Fall Rally North is just around the corner, and I hope you are all ready to show other Key Clubs how to celebrate AQUA APE STYLE! It’s that time of the year to pull out the inflatable bananas, the aqua ape suit, bananas, and paint to show YOUR Aqua Ape pride! We may not be the loudest or biggest Division out there, but I can tell you all that we are unique and have QUALITY. It’s about the Aqua Apes around you that make the experience of Key Club truly amazing. I can’t wait to see all your APEtastic, bright smiles in the stands, screaming your hearts out for service and for yourselves. Giant Race On Sunday September 7th, 2014, my friends Aaron Kwong, Alycia Low, and I volunteered at the annual Giant Race at the AT&T Park. The race aims to benefit Project Open Hand, a nonprofit organization that provides meals to the sick and elderly. My friends and I arrived early morning to the park at 6 AM and despite being really sleepy, we were really excited and pumped to volunteer! We were assigned to the finish line where we handed out water bottles to the finishing runners. Prior to the race, we the volunteers set up an enormous amount of Dasani water bottles on top of the tables. As soon as the clock began for the race, my friends and I were excited for how the event will turn out. To my surprise, the shift felt like an eternity, but it did not compare to the utter joy on the runners’ faces as we handed them the water bottles. We were given a lunch break at noon, and afterwards we continued with the next races. Overall, the event was fun, yet tiring. Nevertheless, I enjoyed being able to make others smile by simply giving them water and helping out for a good cause. My friends and I also received free tickets to a Giants game the following Tuesday night, which was a great bonus for volunteering!

Fiji was the highlight of my summer. I could not imagine that I was going to Fiji at first, it just sounded really magical. The services I did on this trip included mural painting, teaching local children, and tiling. We also went to a village to build toilet. The locals were very welcoming. Kids grabbed on to us tightly even before we entered the classroom. People there lived happily without the things we considered as a necessity (ex. smartphones, wifi). Well, it was a struggle for me to connect to the outside world because the base that we stayed did not offer wifi and had poor signals. Still, the locals managed to stay connected through a way of communication that is “dying in the developed world. Overall, Fiji has given me such a great experience that I could not find anywhere in the U.S., and if I had another chance, I would love to visit Fiji again. - Grant
