untied Editor’s Note Expect the unexpected They usually say do not judge a book by its cover, meaning what you see is not always what you get. Sometimes people tend to say “what you see is what you get”, that is not completely true. Take for instance grape fruit. It is orange on the outside but on the inside it is red. You could easily mistake it for an orange but it is not and the taste is not how you would expect either. This sometimes is a lesson that needs to be learned by others as they fall easily for things that are not what they seem to be. So before you even judge someone, a situation, something make sure it’s something you understand and have an extended knowledge about. You may think you know but you don’t.

Leigh the fashion Goddess

S

he loved posing in front of the cameras when she was younger, now Lelethu Rasi who goes by the name Leigh most known as Goddess Celo is living her dream. The goddess of beauty and fashion, the ruler of all creativity, the mother of style , the creator of fashion Egyptian Goddess- mother of maturity, warm wisdom, unconditional love and the most powerful Goddess who poses the power of water and great holy magic. The look of things we could say that Leigh has inherited a lot from ancient goddess because of the power, braveness, loves, fierceness and a heart soft as a feather pillow. Yeah that is the best way to describe her she is one person with a beautiful heart.

7

Leigh loved fashion as a young lady who was born and bred in the Eastern Cape, East London. As a young girl who didn’t know where to start with her dream but a big plan with a great strategy to tackle the journey to her bright future. Lelethu is now proud of the lady she has grown up to be – she can proudly give herself a tap on the shoulder because. She has built herself an impressive empire in the fashion industry with her brand LaNuestra a killer bikini/ swimwear suits and body costumes with has shaken many designers to up their game when it comes to creativity and she recently showcased at the Nelson Mandela Bay Fashion Show where many designers highly requested that she does a collaboration with them. She also has the eye on spotting talent she partnered up with Astrological Models where she scouts and trains models to give them a great future. She has a giving hand.

Leigh lives by Tyra`s special flair to the population lexicon.  SMIZE Verb. Smile with your eyes, in a sexy playful way.  FIERCE Adj. When your hair, outfit or attitude is cool and sexy.  TOOCH Verb. To pop your booty out to look more flattering in photos.

Lelethu is a lady that goes by the saying that says ``don’t sleep on yourself`` wise, impressive and motivating, she once motivated me with those words too. She is a hard worker who is very clever and super smart her brain is like an ongoing machine with produces only the magicthings that one would never think of- thinking on her feet is one of the things she does to perfection, which makes her a brave fearless woman. She might walk like Tyra Banks but she thinks like Bill Gates. When getting to her style, she has style that endures, one would swear in her past life she was Madonna. Style is her essential sources but creativity is the core of her heart and brain. Starting from primary She was a very bright young girl who took every challenge that came her way whether it were academicals or showing her skills- by being that child she was it worked well for her because she was one of the best learners in her school and got many awards. When it was time for her to go to high school, life went a different direction for her. She was the new girl who got to high school late and pregnant. That is when Leigh had stepped in the real world it was time for her to face a lot of challenges – this is when she discovered her real self. She says she thought it was a way to protect herself, but then when she unleashed and invited the real Lelethu Rasi to step in and take over! Unlike many teenage girls who would be under the influence of society, she stood up for herself and did not let the people define her. Yes they find her like everyone would be but she didn’t let society define her. She is a strong woman indeed. South Africa needs woman like her.

Leigh in her bikini design 9

Came the time where she had to be the big girl and leave home. She came all the way from East London to get her Bachelor’s Degree in the Nelson Mandela University.

UGirl when she got here she held composure and became very content wadedel`igazi – in other words so be it. Lelethu didn’t only focus on her studies but started to pursue her dream on becoming a model and a fashion designer. In University she was crowned Miss UV 2015 and became a finalist for Mr and Miss NMU 2015. This fine young lady is going places and will show the world flames.

Namhla the Bogger and fashion designer amhla, popularly known as "Lolo" Lebona is a Tshwane University of Technology (Arts) 3rd year fashion design student, residing in Pretoria but originally from Pietermaritzburg, KZN. She is very passionate about fashion, design and art as a whole. She did a short course in Tourism and received her qualification in 2011. She was then given a chance to choose another course and that's how she landed in fashion. She had no idea that one could be a fashion academic. The idea of fashion was very intriguing to her and so she fell deeply inlove with fashion after her first year and it was only then that she started using her knowledge to advise others on fashion.

N

Her journey started on Facebook where she gave fashion advice to people on how to dress accordingly with respect to their body structures. She received such a pleasant response from this and so she started spending most of her time on the internet, reading, researching and trying to understand fashion better. During her research, she came across ‘Fashion Blogs’ which immediately caught her eye. She was very inquisitive on how these played such a great role in fashion, so she registered her blog ‘Fashion Crumbz’ as her very own platform, using the blog to publish any fresh content and style tips. Namhla then expanded and started interviewing talented people that are not well known. Finally, she got recognition from big bloggers when she did a fashionable interview feature with a popular soccer player. From there, she gained traffic on her blog. Namhla has had a few setbacks like delays with finishing her course on time due to financial constraints.

13

untied However, Namhla's journey in the fashion industry continues to flourish as she's worked for some of the most prestigious fashion companies which include SA Fashion Week and AFI Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. From all this, she managed to meet private designers whom she also had the privilege to work with. As per 3rd year requirement, she did her 6 weeks internship with the talented Orapeleng Modutle, who gave me an insight on the real world of fashion. For her, this was a life changing moment. Currently , Namhla is working as an assistant for another talented designer called "B.Mashilo Designs", while finishing her diploma, but she's also started building her own clothing brand called "Today's Clothing", which is a branch of her fashion company. The brand caters for both men & women for now until she graduates, then she'll specialize. Namhla is a very hard worker, a hustler & go getter! Advice that she can give to all young upcoming designers is to stay authentic, don't be a jack of all trades, find their niche market & stick to it. Gqom hit maker and dancer Fabiano Isidirane

H

is one of the most hardworking artist in Port Elizabeth. We all know him as the Gqom hit maker and dancer Fabiano Isidirane, I got the chance to sit down with this aspiring artist to get to know him better.

Who is Fabiano and Where is he from? Born Mziyanda Maki,From Port Elizabeth,Zwide and now living in KwaMagxaki.

Was being a musician always part of the plan? Well I knew I loved music but I didn't know if music was the plan God chose for me.

What does Fabiano do? I'm an artist, vocalist, businessman and overall entertainer.

If you were not an entertainer, What would you be? Lol, I'll probably be in the hospitality industry. I've worked in few restaurants so I know a lot about that industry.

18

How would you describe your sound? I would describe my sound as South African dance, because its influenced by house, kwaito and gqom. In 2016 you appeared in a youth show Hectic Nine 9,How was the whole experience? It was a humbling experience to be there, it showed me what support I have back at home because everyone was tuned in their screens. What are the biggest lessons that you have learned in life? The biggest lessons I've learned is that through God anything is possible, if you believe then you'll achieve. I've learned that though things don't always go your way at times, He always has a bigger plan for you. What keeps you going in life? My team keeps me going, Amajita Eplan Muzik. Their love and support. If you were able to go back to a young Mziyanda, What would you change? I would tell him to dream more and do more, because had i done those things then I would have been a level higher than where I am now. Who are the biggest names that you have worked with? I haven't worked with big names yet, the guys I'm working with now are the next big things, I believe they are the future. Who would you like to work with in the future? I would like to work with other guys in the African continent, Davido(Nigeria), Diamond Platinum(Tanzania), Sarkodie(Ghana) etc

19

16

What are some of your highlights in your career? There are a lot of highlights, but one has to be my event Gqom Trap Juice that is annual. It's one of the biggest event in PE. How do you feel towards 'fame'? I don't feel anything towards fame and in my mind it doesn't even exist, I try not to entertain it. Music is what I'm in for, I don't think I would be in this industry if it was just for fame.

In 5 years to come what would you like to achieve? In 5 years I see PE to be a force to reckon with, I want the world to come to this city for entertainment. I want to be the leader of out entertainment.

To someone out there who looks up to Fabiano and wants to be like him,What advice would you give him? I would tell him or her to commit to what they said they'd do, even though they are not as motivated as they were when they made the commitment. What is your motto? My motto is being better than the Fabiano I was yesterday.

GETTING TO KNOW THE CREATIVE GIFT

W

hile I was checking out on the creative’s in October, I had an opportunity to hang out with the awesome Neo Gift Makondo. Neo from Soshanguve is by far, the best sketch artist in this town. The aspiring artist started his art at a young age when he was still in primary. He used to get into trouble for tearing up pages from his books to draw. At that time he didn’t know he was being mischievous, all he knew was that he loved drawing. He says in secondary school they complement his files, sometime the teachers thought they belonged to a girl because of the neatness and creative designs on them. “After realising my passion I bought myself a blank book and drew on it every day to master the technic. In High school, people who taught creative arts were more into the culture and dance, not much on the basic of arts and how you can make a living through arts. The subjects they emphasis more on are math, science and other subjects and not art. I was advised to pursue science, although I loved drawing I was never motivated to take it as a career rather take it as a hobby. My sister encouraged me to go to the universities open days and find something I can do, and that is when I was more exposed to a much bigger world of art and fashion. I met people from different departments, departments like Fashion, interior, film and now I know there is bread and butter in arts”. Where and what do you study? TUT art campus Pretoria. On my first year I studied fine art… then I converted to Textile design and technology. What inspires your creativity?

23

The world around me. I’ve learned several ways and technics of shading. I found myself using water colour. I’m abstract, I love making a mess, once a canvas becomes a mess that is when my creativity comes out. It tells you a story on itself, that from the mess you make you can turn it into a message. That is how life is, if you learn from the mess you make, your mistake and you can turn it into something beautiful and worth value. Tell us about your greatest achievement? Yho! I have a lot, but there is one in particular that I value the most. There was a competition called “my converse my story”, it took place in the state theatre run by the Tshwane live up project. What happened was they wanted us to use our own converses, if you wore it for years and still didn’t want to throw it away. Take pictures of it and tell your story and the most interesting story wins a converse. I didn’t have a converse I didn’t have an all-star. (laughing) I found one in an abandoned place, a dumping site. I washed it and customised it, it was so dope! So I poured water on the ground and played around stumping my friend’s Pontsho and Thomas who took pictures of that moment, the splashing and creative all-star.

So I joined the competition with that concept, out of five hundred submissions I was selected on the top ten, then I was surprised when they announced my name as the winner. I bought a red all-star and customised it, from there I had clients. Most treasured moment in life When the semester ends the textile department gave me a cheque of one thousand eight hundred to enjoy my holidays. What do you see yourself without art

I and art have been close friends for a long time. Without art there’s no life, no history and I can even support my statement. Art is the only tool to preserve history, kids who are born today wouldn’t know Mandela if there was no artist who took the picture. Let’s talk about people from the past when there were no cameras, Leonardo davince. No one would know his face if there was no artist who copied his face and drew. If there’s no artist there’s no history. Technology was not there in the

past but artist were present and active in the making of history painting pictures and telling the stories Do you have a celebrity crush? Of cause I do! But she’s married, well the last time I checked. Mini Dhlamini! I loved that chick, she’s South African, and she’s thick, she brown, and she’s beautiful Yho!

If you had the opportunity to get her attention, what would you do? I’ll have to be rich and spent approximately one million to take her out for one night (laughing) Soshanguve is most popular on high crime rate and drug use. How did that affect you growing up?

18

I don’t do drugs, never did. My art is my high that’s it.

I’m not all about the money, I’m also about giving back to the community.

Crime never really affected me because I don’t give people benefit of the doubt. But I was once accused of stealing a phone one time, we get into a house we to chill and then a phone goes missing. The owner was like ‘no one is coming out with the truth so I’m going to open a case against you all’, but I didn’t take the phone. Other than that I’ve never been a victim.

Pro trees visuals

Have you ever been judged or outcast because of what you do? I’m weird. Naturally I’m weird. It doesn’t show because of my appearance but I am. I believe I’m the most talented person, I do this effortlessly and I never run out of creativity. Who is your favourite artist? My favourite artist? Uh! Myself (laughing)... No I’m kidding. Michelle Angelo. He made the statue of David, fall of men, also the creation of men. The guy was dope, He was more than just an artist he was also a poet. He came up with the one point perspective technic we using today to draw landscapes What do you do when you’re putting a break on your art, and school? I do community projects. I joint a forum that promote good hygiene environment. The organisation is called Itereleng kutlwano corporative and I’m the deputy chair. Our offices are based in Mabopane station (Pretoria) and we hold meetings every Thursday about how we can improve the hygiene on our environment.

27

I work with Thomas choke my friend and partner Offerings Specialise in graphic design, Clothes, illustrations Is there anything you don’t do? Yes… I don’t quit! I don’t stop learning. How much do you charge for a painting? I usually charge five hundred for A3 and if its A2 and A1 it goes up to thousand. Locals clients I have a discount for support and appreciation. You know at Kasi you like to negotiate. I’d like to see you try with pick n pay (laughing) What advice do you have for the youth out there? You know who you are, you know what you’re capable of. You can never take a fish from the sea, put it on the tree and expect to it to hang like a monkey. We are not gifted the same, If you’re not good in math try to find something your good at and follow it. Let it be something that you love and if its passion let it generate income for you so it may silence people. Because all we hear is ‘oh you can draw but you have bills to pay’ find a way to sell yourself, you can’t invest your twenty four seven into something that doesn’t bring anything back. Time is running and you are not getting any younger. As it does’ keep it going, dream, achieve and grow into your skill.

ntied Hair How to Have Healthy Hair

I

f your hair is dull, frayed, or damaged from the use of dyes and chemicals, you can start right now to get healthier hair. Using healthy washing and styling habits, avoiding harsh hair treatments, and eating a nourishing diet will have your hair looking healthy again in no time.

Change your washing routine. Do you wash your hair every single day? This can really dry it out, since you're washing away the oils your scalp produces to keep your hair shiny and healthy. Washing every day can also lead to oily hair, since stripping your hair of its oils causes your oil glands to go into overdrive. Try this routine instead: Wash your hair just three or four times a week. Giving your hair a break in between washings will restore its balance. It might be a little oily for the first week or so, but your hair will soon look more healthy and vibrant than ever.

Rinse out your conditioner with cold water. Hot water is hard on your hair and can lead to split ends and frizz. Rinsing out your conditioner with cold water seals the cuticle, resulting in shiny, bouncy hair.

Handle your hair gently. Think of your hair like your best silk dress. After hand washing it, would you ball it up and wring it out? No, that would destroy its shape and fibers. Your hair is similarly fragile and needs to be treated with care to stay healthy. After washing your hair, gently pat it dry with a towel instead of wringing it out. Let it finish air drying. Use a comb instead of a brush. Forcing a brus through tangled hair can cause it to rip and break. Use a wide-toothed comb to gently work through the tangles from bottom to top to prevent breakage.

46

Use heat styling devices sparingly. Put away your hair dryer, straightener, curling iron, and hot rollers unless you have a special occasion at hand. Applying heat to your hair can damage it, so it's best to let your hair air dry instead. If you want to use the blow dryer sometimes, use it on a cool setting. When you do use heat styling devices, be sure to put a protective serum in your hair beforehand. Use homemade treatments. Try an egg yolk and olive mask, a vinegar rinse, or put plain yogurt or sour cream on your locks. Search online for instructions. Use egg oil (Eyova): Egg oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and cholesterol, and is like a complete solution to hair problems like hair loss, grey hair, and frizzy hair.

Avoid breaking and unhealthy hair like this

How to Make a Wig aking a wig for everyday use can be a difficult, timeconsuming task, so it usually gets left up to the professionals. If you're interested in trying to make a wig yourself, however, you can do so as long as you have the right tools and plenty of patience. Here's how to do it.

untied 

Measure around the head at the hairline.[1] Use a cloth tape measure to measure along the hairline. The tape measure should extend from the base of your hairline at your neck to the top of your hairline at the forehead. The tape measure should wrap just above the ears on either side of your head. Do not pull the tape measure. It should lie flat against flattened hair, but it should not be taut.

43



Measure down the center top of your head. Place the end of a cloth tape measure at the center of your forehead, matching the end of the tape measure to the beginning of your natural hairline. Drape the tape measure over the crown of your head and down to the middle of the nape, where you natural hairline ends. As before, do not pull the tape measure. It should lie flat against flattened hair without being taut.



Measure from one ear to the other. Bring the end of the cloth tape measure to the uppermost point at which your ear connects to the rest of your head. Drape the tape measure over the crown of your head and back down to the same position of the opposite ear. The tape measure should rest on both ears along the point at which eyeglasses or sunglasses would sit. Once again, the tape measure should lie flat against flattened hair but should not be pulled tight.

Growing your fashion Business

H

aving a fashion business is not much different to any type of business; worrying about the cost of production, making sure satisfying your customers and always finding creative ways to keep abreast of trending practices( in this case, style and designs). But only in fashion industry do you need to be more innovative than other industry. It is a cutthroat industry and in the words of the supermodel turned business woman, Heidi Klum, ‘’as you know in fashion, one day you are in. and the next day, you are out’’ So, how do you grow a business? By continuously having a customer service reviews and asking customers where you can improve. It is also a great opportunity to maintain a relationship with your existing customers - the 80/20 rule where most marketing should be aimed at the loyal customers is most effective guide.

Loyal customers hold the most purchasing power and it will do your fashion business a world of good by always checking up on them. Even with having a stellar customer service review, you still have clothes (if you’re a fashion designer) that’s in keeping with the rest of the world to boost and attract your other designated target market. You also have to anticipate trends and be a bit of a fashion forecaster. Because everything is now online, having an online boutique is not only cost effective (no paying for rent and other office necessities) it can also be ‘’visited’’ and you merchandise bought by a wide range of people at the comfort of their own homes. Make sure that the online store/website is visually authentic and display some of your personal details accompanied by a portrait picture of yourself – the owner. This will help put customers’ fears at bay knowing that they are doing business with an ‘’actual’’ person. 49

The other thing of growing your fashion business is by having discounts and vouchers and having a the old tried and tested 50% discount of items not selling well to boost sale and minimise loss. Greatest investment is to Invest in Yourself Invest in Yourself: You can afford it and you are worthy! Investing in yourself has the best returns. The risks are minimum and the returns are guaranteed. Why should you invest in yourself? Besides the fact that investing in yourself is one of the most important things you can do for yourself, returns are guaranteed. Also, who do you spend the most time with other than yourself, right? How can you invest in yourself? Set goals for yourself. When you have a goal that you would like to reach, all that you do is aligned with reaching your goal. If for example, you want to sleep early so you will be able to wake up early the next morning, you do all that you can to get to bed early so you can sleep early. Have a plan. “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Having a plan is very important, it puts things into perspective and it allows you to find a way as to how you will do things. Also, it helps you identify the purpose of why you started and when you know why you started it will be easy to continue on with the journey as you know where you are headed. Discover your strengths. Believe it or not, we all good at something, difference is some discover their strengths sooner than others and some ignore their strengths because they have not identified them as strengths.

51

Most successful people have discovered what they are good at and have built on it. Stop procrastinating. Procrastination is the thief of time, what you put on hold for tomorrow could have been done today. Start today, start now. There is no better time like the present to invest in yourself. Time wasted never returns and time is the most valuable asset you have when investing in yourself. We all have 24 hours in a day, even the rich and famous. What are you doing with your 24 hours? Love and respect yourself. When you love and respect yourself, you are most likely to invest in yourself. You are able to get rid of toxic people in your life whom you do not need because it doesn’t matter how long they have been in your life. Surround yourself with positive influences.

Invest in your sparkle, we were all made to shine!

untied Your fashion sense speaks volumes Currently we are living in the decade where there is a lot of communication going on. I am one of those who have been privileged to know and understand that it is not only the sound making items that speaks but also items that have no ability to speak in the “human point of view”. I don’t think some of us do understand that, everyday our fashion choices and personal style send specific messages about us. It has been proven quite a number of times, firstly by those who are close to us, secondly on the streets, thirdly at school and lastly in the work place. Some of us wear certain fashion because other people in our groups wear them, which is a rather peculiar impression when we take a moment to ponder it. We follow trends that somebody in the fashion industry sets for the season and we hurry to the store to keep up with the times. Not everyone is so keen about these set trends some follow fashion shrewdly, picking and choosing the pieces they like, and this works out for them. They create their own style and there are certain beings that are even able to create their own trends using their own creativity. Other people refuse to follow it entirely and conform to the counterculture, which is still technically a form of conforming. Pause for a second and evaluate the outfit you are wearing right now. Your clothes and personal style speak dimensions of sizes about you.

Sometimes your appearance says more than the words you say, especially to those who do not know you. For an example you can’t go to an interview wearing a pink miniskirt with a leopard printed crop top.

There minute you enter the reception area, they will think twice before they hire you. Your attire may be cool and hip but that is all there is to it, cool and hip. Though you may be the suitable candidate for the position you are applying for, chances are your CV will be shoved under a pile of old documents or in the dust bin. As cute as you may be, fact remains that at the office you ought to be decent and professional. Your outfit may be trending but in the corporate world it tells people something else about you. A blazer and skirt makes a different statement than a worn-out pair of black jeans. Our personal style speaks of our identity, our characters and informs those around us about the varied “societies” we belong to. Some of us belong to the corporate tribe of business managers, while others fall in with free-spirited artists. If you take a good look at everyone around you their clothing items will tell you a lot about them. Go to the streets where prostitutes stand and wait for clients wearing a skimpy top with a very short skirt, and see if you will be left alone or be approached by potential clients. Go to the bank wearing a suit and a tie and see what kind of attention will you be fishing. Whatever your style may be truth remains, it communicates. It says more than enough before you even introduce yourself.

Well, where do we fit in? There’s two philosophies out about how fashion is incorporated in our daily lives. The trickle-down effect explains how styles originate with designers and celebrities, before they slowly make their way down to us “commoners,” as explained flawlessly by Meryl Streep who plays Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada:

Wellness

Develop Healthy eating habits Developing healthy eating habits isn’t as confusing or as restrictive as many people imagine. The essential steps are to eat mostly foods derived from plants—vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes (beans, peas, lentils)—and limit highly processed foods. You can add together foods that are better suitable to be added together. Be aware of the spices or seasonings you use, make sure that they are suitable for your diet.

Faith has no eyes, faith is the eyes

"BLIND FAITH" When I was living through the toughest times in my life and my business, a young man who is my former student and a friend would visit me at the store to support me. He would listen to my story and how hopeless the situation was and how it got worse all the time. What would surprise him was the level of faith I had in God and how I believed He would turn things around whilst instead they were getting worse, so he now had a term for this, he called it "blind faith", so every time he came he would ask, how is it going with your blind faith? SHOULD FAITH SEE ? My question always would be, is it still faith if it sees? The book of HEBREWS 11: 1-3 says "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what is visible." Few things that I want to point out in this scripture.

1.CONFIDENCE: "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for....." Faith is about being confident in what you believe in, it is about trusting fully, being unshakeable, basically believing against believing. It is confidence in the God you serve that, that which He promised He will bring it to pass It is about believing in "what we do not see" (going blindly). Faith is about perceiving it with your spirit and not with your eyes. 2.UNDERSTANDING: "By faith we understand" Understanding the power and the abilities of the God you serve, knowing that He said all things are possible to them that believe. It is walking like Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego and saying even if He does not save us we will not serve or worship your god, DANIEL 3:18.That was blind faith that literally like a true blind men walking into a blazing furnace. 3.WHAT IS SEEN WAS NOT MADE OUT OF WHAT WAS VISIBLE True man and women of faith, the great generals of faith, the people with the gift of faith are never made in the public eye.

60

They are never made out of the visible, but the invisible. Abraham was made out of a ram from nowhere that was probably there when he came but was invisible to his eyes until his faith birthed it. Therefore I want to submit that if you can still calculate the sums and come up with an answer its not really faith. Faith is walking like a blind man through walls and they disappear at your touch. Faith is about perceiving it in your spirit until your birth it in the flesh. God bless you.

The internationally-acclaimed drama Roots will premiere on Monday, 6 November 8:30PM. The harrowing miniseries chronicles the story of an African man sold into slavery in America and his descendants. In the 1770s Kunta Kinte is kidnapped from West Africa and sold to a British slave trader. His journey intensifies as it unfolds, introducing viewers to the lives of the enslaved and showing the brutality, abuse and sexual violence they endure over generations. A remake of the 1977 miniseries, based on Alex Haley’s classic novel of the same name, Roots’ worldwide appeal can be credited to its awe-inspiring international locations and award-winning cast. South African viewers will recognise a number of these locations, with spectacular scenes filmed at Mtunzini’s Umlalazi River and in the Dlinza Forest, near Eshowe, in KwaZulu-Natal. The star-studded American cast which includes Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Anna Paquin and Malachi Kirby, is supported by well-known South African actors which include Nokuthula Ledwaba, Mbulelo Grootboom, and Nandi Nyembe. SAFTA nominee Ledwaba burst onto the scene as wild child Lu in Backstage, before playing diva-in-the-making Tshidi Khuse on Rhythm City and then starring as Dumile in Umlilo.

Grootboom recently starred as Ntlonipho 'Killer' Nxasana in the drama series Z'bondiwe and played Tony in the 2009 feature film White Wedding.
