Happy December! How is it already the last month of the year?? I would just like to applaud us all for making it through this year despite the circumstances that were given to us. Hopefully, you all had a relaxing Thanksgiving break and now feel energized enough to conquer finals!! I know that distance learning can make it difficult to stay motivated, but you all got this! Remember that this is the final sprint for this semester, and then you are done and holiday break is here! Although it is important to try your best, please remember to take care and prioritize your mental health. Obviously, stress will be a factor for the next two ish weeks but remember that in order to do your best you must also be eating and sleeping properly. Last month, we had a variety of events so thank you all to those who attended! This month, we have an ample amount of festivities lined up in the spirit of the holiday season! Hopefully these events will allow for us all to experience the holiday festivities safely and I hope you all enjoy coming to these events! Lastly, I would just like to thank you all for reading this issue! Please remember to submit your articles and visuals on time as well as the challenge responses. I hope you all have a great holiday, and I will talk to you all in the next issue in the new year!

Thanks,

Amber Chia

Happy Holidays Aqua Apes!

Reaching for the stars of service,

LTG Challenge: What is your favorite accomplishment from this year? (It can be as small as passing a test to a completed longterm project!)

Lieutenant Governor

As we enter the final month of 2020, I hope you all do well on your finals and have a much deserved rest after persevering through this rollercoaster of a year. Just keep pushing for a few more weeks and we’ll be on winter break! I would like to give another reminder that as the Early-Bird/On-Time Dues deadline of December 1st is officially over, this does not mean that you can no longer pay dues! Your club can continue to turn in dues after the deadline, which is highly recommended to help improve your club’s membership goals and expand our Aqua Ape family! By looking through the rest of this amazingly crafted newsletter, you’ll be able to see that we have quite a few service and social events planned for this month! Even though there are many activities offered, I highly suggest that you pick-and-choose which ones you would like to attend in advance, so that you are not burnt out from being online too much! Lastly, I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to all of the members, officers, and the DLT, who have all worked so hard to make this term memorably in such a chaotic year. Without all of your help, we would not be where we are today. We have learned to adjust to an online platform for planning events, member recruitment, and hosting service and fundraising projects. I couldn’t be prouder of each of you for contributing so much to this term, and I can’t wait to see where our dedication takes us next year. See you all in 2021!

Division Secretary

Happy Holidays everyone!! I hope everyone is excited and had an amazing Thanksgiving break, you guys deserved it. If you don’t celebrate these past or incoming holidays, like me, then let’s take this time for self-care or regular family time. The holiday spirit is in the air, I hope you guys have time to relax during this stressful time. Congrats to all the Seniors, if you submitted your UC applications, and I wish you the best. Also, the first semester is almost over, good luck to everyone in finals, get sleep, and work hard, you got this! It’s already December, that’s crazy, we are so close to the end of this difficult year, but I believe you can get through this! I’m thankful to all of you and for your hard work! Always feel free to reach out if you need help! I can’t wait to see you at future events! Remember you’re Bee-utiful!!!

Hey Aqua Apes!

Hope you guys didn’t forget about your resolutions that were made at the beginning of this year. I could not be more ready for this holiday season and am so excited for the events that are to come for this month! It was great to see so many of you guys at division events like Color Kindness or El Camino’s Cranes for Peace. We’re more than halfway through the term and although it has been a strange year so far, I could not be any more proud of the service you have put out. Be on the lookout for a division wide gift exchange and other fun holiday themed events. Remember to put school and your health first! It’s ok to take a step back and give time to yourself. I know finals can be stressful, but I know each and every one of you will do more than great on them. As always, I hope to see you all at some events, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Congratulations to all of you for making it through this tough year, I’m so proud of every single one of you reading this. I know it’s been hard to stay motivated and on top of things during this pandemic but thankfully it’s almost the holiday break! Hopefully you were all able to submit your dues in time for the deadline! And don’t worry, there is still opportunity to pay dues after the first batch is submitted; I highly recommend you promote them to the rest of your club! A big thank you to everyone who’s been going to division events this past month, it’s always lovely seeing and interacting with you guys! Be on the lookout for some fun holiday themed events coming this month to hopefully help with de-stressing! On the topic of stress, I wish you all the best of luck as finals season approaches; if you need a study or ranting buddy you can always contact me! I hope your holiday season is filled with fuzzy blankets and lots of laughs <3

PATCH PROJECT Division Wide Service Event Hosted by Carlmont The Patch Project was a division-wide service event hosted by Carlmont Key Club on Friday, October 2nd. Throughout the two hours, we cut pieces of fabric into heart shapes and sewed them onto a square patch. This was the first time I had picked up a sewing needle and thread in a long time and I definitely had to get used to the process at the beginning but after the first patch, the other two I made were much easier. Unlike other division service events where everyone stayed in the main room, the hosts split us up into smaller breakout rooms with fewer people so it was easier to have a conversation while working on our patches! After finishing up our patches, they were mailed to Enchanted Makeovers where they would make costumes for children with the patch on it. This would allow them to have something of their own in a shelter where many objects are shared which I thought was so sweet! Overall, I had a bunch of fun and learned a lot at this service event. Evan Yang Aragon I attended the October DCM on October 24th. I found the event really fun! We first talked about any old and new information about the club. Then, we went into breakout rooms to do a fun escape room. We played Freerice, BeanBeanBean, and the UNICEF math games. It was especially nice to know that playing each of these games raises donations. The breakout rooms were a fun way to interact with other people. Overall, I found the escape room to be enjoyable, and I hope to do it again someday.

During the District 34 North’s Patch Service Project event, members from the Key Clubs of 14 schools gathered together virtually. Hosted by the Carlmont Key Club, over 75 students made heart patches while bonding in Zoom breakout rooms. The patches were made by sewing a heart cut out from fabric onto another piece of fabric and were then mailed to Enchanted Makeovers, an organization that makes dress-up costumes for kids to play within homeless shelters. Each costume comes with one of the patches, and then the mother will write her child’s name inside the heart. Unlike most things in homeless shelters that are shared, these patches are something that children can truly call their own. The members making the patches enjoyed getting to know new people outside of their schools - even amid the pandemic - and had a great time sewing, knowing that somewhere, children would be filled with joy to receive a special patch made just for them! Alice Finkelstein Carlmont The patch project service event hosted by Carlmont Key Club was a blast! The idea of being able to sow heart shape patches for single mothers and children in shelters was very heartwarming. The idea of being able to give children in the shelter something they might own for the very first time since they usually share stuff at the shelter makes it really meaningful to make. I hope we could do more service events like this in the future:) Irene Lee Westmoor

Katarina Povinec Carlmont

For the Together We Rise event, club members had to write cards for Foster Care kids. This was my first ever key club event I ever attended and I really enjoyed it! The cards were going to the Together We Rise organization and written on the cards were kind messages and we got to decorate them too. I was pretty proud of my cards, I had enough time to make six of them and I made them all Sanrio themed. At the end of the meeting, we were given the chance to write the address of the organization to be able to mail it. Thank you Together We rise and I genuinely enjoyed my first key club event and I can’t wait to continue being part of this club! Gaby Ejercito Aragon

At Aragon’s Together We Rise service project, the division made encouraging cards for foster kids. Personally, I enjoyed the various icebreakers and getting to know other members outside of my club. Also, it was exciting to see members of my home club participating in events despite the school year being relatively new. Because the focus was specifically intended for children, it was really helpful and inspiring when making drawings for the cards. Espeally since Key Club focuses on charities benefiting children, it was a great opportunity to expand our rvice outside of funds and through providing positivity through thoughtful cards. On behalf of the agon officer board, thank you to everyone who came and we hope you had fun!

ystal Chu agon

n and interactive service event hosted by Aragon that I thoroughly enjoyed participating in. On this e participants made different types of cards with uplifting and positive messages to accompany en. I have attended various card making service events in the past, but this particular event was ted atmosphere and the kindness of everyone who attended. It feels great to know that just by a simple card, you could make someone’s day so much brighter and give them hope for the fuate in another event like this in the future and I think that it is a great and fulfilling way to earn seric but would still like to help the community.

October DCM

9

We started the October DCM by having a costume contest and going over club updates. Then, we went into the service portion which was a service escape room. We were put into breakout rooms of 5 to 6 people to solve it. The first 3 challenges were the service portion. We played math games, bean for bean, and freerice each for around 15 minutes to help out and donate as much as possible. Even though it can get boring playing the same game over and over again, it is really nice knowing that all our hard work is going to help others and is important. Overall, I had a lot of fun at the October DCM. Malia Malden Aragon

The October DCM escape room was truly an inventive way to incorporate both the service social aspects of Key Club. While service is Key Club’s main focus, it’s important to establish bonds with other inspiring, thoughtful individuals in order to improve oneself as an individual: the October DCM did just that. Personally, my breakout room bonded with each other over Halloween music and figuring out the clues for the escape room. The interactive game proved to make answering simple questions fun even though sometimes it may feel strenuous without company. I greatly enjoyed getting to know my own club members as well as those outside of my home club since the online aspect of service projects definitely make it harder to interact with others. However, I am greatly appreciative of all the consideration put into establishing such a successful service/social DCM! Crystal Chu Aragon

The October DCM was super fun to plan even with the added challenge of trying to incorporate service into the escape room. The escape room included FreeRice, UNICEF Math games, and BeanBeanBean. The participants would have to get a certain amount of rice, money, and beans to get clues to escape the room. After they completed all three tasks they had to figure out the last clues to the code and even then there were a few rooms to take them off track. I really hope that everyone who came had a fun time and was able to get to know the small group a little better! Anna Abelgas Aragon

Mills Breast Canc

The Mills Breast Cancer Awareness event was a very educational and relaxing event to end the school week with. I was able to learn a lot of facts about breast cancer and its effect in the US through the presentation and links they provided. I also had a fun time painting my pumpkins and making cards for the patients. This event was especially special to me because two of my family members have gone through breast cancer and it was really nice seeing a lot of other key clubbers avidly learning and supporting breast cancer awareness and patients. I want to thank Mills for choosing to host this event and spread awareness about this horrible disease as well as hope for those affected by it. Courtney Tai Aragon

I attended the Breast Cancer Awareness Event, where we were taught lots of interesting facts about breast cancer, then got to paint and decorate pumpkins and wrote letters to breast cancer patients. I worked on the letters during the event, which was really fun to do because I had never written letters like these before. Cancer is always something that’s hard to deal with, so to help someone while they’re struggling with the illness means a lot to me because I know it’s difficult for them. Since COVID has taken over our lives, I’ve had lots of free time that I want to spend helping people. It’s my first year with Key Club, and I’m already very happy with it. Even though I’m a new member, I’m already having lots of fun at the events, and more importantly, volunteering my time to help people! Julia Barbosa Carlmont

cer Awareness

On October 30th, I attended Mill’s Breast Cancer Awareness where we had the option to either write positive messages on pumpkins or write a letter. I decided to write a letter where I wrote an overall positive letter to the receiving patient. I thought it was a cool event since my letter that I wrote and decorated will be given to someone in need. Overall, it was a fun event and would definitely do more letter writings in the future. Sean Sygaco El Camino During the Breast Cancer Awareness Division-wide Event hosted by Mills High School, participants were given a presentation on breast cancer and how it can affect a variety of people. It was very informative and I was able to learn more about Breast cancer. There were many participants from different schools all over our division that came and took part in this event. During the event, participants were able to choose from 2 different service projects. One of the service projects was a pumpkin painting project where participants would paint pumpkins pink and write Breast cancer encouragements and facts on the pumpkin. Since not everyone had pumpkins, some even painted on rocks. These pumpkins and rocks could later be displayed on doorsteps spreading awareness of Breast cancer. The second service project was a Letter Writing project. The letter that was written would later be sent to breast cancer patients to give them encouragement. I thought that this event was a really great way for club members all over the division to get to know each other. During ice-breaker breakout sessions, we discussed what the worst thing we ever got while trick-or-treating and this caused many laughs. Throughout the event, Disney themed Halloween songs were played in the background which really allowed for people to bond with each other. Serena Choi Mills

Club Summary Aragon: For the month of November Aragon Key Club continued to have weekly meetings. We attended the San Mateo Color for Kindness and El Camino’s Cranes for World Peace. Both events were super fun and our members created a lot of cool cards and cranes. We also attended the Member Recognition and Graphics workshop hosted by Kristen and Anni which was very informative. We hosted a leadership workshop with Kristen, Landon, our IP president Ellen Batsuri as guest speakers. As of right now we just plan to go to the November DCM.

Carlmont:

- Anna Abelgas

Over the past month of October we’ve been holding weekly club meetings and service events including an interclub event with Hillsdale and Notre Dame. We also had two guest speakers: Warren Lieberman Mayor of Belmont and past District Treasurer Kristie Poon!! We attended Key Club internationals first global rally and participated in trick or treat for unicef. And we’re excited for the rest of the term!

El Camino:

- Ashley Zheng

During the month of October, our club has continued to roll out a lot of service opportunities and encourage club participation. Throughout the whole month, we’ve advertised donations to UNICEF and promoted it during our Among Us Costume Party. This costume party was also our first club social with the newly recruited members, and it was very successful in helping members bond with each other since it is more difficult to bond when over Zoom. As usual, there have been in-person food distribution service opportunities every Wednesday from 9 to 11 AM. There are always anywhere from five to seven members attending this, which is great! We also recognize that not everyone has the ability to go to in-person activities, so we also advertise service opportunities over Zoom, such as the division-wide service events. Overall, this month was very productive in earning service hours and improving the bond for our members.

Hillsdale:

13

- Alex Quemuel

In the month of October, Hillsdale Key Club had members attend events such as the Breast Cancer Awareness DWE, Global Kahoot Fundraiser, and the Patch Project. Some of our members and officers also attended the October DCM. Additionally, we held an interclub event with Notre Dame and Carlmont, as well as a club service event where we did free rice and free kibble while watching a movie. We also held weekly club meetings and occasional board meetings. Lastly, we continued to educate members on dues and the benefits of becoming a dues paid member.

- Emilia Schalch

Jefferson:

October marked the first month Jefferson had an in-person service event. Although not advertised by our school or our club, many Key Club members came out to volunteer at Jefferson’s Food Bank. Additionally, our club continues to host service events every other week after our General Meetings, as we continue to have solid participation from our members. Beyond group events, our club was very active this month, as our members continued participating in AtlasGo and Charity Miles. Our member participation has catapulted Jefferson to #1 on Banana Points, and we are showing no signs of slowing down! For the upcoming month of November, our officers plan on continuing our fundraiser, changing the frequency of our meetings, introducing our club hoodie/crew neck, and possibly advertise an in-person event for Jefferson’s Food Bank. Another solid month of service from our dedicated members.

Lowell:

- Carlos Menendez

Mills

- Jasmine Bao

Notre Dame

- Kaelyn Fung

During the month of October, Lowell participated in numerous division events such as Together We Rise, The Patch Project, and The Breast Cancer Awareness DWS Event. We also held our first division event called Games for Gains where we participated in UNICEF’s Math for Good Challenge and Free Rice program. Through this event, we raised money to support children’s education and earned rice which would go to the World Food Programme. Aside from division events, we also held an interclub with Aragon, Sequoia, and Saint Ignatius called The Rainbow Project where we wrote seasonal letters to members of the LGBTQ+ community all the way in the United Kingdom. Towards the end of the month, we held a bonding and service event where we participated in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF over our club Discord and played Among Us following the service portion. We are currently planning ways to incorporate service into our general meetings, have more bonding events, and also host a fundraiser. We will be attending division events like always and we will also be having an interclub with South City, El Camino, and Westmoor.

This past month we held two club meetings and one board meeting. We’ve finished planning our PTP fundraiser and have started advertising it. We had a couple of members participate in the San Mateo Color with Kindness as well. We also host the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Division Wide Event and had many of our own members attend. We have also raised a total of 313 dollars for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. In November we plan to continue our PTP fundraiser as well as attend the cranes for World peace. We are also planning a week longs service event that has different service projects throughout the week so members can earn service hours during holidays.

This October was a busy month for us, and we are so glad to have attended so many events! We participated in several Division events, Interclub events, and club level events as well. On October 7th, we had a general club meeting that included a service portion in which 23 members gathered and made bookmarks that were donated to School on Wheels. We also attended Division Wide Service Projects and events: we participated in “Together We Rise” hosted by Aragon Key Club on October 10th, Lowell Key Club’s “Games for Grains” on October 17th, and attended the October DCM on October 24th. In addition to Club and Division level events, NDB Key Club also participated in Interclub Service Events; October 15th was our Interclub event with Aragon, Burlingame, and South San Francisco, “Pillowcases for PTP”, and October 23rd was our Interclub with Carlmont and Hillsdale, “Lunch Bags for Meals on Wheels.” We have continued meeting bi-weekly and we plan to include a service or social portion in each meeting going forward. We are excited for future events and look forward to planning more of our own!

- Alyssa Enriquez

14

San Mateo: In October, we continued our weekly Friday meetings. We also started collecting dues from our members. Many of our members participated in this month’s service events such as the Patch Project, Together we Rise, the UNICEF Challenge, and the Breast Cancer Awareness. This month we’ve been focusing on engaging with our members (especially our newly recruited members) with fun games at the beginning of each of our meetings such as Kahoot, Jeopardy, and scavenger hunts. Our board members also focused on planning multiple events that are coming up in November.

Sequoia:

-Danielle Richards

For the month of October, Sequoia’s Key Club helped the Food Bank Harvest distribute food to families by putting boxes of food into their cars as well as taking down their information. We had our first in-club event where made cards for teachers as a way of expressing our gratitude towards them. We also attended the Together We Rise service event by Aragon and had an interclub with Aragon, SI, and Lowell for The Rainbow Card Project. We made cards for the lgbtq+ community! Sequoia’s Key Club also had a park clean for one of our brand new local parks. We helped clean it up as well as help with the gardening. We attended the monthly DCM and had a lot of fun and also had our weekly school club meetings where we informed students about upcoming events and how they could get engaged with Key Club.

- Sharon Portillo

South San Francisco:

For the past month, we had our club visitation with Kristen, attended DWS projects like Color Kindness, Cranes for Peace and more! We also have held some mini projects after club meetings like Freerice, Math for Good, and Beanbeanbean! We teamed up with other service clubs at South City to host a club bonding where we made hot chocolate bombs and brownies while watching “Elf”! We also hosted an interclub with Lowell, Westmoor, and El Camino where we made E-Cards for different kinds of workers! We also hosted our own mini bonding within our club during our game night where we played Among Us and played Skribbl.io! We are also in the process of planning fundraisers and service projects for late November and December! We are looking forward to this holiday season for new projects, bondings, and more!

Westmoor:

- Caroline Narcisco

For the past month, we are focusing on working out details to make our club better. Our Club Rush was successful and caused a rise in membership in the past month. We paid dues for officers and some members. For our bi-monthly general meetings this month we trick or treat for UNICEF and host some festive events. We try our best in making our meeting unique and having fun activities for our members and officers. Also, we had an interclub with El Camino, South City, and Lowell, and it was an amazing time. Lastly, we want to thank everyone who attended our Divison Wide event! We hope to continue surfing the waves of service, through the holiday season.

Amazing Apes Member of the Month

Mallory Moore (Notre Dame)

Mallory is new to Key Club, but she has consistently attended meetings and participated in both club level and Division Level events since the beginning of her freshman year this year. She has put in a lot of her time and effort into the club already, and our club is so excited to see her grow!

Officer of the Month

Irene Lee (Westmoor) Irene Lee is a dedicated officer who spends their free time working to make our club better. She does so much from attending all the events, recruiting a majority of our new members (including her little brother), and always goes beyond what is required of her. Without a word she knows what to do. Also, her creativity is out of this world with her amazing graphics. She defines what a leader is: hard working, dedicated, and passionate.

Advisor of the Month:

Daniel Arzaga (Westmoor) He is always there and happy to help in any situation. He attends every meeting, and is glad to participate in activities and games with members. He allows us to take control as leaders, however we can always feel his support behind us.

Aragon

The Club of the Month for November is Aragon! Their officers have worked so hard all year to help their club grow; seeing the improvement they have made throughout this term is amazing. dne challenge: What was your most memorable moment from this year?

Leadership Showcase GOVERNOR

LIEUTENANT

What is a fun fact about you? My favorite shape is a hexagon, most likely because I was exposed to so many in Key Club! I have hexagon shaped earrings that I wear all the time

Why did you decide to run for LTG? I decided to run because I knew I wanted to take a larger role in serving this amazing Division. A few people inspired me to work hard and run for the role, and I knew I didn’t want to let them down.

Kristen Carpio What was your experience with key club prior to becoming LTG? I didn’t get super involved until I applied for the Division Leadership Team Spring of my Freshman year (2018). During the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 term I served as an Executive Assistant. During the 19-20 term I also served Notre Dame as their President! Each role helped me learn more about myself and the people I graciously get to work with.

What is your favorite part about being LTG? This was incredibly hard to choose, but my favorite part about being LTG is simply getting to know all of the incredible people within our Division. We all come from such different backgrounds and communities, but it is so heartwarming to see all of us come together for service projects or socials. There is truly nothing better than seeing you all make new friends, memories, and seeing a lasting impact in the communities that we serve.

What are your main responsibilities as LTG? My main responsibilities entail serving as a liaison between the California-Nevada-Hawaii District and our Division, mostly through sharing information and opportunities that I hear about. I also work with all 15 of our ape-mazing clubs to serve all of our members. A third main responsibility is overseeing the Division Leadership Team, which consists of our hardworking Executive Assistants, Division Newsletter Editor, Division Secretary, Coordinators, and Committee Members.

How do you run for LTG? (Process and deadlines) I first ran for LTG in January of my Sophomore year, so during my second time around in January 2020, I was much more prepared. I first attended Candidate Training Conference (CTC), which is an event that the current LTGs put together to inform prospective LTGs of what the position entails. I also filled out plenty of paperwork and met with my advisors and principal to discuss the duties of the role. Most importantly, I wrote and practiced a speech that I would deliver on the day of Conclave. This last step, in addition to creating a graphic literature showcasing my experience and goals, definitely took the longest.
