Greetings! Letter From The Editor in Chief This time of year has us focusing on our blessings, which come in many forms. For some, the news of a cancer-free life is something to celebrate, and we are thrilled to share assistant principal Joshua Martinez’ status! For others, their journey through hospice care encourages us to live bravely. This is the case of former NFL player Bryan Caldwell and his wife Krista, an admissions nurse at Houston Hospice. It is an honor to publish their story. Take a peek at our “Critters in Katy” column, which has valuable information for pet lovers. In fact, this issue is full of interesting stories from fellow Christians, and below you can “meet” some of our columnists who make it all happen! We hope these stories are a blessing to you all! Christian Business Profile: Cynthia Cavin of Katy Mills Chick-fil-A By Claudia Richter Photography by Nikki Guest Meet Cynthia Cavin, owner/operator of Chick-fil-A Katy Mills. Two years ago she opened the doors of her restaurant, the third of its kind in Katy, and embarked on a lifelong dream of owning her own business. Around the same time she married Hershell Cavin and became stepmom to three fun-loving children, Jackson, Emma and Madeline. Her family attends Second Baptist Church and posed (with the exception of Madeline) at Katy Heritage Park for the cover of this issue – along with the iconic Chick-fil-A cow mascot. To most people, the challenges of having so much on their plate would seem daunting. But to her family, friends and especially Chickfil-A, Inc., it is no surprise that these major life events have proven to be a great experience… and she wouldn’t have it any other way! She earned a degree in accounting from Texas A&M and spent 17 years with KPMG, one of the largest professional services companies in the world. Experiencing success there was nice, but she started to feel that something was missing. “Around year 14 I realized that while my job was rewarding, it was not my passion,” explains Cavin. “I knew that my passion was people and serving people.”

At the same time her brother-in-law, also an operator with Chickfil-A, suggested she explore the possibility of joining Chick-fil-A. Her business experience and people skills aligned with the faith-based company’s goal of providing quality food items and being a positive influence in the lives of others. It was a perfect fit. “I dove right in,” says Cavin. “I learned as much as I could about Chick-fil-A, and it resonated with me on a personal level. I love what I do!” She credits the CEO of Chick-fil-A, Inc., Dan Cathy, as a true model of a servant leader. “It is an honor to work for a company with a CEO who sets the example of serving others each day – no matter

who it is; it’s just how he is wired. I am extremely thankful to have this opportunity to work with such a wonderful organization.” About Chick-fil-A The story of Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy and the leadership of the Cathy family is inspiring. In 1946, Cathy opened his first restaurant, Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Georgia. He founded Chick-filA in the 1960s, and today it is still privately held and family owned with a wonderful corporate purpose: “to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on

all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.” Chick-fil-A has a 66-year tradition of supporting local charities, providing college scholarships for team members, supporting leadership and enrichment programs, as well as youth and education programs. With over 1800 locations in 39 states, there is plenty to celebrate, including the recent 50th anniversary of the famous boneless Original Chicken Sandwich. The Chick-fil-A cows shown in those well-known “EAT MOR CHIKIN” ads will reach a 20-year anniversary in 2015. Serving Locally Chick-fil-A Katy Mills hosts regular in-store special events that encourage quality family time. For example, every Tuesday night from 5:30 – 7:30 pm is Family Night, and features a variety of entertainment options and fun arts and crafts projects designed for kids of all ages. A complimentary ice cream topping bar is always at the ready to provide a special treat for guests. Additionally, every Thursday morning from 9 – 11 am, parents and younger children gather for a story time, face painting and balloon event that includes free coffee for the adults. “This is something we really enjoy doing,” says Cavin. “We always try to make these events special occasions that bring families together for a fun time. Parents can leave the cooking to us and the kids can be entertained or do something creative.” Interspersed throughout the year, Chick-fil-A Katy Mills also holds special events such as Family Date Night and Spirit Nights for schools, as well as partnering with local organizations for off-site events. In honor of Armed Forces Day, the store collected items that were sent to deployed military. Just around the corner on August 21, local seniors will be hosted on Senior Citizen’s Day. Additionally, Chick-fil-A Katy Mills has events related to partnerships with the Ringling Bros. &

Barnum & Bailey Circus, the Astros, the Dynamo and the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Exciting News! For coffee lovers, Chick-fil-A Katy Mills will be serving Thrive Farmers Coffee, a specialty-grade coffee and iced coffee, starting August 4, 2014! Also, Chick-fil-A cares about the environment, and all napkins, tray liners and Kid’s Meal bags are made from 100 percent recycled material. Foam cups can be recycled where facilities exist. “Katy is such a great place to have a business and to live,” says Cavin. “I really like the small town feel with so many big city amenities.” People who enjoy good food and positive corporate values can rest assured that Cavin surrounds herself with a great team who love to serve the community. “When our guests thank us for making their day brighter, they know that it is our pleasure!” she says. Students on the Trip of a Lifetime By Melanie Saxton How nice to usher in a new school year with memories of a trip to Rome! Recently a total of 41 Pope John XXIII high school students, faculty, and families, as well as Father Bruce Noble, traveled to Rome to witness the canonization of Popes John Paul II and John XXIII (the school’s patron). The school had initially planned a summer trip to Rome, but moved the date up to coincide with the event in Italy on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27. The high school campus binds many communities together and is home to students from all parts of Fort Bend, Katy, Cy-Fair and Houston. During the last school year, 150 of the 375 student body lived in Fort Bend County, with at least 75 commuting from the Sugar Land and Richmond/Rosenberg area. 132 students had Katy addresses. The school has similar enrollment for 2014/2015. The Itinerary The travelers were led by Principal Tim Petersen and enjoyed visiting religious sites throughout Italy: 1.) Venice, where Blessed John XXIII was patriarch, 2.) Assisi, where he contemplated and planned the Second Vatican Council, and 3.) Rome, where he served as Pontiff and called the Second Vatican Council. During the course of the trip students prayed the Liturgy of

the Hours, had an evening Mass, times of reflection, and meditation. Theology teachers Mr. Tim Caruthers (and his wife Jessi, a doctoral candidate at the University of St. Thomas) and Mr. Mark Baker assisted with the selection of sites based on their connection to Pope John XXIII and the history of Italy. Any student or family member was able to attend the trip as long as they could afford the cost. Upon arrival, the group reveled in the culture, the architecture of the major basilicas of the Eternal City, and the Christian bond of fellow Catholics from all over the world. We asked them to report back on this incredible journey.

and worst experience ever!” says student Kara Christopherson. She attended because she knew it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity and enjoyed visiting Assisi and St. Francis’ Basilica. “I witnessed Italian culture first hand and learned about all the churches, and how St. Francis received the stigmata,” she adds.

International Crowds The Vatican announced that delegations from more than 100 countries and at least 24 heads of state were expected to attend. Vatican Radio put the crowds at some 800,000 in the square, roads and gardens around the St. Peter’s area. CNN reported that another 500,000 followed the proceedings on giant screens set up around Rome. The crowds were enormous and filled the streets of Rome before dawn as people vied for a good view. A small group of students actually camped out the night prior to the canonization in St. Peter’s square with millions of others. “Camping out to get a good spot for the canonization was both the best

Student Recollections Lauren Lathrop looked forward to all the fun and amazing experiences, and wasn’t disappointed. “My favorite part was seeing all the different countries come peacefully together with their flags to see Pope John XXIII’s canonization,” she says. She also found that clothes are more expensive in Italy. Rachel Hamrock felt especially blessed because she attended both John Paul 11 Junior High and Pope John XX111 High School – and was able to witness the canonizations of such great men of faith. Her favorite memory was visiting Florence and experiencing European culture. Nichol Perez wanted to be able to look back and recall the date that she attended a historic canonization in beautiful Italy, rode a gondola and visited a coliseum. “I learned a lot about the artwork inside of St. Francis’ Church and Michelango’s artwork inside the Sistine Chapel… and the proper way to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain,” she says. More Than Just a Vacation Maddie Vuyk, a junior, was moved by the spiritual component of the journey. She commented, “The greatest part about this trip was that it did not just simply soothe my constantly aching travel sweet

tooth, but was a beautiful way in which I was able to experience first hand the art, history, and tradition at the seat of my faith. This was not just a school vacation with a series of educational tours along the way, but a true pilgrimage. The canonization of my school’s patron combined with witnessing his incorruptible body and the massive number of faithful that his actions touched gave this trip a deeper meaning to which all descriptions seem to fall short.”

Back to School… A New High School Opens in Katy By Ann Baker Just in time for the start of a new school year, Aristoi Classical Academy, a local charter school built around a classical liberal arts curriculum, has hired Mr. Matthew Watson as its Assistant Headmaster their new high school. For the past five years, Mr. Watson has been a highly regarded teacher and administrator at Pope John XXIII High School in Katy. Since arriving at Pope John in 2009, Mr. Watson has taught upper division honors and AP history, economics, and government classes, served as the History and Social Studies Department Chair, and led the school’s House System as its inaugural dean. Mr. Watson holds Master’s degrees in Early American History (University of Massachusetts - Amherst) and Teaching and Curriculum (Harvard University). He earned his B.A. in History (summa cum laude) from George Fox University in Oregon. He is a member of the Organization of American Historians and serves on the Board of Directors of the Houston-based Our Lady of Walsingham Institutes for Catholic Culture. Mr. Watson is a parishioner at St. Bartholomew’s in Katy, where he lives with his wife, Jennifer, and five children.

Aristoi Classical Academy is Growing Mr. Watson will work with Headmaster, Brenda Davidson, in developing Aristoi’s new high school. High school correlates with the period of classical liberal arts education known as the rhetoric stage. Beginning with ninth grade this fall (2014), high school students will study Western Civilization’s key literary and historical texts, work out their interpretations of the subject matter in seminar-style Socratic discussions, and learn to compose powerful written and oral arguments. Advanced courses in mathematics and the sciences will not only prepare students for college, but aim to develop well-ordered minds and an understanding of mankind’s place in the natural world. The liberal arts curriculum will be complimented by courses in Latin grammar and translation. Each year, students’ inquiry will be structured around a “Great Theme”—Man (Freshman Year), Society (Sophomore Year), Democracy ( Junior Year), and The Modern Age (Senior Year). Seniors will pose an historical, scientific, philosophical, or literary question and draft a Senior Thesis under the supervision of a chosen faculty advisor. Four years of rigorous study will culminate in the public presentation and defense of the Senior Thesis. About the Academy Aristoi is an open enrollment charter school serving grades K-8. Beginning in the fall of 2014, Aristoi will add one high school grade per year. The school’s mission is to provide students with an academically challenging Classical Liberal Arts education that encourages them to develop a passion for learning and that gives them the means to become responsible citizens of virtuous character.

Back to School and Cancer-Free! By Holly Chervnsik In the flurry of preparing for back-toschool, one local is especially grateful to be on campus. Fort Bend resident Joshua Martinez, an assistant principal at Janowski Elementary in Houston, is a devoted husband of 33 years and father to four grown children. We are privileged to share his medical journey as he faced a cancer diagnosis – and successful treatment. Foreshadowing Faith Joshua’s faith played a large role in his life before his diagnosis, and an even bigger part during his treatment and recovery. “The Lord was prominent throughout my battle against cancer, but even a few weeks prior to my diagnosis his work was evident, although I would not realize it until later,” he says. As an educator he enjoyed reading in the summertime, and in May 2012 his search for books seemed especially difficult. Nothing piqued his interest until he discovered “The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life” at his local library. Chapter nine addressed the subject of death was as impactful as anything he had ever read. Lewis stated that we as Christians probably don’t believe that

heaven is as great as the Bible depicts it, since death scares us. “It caused me to deal with my beliefs about the afterlife in a much more profound way than ever before,” says Martinez. Little did he know that the Lord had just given him an introduction to a real life lesson. He was about to tackle the possibility of death, up close and personal. A Son’s Recommendation His son, while in medical school, encouraged both Martinez and his wife Berta to get colonoscopies as a precaution due to their age. When the results came back with a diagnosis of colorectal cancer for Martinez, he says, “I knew immediately that I would be going to MD Anderson.” Less than a month later, he was seeing Dr. Sunil Patel,

oncologist at the MD Anderson location in Katy. The initial diagnosis was given after a colonoscopy in June. Martinez recalls getting the phone call and gathering the family afterwards to pray that it wasn’t cancer. “I was in denial and convinced that there was not definitive evidence that I was sick, and that an ultrasound would prove it,” he notes. Following a very painful ultrasound he asked the doctor when he would know if it was malignant or benign. “At that moment I realized my confusion (or denial) as both the doctor and my wife looked quizzically at each other. The doctor said clearly to me, “You have cancer.” The Great Physician Martinez held back tears until exiting the medical facility. Then his wife hugged him and reminded him that God is the “Great Physician,” and that they should trust Him. That was only the beginning. “This was, above all, a spiritual experience,” explains Martinez. “And I can point to a number of times where the Lord used my family, healthcare team, and situations to reveal His merciful love to me. Being in this situation now is also an answered prayer as I have the opportunity to share my story.”

August / September 2014

A Hero at Home and Beyond Martinez has been busy over the past year and a half with his cancer treatment. Since July of 2012, he has undergone chemotherapy and radiation, followed by surgery to remove part of his colon, and an additional six months of chemotherapy intravenously. Today Martinez is cancer-free and says he owes it all to God and His ambassadors – meaning the medical professionals who treated him and his family and friends who ministered daily. His wife was with him every step of the way, attending all appointments to take notes and helping to change their diet at home to speed up his recovery. Each time he had a chemo treatment, one of his daughters gave him a different superhero t-shirt to let her Dad know he was her hero. He still wears the shirts on a regular basis as a reminder of the battle he went through, and that he is survivor. Back to School Now Martinez will tackle the new school year with a clean bill of health, which has caused his family, church and campus family to rejoice. His testimony is that God, indeed, is the “Great Physician” and works through prayer and the efforts of a supportive earthly team.

God’s Critters in Katy By Paige Holsapple Is your pet wondering, “Hey, where did everyone go?” Back-to-school means our pets are faced with changes that are often confusing, like hectic mornings followed by a empty house. When household schedules change overnight, this can be particularly confusing for newly adopted pets. Consider these suggestions to help ease the transition in the weeks ahead. Separation Anxiety To keep your pet busy throughout the day, offer them a Kong™ rubber toy with peanut butter or treats – fill then freeze overnight) or other safe things for dogs to chew and cats to play with while you’re away. In fact, this just happens to be the favorite toy of “Officer Marcel,” a Katy ISD K9 Labrador we featured in our last issue! Local pet boutiques offer safe chewing alternatives for all sized pets. Just ask the staff if you need recommendations. For familiar sounds, leave on soothing music or the television. Think of ways to enrich their environment ahead of time so their boredom doesn’t create unwelcome habits. This is a good time to revisit crate training, too. But if you choose to crate your pet, plan to come home at lunch to let them out for a break or hire a local pet sit-

ter for a noon visit in your place. If your pet has serious anxiety issues, consult your vet for supplements and solutions. Ease the Stress with “Shuffling” If you normally rush around right before you leave to get to school or work on time (with backpacks flying as you rush out the door), mix it up! Instead of waiting until the actual week of big changes to the routine, go through and gather up backpacks, purse and keys to head out the door, then promptly return. Try stretching out the length of time gradually, and your pet will learn to trust that you will be back. Active at Home Just because summertime is over, don’t forget to keep up the outdoor exercise and play with your kids and pets after homework and dinner. With the season still being so hot, it’s nice to go for a walk, a swim, or play ball in the backyard later in the evening. Take the opportunity to readjust the schedule by spending more time in the evening with your pets so

they don’t miss out on quality time with their family. Pet School Why not sign up your pet for basic obedience classes to brush up on good habits! This will provide mental stimulation and a social outlet at a local obedience and pet training facility. There are many to choose from in our area, so research and choose the right one for your pet. Another awesome alternative for pet boredom is doggy daycare! Many local kennel and boarding businesses offer special weekly rates for regulars and offer options so check them out online and call for details. Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic Matters! Join us Saturday, September 13 at Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming in Katy from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. – get a low-cost chip for your pet! During our new fall schedules, the temptation for your pet to try and “find” you may be especially strong as your family disperses for work and school. God forbid they wander away, but unfortunately it does happen more often than we’d like to think… so chipping cats and dogs can help ensure they are found and returned home. Follow us on Facebook at the Cinco Ranch Area Lost & Found Network. Paige Holsapple is one of Katy’s well-known animal advocates, often helping owners locate missing pets. GiGi’s Top 10s for Graceful Living By GiGi Lewis www.clubetiquette.com “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.” James 1:5 (World Bible Translation). We can all use back-to-school etiquette and organizational tips, which over time become life-long habits. 1. Be prepared the night before to make the morning go smoother. Sign all papers. Pull all clothes. Allow plenty of time for your child to dress and eat in the morning. 2. Be on time for carpool. Don’t make the driver wait. 3. If your child rides a bus, teach them bus courtesies, such as no pushing, how to handle when someone is sitting next to a friend they want to sit with, etc.

4. Create a landing spot for backpacks; papers in, papers out. Make it a habit to clean these out daily so that they don’t become overwhelming. Allow extra time to fill out the plethora of forms that arrive that first week by not making unnecessary plans. It

Pastor Profile: Meet Dr. Keith Robinson By June Summerfield Seldom do we meet a chaplain with such a multifaceted career. Dr. Keith Robinson, a retired dentist who resides in Fort Bend, once specialized in maxillofacial prosthodontics and dental oncology. For over 30 years he has also been involved in the media. Concerned with social issues, he produced and hosted the emmy-award winning TV series, “The Brutal Truth,” “The Brutal Truth: A Violence Documentary,” and “The Brutal Truth: Protecting the Family from Violence.” His first local radio show was titled “Now that Makes me Mad” – a forum for his listening public to voice their issues. He is a former nationally syndicated talk show host of “America Talks Health with Dr. Keith Robinson,” as well as a bestselling author and vice president and executive editor-at-large of USAfrica Online, a respected international news organization. Today he is the founder of AlleyGrin Productions, a company that produces videos and television shows that “move the soul.” But perhaps Robinson’s most important role is that of a chaplain. He has served as Corps Commander of the Houston Regional Community Chaplain’s Corps. Chaplaincy allows him to minister to others with emergency psychological first aid and interventional care.

Assisting Those in the Media Robinson’s background in health and media merged when he became ordained through the International Fellowship of Chaplains. As a critical incident responder, much of his work is with reporters, editors, photographers and videographers who are exposed to human suffering and horrific trauma that overloads their normal coping mechanisms. Although the viewing audience may not realize it, many in the media cover unimaginably tragic events day in and day out, including

homicides, suicides, kidnappings, drownings, tornados, hurricanes, school shootings, and line of duty deaths in police organizations. Robinson has received extensive training in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) as well as specialized training in issues unique to the lives of those in the media. When these gruesome assignments take a toll, Robinson responds with emergency psychological care (not psychological counseling or psychiatry) to help address overloaded emotional systems and to help people understand the symptoms. The goal is to help regain control of their lives and resume one of the most difficult professions around. Community Collaboration Robinson has established working relationships with crisis response teams, Homeland Security, FEMA, Kidnap and Ransom response organizations, police, fire, military, and other crisis response organizations. “Our chaplains are equipped to understand the lives, fears, requirements, and sensitivities of a broad range of media professionals,” he explains. His company, PTSD Media Solutions, is always on call, and like other first responders, his team is ready to deploy to any place needed. Ministers in the Workplace Robinson is often asked, “What exactly is a chaplain?” He explains that a chaplain is a minister in the workplace, while pastors care for people primarily inside churches. Chaplains are constitutionally guaranteed confidentiality (Lemon v. Kurtzman) so that all matters that transpire between an individual and a chaplain are

protected. “We help all people, irrespective of race, gender or religion, and we are not there to convert anyone to any specific religion. Our responsibility is to walk next to people who are experiencing symptoms and help them,” explains Robinson. “And when questions about the spiritual side of life come up, we are the right professionals to address those questions.” Learn more about Dr. Robinson and his professional services at www.ptsdmediasolutions.com.

There Is No Backup Plan By Dr. Kenneth Lynn Lewis Our youngest son applied to a college. That’s right, just one. After extensive research across the globe considering vastly different schools and programs from California to Florida, America to Australia, only one stood out to him. So, he invested significant time completing an extensive application, audition (including the writing and performing of at least three original songs), and interview process. As I share his journey with others, people often ask, “Where else has he applied?” or, even more directly, “What’s his backup plan?” An engineer by training and early career, I am a big fan of redundancy, and typically design for it. All 66 projects I worked on as an engineer included a series of redundancies built into the primary designs, as well outright backup plans for construction, use, and in case of possible failure. I have seen too many things collapse, too many surprises upset very thorough and well-intentioned plans, and too many “sure things” turn into broken and shattered dreams. Most of my forethoughts of actions and adventures – sometimes moments, but often days, weeks, even years and decades in the works – include a backup plan. I may not write every plan out or broadcast my dispositions, but my mind rehearses options and scenarios keyed

to potential triggers. So, I ponder the wisdom of anyone proceeding with anything with no backup plan. However, in my pondering, I am struck by the reality that in the biggest and most important things in my life – specifically my life and my everlasting soul – I have no backup plan.

I have cast my lot – all that I have, all that I am, and all that I ever hope to be, both now and forevermore – with Jesus Christ, and with Jesus Christ alone. I am trusting that He is the Way, the truth, and the life, and apart from Him, there is no other. In life and in death, if the Jewish and Christian scriptural promises are not true, I have no supplementary options on the table, or waiting for me out back, or buried or locked away somewhere that I can access in an emergency. I have no additional lifelines or phonea-friends, no other “Get out of Hell Free” cards, no magic mirrors or

escape portals or reset buttons or time machines. I don’t have a list of other religions to run to if Christianity doesn’t work out. I am not secretly banking on an underlying Godless reality of meaninglessness temporal existence and random chance. I am not presuming an impersonal fundamental materiality of eternal oneness and unity. I am not supposing a rationally enlightened allegiance to a future nothingness. I am not expecting an anonymous continuance or terminus devoid of justice, righteous punishments, and gracious rewards. I am not casting my hopes in prevailing victoriously over and through a maze of emotional, intellectual, moral, physical, and political battles in a worldly survival of the fittest contest. I am not trusting my future hopes in a promising pastor, politician, priest, or professional; a particular program, prosperous possessions, or perceived power; or my ability to produce plentiful points on the scoreboard of life. I am not hoping to one day brilliantly figure everything out and have all my intelligent (and foolish) questions answered so I can then – knowing all things there are to be known – make a completely informed and rational decision that requires absolutely zero faith. No, I only have one plan – trust in Jesus Christ. There is no backup plan. Dr. Kenneth Lynn Lewis serves as President of The Bible Seminary in Katy, Texas and is the author of “Meat and Potatoes for the Soul”.

What Can Investors Learn from the All Stars? By Pat Doucette Financial Advisor Baseball’s best players gathered in Minneapolis to participate in the All-Star Game this past July. If you’re a fan or even a “weekend athlete,” you can admire these players for their abilities, even if you — like the vast majority of humanity — can’t hope to duplicate them. But if you’re an investor, you may be able to learn some practical lessons from the All Stars. So let’s look at a few common All Star traits to see how they might apply to investors: • Consistency – All Stars typically don’t just have a few good weeks or months – they tend to be consistently excellent, year after year. As an investor, you, too, need to strive for consistency. Instead of periodically chasing after “hot” stocks, try to follow a long-term strategy by staying invested in the financial markets, through both “up” and “down” periods, and by rebalancing your holdings, as needed, to reflect changes in your life.

• Ability to avoid errors – Everyone makes mistakes, but All Stars seem to make fewer of them. Whether it’s fielding balls cleanly, successfully executing a sacrifice bunt or not walking a player with the bases loaded, All Stars seem to avoid errors while making the right moves at the right time. When you invest, you need to avoid

common “errors,” such as investing either too conservatively or too aggressively. Instead of going to either of these extremes, build a portfolio appropriate for your risk tolerance but still capable of helping you reach your goals. • Preparedness – All Stars keep themselves in great shape and often develop additional skills as the years go by, such as developing a new pitch or learning to hit the ball to different parts of the field. By preparing themselves in this way, they can take advantage of opportunities as they arise. As you invest, you will also need to be prepared to take advantage of new opportunities. One such way to prepare is to have enough liquidity in your portfolio to make appropriate investment moves. In addition to preparing for opportunities, you’ll need to prepare for challenges that could jeopardize your investment strategy. So, for example, you may want to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses. With such a fund in place, you may not have to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or a big bill from the dentist.

investments are not for everyone – and smart, “everyday” investors know this and stick with proven strategies and comprehensible investments. You may never step foot on a baseball diamond. But as an investor, you can still pick up some “gems” of wisdom from the All Stars. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Visit 888 Avenue D, Ste. A, Katy, TX 77493 or call 281-3916137 for more information.

• Awareness of limits – Not even the best All Stars can do everything well. A good “singles hitter,” for instance, won’t waste a lot of effort in trying to hit home runs, while a powerful, but slow, slugger might not attempt to steal a base. Investors have limits, too, based on their sophistication and their financial resources. To illustrate: Some wealthy and highly experienced investors may embark on complex or risky strategies, or purchase hard-tounderstand investments. But these risky techniques and complex

Adventures in the Mission Field: Fresh and New By Steve Dyer The school bus full of kids is rolling down the street again. I feel the change. Fall is here with football and hunting season. Pretty soon a big cool blast will sweep this year’s summer away for good, and everything will seem fresh and new. Since Mrs. Maca’s kindergarten class way back when, this time of year has always felt like a beginning to me. New clothes and supplies. New friends and new stories from old friends. A new direction and exciting possibilities for the next turn of the calendar. I feel stronger and smarter than last year. It makes my missionary mind travel to what I have witnessed, and what has happened to an ordinary guy like me. Just when I thought life had become stagnant and boring, something always, always happened to show me there was a next level. God is always showing me how to grow. I think about Efraim, the 8-year-old orphan in Cuzco, Peru. He must have felt quite a new beginning when he came out of the hospital and was reunited with his brother after almost being beaten to death and drowning. A bad man had beat him unconscious, tied him in a flour sack and thrown him in the polluted Cusco River for dead. But the Lord sent a woman who “accidentally” discovered him, and the brothers arrived

in our orphanage and accepted Christ. Efraim is now a top student – another new beginning. Hugo, another 8-year-old orphan, had a plan to be an American style gangster with a Thompson sub-machine gun and a pinstripe suit. Nobody would ever hurt him again. It was pretty ambitious for an on the streets of Cusco. The Lord guided Hugo to our orphanage, and now he has a new beginning in law school. He never got the “tommy-gun”, but he really looks good in that suit. I think of when I was baptized by my friend Neil Jeffries in Dallas, and how I felt when I came up out of the water. I knew I had gotten something, and at the time I didn’t really know what all it was or what I should do with it. It was kinda like getting the free gift of a brand new jet. I was happy to have it, but I didn’t yet know how to fly. But that was okay. What I can tell you for sure is: It felt fresh and it felt new. Steve Dyer is a Christian missionary who traveled to Peru in 2007. It changed his life forever. He has been a real estate broker for 25 years and his wife Sheri is an attorney and CPA. They left their careers to expand their mission services and recently returned to encourage others to serve. Read about his missionary adventures in The Secret Passages of Stevie the Guide. Meet Krista and Bryan Caldwell: Hospice Nurse and NFL Player By Melanie Saxton Imagine being a hospice nurse married to an NFL player… who is, himself, in hospice care. This is Krista Caldwell’s life – a very personal mix of marriage, career and a poignant medical journey. Three months after graduating from nursing school (in September 2012) Krista’s dear husband and best friend, Bryan, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Their story is one of strength, dignity and perseverance, and we are honored to share it. Krista’s Calling “I graduated from nursing school relatively late in life, at age 42, with the intention of working for Houston Hospice,” says Krista. Her father had been on service in 2010, and she was inspired by this painful, albeit beautiful, experience. She volunteered for Houston Hospice prior to graduation, hoping to become familiar with hospice services. After working a year on med surge at her local hospital, she was hired by the Houston Hospice El Campo team as an admissions nurse. Bryan Caldwell, NFL Player “Bryan is phenomenal — a professional football player, rancher

and surfer; this man embodies strength,” says Krista of her husband, who played for the Dallas Cowboys, the Houston Oilers, and the

Philadelphia Eagles. The morning before his diagnosis at the ER, he mowed the yard with a collapsed lung! Bryan fought through chemo for six months, and when told that his cancer was unresponsive to treatment he continued fighting on his own terms – holistically and spiritually. “When I was hired by Lisa Machen, RN, PCM in July of 2013, she was well aware of Bryan’s condition,” says Krista. “However, she knew my heart was in hospice and she believed, rightly so, that when his disease progression began causing issues, she and the Houston Hospice El Campo Team would be there for Bryan and me both.” In December of 2013, Bryan’s cancer was progressing to the point that hospice care was needed, and both Dr. Barker and Lisa Machen came to the Caldwell’s home to assess and admit him onto service. Blending Duty and Friendship Krista notes that it is difficult to describe the blurred lines that can occur in these kinds of situations. Bryan’s case manager, Jackie Hooper, RN, is Krista’s friend, mentor, co-worker… and her husband’s hospice nurse. “Bryan is her patient, but he is my life,” says Krista. “I am able to be a calm patient advocate for all of our patients — but not for my husband.” The phone calls and “voice of reason” given by Jackie through this process have been beyond words. Bryan is what they all would describe as a “difficult patient.” He may sleep 18 hours a day and then get up and decide to chop down a tree… or disappear to go fishing for hours without his phone. “Trying to keep him safe and manage his symptoms, while encouraging his autonomy, has been an arduous

effort,” says Krista. Jackie has developed a wonderful rapport with Bryan, educating and supporting his efforts to “be a man” to his fullest. As a case manager, she is a wonderful example of patient advocacy. Krista describes her as proactive, yet equanimous at her core. A Supportive Team “And then there is me, with a husband who’s a patient on hospice, still learning and finding my footing in my chosen field,” says Krista. She notes that Jackie, Lisa and the rest of the team have exemplified patience and support. By sharing hugs, a kind ear, and special notes and cards, they have managed to help her feel grounded and protected throughout this painful process. The Journey Knowing the “end result” of Bryan’s illness does not lessen the journey for the Caldwell couple. “I truly cannot fathom walking this road without the Houston Hospice El Campo Team. Their gratitude and love is humbling and inspiring,” says Krista. The nurses walk beside her, pulling ahead and pushing behind when needed. “I am inspired by them professionally and personally, and I am so very grateful.” Hospice Care is About… Life Houston Hospice is active throughout Fort Bend, Harris, Waller, Wharton, Montgomery, Matagorda, Austin, Colorado, Brazoria and Jackson Counties. The services offered are about life. Many may not realize that hospice care can help patients for months and months – not just at the very end. The mission is to help families focus on creating precious memories while providing comfort care, respite care, counselors and chaplains. Care is provided in-home and in residential facilities. Founded in 1980, Houston Hospice has evolved into the area’s oldest, largest, community-supported, independent hospice. Thanks to the support of corporate and private sponsors, the staff serves Texans from all socio-economic groups irrespective of a person’s ethnicity, beliefs or ability to pay. Dear Doctor: What is “Swimmer’s Ear” and How Can I Prevent It? By Dr. Saffari Summer isn’t over yet! Some local pools will remain open well beyond the start of school… which means swimmer’s ear can still cause problems. What exactly is it and how is it prevented? Read ahead… Swimmer’s ear or Otitis Externa is an acute infection and inflammation of the ear canal. Patients with Otitis Externa typically are presented with an acute ear pain with or without discharge or decreased hearing. Bacterial infections are the most common cause of Otitis Externa. Additional causes include idiopathic, swimming, earwax buildup, trauma, chemical irritants, fungal infection and others. The treatment is directed towards the cause of Otitis Externa and it is usually treated with 7 to 10 days of topical antibiotics prescribed by a physician. There are a few simple things that can be done to reduce the risk of getting Otitis Externa. Consider wearing occlusive earplugs when swimming. For those patients who have recurrent cerumen impaction or buildup of ear wax, removal of earwax regularly by a physician is highly recommended. Avoid using the common ear cotton-tipped swabs for ear cleaning since they may cause irritation of the ear canal and potential risk for Otitis Externa.

Dr. Behrooz Saffari is a Family Medicine Physician for the UT Health Science Center at Houston and provides patient care at UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. To schedule an appointment, please call 713-486-5300.

The State of the Parties By Gary Gillen Fort Bend County is fortunate to have many individuals who care deeply about the community, stretching from Katy to Sugar Land (and beyond). They recognize that the government plays a large role in the economic development of the county. For that reason, they have become engaged in the political world. Some are Tea Party supporters, others Libertarian, but most are Republican or Democrats. Interestingly, the Tea Party in some states is predominantly Democratic, while others such as Texas are Republican. But that is a column for another day. The two major parties here are the Republican and Democrat Parties. Texas law anticipates primary elections being held by these two parties and their candidates facing off in the November general elections. Many voters are not even aware that the primary elections, by Texas law, are party elections. For many years the two parties have hired the Fort Bend County Elections Administration to administer the elections, but they are party elections. After the Civil War and freedom for the slaves in Fort Bend County, the Republican Party, which had set the slaves free, became the predominant political party here. Over time, the hatred of the “carpetbaggers” led to the demise of the Republican Party and the

ascendency of the Democrats. And the Democrats held power in all the elective seats in the county until the 1970s when the Republican Party started to become active, eventually taking every county-wide seat and every precinct, save one.

Traditionally, city and school board races have been deemed “non-partisan.” There is no “party” primary election to determine who the party’s candidate is to be for these races because they are

It’s All In Your Head Women should feel healthy, vibrant and strong throughout their adult lives. If you've been told, “it's all in your head” or “learn to live with it,” read on.

Maggie's story Maggie came to Hotze Health & Wellness Center after suffering for seven years from depression and fatigue, which developed after giving birth to her second child. She also had a lifelong history of cold hands and feet and sensitivity to cold. She was experiencing significant hair loss, was constipated and had severe muscle aches. Even after sleep, Maggie never felt rested.

Maggie's treatment

Maggie had experienced recurrent sinus infections and headaches over the past seven years, for which she had taken antibiotics. She also complained of recurrent abdominal cramping and bloating associated with the ingestion of sugar and bread products, which she craved. Since her last pregnancy, Maggie's menstrual cycles had been irregular. She had gained 30 pounds over the past seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire, and felt that she was in a “brain fog.”

Maggie's name could easily be erased from her chart and replaced with the names of thousands of other women in midlife whom we have evaluated. Maggie's doctor made her feel that she was a hypochondriac and emotionally inadequate. We explained to her that her symptoms were very common to women in her age group and were easily treated.

Maggie had sought the care of numerous physicians. They told her that she was “depressed” and prescribed antidepressants. A friend of hers, who was a patient at Hotze Health & Wellness Center, told her that there was a natural alternative treatment for her problems, so Maggie came to us for an evaluation.

She had an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body's ability to use thyroid hormones. It was the change in her hormones that triggered her allergy disorder, which in turn led to recurrent sinus infections. The antibiotics that she had taken for her infections also killed normal bacteria in her body and allowed yeast problems to occur.

If you are like Maggie and you want to get your life back, then contact us today at

Maggie was prescribed natural bioidentical hormones, natural thyroid supplementation, and was treated for allergies with sublingual immunizing drops given under the tongue daily. Within two months, Maggie's depression and fatigue had disappeared. She was able to discontinue her antidepressants. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!” August / September 2014

not partisan races. When you vote for your mayor, city councilman or school board member you will not see a “D” or an “R” after any of the candidate’s names. Would it matter to which party a candidate to city or school board race claims affiliation? Would it be instructive or constructive to know? I believe it is reasonable to inquire of the political philosophy of a candidate to any office. Party affiliation might a useful clue in determining a candidate’s likely actions in office. This is, of course, not a perfect or even near perfect predictor. In one recent race, a candidate for Mayor (who votes in Republican primaries) was found to be a major donor to President Barack Obama and many Democrat and liberal organizations. There is really no better way to predict a candidate’s actions than to ask him or her. When one is the minority party, it is easier to rally your supporters and fight a common foe. When a party is the predominate party,

Susan Terry

it is equally easy to spend time and energy fighting members of one’s own party who are not as dedicated to the cause as we might perceive ourselves. We have seen this before. When Democrats held every major seat in the county, the party began to disintegrate, eventually dividing into two camps. This provided an opening for Republicans to exploit. Ultimately, the Republicans swept the county wide offices and most of the county precincts, as well. Having served as Republican Party Chairman in the past, I have seen the internal fighting among factions of the Republican Party in a very real way. I have often said I ran for that office to fight Democrats, but never had the chance because I was drawn into so many internal fights. As the majority party, the factions of the party have lost the focus a common foe provides. Some party members are so busy litmus testing their own candidates that they cannot see a looming danger. First, the individuals who have funded this party for years have become disillusioned. They will not support Democrats, but are less enthusiastic in supporting the local party. Second, and far more dangerous, is the visible and very public efforts of the Fort Bend Democrats. They are supporting candidates for the “non-partisan” races, the city council and school board races. It is really a brilliant move on their part. They accomplish their goal of quietly electing people who believe that more government, more regulation, and higher taxes will improve our lives. Then they are positioned to build name recognition and hire employees who will carry out their liberal plans for decades. That name recognition might translate to election to higher office in the future and the liberalization of our county. The Republicans of Fort Bend County would do well to pay attention.

Keeping the Faith: A Lesson For Life By Ronnie McBrayer I remember my children starting a new school in a new community one fall. On the first day of class, climbing on the bus with all their Number Two pencils and three-ring binders, they also carried enough anxiety to fill a mama’s boy’s backpack. It isn’t just the reality of a new school that put them on edge; it was middle school, and that is scary enough all on its own. For the record, I wouldn’t go back and repeat those few years of middle school (we called it “junior high” back in the day) even if you promised me a war pension. It was, without a doubt, one of the more miserable seasons of my life. My body was awkward and out of control, hair began growing in strange places, my hormones and emotions were stampeding like angry cattle, and my face broke out like a pimpled topography map. To make matters and passions worse, my twin sister and I began climbing the escalating mountains of puberty as our mother entered the refining fires of menopause (no wonder my father was working 80 hours a week!). I fear the same thing is now happening in my own home, but I digress.

Yes, middle school was hard – very hard – on my children, and not just because of growth spurts and the new neighborhood in which we lived. It was hard because at this age children become acutely aware of their social status and standing. They will do most anything to “fit in” or to win the coveted prize of acceptance from their classmates. Acceptance is a good and healthy thing. It is incredibly validating to be welcomed by a group of people or to gain the respect and admiration of your peers. But it doesn’t take long for this

normal and valid need for acceptance to slide into some very dark territory. I so readily recognize this tendency in my children because I recognize this in myself. Adults, not just pimpled teenagers, want the approval of others. In short, we desperately want to be loved and will do anything to get it. That’s what makes forty-year-olds behave as adolescents. You can have a house in the burbs, a nearly four-figure car payment, three kids in soccer… and still act like a 7th grader trying to make it with the “in” crowd. Splintered, needy, and anxious, we spend the lion’s share of our energy and years of our lives chasing after the validation of others, a validation that we think will make us whole. We become slaves to the expectations of others while simultaneously manipulating those expectations to get what we feel we need. It is exhausting, for we do and say things we don’t mean to hold on to approval we don’t need, wasting time and energy we don’t have. And for what? A few emotional strokes, the fleeting approval of someone who is as fractured as we are, approval that lasts for about five minutes, and then the grueling exercise must begin all over again. Here’s some good news – good news for my children and for the rest of us: When you are deeply, madly, unconditionally, and fiercely loved – as God loves us – you can let the foolish exercise of chasing the approval of others go. If we could get it through our thick skulls, our variegated defense mechanisms, and down into the basement of our hearts that we are always loved; that that our sins and failures cannot change God’s untiring affection for us; that our acne scars and awkwardness do not forfeit his acceptance, then we might enjoy a degree of confidence and freedom that we never thought possible. We can – yes we really

can – reach that point in life where we no longer need the love and validation of people, because we have come to know and experience the unconditional love of God. Then we can be free from the ruthless, unmerciful demands of uncertain and provisional affections. Now that is a lesson for middle school and for life. Ronnie McBrayer is a nationally syndicated columnist, pastor, and author. His newest book is “The Gospel According to Waffle House.” You can read more at www.ronniemcbrayer.me.

A Glimpse Abroad at Soul Stirring Structures By Melanie Saxton Every once in a while we hear of churches with unusual architecture, none more so than those designed by Geometrica. The company, located in Cypress, builds unique houses of worship all over the world with their trademarked system known as Freedomes®. These domes and long span structures are constructed with artistic geometric patterns, making the worship experience novel. Fortunately, I was able to visit two of these churches (based in Mexico) this past June. The images are so impressive that I asked the company to share photography of churches from other parts of the world – which is quite amazing. Enjoy this pictorial pilgrimage to some of the most unique houses of worship south of the border, as well as in Honduras and Africa. Skyward in Monterrey The blend of space and spirituality at San Juan de los Lagos in Monterrey, Mexico is almost poetic. A stunning sculpture of metal

weaves upward in a heavenly spiral, while underneath a wide-open sanctuary basks in the architectural beauty from two levels. The interior and exterior aesthetic transcends physical borders and makes

this large worship area “feel” more intimate and purposeful, exemplifying soul-stirring worship and lending an artistic impact to Monterrey’s landscape and beyond. A Practical Parish San Juan Bautista de la Salle, another close-knit congregation in Monterrey, is a revered architectural icon in the community. The unusual exterior – a geometric dome – covers an interior without walls or barriers. This allows the flow of communal traffic to accommodate services, weddings, funerals and public gatherings. This structure merges unique design with freestyle architecture through the use of a lightweight steel and aluminum alloy frame, perfectly proportioned and built to last for generations. Texas Music Festival By Ann Baker If you are a classical music lover, you may have attended the Emmanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival. Marking its 25th anniversary season this past June, it showcased performances by outstanding student musicians, distinguished conductors and faculty artists from all over the world. The festival has become Houston’s largest classical summer music presenter with nearly 30 performances, many free or at a nominal cost. Most concerts are held indoors on the University of Houston campus (Moores Opera House and Dudley Recital Hall). A Gift to Music Lovers Franz Anton Krager, UH Professor and Conductor of the Grand Celebratory Opening Concert, describes the festival as a gift to classical music lovers in Houston. “The final product can be stunning, because while the students may lack years of professional experience, they meet each challenge with youthful enthusiasm and sheer determination. The audience can feel their triumph as they master these difficult works.” This one-month international music residency program included guest luminaries, such as violinist Leon Spierer and his son, conductor Carlos Spierer, who studied at the University of Houston from 1982 to 1984. Conductors Daniel Hege and MeiAnn Chen were on site along with the Houston Symphony Chorus. A Classical Garage Band Texas Music Festival Orchestra Series is known for bringing Classical music’s rising stars to Houston. Time for Three, the world’s first classical music garage band, made a debut performance at the Grand Finale Concert on June 28 with Zachary (Zach) De Pue on

violin, Nicolas (Nick) Kendall on violin, Ranaan Meyer on double bass and Matt Scarano on drums. A Dedication “The 25th anniversary season was dedicated to the memory of David Tomatz, co-founding director, who passed away this past January,” says Alan Austin, TMF General and Artistic Director. The TMF Orchestra performed Mahler’s “Resurrection” as a tribute to him. For the Students Nearly 400 applicants from 18 foreign countries applied for the TMF Orchestral Institute this year, representing such noted music schools as The Juilliard School, Indiana University, Cleveland and Peabody Institutes of Music, Eastman School of Music, and Houston’s Shepherd and Moores Schools of Music. The 95 participants in the Festival Orchestra were chosen by highly competitive live and recorded auditions. “Our application numbers keep rising because the students see the depth and scope of our repertoire – it’s not everyday that a musician – student or professional – is handed Mahler’s ‘Resurrection,’ Wagner’s “The Ring Without Words” or Bartok’s “Miraculous Mandarin Suite. They have to stretch themselves, but they relish the opportunity,” notes Austin. Learn more about the Texas Music Festival at www.tmf. uh.edu.

The First Lady of Texas Visits Historical Sites By Melanie Saxton If you love historic sites in towns across our state, then you share an interest with Anita Perry. As the longest serving First Lady of Texas and inductee of the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, she works with the Texas Historical Society to visit newly announced Main Street communities. To date, Perry has visited a total of 49 cities and welcomed them to the program in this annual tradition. Main Street Designation The national Main Street revitalization effort for historic downtowns was formed more than 30 years ago as a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The statewide Texas Main Street Program operates as part of the Community Heritage Development Division of the Texas Historical Commission. In 1981, following a pilot project to address the decline of America’s downtowns, the Texas Main Street Program became one of the oldest and largest statewide coordinating programs in the nation to help preserve and revitalize historic downtown districts. Each year the Texas Historical Society selects up to five Texas cities for official Main Street designation. Communities of all sizes with historic downtowns or historic neighborhood commercial dis-

tricts are eligible to participate. Those that qualify receive design and technical consultation from state historic preservation professionals, architects and consultants, as well as marketing, promotion and onsite manager training. Our Neighbor to the West Sealy, just west of Brookshire on I-10, was thrilled to become one of the newest Texas cities to be accepted into the Main Street program. This past spring, some local Katy business owners were on hand to celebrate, including Cheri Bumbera of Bumbera’s Perfor-

mance Associates. She witnessed the First Ladyspeak at the Sealy Main Street Dedication Ceremony. Sealy student choirs captured the First Lady’s heart with their rendition of the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.” Perry noted that it’s important to have a program dedicated to main streets that enables people to gather and salute their heroes. She announced to a crowd of approximately 100, “I want to thank you for preserving the City of Sealy for your children,” and noted the importance of historical buildings in the stimulation of economic growth. Completing the Tour After departing Sealy, Perry traveled to Caldwell and Waco to thank them for their longstanding work to save and enhance their Texas heritage and culture. This concluded her last tour to newly accepted towns during her husband, Governor Rick Perry’s, reign as Governor. First Lady’s Texas Treasures Award Since 2009, our First Lady has acted as honorary chair in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission to honor communities demonstrating a high level of creativity and ingenuity in recognizing and preserving their authentic Texas “sense of place.”

These communities demonstrate stewardship and a preservation ethic as an example for others across Texas. The City of Denton won the award in 2014, Paris in 2013, San Angelo in 2012, Brownsville in 2011, Nacogdoches, San Marcos, and Waxahachie in 2010, and Castroville, Georgetown, and Mount Vernon in 2009. We thank the Governor and First Lady for their tireless service to the people and places of Texas. Visit www.thc.state.tx.us to learn more about the Texas Historical Society.

Back-to-School... With the Help of KEYS By Beth Hughes All it takes is one person to change your trajectory in life. For Mayde Creek high schooler Lilly Cornelio, that person was Manuela Izaguirre – a stranger who helped her achieve her dream of going to college. Hardships and Hurdles While most high school girls are thinking about prom and makeup, Lilly Cornelio’s reality wasn’t as carefree. Her mother was deployed to Iraq, she lived with a grandmother who didn’t speak English, and the family had an abundance of financial woes. Lilly’s grades started to slip drastically in middle school. That’s when a counselor thought it would benefit the teen to build a relationship

with a mentor. Manuela, a student recruiter with HCC Northwest, and Lilly were introduced through Katy Independent School District’s KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth towards Success) mentoring program in 2008. A Bond through Mentoring Lilly and her mentor bonded over their similarities – both are Katy residents, Hispanic, shy and first in their families with aspirations to attend college. Through the KEYS program it didn’t take long for Lilly’s counselors to notice a huge improvement in her confidence and grades. Manuela is just one of 989 mentors who help nearly 1,000 students in the KEYS program. Piloted in 1995 by Katy ISD, KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. They commit to one student for one hour per week during the school day. So far, the organization has reported that 80 percent of students involved in the program have a decrease in discipline referrals and 69 percent have decreased absences and improved grades. The organization also provides scholarships to graduating seniors in the program and has awarded more than $80,000 since its inception. Lilly was a recipient of this scholarship. C

Onward to College The student recruiter turned mentor helped Lilly fill out college applications, study for tests and navigate the frustrations of high school throughout their six year relationship. With encouragement and friendship, Lilly is now a recent graduate of Mayde Creek High School with plans to attend community college in the fall. Manuela, nominated KEYS Mentor of the Year in 2013, was also motivated by her volunteering experience with the KEYS program and will pursue her Master’s in Counseling at University of Houston in fall 2014. “Being the first in my family to attend college is difficult because there aren’t many people that I can talk to about the admissions process or the many questions involved with life after high school,” said Lilly. “Manuela has been an extremely positive role model in my life because she not only helped me realize that I could go to college, but she’s also shown me that where I’m from or what I’ve been through shouldn’t stop me from making a better life for me and my family.” HCC has been involved in the Katy community for more than 30 years and has close partnerships with the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Katy Area Economic Development Council and Katy ISD, to name a few. “I am fortunate to work for HCC because they encourage me to contribute to the communities we serve,” said Manuela. “Volunteering with the KEYS program was a way to give back to someone who was like me in school. I hope that my efforts have impacted Lilly’s outcome in a positive way.” K
