What to Know About the COVID-19 Vaccine for Children

By Dr. Robert Wotring, Kauai Medical Clinic

“Vaccinations are safe and effective. They help protect children, their families, as well as people that they’re around at school and on their sports teams.”

Keiki ages 5 to 11 are able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, offering another layer of protection for Hawai‘i’s families from COVID-19.

“I am very excited that we have the vaccine available for children ages 5 to 11, and I strongly encourage parents to get their children vaccinated or to talk to your child’s pediatrician if you are uncertain or have questions,” said Dr. Robert Wotring, a pediatrician at Kaua‘i Medical Clinic. “Vaccinations are safe and effective. They help protect children, their families, as well as people that they’re around at school and on their sports teams.”

For parents who may be unsure about vaccinating their child, consider the following:

• Children who are infected with

COVID-19 can spread the virus to family members and others, even if they have no symptoms.

• While most children experience mild or no COVID-19 symptoms, they may be at risk for long-term effects that can last for months, even after a mild infection.

• Fully vaccinated individuals are 10 times less likely to be sick enough to need to be in the hospital with

COVID-19. • Vaccinating children can help keep them in school, and help them safely participate in sports, playdates and other group activities.

• School quarantine and isolation guidelines may differ for fully vaccinated children compared to those who are not vaccinated.

If you have questions about what is right for your child, talk to someone you trust like your child’s pediatrician, who knows your child’s health background and can answer questions to help you decide what is best for you and your family.
