is based. This provides a colorful and accurate backdrop for each of episode. Fans can check out the hijinks and enjoy the commercial aired on Fox News and The Weather Channel. Visit www.facebook. com/watchfore and check out www.watchfore.com as Rexroad and the cast perform on the golf course!

Christian Business Profile: Dr. Selina Lin of Katy Women’s Health By Brenda Carmichael Dr. Selina Lin serves as the Obstetric Chairperson for Memorial Hermann Hospital Katy. In addition to winning many patients choice awards, she has been named Physician of the Year for 2012 by Memorial Hermann Katy. She is also chairman of the Board of Interserve USA and very involved in missions. We applaud her for her work at home and abroad. Dr. Lin is such a unique individual and truly an embodiment of a Christian practitioner, as you’ll see! “We lovingly call her the Energizer Bunny, because she never stops,” says Crystal Smith, Practice Administrator at Katy Women’s Health. Dr. Lin owns and is very involved in her practice, arriving at the office at the crack of dawn every morning and staying after dark. In addition, she chairs the OB committee at the hospital, chairs the International Missions Committee, and has hosted Bible studies at her house for teens. Up Close and Personal “Dr. Lin is truly a ‘Paul’ from the Bible,” says Smith. “Paul charged people to stay single if they could without sinning to devote

their extra time to God, and that is exactly what Dr. Lin has done. She has never married or had children, but has devoted her life to the service of God.” Her extended family includes nieces and nephews. Her niece Elizabeth calls her at the end of every day, and Dr. Lin helps her with practice piano every night after work. Her older nephews also adore her. She had taken segments of time off in her career to tutor them for big tests like the SAT, or escort them to music camp in New York. They are, as a family, currently working on an international student outreach in South Texas. Dr. Lin attends Creekside Community Church in Katy, where she is a beloved member and mentor to some of the youth. On alternating Sundays she can be found teaching rambunctious preschoolers while their parents worship. She also loves music and is an avid violin player. “She is kind, generous and selfless,” adds Smith, who notes that Dr. Lin prays over her staff, patients and extended family every day. “When things get crazy in the office, she steps in and says, ‘Let’s pray!’ She lives her relationship with God out loud to the world.” Interserve USA This and a busy practice would seem to be enough for one physician to handle, but Dr. Lin has always been interested in using her profession for Christ. Mission work is near and dear to her heart, and Interserve USA is one way she and other professionals help build God’s kingdom through cross-cultural missions. Founded in 1852, Interserve is one of the oldest international, interdenominational overseas agencies in existence. The organization

first cared for the poor and marginalized in Southeast Asia so that they could encounter Jesus and experience the life that He wanted for them. “The vision God gave to our founders is still alive,” says Dr. Lin. The organization now serves people in the Arab world, Bangladesh, Cypress, Pakistan, Nepal, Mongolia and throughout Asia. “Jesus shapes the way we see our world and the way we see our place in the world,” she adds. Katy Women’s Care Dr. Lin graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch—Galveston, and completed her residency at the University of Alabama—Birmingham. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association. She is committed to providing convenient access to high-quality medical care—not just the healthcare she dispenses, but also the relationships she builds with her patients. She and fellow physician Joy Young Kim, MD strive to be leaders in innovative medical practices at Katy Women’s Care, P.A. (formerly Obstetric and Gynecologic Affiliates of Katy founded in 1991). Katy Women’s Care offer minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, and a full suite of gynecological and obstetrics health services. (www.katywomens.com). America Loves Danielle Bradbury! By Christina Dodson Who hasn’t heard of The Voice winner Danielle Bradbery? This young lady is local to our area and suddenly found herself at the NBC Studios in Los Angeles competing against the best and brightest vocal talent in the nation. Surprise Audition If it weren’t for her mother, Danielle would not have attended the blind auditions. Mom submitted Danielle as a hopeful contestant, which surprised the 16-year-old Cy Ranch High sophomore. Fortune smiled upon Danielle as Usher, Caption: The Voice winner Danielle Bradbery poses with Blake Shelton and Katy student Nadia Chervnsik, an Exley Elementary Adam Levine turned third grader. Photography by Holly Chervnsik. in their chairs at her rendition of “Mean.” She made it through the first round, became a part of Team Blake, and impressed an audience of fans. Exciting Episodes Week by week Danielle edged closer to a recording contract and a $100,000 prize. She sang a wide range of selections, including “Put Your Records On,” “Jesus Take the Wheel,” “Maybe it was Memphis,” “Wasted,” “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” “Grandpa,” “Shake the Sugar Tree,” “A Little Bit Stronger,” “Please Remember Me,” and “Who I Am.” Each title spurred her onward as fellow contestants were voted off.

The Top Three! Only Danielle, Michelle Chamuel and The Swon Brothers remained as America waited for the Season 4 winner to be announced. All three were treated to a car, courtesy of Kia—which surprised them! Danielle, as the youngest winner in the history of the show, “was speechless” as her name was announced. The victory happened to fall on June 18th, which was Blake Shelton’s 37th birthday. What a gift that must have been as it catapulted him into new acclaim as the “winningest” coach who had groomed three out of four season winners. Celebrations Danielle’s newfound celebrity changed everything. Her “new normal” included a whirlwind appearance on the Today Show and a visit to her new record label, Big Machine, which also represents Taylor Swift. Several of her renditions performed on The Voice reached the Top 10 chart on iTunes. As soon as she could, Danielle returned home to catch up with family and friends. A homecoming celebration at Community of Faith in Cypress, a church her family attends, was held on June 29th. Danielle performed to a live audience and sang “Jesus Take the Wheel.” Senator Dan Patrick gave her a plaque from the state capitol. The CyFair Houston Chamber of Commerce congratulated her with a “Key to the Community”—a beautiful key-shaped necklace commemorating her win. What’s Next? “I’m still processing it all,” says Danielle, who appreciates her fans and supporters. She will continue her education as a junior at an online high school, freeing her to gain an education while attending to her new obligations. She’s working on new music and is adjusting to stardom. With her parents, stepparents and large supportive family at her side, she’ll navigate Nashville while retaining her sweet demeanor and Christian values. We wish Danielle the very best and hope to hear her new music soon!

The “C” in YMCA By Ganesh Venkataramanan To most people, the YMCA is a great place to work out and swim. But it is my task to remind people that the “C” stands for Christian. I head up the Christian Emphasis Committee for the Katy YMCA. Our goal is give back in a measurable way to the Katy YMCA membership and the Katy community—beyond providing a gym and swimming pool. We offer programs in different subjects and areas designed to help others. About two years ago the first Dave Ramsey “Financial Peace” class was featured, and now there is also a Dave Ramsey class for teens. If we can teach our teens to take care of their finances when they are young, it’s better than having to fix problems later in life. Honestly, at the beginning of this week-long class there isn’t a single teen who wants to be there. But by the end of the week they are asking how to go about getting their own check book.” Marriage Matters, a couple’s class, is about strengthening marriages. A mother-daughter class is available to help moms and daughters strengthen their relationship. In the next few years, more than half the people who are working will be women. Therefore we plan to offer a class for Women in Leadership.” There is also technology for parents. Some of you may relate to the fact that my own daughter started using YouTube when she was three years old! Children are IT savvy, and parents need tools to keep up. It may surprise the community to learn that we offer a Christian Defensive Driving Class every two months. But as word spreads, it has become one of our most popular classes. And we are always looking for new classes that can help people. Presently we are considering a class to help prepare high school juniors and seniors for college. We are looking at a Dave Ramsey course in Spanish that will probably meet at one of the Katy schools in the evenings or weekends. Membership in the YMCA is not required and classes are free, but there may be a cost for the materials. Childcare is available while parents take the class. I am personally involved in the Katy YMCA because I think we all realize at some point that it’s not all about “me,” and that there is something beyond. It starts with the families and extends into the community. I would rather help someone one time that helps them the rest of their life. Join us at the Katy YMCA! We are located at 22807 Westheimer Parkway. The phone number is 281-302-5055. Visit www. ymcahouston.org/katy for available programs. 48 • For Advertising Information, Call (281) 600-0077 • www.KatyChristianMagazine.com

“But i don’t FEEL normal!” Carol’s Story I always thought I had a thyroid problem. Ever since the first set of symptoms started revealing themselves, which began right after the birth of our third child, I knew something was off. Exhaustion began to slowly creep up on me until it finally consumed me. It was draining. I have never experienced anything quite like it. No matter how many naps I took or how long I slept, it was still there. At first I blamed the fact that I was raising three children and holding down a full time job…who wouldn’t be exhausted? Then the next phase of symptoms began to roll in. I was cold all the time! It would be August in Texas and I’d be wearing a jacket to work. My hair and eyebrows began to thin out. Oh, and the brain fog. I honestly thought my memory loss was the first sign that I had Alzheimer’s. Over coffee with a friend, something I was consuming way too much of, I discussed with her what was happening to me. She said that it sounded like a thyroid issue, something I had always thought. Naturally, I went to my doctor, explained my symptoms and told him that I thought I was hypothyroid. He ran some tests, took blood work and scheduled my recheck. Two weeks later he told me that my blood work was normal. “But I don’t feel normal,” I told him. “Are you sure those results are right?” His answer was “yes,” and he offered me a prescription for an antidepressant. I told him, “No way!” While online, I stumbled upon the Hotze Health & Wellness Center website. It felt like it was written for me. I discovered that they used an innovative approach in diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. I scheduled my appointment and was blown away by their professionalism. They explained to me that my symptoms were very common in women in my age group. They discovered that I had an imbalance in my female hormones that adversely affected my body’s ability to use thyroid hormones. I was prescribed bio-identical progesterone, estrogen and natural thyroid medication.

Within two months, my life was transformed. My energy was back. I can keep up with my kids, husband and job. My fading memory returned to normal and I was finally able to sleep soundly again. I got my life back! If this sounds like something you or someone you love has been experiencing, it’s not “all in your head” and you don’t have to just deal with it as a part of getting older.

SignS & SymptomS of HypotHyroidiSm • Low energy/ fatigue • Decreased libido • Difficulty losing weight • Headaches • Brain fog • Joint and muscle pain • Difficulty concentrating • Hair loss/thinning hair • Constipation

An Unusual Back-to-School Story: How Katy Christian Magazine Came to Be By Melanie Saxton This year, “back-to-school” has a bittersweet meaning for Joe Menslage. As the busy publisher of Katy Christian Magazine, he is also the widowed father of four children—two daughters and two sons. This year his firstborn is heading to college, a milestone event that has Joe shaking his head in amazement. Like any parent of a college-bound teen, his role has changed from parent to mentor. It takes some getting used to. Although his eldest has spread his wings, Joe’s 12-, 14- and 16-year-olds are still under the roof. Preparing for a new school year without his departed wife Nicole is never easy, but his children are older now and able to help. They often handle their own back-toschool shopping for school supplies and clothes. It’s taken nearly five years to adjust, but with the Lord’s help the family has overcome an earth-shaking event and managed to move forward. Joe has a compelling testimony dating back to when he first met Nicole. He’ll be the first to say he’s traveled some peaks and valleys before giving his life fully to Christ. His story is relatable and mirrored by so many Christians who were once lost, and then found.

“The ‘80s were filled with some crazy years of partying and carousing. I was hopelessly roped into the world… or so I thought,” says Joe. God had other plans. As is often the case with Christian spouses, Nicole’s influence turned his life around. Soon Joe fully committed to Christ and it totally changed his perspective. His long publishing career in the sports magazine realm lost its luster. He began dreaming of other publishing opportunities “geared for the Kingdom” and wondered if a Christian audience would be receptive. Surely a community of believers would embrace a wholesome Christian magazine? With the seed planted, he followed his true calling and launched Houston Christian Magazine, a premier publication in Harris County. Joe and his family attend Second Baptist Katy, which has served the community since 1999. The vibe of the Katy area appealed to him. After all, Katy was dubbed “the city of churches” many years ago. As he learned more about the people and historic background, he realized Katy was the perfect location for a Christian publication, especially because it spans three counties. Katy Christian Magazine was born and has steadily attracted advertiser and readers over the years. When Nicole was tragically killed in a car accident, it turned the Menslage family upside down. “It was a complete shock and something we could never have imagined. I’m not sure how we survived that terrible time,” says Joe. He had to hold himself together—and more importantly, hold his young children together. On top of that he had a magazine to publish. It wasn’t easy. “If not for God’s grace,

everything would have unraveled,” he adds. He is grateful that his children have sprouted into young people of Christ, and that Katy Christian Magazine is a vibrant presence in the community. He loves reader feedback, which greatly affects the articles he publishes. Student profiles and pastor profiles are popular, as are features on Christians in the workplace. He’s also added an “arts” component and enjoys interviews with local authors, singers and those who undertake mission trips. “With every Christian comes a story,” he says, and is honored to be able to share glimpses into those journeys. So with another school year underway, Joe continues with his own mission, which is to offer “family friendly news with an eternal purpose.” He encourages us all to support local Christian businesses, which are the foundation of Katy. “Check out our Christian advertisers,” he invites. These good people offer products and services you can count on, especially with a new school year ahead.

Love Golf? We Have a Tournament for You! Mark your calendars for September 30th! The Chris Saiz Point the Way Foundation is hosting their second annual golf tournament for a wonderful cause. At stake are scholarships for graduating high school seniors seeking a college education, but lack the financial resources to achieve their goals. The Chris Saiz Point The Way Foundation Golf Tournament Inspired by the exceptional life and accomplishments of Katy’s Chris Saiz, the charity golf tournament rewards our area’s deserving youth and commemorates a young man who came close to realizing his own. The foundation was established two years ago in honor of Chris, a Cinco Ranch High athlete who tragically passed away in 2011 in a car accident. This year the foundation awarded eight scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $3,500 for a total of $20,000, and the goal is to do the same (or better) in 2014. Join in the Fun! Golfers, sponsors and friends are invited to the River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy on Monday, September 30, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Last year’s tournament was a lot of fun, and this fall will undoubtedly delight golfers.

Teens and Dating: “The Purity Code” By Melane Saxton Many of us are parents of ‘tweens and teens, which means dating is a hot topic of interest. It’s not always easy or comfortable tackling the deep subjects, and parents (and kids) often feel awkward and embarrassed by frank discussions about temptations and curiosity. Yet our children are exposed to social influences and the risqué behavior of peers… meaning the time to counteract negative influences is NOW. But how best to accomplish this? I was inspired by author Jim Burns’ book The Purity Code, which is written for ‘tweens to prepare them for teenaged relationships. Rather than shy away from the tough questions, Burns addresses head on the issues facing 21st-century preteens. The book comes highly recommended to help kids and their parents build a solid “theology of healthy sexuality” and instill godly values about sex, their bodies, and relationships. The Purity Code In honor of God, my family, and my future spouse, I commit my life to sexual purity. This, in short, is the “Purity Code,” and the author further shares with youth: “Can you believe that the decisions you make today can affect you for the rest of your life? That’s why thousands of preteens

and teens are committing to the Purity Code. It’s a promise to God, your family, and your future spouse to live a life of sexual integrity and purity. It might sound easy, but it actually takes an incredible amount of faith in God and a lot of self-discipline to make it work. To fully live by the Purity Code, you need to understand sex and your body. This book is a must read if you’ve ever wondered: What do the changes in my body mean? Am I old enough to go out on a date? How far is too far? What do I do if I think I’ve been sexually abused? Can I get an S.T.D. without having sex? They’re probably some of your most embarrassing questions, but you’ll need honest answers to make the important decision to keep your body, mind, eyes, and heart pure. With the Purity Code as your lifelong personal challenge, you’ll honor both God and yourself, and you’ll

be healthier and happier for life! A Note to Parents Burns reminds us that “Kids learn best when they talk and you listen,” and he encourages parents to read Teaching Your Children Healthy Sexuality before reading The Purity Code together with their children. Further, he counsels that every child is different, so some material may need to be adapted to fit each maturity levels when discussing the questions at the end of each chapter. Burns writes for the Christian Broadcasting Network, and I stumbled his article about the “purity code,” plus concepts of “radical respect,” “exclusive and inclusive dating,” “socialization” and more. Visit cbn.com/family/youth/ burns-teens-dating.aspx to read the article and Amazon.com to purchase the book (just search by author and title). It may just help you and your kiddos stay the course during the turbulent teen years.

C3 Networking Group By Ann Baker Have you heard of C3 Networking? This group is West Houston / Katy’s premier membership of networkers. By attending strategic breakfast and lunch events, members gain the opportunity to promote their businesses, share ideas, gain professional development, add contacts and, of course, business referrals. The goal is to connect the businesses, people, and ministries of Katy/West Houston as Christians, promoting member’s businesses, ministries and services, and helping individuals in need through serving the community and the world together. The group is headed by Kirk Rightmire, who has been in the sales, marketing, and promotions industry for 21-years. He knows that success in business comes from building and maintaining relationships through referrals, professional development, and confidence in products and services. “By building a network of resources for referrals, sales training, job opportunities, your success can be assured by motivating you to be the best in your area of expertise,” he says, and invites the community of Christian businesses to join him. Would you like to have lunch or breakfast at your business? Let Kirk know at kirk@c3networking.org. You can also connect on Facebook and share the group highlights on Twitter and Pinterest. Visit the website at www.c3networking.org.
