Happy February Key-uties <3 ! I am soooo so proud of all of you guys for pushing through and completing a whole semester! I am proud of our new LTG, John, our current LTG, Courtney, and all of the people that ran have been working so hard to show their passion for Key Club. With that being said, this Key Club term will be ending really soon :( I love getting to share these newsletters each month!I know I will miss this community a lot when I leave for college, and I don’t know what I will do without ya’ll. So, let’s make the best of these last three months and really show people what Key Club represents! I really hope I get to connect with all of you guys on a deeper level at upcoming events! As for this issue of The Banana Chronicles, There are the usual articles and visuals, DLT messages, amazing apes, division goal updates, banana point updates, club summaries, birthdays, DNE/LTG Challenge participants, upcoming events, and more. I left the poem for Advisor George in this issue from January’s publication, just in case some might have missed it. Lastly, I hope you enjoy my little drawings and graphics <3 I always spend quite a bit of time creating them, but they bring so much to these newsletters and I can’t think of having a publication without them. Thanks for continuing to support the D34N newsletter. See you soon!

Cheers,

A Message From Your

Aloha, Aqua Apes! While our next Lt. Governor has been elected, you guys are still stuck with me for three more months ;) But that also means the countdown for District Convention and the start of a new term has begun! I'm super excited for this event, and I can't wait to see you all there. Remember to start preparing for registration and submitting ASAP. This is an amazing opportunity most people don't get, and I promise it will be an unforgettable experience! We also have plenty of division events coming soon, both service and social, including our year-end banquet and Mr. Key Club! You don't want to miss the chance to bond with your division and others beyond. Also, with most club elections also approaching soon, I wish those running the best of luck. And remember, your position does not define you - it's the work you do. It's cheesy but it's true :) I'm so proud of all that we've done this term, and there's still time to do more!! Happy Valentine's Day to you all too! L-O-V-E I love my D-I-V <3

Thanks,

Courtney Tai

5. Happy New Year’s, Aqua Apes! Wow! I can't believe the first month of the year is already over! I hope that you guys were able to enjoy some of the service and fundraising opportunities this past month. Of course, we had a conclave so hopefully, you guys had a great time witnessing the next LTG. At this point, many of you guys are preparing for your home club elections, and I wish you the best of luck in that. It may sound nerve-racking at first, but I promise you that everything will be fine in the end. Also, due dates for the district contests are coming up really fast, and I recommend you guys look into it because you guys deserve to be recognized for all your hard work this term. If you need help with e-portfolios, I am always here to answer any questions you have about them. As we approach near the end of the term, let's continue to serve our community, contribute to any fundraisers when possible, and promote dues to help reach our goals. As always, you guys have been super awesome in getting our goals up and I am proud of all the things you guys have done in this past term. If you have any questions or just want to talk, I am always here.

Thanks! Sean Sygaco Executive Assistant 122017ss@gmail.com

Hello! I hope you all have had a good transition back into school from winter break! Personally, winter break was a much-needed break for me and I was able to relax, stress-free away from home. I know that not everyone traveled for break but I hope you were able to take some time away from your computer/school work. As the term gets closer to the end, all that this means is that we should work even harder to surpass all of the goals that we have set for the year. On both a club and division level, it is important to participate and continue attending events! The end of the term coming also means elections are coming up! For those of you underclassmen interested in leadership positions, it might be time to start thinking about what role you want to take on next year. I hope you all have great elections and a great second semester!

Thanks! Kristi Xia Executive Assistant kxia23@ndhsb.org

6. Hey, Aqua Apes! I can't believe January has already passed by so quickly with conclave. Since Omicron is spreading, we'll be having a mix of in-person and online events so be sure to be on the lookout for safer alternatives to meeting in-person. DCON is also approaching which I know everyone is excited for, please remember to register early in order to save some money :) I highly encourage you guys to go since I definitely remember it being one of the greatest learning opportunities I've had while in Key Club. I hope to see you all at the next DCM hosted by Notre Dame!

Thank You! Jasmine Bao Division Secretary jasbao777@gmail.com

Hey, Aqua Apes! Hope everyone had a comfortable start to the new year! Hopefully, you all have reflected and chosen some new year's resolutions to bring into 2022. Mine is to try to not fall behind in school work which I may or may not have been successful in doing already... I'm sure conclave was super exciting and whoever is the next LTG, good luck, and let's all wish them the best for next term! As the term comes closer and closer to an end, we should all check in with our secretaries and see how close we are to coming to certain achievements like bronze silver, and gold membership! With Mr. Key Club approaching, all the men out there need to look at themselves and realize their beauty, talent, and passion as we are all Mr. Key Club in our hearts. Hope to see you all at the next event! Love John <33.

Good Luck <3 John Hillyard Executive Assistant jshihillyard@gmail.com

holiday care goodies The event that I attended was the Holiday Care Goodies for LifeMoves where we packaged goodies for the homeless. At the event, we took paper lunch bags and a variety of candy, placing a few in each bag. In addition, we also put one packet of instant hot chocolate into each goodie bag. After we used up all of the candy, we went outside to write a few cards to put into the bags. These note cards were small, but had a large impact, wishing happy holidays. I personally really liked this event despite it being cold outside, but I liked the simplicity of placing candy and other goodies into bags to donate. I liked that I could use my own creativity to make notes, and I also liked that it went to the homeless and it makes me feel good that I am bringing some type of joy to people during the holiday season.

ALLISON HOANG The Holiday Care Goodies for LifeMoves event was a small, simple after school event where we assembled gift bags. We divided candy into bags and then made handwritten little notes with phrases such as “Happy Holidays” and “Merry Christmas” to put into each gift bag along with the candy. It was a small group of people and we just sat at tables and talked while we worked. It was a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. I’m very glad that I attended.

At the December dcm, our division gathered to make origami boxes to represent the lives lost to gun violence. We also had a very fun white elephant game, where many brought gifts and got to choose from them in ascending order of numbers people drew from a hat. I got to bond with a lot of new people over the gift exchange and through fun games of volleyball, while also getting to rekindle already existing relationships I’d formed through Key Club. Altogether, the event was well-coordinated and exciting, and I hope to attend more dcm’s of this nature in the future.

KAELYN FUNG MILLS The December DCM was hosted by Aragon. It was pretty mellow, and not as many people went. We had a white elephant, where around 15 people participated. It was pretty fun, even though not as many people stole gifts. The service portion was us making Soul Boxes. These boxes were meant to commemorate the lives lost to gun violence.

The December DCM was a festive event at Aragon High School that I am so happy I got to be a part of! It was great getting to know everyone through the White Elephant and the hilarious dares like Bop-it or a crab walk race in order to steal gifts. I had to protect the cup I unwrapped by defeating other members at holiday song trivia! At the end of the event, we all folded origami soul boxes to raise awareness for victims of gun violence. Volunteers worked together to create the boxes by folding one-half of the box. each and decorating it together! I had so much fun and I am looking forward to next month's DCM

10 . Holiday-A-Thon was a fun event where there were different fun activities such as gift giving, service events and more. Holiday-A-Thon was hosted by the Executive Assistants of D34N and D34S. The Executive Assistants led many different presentations on time management and giving advice to freshmen all the way to seniors. Different Key Clubs were also selling different types of merch and food. Overall, this was a very fun event and I hope that we get to do other events similar to this one.

JASMINE BAO LOWELL

d34n The Holiday-a-Thon was a social and service event that included members from D34N and D34S. At the event, we listened to informational presentations about gift-giving, time and stress management, and keeping new year's resolutions. Following the presentations, we had the choice of participating in multiple activities including ornament making, karaoke, and playing games. I really enjoyed making my own ornament and meeting Key Clubbers from other schools. Another segment of the event was community service where I decorated postal boxes to send to military members. Overall, this event was filled with lots of diverse and fun activities that kept me engaged.

KAITLYN KWAN CARLMONT

11 . Holiday-a-thon, held on December 28 was a very fun way to celebrate the holiday season and end the year! There were a lot of great bonding activities such as Karaoke or decorating ornaments. I loved being able to paint Christmas ornaments during the event while listening to people put their own twists on songs such as Adele’s Hello or Taylor Swift songs. Overall, Holiday-a-thon was a nice way to celebrate key club through various service activities and fun games!

ARIEL LUCAS NOTRE DAME

d34s The D34 Holiday-a-Thon was a super exciting and enjoyable experience. It was nice meeting new people from other divisions and we all had fun together decorating ornaments and playing games. There was also a karaoke machine and those who sang set a joyful mood for everyone else. Personally, my favorite part of the event was the service portion where we made cape decorating kits for children. I look forward to participating in this event again next year :D

COLIN ZHANG CARLMONT Holiday-A-Thon was an event planned by the Executive Assistants of D34N and D34S. It was a mix of presentations, fun activities, service events and more. ALEKZ ALBERTO Many cubs also started selling food and LOWELL merch, which was also pretty good.

12 . Earlier this month, I drove to San Francisco before dawn to serve as a start line volunteer at the annual San Francisco Hot Chocolate 5k/15k Run. While I wasn’t necessarily ecstatic to be outside and awake before 6’oclock in the morning, it was nice to be able to look up and see the stars (which were probably all airplanes, given that we weren’t in a rural area) as we organized ourselves into corrals in preparation for the race. As the runners (and walkers) filed in, it was cool to see the sheer variety–and quantity–of participants. From wheelchair users to dog walkers, large friend groups clad in festive attire to parents with infants strapped to their chests, people from many different walks of life had all decided to come out and support St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital together. After we dropped the final rope and the last group of 15k runners embarked on their race, we walked over to the finish line area to return our safety vests and pick up some sweet treats and hot chocolate to ward off the cold (yum!!).

SHEA STUBBLEFIELD MILLS

This was my second and last time attending the Hot Chocolate Run and I cannot express how grateful I am that I went. This time around, a lot more of my friends went, which only made the experience even more joyous. It felt great to be around the runners who were in such a good mood so early in the morning; they were extremely excited to get started with the race. Our group was stationed at the starting line so we didn't stay until the event was over. After we were done with our shift, we were told we could get food. When I got my food, I could see how hard the volunteers were working there so a HUGE thanks to them :)

13 . The volunteer check in was really early at like 5 a.m. I arrived at about 5:45 am and I checked in and met up with Lauren. During the event, we helped separate the corrals using rope and a sign indicating each corral. It was super cold and my fingers went numb while holding the rope. For the 5k, I was in corral A, which was at the starting line and it was cool to see all of the runners start off. After sending the runners off, we got hot chocolate and chocolate fondue which was really good for the cold.

SOPHIA BUBAN SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO

On January 9th, a couple Mills key clubbers and I joined the rest of d34n in assisting at the San Francisco Hot Chocolate 5k/15k Run supporting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. At the crack of dawn, we all gathered by the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park and were sectioned off to different tasks. As part of the start line volunteers, I helped lead runners towards the race start line, separating runners into different waves. I was so surprised to see thousands of people coming out to run and support. It looked like the crowd of people never ended. As we finished our shift, we were privileged to receive snacks, like hot chocolate, chocolate fondue, pretzels, a banana, etc. It was a great experience, and I hope to help out at more marathons later this year (but hopefully not at 5 in the morning haha). Key Club went to SF at golden gate park early in the morning to help guide runners in the Hot Chocolate Run. We spent 2 to 3

hours standing outside and leading runners to the start line. We got to meet with other Key Clubbers and volunteer in the cold together. Once we finished we received hot chocolate and snacks for our hard work:)

LAUREN TA SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO Volunteers for the Hot Chocolate run help get everything situated with the runners so everyone doesn’t get confused on where they go, and at the end the runners and volunteers get hot chocolate as well as some other snacks! Including a banana, rice krispy, pretzels, a marshmallow, oreos, and fudge to drip all the treats in! Volunteers also get a free jacket and a plastic drawstring bag to hold it in! The morning was cold and it was dark so they gave us bright orange vests to wear so runners and people could spot us. KYLIE SITU We held rope and held up signs with a specific alphabet to help runners indicate where SOUTH SAN they would be in the starting line. We slowly moved up as each letter of the alphabet was called to start the run. Overall it was a smooth process! FRANCISCO

Thank You Letters At the Writing Thank You Letters to Teachers event, Key Clubbers were able to express their appreciation for all the hard work their teachers have done this semester. We made cards with paper, markers, and embellishments to share a little holiday spirit with our teachers and to say thank you for all that they’ve done. Transitioning back to in-person learning was a journey, but teachers put in a lot of effort to make it as smooth as possible, which was greatly appreciated. This event was a really fun way for us to say thank you and a nice break from studying for finals! I really enjoyed being able to spend time being creative while also giving back to teachers who have done so much for us this year. All of my teachers seemed really happy when I gave them their cards, which made me happy as well! I really appreciate all that the teachers do for us at school, and this event was a great way to give back to them!

GRACE KIMBERG

The Carlmont Campus Cleanup event was in-person and gave me a chance to make a difference at my school! We went around campus for an hour and a half picking up trash we saw littered on the ground. We were given trash bags and gloves to roam around with and ended with multiple filled bags. I liked this event because it let me have a specific time to pick up trash instead of just picking a piece or two of trash whenever I see it on the ground. I picked up trash from places where people would never see them and found pieces I had never noticed before. Generally speaking, I enjoyed picking up trash with my friends and I hope we can do it again with bigger attendance.

Krampus Cross Country was a run. Which was an event hosted by Lowell. It was pretty cold and wet, and the event started really early. CARLMONT Over the past month of December, Carlmont held 6 different service events, which included the Night of Holiday Lights. At this event we had over 60 Key Clubbers participate and helped monitor bouncy houses, craft booths, and more! It was a super fun event and other volunteers were thoroughly impressed by our hard work and dedication. We also attended many division events like the December DCM where our members participated in the white elephant and made soul boxes. At the Holiday-A-Thon we gave hot chocolate in exchange for a donation which was successful and our members had a lot of fun! For the month of January, our main goal is to help our members reach their MRP goals. We have over 6 service projects and many ongoing events to allow our members to do service on their own time. We also started an internship program where underclassmen get to shadow officers for two weeks to get a taste of what being an officer is like. We just started to plan elections and starting the new year of strong!

HILLSDALE This month, after surpassing both our fundraising and dues paid member goal, Hillsdale reassessed what we’d like to accomplish as a club going forward. In the upcoming year, we plan to more heavily focus on service, while also continuing to recruit more members and keep up our fundraising. We had members and officers attend the holiday-a-thon event, where we hosted a booth, exchanging necklaces for PTP donations. Currently we are planning upcoming meetings and events as we head back into the new year.

LOWELL During the month of December, Lowell Key Club members attended division and club level events, went to a training conference, and participated in our club bonding. Members and officers went to our annual Holiday-a-Thon, where we met members from D34S, learned from workshops, and had fun playing games. We also hosted a club level event, Campus Cross Country, where we helped set up and distribute goodie bags for runners. To get into the Christmas spirit, our club hosted a Secret Santa for our members. We drew names, made wishlists, and had a fun time opening our exchanged presents! Our officer Alekz attended the Candidate Training Conference. In the next month, we plan on attending our division Hot Coco Run and Conclave!

25 .

MILLS Mills Key Club has been transitioning back into service after winter break pretty well. Before the break, some of our members attended the December DCM at Aragon High School and had a lot of fun. After students returned to school, many of our club members volunteered for the Hot Chocolate Run at Golden Gate Park. Though it was very early, it was very enjoyable and moving to see so many people come out to support St. Judes Children's Research Hospital. We have begun starting up club meetings again as a weekly thing. As the end of this term nears, we will be trying to pump out more club events and preparing our members for elections.

NOTRE DAME This month has been pretty uneventful for Notre Dame. We attended division events like the December DCM and Holiday-A-Thon and had lots of fun with the holiday-themed events. We have been preparing for our return back to school and have a couple fun events planned for our members. We hope to continue to attend more division-level service events to help us reach our service goals!

WESTMOOR For the past month, we have had one general meeting, as members were focusing on their final exams for the semester. We have also finished up internship applications for our club. Currently, we have a school clean-up planned this month with two other clubs in our school. We are also training our interns to give them insight on the tasks of being an officer.
