Happy June, Everyone! My name is Kaelyn, and I will be serving as your 2021-2022 Division Newsletter Editor! I am a rising senior at Mills High School and also serve as the President of Mills Key Club. Sadly, I have not met many of you guys in person due to COVID-19, but you may have seen me at some previous division-wide service events that I helped coordinate, such as the Cranes For A Cure event last May or the Breast Cancer Awareness event back in October. Hopefully, I’ll get to meet you guys next school year or perhaps at the upcoming banquet! A few things about me: I am currently obsessed with Olivia Rodrigo’s “SOUR” album, I am really into MBTI personality types/psychological type theory, and I love to do service (duh)! Throughout this past year, I have faced many hardships, both mentally and physically. I have constantly felt stressed about unknown, looming deadlines--all impossible to identify--and anxious about what this pandemic meant for my future. But looking back, I realized that those struggles planted seeds of perseverance which led to clarity in who I was and who I would like to become. These seeds, nurtured by this amazing Key Club community, continue to grow today. I know all of you have had difficult times this year, but I hope you know that Key Club will always be a place where you can find empathy and be supported in your journey of self-discovery. It's a safe and inclusive space for all! Please feel free to reach out to me for anything :) I hope you all have a restful and memorable summer!

Love,

Kaelyn Fung

Aloha Aqua Apes! Welcome to the first newsletter done by our newsletter editor, Kaelyn Fung! Can you believe it's June already? I'm so proud of you all for getting through this tough school year and past term and I hope everyone's finals and AP exams went well. There have been so many challenges that we had to overcome and our division has still managed to flourish! You all definitely deserve to reward yourselves with some relaxation and fun times this summer! Our division and region have so many exciting things planned for this summer including Banquet, our annual Key Club Training Conference, game nights, and so much more! Make sure to stay up-to-date with the newsletter and emails to know what's going on and don't miss an event! Since Key Club is year round, we will still be having events and meetings. As a club, you can still hold club meetings and events too, so keep on serving and being active throughout the summer! I can't wait to eventually see you all in-person and not just through a zoom screen! In-person events won't begin until around August, but considering how much we were able to accomplish during an entire term online, I have no doubt we will continue to thrive in these next few months! I can already tell this is going to be an amazing term with you guys <3 Feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions, comments, concerns, or want to talk about anything like how Loki starts streaming June 7th!!

Thanks,

Courtney Tai

I'm a rising senior at Lowell High School and I'm also serving as their Vice President of Public Relations. A few random things about myself are that I love cats, I average 7-10 boba drinks a month, and I enjoy playing games such as Genshin Impact and Stardew Valley. I've been in Key Club since my freshman year and I am extremely excited to finish off my high school experience with you all! I look forward to seeing everyone soon, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us :D

This DCM was the very first of the term, led by our lieutenant governor Courtney! As ever, we started with a simple icebreaker and the pledge before updates from each club in the division. Next, we moved onto old business and the standings for banana points as the term had ended. As for the service portion of the DCM, we made cards for the hospital workers at the Dominican hospital. These included various messages of encouragement and gratitude as vaccines were rolled out. The cards would be put up in the faculty room to be read and we ended the event with our customary zoom pictures!

10 . This was the first Division Council Meeting of the term as well as a service event. The meeting started off with the new leadership of each school describing the latest accomplishments and events of their clubs. Then, recognition for banana points, overall participation, member of the month, and more was announced. It was interesting to see what each club has been up to this month. After the DCM wrapped up, we moved on to the service event, which was making cards for the workers at Dominican Hospital. Creating the cards was lots of fun, since we had the freedom to decorate and make them as creative and colorful as we wanted. It was also nice knowing that the cards were for a great cause, as healthcare workers are essential to our community and are probably some of the people who most need support in these times. After the cards were done, we took a quick group picture with everyone’s creations, and that was the end of the event. Both the DCM and the service event went very well overall! Swaraali Save

During our first DCM of the term, hosted by Aragon and San Mateo. We had a service portion where we made cards for workers and patients at Dominican Hospital. I drew a few monkeys to represent us Aqua Apes and wrote messages on my cards! The cards were said to be posted on a bulletin for workers to see so I hope our cards make their days every time they walk by and inspire them to keep pushing through these hard times! This event was fun and I hope to do this again!

Origami Division-Wide Service Event On Friday, May 7th, key clubbers from d34n came together to one of the first division events for the Peace Cranes division-wide service event. We spent the hour folding cranes that would help the victims of the bombings in Japan. Courtney, our new LTG, taught us how to fold the cranes through a YouTube video, and for the rest of the hour we just chilled and folded cranes to some music. At the end of the event, we sent them off in the mail and discussed upcoming events. I always love the origami projects we do!

12 . Peace Cranes was a virtual event, where key clubbers from our division created origami cranes for the Children's Peace Monument. The monument was built to honor the children who were affected by the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. Although I've had some experience creating origami cranes, they were a bit tricky to make at first. I had a lot of fun creating my cranes as I added little twists to give them some variety. Also the satisfaction of finally getting the folds down after numerous tries was very worth the failed attempts. I'm very happy to know that the time I spent creating these cranes would be for a good cause! The host of the event, Courtney Tai, created a very friendly and peaceful environment to work in, allowing me to focus on the complicated folds of the cranes and enjoy the music at the same time!

Guillermo Mendoza Carlmont Peace Cranes was a division event led by our lieutenant governor, Courtney. The main focus of this event was to honor children who have suffered from the effects of atomic bombs. The cranes that we make are sent to the Children’s Peace Monument in Japan. The monument is inspired by Sadako Sasaki who folded cranes in hopes that it will help her recover from leukemia. Folding cranes were challenging at first, but it was relaxing as time went on. This event brought me great joy because knowing that we can make an impact overseas was heartwarming.

Aragon Hillsdale & Carlmont On Monday, April 12, Aragon, Carlmont, and Hillsdale hosted a bookmark-making interclub for the Younique Foundation. The Younique Foundation helps women who were victims of sexual abuse with recovery by providing healing services, support groups, and educational retreats. Attendees decorated bookmarks from a provided template, and the resulting products will be used in the notebooks the women in the program receive upon their first day of the educational retreat. My personal favorite part about this event was the Dicebreaker--an icebreaker, but there was an activity for each number on the dice. I thought it was a really cool way to get to know the other members and attendees.

Lina Saleh Carlmont

The interclub event with Carlmont and Hillsdale was a lot of fun. We made bookmark for sexual abuse survivors. For the bookmarks we followed a template given by the organization and we were able to color them ourselves. Many of the members were active in the chat and we were able to listen to music while working. Overall I thought the interclub was a lot of fun.

Of The Month Angella is a new member and she has been assisting service projects and club meetings consistently. She recently attended her first Division Wide Service Project and I believe that she always goes above and beyond and has a passion for service. She is just a freshman, and I know she has a big vision for key club in the future, as her goal is to run for a spot on the officer board. She also excels in other extracurriculars, for example, being recently elected as Class of 2024 Vice President and JSA Secretary + Treasurer. Our home club recently elected her as our club member of the month and we believe she deserves to be Division Member of the Month.

Angella Ferrer

Of The Month Alekz has been an amazing officer this past month as well as the previous month. Not only does he do his officer job well, he goes above and beyond by volunteering to help make graphics and meeting slides. He takes initiative to be more involved in the club and is always engaged at meetings and service events.

Of The Month

Romie Shield

We mistakenly planned to have a board meeting on mother’s day and regardless of this she attended. We wanted to recognize her and appreciate that she’s so attentive to the club. She’s also been present at so many division events and it’s always a pleasure to see and talk to her!

Of The Month This club has taken such initiative during this chaotic month and have planned multiple events for our division without my asking or anything and they did a great job doing so on their own. I’m grateful for such a strong and capable club like them and our division wouldn’t be the same without their hardworking board, members, and advisors.

Burlingame

At Burlingame High School Key Club, we have been primarily focusing on transitioning from old officers to new officers and training the new officers, however, we are still working on finding a vice president and treasurer. We also have been having our club meetings every other week and just had our first meeting hosted by our new officer board! Overall, the transition has been smooth and the new officers are excited for the new term!

El Camino

In April, El Camino transitioned into the new 2021-2022 Key Club term. All the newly elected officers were installed. A good number of us went to DCON and had a lot of fun. Afterwards, all the officers went to the Officer Training Conference (OTC). At OTC, the officers continued and furthered their officer training process. Since the school year is coming to close, our club is planning to hold an end-of-the-year celebration where we’ll watch movies, play video games, and just chat. Hopefully, it’ll be the perfect way to end off this crazy school year.

Hillsdale

Over this past month, we had members and officers attend events such as the April DCM and the Officer Training Conference 2021. We transitioned our new officer board into doing their assigned duties. Our club has set goals and devised plans to accomplish said goals for the upcoming term. Currently, we are working on organizing a schedule to provide information to our members, while also discussing how to keep our club engaged over the summer.

Lowell

During the month of April, Lowell Key Club has been going through transitions and preparing for the exciting new term. Officers and members attended our first ever virtual DCON where officers as well as our club received numerous awards. Our IP officers individually trained our new officers, the new board set goals for the new term, and our new officers attended the division Officer Training Conference. We hosted our first club service event, Cardz for Kidz, where we made cards for children and elders and members attended both division service events, Cards for Dominican Hospital and Peace Cranes. Our officers continue to attend weekly meetings with our Kiwanis sponsor Sheila and are currently planning an interclub event for May.

Mills This month Mills Key Club has focused on board teamwork and training. We’ve had frequent board meetings and just had our last general meeting. Our members have attended Division events, such as Peace Cranes and the April DCM, and have participated in club events, like our Teacher Appreciation Week & Mental Health Awareness Month independent projects. We have established new systems of task management that we learned from the OTC that have worked out quite well, so far. One of our officers are running for a DLT position, as well! We are excited for the upcoming summer events when more of our members will be free to attend service events, especially now that things are opening up again for in-person opportunities. We’re currently planning out logistics for next school year and plan to attend the May DCM, KCTC, and more!

DNE CHALLENGE: What is a book, show, or movie that you highly recommend?

Notre Dame This month has been quite hectic with getting our new board completely settled. At this point, our new board is running smoothly and our general meetings are going well. A notable event was our general meeting on April 22nd. We partnered with our school's Earth Day Committee to host a service event that also honors our planet/Earth Day, which was open to our entire school. We have a couple of people running for DLT and we have decided to start an internship program to get members more involved; we have been focusing a lot on service so we've decided to put more attention towards leadership. We can't wait for the DLT announcements and banquet!

Sequoia For the month of April, Sequoia's Key Club helped the Second Harvest at a food distribution to families by putting boxes of food into their cars and writing down their information. Sequoia's Key Club did a cleanup at Red Morton Park by digging up unwanted weeds near the Magical Bridge Playground.

Westmoor For the past month, our officers have been adjusting to their new roles. We have held two general meetings. One meeting contained a social activity, and the other contained a service activity (UNICEF Math Games for Good Challenge). We are working and hoping to see an increase in member participation as we attempt to get underclassmen to join our club. All of our officers attended both DCMs hosted by Division 34 North and the Kiwanis Club, as well as OTC. Due to it being testing season, we have decided to have one more board and general meeting for this academic year. So far, the new term is going as expected, but we still have work to do. We are looking forward to what is to come.
