Lieutenant Governor’s Message
Aloha Aqua Apes! Welcome to Quarter 4 of the term! Can you believe that 9 months of this term have already passed! With only a handful of large events remaining, the new term is about to begin! However, that does not mean this term is over by any means. Elections season is just beginning! Some quick reminders: Club elections should be held in February for the following positions: President, Vice President(s), Secretary, Treasurer, and Editor if applicable. Remember that all candidates must be dues paid members of the club, and voting delegates should also be dues paid members only. Once your club elections have been held, please email me at d34n.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com with your officer elects’ names, positions, phone numbers, and emails. In addition, February means it’s time to elect YOUR next Lieutenant Governor! Mark your calendars, because Conclave will be on Saturday, February 11th! Registration is due by February 6th, and each club may send two voting delegates (ideally non-seniors) and up to eight additional members, all dues paid. Keep checking your emails for more details about the event! Speaking of events, District Convention is rapidly approaching! This year, DCON will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Key Clubbers from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii all attend this huge event to celebrate everything we’ve done throughout the term, learn more about Key Club, and elect your new district executive officers! Please check the reflector for specific information sent out regarding registration. Early registration is due by February 22nd and late registration is due by March 13th! Please encourage all your officers and members to attend! District Convention is a wonderful way to learn more about Key Club and recruit members who may not be sure about joining. Please contact me if you have any questions :-)
See you all soon! BANANAS for service, Kelvin Yang Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor

February Service Spotlight
What is the Spotlight
on Service Program?
The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.
Event Ideas: Card Making
There are many ways in which you can help support this program, one being card-making. Get creative, and make cards for the patients. Afterward, be sure to deliver them to the children in person! You can also arrange a meeting to spend some quality time with them. Additionally, you can hold a sock-making event to create no-slip puffy paint socks.
Carnival For Kids
Plan a day and venue to have various activities and games for local children and their parents! Charge an admission fee, based on donations, and use your games to educate younger audiences. Have a booth to explain your cause.
Paint the School with Miracles Organize a community/school project and create a banner to raise awareness for the Children's Miracle Network. Members can paint elaborate murals, or everyone can contribute by adding a handprint!

February Service Spotlight
the February sosp focus is... Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Photo Contest
“Kids Do the Darndest Things” is a popular theme for the contest. Establish an entry fee and plan displays throughout your event or at a home club meeting. Allow members to vote by putting donations in corresponding jars. The winners are determined by the total amount raised in their jar.
Skate-a-thon
Ask your local skating rink for discounts or promotions to host a non-profit fundraiser! Find sponsors and individuals pledge money for the hours or laps each participant skates. Have a concession stand to raise additional funds.
Miracle Flowers Sell carnations for one dollar with a note card during holidays or special events. Secretary Day, Boss’s Day, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day and many other holidays are perfect for this Children’s miracle network fundraiser.

The past month has been quiet for our club. As we launch into the new year, Aragon is looking to hold club elections, an additional garage sale, and a club social. We're looking forward to renewing our promise to serve our home, school, and community better than ever.

Club Summaries For the month of December, Carlmont Key Club worked hard to wrap gifts at Barnes and Nobles. We also wrapped gifts at a local community center in Redwood City. There were many holiday themed service projects and we even had a couple events during our winter break. We will be having our club elections in February. We look forward to the new year!

Club Summaries In December we had free of hope where our members and the officers folded origami cranes to put it on the Christmas tree in City Hall. They also provided us coffee, water, snacks, and sandwiches which were awesome of them. Besides tree of hope, we also had run wild which is this 5k race where all the volunteers wear elf hats. It was nice to wake up in the morning to help with the race because of the view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the aesthetically pleasing fog. We also told our members that the term is coming to an end in 4 months so we are going to hold elections for officers in February.

Club Summaries This past month we said goodbye to finals and said hello to winter break. We did some Key Club bonding through various events such as officer meetings where we lightly discuss key club topics and really just hang out. We also began our STEM survey projects by interviewing people at SSF main library. We got about 40 interviews from people but still have a long way to go, so we will do these surveys a couple more times at popular sights in South San Francisco. Also, we teamed up with Adventure's Ecology Club again to help them with their garden which they are making at our school. We will have elections in early-mid February and hopefully, train the incoming officers so they can carry on the torch for Key Club here at ECHS.

Garden Clean Up
Jackie Tan El Camino Key Club Member My experience working at the ECHS garden clean up was tiring and fun as well. I met most of the officers from adventurous ecology club and became great friends. They were all nice and kind, which encouraged me to join their club! We got most work done, like creating stone steps for the garden and we were able to place 10 plants in the soil! It was an overall an enjoyable and amusing experience! I look forward to work with adventurous ecology club again sometime in the future!

Garden Clean Up
Christian Lam El Camino Key Club Member On January 14, 2017, at El Camino High our key club collaborated with The Adventurous Ecology club to fix, rebuild, and improve the garden at our school. We cleaned up the garden as it was overgrown, pulling out weeds and tilling the soil to prepare for new plants that would be put in. At the same time, we created a new path consisting of concrete blocks that would lead into the garden, providing a clean entrance way. The work performed included pulling out large areas of weeds, leveling the dirt so we could build a path and other minor fixes that improved the overall aesthetics of the garden. It was overall a fun experience working with others to restore a previously beautiful garden and the tiring labor we performed bore fruits as the garden looked fantastic after the addition of new plants, a path, and a few fixes to the area.

San Francisco Food Bank
Catherine Ke Lowell Key Club Member Division Executive Assistant The food bank was a super duper fun event. We helped pack rice with the San Francisco Food Bank that will be given out to shelters and various food pantries. We worked in an assembly with one person estimating a pound of rice in each bag, the next person making sure it is exactly 1 pound, and the last person sealing, labeling, and packaging. At the end of the day, everyone in the room packed 2300 pounds of rice! The feeling was so satisfying and made the hard work waking up in the morning worth it. I would love to do it again.

San Francisco Food Bank
Kevin Kuang Lowell Key Club Member The food bank was a different experience from other volunteering events because of the objective and people. We helped packaged food to feed families that definitely had a more positive feeling compared to passing out water to runners at marathons. The leaders of the event were more relax and were more engaged in the volunteers than the volunteering which made the event more enjoyable. Having a cause to volunteer and people making it easier to do the job are enough reasons for this to be my favorite event!

San Francisco Food Bank
Vanessa Chow Lowell Key Club Member On December 19, we volunteered at the San Francisco food bank for the first time. It was super freezing when we got there, but we were all bundled up and ready to work. Our main assignment that day was bagging rice, which required people to scoop, weigh, seal, and box the rice. There was a lot more work than I thought that went into making simple bags of rice, and I've definitely gained more of an appreciation for the food bank and what they do. Hopefully, our club can volunteer there again in the near future.

San Francisco Food Bank
Serena Tsui Lowell Key Club Member Volunteering at the San Francisco food bank taught me about the homelessness in my city and what I could do to help. I gained a huge appreciation for people who take time out of their day to do simple jobs like packing rice or moving foods to help those that do not have much. Although it was freezing inside of the building, my heart warmed up as I watched strangers join together to create individual rice packages for people that they'd probably never meet. The workers were very inspiring and enthusiastic which helped raised our spirits. The entire experience was very moving because, within a few hours, our group was able to package foods that would be able to feed hundreds of families.

Hot Chocolate Marathon
Nancy Liu Lowell Key Club Member The hot chocolate run is a famous run in SF where runners receive snacks including hot chocolate at the finish line. It is a 5k/15k run and Key Club was stationed at the 3rd-mile water station, so we either handed out water or cheered on the runners. My position was cheering on the runners, which was fun even though it was storming and raining. The runners still prospered and it was nice to work together with the other members to cheer them on. The experience was unique because throughout the events I have volunteered at for Key Club, the weather had not been this harsh, but the fact that we made it through matters the most.

Hot Chocolate Marathon
Kevin Deng Lowell Key Club Member The Hot Chocolate event was a new unique experience due to the intense rain. Despite being soaked, we were still committed to cheering on the runners. It was a lot more fun cheering them on because they were running in the rain and needed the extra motivation. At the end of race, we were rewarded with welldeserved hot chocolate. The event was as spirited and as exciting rain or shine.

Sarah Mo Zhen Lowell Key Club Member
My experience at this year's hot chocolate run was different from the previous years. The marathon this year continued whether it was rain or shine. Although I got soaked along with the other members, we still cheered on the runners. I really appreciated some runners thanking us for being there in undesirable conditions.

Breakfast with Santa
Isabella Mattioli Carlmont Key Club Member On December 10, I did the “Breakfast with Santa” event with Key Club, at the San Carlos Community Center. In summary, the event was a holidaythemed breakfast, with many activities, such as pictures with Santa, a photo booth, and crafts. My role was at the photo booth. I helped connect the printer and organize all of the technological aspects. Then, I helped each family take pictures and print them out. Other members worked at the craft table, where they helped children with small art projects. At the end, we helped clean up, and they fed us all breakfast. This was definitely one of my favorite events with Key Club, and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it.

Family Dog Rescue

Nelson Poon Westmoor SPCA Club President
Westmoor’s SPCA Club is dedicated to teaching students about the different ways to help the community, whether it's by volunteering at Family Dog Rescue or helping out at Stow Lake for the Habitats for SF Butterflies. What is important is that people learn about the importance of creating a positive environment for likeminded students that love being part of a true community. Every single week, members of our club go volunteer at various places. For instance, our members go to Stow Lake every month to help repopulate the native butterfly population so that we can create a thriving ecosystem.
