Lieutenant Governor’s Message
Aloha Aqua Apes! A couple months ago, District Convention marked the start of a new term with newly elected officers. Now, school is almost over, and everyone is getting ready to enjoy a nice and relaxing summer break. However, the service does not end with the school year; in fact, we have plenty of events coming up and work to do throughout summer! Summer is the best time to get some planning, bonding, and tasks done since there is less school work to do. I would strongly suggest for boards to get together to create an annual plan (if you have not done so already), bond with your club, and get ahead on all the work you will be completing throughout the school year. Summer opens up a lot of time to plan events, promote conferences, and raise money for preferred charities. Make use of the time you have during summer break, but do not forget to enjoy it as well. In addition to planning, there are division-wide events that will be held throughout summer including the Key Club Training Conference in June. This event is required for all board members to attend and strongly encouraged for members. Key Clubbers will learn more background about Key Club, valuable skills to help with their term, and give an opportunity to open up their eyes to the entity of Key Club. Mark your calendars now! It is also the perfect time to start raising money for our preferred charities and plan events with other clubs within the division. Remember, each club is expected to plan at least one inter club event throughout the term. Beach cleanups, garage sales, and organized socials are all great events to hold during the summer. Keep a look out for more events, updates, and information! There will be many opportunities to be recognized here in the newsletter, on the website, and at DCM’s. Check out our many resources listed in the “Staying Updated” page to get the latest news. Please contact me if you have any questions :-) See you all soon! With the spirit of service, Kayla Tai Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor

What is the Spotlight
on Service Program?
The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.
Event Ideas: Clean Ups
Encourage community service by hosting clean-ups of public areas. Parks, beaches, and community centers are a great place to start to find environments that need your help to restore.
Outdoor Club Socials
Get outside and promote activity to benefit heath and safety. Invite the members you serve or other clubs to enjoy a Key Club Olympics, relay races, or a friendly sports tournament. Promote a healthy lifestyle through a healthy potluck!
Support and Spread our Preferred Charities Educate your community and host events in order to spread our Preferred Charities. The Pediatric Trauma Program, Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes, and the Eliminate Project all focus on the importance of health and safety. Raise awareness and have fun hosting themed events and educational presentations!

Food and Supply Drives
Set up a drive to gather personal health products and food. Contact a local community center, shelter, or bank to donate these essentials to make a difference locally.

Club Summaries This month, we focused most of our time on settling officers into their positions and planning our first fundraiser. After weeks of discussion, we decided that we would host a donut fundraiser within the first month of school. We decided on many of the details for this fundraiser, from the time and date to the specific pricing and other details. After speaking with Mr. Gerry Weiss and Mr. Andy Block, we have a better idea of what to expect during this term. Hopefully, this months meetings and decisions will help us achieve great things as a club in the coming year.

For this month, Westmoor Key Club has not been as active due to the testing going on, ??? and lack of communication. After we ended our meetings for the year in early May, not many of the members have Tammy Chao signed up for the volunteering Westmoor Key Club events on our website. However, the Westmoor Key Club officers co-President have been discussing plans for next year about having a remind account to send out texts to all the key club members about the events. Furthermore, we been brainstorming ideas for Westmoor Westmoor have a project in the upcoming year.

Club Summaries This past month ECHS’s Key Club had an end of the term bonding day at the beach. We spent the afternoon cleaning up the beach, making smores, and trying to develop more fundraisers. In the past couple of weeks, we have been planning to do a fundraiser at our school for the senior graduation, where we will be selling T-Pumps and raising money for the Pediatric Trauma Program. Just this past Monday we also gave out awards to members who exhibited outstanding service and were recognized for astounding Key Club involvement throughout the past term. Also, last week we attended Kiwanis EL CAMINO Special Games. Not only did we help make many kids’ day by cheering them on and helping them through an assortment of fun, Olympicstyle games, but I truly believe we ourselves learned the real meaning of what service and enhancing our communities really is. By helping them enjoy this one day, which was made just for them, we are able to make a significant positive impact on their lives.

Hillsdale has been??? reorganizing itself this month. Jobs and roles are being assigned to officers and the president is emphasizing the importance of weekly Nina Feliciano club meetings and playing a more active role in social media. Overall, Hillsdale Hillsdale Club is slowly recovering Key from its previous term and is ready to be more active in the Kiwanis family. In the co-President upcoming months, new rules and delegations will be delivered to the club in an effort of renewing its credibility as a member of Kiwanis. Also, food fair is coming for Hillsdale High School and Hillsdale is planning on selling a variety of goods to fundraise.

New Board Introductions In this month of April, South City has transitioned well into our new club board. We’ve had several volunteer opportunities for our members such as the March for Babies and the Ombudsman Brunch. We are also preparing for Special Games! We’ve just begun planning for our DCM this coming September and are working on recruitment for the next school year. Since our current faculty advisor is retiring, we have found two new teachers who are willing to be our advisors next year. We also got our club to eat lemons to spread SOUTH SAN awareness for project eliminate. Overall, the month of FRANCISCO April has been a good one.

March for Babies
Patrick Choi South San Francisco Key Club Co-Vice President South City had six volunteers at the March for Babies who all arrived at around 6 AM. We were in charge of setting up chairs and tables up until around 7 AM. We then broke out to fill different roles such as handing out pom-poms or being in charge of face-painting while the marchers began to arrive. Once the march began we cheered for them by the entrance and resumed cheering when they came back a few hours later. Volunteers enjoyed dancing to music which really helped liven up the atmosphere of the entire event. During the times when the marchers were away walking, most volunteers were congregated by the kid's area and socializing while playing with toys. Overall there was a really relaxed and festive environment that made the day more enjoyable. At around 12 PM, volunteers began stacking up chairs and throwing away garbage, and many left around 1 PM.

March for Babies
Isabella Mattioli Carlmont Co-Vice President On Saturday, April 29, I woke up at 5 am and left to volunteer at March for Babies. For many people, that is way too early on a Saturday, but I felt the need to help the causes that March of Dimes benefits, like preemies and babies with birth defects. At the event, I was the facilitator of the volunteers and assigned jobs for everyone to set up. During the march, I face painted many kids who were there to support the cause. I am very glad I went out to participate because I saw the people who benefitted from this fundraising, and also others who had experienced loss and return to help other families. One instance was at the butterfly garden, where families could write the name of who they were marching for. One woman I saw had lost her baby, and this was very emotional for her. This made me truly aware of the babies' lives that were at risk, and how I volunteered really made a difference.

March for Babies
Belinda Yu Carlmont Key Club Member Beginning at sunrise, the volunteers and I helped assemble cardboard waste boxes and set up chairs at tables. While assembling, I met a few wonderful SFSU Circle K members that were kind and welcoming. During the event, I helped manage a table where kids could come to build their imagination with play-doh and entertain themselves. As the participants returned from the walk, we welcomed them back with encouragement cheerfully. Every person and team had a story, whether they lost a loved one to prematurity or were themselves a premature baby. Everyone gathered to provide support for others who needed it. To close the event, we carried dozens of chairs and rolled tables back in place. Not to mention, we endured the sweltering afternoon heat. While volunteering at this event was a real workout and resulted in a sunburn, I had a pleasure meeting other volunteers and learning about the impact of prematurity amongst families.

Ombudsman
Patrick Choi South San Francisco Key Club CoVice President South City brought 4 volunteers to the Ombudsman Event in San Mateo on April 30th, 2017. Volunteers were in charge of running a silent auction table and handing out name tags. We collaborated with three other volunteers from Aragon. The event was a formal brunch that featured some familiar faces such as Scott Wiener and Vic Lee which was exciting. The event started at around 10 AM and ended at 2 PM.

Kiwanis Show
Belinda Yu Carlmont Key Club Member Both Notre Dame and Carlmont Key Clubbers came to help run the production of "Motown and More" hosted by San Carlos Kiwanis. Alongside a few Kiwanians, we helped manage the concessions station, where we sold chips, candy, soda, and water. We also displayed a tip jar to collect donations for the Eliminate Project and for our club. Before the show, we even had the opportunity to help put makeup on the actors and actresses. It was great to see so many hardworking Kiwanians and community members gathered to showcase an amazing show.

Relay for Life
Jonathan Yabut South San Francisco Key Club Member Relay for Life was an eye opening experience! Even though there were only two volunteers, our spirit, enthusiasm, and love for helping the community made up for it. We held the silent auctions and seeing all the people bid for the awesome donations enriched my heart. There were many cool performances and I encourage everyone to do it the next time they have a chance!

Alta Loma Middle School Musical
Patrick Choi South San Francisco Key Club Co-Vice President On April 20th and 28th, several members volunteered at Alta Loma Middle School's Musical "Oz". We arrived around 4:00 pm and worked with students at Alta Loma who were also helping. Volunteers helped hand out food to the performers as well as set up concession stands, tables, etc. Once the doors opened, we had different tasks such as selling t-shirts and tickets. We got to watch the musical and after it finished, we all helped put away chairs and tables. We left this fun event at around 9:00 pm.

Special Games
Ellen Batsuuri Aragon Key Club Member This was my first year at Special Games and I was super excited about it because I've heard so many good things about this event from others. Although going to special games meant missing school it was worth it to see all the smiles on the kid's faces. When we got there at 8 am we quickly checked in and immediately started to help set up. We then cheered the athletes on when the parade began. After the parade, we rounded up our group of about 5-10 athletes and started the first event. We took the athletes around to as many events they wanted to do. My athletes loved to run so we went to all the running events such as the 100, 50, 25, and 10-meter dash. After all the athletes were finished participating we started to help clean up and then we ate lunch together. This is by far one of my favorite and most memorable events this term. I'm already looking forward to next years Special Games!

Special Games
Belinda Yu Carlmont Key Club Member Special Games is the one day kids with physical disabilities or special needs gather by the hundreds to participate in Olympic-like activities to be recognized for their efforts through encouragement and ribbons. Last time, I led a group of parents and their children to the stations. So this year I decided to help manage the Slalom station alongside IP President Hannah this year. To set up the area, we used chalk to draw the start line, trail, and finish line. During the activity, I encouraged the participants towards the finish line while using a stopwatch to mimic a timer in a real race. Some of the kids ran quickly, some were in wheelchairs with the aid of their parent, and some sprinted to the endpoint without following the trail. Each one of these students who attended is unique individuals with bright personalities. I hope they all the parents and kids who attended had a fun and memorable day!

Hawaiian Night
Jesse Salumbides South San Francisco Key Club Treasurer On May 6th, the South San Francisco High School key club participated in the setup of key club’s Hawaiian night. Members of the club arrived at the Scavenger building around 9 am and worked till noon. The club helped set up the entrance of the area to the main room and to the dining room. The staff members gave us boxes of decorations and we were given permission to decorate as see fit. We decorated the area with bright lights, bright colors, and my personal favorite, a large parakeet toy. We were working on the main room for an hour and a half and then proceeded to work on the dining room for an hour and a half. After this, the members of the club left around 12 pm.
