Letter From The Editor-in-Chief Fall is an opportunity to celebrate the upcoming season of food and fellowship… but also a time to honor cherished causes by raising awareness. We recognize Breast Cancer Awareness through the eyes of survivor Karen Rice. And we feature the Walk Against Alzheimer’s and a proclamation by Mayor James A. Thompson and the City of Sugar Land. Another wonderful October cause is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. We had a wonderful time following the adventures of our photographer, Nikki Guest, as she traveled to New York City with two special students. As cooler weather heads our way, we’ll soon be spending time around the Thanksgiving dinner table. Our etiquette expert GiGi Lewis shares insightful tips to help kiddos freshen their manners (and a few pointers for Mom and Dad, as well). We’ll post these articles and much more on www.katychristianmagazine.com and our Facebook page. Please follow along and join the fun! A special “thank you” to our advertisers who light up each page with their family-friendly businesses. And as always, we thank YOU – our wonderful readers! May God bless you this season and throughout the months to come! Melanie Saxton Editor-in-Chief Katy Christian Magazine www.KatyChristianMagazine.com editor@katychristianmagazine.com

Katyites in Times Square! By Melanie Saxton Photography by Nikki Guest Meet Sydney Simspon and Jake Shabet of Seven Lakes High. Interestingly, their prom date blazed a trail all the way from Katy to New York City! Famous Photo Shoot Prom night 2014 was a huge event for Sydney and Jake. Sydney loved getting dressed and focused on looking like Elsa from “Frozen.” According to her mother, “They put snowflakes on her finger and toe nails at the salon, and her mint green dress had little snowflakes.” Jake also enjoyed shopping for his prom attire. “He knew he was looking super sharp the day of the dance!” says his proud mom, who called photographer Nikki Guest to capture this special milestone. The excitement, photo shoot and limo ride had the prom couple feeling like TV stars… but little did they know they would become real stars! Nikki Guest submitted their photo to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). Out of 2,000 worldwide entries, Sydney and Jake’s photo was selected with 220 other winners to kick off Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. This unique video presentation airs on the JUMBOTRON at Times Square each fall – and had

everyone booking flights for a September trip to NYC! The Big Apple Sydney and Jake hit the boardwalk on September 20th and saw themselves on the big screen. Sydney visited the largest Toys R US in the nation, and Jake was excited to see the Broadway show “Wicked.” Most importantly, they and their families participated in the Annual Flagship Buddy Walk® with their families. In 1999 NDSS introduced

the Times Square Video to bring attention to the Buddy Walk program and raise awareness of individuals with Down syndrome as they work, play and learn. Photographer Nikki Guest and her extended family also attended, including her husband, sons, mother, 85-year-old grandmother, and sister-in-law. As with every shoot, Nikki prayed that God would help her illicit natural sweet smiles and capture real moments. She was able to do just that amidst beautiful weather and enthusiastic crowds who came from all over the US to support the event. Homegrown Stars Sydney and Jake met as classmates. Sydney is 17 and graduated in June, but is back as a super senior this year. She and her parents, Brenda and Bart Simpson, moved from Canada to Katy in April 2010. Happily, Sydney’s grandmother was able to travel from Canada to see the big screen debut in NYC! Other family members include Sydney’s cat (and best friend) Blue, as well as Wickie the dog. Jake is a 17-year-old junior. His family includes parents Alex and Christina, sister Lindsay and dog Masie, plus relatives in New Jersey who were able to join Jake in New York. They created a TEAM Jake banner and wore matching hats! Jake participates in Special Olympics Texas (swimming), has a first degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, and works as an athletic trainer one class a day and on the sidelines at varsity football games. Currently he is a member of Best Buddies at Seven Lakes High, a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

A Message From the Heart Last year Sydney was a member of Best Buddies, and her Best Buddy mentioned that the best part of the day was seeing Sydney. This special friendship exemplifies what the Simpson family hopes to share with the community – that people should love and accept everyone the way they are. The Shabets hope people will understand that individuals with Down syndrome are more alike than they are different from others. “Jake is happiest when he is accepted as he is and is included with his peers,” says his mom. “He wants to be seen as just another student at Seven Lakes.” On a bigger scale, both families hope society will come to realize that individuals with Down Syndrome are capable of so much and can contribute to their communities, if only given the opportunity! Millions Mobilized in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s By Melanie Saxton This past Labor Day, a special class of caregivers did not get a day of rest. HBO’s “The Alzheimer’s Project” shares that 70 percent of people with Alzheimer’s live at home, cared for by family and friends. 10 million Americans provide 8.5 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Those stricken with the disease eventually require round-the-clock attention. Often described as “a long goodbye,” Alzheimer’s is an irreversible disease with no known cure. It erodes memory, changes personality and impairs reasoning… inside an otherwise healthy body. In general, those with Alzheimer’s live an average of 8 to 10 years after diagnosis, although that number varies from three to 20 years. “It’s not uncommon for the caregiver to die before the patient,” says Bill Couturié, who directed the HBO project. The Facts The Alzheimer’s Association website shares statistics that may seem overwhelming. An estimated 5.4 million Americans live with the disease – a number that may triple by 2050 according to researchers. In Texas, 340,000 are living with Alzheimer’s, a number that may increase to 400,000 by 2020. One in eight people aged 65 and older have Al-

zheimer’s, as do nearly half of people aged 85 and older (43 percent). This disease demands our attention. “We must make the fight against Alzheimer’s a global priority. It’s up to every one of us to learn more about the disease and join the fight,” says Marisa Ramon, Outreach Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association, Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter.

October 18: Making a Difference Beyond the daunting facts, there is hope. Every year, people walk to support Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This “walk for a cure” is a memorial for loved ones who have died. It honors those living with the disease. Some walk to recognize a selfless caregiver. In short, every footstep has personal significance. The Fort Bend Walk to End Alzheimer’s kicks off with registration at 8 a.m. on October 18 at Constellation Field. Each year over 700 walkers form teams with family, friends, coworkers, neighborhood groups, and churches. This “family friendly, elder friendly, stroller friendly, dog friendly” event raises funds and awareness.

The Mayor’s Proclamation On August 26th, Mayor James A. Thompson and the City of Sugar Land issued a proclamation in support of the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Walkers from Sugar Land, Katy, Cy-Fair and the greater Houston area join hundreds of cities across the globe in raising awareness for Alzheimer’s disease while encouraging citizens to get active in the ongoing battle against its rise. Walk to End Alzheimer’s committee volunteers Helen Curd and Kerry Dannecker (pictured with Mayor Thompson) were on hand to receive the proclamation on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association, Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter. How to Get Involved Visit www.alztex.org/walk for additional information on how to register for the Walk or make a donation. You can also contact Jennifer Giambi at jgiambi@alz.org or 713-314-1319 for more details. The Alzheimer’s Association is the center for help and hope. Passion for Humanity By Summer Hoover It’s a horrible topic (nearly unthinkable), but the fact is that human slavery still exists. In fact, there are more slaves today in the world than there have been at any other point in history. The number is estimated to exceed 28 million, and roughly half of those are children. You might think that this atrocity only occurs on the other side of the world, but an estimated 14,500 to 17,500 adults and children are trafficked into the United States every year. Major port cities take on the brunt of this horrific industry, and Houston is no exception. In fact, Houston is the number one trafficking hub in the nation. Evil Among Us If you’re unfamiliar with the term, human trafficking is the buying and selling of a person for forced labor, commonly leading to sexual exploitation. It is an evil that doesn’t discriminate based upon age, gender, race, or religion and can rob the life of anyone. Victims are literally bought and sold as sex objects to be abused by multiple men and women each day. Neighborhoods, nail salons and massage parlors are often fronts for brothels that can be found even in the nicest suburbs.

According to freeourcity.org, there are “approximately 200 active brothels in Houston” and “Houston is home to more strip clubs and illicit spas than Las Vegas.” Christians Stepping In Chilling, isn’t it? But the bottom line is, Christians are among the

greatest enemies of human traffickers because we care so deeply and feel compelled to take action. A host of organizations and volunteers are fighting against human trafficking in and around our cities. Victims are being rescued. Lives are being changed. Awareness is a key factor in diminishing and hopefully eradicating human trafficking. Once healed from the abuse, many former victims are able to once again have normal lives.

Resources Proceeds from Just Ride help support Redeemed Ministries and Restore Her, two non-profits that provide direct aftercare support for victims of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation in the greater Houston area. Many in the community have already donated their time and energy into making this event possible, including ten churches and fifteen private businesses. An Awakening By Karen Rice When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I reacted like most who receive this diagnosis. The first thing came to mind was a “death sentence.” I found out, however, that it was truly an “awakening” for me. Gaining Perspective I asked God, “Why would you do this to me? What have I done in life that was so bad to have this placed upon me?” But then I decided to seek out the positive. There had to be a reason for it all. I was about to face a new beginning and find new hope. I thought about the “gift of life” and knew I would develop strength from this experience. I would do and see more with a whole new perspective. Struck by Lightning Twice? I wasn’t happy with the way I looked after surgery, nor did I like the neuropathic pain I endured each day. But I decided to snap out of it. I had to snap out of it again after being diagnosed with another cancer (colon) a few years later. It took me by surprise, sort of like being struck by lightning twice. What were the odds of battling two different cancers in one body? I even made jokes, like “What am I, the cancer carrier?” I cried inside and sought, once again, the positive side of an illness.

And so the bottom line is this: There are individuals who are no longer among us… and I still have my life. Who am I to complain? Even with all the struggles, I still feel truly blessed. Putting Words to Experience I believe when you survive a disease as horrible as cancer, it’s for a reason – perhaps to share, encourage others, or just lead by example. For me, it is writing. One day during a surgery, I experienced something of a miracle – as if I went to the other side. Compelled to write it down, I turned that experience into a poem called “Peace.” I never

they can develop the strength to embrace life in a whole new way. That’s what I’m all about now, inspiration through words. Living Proof My life is a testimony that you can survive cancer not once, but twice, providing you catch it in time, have faith and allow that faith to direct your path. I’m not saying all will be easy, for I’ve had my moments from the beginning. But remember, there is always a purpose. Had I not gone through it, I would have never produced inspirational words to bless others. By the way, my breast cancer wasn’t found by a mammogram. It was detected by an ultrasound. Either way, you must be tested, and no matter the outcome… be strong, deal with it, and believe. About Karen Rice

As a biology professor at Houston Community College Northwest, she was named Teacher of the Year by the Houston West Chamber of Commerce. Several businesses and organizations honored her at the 24th Annual Teacher of the Year & Business Partnership Awards Luncheon, including Carmelo Mauro and wife Hilary Mauro of Carmelo’s Ristorante Italiano, Houston West Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Jeannie Bollinger, and CEO Keith Alexander of Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. Dr. O’Neil was recognized in the post-secondary category for her STEM-focused work covering science, technology, engineering and math. She spends time inside and outside the classroom challenging students to not merely memorize facts, but conceptualize scientific processes and gain valuable laboratory skills. In addition to developing critical thinking skills, she reminds students of the growing national need for graduates with STEM-focused educations. “My primary objective as an instructor is to provide students a high-quality science education in a safe and compassionate environment where they can strive to achieve their goals.” says Dr. O’Neil, who has been with HCC 13 years, She established the Northwest

Critters in Katy: The Great American Smokeout By Paige Holsapple If you are a smoker, November 20 is a great time to quit. Thousands will give up cigarettes for 24 hours during the Great American Smokeout. By quitting permanently, we increase the chances of living a long, healthy life. And since secondhand smoke doesn’t discriminate between humans and animals, quitting benefits everyone in a household. Secondhand Smoke and Pets According to cancer.org, about one in five U.S. adults smoke cigarettes (more than 43 million people). And nearly 16 million people smoke tobacco in cigars or pipes, which also cause cancers. This means plenty of pets are at risk. ASPCA.org is a great resource and strongly urges pet parents to designate their homes as smoke-free areas. They cite a recent study by the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, which underscores the link between secondhand smoke and cancer in pets. According to the study, secondhand smoke can cause lung and nasal cancer in dogs, malignant lymphoma in cats and allergy and respiratory problems in both animals. The study also finds the following: Cats are particularly susceptible to tobacco smoke, and that repeated exposure to secondhand

smoke doubled a cat’s chances of getting cancer. Living with a smoker for more than five years increased the risk four times. Lymphoma is one of the leading causes of feline death. If you are a pet parent who smokes, be on the lookout for the symptoms of cancer, including coughing, trouble eating or breathing, drooling, weight loss, vomiting, nasal discharge, bleeding, and sneezing. Smokeout is an opportunity to kick the habit for good – for yourself, your family and your furry friends. Smoking rates among adults and youth have been cut in half since 1964 when the first “Report on Smoking and Health” came out 50 years ago. The 50th Anniversary Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health is posted at www. surgeongeneral.gov/initiatives/tobacco/. GiGi’s Top 10s for Graceful Living By GiGi Lewis www.clubetiquette.com Come Lord Jesus, be our guest. Let this food to us be blessed. Amen. With Thanksgiving fast approaching, now is a great time to brush up on holiday etiquette. My Top 10 Tips will get your started! 1. Have your children participate. Let them plan the Thanksgiving holiday and help decorate, set the table, and shop for food. 2. Hosting 101: The secret to entertaining with ease is to plan, plan, plan… and anticipate, anticipate, anticipate! From the menu to sprucing up your front lawn, a guest truly feels special when they notice that you made a special effort for them. Count out your place settings and pull them out in advance. Prep ahead of time so that you can relax and enjoy your guests. As the old saying goes, “Guests want a hostess, not a ghostess.” 3. Good Guest Basics: If you are invited to someone’s Thanksgiving dinner, R.S.V.P. in a timely manner with a head count. Don’t ask to invite someone else. Clue your children in on basic

table manners and tell them not to explore the host’s home (including the refrigerator) without permission. 4. Basic dining manners: Common mistakes are putting a used utensil back on the table instead of on the plate, picking up any item that has fallen to the floor, and using fingers instead of a knife or piece of bread to get your food onto a fork. Children should keep a napkin on their lap throughout the meal. 5. Role-play: Make manners fun by anticipating your child’s challenges and making a little game of it. For example, many

6. Hostess gifts: A gift can be as simple as holiday napkins. Two main things to ask yourself when selecting a hostess gift are: 1.) Food is not a hostess gift. And remember that your super duper family recipe is inappropriate here, unless preplanned by you and the hostess. 2.) Is the gift something that they would really use? 7. Sit down dinners: Wait for the host or hostess to take the first bite. You don’t want to be nibbling when everyone else’s heads are bowed to say a blessing. 8. Taste a bit of everything: Etiquette books state that it is fine to refuse certain foods at the table. But the common practice here in the south is to try a little of everything. Encourage your child not to say, “Ewww, I don’t like this.” Establish how they should handle foods they dislike before attending the event. 9. Offer to help: As a guest, remember to help clean after the meal.

children feel awkward when being introduced to new people. If your children are young enough, have them practice introductions with a teddy bear, then graduate to practicing with you. This can take five minutes. Encourage them to ask at least one question to begin a conversation. Teach them appropriate and inappropriate questions.

10. Thanksgiving is a time of thankfulness: Remember to verbally thank all participants, including your own family members. Then write a family thank you note afterwards for the hosts. Optional: Slip in a snapshot of the day. If you want to know more about how to write a powerful thank you note, contact me at etiquettechick@gmail.com. From my home to yours, have a blessed and safe holiday season.

Positively Pink! By Ann Baker In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Methodist West Hospital is hosting the second annual Positively Pink event on Saturday, October 18, 2014, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The free, family-fun event is open to all members of the community to raise funds to benefit local cancer patients with non-medical assistance where needed, as well as providing education on breast cancer. The Statistics The reality is, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. The diagnosis is daunting, both medically and financially, which is why resources are so important. “We believe in this cause and are very excited about the information we’ll be sharing at this year’s Positively Pink,” said Dr. Correna Terrell, radiologist and medical director of Houston Methodist’s breast care center. “Improving the health of our community begins with education about reducing risk and discussing, at a personal level with women, why screening mammograms are important. We also want to inform our community about the comprehensive cancer resources, from prevention and screening to treatment and support, available here on campus.” Attendees will have the opportunity to visit with the hospital’s

breast cancer physician team and other primary care physicians dedicated to women’s health. Women can also sign up for their annual mammogram.

Gracelets: Wear Your Bible! By Melanie Saxton Meet bracelet designer Kara Johnson. Her “Gracelets” are an out-pouring of love for God and a way to help others come to know undeserved, unfailing and unending grace. “This jewelry enables you to “wear your Bible!” she explains. Hope and Healing Kara’s story is less about her and more redemption, healing and the plans God has for us all. Her New England childhood was spent in a broken home. She never attended church. Through her troubled teen years she sensed something was “missing” that nothing else seemed to fulfill. She jokes that the Lord brought her to Houston in 1999 for a job in the middle of the Bible Belt to get her attention. She started attending church because it seemed to be the right thing to do as a new wife and mother. Up until that point she tried to fill in the holes and heal from such a tragic childhood. In 2001, she met and fell head in heals in love with Jesus. That’s when the true healing and redemption began. He began to patch the holes and Kara overflowed! She wanted to share her newfound faith with her friends, family, neighbors, mailman, Starbucks barista and the lady at the drive-thru window.

When her enthusiasm seemed to be a bit overwhelming to others, she realized that actions often speak louder than words. That’s how the concept “wearing the Bible” came about. Growing Gracelets Kara first experimented with jewelry design in 2001 by twisting crosses out of wire. She once saw a bracelet that told the story of Jesus using beads as symbols, and it opened vast new possibilities for sharing concepts of love, healing, redemption, grace and truth. For instance, the Hope Gracelet pours through multiple scriptures as a devotional tool and daily reminder to keep our hope in the Lord. According to Kara, “My bracelet themes are created as life events touch my heart. The Hope Bracelet was created during a time of great struggle and desire to hold onto the hope and peace that only God could offer me.” Kara hand strings each with genuine crystal quartz, mother of pearl, freshwater pearl, cat’s eyes beads with an antiqued gold adjustable clasp to fit all hearts and wrist sizes. Other styles include Mother’s Prayer, Story of Creation, Daily Devotional, Wall of Heaven, and a special Purity Gracelet. A Woman of Action Kara learned about human trafficking in 2010 and was heartbroken. “Houston is the capital,” she says. Many ignore the dark and evil atrocity, but Kara trained with Home of Hope and Chrysalis

says. She created a Purity Gracelet to declare a woman’s worth and value. Kara wanted to breathe this concept into girls. “Studies show girls who have pledged purity with a ceremony of its significance and who are supported by others in doing so are more likely to keep that pledge,” she says. “THAT is the beginning of healing in this sexsaturated, instant-gratification and tolerant culture.” Girls can make the pledge with or without a bracelet from her website. “I’m praying for 100 girls to take this challenge — to be a light and shine like stars among their generation!” Kara encourages girls to share stories after taking the pledge. Mentoring to help trafficked and at-risk girls. Through mentoring she learned what the phrase “God uses all things for good” really means. “I was able to relate to the brokenness in these girls and the deep emptiness and need for healing. AND I HAVE A CURE!” she

Pastor Profile: Pastor Jorge H. Cardenas By Christina Dodson Church on the Rock was planted in Katy during the fall of 1998 with a prayer group of about 25 people. Approximately 200 attended the first service, and the excitement has grown ever since! Led by Pastor Jorge H. Cardenas for the last 16 years, the congregation experiences a Christ Center message from the pulpit, a powerful Sunday school curriculum, an awesome worship experience and dedicated teachers involved with the children’s church. A Global Body of Christ This multinational congregation includes people from around the world who are encouraged to love God and country, and also to make a difference in their respective communities. “In 2008, we completed our worship center and now have services in English, Spanish, and Portuguese,” say Pastor Cardenas. The church offers programs for the whole family, as well as activities such as music, soccer, roller hockey, art and many other children’s after school programs. There is also a strong counseling program for couples and single parents. For those interested in serving, there is something for everyone: Praise, Grandparents, Cafeteria, Counseling, Ladies, Decoration, Evangelism, Nursery, Theological Institute, Youth Group, Book Store, Prayer, Couples, Reception, Singles, Ushers and Dance.

Answering the Call After surrendering his life to the Lord at the age of 12, Pastor Cardenas married his sweetheart Olivia and moved with their first son to Houston in 1979. In 1985, after his wife gave birth to their twin daughters, he began seeking the will of God in his life and joined Church on the Rock. He was ordained in 1988 and says, “The Holy Spirit spoke to my heart about ministry and I answered the call with the full support of my dear wife and children.” He has served in many ministries: administrator, missions, youth

Christiana Olivia, and Amelie. Present and Future The church looks forward to completing 28000 square feet of space for education and plans to open a preschool this fall. The vision for Church on the Rock is founded on Matthew 7:25 — that every household will be established on the Rock who is Christ. “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house: and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Those seeking a church home are invited to check out the website at www.rocakaty.com for the full calendar and worship times. Worship services are held at 433 South Barker Cypress, with Spanish services at Redeemer Community Church at 24201 Cinco Ranch Blvd. A 24-hour-a-day prayer line can be reached at 281-5999777, or people can call 1-800-855-529-4510.

As I See It: Zerwas Talks Budget and Healthcare The 2014 - 2015 budget is $200.4 billion with Health and Human Services at 36% ($73.8 billion) and Education at 37%. “Medicaid expenditures make up much of that $73 billion and account for about 23% of our state’s General Revenue spending,” he adds, noting the historical belief that our state’s health care expenditures should not exceed education spending. Mental Health is one area receiving a great deal of attention. “In the past, most mental health care took place in our county jails, probably the worst place to treat mental illness,” says Zerwas. “This is a major cost driver in our budget. When treatment is not effective or accessible, we see the effects outside of the Health and Human Services arena in our public safety, criminal justice and court systems.” For this reason the 83rd Legislature expanded spending to help eliminate waiting lists in local mental health authorities and train school-based professionals on prevention

By Gary Gillen Citizens of north Fort Bend County are fortunate to have a State Representative who holds a distinct position in the legislature. Dr. John Zerwas is a Republican leader in the House of Representatives serving on the powerful Appropriations Committee. He chairs the Health and Human Services Subcommittee and the General Investigating and Ethics Committee, and serves on the House Health and Human Services Committee. Zerwas, 59, was first elected in 2006 and has served four terms. He is a candidate for reelection in November and agreed to sit down with Katy Christian Magazine to discuss issues of real importance to citizens of District 28. Texas government operates under a two-year budget cycle. “State Agencies are already under a mandate to reduce costs and waste through a reduction of ten percent of operating budgets,” he says. The House Appropriations Committee and its subcommittees have held several hearings during the last several weeks in preparation for the next session.

and early identification. In addition, the establishment of collaborative public/private partnerships will help create whole, wrap-around community endeavors targeting homelessness, behavioral health, and specific families at risk of entering the child protective services system including substance abuse slots and psychiatric bed slots for children. Women’s Health is also a concern. Zerwas explains that there are six million women of childbearing age in Texas today. In 2012 only 71% of women aged 18-64 had health insurance coverage. “More than 60% of Texas births are paid by Medicaid, and more than two thirds of our Medicaid costs for newborns are related to prematurity,” he says. “Medical costs for a child’s first year are dramatically different if the child is pre-term.” While average medical costs for a full term child are under $500, the cost for preterm babies after leaving the hospital could easily exceed $50,000. For this reason, the legislature budgeted an additional $100 million for primary health care. Health and Human Services agencies are working to coordinate the delivery of women’s health services in Texas. Being a physician – one of three in the house at a time when the health and human service budget is fast growing – Zerwas is sought out by legislators when health care is debated. His grasp of issues, not just the medical area of which he is clearly an expert, but of the funding and delivery mechanisms of state and federal government, is astounding. Through his position on the Appropriations Committee

he speaks with expertise on funding across the entire state government from Agriculture to Space Sciences. Katy is fortunate to have a capable and hardworking Representative in Austin. Zerwas’ growing prominence will certainly influence state government and benefit his constituents. Visit his website at johnzerwas.com. Gary Gillen owns and operates Gillen Pest Control and Gillen Political Strategies in Richmond. He is the only person in history to have served on both the Richmond City Commission and Rosenberg City Council. He was also the Chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend County 2006-2007.

Classification: 8th Grade Cornerstone Christian Academy

Daniel is president of the FWA Chapter of the National Honor Society, member of PALs (an organization that mentors fellow students), captain and middle linebacker for the football team, left fielder for the baseball team, core member of the wrestling team, and a member of the National Society for High School Scholars. Daniel was one of 21 boys in the Katy area that were selected to attend The American Legion Boys State program this past summer. Daniel recently saw Lone Survivor with his father — a viewing that became one of those special father-son moments. His father served in Dessert Storm and several tours in Afghanistan, and was in Somalia (1993) when he lost friends in what would later become a book, then a movie; Black Hawk Down. His father never talked to Daniel about his involvement, but somehow this movie drew him closer to his father’s experiences. Daniel has had a goal for the last ten years to become an officer in the Army or Navy. His dream has been to attend West Point, followed by Army Ranger School and to specialize in the dismantling of bombs.

Gifted creative writer Leah Marut finished 3rd place in a state wide writing contest through the Texas Christian School Interscholastic Tournament. Korean War Veteran Rings the Bell! By Holly Chervnsik While October is a month in which we spread breast cancer awareness, we recently learned of Tom Stewart, an 84-year-old who battled another type of cancer. Exactly one year ago this Sugar Land resident was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “There was disbelief,” Stewart says of the diagnosis. “While colon cancer claimed loved ones on both sides of my family, I wasn’t aware of any with prostate cancer.” He chose MD Anderson in Sugar Land for radiation treatment and was advised by his doctors to avoid stress and worry… if possible. Once he accepted the diagnosis as real, he turned it over to God. “He took good care of me when I was a green horn 2nd Lieutenant on the 38th parallel during the Korean War,” says Stewart. Regardless of outcome, he knew God was still in charge and would handle it. Thankfully, Stewart’s family members are Christians and gave him total support while maintaining positive attitudes. As a deacon at Sugar Creek Baptist, he also relied on his church family for prayer and emotional support. Today he shares his experience through testimonials and

in one-on-one conversations. “I always stress the need to have your PSA checked ROUTINELY by your doctor,” he adds. Stewart’s faith never wavered, and neither did his routine. As much as possible he continued to bowl, golf, ride his bike and work out throughout his treatment. As a way to count down to survivorship, Stewart

collected his coffee cups from each appointment and marked each with the number of remaining treatments from 39 down to one. He brought he whole stack to his final treatment at the end of July 2014 and was able to ring the ceremonial bell to celebrate being cancer free! But his inspirational journey isn’t over, not by a long shot. In fact, post-cancer, Stewart shows no sign of slowing down. Last month (September) he competed once again in the 26-mile “Pineywoods Purgatory” – a premier cycling event featuring rides ranging from 25 to 102 miles. Stewart has now participated over the past 16 years with his family in the hills above Lufkin (his hometown). While it gets a little tougher each year, he believes there is nothing more important than maintaining a healthy lifestyle and continuing to challenge himself. He attributes the success of his treatments to MD Anderson, from his oncologist Dr. Shalin Shah to his medical team to his fellow patients who became fast friends. We are so happy to report the good news of Stewart’s treatment and his journey of faith. May we all be as brave and proactive in the face of a cancer diagnosis!

Dear Doctor: Flu Shots By Dr. Chau Tran Frequently patients have questions about the flu, including flu symptoms, prevention and flu vaccination. Below I address these questions. Q: What is the flu? A: The flu, also called influenza, is a viral infection in the nose, throat and lungs. Q: What are the symptoms of the flu? A: The flu may cause fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite, and tiredness. Cold symptoms are generally milder than flu symptoms. Some people describe the flu as the worst cold of their life. Q: What should I do if I get the flu? A: It is recommended that you stay home and get plenty of rest; drinking lots of fluids will prevent dehydration. You can use overthe-counter medications like Tylenol/Ibuprofen for fever and pain, cough suppressants/expectorants for relieving coughs, and decongestants for runny nose. Most people usually feel better after one or two weeks, but for certain individuals, like babies, the elderly, and people with chronic medical problems, the flu can lead to serious,

life-threatening diseases, such as pneumonia. Q: What can I do to prevent from getting the flu? A: 1. Take care of yourself by getting plenty of sleep, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy diet. 2. Wash your hands often. 3. Get a flu shot, which is recommended for all people ages 6 months and older.

Q: What is the flu vaccine? A: There are two delivery methods of flu vaccines, injection and nasal spray. An injection contains dead viruses, while the nasal spray contains live but weakened viruses. The vaccines work by exposing your body to said viruses, allowing your body time to produce antibodies. Should you become exposed to a “live” virus, your body is ready with its new defenses. Q: Can I catch the flu from the flu vaccine? A: You cannot get the flu from the injection because the viruses are dead. The nasal spray contains live but weakened viruses thus it would not cause an infection.

Q: Can I still get the flu if I got vaccinated? A: Since there are various flu viruses, it is possible to get the flu after vaccination. However, flu symptoms would be milder than if you did not get vaccinated. Dr. Chau Tran is a Family Medicine Physician for the UT Health Science Center at Houston. To receive your $15 flu shot, contact the UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch clinic located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494, 713-4865300.

It’s All In Your Head Women should feel healthy, vibrant and strong throughout their adult lives. If you've been told, “it's all in your head” or “learn to live with it,” read on.

Maggie's story Maggie came to Hotze Health & Wellness Center after suffering for seven years from depression and fatigue, which developed after giving birth to her second child. She also had a lifelong history of cold hands and feet and sensitivity to cold. She was experiencing significant hair loss, was constipated and had severe muscle aches. Even after sleep, Maggie never felt rested.

Maggie's treatment

Maggie had experienced recurrent sinus infections and headaches over the past seven years, for which she had taken antibiotics. She also complained of recurrent abdominal cramping and bloating associated with the ingestion of sugar and bread products, which she craved. Since her last pregnancy, Maggie's menstrual cycles had been irregular. She had gained 30 pounds over the past seven years and had difficulty losing weight. She had lost all sexual desire, and felt that she was in a “brain fog.”

Maggie's name could easily be erased from her chart and replaced with the names of thousands of other women in midlife whom we have evaluated. Maggie's doctor made her feel that she was a hypochondriac and emotionally inadequate. We explained to her that her symptoms were very common to women in her age group and were easily treated.

Maggie had sought the care of numerous physicians. They told her that she was “depressed” and prescribed antidepressants. A friend of hers, who was a patient at Hotze Health & Wellness Center, told her that there was a natural alternative treatment for her problems, so Maggie came to us for an evaluation.

She had an imbalance in her female hormones that adversely affected her body's ability to use thyroid hormones. It was the change in her hormones that triggered her allergy disorder, which in turn led to recurrent sinus infections. The antibiotics that she had taken for her infections also killed normal bacteria in her body and allowed yeast problems to occur.

If you are like Maggie and you want to get your life back, then contact us today at

Maggie was prescribed natural bioidentical hormones, natural thyroid supplementation, and was treated for allergies with sublingual immunizing drops given under the tongue daily. Within two months, Maggie's depression and fatigue had disappeared. She was able to discontinue her antidepressants. She told us, “I have not felt this good in years. Thank you for giving me my life back!” October / November 2014

The Therapy Dogs of Houston Hospice By Karla Goolsby Don’t be surprised if you spot a wagging tail and hear the patter of paws trotting along hallways of Houston Hospice. There are furry volunteers afoot in a place that emphasizes life – even the last precious remnants of life. In the midst of the largest medical center in the world, this 1920s estate welcomes patients, families and volunteers from Fort Bend, Harris, Waller, Wharton, Montgomery, Matagorda, Austin, Colorado, Brazoria and Jackson counties. A “Tail” of Love 10 years ago the pet therapy program began with volunteer Ann James and her docile Golden Retriever, Chrissy. When Chrissy laid her head in an elderly neighbor’s lap, Ann realized her dog was a natural therapy pet. She found a certification program through Faithful Paws, a ministry of Bellaire United Methodist Church, and recruited friend and fellow Golden Retriever owner Lynn Hoster. After training and certification, Chrissy and Lynn’s dog Dixie inspired more dogs to join in. The Importance of Comfort I shadowed Chris Chisholm and Jazz, her rescued Cavalier King Charles Spaniel this past June. Chris said, ““I’m so glad you’re writing

this story!” The volunteer training at Houston Hospice alleviated her own fear of death, and she has a new understanding of the importance of comfort. Judy Anderson and Casey, her Bichon Frise, were also in attendance. Judy said, “Sometimes patients are unresponsive, but their families are helped. The visits bring them happiness at a very stressful time.” As we walked the halls, every soul flashed broad, unabashed smiles at the dogs — the kind that spring from real joy.

Amazing Responses Next I trailed along with Loretta Uzick and her well dressed Yorkshire Terriers, Cricket and Skyler. Cricket has volunteered one year and Skyler is a puppy in training. Loretta loves meeting new people and has the gift of gab. But more important is the gift of listening, which she learned through volunteer training classes. “The dogs get me in the door, and sometimes families and patients will open up and talk,” she explains. As I walked through the inpatient unit, family and friends of patients stopped Loretta constantly. A woman from San Francisco who was visiting her brother showed us her iPhone filled with photos of with Jazz snuggled next to her brother’s legs.

Instinctive Compassion On their very first visit, Chris and Judy entered the room of a fiveyear-old who had been unresponsive all day. Chris asked the mother if she could place Jazz on the little girl’s bed. Jazz began licking the girl’s hand… and the hand moved. Then Jazz began licking the little girl’s face. The child opened her eyes and her mother asked, “Do you like the dog honey? Isn’t he pretty?” The little girl responded! When it was time to leave, the mother followed Jazz into the hall and walked sobbing into Chris’s open arms. The child died that night. Because Jazz instinctively knew what to do, the mother had a few more precious moments with her little girl.

Volunteers at the Heart of Hospice My final ‘walk along’ was with Cassie Chiaro and her Yorkie Vala, and Brenda Chan and Andie, her Gold Retriever mix. Cassie and Brenda met during Houston Hospice volunteer training, hit it off, and became partners. Together with their dogs, they visit almost every week. As we neared the exit, we paused at a bench where Mindy Fleisches and her teenage son were resting after hours of being at their loved one’s bedside. When they looked up wearily, Cassie and Brenda invited them to pet the dogs. Michael lifted Vala to his face and asked if he could keep her. Mindy stroked Andie’s soft golden fur and said, “Thank you. I feel better.” This perfect moment illustrates the purpose of Houston Hospice therapy dogs and their owners. Creating Good Readers By Ellie Franz For most people, learning to read doesn’t start with comprehension. It doesn’t even begin with the ability to memorize words or recognize letters. Learning to read actually starts with sound. A Four-Step Process There are four steps that lay the solid foundation that enables children and adults to read fluently and easily. These steps—accomplished in the right order—can mean the difference between someone who enjoys reading, and someone who has a life-long struggle with the written word. Here is the four-step process that leads to a lifetime of happy reading: 1. Awareness of Sounds: Being able to hear and distinguish different sounds is where it all starts. Learning how to distinguish sounds—for example, the three distinct sounds in the word “hat” (/h /, /a / and / t/)—is the first skill in a series of skills that enables successful reading. 2. Blending and Coding of Sounds: Once sounds are distinguished, learning to blend them together is critical. So is coding, which is the process of assigning written symbols to the individual and blended sounds.

distinguishing, blending and coding of sounds these skills become automatic. This step is necessary if reading speed and fluency are to be attained. 4. Comprehension: Finally, comprehending the concepts, information and stories represented by all these sounds and codes is the reason we learn to read to begin with! One of the ways we develop skills of comprehension is by answering questions about what we’ve just read, engaging in conversation about the concepts, or even writing about what we’ve just learned.

3. Automatic Recognition: Through the process of practicing the LearningRx identified the cause of her learning struggles One-on-one training built the strong skills she needs to succeed in school Now, she’s independent, loves school, and has goals and dreams for the future

Why Brain Training Works So, what’s at the root of reading struggles? The single cognitive skill critical to reading is called “auditory processing.” It is so foundational that, according to the Department of Education, weakness in this single skill account for 88% of all reading problems. In other words, nearly 9 out of 10 kids and adults who struggle to read do so for the exact same reason! Auditory processing is one of the core skills that LearningRx brain training targets and strengthens. Please visit learningrx.com/cinco-ranch to read the testimonials of families who have experienced the life-changing results. Connect! The LearningRx Cinco Ranch Brain Training Center is located at 24124 Cinco Village Center Blvd., #200 in Katy. Call 281-394-5533 to speak to a brain training professional.
