Lieutenant Governor’s Message

Aloha Aqua Apes! Can you believe that the fall school semester is nearly over? And finals are nearly upon us! Keep working hard and winter break will be here in no time! To all my seniors, don’t procrastinate on those college apps; I know you can all do it! This is a reminder that dues must be sent to Key Club International by December 1st in order for your club to be in good standing. If your club does not know how to submit dues, please contact me as soon as possible! Dues money goes toward funding scholarships, planning district and division events, and providing membership insurance. In addition, you MUST be dues-paid in order to run for any Key Club leadership position at any level (club, district, division, international) and to vote in these elections! Speaking of elections, believe it or not, the Key Club election season is nearly upon us! All clubs should be holding club elections during February in accordance with Key Club policies; the positions recognized by Key Club International are President, Vice President(s), Secretary, Treasurer, and Editor. In addition, if you are interested in running for Lt. Governor or simply would like to learn more about Key Club, it is highly recommended you attend Candidate Training Conference on Saturday, December 10th! This is a whole day event keep an eye on your emails for details to follow! For anyone who is interested in running for a District Executive position (Governor, Secretary, Treasurer), you must attend a MANDATORY informational/training conference in Rancho Cucamonga, CA on Sunday, December 11th. If you would like more information, you can visit the Cyberkey at cnhkeyclub.org or contact me! In the meantime, keep working on those service and fundraising goals! With regards to dues, remember that members can pay at any time during the year. That means that if your club already sent in dues, additional members can continue to pay and you can continue to submit them for the rest of the term! However, if your club has not sent in ANY dues by December 1st, then you are considered delinquent and in danger of having your club suspended, so dues are extremely important!

Please contact me if you have any questions :-) See you all soon! BANANAS for service, Kelvin Yang Division 34 North Lieutenant Governor

December Service Spotlight

What is the Spotlight

on Service Program?

The Spotlight on Service Program is a recognition service that offers a chance for clubs to be featured in the District Newsletter. It provides a uniform infrastructure for clubs to take initiative in becoming involved with local and district- wide organizations that are parallel with the Cali-Nev-Ha District’s Major Emphasis— Children: Their Future, Our Focus.

Project Ideas: Homeless Care Packages Pack some boxes filled with basic sanitary supplies and canned foods! Don't forget to add some warm clothing for the chilly holiday season. Ask for donations from the community to collect these supplies!

School Supply Drive Not everybody has the luxury to receive all the basic school supplies they need, but you can help. Organize a school supply drive by spreading the word to the community!

Food Banks Look for any food banks near your location where you can volunteer! Food banks support people in your community. They are always welcoming help and a small amount of food donations can go a long way.

Adopt-a-Family For Salvation Army Hold a fundraiser or collect donations to help out a family in need out this holiday season! Go shopping for warm clothes, food, toys for kids, and other gifts to help your adopted family feel warm and loved this Christmas.

December Service Spotlight

the December sosp focus is...

Providing Basic Needs Ice Skating Social Team up with a local ice skating rink to host a fundraiser with your club; let members know at your meetings, promote the event on social media, make fliers and post them around town. It’s the holiday season; people will be looking forward to a festive time at the rink!

Secret Santa Distribution Hold a Secret Santa opportunity at school for people to purchase small Christmas goodies for friends and loved ones. Post flyers around school and receive orders and collect money for about 1-2 weeks. Have a day to buy all products (e.g. small teddy bear, candy) and put together the goodies. Distribute the goodies during finals week to make their day!

School Supply Drive Not everybody has the luxury to receive all the basic school supplies they need, but you can help. Organize a school supply drive by spreading the word to the community!

Club Summaries

Our club is going through a more relaxed time right now, after the rush of October. We attended the November DCM, helping write letters to soldiers, and are also preparing for our school's food fair on December 2nd where we will sell pizza and milk tea to raise club funds. We are also planning a fundraiser for PTP after Thanksgiving, targeted at our school's freshmen health classes.

Club Summaries This past month Carlmont has been collecting donations for UNICEF. We also had a guest speaker from Healthy Cities Tutoring speak at one of our lunch meetings. We had at least one service event each weekend of October, too! For the second lunch meeting in November, San Carlos Mayor Cameron Johnson is coming to give a motivational speech. Carlmont also has six members going to KeyLeader!

Club Summaries In October, we made $200 profit at a successful Lowell Key Club bake sale. The money was used to help members who couldn't afford FRN and the PTP donation. Next, we also had 8th-grade night and which wasn't as successful. We only made $30 profit and ended up giving away most of the chicken that didn't sell. FRN was very hectic in the beginning because we had to pass out all of our merch to our members; in addition, we had a hard time finding our advisor since she doesn't own a cell phone. Also, I'm super happy that Lowell Key Club won club of the month because Lowell has never won club of the month!

Westmoor

These past few months, Westmoor Key Club has been trying to get more involved with helping the community. Just this past weekend, we volunteered at Lake Merced for the Zero Prostate Cancer Run. On November 6th, Westmoor Key Clubbers volunteered at a beach clean up on Ocean Beach which was in partnership with Surf Rider. Lastly, this weekend we will be helping the Salvation Army package Thanksgiving meals for the less fortunate. In October we also partnered with the Unicef club at our school for Trick or Treat for Unicef, where we had members carry boxes for donations to help children. We hope to continue to provide our service to our community in the long run.

Club Summaries This October we decided to have one last fun day at the beach before the winter months start to arrive, so we had a club bonding day where we just hung out at the beach. We also had a lot of people attend FRN this year and this year we had a wide range of grade levels attend (sophomores, juniors, and seniors). We had four service events this month, a beach clean-up, a garden clean-up, a blood drive at our school, as well as Martin Elementary School's annual Halloween Carnival.

Club Summaries On October 28, South San Francisco Key Club volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club Monster Bash along with the Interact Club at our school. So far for the month of November, we have hosted the December DCM and had another Westborough Park Clean-Up. We also have a few volunteer events coming up including the Safeway Holiday Food Drive, Santa Comes to Town, where volunteers will help "Santa" take pictures and give out toys to little kids at city hall; then we will be volunteering at our city's Annual Christmas Food Basket; and lastly Salvation Army Bell Ringing. Also, we have 6 members going to Key Leader this weekend.

San Bruno Mountain

Sylvia Young Aragon Key Club Member This past Saturday, a few Aragon Key Clubbers participated in an event on San Bruno mountain. From 9 am to 11:30 am, we removed many nonnative fennel plants from the hillside which prevented other native plants from growing. The main plant we aimed to protect were the three species of lupin, which were the only plants that an endangered species of butterfly lay their eggs. The plant, however, had trouble growing due to the fennel that covered the area. We spent over two hours clipping and removing dozens of fennel plants across the mountain, preventing the spread of the fennel and giving more room for the lupin to prosper and for the population of the endangered butterfly to grow.

After some quick introductions, the event organizers led us on a long hike up the San Bruno mountains. As we walked up the mountain, they gave us some interesting facts about the endangered species of butterflies and the plants they survive on. For 3 hours, we cut down the invasive species threatening the growth of the native plants using loopers.

Golden Gate Marathon

Kenzia Lenon Lowell Key Club Member My experience at the Golden Gate Marathon was interesting, in a good way. Other than the fact that I had to wake up early, I didn't mind doing so in the end because of how fun it was. I got to meet and talk to new people from the club. Passing out water was harder than I thought because there was a point where there were some many runners and we were running out of cups. In the end, I had fun and I would like to do it again.

Golden Gate Marathon

On Sheng Seto Lowell Key Club Member It was a fun experience with my friends, being able to cheer the runners and help pass out water. I loved how we all worked together as a team. It's nice to be able to help people and give words of encouragement. It was very inspirational and motivating to see so many people trying their best. I love helping our community no matter what it is, and I look forward to working on the next Golden Gate Marathon.

Fall Rally North

Wesley Sheh Lowell Key Club Member FRN was an amazing trip; I got to hang with some of my close friends and we got to go on rides and so on. However, the best part was definitely hugging and meeting new people. It was always funny when someone hugged one of us and skipped the other. And now I'm alright friends with people from FRN.

Fall Rally North

Andy Wu Lowell Key Club Member One of the many events that I went to during my time in Key Club this year was Fall Rally North. FRN allowed me to meet all the other Key Clubs while allowing me to have fun with friends from my own Key Club. Going on the rides with my friends was fun, but I loved the bidding war at the beginning. There was a sense of friendly competition and spirit that made me proud to be part of D34 North. All in all, I met lots of great people from other divisions and I can't wait to have more events like this in the future!

Fall Rally North

Sahana Bhattel Aragon Key Club Member Fall Rally North was a blast! I loved how our division was so spirited and positive. Not only were going on the rides fun but being with kind people to share this memorable experience with. It was also nice having people asking us, “How do you feel? And responding with our catchy cheer. If you didn't attend FRN, I highly suggest you go next year and have an excessive amount of fun.

Fall Rally North

Richard Tang Aragon Key Club Member

We began our day at six flags with the spirit rally; it was held at a large stadium overlooking a lake. The rally began with introductions of the many Kiwanis board members present. Shortly thereafter, the spirit battle began; everyone was really loud and spirited. Even though we were one of the smallest divisions present, we managed to place in the top 5. The rally concluded with an auctioning of the LTG's. After the nearly three-hour long rally, we were allowed to wander around the park. There was a zombie apocalypse event going on; zombies began to roam around the park after sundown. Overall, I had a really great time.

Fall Rally North

Jasper Hua Lowell Key Club Member The first Key Club event I attended was FRN. At first, it was quite hectic at first seeing all the other divisions from around California, but it was nice meeting some of them after the rally. The rally was really fun, even though I knew I felt like I had been in the club for a while already. After the rally, my friends and I dashed to the rides around Six Flags, though we only managed to experience a couple rides we still had a lot of fun. The best part was that around the entire amusement park, there were other people from other divisions around with us, we made new friends.

FRN was my first key club event ever. It was packed with color and spirit, and people were like "HOW DO YOU FEEL?" every minute. When the actual rally started, it felt like the bleachers were gonna break because everyone was jumping so hard. I met a lot of people in our division lining up for the rides. I can't wait to go every year!

Members Talk About Key Club

Andrew Wong Lowell Key Club Member Since joining Key Club, I realized how great of a community it is. I attended FRN and met some other cool key clubbers, and I really enjoyed the experience. After volunteering at Golden gate half marathon, I realized that everyone is really nice and awesome and that volunteering to help the community was made fun thanks to this group. I am very excited for future events since they will help me meet new cool people all while helping my community. Even though I have only been in this club for a short while, it has been a very enjoyable experience so far.

Members Talk About Key Club

Queenie Chen Lowell Key Club Member Although I have only attended meetings and the bake sale before, I have already gotten a general idea of how KEY club is. It is a big group of people who treat each other like family and helps out whenever possible. The bake sale was very fun because I was able to meet different people and feel more like I was part of the KEY community. I was able to help others while having fun, which was exactly what I was hoping I would be able to do while volunteering. I am very thankful for the great opportunity I was given and I am looking forward to volunteering at more events with KEY club.
