Lieutenant Governor’s Message

Aloha Aqua Apes! Welcome to the busiest season of Key Club! With events like Region Training Conference, Fall Rally North, and division service events, you truly have a plethora of opportunities to get more involved in Key Club this month! I really highly encourage everyone, especially new members, to come out to as many events as possible and learn more about what Key Club embodies. Club officers, make sure you’re utilizing some method of staying organized and proactive, whether it be a calendar, planner, phone, or some other tool. In addition, remember that registration for Fall Rally is quickly approaching; since this is a day event, the Key Clubber to Advisor ratio is 12:1 and NOT gender-specific. Start reaching out now to find advisors for this wonderful event! Please contact me or any member of the division leadership team if you need help finding advisors or registering! With October also starts the core spirit of Key Club! Make sure you come out to our division spirit socials to learn cheers and meet new people! Also, dues season is upon us! Remember that every member MUST pay dues in order to be considered a member of Key Club International. Dues are $11.50, with $4.50 going to the California-Nevada-Hawaii District and $7 to Key Club International. This money helps fund scholarships, district events, and membership benefits such as insurance at Key Club events. Members are entered into the Member Update Center; treasurers, if you do not have this information, please ask your faculty advisor or your past club treasurer. Keep up the amazing work Aqua Apes! Work at those 50 hours of community service. IMPORTANT: Fall Rally North is one of our district largest fundraisers for the Pediatric Trauma Program. If the division manages to raise $1,000 by FRN, I will dye my hair aqua blue for the rally. Fundraise, fundraise, fundraise! See you all soon! BANANAS for service, Kelvin Yang Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor

October Service Spotlight

What is the Spotlight

on Service Program?

The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.

Service Event Ideas: E-lemon-ate Challenge

Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) can infect newborns, spread quickly, and cause excruciating pain. Although it is a preventable disease, it takes the lives of both mothers and children every year. Through your participation in the Elemon-ate Challenge, you can raise awareness for both MNT worldwide and how $1.80 can help save lives through vaccines. To participate in the E-lemon-ate Challenge, film yourself eating a slice of a lemon. Post the video on social media, and tag your friends to accept the challenge!

Eliminate Balloons

“POP” quiz the members to see how much they know about MNT! Write facts and statistics regarding the Eliminate Project on small pieces of paper, and insert them into balloons. Blow them up and tie them off. Have members work together to pop the balloon, and read off the Eliminate facts. It is both educational and poppin’!

October Service Spotlight

the october sosp focus is...

UNICEF Eliminate Night

Host a social with Key Clubs in your area to have a fun night! Consider bowling, school lock-ins, and movie nights to kick it off. Provide food and activities related to the Eliminate Project, and at the end, proceeds from the event can be donated to the project.

E-lemon-ate Stand

A lemonade stand is both refreshing and fitting for the Eliminate Project! Sell glasses of lemonade at school lunches, parks, beaches, and at Key Club meetings to fundraise. It is a delicious way to stay hydrated and educate your community about MNT.

Fundraising Ideas: What is

UNICEF?

UNICEF is an organization that aspires to help all of the vulnerable children in the world. Its vision is to build a world where every child can grow up healthily, protected from harm, and educated, to reach their full potential. UNICEF was founded in 1946 to assist recovery efforts during and after World War II. Since then, it has become one of the biggest charities worldwide. Every year, UNICEF responds to more than 250 emergencies and continues to be a prominent organization present in 190 countries and territories.

Club Summaries

Club Summaries 12 | Official Division 34 North Newsletter | Region 17

Club Summaries In the last month, our club has been actively recruiting members and making our presence visible on campus. On Friday, August 26th, 2016, we participated in our school's club fair, where we showed off our spirit gear and took some snazzy photos with the student body. On Thursday, September 1st, 2016, we welcomed new members to our meeting with icebreakers and jumped straight in with some neat service events, such as the Coyote Point Park Cleanup. At that past event, we had 9 Aragon Dons help pull invasive French and Scotch broom and eucalyptus saplings. We look forward to the rest of the month, and to October, which will be our (and I'm sure other clubs') busiest month, with RTC, FRN, and everything in between. See you then!

Club Summaries Carlmont Key Club had a successful Ice Cream social/fundraiser last month. We also had an amazing turnout for our first meeting, and lots of members picked up membership application forms. The board decided to integrate more icebreakers and pictures/videos into lunch meetings until the end of October so that people see how fun Key Club is, and won't get too overwhelmed with all the information. Furthermore, we promoted the club at Freshman Club Fair. Now, we are preparing for Club Fair (for everyone) and a guest speaker in October. As well as, trying to work with the school district to allow us to attend Region Training Conference. Hannah HIgdon Carlmont Key Club President

Club Summaries This month, Mills Key Club helped the Millbrae Chamber of Commerce sell drinks at our Art and Wine Festival; part of the money raised goes to us. We also had our first meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 13th. About 35 members showed up, a large portion of which were freshmen. We're looking forward to a great year of service with our new members!

This month we didn't have many volunteering opportunities but we will be having our first official club meeting this Friday. We decided to hold back our meeting date because we recently had an event called club fair in our school which provides a chance for all the clubs to recruit new members. We hope to have more events to share as the year goes on!! Samantha Chen Westmoor Key Club co-President

Club Summaries This month the Burlingame Key Club really began to get moving for the new year! We have recruited many new members and are working on posters and clothes to promote the club. BHS participated in a Coyote Park clean up and in the Walk to end Alzheimers. We are planning on doing a new/used clothes drive for people in need.

Club Summaries This past month, El Camino has successfully accomplished their mission of attaining new, dedicated members for the new school year, and are looking forward to a term of new adventures through life doing what we love, SERVICE. After having our club rushes, we had our first meeting last week where we saw many familiar and new faces. One thing in common was they were eager to get back into the Aqua Ape spirit. We have some future events coming up like some garden clean-ups, beach clean ups (our fav), 5k participation/volunteer opportunities, and we have also been discussing some possible fun ideas we could do for a PTP fundraiser. We are deciding to do a "Pie an Officer" sometime in late October or November to help raise money for this charity. Overall, we've been getting back into the groove not only for key club but school itself. This year our goal is to have more events because those are KEY to building a strong relationship with a club. We are doing that by planning more service events and looking towards fundraising opportunities.

EL CAMINO

Umar Patel El Camino Key Club President

As a club this month we ordered fliers, worked on the tri-fold and also the Instagram cutout. This is all in preparation for the volunteer fair coming up this month. Five of our members attended the Coyote Point cleanup.

Club Summaries For the month of September, Key Club of South San Francisco volunteered with the Friends of Strawberry Hill in San Francisco to help restore butterfly habitats by pulling out the weeds that were harming the native plants. Soon we will be fundraising for PTP and our club. For example, we're planning to sell donuts at home football games, do some restaurant takeovers, and have a movie night.

In the month of September, Hillsdale Key Club has already managed to participate in two community service events. One was the Coyote Point Park Cleanup, where sixteen of our members helped to remove invasive plant species. The second event was the Walk to End Alzheimer's in San Francisco where we were a part of the Thank You Brigade. This month we also plan to attend the Presidio Park Cleanup and the SF Food Bank.

Symphony Sunset

Belinda Yu Carlmont Key Club Vice President Symphony at Sunset was a huge success! Guests gathered on a Saturday night to enjoy dinner, listen to live music, and support Parks and Recreation of San Carlos. This was my second time volunteering at this event. I helped set up tables and pass out event programs to guests as they entered. Other volunteers escorted guests to their table and managed the food table. One bonus was having the opportunity to listen to the beautiful, live music at night.

Symphony Sunset

Dasha Baroni Carlmont Key Club Member I really enjoyed volunteering at the symphony at sunset. For one, the music was absolutely awesome. There were so many talented performers there so when I was volunteering it was fun to listen to the music. I set up drink cups, put out plates, and did the clean up. I didn't mind cleaning up because I got to enjoy the beautiful music. I really enjoyed helping out because it helped me realize that it's important to do things for others and to not always do things for yourself.

Ryder Park Beach Clean Up

Tyler Koo Aragon Key Club Member After we were dropped off, we immediately began to prepare for the many hours of tedious work we had ahead of us. We grabbed our garbage bags and rubber gloves and traveled through a marshland filled with various bottles and bricks in an effort to pick them up. Although it was a difficult process, and sweat ran down our faces, our willpower, determination, and perseverance ultimately allowed us to accomplish the task at hand. We, the members of Key Club, will never forget this day.

Ryder Park Beach Clean Up

Sylvia Young Aragon Key Club Member When we got to the cleanup we headed to the rocky side of the park near the water. We immediately got to work, picking up things that didn't belong at the beach and putting them into bags and buckets. After rinsing off, we got lunch for our help and I got to go to work with muddy shoes.

Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member We were given large bags to fill up with trash or things that didn't belong along the beach. We walked along the water picking up trash such as broken glass, cans, and other assorted items. Afterward, we were given burgers and hot dogs for our service.

Carlmont Ice Cream Social

Trey Chock This past Sunday I went to Carlmont Key Club's Carlmont Key Ice Cream Social where I got to eat ice cream Club Member and hang out with my friends. In addition to

seeing my old friends, I also got to meet and make new ones. It was really fun when I got slam a pie right into my friend's face. But it didn't feel as good later in the afternoon when he got payback on me. This social was a great experience for me as I got to have a good time and make some new friends.

Carlmont Ice Cream Social

Celeste Hsu Carlmont Key Club Secretary The ice cream social was a huge success! We played some ice breakers since many people came who didn't know each other, and we ate ice cream together. We concluded the event with an auction to pie our officers in the face. Overall, I loved meeting new people and raising money for our club!

Aragon Club Fair

Alex Ma Aragon Key Club Treasurer

On September 2, Aragon High School held their annual Club Fair. This event is held during lunch and helps students join clubs that they are interested in. Our Key Club table was set up with posters, brochures, and a trifold informing anyone interested on what Key Club is. In addition to our table, we used cardboard cutouts of our Instagram profile for people to take pictures with. The August DCM really helped us with materials for this event. The Club Fair was a massive success for Aragon's Key Club and we have hit the ground running for the start of a new school year!

Walk To End Alzheimer’s

Sahana Bhattal Aragon Key Club Member My experience at, The Walk to End Alzheimer's, was elating. Not only were the volunteers positive and committed, but the participants who walked in the event were gracious enough to raise money for someone else's benefit. When cheering people on and holding up the posters, I felt jubilant. This was my first time volunteering and I feel satisfied just knowing I did something that can make someone’s day or life even.
