Lieutenant Governor’s Message
Aloha Aqua Apes! Can you believe it’s already 2017? It seems like 2016 passed by in a flash; let’s reflect for a moment on everything we’ve already accomplished in the last three quarters of this term: • Met and exceeded our division goal of $2,000 for the Pediatric Trauma Program. • Served over 4,000 hours to the community. • Was tied for the second largest division in attendance at Region Training Conference with 48 members attending. • Had over 100 members attend Fall Rally North and bought both a Lt. Governor and an Executive for the first time! • Increased membership compared to last year at this point. We truly have accomplished so much already and I’m so proud of each and every aqua ape who contributed to these efforts. Without you all, none of this could have been possible. As we head into the final quarter of this term, breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that much has been done already and SENIORS! college apps are finally over! However, that does not mean all of our work is done. As servant leaders in our communities, we are never done helping others and we should keep striving to attain our goal of 10,000 service hours. In addition, think about what you want to keep the same from the previous years and what aspects of your life you would like to change. Stay confident because all of you are capable of doing what you want in life. I personally am extremely moved by all the support Aqua Apes have shown to each other this term and I could never have asked for a better division to serve in my final year of Key Club. Looking ahead to the final stretch, remember to SMILE because that’s what started the term; let’s end it that way too! SMILE with me! Please contact me if you have any questions :-) See you all soon! January Service Spotlight
What is the Spotlight
on Service Program?
The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.
Project Ideas: Retirement and Assisted Living Homes
This winter, you may want to consider visiting and volunteering at your local retirement and assisted living homes. Set up a Key Club bingo tournament, board game night, or a performance to entertain and bring new experiences to the seniors.
Food Banks and Shelters
Many cities and towns across the California-Nevada-Hawaii District have food banks and shelters where assistance is needed. Contact the volunteer coordinators from the local provider and set up a day for the club you serve! By physically volunteering at food banks and shelters, you are showing compassion toward others and providing the assistance needed to run these vital institutions.
Local City/Town Government contact your local city or town recreational office to set up volunteer events. Many city councils and governments have branches to coordinate and facilitate service events. Clubs can help the town by painting curbs, cleaning traffic signs, working on beautification projects, and so much more!

January Service Spotlight
the January sosp focus is...
Community Outreach Bake Sale Bake sales are a wonderful outlet to fundraise for any cause! Select a busy store to host the event at. Make sure to also have time to make posters and a “donation jar. Sell away your sugary delights and fundraise for a good cause!
Bingo Everybody LOVES Bingo! Host an event where families can come together and play BINGO. You can charge a small fee for admission and sell snack throughout the event. The winners for each round can receive an award, and those prizes can be donated from organizations.
Yard Sale Host a yard sale on one of your fields. Promote the event by posting flyers around the neighborhood and posting pictures on social media of some of the items. Whatever does not sell from the day can then be given to a local charity that accepts the kinds of used items you have.
Fundraiser Ideas: A New Year!

Club Summaries This month, Aragon closed out its semester with a variety of events. On Friday, December 2nd, 2016, we sold milk tea and pizza at the school's food fair, making $280 in profit for the club. Then, on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016, we joined other San Mateo schools in returning to our adopted section of Coyote Point Park to pull out young broom seedlings. Finally, we joined other Key Clubs again and attended the service event at Kmart Holiday Shopping Program. Aragon sent 14 members to that event. In the new year, Aragon is looking forward to a garage sale, a club social, and DCON!

Club Summaries Over the past month, Carlmont Key Club has continued volunteering. We have volunteer opportunities at Barnes & Noble almost every day for members to get their hours. We also had six members attend KeyLeader in November. There were other volunteer events over the weekends, such as Breakfast with Santa, Kmart Holiday Shopping, and Brittan Acres Elementary School Boutique. Our last meeting for the first semester recently happened where we recognized members who served at least 15 hours since the beginning of the semester, we had pizza and publicized upcoming events again. We won't have another meeting until mid-January, but we look forward to next semester!

Club Summaries For November we had a lot of volunteering including the turkey trot to the run wild marathon. This month we encouraged as many members as possible to attend the December DCM and I think it was a success. We also had Fall Fest which is where the clubs at our school fundraiser by selling things. We stuck with selling chicken skewers and made $220 profit. We also had our last meeting on December 7.

During the month of December, Westmoor Key Club has not been involved in any volunteering events thus far. However, on December 23rd we do have a volunteering event partnered with the Salvation Army. We will be serving dinner. I'm not sure if this is relevant as well but we had a fundraising event for our club, in which we sold hot chocolate in mason jars.

Club Summaries In the past month, the Burlingame Key Club has participated in a variety of events. From December 2-23, we partnered with the St. Vincent de Paul charities to host the Books 4 Hope Drive at Burlingame High School. Members also volunteered for the Feed the Need food drive at Safeway, a Kmart shopping event for underprivileged children, and the Division Wide service project to make beanies for people in need. The BHS club also had a fundraiser during the Burlingame tree lighting ceremony. Over the next month, we are brainstorming more service ideas and preparing for the Kiwanis Special Games.

Club Summaries This past month El Camino Key Club got in the holiday spirit by doing some gift giving service events, starting with the Safeway Holiday Food Drive to more recently where we hosted D34N's December DCM at El Camino's cafeteria. All the proceeds from this event went to PTP (Pediatric Trauma Program), our preferred charity. Just last week we also participated in South San Francisco's annual Christmas Food Basket and Distribution Service Project. Coming up, we have some events this weekend like the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Event to raise funds for the Salvation Army as well as of course, the Division Wide Service Project. We also have some service events coming up towards the latter of the month including the Holiday Food and Toy Sorting and Distribution on the 21st and 22nd.

Aragon Food Fair
Jason Leung Aragon Key Club President
On Friday, December 2nd, 2016, Aragon Key Clubbers sold milk tea from Quickly's and pizza from Little Caesar's at our school's Fall Semester Food Fair. It was a mad rush to satisfy our many customers, with many of our members helping collect tickets and distribute food. Luckily we sold all the items, and collected (on the first count) $713, with $280.19 left for our club account. For us, the sale was a major success.

Aragon Food Fair
Kim Vo Aragon Key Club Secretary This month, Aragon High School had their annual Food Fair. This event only happens twice a year, and it's the time for clubs to fundraise and get their name out in the school. Key Club sold pizza and boba! The students always love these items because they are quick and, obviously, delicious. It was very hectic and stressful, but at the same time very fun. We also sold out! We made a profit of around $380, and our board is very grateful. I would also like to thank Richard Tang and Sylvia Young, two of our club's members, for volunteering as well! Overall, it was a great event. If other schools have something similar to this, I would definitely recommend participating!

Tree of Hope
Kevin Deng Lowell Key Club Member I had a chance to decorate origami cranes that would be placed on Christmas trees at City Hall. Other than decorating the cranes, our club had a chance to also fold the cranes made from hundreds of people and sear them so they would be fireproof. We played music while we worked and at times Christmas music to enjoy a festive feel while we worked. To top it off, we were given tasty food and drinks to keep our stomachs filled. The Tree of Hope volunteering event was a great, fun experience and would recommend others to try and volunteer for this also in the future.
Jennifer Cheung Lowell Key Club Member For Tree of Hope, we met at city hall from 9-12 to help fold origami for the Christmas tree downtown. First, we set up tables and chairs, then got to work drawing holiday themed patterns and pictures on square pieces of paper. We then folded these into paper cranes, which were later fireproofed with irons. This event was really fun and relaxing and didn't feel like work at all. It was a great way to talk to friends and give back to our city.

Tree of Hope
Andrew Wong Lowell Key Club Member As a new member of key club, I haven't been to many events. This event, Tree of Hope, I thought was quite fun, helping the people decorate the tree by drawing pictures. The drawing was especially fun, and I was able to enjoy myself by talking and having fun with my fellow key clubbers. Helping people and having fun at the same time at this event really helped me enjoy volunteering for the community.

K-mart Shopping Event
Helen Lu Aragon Key Club Member On December 10, we went to the K-Mart in Redwood City to go shopping for clothes with a child. Sheryl, Sylvia and I took an adorable four-year-old girl called Tutu and her mom around the clothing section. Everything was on sale, so we tried buying as much as we could from at least 5 cute dresses/outfits to a warm jacket and 2 pairs of boots. This was by far one of the most amazing service events that I’ve been to as it felt so nice just to see the smiling faces of Tutu and her mother when we were picking outfits for her and I’m looking forward to doing it again next year!

K-mart Shopping Event
Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member We arrived at the K-mart at roughly 7:45am and took pictures while we waited for our little buddies to show up. At around 9, we were given our buddies; most of us were assigned one buddy each, however, there were extra volunteers so the there were a few groups of 3. The little buddies came in a variety of ages; I was lucky to be assigned a boy that wasn't too young nor too old. His name was Zach, and he was a 6th grader currently attending Borel. We spent the hour and a half getting to know each other as well as buying him cool new clothing; he ended up with new shoes, a star wars jacket, and a Christmas sweater just to name a few. We had a lot of fun together in the brief period of time we had and I can't wait to do this with him again next year!

Coyote Point Cleanup
Jason Leung Aragon Key Club President Just as Aragon Key Clubbers had done throughout the year, we joined Kiwanians and other clubs in the division in clearing and weeding an adopted section of Coyote Point Park. Meeting at 9:00 am, we gorged ourselves on donuts, orange juice, and coffee before going to work. With weed wrenches and loppers, we hacked away at invasive Scotch broom plants. According to the ranger, winter is the optimal period to remove broom plants because the seedlings pop up and make for easy weeding, especially after we cleared the much larger plants in the summer. Still, as the winter rains continue, and new seedlings pop up, the club will join the K-Family in the coming months to make this section of the park broom free, and a little bit more beautiful.

Coyote Point Cleanup
Helen Lu Aragon Key Club Member On December 3rd, we went to Coyote Point Park to help remove an invasive plant species known as “broom.” Sheryl and I first used an orange clamp-like tool, which allowed us to easily remove large broom plants. However, as the day went on, we started to take turns using a pickaxe to try and chip the root of slightly smaller broom plants out, which was both fun and tiresome. We also tried pulling the broom plants out with our hands before toppling over.
Ellen Batsuuri Aragon Key Club Member
On December 3rd, many clubs from our division attended the coyote point clean up. We removed invasive plants from the area just like we did last time. I had a lot of fun meeting new people from other schools and even made a few new friends!

Safeway Food Drive
Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member Tristan, Noah, Tyler and I went to the Safeway on North Delaware St. on Saturday to help the Second Harvest Food Bank. We were given slips, each had a value of $10, that we were to hand out to all shoppers at Safeway; the slips were worth $10 each, customers that took the slip would then scan the slip as an item, and the $10 would be given to Second Harvest Food Bank. Together, we spent two hours at the two entrances at the store handing out slips to those that were generous enough to help out the efforts to feed those in need this Thanksgiving. In total, we helped raise around $450!

At the Safeway Second Harvest Food Bank Distribution, our dedication made the event possible. Stopping people and asking for donations can be an intimidating thing, but we did it. We successfully helped raise money for the second harvest food bank who in turn helps needy families during the Holiday Season. We did this event at the Safeway on Gellert (originally Pak'N Save).

Carlmont School Cleanup
Jonathan Deridal Carlmont Key Club Secretary During November 17 I hosted our school cleanup. It was a very successful and fun event where we cleaned up the school for an hour and a half. About 20 people went and we split up into groups of 3-5 and cleaned different parts of our school. It was a very satisfying event because you know that you made the place you go to school just a little bit better.

Holiday Food Baskets

Umar Patel El Camino Key Club President This was the Holiday Food Basket Packaging and Distribution. Last year we made over 300 boxes worth of goods for the needy and this year we stepped up to that challenge once again. It was a rainy day, but we didn't let the weather rain on our parade. Family and friends throughout the SSF community helped to come organize and pack all these boxes, and it was nice to meet up with some old friends.

December Division Council Meeting
Umar Patel El Camino Key Club President This was Kerwin and Christian manning the popcorn machine during our December DCM. We were very fortunate that the SSF Scavenger Co. donated this popcorn machine to our event as it made the movie night that much more genuine. A lot of people enjoyed the popcorn, again all the proceeds went to PTP. ECHS's Key Club also learned the logistics of how to run a popcorn machine which may come in handy for future events. We couldn't have made this successful without help from our Kiwanis Advisor Jack and the entire D34N Key Club community, so thank you all.

Key Leader was an amazing and influential experience. I learned a lot about servant leadership by reflecting on what qualities I value in myself and others and how that affects me when working with others. I met a lot of new people and bonded with them through our common passion for service. Despite the rain, we got to do the low ropes course which was really fun and allowed me to practice my new leadership skills. All in all, it was definitely a memorable weekend!

Carlmont Key Clubbers managed the craft tables, snow area, slides, and bouncy houses at the annual Night of Holiday Lights in San Carlos. Part of Laurel St was closed to host these fun activities. Children made paper plate wreaths and pumpkin ornaments and had fun with the live music and "snow" bubbles. The Mayor of San Carlos was also there halfway through the event to welcome all the families there.
Francis Lin Lowell Key Club Member To raise money, Lowell Key Club sold food during Lowell Open House night. We sold yummy Tandoori chicken. It was one of my first Key Club events and was lots of fun. Listening to one Key Club member shout "Get your Tandoori chicken" was definitely one of the highlights of the night. There were times where people would reject us when we asked if they wanted chicken, and I did feel a bit embarrassed at the time, but it was still lots of fun. From this event, I learned a bit about profit and advertising. I hope to go to more soon!
