Lieutenant Governor’s Message
Aloha Aqua Apes! Summer is officially underway! What are you doing? My best advice to you is to take advantage of the time you have now to make your life easier later. For those incoming seniors, start brainstorming those college essays now, so you can relax a little when school starts again. Go find a job or start on summer homework; however, never forget to keep doing service and giving back. Key Club is just one of many ways you can give back to your community. If you’ve been sleeping in every day until noon and don’t know what to do, ask your club officers for some local service events! Although school may be out, service never ends. I highly recommend that all clubs take a day or two to plan out the rest of the term; whether you want to have a service project every weekend or a fundraiser once a month, take the time to map it out now to save you time and stress later on during the school year. Key Club Training Conference may be over, but Key Club continues on! Remember the July Spotlight on Service Program is “Go Outdoors!” It holds infinite possibilities: go clean up your local park or beach, plan a club/division Olympics event, participate in Relay for Life. If you or your club has any questions, please contact me and I can help you out! Also, I want to stress time and time again the importance of logging all of your service hours and fundraising with your club secretary. The Monthly Report Form they compile is the only way we can record all of your hard work! A LOT is going on right now in our division. The T-Shirt contest is officially released, spirit gear survey is out, and task coordinator applications are underway. Your participation is what keeps Division 34 North strong! Please never hesitate to reach out to me or any of the members of the Division Leadership Team if you have any questions or concerns! I can be reached via email at d34n.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com or by phone at 650-703-6812. BANANAS for service, Kelvin Yang Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor

July Service Spotlight
What is the Spotlight
on Service Program?
The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.
Fundraising Ideas: Go Outdoors Dance A classic social and a night of adventure and fun - a Key Club dance is a surefire way of raising some funds while remaining cohesive with the monthly theme of Go Outdoors and exercising.
Walk-a-Thon Host your own walk-a-thon with donations or scholarships/ pledges for people to walk! Reserve your local high school track or ask your advisors or Kiwanis on how you would go about reserving nature trails or parks.
Club/Division Olympic Have a friendly competition within your club or division by hosting Summer Olympics! Organize between your clubs multiple athletic events. Ask your advisors to handle entrance fees for Key Clubbers and family members. Donate the money to PTP, Eliminate Project, or any of the following preferred charities: Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes, or UNICEF.

July Service Spotlight
the july sosp focus is...
GO OUTDOORS! Nature Clean Ups Set up a service event focusing on beautifying the outdoors for the members in the community to enjoy! Partner up with local recreational centers to plan clean ups at beaches, parks, and gardens!
Relay for Life Relay for Life is an overnight walk in teams of 10-15 to remember and fundraise for the American Cancer Society. Contact your local American Cancer Society office or call 1-800-227-2345 for more information to set up a time to volunteer.
Service Event Ideas: Why
Go Outdoors?
A growing epidemic of global obesity is furthered by the development of phones, games, and social media. In order to encourage our Key Clubbers to perpetuate a healthier lifestyle, the CNH District provides an incentive for us Key Clubbers to support service through outdoor activities with our home, school, and community!

Tour de Cure
Tour Carlmont Celeste Hsu Tour de Cure was an inspiring experience for me. As I helped prepare and set out food for the participating riders, I was amazed at how friendly and dedicated the riders were. Many of the riders were designated “Red Riders, who were participants who were biking with Diabetes. I was proud to be a contributor to this great ride, and they all were appreciative of us not only providing great food, but also our cheerleading! They could not get enough of our cowbell-ringing! I definitely look forward to seeing this event happen again next year!

This was my third time volunteering at Tour de Cure, one of my favorite events. Its purpose is to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Our Kiwanians provided healthy snacks for the cyclists, including employees from the Google and Cisco team. The bikers were fun to talk to and appreciated our support. The volunteers and I helped prepare oranges, potatoes, trail mix, and PBJ sandwiches. We also cheered on the cyclists as they passed by and welcomed those who entered with our enthusiasm and a cowbell! Region 17 | Official Division 34 North Newsletter | 13
San Carlos Barbecue
Hannah Higdon Carlmont Every year Kiwanis of San Carlos fundraises at Hometown Days. We (Carlmont Key Club) help prepare and serve alongside Kiwanians. We start by setting up tables and putting covers over all of them. Once people start coming we helped serve the customers the hot dogs. Some of us helped sell drinks, others prepared plates and set up the hot dog buns. It was really fun serving alongside our parent Kiwanis. This was one of their big fundraisers so it was nice knowing that we could help them when they always help us. 14 | Official Division 34 North Newsletter | Region 17

Senior Candy Leis

Asst. Secretary
Congrats to anyone who recently graduated!! To show our gratitude to our graduating Key Clubbers, Carlmont Key Club made candy leis. This service project was lots of fun for me to help with because I got to meet some new members, saw other members having fun and laughing with each other, as well as seeing some of our newer board members take control and lead/ teach others how to build the candy leis. I hope our club gets to do something similar to this next year to show our appreciation to our upcoming seniors :) Laura Wong Carlmont

We volunteered with a nonprofit organization called Project Open Hand which serves meals to seniors over 60 years old and to handicapped or elders with illnesses. On Memorial Day, 16 of us volunteered at a local soup kitchen and helped by preparing prepackaged meals and other ingredients for the fresh food that would be served to large groups. We were split into different groups in charge of different stations such as the meat, sides, vegetables, and packaging the meal. Overall, the experience was well worth it since everyone felt that they had given back to the community and had fun while at it!

Ocean Beach Clean Up Today was a great day to spend at SF's Ocean Beach. We spent the afternoon cleaning up the beach and the weather was very splendid indeed, unlike the previous week which was very foggy. We enjoyed walking along the ocean and it's great waves. Some of us even went swimming. This was our first event this term where we partnered up with another club at our school, Adventures Ecology Club, and I must say that that was a very good idea not only because we were great friends with them to start with but because now we are trying to collaborate more to see what other types of things we can do to implement service, a foundation for both our clubs. We cleaned up the trash towards the Northern part of Ocean Beach, the part closest to Golden Gate Park. After we cleaned up for about an hour and a half we ventured across and behind a cliff at the end of the beach where we found a small cave and took a picture, the one you see above. We attempted to make it to a nearby cove to pick up trash there but unfortunately we ran out of time. However, that will be one of our main spots to clean up at our next beach clean-up. Overall, it was a fun day at the beach.
