Hello all!

Lieutenant Governor
From your Aloha Aqua Apes!
Welcome to the first newsletter produced by Division Newsletter Editor Amber! Another school year has come and gone and we finally made it. I hope that you all survived through the weird processes of AP testing and the final projects assigned at the end of the school year. I know that it can be really stressful, even without the weird situation that we have going on, so I’m extremely proud of everyone for persevering. With the start of summer comes a lot of service and social events (online of course)! Keep an eye out for all of the fun events that are coming that are currently planned by the Division Leadership Team. I know they are all excited to get to know everyone better and are taking advantage of the ability to connect with everyone through Zoom. Another upcoming event for this month is our annual Key Club Training Conference, which will be with all of the divisions within Region 17! I am super excited and will be releasing more details shortly. Even though this term began with an interesting start, I know that our division will make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our clubs are filled with driven Key Clubbers who know that community service is always possible, just with the help of some creativity. I look forward to meeting all of you, whether that be through an online event or eventually in person. If you want to get to know me better, feel free to send me an email or a text anytime!
Reaching for the stars of service,
Kristen Carpio

spirit coordinator Hello,
My name is Luis Solidum from Jefferson High School and I am very excited to serve Division 34 North as both Vice President of Kiwanis Relations and Division Spirit Coordinator. On my free time I really enjoy playing video games and dancing, but first and foremost I enjoy helping others. Two fun facts about me is that I joined Key Club just this year and I have enough hours on PS4 to self teach a language.

service/ fundraising coordinator
Hi!
My name is Lisa Nguyen and I’m proud to be able to serve as your Service & Fundraiser Coordinator in my senior year. I only joined Key Club mid way through junior year and I’ve honestly been baffled by the dedication and warmth this division holds. I truly hope we get to gather soon so we can see each other while serving our community. For now, we’ll settle with Zoom meetings all day every day. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for us fellow key clubbers!

Member of the Month: Finley Liquete This person is a dedicated member of their club, and actively attends all meetings. They participated in the Region 17 Spirit Week challenges and they even attended some of the Officer Training Conferences to learn more about what each position does! Overall this person has a lot of spirit for the division and Key Club overall.
Officer of the Month: May Cho This person never hesitates to help their fellow officers and is an essential part of their club’s board. They are always finding ways to improve their club and is a natural leader that always tries to find the best in people. They are always working hard to help their club grow and makes the job of the other officers a lot easier.
Club of the Month: Jefferson This club had the most service hours for this month, which totaled 71 hours. I can always see that they’re working hard to find service events even during the shelter in place. They’ve been organizing plenty of board and club meetings which is helping them stay connected, and I can tell that each member and officer is working very hard to improve their club.
Advisor of the Month: George Kranen This advisor always goes out of their way to help the clubs they oversee improve, whether that be through sorting through their MRFs or attending board and club meetings. Also, they always encourage their members and officers to step out of their comfort zones to try new things, and is extremely supportive along the way.

Spirit Week April 26- May 2
From April 26 to May 2, South San Francisco participated in the Region 17 Spirit Week. The entire week was so fun doing different things and posting them on social media, like Instagram. My favorite for sure was Spirit Sunday because I haven’t dressed up since FRN season and it was so fun getting into spirit gear for the first time in a long time. Another favorite was TikTok Thursday because my club learned TikTok dance together and it was super fun as our secretary, Andrew Ta, taught us the dance over Zoom. Overall, it was a super fun week and I really enjoyed participating! Author Unknown South San Francisco Key Club
The first virtual spirit week I participated in was probably the Region 17 one. It was strange but honestly really enjoyable. It was easier to participate in, given we were all in the comfort of our houses. Our club communicated a lot on each day and it was nice to see what all the other clubs did. I especially liked Mail Monday since it was a simple way to show our thanks towards mail carriers. Overall, the week was very fun and it made the lockdown more enjoyable.

May Cho Westmoor Key Club
DCM May 2 I attended the May DCM and the service event. It was very fun seeing everyone being involved and being in great spirits. I was able to play Scribbl.io with people I haven’t met before and it was way better than I expected it to go. After that, I stayed and made a dog toy out of an old t-shirt. It was hard to learn how to braid, but I got it and it was a fun experience. Lawrence Wu Westmoor Key Club
I attended the May DCM via Zoom on May 2nd, where we discussed important upcoming events and crafted objects using anything available in our homes. We began the meeting with the presidents of each club stating the ideas and contributions they made. The D34N division leader then announced any future events that can help people who have suffered during the crisis. Subsequently, we played a few games of Skribbl.io before moving on to our last activity of the meeting and one of the acts of service for the month, which was making chew toys for dogs. These were made out of shirts that were cut and braided together. We showed the toys we made through our cameras, where the meeting ended thereafter. Darren Chen Westmoor Key Club

Cranes for a Cure
On November 26, 2014, two parents lost their son, Joey Xu, to Xp11.2 translocation renal cell carcinoma, a rare form of kidney cancer. Inspired by Joey’s passion for origami, Joey’s parents decided to start a mission to raise funds for pediatric cancer research as well as to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. Joey’s parents created Cranes for a Cure, a mission where they started selling paper crane mobiles. The proceeds they received through selling origami paper crane mobiles are funded to pediatric cancer research. Donations for paper crane materials as well as folded paper cranes are immensely apppreciated by them. Mills Key Club decided to host a division-wide event on Zoom in hopes of positively impacting this organization, especially during these difficult times. Volunteers had the opportunity to fold origami cranes and donate them to the organization, Joey’s Wings. Overall, volunteers had a pleasant time folding the paper cranes while knowing their contribution would help to create the goals of Joey’s Wings a reality. Amber Chia Carlmont Key Club

Free Rice Westmoor and Jefferson Through the website Free Rice, we are able to donate grains of rice for answering simple questions and getting them correct. The use of a leader board amongst clubs and our club members make such commendable acts seem like a friendly and fun competition. Those who are in need of such grains and food become amplified in a time like this and the thought of me being able to help makes me feel good. Oscar Lei Jefferson Key Club
During these hard and challenging times, I am fortunate to get volunteer hours. Staying at home and not having the option to go out can be extremely exhausting and boring. Despite the fact that I don’t get the opportunity to socialize and meet others while volunteering, I am very grateful that I get to assist in any way that I can. I got my hours this month from house chores to email check-ins with teachers. Also, I associated myself to the Free Rice website to donate rice to the people in need by answering trivia questions. I consider this as an advantage for everyone. I learn about different topics while donating rice and getting my volunteer hours. It is exceptionally hard for everybody at this time therefore, any contributory act, whether it be big or small, can be helpful. Florence Thwe Westmoor Key Club

Mask Making Jefferson During these trying times, my mother and I realized that many first responders and the general population are without proper protection against Covid-19. In response, Jefferson gave out the opportunity for 30 minutes per mask and as there is no limit to service previously set no limit on masks. I was able to make 210 Masks throughout the month, that will be donated to friends, family, and those who have become at risk to COVID. To do service at such a harsh time in society truly feels good and I thoroughly enjoy it. Luis Solidum Jefferson Key Club
Lowell Volunteering for MFACA took a lot of effort, yet felt very gratifying. I had a contactless drop off of an envelope with around 3 yards of fabric to my door. Although, it was a little difficult because they mixed up contacts, so I didn’t know they were coming beforehand. But after school, I spent around 3 hours tediously cutting the fabric into 6 inch by 9 inch rectangles for the masks. It felt great to know there are still ways to give back through service during this quarantine.

Cutter Point of View
Mask Making
Carlmont Key Club had recently started a project to make homemade masks for our brave, selfless frontline workers. Within the first three weeks we had sewn over 70 masks and cut over 300 sets of fabric. Volunteers were able to take one of three roles: cutter, sewist, or driver. Me not having a sewing machine or a car, I naturally decided to take on the part as a cutter. The drivers soon delivered fabrics that they placed outside of my front door in a zip lock bag. I was very eager to get started on the project. Being stuck at home all day motivated me to give back to my community in any way possible. I thought to myself,“If others are risking their own lives to save others, stock our grocery stores, and to volunteer, then I should do my best to contribute as well.
Carlmont
Later that week, I had cut the fabric into ten by six-inch rectangles. Milad, one of our drivers, came to pick up the bag of pre-cut fabrics I had cut. I felt delighted that I was able to help members in our community during this dire time in our lives. I have always believed that doing a service doesn’t mean you have to do some large, extravagant event. Instead, I always felt that doing small acts of kindness make the most significant impact. Claire Tseng Carlmont Key Club
Sewist Point of View These past few weeks, I have spent hours sewing masks. I learned to use a sewing machine for this project, and it has helped me tremendously. My first few masks did not turn out that good, but as I kept going, I improved. I intend to keep making masks until I run out of materials to do so. This project feels special to me because it enables me to put my time at home towards a good cause. Although I am at home, I can still impact others through this project. In addition, my sister is an EMT, and I wanted to do my part to help society just like she has done. Making masks has taught me that service knows no bounds, and I am happy to be a part of it. Club Summary
Aragon:
This past month of April, Aragon Key Club had our first official meeting on the 23rd and plan to have one every two weeks. We had 3 members at the service event for writing letters, and 3 people attend the CNH awards live stream. As a way for members to earn service hours, we offer them 30 minutes of service for every 500 grains of rice they earn through freerice.com. They also can earn 30 minutes of service by making a poster showing appreciation for essential workers! In May, we are preparing for Aragon Key Club’s 15 year anniversary and are inviting alumni to attend. We also are planning on having a board meeting soon to set goals for the upcoming term.
-Courtney Tai
Carlmont:
As we are still experiencing a shelter in place, we’ve decided to concentrate all of our efforts into creating virtual events for our members for service hours. Our biggest event has been the Mask Making Project, where we have worked diligently to coordinate a contact free delivery of fabrics to our volunteers, as well as contacted Kaiser Physical Therapy Department, The Caring Cupboard & Carlmont high-school staff to be the recipients of our donation. We’ve recently coordinated a virtual event for March for Babies where we wrote letters of hope in support of families with babies in the NICU. Currently, the Mask Making Project is ongoing with weekly deliveries/ drop off of masks occurring. Meanwhile, we are coordinating other virtual letter writing events. We will be writing letters in support of the campaign as it seeks to reduce isolation among seniors at the Senior Coastsiders in Half-Moon Bay. Additionally, we are coordinating for Carlmont Key Club to assist-volunteer for virtual story time for children in the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. Lastly, our members development committee have been working very hard to present a virtual presentation for Ralston Middle schoolers, soon to be freshmen, in order to recruit them to join Carlmont Key Club for fall of 2020.
Hillsdale:
- Lisa Ngyuen
This past month, Hillsdale Key Club held a club meeting over Zoom to share the information presented at the last DCM. Club secretary, Isabella Murray, hosted the meeting and explained different service opportunities while we’re in shelter in place including the WFP free rice project and letter writing. The club officers also attended the officer trainings and I organized a google folder for resources the officers can use. Coming up, we’re just going to continue looking for service our members can do from home and attend the online division events like DCMs.

Jefferson: During the month of April Jefferson Key Club as we are in our second month of quarantine. Our officer group has been trying to find ways to increase club-member activity. Yet in these trying times, member inactivity is very understandable. Many volunteer opportunities remain virtual as of late April, and opportunities to help while remaining safe, are very limited. With that in mind, everyone should be more considerate of what they are asking from their members and realize that our chances of SAFELY “volunteering” are limited to non-contact activities. With that in mind, our officers will continue to find small activities for our members and to find ways to keep in touch with them. However, at the end of the day, there are more important tasks for our members to focus their attention on; all we can do is to continue to mindfully encourage and support our members.
Lowell:
- Luis Solidum
This past month we participated in letter writing events such as the division letter drive and the Sagebrook letter drive. We’ve also been partnering up with a teen-run organization called Masks For All CA which is producing and distributing masks to local communities. We have been helping them with cutting materials for prep and some of our members have volunteered to help with sewing masks as well. Aside from events, we’ve held our first meeti ng of the term and have also participated in Region 17’s Spirit Week! We are currently still working with Masks for All CA and Sagebrook which will likely last until the end of this quarantine as an ongoing project. Moving forward, we plan on holding more meetings and looking for more online methods of service work as what we have right now is mostly physical. We are hoping to start member recruitment for the upcoming school year soon!
Notre Dame:
- Jasmine Bao
Last month, Notre Dame Key Club organized a service event for our club called “Letters for Sisters”; members of the club wrote letters to the Sisters of Notre Dame who are currently living in isolation due to COVID-19. We have also been attending division wide events such as Letter Writing and Officer Training Conferences. In addition to attending events, the Board decided to appoint Coordinator Positions; applications closed on April 24, and the Board selected candidates to fill these positions on May 6 during a Board Meeting. Notre Dame Key Club now has a Public Outreach Coordinator and two Event Coordinators. During this month, we have been attending division wide events such as the May DCM and Cranes for a Cure. During the next month, we plan to research ways to do service from home so that we may continue to help others despite these circumstances.

San Mateo:
This month served as a transition month for our club from our old leadership into our new leadership. Due to that, we focused a lot of our time into leadership training and well as the recruitment and training of new members. We started a routine of having Friday weekly virtual meetings on Discord. We encouraged our members to participate in the April DCM. We also made our formerly inactive Instagram page active again by participating in Region 17’s spirit week. By participating in spirit week our members gained service hours through Mail Monday, Wholesome Wednesday, and Service Saturday.
-Danielle Richards
South San Francisco This past month we have been holding club meetings, as well as board meetings over Zoom. We have participated in Region 17 Spirit Week and in Eliminate week. Several members attended division events such as Division Letter Writing, and both the April and May DCMs! We are continuing to hold weekly meetings and do online service events like Free Rice, card making, and making masks. This upcoming month we plan on continuing what we have been doing, and beginning to advertise Key Club after AP testing and the end of the school year so people will have things to do during the summer!
-Caroline Narciso
Westmoor:
For the past month, we have been trying to find new ways to encourage service at home and attending any online events possible. We attended the April DCM, as well as the officer training conference and the Division Letter Writing Event. We also offer many volunteering activities from Free Rice to simply just helping out your parents. Our At Home Service Events hopefully keeps up the spirits of our members and officers to continue surfing the waves of service. And we have been hosting weekly general meetings to give updates and have fun with our members. We have done everything from playing Spyfall to writing mother’s day cards. Next month we plan to find more creative ways to have service at home and attend other DWS. Also to follow our school schedule we’ll be having our last weekly general meeting in May, and we are having it once a month in the summer. We’re planning more Inter-Club events soon. And we may even have our own DWS.
