Lieutenant Governor’s Message

Aloha Aqua Apes! Welcome to the last half of the term! Can you believe how quickly this term is flying by? Let’s review how far along our goals we are: Service: As of October 10th, we have logged a collective total of 2,593 service hours. Remember we still have 6 months to reach our goal of 10,000 service hours! It is imperative that you report all of your service hours to your club secretary so they can accurately report it to the division. Fundraising: As of October 16th, $1,123.31 has been donated to the Pediatric Trauma Program from Division 34 North! We are well under way to achieve our goal of $2,000 (from $1,500 last term); expect an update at the November DCM, as we are expecting many clubs to bring donations to Fall Rally North :) Membership: Now that we are in Quarter 3, it is again time to start paying your annual Key Club dues! Our goal for the term is 600 dues paid members, so make sure you advocate the importance of dues to all prospective members! Last term, we ended with 395 dues paid members, so this is definitely a huge leap, but I believe we can reach it! Also, I am extremely excited to announce that we have a new club joining the Aqua Ape family! Congratulations to Notre Dame Key Club for successfully submitting their charter to Key Club International! Keep up the amazing work Aqua Apes! I cannot express how proud I am of every club this term; I am confident we can create a legacy that will carry on into the next term and all those that follow. Speaking of next term, if you are interested in running for Lieutenant Governor or for a District Executive position, keep an eye out for reflector emails with information on how you can run! Please contact me if you have any questions :-) See you all soon! BANANAS for service, Kelvin Yang Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor

November Service Spotlight

What is the Spotlight

on Service Program?

The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.

Project Ideas: Kiwanis Dinner and Thank you’s Plan a Thanksgiving-style dinner for your Kiwanis Family this season! Plan the event with each branch of the K-Family. Together, you can find food sponsors and prepare food. Have each of the branches take responsibility to decorate, serve food, and set up materials. Be sure to invite members from all of the branches to the dinner. This is a great way to show support and recognize how much you value all of the members from all branches of the K-Family.

Key Club Week Appreciation Messages

From November 7th to 11th, the California-Nevada-Hawaii District will be celebrating Key Club Week! Throughout this week, give your appreciation to the club members. At your club meeting, place an appreciation box to allow members to put in their messages of positive thoughts and appreciation. At the end of the meeting, share to everyone the messages in the box in order to highlight and appreciate attendees.

8 | Official Division 34 North Newsletter | Region 17

November Service Spotlight

the November sosp focus is...

Kiwanis Family Kiwanis Family Thank You Cards

Appreciate the branches of the Kiwanis Family this month. Much like Key Club, the Kiwanis Family has all worked together to make a difference in the community. Make a card to give to the members of the K-Family. Let’s show our gratitude and appreciate for their support this month!

Kiwanis Takeover

Wouldn’t it be fun to put yourself in the shoes of the Kiwanians for a day? Do it by running a Kiwanis Meeting for a day! Ask your Kiwanis Club to host a Kiwanis Takeover, where Key Club will get the chance to run the Kiwanis meeting. You get to set the rules, create the agenda, lead games, and run fundraisers. This will create a chance to bond with your Kiwanians and show your appreciation for them.

How to Get Involved? 1. Email or call the sponsoring Kiwanis Club. 2. Ask about doing a takeover. 3. Start planning the agenda with the Kiwanis Club and the Key Club you serve. 4. Add fun events, icebreakers, and incentives for the attendees. 5. Add an auction to fundraise for charity. 6. Gather the necessary materials for the meeting. 7. Arrive to the takeover early to prepare for the meeting. 8. Get to know your sponsoring Kiwanis Club!

Club Summaries In the past month, our club has been very busy, like so many Key Clubs this time of year. On September 17, our members attended the division service event at the Walk to End Alzheimer's and the coastal cleanup at Ryder Park as a part of the Coastal Cleanup Day all along the West Coast. On October 1st, Aragon sent 14 members, including some very active new members, to Region Training Conference at Camp Jones Gulch, with the highest attendance in the division. We look forward to similar high attendance, as well as lots of spirit, at Fall Rally North.

Club Summaries This past month Carlmont has been fundraising a lot for Fall Rally North; as well as continuing to offer service events. We have been selling T-pumps at football games and sold water bottles at the Homecoming Dance. Selling Tpumps at games was a learning experience for us since we had to consider which flavors and how many of each flavor, to sell. We also had a guest speaker from Healthy Cities Tutoring visit during one of our lunch meetings. In the past, members have served a lot of hours through tutoring.

Club Summaries This past month, Mills Key Club fundraised at Mills Mania, our school's annual fundraiser. We had a game where people had to find a jelly bean hidden in a bowl of whipped cream using only their faces. We were too caught up in the fun to take pictures, but I'm sure you can imagine how much fun everyone had. We hope to start planning our big, year-long service project soon!

Club Summaries This past month, we have done a bunch of things. We had our first fundraiser during back to school night which was a huge success. We sold chicken skewers and made $100. Next, we had RTC, which was super fun. Only 4 officers went Nancy Liu, Vanessa Chow, Catherine Ke , and me. Lastly, we had a bake sale to raise money for our club to use at the rally.

LOWELL

Club Summaries The Burlingame Key Club was really excited to dive into this new school year! Along with 2 beach cleanups, members volunteered at the walk to end Alzheimer's and our president and secretary were able to attend the Regional Training Conference at Camp Jones Gulch! There they were able to meet other key clubbers and learn about creative ways to fundraise and serve. Burlingame was also honored to be named club of the month for September at the Division Council Meeting!

Club Summaries This past month we had about 15 people come to our school-wide cleanup at Ocean Beach. We're starting to engage the underclassmen a lot more, taking them to events such as the beach cleanup and the Garden Clean Up we had this past weekend in San Francisco as well. We cleaned up a 92-yearold World War II veteran's and Kiwanian's garden by pulling out weeds and making room for new plants. We are also planning to do a pie an officer fundraiser sometime in late November to raise money for PTP. We had a pretty nice turnout at the prep day for FRN and hope to see the same enthusiasm at Six Flags. We're going to raffle some spirit gear off to dues paid members, and some other events we are going to do in the next couple of weeks will be helping out with a blood drive at our school and also volunteer at Martin Elementary School's Halloween Carnival.

We also had two members from our club attend the Kiwanis Division 34 Installation on Oct 1. Some upcoming events that we have include a donut sale at our homecoming football game, volunteering at the Martin Elementary School Fall Festival, and at the Boys & Girls Club Monster Bash. Saint Anthony’s of Padua Lunch

Sahana Bhattel Aragon Key Club Member My experience at St. Anthony’s was just amazing! I loved knowing that those who are less fortunate have a safe haven and are able to get the essential things they need for their family. Everyone had a smile on their faces as if everything was normal, and they had such good manners. My experience that day really changed my perspective on people.

Saint Anthony’s of Padua Lunch

Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member We went to St. Anthony of Padua's dining hall to prepare lunch for the residents of the area on Saturday, August 8th. Tyler and I worked in the kitchen husking and washing corn. We went through roughly 8 large boxes of corn in about 3 hours.

Mandy Hitchcock Carlmont Key Club Member On Sunday, October 9, the art and wine festival was concluding and we came to help pack up the supplies of the booths. Helping the people clean up what they invested their time in was very rewarding and I really enjoyed it!

Lowell Bake Sale

Jason Fong Lowell Key Club Member On October 9 Lowell key club had a bake sale at west portal. We had this bake sale to help fundraise for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). We sold cookies, cupcakes, brownies, lemon cake rolls, and rice krispy treats. We had some trouble selling at the beginning, but in the end, we managed to sell everything. We had a good time and it was nice seeing people donate money without buying anything.

Lowell Bake Sale 24 | Official Division 34 North Newsletter | Region 17

Lowell Bake Sale

Queenie Chen Lowell Key Club Member What we did was just ask people who pass by if they wanted to buy the baked goods or not. We explained what the money made from this would fund, and that made a lot of people decide to donate or buy the goods. A lot of the times, children were the ones that wanted the food the most and the parents bought it for them. All in all, I think it was a great experience. I liked making new friends and helping out.

Andy Wu Lowell Key Club Member

The bake sale was loads of fun because you had to struggle to try to sell baked goods and work on the best way to sell them. We even tried selling it by carrying the goods around, but that strategy failed. Also, we met a lot of nice people and some donated money without buying anything! We met a few Lowell alumni who were really generous. Overall, this was a fun and unique experience helping the Pediatric Trauma Program!

Region Training Conference

Celeste Hsu Carlmont Club Secretary This was my first (and last) year going to RTC, and I wish I had gone all four years! I had such an amazing experience, meeting other key clubbers and learning about leadership. I loved playing team bonding games, and attending this event made me even more excited about Key Club (if that is even possible)!

RTC was a very educational and fun experience for me. Being a new member to Key Club this year, I really enjoyed learning about some basics while also getting to spend some time with my friends. One of the things we learned was about how to manage the role of secretary of a club. It sounded rather complicated, with many different forms and deadlines that must be kept track of. Additionally, we went over some simple background information, such as how to fundraise, and also some tips on improving public speaking. My favorite activity was the skits during the campfire at night, despite the rather intense cold. This more or less sums up my first experience as a Key Club member.

To be honest I think RTC was probably the most memorable key club event. RTC was a fun trip where I got to meet so many different people and actually created a strong friendship. The campfire at RTC was super fun since we all screamed our hearts out to support our team. We created skits to present to other groups to teach life lessons. The food was also tasty.

Nancy Liu Lowell Key Club Member RTC was a wonderful and exciting experience for me because not only did I learn skills essential for being successful but I also met lots of new people. I learned about leadership, teamwork, and other skills with other people. It was fun to bond with people with activities and games that had good messages. In addition, the food was really good! I believe the whole experience was worth it.

This year was my first year going to RTC, and it's honestly one of my favorite Key Club moments. I really enjoyed meeting people from so many different divisions, and going from strangers to friends in less than a day with people in my group (#FLIKISLIT!!!) Personally, my favorite part (other than the amazing food!!) was performing our skit and our chants in front of all the other groups and seeing the different things everyone came up with. Everyone was so spirited within their division and their group, and it reminded me how big the Key Club community is and why I joined in the first place.

Region Training Conference Region 17 | Official Division 34 North Newsletter | 29

Region Training Conference

Sylvia Young Aragon Key Club Member On October 1 and 2, many Key Clubbers from Regions 17 and 9 met up in Camp Jones Gulch in La Honda, CA for RTC. The theme for RTC this year, or Region Training Conference, was Animators of Service based off of Disney's Pixar characters and movies. Workshops were scheduled throughout the weekend, focusing on building leadership and communication skills along with providing ideas of things that can be done to improve home clubs. Members were also able to connect with other Key Clubbers at RTC within their assigned groups, at mealtimes, or at the large campfire at the end of the first night. The experience taught and gave members ways to build a better community through service and pushed many to want to become more involved in aiding others through Key Club.

Region Training Conference 30 | Official Division 34 North Newsletter | Region 17

Region Training Conference

Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member RTC began with the opening ceremony, where we met our LTG's and discovered our group leader. Over the course of the next few hours, we attended different workshops where we learned how to become a successful Key Club officer, and we also attended a keynote where the guest speakers discussed the many different ways to get involved. The real fun began when the sun went down; we created skits and a cheer with our group. We would later perform these skits at the large campfire. Afterward, we headed down to the dining hall where we witnessed some rap battles and played board games. On the final day of RTC, we participated in outdoor activities and yelled our cheers one last time.
