Happy New Years, Aqua Apes! Wow. It’s been quite a year, hasn’t it? Congratulations to all of you for getting through such a tough year. Seniors, I know it’s the last stretch for you guys! I’m in this with you. Let’s push through! I hope everyone had a terrific winter break and a happy New Years! As for Key Club updates, remember to look out for the division contests and district contests deadlines coming up. Also, elections for the new Lieutenant Governor is nearing, as well! If you signed up for the Hot Cocoa Run, make sure you attend (it’s mandatory!). For this newsletter edition, look out for the articles and visuals, division updates, amazing apes, banana points updates, and DNE/LTG challenges, as usual. In this issue, a poem is featured on page 18 for Advisor George, written by Julie Weiss. Please read it or share it to people around you! Lastly, I wanted to say that I am sorry for not publishing exactly on the first! I am currently doing final edits for my college essays (there’s so many supplementals!!!), so the end of December and the beginning of January has been very hectic for me! I promise to up the quality and add new graphics to the following newsletter edition. Thanks, and see you all soon!

Cheers,

A Message From Your

Greetings, Aqua Apes! Congratulations on making it through 2021 and finishing strong. We did it! I'm so proud of everything our division was able to accomplish and adapt to this year; from adjusting to in-person events to beating our original fundraising goal, we've grown so much in the past year and it's been incredible to witness it. Believe it or not, we're in the final four months of the term, and a new LTG elect will be elected soon :0 It's cliche but time really has flown by. I wanted to thank you all for your hard work this past year and encourage you all to keep it up. The term isn't over quite yet, so we still have time to reach our division goals and continue attending events! We have many to look forward to in the coming months so make sure to read through the newsletter to see what they are. As we approach conclave and our election of the next Lt. Governor, I want to remind everyone that there is NO CAMPAIGNING as a candidate or on behalf of candidates. If that is seen happening, the candidate gets a warning or is disqualified from the election, so please don't treat this lightly. To everyone running, I wish you the best of luck! If you wish to serve as a delegate at conclave, contact your club president for more information :) Lastly, the deadline for district/division contests is approaching fast, so make sure to get started on those and don't save the e-portfolios for the last minute! Have a happy new year and cheers to a fantastic 2022!

Thanks,

Courtney Tai

5. Happy New Year’s, Aqua Apes! I hope you guys had an amazing winter break and got to spend your two weeks off to chill with friends and family! This year went by so fast and I am super proud of what we accomplished throughout the year. We are pushing through our service and fundraising goals, so keep up the good work everyone. Also, it was awesome to see you guys at the December DCM as well as Holiday-a-thon and I hope you guys had fun going to these events. With the new year, let's continue to be the best we can be in this division, so keep on a lookout for new service and fundraising activities. Also, Division and District contests are still going on, so I strongly suggest you guys apply because ya'll deserve to be recognized for your hard work. Just make sure to not procrastinate on it because the deadlines will become closer! Anyways, have an amazing new years and I would like to thank all of you guys for making 2021 very memorable. I'm proud of all of you. As always, let me know if you have any questions or just want to talk. :)

Thanks! Sean Sygaco Executive Assistant 122017ss@gmail.com

Hello! This past month has been very exciting, with lots of holiday-themed events for our division! We had our DCM, and at the time of writing this, the Holiday-A-Thon and Hot Chocolate Run are yet to come. Both events sound very exciting and I'm hoping that the people who go are able to have fun! For me, I feel like the school year has flown by. However, at the time of writing this, I am drowning in finals. I hope all of you were able to do well on your finals and can relax on your winter break! I can't wait to start this new year off well, and I hope to see you all soon.

Thanks! Kristi Xia Executive Assistant kxia23@ndhsb.org

6. Hi Aqua Apes! I hope you had a great winter break and got some good rest post-finals. Happy New Year! I am so incredibly excited for what this new year has to bring us with events like District Convention and Banquet as we're almost at the end of this term. This also means that contest deadlines are coming up so I highly encourage you all to apply if you're eligible to. Applying to contests and looking into other forms of member recognition is a great way to boost your resume, plus you learn a lot along the way! To my seniors: good luck again with the rest of your college apps, I believe in you!!!

Thank You! Jasmine Bao Division Secretary jasbao777@gmail.com

Hello, Aqua Apes! I am writing this during my last finals period but I just know that you guys all killed all of your finals and you got 100s on all of them! I know I did....... Anyways I really hope that you guys all use this winter break to recover from this really long semester of not only school work and your personal extracurriculars, but lots of service and fundraising and tons of key club events. Please spend time with your friends and family this holiday season and I hope you had a great holiday celebration! For me personally, in this next semester, I want to give 100% effort into everything and to not fall behind in school which I know can be really challenging. Those 5 chapters of APUSH notes don't come out of nowhere, you have to put in the effort to accomplish your tasks. Holiday-A-Thon was the best event Key Club International has ever had and it was the most memorable experience in my life, truly my peak. Anyways, Happy New Year guys!!

Good Luck <3 John Hillyard Executive Assistant jshihillyard@gmail.com

feed the need The Safeway Feed the Need event was a blast! Volunteers stood by the entrance of Safeways and handed out flyers to shoppers. These flyers asked shoppers to donate $10 to help (Second Harvest Food Bank) purchase food packages for those in need. Many who came to Safeway were extremely excited about donating and providing a Thanksgiving meal for others. I loved how the event related to the current holiday season. I would definitely recommend this event for anyone who wants to meet and interact with other key clubbers or help a Thanksgiving meal get to one more family.

MANDY MAH

One of the annual events that I participated in recently, on November 20, is the Safeway Nourishing Neighbors food drive hosted by NBC Bay Area in partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, to help feed families in need. At this event, 22 volunteers from Carlmont Key Club and its sponsor San Carlos Kiwanis, worked together in two Safeway stores. We handed out flyers and $10 donation coupons to encourage Safeway shoppers to donate $10 for the local needy families upon checkout. In return, Safeway put a bag of pre-packed basic food items into the Second Harvest of Silicon Valley's food barrels. So many of the Safeway shoppers take our flyers and as they leave the store let us know that they donated and appreciate our work. It feels great! This event gives Key Club members the opportunity to work together on such a worthy cause, and in my case to do it with my grandfather.

Half Marathon & 5k

The Golden Gate Half Marathon & 5K was an exciting event to volunteer at. When we arrived, we were told that we would be managing and checking in bags for runners who need a place to put their things. A few members worked at tables in the front of the check-in area to help runners put their belongings in a bag, while other members organized the bags by their assigned numbers. Organizing the bags greatly helped giving them back to the runners when they were finished with the marathon. Overall, it was a thrilling event, and I hope to volunteer for something similar in the future.

DARREN CHEN

We had recently hosted one of our first in person volunteer events outside of the school and it was a success and quite a surprise. We were supposed to be handing out water but the positions for it had already been filled up. We instead had been assigned to bag rental duty. Although it was last minute I enjoyed interacting with the runners after the marathon. We even bonded with some people at Lowell.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s was Lowell’s first in-person interclub of the term and first of two for that weekend! Along with Jefferson, we supported walkers by cheering with signs and mini kettlebells throughout the route. It was fun to hype each other up as well and ultimately add to the positive energy of the event. It’s always a great event to attend and an even greater cause to support. And in true aqua ape fashion, we received bananas in appreciation for all our hard work!

run Mermaid Run was a fun event at Crissy Field where members helped facilitate event parking and finish line celebrations! After getting a little lost, we all met up bright and early in the morning and began ushering cars through the parking area. It was so fun to see runners all dressed up in their mermaid gear, and definitely reminded me of FRN. Afterwards, we handed out medals and gifts as runners crossed the finish line. It was great getting to know new members as we walked almost a mile in between sites.

ABIGAIL LEE Mermaid run was an event that was held at Crissy Field in San Francisco. It was a marathon to encourage girls to run and enjoy the moment of running. We facilitated where cars should park their cars and helped drivers get to their destination if they were lost. We handed out granola bars, water and other snacks. In the end, after a long tiring day, we all helped clean up after the event.

division 34 north … fundraiser! During the two weeks of the Boba Battles fundraising competition, I made efforts with friends to get boba at least twice. I wound up going with two friends to Urban Ritual after school one day which was really fun. My friend was very active in this fundraiser and went 7+ times, I believe! Our division team, the AB(oba)G’s, won the team fundraising competition and received the top prize of a certain amount of banana points. This fundraiser was a very creative and effective way to raise money for PTP. I thought it was very resourceful to have many different boba shops around the city participate with Key Club. I will gladly fundraise through purchasing boba drinks whenever the dlt decides to reuse this competition idea!

The November DCM was an exciting gathering! It was great to see everyone making cards and decorating bags together for the Thanksgiving food drive. We managed to collect dozens of donations, gathering bags filled with canned goods, desserts, and entree meals. We also heard from our LTG about how to register for division and district contests. Finally, we were able to fundraise for PTP by selling boba, Krispy Kreme Donuts, D34N Merch, and handmade necklaces.

MAYA KORNYEYEVA CARLMONT

I had a blast at the November DCM at Hillsdale High School! After the division updates and the dcm debrief, we headed to tables to create festive cards for Thanksgiving as a service project. The cards would accompany a decorated brown paper bag that would be going to Meals on Wheels donations. I got to meet many great people there that I normally do not socialize with, and even met someone who complimented my work on the division newsletter! To that person, thank you so much it means a lot to me :) I’m excited to attend the December DCM and more division events to come.

D C Meals on Wheels Donations M The November Division Council Meeting was a great event during which Key Clubs from our division were able to get together and give back to the community. Each club that attended talked about what they have been doing for the past month and what they plan on doing next month. Awards, such as club of the month and member of the month, were given out and people who came in late had to do 10 push ups. For the second part of the event, attendees were able to give back to the community by decorating Thanksgiving cards and paper bags for Meals on Wheels. During the DCM, members were also able to buy boba, donuts, D34N t-shirts, and necklaces to support PTP as well as donate canned food to Notre Dame Key Club’s food drive. Overall, the November DCM was a fun event. I really enjoyed hearing from all of the other Key Clubs as well as giving back to the community. The November DCM was definitely a fun one. For starters, our club had hosted a division-wide food drive where people brought their donations to the DCM. It was exciting to see all the bags of food brought and for our planning to pay off. There was also a lunch bag and card decorating portion which put my art skills to the test and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall, it was an enjoyable event and a great time to spend with friends.

14 . The world tree of hope volunteer event took place in Grace Cathedral where students from different schools worked together to decorate a large tree with origami cranes. We were stationed at different tables where parts of the tree attached with cranes were placed. We used straightening irons to flatten out the wrinkled cranes to make the tree presentable. Everyone worked together and helped one another to flatten the cranes. Once we were finished, we got a chance to tour the cathedral and look around. Overall, the volunteer event was good and it gave me a chance to see how volunteer events operate. It was nice seeing everyone work together.

DENA NGUYEN

World Tree of Hope was an event that happened at the Grace Cathedral. We had the opportunity to help assemble origami cranes on small trees that become into one large Christmas tree. We used flat irons to straighten out the cranes to make them look more presentable. Later in the event we got to go up to the actual cathedral and walk around. Overall I think that this was a very successful event and I had a lot of fun.

MATTHEW CHEN The World Tree of Hope event was an interclub between Galileo Key Club and Lowell Key Clubs. We got to flatten out origami cranes using hair straighteners that were on different trees that then made a bigger tree. There were different sessions that occurred between Saturday and Sunday November 6th and 7th. Later in the event we got to go up, and look and walk around the Cathedral. The Cathedral itself was really large and very beautiful. I had so much fun at this event and I got to meet so many new people. I really hope we get to go to more events like these.

The Night of Holiday Lights is when families and friends can go down to Laurel Street to enjoy live music, crafts, food, and much more. As a Key Club member, I volunteered at one of the craft booths to help kids make snowman ornaments. I really enjoyed seeing the kids having fun and being able to make something they can use for decoration. There were 2 sisters that had come to my booth and made my friend and I ornaments for our trees. It was really sweet and I hope I can do it again next year!

Greetings

Gifts and Greetings was an online event that occurred on November 13th, where division members gathered to do service through shoebox gift-making and/or virtual letter writing. The shoeboxes were for Operation Christmas Child by Samaritan’s Purse, who partners with local churches around the world to help children in need. The virtual letters were through Feeding America, where the letters would give families visiting food banks some happiness during the holidays. I chose to do the virtual letters, as I could not ship the box/pay the shipping fee. I wound up getting cut off in the Zoom meeting and could not get back in time by the end of the meeting, but I still completed about 5 letters on my own in the period the meeting was taking place. Overall, I think that the online event went smoothly. It brings back memories of online events from the past. I hope to do more online service,as it may be more accessible to those with busier schedules and transportation limits.

I'm a really slow scarf maker like I didn't even know how to crochet before this project. It was pretty easy though when I got a hang of it. I usually watched a movie while doing it since it could be repetitive and boring. It also literally took me 16 almost 17 hours to do this which is a really long time!!! In the end, I'm pretty proud with how my scarf turned out.

Landon’s project

At Landon’s Eagle Scout project, Key Clubbers, Eagle Scouts, and students volunteered their time to repaint Lowell’s courtyard. We started off by assembling the paint rollers and taping off the squares we would be painting. After prepping, we dipped our rollers in the tins of paint and began to paint. We did a few coats of paint and then had lunch together. This was a fun service event where we got to meet new people while beautifying the school. Last weekend Key Club helped with Landon’s Eagle Scout Project! In successfully repainting Lowell High School’s courtyard. Many volunteers from different Key Clubs and the Boy Scouts collaborated on this; they did an incredible job. We had our paint rollers and paint brushes ready! Bonding and helping each other out on painting the courtyard. It was amazing to see the transformation from before to after!

This officer has been putting 110% into their role. They've consistently promoted events to members and actively encouraged them to attend and provided materials at events for members who don't have them like at our park clean-up. Despite being part of a new club, they put in the effort to ask questions and fully understand the workings of the organization, something that many officers didn't try to do before. Since they have gone above and beyond in their officer position, they deserve officer of the month.

This month, Mr. Colglazier has been very supportive of Aragon Key Club by helping us plan our December DCM and by donating the money we raised for the Pediatric Trauma Program. We’re grateful for his patience when we had some issues with planning this event and even offered to supervise today during such a busy month for teachers and students alike. Aragon’s officer board and members would like to thank him for everything he’s done for us as our advisor and APUSH teacher.

Galileo was very active this past month. First of all, they have shown strong participation in many service events, both at the club and division level, as well as contributing to fundraisers such as Boba Battles. Additionally, they are always in touch with the division by participating in events, making on-time submissions, and asking questions when possible. They have been very consistent in staying involved which is why they deserve club of the month.

CARLMONT Over the past month of November, Carlmont held 6 different service events for our members. We had lots of events with the second harvest including the feed the need food drive where we handed out donation coupons to Safeway shoppers. We were even featured on NBC and Telemundo 48 (Spanish branch) with the food bank where our vice president, Amber Chia, and communications committee chair, Guillermo Mendoza, were interviewed! We also attended the November DCM and other division events. For the month of December, we will have 6 service events, including Night of Holiday lights where we had over 50 volunteers help at this annual event. We are also hosting more events at Carlmont after school and even during our club meetings! We plan to attend the Holiday-a-thon as well :)

HILLSDALE Over this past month, Hillsdale has accomplished many firsts. We hosted our first DCM this November where members could participate in decorating cards and paper bags to hand out over thanksgiving. We also held our first ever fundraiser, selling boba, Krispy Kreme, and necklaces raising over $200 for PTP. Members and officers have attended events such as CTC and the San Bruno park cleanup. We also just held our last meeting of the year and can’t wait to see everyone after the break!

NOTRE DAME This month, our club hasn't been extremely busy with events. We dedicated most of our time to our Thanksgiving food drive, and it was very successful. We were able to fill 50 bags full of sides and desserts and help families carry them to their cars in time for Thanksgiving. We are very grateful for everyone who contributed from the division! Besides this, we have been consistently attending division events like DCMs and the San Bruno Park Cleanup. We are about to host our final general meeting with a service project and will be recognizing people for their efforts for semester 1.

DNE CHALLENGE: What are you looking forward to this year? What are your dreams/goals for 2022?

LOWELL November was a busy month for Lowell Key Club as members attended club, interclub, and division events. Members repainted Lowell’s courtyard at Landon’s Eagle Scout Project. We had a day of service, social, and fundraising when members volunteered at a 5:30am marathon. We helped direct parking, kept runners on track, passed out medals, and coordinated the snack area. After volunteering, we had a club bonding by going out to lunch and the park, and ended the day by supporting our division’s boba fundraiser at Gong Cha. Members also attended division events like the Nov DCM and San Bruno Cleanup. We continue to have events and club bonding in December!

MILLS As students transfer from a month of very active participation (FRN) to a month that is mostly focused on school, finals, and the holidays (December), Mills Key Club has seen a decrease in event participation, but an odd increase in meeting attendance. In the past month, our members/officers have attended division events, such as: Gifts and Greetings, the Boba Battles fundraiser, and the November DCM. We are letting the members relax by not creating too many events this month, as they are already stressed about finals! We plan to get together more for socials, set up for a fundraiser, and participate in potential city clean-ups. As an option for those that are time-limited but want to do some small bits of service during these times, our club suggested creating online cards for kids at St. Judes during the holidays. Overall, this month has been quite smooth.

WESTMOOR For the past month, we have continued to have our weekly general meetings. We participated in volunteering for the Golden Gate Half Marathon & 5K. We have also started an internship program for members who want to understand the fundamentals of Key Club. Currently, we are planning a beach clean-up with two other clubs in our school, and we continue to plan a fundraiser to be held in January.
