Happy November! How are we already half way through the term?? Although we had a very different experience this term, I hope it still has been a memorable one. With the holidays approaching, the end of 2020 is also very near! Despite the circumstances we endured this year, I hope you all are able to find something to be grateful for and realize the lessons that have been taught. We only have two more months of this year, which is extremely quick! So if you haven’t yet, I would start accomplishing those new year resolutions that were made in January :))) I hope you all had a great October and was able to participate in many of the events that were held, whether that be division or club level events. This month we created patches, created notes of encouragement for foster kids, as well as painted pumpkins to spread awareness for breast cancer awareness month! If you weren’t able to participate much in this month’s events, that is okay! We have plenty of opportunities this month as well. If you are ever feeling overwhelmed or stressed, I am always available to talk to:)) As usual, don’t forget to submit your articles and visuals, club summaries, and challenges on time! These are all very effective ways to boost banana points :)) Enjoy this month’s newsletter and please contact me if you have any suggestions!
Thanks,
Amber Chia

DNE Challenge: What is one thing you experiencied this year that was out of your comfort zone? Or something you did that surprised you?
Aloha, Aqua Apes!
The new date for Early-Bird dues now overlaps with the On-Time date, so both deadlines happen to be on December 1st. Make sure to get in your payments before this date! Please contact your club officers if you have any questions on how to become dues paid. Lastly, I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to everybody that’s reading this message right now. Yes you :) Thank you for being a part of our Key Club family; I really hope that you’ve been able to meet caring and genuine people, and have been able to serve your home, school, and community, even from home! ltg Challenge: What is your favorite family tradition?
Lieutenant Governor
I hope you all had a fun and safe Halloween weekend! Also, I hope that you’re all taking care of yourselves, making sure to eat proper meals, and getting enough sleep. If this doesn’t sound like you, I hope that you can make steps towards implementing these into your daily life! A really important reminder I would like to stress to you all is to make sure you are dues paid! By being a dues paid member, you are able to apply for district-level contests, scholarships, and more! You even get a new member pin, ID, and certificate from your club.

Hey guys! I hope you are all are doing well and had fun at all the October events! Although this Halloween had to be celebrated at home, I still wish all of you guys had a fantastic time, whether binging watching Halloween movies or eating sweets. As the holiday season is coming, remember to spread that joy and happiness. We got to spend a lot of time with our families this year; however, don’t let that stop your traditions whether you celebrate or not. And the last reminder to all seniors, UC apps are due this month, and I wish you the best of luck! You got this! I believe in you! Always feel free to reach out if you need help! I can’t wait to see you at future events! You’re ape-tastic and thank you guys so much for your hard work.

I’m so incredibly proud of the progress our division has made so far throughout this term, keep up the great work! To all the seniors working on their college apps, you’re so close: power through the next two months and you’ll be free! To all my fellow juniors, you’re doing amazing; I know classes are stressful but you’re smarter and more capable than you think!! Every single one of you guys are incredibly smart and have overcome so much already :)) I’m always here if anyone needs to talk about anything -- it doesn’t have to be school or key club related! Have a great rest of the year and don’t forget to remember all there is to be grateful for; I love you all <3

Hope you guys are doing well and used to online learning now. I’m sure most guys have your work under control, but if not, keeping a planner or Google Calendar can be great ways to stay on track! October was filled with so many incredible events and I was so ecstatic to see so many of you guys there--from Carlmont’s Patch Project to Mills’ Project. In this recruitment season, I’m so proud of all the clubs that brought many new members to events, and it’s exciting to see new faces at every event. With new events in November, such as a potential gaming tournament, stay posted with updates on the division Instagram account @d34naquaapes! Be sure to keep attending service events as they’re a great way to help the community while increasing your service hours. Keep on recruiting members and have them dues paid as we are trying to achieve our CNH District membership goal. As always, if you have any questions or if you need anyone to reach out to, please do! I hope to talk to you guys soon!

Kindness Rocks
Division Service Project hosted by Notre Dame
5
DNE Challenge: what is one thing you would like to accomplish before the year ends?
Kindness rocks was a fun online event where members of the division came together to paint on rocks. The event consisted of breakout rooms with an icebreaker and then moved onto painting encouraging messages on rocks. The inspiring messages on the rocks were made to spread positivity and bring joy to people who saw them. The members then brought the rocks to a dropoff location which were then distributed to continue spreading the joy in various communities. Annabel Chia Carlmont
To start off the Kindness Rocks Project, we went into breakout rooms and shared our unpopular opinions to help break the ice. Then, we all came back and were given instructions on what to do with our rocks. The rest of the event we all painted our rocks together and listened to some music. The chat bonded over our mutual love for the artists Harry Styles, One Direction, and Taylor Swift during this and that even inspired some of the quotes that were painted on the rocks! I really enjoyed this event and thought it was very relaxing and therapeutic to paint and talk with the rest of the division! Courtney Tai Aragon
The Kindness Rocks Project was different from most other events and I loved the idea behind it! We painted and decorated rocks with positive messages to spread good vibes. I’d never painted rocks before so I found it to be something new and I also enjoy painting in general so this event was a perfect mix of service and fun for me. Jasmine Bao Lowell

At Operation Gratitude we showed our appreciation to our first responders through making cards. We had icebreakers to get to know each other a little bit better through this virtual format and had working time to make these cards. While we made cards we could send in music requests and we had a lot of fun and thought about how much our first responders serve us. John Hillyard Aragon

Operation 7
During Operation Gratitude, 116 persistent and sentimental students came together to write sincere letters to our country’s finest in order to commemorate the tragic occurrence of 9/11. We wrote letters to the likes of first responders, firefighters, and medical professionals. To them, we wrote sincere letters of gratitude, and we reminded them of their memorable accomplishments. At the event, although there were 116 participants, there was a sense of friendship between the participants, old and new. In the chat, we shared song suggestions, opinions on artists, and bonded over our mutual favorite artists. I thought the event was a great way to commemorate the occurrence of 9/11, and it was wonderful to meet new people (at the largest Key Club event I have attended). In these unprecedented times, joining extracurricular activities may not seem like a priority. Personally, I think joining extracurricular activities is quite a crucial step to take in order to meet basic human social needs. I’m fairly new to Key Club, and as a Freshman, I don’t get to meet many people. At this event, I felt like I got to make friends and bond with people despite not having met them or spoken to them prior to the fact. I am so glad I participated in this event- it truly showed how Key Club is more of a family than a school activity. Lina Saleh Carlmont
During the interclub with Carlmont, Argon, Jefferson and Sequoia, we expressed our gratitude towards healthcare providers First Responders and firefighters. This was an amazing opportunity to bond with key clubbers across the bay and give back to those who protected California through these dangerous and frightening times. Vanessa Yang Lowell

The Kahoot Fundraiser was an excellent way to not only bond with fellow Key Clubbers, but to expose me to new current events. Personally, I don’t keep up with current events much, but the Kahoot Fundraiser motivated me to expose myself more to important topics. The event made me realize that the world is dealing with a tremendous amount of problems that need to be addressed and solved. It was also a nice break interacting with other members, especially with school. Overall, the Kahoot Fundraiser was a great learning and social experience. Crystal Chu Aragon
A couple of weeks ago, I attended a Kahoot fundraiser event hosted by the division. It was such a fun experience to play along with other members from the division. One thing about this kahoot that I particularly like is that they didn’t just concentrate on what’s going on in the United States, but they focused on what’s going on all over the world. For people like me who do not always keep up with the news and other stuff going on around the world, this event was quite insightful and beneficial. In these uncertain times, I think it’s really important for people to understand what’s happening around the world. I’ve learned a lot from going to this event and I look forward to more events like these. Florence Thwe Westmoor

Kahoot Fundraiser
Division Wide Fundraising Event hosted by Westmoor
The Kahoot fundraiser started off with an icebreaker about what we were most passionate about, and I liked that it related to the event which talked about current global issues that many people are passionate about. Afterward, we began the Kahoot and answered questions about issues concerning specifically the US in addition to the rest of the world, and questions relating to our preferred charities. I was honored to have won the Kahoot and chose to donate my half of the funds raised to the Trevor Project. This event was really fun and it was also extremely interesting as well as shocking to learn about all the current global issues. Courtney Tai Aragon

Club Summary
Aragon:
For the month of September Aragon Key Club promoted the club through our school’s virtual club fair. We also started to plan our first official general meeting. Our officers and members attended this year’s RTC which was a lot of fun. We also attended the Kahoot Fundraiser which was very informative. We attended both the Kindness Rocks and Operation Gratitude service events. We also held an interclub with Burlingame where we made bookmarks for young readers. The rest of the month we spent time planning for our October service event.
Carlmont:
- Anna Abelgas
Over the past month of September we’ve been holding weekly club meetings and service events (one including guest speakers: LTG Kristen Carpio, EA Courtney Tai, and two Carlmont Key Club alumni!) We participated in our school’s virtual club fair and were able to recruit many new members! We also just held a successful social/service event with Kahoot and a Letter for Orphans service event and we had a great turnout for RTC as well :) We can’t wait for the upcoming division UNICEF and free rice event!
El Camino:
- Ashley Zheng
In the month of September, El Camino’s Key Club grew so much! Our club rush recruitment campaign was a huge success. The club went from a mere 4 members to over 20 members. This is a huge growth! On top of that, we’ve been having more member participation in the various service events we’ve rolled out. Also, we’ve been doing some in-person service events to change things up a bit. Having every event over Zoom gets very mundane and boring. Anyway, it’s great to see the faces of the club members in real life and not just their icon on Zoom. For example, we had a community cleanup event and a food distribution event. Overall, our club is very healthy and the board is hoping that this momentum will continue.
Hillsdale:
- Alex Quemuel
In the month of September, Hillsdale Key Club had members attend events such as Operation Gratitude, Kindness Rock, and Kahoot Fundraiser. We also had 5 officers and 1 member attend the Region Training Conference. Currently we have an interclub event planned with Calmont and Notre Dames. This service event will include decorating paper lunch bags that will be used to deliver meals to children and elderly. We have just started educating members about dues and are working to recruit more dues paid members before the early bird deadline.

Jefferson: September was once again another hectic month for our officers and our club. We hosted two service projects after our General Meetings this month, and both events attracted 30+ people each. Our plan is to continue these service projects every other week after our general meetings. Additionally, September saw Jefferson High School’s Club Rush. Our club took advantage of the opportunity to attract new members- especially freshmen. Our efforts have most definitely paid off, as we have seen at least 10 new freshmen members. Furthermore, our treasurer has been working hard to collect dues for those who wish to become dues-paid members. On top of all this, sadly, we had to say goodbye to our amazing and reliable PR, Jenna, who is moving schools; we are in the midst of finding a replacement for our PR position and finding applications for 2 intern positions. The interns will help officers with small tasks, but more importantly, will serve as a stepping stone to those who may be interested in running for officer positions in the future. Overall, another dominant and busy month for our club all around. We are proud of all the officers, members, and advisors who continue to make time and
Lowell:
- Luis Solidum
This past September, Lowell held events such as Notes for the Homebound and the Elderly Card Drive Interclub with Saint Ignatius. For Notes for the Homebound, we wrote letters for seniors who were stuck at home during the current circumstances to let them know that they are not alone. In our interclub with Saint Ignatius, we wrote letters to seniors at St. Annes Senior Home to make sure that they know that they’re in our thoughts and prayers. We attended larger events such as the Regional Training Conference where our members were able to meet keyclubbers from all over Regions 9 and 17! Lowell also attended the District Member Recognition Workshop where we were able to learn more about member recognition opportunities within key. This month we are having an interclub called The Rainbow Project with Aragon, Sequoia, and Saint Ignatius to write letters for the LGBTQ+ community. We’re also participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and planning on hosting an Among Us bonding event for Halloween.
Mills:
- Jasmine Bao
This past month we’ve held one club meeting as well as multiple board meetings over zoom. We’ve been planning our merch fundraiser and started a sticker design contest within our club. We had a couple of members participate in the Kindness Rock Project as well as the Operation Gratitude Event. We also did some club advertisements during our school’s online club fair. This upcoming month we plan to vote on the sticker design and host the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Division Wide Event.
Notre Dame:
- Kaelyn Fung
Throughout September, Notre Dame Key Club participated in Division level events, hosted a Division Wide Service project, and attended Region Training Conference. We wrote letters to first responders during Operation Gratitude on September 11th, hosted The Kindness Rock Project on September 15th and made rocks that were donated to Boys and Girls Club, and attended the September DCM on September 20th! We also had our first general meeting on September 30th. Currently, we are planning a club bonding event to get to know new members better, especially underclassmen since we haven’t had the opportunity to meet each other and talk in a social setting. We are continuing to have weekly meetings and we will begin planning for dues season. We are excited for upcoming events and plan to host more service projects!

San Mateo:
During the month of September, our club continued to hold weekly meetings. We focused a lot on recruiting more members and making sure they had an easy time learning about our club. Some of our new members earned their first service hours in events like Operation Gratitude and the Kindness Rocks Project. Our officers attended the Region Training Conference and the Division Council Meeting. For school, we created an introductory video for our school’s Volunteer Club Faire. We even started planning a possible fundraiser for our future. All in all, our club membership has really grown in the month of September and we are excited to see this growth continue in the months to come.
Sequoia:
-Danielle Richards
For September, Sequoia’s Key Club helped the Food Bank Harvest food distribution for families. We helped by putting boxes of food in cars as well as take down the family’s information. We had our first school wide meeting, where we shared our goals and vision for the club. Some of our members attended Operation Gratitude, where we made cards for first responders and expressed our gratitude. Also attended the annual RTC, DCM, and the president webinar. These events were a lot of fun, and we were able to bond with other clubs within our division. We continue to have our regular club meetings and have begun to recruit more new members!
St. Ignatius
- Sharon Song
This past month, the Key Club has been very active. We held two all club meetings in addition to a club board meeting. We took part in out first inter-club meeting with Lowell, and we had a great turnout for the letter writing campaign for the residents at St. Anne’s Home. In addition, another service club at SI reached out to our President and was interested in working together on some events. We are now in discussion for planning those events. Also, the SI club will take part in a UNICEF service event this Saturday. We are gaining new members through our Instagram every week and the future is bright.
- Lucas Mc Fadden
South San Francisco:
For the month of October, our main focus was fundraising for UNICEF through the Trick or Treat for UNICEF project! We are continuing to fundraise still and we are also attending all of the DWS projects throughout the entire month. We had an inter-club with Aragon, Burlingame, and Notre Dame to raise awareness for PTP by decorating pillowcases! We also had a game night on the 24th after the DCM to bond with our member by playing Among Us and Skribbl.io and it was super fun! We also participated in PTP week and got our members to participate as well! In the upcoming month, we are planning more projects on a club level and we are also planning more inter-clubs with more clubs! Stay safe!
Westmoor: 13
- Caroline Narcisco
For the past month, we have been prompting to underclassmen and focusing on dues. We now have bi-monthly general meetings and after these meetings, we played an escape and made origami stars for hospitals. We had a collaboration with 3 other clubs on campus to celebrate Halloween. We had a baking and movie social in hopes of recruiting new members from other clubs on campus. Our school also held a club rush. With only 15 minutes we hope it was successful enough to entice new members. Our main goal for this term is still membership as our school isn’t active in clubs, and that’s why we also set up incentives for dues and hours. We hope to spread the love of service to everyone even during quarantine.
- Anni Zhang
Leadership Showcase
Interested in obtaining a leadership position in the future? Leadership positions are a great way to immerse yourself into Key Club, build friendships, and develop valuable leadership skills that will be applicable in your future! Every month, various members who hold a leadership postion will introduce themselves and explain their responsibilites. These leadership positions could be division or club level positions!
THIS MONTH: D34N SERVICE & FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE Fun Fact: I really like fresh coconuts & especially opening them up with a cleaver it’s very fun. Main responsibilities: As coordinator, I try to help clubs by finding service projects for them to implement on their own. I essentially assist service projects event clubs host on a division level which includes making sure the event runs smoothly & enjoyable for everyone! We try to finalize next month’s service project events schedule by the time the DCM of the month takes place. So it’s a lot of planning ahead + coordinating with PR committee to create/promote graphics for all Key Club members to know future events! My committee & I also have tried our best to create fun virtual fundraisers for members to participate.
Lisa Ngyuen D34N Service/Fundraising Committee Chair
Favorite aspect: My favorite part of being coordinator is assisting clubs & seeing them grow into finding their own service projects + having such high attendance for their own events. It’s incredibly rewarding to see presidents finding cool & interactive service projects ideas & asking them to host it division wide. It’s also very fun to be able to talk to so many people! I love how I’m given the chance to work so closely with DLT members & club officers to create these fun events when we’ve been restricted to Zoom meetings this entire term.
Fun Fact: One fun fact about me is that in second grade during pe I was playing four square with a basketball, and the ball pushed back on my pinky. My pinky ended up being broken, and it never healed correctly, so I hold my pencil weirdly. Main responsibilities: My main responsibilities would have to be my academics and my role in Key Club as Aragon’s secretary and a member of the service and fundraising committee. I definitely enjoy organizing and attending my Key Club duties more though!
Crystal Chu D34N Service/Fundraising Committee Member
Favorite aspect: My favorite part about being a part of the service/ fundraising committee would watching everything come together. Even though sometimes it can be a bit stressful, being supported by the other members helps and it’s fun communicating with everyone! In general though, knowing that everyone is enjoying themselves at the event, while also helping others out during these difficult times, is the best part about being in Key Club :))

AMAZING APES
Member of the month: Amanda Li (San Mateo):
Amanda is an active member of Key Club. She comes to all the club meetings, as well as most of the DCMs and Division Wide Service Events. Additionally, she takes the initiative to find potential service events that could turn into service events for our club. She even consistently volunteers to help plan events for the club. Amanda is a great and active member.
Officer of the month: Jessy Guan (Lowell): She’s always on top of her deadlines and if we need a graphic by the next day, she’ll have it by the next day! Her graphics are always great and we love how she takes our input into consideration when making them.
Advisor of the month: Advisor Wong (Jefferson): To be an advisor goes deeper than just simply watching over your club members and making sure they don’t burn the club down. Mr Wong is the perfect embodiment of an advisor who does more than simply watches over his students and members. Wong consistently puts his own plans to the side to tend to members. On a nearly consistent basis he would engage with Jefferson’s board. Wong goes above and beyond everyday to ensure a great Key Club experience, he even puts in service hours!! Consistently going above and beyond.
Club of the month: El Camino: 15
Being open to criticism, they have been improving tremendously, and still strive to be even better. El Camino has been working extremely hard and have significantly increased their members in the past month. They’ve put together various events both in person and communicate effectively with members. With their passion for service, we are excited to see what else they can do.
