Lieutenant Governor’s Message

Aloha Aqua Apes! We are now only one month away from the end of the term! To everyone who has been reading my messages in the newsletter throughout the term, thank you. Email me (d34n.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com) with your name, club, and the favorite moment this term to get a prize at the end of year banquet! However, even though we are rapidly nearing the end of this term, remember to keep doing service - finish strong! Don’t let a weak final month detract from all the hard work you’ve put in for the rest of the term. You can always reach out to me if you need advice or just someone to talk to, but now there’s also someone else! Be sure to congratulate your 2017-2018 Lieutenant Governor...Kayla Tai! In this final month, many clubs are probably finishing up elections and registration for District Convention (will we see YOU there?). But don’t forget there are still many opportunities for service! Ask your officers to attend and we may still reach our goal of 10,000 service hours! Also, you can attend our fundraiser Mr. Key Club on March 4th :) It’ll be a lot of fun and all proceeds will go to the Pediatric Trauma Program. To all the seniors, I encourage you to take advantage of your final months in Key Club and walk away with no regrets. To everyone else who still has time in Key Club, actively search out more ways to become more involved! Even if you lost an election, there are countless other ways to become involved in the organization; you can apply for a Division Leadership Team position, become an appointed officer in your club, apply for a district chair/coordinator position, or just be a standout member (there is no such thing as “just” a member). Serving this amazing division has been one of the greatest honors of my life and I thank you all for helping make this term great. Let’s finish this term strong! I hope to see you all at District Convention! Please contact me if you have any questions :-)

See you all soon! BANANAS for service, Kelvin Yang Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor

March Service Spotlight

What is the Spotlight

on Service Program?

The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.

Event Ideas: Fountain Donations Contact your local mall or public park services to see if you can clean out their fountains for donations! From the money you collect, you will be able to make a donation to the March of Dimes!

Wonder Walk March of Dimes hosts different events all over the nation! Look on the March of Dimes Website for volunteer opportunities near you.

Car Wash You will need plenty of volunteers, supplies and a large space to host a car wash. Schools are popular locations for these events. Get student-volunteers, to wash cars. Ask members of the community to participate in the car wash on a donation-basis. At the end of the day, you’ll have nice clean cars and a generous donation for March of Dimes.

Coin Weigh-In Competitions

Compete against other departments at work, during class, or at school to see who can collect the most coins in terms of weight. Have a competition to guess the weight of the winning container of coins before the final weigh in.

Sales for Donations

Hold a bake, craft, or rummage sale at school or a community center. Repurpose your second-hand items or delicious baked goods at cheap prices to fundraise donations for the March of Dimes.

Conduct a Mile of Dimes Get together with volunteers and lay out a pathway with pennies! Laying down pennies will bring awareness of March of Dimes and add shine to your community.

Club Summaries

Aragon's doing well. We sent 7 members (including D34N's LTG, and an LTG Candidate) and 5 advisors to Conclave. Our club is so proud of LtG. Elect Kayla Tai, and is looking forward to her term! We've also been planning DCON; we already have at least 11 people interested. Lastly, we're looking forward to doing some good service to close out the year, with a new opportunity with the Kings Recreation Center.

Club Summaries For the month of February, Carlmont Key Club is going to have club officer elections and focus on promoting District Convention. There are few service events this month which is unfortunate, but we still have a lot going on. One thing we're excited for is that we have two guest speakers coming to our lunch meetings. One is Kiwanian Martin Mansmann and the other is a representative from the Grateful Garments Project. We are also preparing for our movie night on the first Saturday of March.

Club Summaries In January, we had the hot chocolate run which was unorganized because of some rain. We also started talking about elections for officers and also DCON as it is around the corner. We are currently trying to plan a bake sale to fundraise for our club. This past weekend we also had the Kaiser Permanente marathon and it was the best volunteering because we got free medals and snacks.

LOWELL

Dion Chung Lowell Key Club President

This month we gathered intern forms and have planned 3 volunteering events for the month of February. February 3rd for the Montana Mountain Trail Run, February 20th for the Glide Soup Kitchen, and February 21st for the SF Food Bank. For the trail run, we would be helping people check in and then work at the finish line. For the Glide Soup Kitchen, we would take the Bart early in the morning to serve food. And for the SF Food Bank, we will be packaging food.

Club Summaries This past month El Camino Key Club focused on DCON preparation. We just recently finished the registration and will have 5 members attending the event this year, which is the same number as last year. We had 5 members (who are now officer-elects) attend Conclave where they learned about how Key Club runs at a division and district level and this was key in opening their eyes to see how Key Club extends beyond just our school. As mentioned, we recently had our club elections which were a success. This upcoming Saturday we are volunteering at the SSF Scavenger to help clean up their shoreline and the following Saturday we will have a beach clean-up at Ocean Beach. We are also trying to have a Pie an Officer fundraiser to raise money for PTP in the next month or two.

Our club participated in three events last month and our vice president attended the January DCM. In addition, a couple of our members took part in the Pacific Beach Cleanup. Towards the end of the month, we sold homemade cookies and pecan pie bars at our food sale which raised $59.

Club Summaries The club of South San Francisco hasn't been able to do much so far in February due to certain circumstances at our school we couldn't hold a club meeting for the past two weeks but things are looking up and we hope to end our year off strong. Along with our Jamba Juice fundraiser cards, we plan to do restaurant takeovers and continue to provide service projects every week for our members.

Aragon Club Social

Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member The Club Social was a great way to bond with fellow Key Clubbers. I had a great time hanging out with my friends; we played basketball, played games and ate great Korean BBQ. I look forward to future Club Socials where I get to strengthen our relationships within the club. Hopefully next time someone will record it so I can remember how much fun I had.

Aragon Club Social

Alex Ma Aragon Key Club Member On February 4, 2017, our club held our annual club social at Beresford Park. Planning for this event was really difficult as finding a weekend where a lot of our club members were free was not easy. But we managed to get this event off and it was amazing. We put some money aside from our club budget to help fund the event and our Vice President Max Liu cooked some amazing Korean Barbeque and chicken. The social was a potluck style event and there was a plethora of food. Overall, I had a great time hanging out with my friends, playing basketball and eating good food. Hopefully, our Key Club will have an equally exciting and fun club social!

Second Harvest Food Bank

Belinda Yu Carlmont Key Club Vice President At Second Harvest Food Bank in San Carlos, 6 Carlmont Key Clubbers, Kiwanian Steve, and I packed dozens of cardboard boxes with sweet and salty food from Nabisco. This included hundreds of units of Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Wheat Thins, and Gingersnaps. I hadn't volunteered there for awhile so it felt great to be back. I appreciate the volunteers for spending their Wednesday night to help feed the less fortunate. The food will be distributed to low-income and homeless communities.

Second Harvest Food Bank

Isabella Mattioli Carlmont Key Club Member On Wednesday, February 7, I volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank with Key Club. We packaged nine-ten pounds of sweet or salty food into boxes that were distributed to other food suppliers. It felt great to help feed others who are not as fortunate as I am, and I am looking forward to volunteering there again.

Kaiser Half Marathon

Sarah Mo Zhen Lowell Key Club Member At the Kaiser marathon this year, we distributed medals to the runners at the finish line! Some of the runners were really nice. I felt like runners appreciated me taking time out of my life to help out whenever the runners thanked me. I also enjoyed the spirit and enthusiasm people had there. A runner even asked to take a picture with me!

Serendipity Run

Erika Kutuzov Aragon Key Club Member At the Serendipity Run, Sylvia and I went to the registration table and started handing out shirts to the people who were signing in. Then we went towards the finish line and started to cheer on the people who were finishing the race. It was a fun experience despite the fact that the manager guy forgot we were there.

Serendipity Run

Sylvia Young Aragon Key Club Member To kick off the start of a new year, Aragon Key Club participated in the second annual Serendipity Run on January 21, hosted by Serendipity Elementary School at Seal Point Park. After helping to take count and keep track of the attendees, we handed out shirts for the event to parents, children, and members of the community. Following the start of the 5k, we cheered for the runners and stood by to guide them. With such a big group of participants in the run, Serendipity was able to raise a large amount of money for the school.

Conclave

Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member Conclave was much more fun than I originally thought it was going to be. I wasn't too sure what would happen, but all I expected was to hear some speeches and vote. However, my guess was far from the truth. I got to meet many new people from different divisions and bond more with my friends in our division. Additionally, the reflection conversation was very touching; I never thought that Key Club meant so much to people that they would cry when discussing their fondest recollections.

Conclave

Umar Patel El Camino Key Club President All sophomores attended Conclave 2017 from El Camino’s Key Club and for most of them, it was the first time ever experiencing Key Club at a division or district level. It opened their eyes to how high school students could change the world and inspired them to get more involved in Key Club beyond our school level.
