About 20 years ago, when I was a member of the First Baptist Church in Houston, each of our Sunday schools “adopted” a family for Christmas. My wife and I were part of the delivery team that would take a Christmas meal, toys, clothing, and various other items to our adopted family. I can still vividly recall pulling into what I thought was a condemned apartment complex. The parking lot looked like an artillery practice range, with holes on the concrete so massive it seemed they could swallow up our cars. The majority of the apartments were vacant and boarded up- we pulled up one of the few units that wasn’t, and went inside. Immediately upon entering, I was taken aback by the state of the apartment- there was no electricity and most likely no running water either. The family who greeted me was Hispanic, with two beautiful daughters who were around 5-7 years old. When my wife and I presented them with their Christmas gifts and meal, I will never forget how huge the children’s eyes widened with excitement once they realized they would be having toys that Christmas. The husband couldn’t hold back his tears, knowing that somebody cared enough about his family to provide such a wonderful act of love. Out of all my Christmases, that is the one imprinted so permanently in my mind. The one in which I gave and did not receive. That’s what Christmas is after all… isn’t it? God gave His only begotten Son so that we might have eternal life. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Always remember that Jesus is the Reason for the Season! Joseph R. Pastor Profile: Pastor Emmanuel Okon Pastor Emanuel accepted the Lord Jesus Christ in his heart as his lord and savior on August 1984 and was baptized the 25th of August 1985. Destiny International Mission that was founded in July 1995, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, by Archbishop Cletus Bassey. After more than 7 years of visiting the city of Houston to hold interdenominational conferences and revival meetings with pastors and church leaders. It was during this time that Pastor Emmanuel first felt his calling to preach in February 2004 and on June 2006 he accepted his calling to preach. Under the ministry of Destiny International Mission, Archbishop Cletus Bassey was directed by the Holy Spirit to begin the Houston Family of Destiny in August 2012. When asked Pastor Emmanuel of Destiny International Mission beliefs system and core foundations he replied with passion saying, “ It is the Vision by God’s ordained purpose, destiny, love, and compassion like the heart of Jesus. As well as character development made possible by the work of the Holy Spirit in us”. Pastor Emmanuel said he would like all to know that the vision of Destiny International Mission purpose is to bring men to their destiny in God.

The Desire of God Pastor Emmanuel married his beautiful wife Pastor Chinyere Okon Emmanuel on June 2006. A dynamic woman of God always supportive of her husband and the church, she helps with the Women Ministry and Music Ministry. Charismatic Kids Corner: Making Family Traditions By Kris Prewitt

To fellow parents, it is no secret that our cherished days with our children are numbered. Youth is fleeting, and it seems instantaneous that the mere infant you once held in your arms has grown into the child clutching your hand as you walk her to her first day of kindergarten, and before you know it, down the aisle. This idea often leaves us longing for the old days, with them as precious little ones. Fortunately, with the immense technology today, there multitudes of ways to preserve and prolong our treasured family members. I (as a semi-crafty mom) have found that various crafts such as handmade scrapbooks or framed pages are the best form of commemoration. However, while I enjoy crafting, my plate is brimming with full-time work in addition to being the mother of three (as many of you know, it takes a village!), and I simply do not have the leisurely time to spare on completing all of the enticing activities on my Pinterest boards. In fact, just the other day my husband told

me, “No more projects for you because you do not always finish!” and I grudgingly had to admit that he made sense. For the longest time, I’d fallen victim to the disease that is procrastination. I would store photos and digital images and stock up on all of the “on sale” scrapbook pages and embellishments I could get my hands on, all with the mentality that ONE day I would get to it. Thankfully, my best friend Annie and her 3 year old son (my godson) pulled me from the depths of my procrastination and motivated me to start crafting again. If Annie, a single mother getting her MBA and opening her own clothing boutique (alineonline.com) could conjure up the time to scrapbook with her son, why couldn’t I? After talking it over, we decided to create an annual tradition on New Year’s Day, after all of the family festivities, to get our kids together and involve them in the memoir making process. An indirect perk of this family fun was that it emphasized to our children the difference between routine activities, and tradition. Routine activities involve

brushing your teeth, combing your hair, and tying your shoes- they’re not necessarily exciting, but nonetheless essential to keep going on a daily basis. Traditions, however, are inherently beautiful in the sense that they have more meaning. Saying grace together before meals, a family game night, meditation/devotion time, and worshipping together on Sunday mornings are all invaluable traditions that unite a family together as one committed to honoring the Lord. These traditions also communicate Christian values with our children, family, and friends- our faith is not just a set of prop

Author Spotlight: Patti Londa Greene Devotion By Kris Prewitt Joshua 1:8 says, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” The Bible teaches that devoting ourselves to seeking higher awareness in Christ is something that we must do daily in order to walk closely with God. We must remind ourselves consistently of His Words so that we will continue to make good decisions as Christians. Author Patti Londa Greene’s new devotional books for adults and adolescents equip us to successfully do just that. In her book, Awaken Me: A Devotional Prayer Journal (ISBN 978-1-4627-2578-6) readers will find 365 pages, each with a Bible verse, a suggested chapter reading, a “God wants me to…” section, and journaling space to reflect their thoughts, meditations, and goals. A main component of this particular devotional journal the reminder we need as believers to praise, confess and repent, forgive, pray and thank God daily. We are all different and because

each of us has our own unique relationship with God, Greene decided not to include sequential dates on the pages. Greene says, “The dateline is intentionally left blank, so you can style the date as you choose and not feel guilty if you miss a day of study. And you won’t waste paper because of unused pages”. This book reiterates the importance of prayer during your quiet time. Greene suggests, “compiling a list of prayer requests. Your prayer requests can include ones for your family, country, finances, jobs—whatever you’re feeling in your heart. Be specific in your prayers. Look back over this section of your prayer journal from time to time to see how your prayers are answered, noting God’s wisdom and how He chose to answer your requests”. These sentiments go back to what Joshua 1:8 teaches us, in order to be prosperous in our relationship with the Lord, we must meditate on His Word day and night. In addition, it is imperative for us, as parents, to teach the same guidelines and practices we seek daily, by example to our children.

One of our goals should be to teach our children to pray and to love the Word of God. For our teenagers and young adults Greene has written a special devotional journal / workbook entitled, God, It’s Me: 181 Days for Young Adults to Become Passionate about Prayer and Bible Study(ISBN 978-1-4627-3821-2). This workbook will enable them to begin the fundamental steps of meditation with God if they have not done so already. To use the journal most effectively, she suggests for them to find a quiet, comfortable place to pray and reflect on His Word. Greene hopes her book will help encourage others to grow in their relationship with God. Greene’s advice to youth using her book is to remember that, “Your devotional prayer journal is your journal. There is no right or wrong way to use this journal. Do not worry about spelling or punctuation. Just allow your thoughts and prayers to flow freely onto the pages. Hopefully, this journal will be used daily, but if you miss a day or two, just pick it up where you left off and start again. You will become wiser, stronger, enlightened, and amazingly transformed.” Greene designed this book, “to be used by Young Adults as a daily devotional / workbook / prayer journal / Bible study. However, it can also be used by teachers, youth workers, and anyone who wants to learn more about the issues young people face in today’s world or anyone who would like to learn how to relate and talk to young people about what is on their minds”. Greene noticed that there were very few appropriate journals available with all the components the Bible had taught her to include in her daily meditations. Switching Gears When God Calls Before retiring, Greene was a Certified School Library Media Specialist (Librarian) in Katy, Texas for 15 years. So, when I prayed about what the Lord wanted me to do – I said, “Lord, how can you use me? I don’t play the piano and I don’t like hanging out at the gym.” The Lord said, “But, Patti, I have been preparing you all these years. I allowed you to grow up in a family that loved books. I surrounded you with books all the time. You have created your own library of prayer journals – 40 years worth. Now is the time to write a

book and share with others what I have let you experience.” So, with the Lord’s guidance, Awaken Me: A Devotional Prayer Journal was born. Greene has a B.A degree from Baylor University in Sociology an Education. She attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Missouri for her graduate studies. Caterina, or Cat, is one of many super stars at Mission Bend Christian Academy. She has been enrolled at MBCA since 2007, when she was just a toddler. She loves reading, and participates in the school’s reading buddy program, mentoring and reading to a kindergarten student. In her spare time, Cat is actively involved in Girl Scouts where she has achieved the level of Junior. Cat also participates with the Girl Scout Drill Team, The Starlettes, and enjoys gymnastics. Cat has received numerous awards, including Honor Roll at school and The Never-Ending Smile award in gymnastics. When she grows up, Cat wants to go to college to be a teacher because she loves school.

Melissa Phan is a senior at Calvary episcopal preparatory. She is the president of student council, choir, and NHS, and helps teachers out at her school. Through her school, Melissa competes in TAPPS events, where she has reached the state level for math and speech every year. She is a former member of the Fort Bend Teen Service League and a current member of Youth in Philanthropy. Melissa hopes to attend Rice University with a major in neuroscience/chemical engineering with a minor in business. She hopes to one day become a pediatric neurologist, as she loves working with kids. Also, she looks forward to founding a non-profit organization for helping kids and teens impacted by negative self-image and eating disorders.

Robotic surgery, or “robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery”, is a cutting-edge medical advancement that has drastically increased in popularity over the last decade. However, over the recent years, it has been increasingly utilized in general and gastrointestinal surgery for a variety of procedures, including removal of the gallbladder, repair of hiatal/diaphragmatic hernias and surgery for heartburn and achalasia, weight loss surgery (sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass), resections of the stomach, surgery of the spleen, adrenal glands, pancreas and liver, hernia surgery, and as in colon and rectal surgery. In addition, single incision surgery can be performed using robotic surgery. Some of the unlimited advantages of robotic surgery include precision, superior visualization, degrees of movement greater than that of the human wrist, and the ability to perform technically complicated operations through very small incisions. The robotic platform is a seamless extension of the surgeon’s hands and fingers. The surgeon is always in control and directs the movement of the robotic arms at each stage of the operation. God, but I knew in my innermost being, it was something I was called to do. Oftentimes, we want God’s best, but we do not want to give up habits, addictions, and friends that are not God’s best. He wants us to operate from our BEST, not our BASE. I was serving in church and advancing in my career through a guest speaker circuit with the release of my book when I received a call from Nicole, an acquaintance of mine from the singles’ ministry at Lakewood Church. I always had high regard for Nicole. She was involved in leadership activities at the church and could minister the Word in such a practical and relevant way. I enjoyed listening to her stories and actually looked forward to when it was her turn to share. To my surprise, she had great interest in my book and scheduled me to speak in her singles’ ministry. Soon thereafter, we began to collaborate on ministry projects. I noticed she dressed very conservatively at church. I remember the first time I saw her at Whole Foods grocery shopping. She looked like a completely different woman! Yet, she maintained a modesty about her that intrigued me. One night after church, she brought her sister along as we met for coffee. Afterwards, I decided to pray about Nicole and whether I should pursue her. God gave me so much peace and confirmation about her. Eventually, our friendship became a blossoming courtship.

Nicole is a 35 year-old virgin who speaks about abstinence. She is very intelligent. She teaches high school Spanish. She grew up in ministry, as she is the daughter of a gospel recording artist, and she loves God with all of her heart. Not only did she exceed my expectations for a woman, she treats me better than any woman I have ever dated. For the first time in my life, I am deeply in love. By listening to His instruction and utilizing the ‘formula’, God has shown me a glimpse of my future. When I met my fiancée, she wanted to know, upfront, about my morale and standards regarding sexual integrity. She wanted to know if I was a man who had vision for his life. God blessed Adam with Eve. As it is known about Adam, a man does not need his helpmate until he is busy doing what he was created and called to do. I can identify with that because I believe I have truly begun to discover my purpose... my life’s ministry. For a long time, I desired a helpmate. Once I recognized and accepted how valuable support, encouragement, and presence could be in a purpose-driven life, I understood God’s call. A few years ago, I was not ready for a woman like Nicole. I was not able to live in holiness because I satisfied the cravings of my flesh. I was not capable of honoring a godly woman because I was floundering in a sea of uncertainty. I am so thankful to God. I am now a man anchored in his identity with Christ. My initial goals are to cover, esteem, redeem, and provide for my wife-to-be. We are 45 days away from our wedding and I can truly trust God with His ‘formula’ for my future!

Honor @ Home: Making Sense Out of Marriage By Pastor Cardenas Home values seem to be at a record low in today’s society, and I am not talking about the current cost of a house. We seem to lack the foundational values needed to build lifelong marital relationships. To some, the idea of getting married makes no sense after considering all the risks and statistics that go along with it. Nonetheless, marriage is a divine idea. It is the first human institution founded by God. It is the nucleus of society. It is the place where a man and woman grow together in every aspect of life. To make sense out of marriage, we must consider the cornerstones on which it is built. We must reflect on the great joy and possibilities that marriage offers. First, we must SEE that marriage is about consecration. The word consecration literally means, “association with the sacred”. It is about dedicating the relationship to God. A couple must realize that God is the chief architect and ultimate authority of their marriage. They need to maintain in their hearts that consecration honors God and one another as a couple. Temptation will come, but a consecrated couple knows that they were set apart for each other no matter the season or circumstances. Secondly, we must FEEL a sense of companionship in marriage. God saw that all His creation was good, but did not find a suitable helper fit for man. Since it was not good for man to be alone, God created a very special helpmate for him; Woman. Statistics today show that over the course of a lifetime, married people have the upper hand over singles in their finances, physical and emotional health, and spiritual growth. A good companion makes life’s long journey enjoyable. Every couple that is hoping for their marriage to last must tune their

hearts to HEAR commitment every day. Giving up easily is a cheap and dishonest way to deal with the problems we face in marriage. Everyone has moments of discouragement and distraction, but these do not offer excuses to throw away a relationship that is supposed to last. Commitment goes beyond the responsibilities of parenthood and the natural changes that happen over the years. It is about sticking together regardless of the weather. It is about having a foundation that is built upon the Rock. Marriage is not a contract where one can find loopholes to get out of it when it becomes inconvenient, but about walking by principles and safeguarding against ill emotions. A good marriage finds two people working and acting as a team. It has the fragrance and SMELL of collaboration. It is about working shoulder to shoulder and watching each other’s back. Domination or manipulation does not exist with a couple that thinks and acts like a team. Finally, a couple that learns to run the race gets to TASTE the sweet aroma produced by mutual consideration. A considerate husband knows his wife’s specific emotional needs. He knows she is the weaker vessel and honors her accordingly. He knows her weaknesses and he will do everything possible to cover them in love. A considerate wife knows the needs of her husband. She is able to support him in his open, and even hidden, insecurities. She is there to offer her opinions and directions in every opportunity, and specially in moments of crisis. As I See It... By Gary Gillen The voters of the United States dealt a devastating blow to the Democratic Party and repudiated the policies of President Barack Obama by increasing the Republican control of the United States House of Representatives and sweeping the Democratic leadership from their control of the US Senate by handing Republicans control of that body as well. Before the election President Obama famously stated that while he was not on the ballot his policies were. The voters showed him just how they felt about those policies. The Obama administration’s over-reaching drive to intrude into every area of American life helped convince voters to elect even more Republican governors. The states have long been the laboratories of democracy. This administration’s efforts to federalize every issue has backfired with the voters. In Texas voters again placed Republicans in every statewide office including Senator Glenn Hegar who was elected State Comptroller. Republicans increased their numbers in both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate. Voters may feel they have done their job but there is more to do. As a consequence of the election of Hegar to the office of Comptroller he resigned his Senate seat and the Governor called a special election to elect a candidate to complete the remaining two years of Hegar’s unexpired term. As this column went to press three candidates had announced their

intentions to run for the office. State Representative Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham explained that “Texas Senate District 18 includes roughly half of Fort Bend County and all or parts of 20 more counties.” From the Gulf Coast at Corpus Christi to Caldwell in central Texas the 18th district is large and diverse. While the election is open to any candidate from any party, the sheer size of the district will require a formidable candidate with a well funded campaign to be able to reach voters. In an interview Kolkhorst explained the role her faith plays in her office of State Representative. “My faith serves as a compass that guides me each day. I strive to make every decision in the Legislature with the knowledge that He is guiding me and I often use my daily devotion for inspiration.”
