Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! The election is behind us and winter is upon us, bringing with it the ancient and everlasting story of Jesus’ birth. I love this time of year. Cooler weather and a strong sense of family (and good food) will surely usher in new memories and milestones. How blessed we are that Jesus puts the “holy” in our holidays. We can also look to the prospect of a brand new year. It will be interesting to see what God has in store for us. As our future unfolds, we can remember, This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it! Truly, we have much to rejoice in, for we have each other — a strong, supportive community of believers and Christian businesses who care about “the reason for the season.” I hope you enjoy our December/January edition. We interviewed Todd Burpo, author of Heaven is for Real. What a treat that was! Another interesting interview involves Peter Ramsey, the director of the new motion picture, The Rise of the Guardians. This family-friendly film has been released in time for the holidays.

Christmas Giving By Rev. Robert A. Crutchfield Ever year around this time there are those lucky enough to receive a big bonus. There are others who find themselves in need of an additional tax deduction at the end of the year. Either way, in this season of giving people’s minds may turn to gift giving that will have a positive impact beyond their own communities. If you are lucky enough to find yourself in this situation, I have some ideas for you. World Vision (donate.worldvision.org): This worldwide Christian humanitarian organization offers a whole catalog of ideas for giving. Examples include clean water in areas that have none, animals which can provide food, income or transportation in underdeveloped parts of the world, or emergency aid in areas struck by natural disaster. They have gifts from $25 to as much as you can prayerfully spare. Angel Tree (http://www.prisonfellowship.org/programs/angel-tree/): A ministry of Prison Fellowship, Angel Tree provides Christmas presents to children of people behind bars in order to remind them that God loves them in spite of what their parents did. Angel Tree exists in part as a way to help keep criminal behavior from continuing from one generation of a family to the next. Angel Tree is an

option both for individual Christians and entire congregations. Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF.org): Mission Aviation Fellowship is a Christian organization that provides planes and pilots to parts of the world that would otherwise be unreachable. A gift to MAF is a way to help spread the Gospel to remote places that are woefully underserved. Last year they transported 98,610 passengers (mostly pastors and missionaries) and delivered 8.16 million pounds of cargo to hard-to-reach areas around the world. They offer gift opportunities from as little as five dollars. There has never been a better Christmas to consider giving beyond your own family or community. The need is great everywhere we look. I hope these ideas will help as you prayerfully consider your year end giving. Rev. Robert A. Crutchfield is pastor of Compassion Church of Katy and Editor of the blog Faith That Inspires Action (http://faithinspires.wordpress.com) which has been read in over 141 different countries.

Heaven is for Real: A Conversation with Todd Burpo By Ruth Towns

USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly, National Public Radio, and the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, as well as lists in Canada and Portugal. The Burpos have made countless television appearances, the most recent of which were the Katie Couric Show, NBC Today’s Show, and The Barbara Walter’s Special.

Nearly ten years ago on March of 2003, a four-yearold boy suffered a burst appendix and nearly died due to a life-threatening infection. For his parents, it was a living nightmare. Emergency surgery was Colton’s only option. He barely survived, but lived to share his remarkable journey from unconsciousness to heaven.

“It has been incredible to watch the contagious enthusiasm of readers drive the success of Heaven is for Real,” said Michael Hyatt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Thomas Nelson Publishers. “Colton’s story gives a wonderful glimpse into what lies ahead for believers, and encourages us to embrace our childlike faith.”

The result is Heaven is for Real, the miraculous account of the Burpo family. Several months into recovery, Colton began talking about his experiences. He described the people he met in heaven, including a great grandfather who died 30 years earlier, a sister who was lost through a miscarriage, and Jesus, Himself. Glimpsing into heaven through the eyes of their young son was startling for Todd and Sonja Burpo. The family didn’t know what to believe, but soon the evidence was clear.

Todd Burpo is the pastor of Crossroads Wesleyan in Imperial, NE and a volunteer fireman. His wife Sonja is a children’s minister,

Though skeptical at first, they came to realize that more occurred during surgery than was ever expected. Colton began to accurately describe his parents praying for him in separate rooms at the hospital. It was at the hospital that the angels sang to him, and he described them, as well. New York Times best-selling author Lynn Vincent collaborated with Todd to chronicle Colton’s story. Since its release in November of 2010, over seven million books have been printed and it reached the top position on many domestic best seller lists — New York Times, Be prepared for “Mother Nature” this summer. busy pastor’s wife, and mom. Colton, now an active twelve-year-old, has an older sister Cassie and a younger brother Colby. Todd recently spoke at a Faith West Academy sponsored evening at the Berry Center Arena. Katy Christian Magazine was honored to interview him, as follows: KCM: What inspired you to share Colton’s story with the world? Todd Burpo: Several things happened before we ever considered sharing Colton’s story. His surgery occurred several years before the book came out. When you officiate funerals, live in small town and have a four-year-old who talks about his experience, well, honestly, complete strangers came to our door saying, “God told me you need to write a book.”

she said, “We’ll go with the 12-year-old.” KCM: How has Colton’s revelation affected you personally? TB: So much of the book speaks to men. So many men have questions, doubts and fears. Colton met my granddad in heaven, who was killed in car wreck two days after giving his life to Christ. My mom didn’t know about this and spent 28 years worrying about his soul . . . that is, until Colton saw him in heaven. This impacted me deeply. I’m a wrestling coach, too, and not a soft-serve kind of Christian. This book gives all men a lot to think about. The message is, we all need to be upfront with our families. Some men pass on that, and I hope that the book helps them love their families enough to have that kind of open talk. The peace is incredible for everyone.

KCM: How did the writing come together?

KCM: What is it about Colton’s story that touches readers so profoundly?

TB: After many years, God impressed upon me the importance of Colton’s story. You might say God brought the publishing world to me. My agent called me before I ever called anyone else. I was an unwilling partner and agreed to write the book to get it off my back.

TB: For a Christian audience, Heaven is for Real is so impacting because of the raw innocence of a child. When you read it, you know the kid wasn’t influenced by adults. After all, you don’t teach your child “what heaven looks like” at three years and 10 months.

KCM: How has life changed for your family since you went public?

KCM: It appears to be a book without borders. Have you received feedback from outside the United States?

TB: The book took off and suddenly we were in the media. A year ago, ABC Nightly news put Colton up against Stephen Hawking. Dianne Sawyer said, “Who are you going to believe, the scientist or the child?” I thought this was a profound question and loved it when

TB: We had very scary time as we were about to lose our son, and that’s something any parent can relate to. It’s what Colton said afterwards that amazed me and many others, as well. I was on airplane

from Atlanta to Denver, and a lady stared at me. She leaned over and said, “Did you write a book?” I responded, “Yes, did you like it?” She said, “I’m Palestinian, and I took the book back to Palestine. For the first time we talked about God and no one got in a fight.” It was a blessing that she shared that. Heaven is for Real has 37 translations and is going around the world to China, Russia, Africa, and as a matter of fact, someone from Norway mentioned they read it. It makes me think about Europe. The Christian population in Europe is so small, but a testimony from an innocent kid is making headway. KCM: What lessons does the book teach? TB: A mother told me once, “i had an abortion.” This was a mother who realized Colton had met his miscarried sister. There are unborn children in heaven. It never really dawned on me that some parents are scared to death to meet their kids in heaven. But the Lord finally spoke to me: “This woman is gong to be presented blameless to my Father.” The world has hurts and pains, and heaven changes everything. KCM: Speaking of “heaven changes everything,” we hear a sequel has been written.

KCM: What about the critics and skeptics? TB: Heaven is for Real is a testimony. Testimony doesn’t replace scripture, but God does tell us to share our faith and our journey. It is touching many lives. Some may attack Colton because they don’t “need” us to tell them about heaven. I’ve been really disappointed in some pastors I used to respect who have lashed out without reaching out. They haven’t investigated, called us, or anything. It seems they have their theological positions to guard. KCM: How does Colton handle the critics? TB: i think God prepared him for it. He seems to accept it. “You can believe what you want,” he says. “But that doesn’t change what I saw.” From atheists and old-fashioned cynics to pharisees, he just takes it in stride. In fact, he is the inspiration behind Heaven is for Real for Kids — a book that asks the question, “What if a generation of kids grew up looking forward to heaven?” All three books share on different levels and become sources that make meaningful gifts. KCM: What is your ultimate hope as you write your books?

TB: Yes, we just finished another book entitled exactly that — Heaven Changes Everything. It’s not so much about Colton’s story, which focused on his early years. The sequel has a richer vocabulary and the flow is different. My wife Sonja wrote a third of the book and shares her miscarriage to connect with others who have suffered loss. It is a devotional with forty-three small chapters with scripture verses.

TB: The whole world needs to know that heaven truly is for real. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit exist, and people need to have Jesus in their hearts to get there. Colton’s testimony is Biblically sound and causes people to ask themselves, “Can I make a difference in way I prepare for heaven while on earth?” Me, a simple kid from Nebraska, can’t make that happen. Only God can.

KCM: Why do you think Sonja’s story resonates?

KCM: What’s next for the Burpo family?

TB: First and foremost, Sonja miscarried our daughter and Colton met his sister in heaven. That’s huge. The sequel was published just this October and takes things to the next level. Already we have received feedback from readers. A lady wrote to us that she and her husband talked about their miscarriage for the first time after 17 years of silence. Another woman finally received emotional healing after 15 years. We knew Heaven Changes Everything would speak to women, but it also speaks to men.

TB: We are working with Sony now to make a movie. The hope is that it will be released for the holidays in 2013. What an opportunity to talk about who is the God of heaven. God wants to take people to heaven. To have that discussion in movie theaters next year instead of just churches — wow! A lot of people want to know what we’ll write next. Personally, I want to take a break. We ask people to pray for us that this testimony translates correctly.

Dear Doctor: In”sights” into Opthalmology By Dr. Grace Lindhorst UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch

column may help.

Unfortunately, there are no medications, exercises or special glasses that will cause your cataract to disappear. If you are not inhibited by your vision, the cataract does not need to be treated in most cases. However, if the blurry vision and glare starts to impact your daily functions, such as driving or reading, it may be time to consider surgically removing the cataract.

In the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s important to take care of ourselves. Being good stewards of our vision is one key component to health. If you have questions about cataracts, this

Cataract surgery is an outpatient surgery that is performed at a hospital or ambulatory surgery center. During cataract surgery, usually a small incision is made in the eye and the cataract is broken up into smaller pieces and removed. A new clear lens is then placed in the eye to replace the natural lens that was removed.

Dear Doctor, I am 68-years-old and have recently noticed I am having trouble driving at night because of the glare from the headlights. Do you think I just need new glasses, or could it be something else? Dear Reader, The symptoms you are describing may be alleviated by a new glasses prescription. However, it is also possible that you are developing cataracts. A cataract is simply the clouding of the normally clear lens in your eye. This is something that occurs as we age, but can also occur in younger individuals as a result of certain medications, medical conditions, injuries or a genetic predisposition. When patients develop cataracts, they often note blurred vision, halos around lights, or glare as you describe.

To determine if this is the cause of your symptoms, I would recommend making an appointment for a complete eye exam with your ophthalmologist. Dr. Grace Lindhorst is an Ophthalmologist providing patient care at the UT Physicians at Cinco Ranch medical clinic located at 23923 Cinco Ranch Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. To schedule an appointment, please call 713-486-5300.

Razzle, Dazzle, Frazzle: The gift everyone wants, but few enjoy By Dr. K. Lynn Lewis The holidays are upon us. Feasts, celebrations, presents, family and friends — a new year with new opportunities awaits. Yet, many seem so frantic. Life is lived at such a fast pace that days, weeks, months and years pass by in a blur. We juggle acquaintances, hurry to meetings, attend events and tackle projects. The volume is loud as everyone and everything demands undivided attention. We find ourselves constantly overworking and seeking ways to get ahead so we can finally rest, looking forward to that elusive break. How nice it would be to kick back and enjoy life a little. Shoppers dazzled by advertised prospects voluntarily leave their comfortable homes and delicious meals to dive headlong into fierce, crowded retail battles. The quest is to find the earliest, cheapest gifts — or even last minute gifts regardless of cost — for families and friends. The irony is, we have an unopened gift. It is the opportunity given to us freely every week to exit the fray. For some, this concept is an anomaly, a strange ritual thrust upon them by a mean God and zealous people who have no understanding of reality. For others, it seems like a great idea, but completely unworkable in today’s society.

This gift is none other than the Sabbath. This day was meant to edify and bring us that elusive rest — that departure from chaos. In fact, many holy days (holidays) were to last as long as a week during which there was to be no regular work, but rather joyous feasting, celebration and worship. Grilled meat, fresh bread and vegetables, abundant drink, rest and worship sounds like a good thing, but so many are loathe to consider this 4th commandment a gift, or fully embrace it as a routine practice in life. I am amazed at how often God refers to the command and concept

of Sabbath in Scripture. From the account of creation in Genesis to the promise of a new creation in Revelation, God reiterates His design and intent to provide rest, especially to those who are faithful.

staring at the wall.” Harvey B. Mackay shares Lesson 44 in “Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive,” recognizing what God has instructed all along. Take a break, and good things can happen.

Moses is instructed to direct the entire nation to celebrate the Sabbath every week. He is reminded that even though the Lord created and owns the entire world, even He can take break and rest. The Lord instructed us to prepare double on the sixth day, then shut everything down to rest ourselves and honor Him on the seventh day.

God believes in His design so much that He actually promises good things to those who open this weekly gift. He warns of bad things for those who ignore the Commandment. We can fight it, but we are not a people of our own design, nor do we control most of what happens in the universe.

David recognized God’s bountiful blessing in his life when he noted appreciatively, “He makes me lie down in green pastures” (Psalm 23). Remember that feeling, perhaps when you were a kid, of just laying in the grass and not having a single care in the world?

Our culture is full of much razzle, dazzle, and frazzle, but God wills that we fill our lives with meaningful work and intentional rest that glorifies Him.

My parents and grandparents used to make me take naps as a youngster. I remember trying to find ways to fake naps, or avoid them altogether, as if that was a good thing. However, now that I am older and wiser, and like citizens of many cultures around the world, I believe everyone should take a break every day after lunch. On top of that, we can embrace one day a week that is completely different, markedly unselfish, holy, and restful. Evidence exists that those who take time to sharpen their axe can cut more wood in a given time span. They are wiser than those who insist on whacking away with a duller tool. As one highly acclaimed author asserts in one of his management books, “Some of your best people may spend some of their best time

So, how about opening the gift of the Sabbath this year? Lay aside yourself, your plans, your regular work, and for at least one day a week, do nothing. Then, if anyone asks you what you are doing, say, “Nothing. Nothing today. Today is a day to honor the Lord. Today is a holy day, a day separate, given as a gift for me, for us, for everyone.” Indeed, tomorrow and the remaining five days of the week will include hard work to bring glory to God in all that we do. But, today, why don’t you join me in exiting the fray? Let’s ignore the razzle and dazzle, avoid the frazzle, and do nothing, together, today, all day, once a week, every week all year, for the glory of God.” Dr. K. Lynn Lewis serves as Executive Director/Provost of The Bible Seminary located at 2655 S. Mason Road, Katy, TX 77450. 281-646-1109 (O) | 281646-1110 (F) | 832-525-5244 (C) lynn.lewis@thebibleseminary.org | www. thebibleseminary.org

Her performance was deeply touching. In Women of the New Testament — Experiencing Jesus through the eyes of the Daughter of Jairus, Anna the Prophetess & Martha of Bethany, Morvant shared the journey of these special women. From humorous to inspiring, her unique perspective helps audiences to experience God’s presence in new ways: Snapshots of God in the Everyday Do you wonder why God doesn’t speak to you the way he spoke to people in Biblical times? Perhaps He is speaking to you, just in a different language. Explore how to listen for God’s voice and see His hand in the events of everyday life. Bridge the gap between your spiritual and physical lives as the ordinary becomes the extraordinary

Lessons in Faith from Children We all try to educate our children in their faith. But if we let Him, God can use our children to teach us. After this presentation you’ll look at “kid’s stuff ” in a whole new light—through eyes of faith. A Fragrant Offering Be open to receive what God will reveal as you explore Mark’s gospel story of the woman who anointed Jesus with “expensive perfumed oil.” Focus on the “perfume” the Lord has given each of us to use for his glory. Local Christian Student Highlights Ryan Dinkler

Classification: Senior Faith West Academy

Samantha Moore Classification: Senior Faith West Academy

Dinkler, 17, is a senior at Faith West Academy listed his two major accomplishments in high school as his team swimming winning the State title last year and be honored at the 2012 Homecoming as the “Most Representative Male Student” of the senior class. The honor is bestowed each year to a deserving student that exemplifies outstanding character and integrity. “It was extremely humbling in both of these circumstances,” Dinkler said. “It was a simple reminder that I am extremely blessed.”

If you walk into the cheer gym after school during the Varsity Cheer team’s practice you will see a special sight….sophomore Samantha Moore practicing with her squad. Samantha began cheering when she was 5 years old. She cheered off and on until Jr. High and has been cheering ever since. According to Samantha one of the best parts of being a Varsity cheerleader is having so many older girls around to be role models for her. It also help that cheer is a fun activity after school be excited about.

Ryan’s ambition of being called to do international mission work and some day pastor a church. Dinkler has already been on five mission trips, to include Alaska and Columbia, and plans to go to South Africa summer of ‘13.

On Monday nights you will find Samantha on the Houston Christian campus participating in Discipleship Groups. Discipleship Groups (known to Houston Christian students as ‘D-Groups’) is an opportunity for underclassmen to be mentored by upperclassmen as they walk through the Bible together. Samantha’s favorite part of D-Groups is the opportunity each week to set aside thoughts of school and homework and having time to talk about her spiritual life with her classmates.

He is inspired by Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Washington. “A friend told me about him and I like the (methodology) way he pastors a church,” he said of Driscoll. “I want to be just like him.” Other models would be W. A. Criswell, who founded Criswell College as a place to train a new generation of Bible preachers. Dinkler will be going to Criswell in the fall of 2013. Dinkler is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the chapel band. In sports he plays for the Golf team (scores in the mid-80’s), swim team (excel s in free style and helped the boys team secure the State Championship 2011-12), and has a passion for football. Unfortunately, wide receiver Dinkler was sidelined this year because of a neck injury he sustained last year.

Attending Houston Christian is a family affair as her brother, Cameron, graduated from Houston Christian in May ‘12. Upon graduating from High School, Samantha hopes to become a pediatrician. Samantha attends the West campus of Second Baptist Church in Katy. Samantha’s favorite scripture is, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV.

Pastor Profile: Frank Carroll, Trinity Apostolic Faith Church By Ruth Towns First and foremost, Frank O. Carroll lll is a busy pastor who shepherds his congregation at Trinity Apostolic Faith Church in Katy. He’s also an attorney and was involved in a suit of huge impact regarding Christian families and the religious rights of school children. He says of his church, “We believe that every church should impact their community for the good. Christian principles are without compromise and becoming an extension of Christ is something we are all called to do. We are a unique fellowship, reaching our world one person at a time. Our families come from many different experiences, yet together we find the common bond of the unity in Christ. As a conservative Pentecostal church, our primary purpose is to share Christ. We welcome you to come learn and serve with us.” For over one hundred years, Trinity Apostolic Faith Church has been reaching out to the families and community of Katy through prayer and preaching and teaching the Gospel of Christ. These roots reach deeply into historic Katy. From the humble beginnings of meeting in homes in 1905, to the present facility on the corner of Avenue D and Tenth Street in old town Katy, the church has reached out not only to those of the community, but to countless missions around the world. The first place of worship was the old one-room school house that was purchased in 1909. This served the congregation until a new white church was built in 1942. The present church was completed in December of 1964 with the addition of a Family Life Center, children’s church area and classrooms in 1983. A chapel, offices, and storage area were completed in 1987. Pastor Carroll is also a husband to April and a father to Bryant, age 6 and Lincoln, age 11 months. As an attorney, his defense of faith and free speech has literally up-ended an entrenched public school policy that muted religious expression during classroom holiday

December 2012 / January 2013

parties. The results are astounding, and many parents may not be aware of the new religious freedoms their children now have due to a case entitled Morgan vs. Swanson. As many parents with children enrolled in public schools may know, there was a time when “holiday parties” excluded any mention of Christ, regardless of the fact that our Lord put “Christ” in the word “Christmas.” No stickers of the nativity, no pencils heralding “Merry Christmas,’ and no cookies adorned with the star of Bethlehem were allowed in classroom parties. These parties were forcefully secular, despite the wishes of so many parents and children. This all changed thanks to a lawsuit derived in Plano, Texas. The result? Your publicly-enrolled students now can celebrate their faith openly in school during classroom parties. The facts and decision follow: Morgan v. Swanson: A Victory for Students Facts/Issues: In Plano, Texas, starting in 2001, school district officials began refusing to allow elementary school students to distribute material that had a religious viewpoint to their classmates. At one 2001 “winter break” party, an elementary school principal, Lynn Swanson, citing orders from district officials, confiscated a student’s goody bags because they included a pencil with the legend “Jesus Is the Reason for the Season.” At a 2003 party, Swanson and other school officials took away a student’s gift bags because they contained candy cane–shaped pens with an attached card explaining the religious origins of candy canes. Swanson also forbade students from writing “Merry Christmas” on cards sent to retirement homes.

At another school in 2004, the principal, Jackie Bomchill, prohibited a student from giving tickets to a Christian drama to her friends. She threatened to call the police when the same student asked to distribute pencils with “Jesus Loves Me This I Know, For the Bible Tells Me So” during her class birthday party. The principal also threatened to expel the young girl if she attempted to distribute “Jesus pencils” again. The principal did allow her to give out pencils embellished with a moon design. As a result of these incidents, parents sued, claiming that their children had been subject to unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination. The primary allegation of the suit was that the principals had in the past and continued in the present to enforce a ban on the distribution of religious messages by students on school grounds. The principals sought dismissal of the suit on the grounds of qualified immunity. They argued that there was no unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination based on religion because elementary school students do not possess free speech rights within the school environment and, alternatively, that such a right was not clearly established at the time the principals enforced the ban on distribution of religious materials. A federal district court in Texas denied the principals’ motion to dismiss based on qualified immunity. Ruling/Rationale: The inquiry was limited to determining ”whether it was clearly established at the time of the alleged misconduct that elementary school students have a First Amendment right to be free from religious-viewpoint discrimination while at school.” The panel rejected the principals’ argument that neither the U.S. Supreme Court nor the Fifth Circuit “has ever extended First Amendment ‘freedom of speech’ protection to the distribution of

non-curricular materials in public elementary schools.” Relying on the Supreme Court’s holdings in W. Va. State Bd. of Educ. v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) and Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Cmty. Sch. Dist., 393 U.S. 503 (1969), the panel emphasized that the First Amendment covers all public school students. ”[F]or 67 years, the Supreme Court has recognized that school officials are subject to the Constitution, and the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment is no exception.” The panel also rejected the principals’ argument that the law in this regard was not clearly established. Barnette and Tinker, as well as Fifth Circuit precedent, federal regulatory guidance and Plano Independent School District (PISD) policy, all favor the conclusion that the law is clearly established that viewpoint discrimination against religious speech in elementary schools is unconstitutional. “We hold that the First Amendment protects all students from viewpoint discrimination against private, non-disruptive, student-tostudent speech,” Judge Jennifer Walker Elrod wrote in a part of her opinion, joined by nine of the 16 participating judges. “Therefore, the principals’ alleged conduct—discriminating against student speech solely on the basis of religious viewpoint—is unconstitutional under the First Amendment.” The 5th Circuit court’s Sept. 27 decision in Morgan v. Swanson includes eight separate opinions covering a total of 100 pages. We applaud Pastor Carroll for sharing this ground-breaking information. The International Bilingual Hymns Project and a New School Year By Ruth Towns Children just seem to naturally soak up languages, as Alan Hale can attest. Through a chain of circumstances he finds himself ministering through music in both English and Spanish -- something that the young (and young at heart) enjoy. From VBS to Sunday School to camps to after school programs, Hale’s music is interactive and can help students learn guitar. Above all, it’s a way to worship on and praise on multiple levels.

effect becoming an illegal alien in a foreign land. “I started dreaming in Spanish!” he says. Leaving but returning a year later to bring Stella to the United States, he married her the next day in Utah. This Katy area couple have much to celebrate. Their 25th wedding anniversary occurred July 6, and at the age of 58 (he’s now 59) Alan cut their first music CD. But their music isn’t ordinary, nor is their ministry.

Across the Nations It was as if God was preparing Alan through earlier years spent in travel and cultural immersion. “I went on to work in 30 countries around the world, with people from over 70 different nations, on every continent except Antarctica,” says Alan. “I worked in Latin America for nearly four years total during about 20 visits to Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina, and Chile.”

Following God’s Lead With this rich background in the Spanish culture, it made sense to follow where God led him. Alan, after a lay off, began working in Health and Human Services but also focused on what he loves: composing lyrics in music in both Spanish and English. “It occurred to me that there is a huge need throughout America and other countries for music that rhymes in English and can be translated to many other languages.” In fact, language is a passion. He’s an English major who obtained his teaching certificate in ‘96. Targeting Christian music to children and adults who enjoy it, but also learn from it, is the mission. It seems that God took the combined talents and experiences of both Alan and Stella to launch a special project.

Alan was in Cúcuta, Colombia, where we met his future wife, Stella, in 1985. He ended up staying over 11 months on a three-week pipeline construction contract, severely overstaying his visa and in

in Spanish and English, praising God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and Creation, with thanksgiving, love, hope and faith in the eternal salvation through the gospel of Christ and His sacrifice. “Our new bilingual album, Somos Hijos De Dios / We Are Children of God, is truly a dream come true, combining Scriptural themes with melodies, rhymes, rhythms, and repetition. We have seen children who don’t speak Spanish singing along in Spanish before they get to the end of the first song, the very first time they hear it. Their mothers have turned to me in wide-eyed amazement, joyously saying, ‘What??!!’” says Alan. “Adults have done the same thing.”

A Method That Works When Alan and Stella sing El Padre Que Tengo Ahora / The Father I Have Now at their Friday night Spanish prayer service, and everyone sings the chorus in both languages, so the Hales know their method works well. “We put 16 tracks on this CD – eight songs with the band followed by the same 8 songs as unplugged versions – so kids who are learning to play the guitar can hear the unplugged versions and think, “I can do that by myself !” says Alan. “This is the first time our music publisher has made an album like this. I explained the idea to our producer, Don Johnson, who has also produced albums by Emmylou Harris, and he agreed because, as he told me, my acoustic guitar rhythms were driving his arrangements anyway, so the songs can stand alone as solo/acoustic works.” The Hales believe the music is a great resource for the summer camp music programs, school programs, Sunday School, youth groups and home schoolers. Free Downloads People can download all the lyrics and listen to some streaming audios of complete songs at www.wearchildrenofgod.com and www.somoshijosdedios.com. Alan relies on www.biblegateway.com for scriptures and is tackling his 365 days of praise songs - a song a day, every day, for a year. “It’s part of the great commission,” he says. “Bringing God’s word into our nation and other nations is a blessing.”

Let’s Send Emily to Bulembu, Swaziland! By Joseph Menslage Emily Saxton is a 16-year-old high school junior who aspires to be a nurse. She very much wants to travel with Mission Discovery to Bulembu, Swaziland from July 11 - 22, 2013 to serve the orphans of this village. Her duties will involve cleaning, painting and helping to renovate homes that house eight orphans each, plus foster parents and grandparents. She will tutor children in the afternoons and help wherever needed. But there is also a medical component to Emily’s trip. As a future nurse, Emily will see first hand the AIDS pandemic and the efforts of volunteers who are ushering Bulembu into a self-sustaining community. This is a mission trip like no other. Here’s a little about Bulembu (http://bulembu.org): On the border that separates South Africa from Swaziland is the community of Bulembu. Once a thriving mining town, Bulembu was abandoned in 2001 along with its hospital and 1,200 homes. A group of individuals purchased the town with a grand vision—the advancement of God’s kingdom in Swaziland. The goal is to renovate of as many homes as necessary to house 2,000 children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic, teach AIDS awareness, and create a self-sustaining community. Swaziland has the highest percentage of AIDS of any country in the world. So far, 300 children have found a home, a world-class education, and top-tier medical treatment at Bulembu.

Support Emily’s dream! How will Emily raise the $5,000 needed to make the trip? Your tax-deductible donation will help! Whatever you give goes directly to Creekside Community Church (towards Emily’s trip). You can support Emily in three ways: 1. Send a tax-deductible check to Creekside Community Church, 1450 W. Grand Parkway South, STE G277, Katy, Texas 77494— and in the MEMO line put “Emily Saxton - Bulembu.” 2. You can also visit www.thecreekside.org and give through PayPal (bottom right – Give Online) and put “Emily Saxton - Bulembu” in the description. 3. Emily will be traveling with her mom, Melanie Saxton. You can donate airline miles, which is also tax-deductible and will help tremendously with the cost of airfare. From Emily

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. By helping me go to Bulembu, you are literally changing lives (mine, and the orphans)! I believe this mission will make me a better nurse and certainly a better human being. Your generosity and kindheartedness will help make it a reality. Please email me or my mom with any questions at melanie@sabrecat.org. You can also call us at 281-795-6420. I will be writing about my experience and sharing news with you about the orphans. I am ready to see what God has planned for me and this mission.” ~~ Love, Emily

A Chat with Director Peter Ramsey By Ruth Towns It isn’t often that we interview a movie director, let alone the first African-American to direct a big budget CG-animated major motion picture. Here’s a look into the heart of Peter Ramsey, director of Rise of the Guardians. “I was raised Catholic and have great respect and a love for the things I was taught and know about the Christian faith,” says Ramsey. “For me, those who profess faith can connect with this movie because it is about values.” Ramsey is a family man who has been married over 20 years. He has three children—a set of 16-yearold twins (a boy and a girl) and a 20-year-old son in art school. His goal was to make a family-friendly movie that appeals to everyone. “The interesting thing for me is that the movie relates to holiday characters who represent very basic values and a message that can uplift anyone in any religion,” says Ramsey. The movie’s underlying themes involve hope, wonder, memories, loyalty, important lessons in maturing, and the power of dreams and imagination. Over 400 people worked on the project. Of this Dream Works Studios film Ramsey says, “Real people make movies, and many of us who worked so hard on Rise of the Guardians have families and kids. Everyone felt so good and so proud, and all had

great attitudes. That came from the values in movie.” The goal was to create characters who inspire against real-life problems. Ramsey endeavored to show a little darkness, a little scariness, and a few nightmares to contrast against Guardians, who deal with a big fear—and how to face that fear. Says Ramsey: “This movie parable is about using imagination and creativity to triumph against fear. The goal was honor the idea that these characters represent something “real” for kids. Our premise was agree with kids and treat the characters as real, characters with dimension, attitude, real emotions, real interactions,

happiness, doubt, conflict—all toward idea of respecting a notion of belief. Perhaps people who revisit what it’s like to feel like a kid again will come out of the theater believing. Perhaps this could be their first experience with faith— believing in something and living by it and seeing results.” The story is adapted from ‘Guardians of the Childhood’ by renowned author Williams Joyce and his bestselling book series. The film is dedicated to his daughter Mary Katherine Joyce, who in 2010 died tragically at the age of 18 from a brain tumor. She had once asked her father if he thought Santa Claus had ever met the Easter Bunny, and from there sprung the concept. In the film, the characters of our childhoods are surprisingly re-imagined and work against “type.” In fact, the characters are “Guardians,”—super heroes who safeguard the children of the world from harm. The Easter Bunny (Bunnymund) is 7-feet-tall and no-nonsense. “North” is the nickname for Santa Claus, a real tough guy. “After all,” says Ramsey, “There’s this guy who delivers presents to kids all over world—with reindeers. That’s crazy! So we made him a wild man.” There’s also the seemingly harmless and silent little Sandman, whose outward appearance hides his ample skills in defense of the children. Plus, there’s the Tooth fairy who seems to be part hummingbird. They need Jack Frost to join their ranks against “Pitch,” the villain Nightmare King, who seeks to terrify the children of the world. The problem is, Jack doesn’t believe in the Guardians, despite the fact he’s been hand-picked by the Man on the Moon to do just that.

Says Ramsey of his career as an African-American in Hollywood: “My journey has been great and I’ve never experienced anything that felt like an obstacle, though obviously others who came before me were not as lucky. Growing up in central Los Angeles a stone’s throw from Hollywood, I didn’t know it would be possible. A series of lucky breaks opened doors, and I walked through, beginning by doing something creative, like story boards, and helping directors lay out movies. When they see you do a good job, they’re supportive.” His advice is to never stop trying and to follow your dreams. Rise of the Guardians is in theaters now for the holidays.

Politics and Religion: Where Do We Go From Here? By Mark Williamson I was somewhat shocked and disappointed at the outcome of the election. Doesn’t everyone realize how deeply in trouble we are as a nation, and yet we re-elected a man who is a major part of the problem. The great mystery to me is how Romney got two and one half million FEWER votes nationwide than McCain did in 2008 (certainly not in some states like Texas and Oklahoma, thank God).

matter anymore? After the November election, a question needs to asked: “Where do we go from here?” In answer, the Lord seems to primarily be saying, “Jesus.” I think we do not realize how far we’ve fallen in our personal lives and in our nation. Even before the election, I’ve seen and heard how urgent it is that we repent, but realistically,

How could this happen? Whatever happened to America? What ever happened to honesty, integrity, adherence to higher and lofty goals? Have we tipped the scales, where the anarchist mentality of the “Occupy movement” is beginning to carry the day? Are the “47%” of takers to be written off, as Romney wrongly implied? Does truth and consequences

repent for what? Given the proper meaning of the word “repent” and the whole of moral perspective, it is strategically true. To repent means to change one’s mind. And one thing we need to change our minds about is compromise. Think of how many Christians are in bondage to pornography. How many Christians simply lie daily as a convenience? How many Christians don’t really care to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, but rather give them over to cell phones, video games, sports and any other amusing distraction? How about divorce? What about marital and family disorder? How about how Christian business owners treat and pay their employees? How about Christian employees doing their best on the job for their employer “as unto Christ,” regardless of how they’re treated? In short, how about maturity? Not to mention, we do not help the poor as we’re supposed to. We leave it to the government, when it is mostly none of their business. People are in some way going to appreciate and “glorify” whoever helps them in their time of need, be it Jesus, or government. A generation or two of the latter leads to a bondage to government entitlements. Government is NOT God, though many in government want to be seen as such, especially now. As a nation we continue to allow abortion and teach the stupid, but deadly, lie of evolution. We make “conservative” arguments about how some things ought to be, but do so largely without stating that it is God who says “such and such.” We make “good arguments” without making the case that it is God who lays out for us the way things should be in our personal lives, culture and society, and it is to Him that we are accountable. It seems many people want to practice the “Christian religion” but do not seek the heart relationship nor the trust and obedience of doing things God’s way, at least not in the sense that they want Christianity genuinely impacting their everyday life. As I’ve said for many years, there is nothing wrong with America that is not wrong in the church. God and His Word are the very foundation and life of this nation. But perhaps we’ve become more like the churches in Revelations, especially the church in Ephesus, who did many things right, but had lost its first love. Now at the same time, evil is being increasingly unleashed on many levels. Just look at Israel and the Middle East. Many dynamics are on the pathway and “coming to a head.” The attacks against Christ and

answer will take some real wisdom and backbone, learned from the word of God. Republicans have had their share of holding the House, Senate, and the White House over the last two or three decades, but have never defunded Planned Parenthood, or even PBS, for that matter. What good are claims of truth and righteousness that are never acted upon? It’s time they grew a spine! So where do we go from here? Re-evaluation, Re-examination, Repentance, Re-direction, Renewal! May God help us to get it right, in truth and love for those who are lost and hurting, the renewal of America, and especially for His glory and honor! Trust and rest in the reality that God is for us, and not against us. God will take care of His own, even if we are facing increased tribulation on this earth. God is love. He is faithful. And He cannot and will not deny Himself. His body, the church, seems to be increasing exponentially. At this writing, the “fiscal cliff ” is headed our way. Eventually, a day of reckoning will come. Some say the Republicans should just walk away and let the Democrats “own it.” I think there is great wisdom in that perspective, except that a house divided against itself will fall. But going along to get along (compromise with evil) is not the solution, either. The December 2012 / January 2013
