Welcome Back, Aqua Apes! School is starting up again! I am so excited to get back to school, yet I’m also very nervous because this is my senior year and I have to finish college application stuff! I hope you all got some good rest this summer. We got this! Make sure to attend the upcoming August events for key club! Keep the Key Cup in mind! The annual Regional Training Conference (RTC) is coming up, as well. It will be in-person! YAY! Also, if you’re into graphic design, I highly encourage you to submit an entry for the DCON design contest this year. More information for guidelines can be found on Instagram at @cnh_keyclub. I suggest clubs to focus on recruitment and socials for incoming new key-clubbers this month. Let’s expand the D34N community even more! I hope you guys like this issue of The Banana Chronicles. I worked on this while on vacation and during college tour trips, so it may not be as detailed as previous ones. I apologize! Anyways, have a happy August <3 Please reach out to me if you have any questions. Toodles~
Love,

Hey Key-uties! I hope you've all had a great summer so far! It's crazy to think that school's starting soon. At least the silver lining is that we will be able to start having in-person events soon. Until then, we have some fun online events coming up, including our ongoing Key Cup! Make sure to be involved in and get to know your house! Also, it's time to start getting hype for Region Training Conference (RTC)! Region 9 and 17 have been hard at work planning the best in-person RTC we can and we're so excited to announce more details soon! It will be an unforgettable event that I encourage EVERY Key Clubber to come to. With that, good luck to everyone starting school! I'm always here if you need anything!
Thanks,
Courtney Tai

Hey Guys! Although I hate to say this, school is just around the corner! Hopefully we can all go back in-person, or are at least facing some sort of hybrid schedule. On the bright side, I hope that prep for club fairs are in motion and that you're all helping your clubs recruit new members for the school year. I can guarantee that it'll be super fun to ease back into in-person events. Lastly, good luck in participating!
in The Key Cup and let's get those banana points!!!
Thank You! Jasmine Bao Division Secretary jasbao777@gmail.com
Helloooo Aqua Apes! I hope your summer has been going as well as mine! This past month has been exciting, with lots of service and fundraising events being held. I had a great time participating in the River Rose service event because I was able to make something pretty with my limited art skills, and I hope you all had fun too. As the halfway point of summer passes by, I hope everyone is able to do something they enjoy before the summer ends. Personally, I want to (safely) go on a vacation for a few days just to unwind. Don't fret over the fact that summer is halfway over though! Look forward to in-person key club events and the opportunity to recruit new
members when the school year starts. As usual, we have lots of stuff planned for you guys as we start transitioning to in-person (including our August DCM, hopefully). Keep attending service events and participating in fundraisers to help our division reach our goals! Lots of love for you all :)
Thanks! Kristi Xia Executive Assistant kxia23@ndhsb.org

Hey Aqua Apes! Hope you guys have been using this summer to relax and spend some time with loved ones <3. I personally had a lot of fun making roses for the River Rose Memorial and I might have burned myself a couple times with my hot glue gun... I'm also excited to receive my bracelet from Notre Dame. Praying for all of you that are waiting for your AP test scores! Hope you guys all get 5s. As the summer comes closer and closer to ending, some of you might be sad that school is coming back slowly, but we should all be excited for
next year and all the new members that will join our clubs. Hope to see you guys at some of our upcoming events this August. Love you guys! <3
Thanks! John Hillyard Executive Assistant jshihillyard@gmail.com
Hi Aqua Apes! I hope that your summer is going well and had the time to relax. First of all, thank you for all the hard work you guys have done even during your summer break. In this past month, I’ve see you guys participate in many events like the In-person workshop and service opportunities from the division, so keep up the great work! Of course, keep on a look out for future service events from the division as well as fundraiser opportunities which will be super fun. Summer may be coming to a close, but it really gets better from here. Very soon we will be fully transitioning away from Zoom, so stay on a look out for many events in person! It has been a
while, but I can’t wait for us to get together again and perform our key club cheers because these are experiences that you will never forget. As always, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or just want to talk. Stay safe everyone!
Thanks! Sean Sygaco Executive Assistant 122017ss@gmail.com

Carlmont Letters to Orphans was a virtual service event, where Key Clubbers from Carlmont, San Mateo and Westmoor created notes of inspiration for orphanages. We were given the option to either write a digital note through Paper Bridges’ website or create and mail our own cards. I decided to go for a mixture of the two as I wanted to express some of my creativity in order to design a card that was both unique and joyful for the orphans. I went with a sunny scenery with flowers and grassy hills. I was very happy to be a part of the event as it feels amazing to have the opportunity to put a smile on the face of any orphan. The hosts of the event were also friendly and provided a peaceful environment to work in.
GUILLERMO MENDOZA CARLMONT
At our June Interclub with San Mateo and Westmoor, attendees wrote letters and made cards for orphans through the Paper Bridges Organization. Since we had the option of either writing online letters or making physical cards, I decided to take a break from cardmaking and instead type out thoughtful notes to send directly to the orphanages. It was a very calm event that allowed me to relax after a day of finals and make someone's day a little brighter, which always brings me joy! It was nice to work with others in breakout rooms as well and have the chance to share what we were writing in our letters or what kinds of cards we were coming up with. Overall, this interclub was a great way to earn service even during finals week, and I would definitely recommend this event to others that want to make a difference in the community.

These cards for the "Gotta Have a Sole" event are given along with a new pair of shoes for the youth in need. I had a lot of fun decorating and coloring in the shoes for each card. Since each shoe comes with a personalized card, these will hopefully bring a smile to the children receiving them.
A very well put together slideshow with cute visuals did a great job explaining the event. I had a great time personalizing my card for these children and I hope they enjoy their new sneakers!

Gotta Have Sole was a fun service opportunity where we got to decorate cards for homeless kids who would be receiving brand new shoes. It was great to be able to decorate cards and notes that will hopefully brighten up a kids day. I hope that there will be more opportunities to do it again soon.
HAYLEY WONG MILLS
The Gotta Have Sole event was an interesting event. Since we wrote personalized cards to homeless children receiving shoes. I think that writing a card to someone that might just make their day is a really heartwarming feeling. This service event was really fun!
SERINA CHIN MILLS Our club held a Gotta Have Sole event and it was so much fun. We haven’t held an event just for our club in a while and so it was fun to hold an event just for ourselves. Coloring the shoes was very calming and a nice time to get away from the electronics. Overall, the event was successful and it was nice to see everyone.
CHLOE GAO MILLS
Today we personalized a shoe card for Gotta Have Sole, which provides a free pair of shoes for unhoused kids. Each pair of shoes comes with a card that you can personalize and write notes. We listened to music as a group while decorating.

9. At the Color Give Smile event, we created art for senior citizens in order to bring smiles to their faces! I loved this event because it gave me the creative freedom to draw whatever I want, but the site also included useful examples whenever I ran out of ideas. It felt great knowing that my art was going towards a cause that would make people happy. It was fun to see what my friends drew for their work, and I personally drew a set of colorful flowers. I hope we have an event similar to this in the future!
JASMINE BAO LOWELL
Color Give Smile was an event hosted by Lowell Key Club. We made cards and art for seniors. We got to draw whatever we wanted or we had the opportunity to print out a drawing and color it in. I drew some flowers, a sun, a sky, and a couple clouds. I really liked this event because we got to bond and it was a great opportunity to make someone happy.

The park cleanup was not only a fun way to take care of the community, but also an opportunity to protect the animals of the area. During the cleanup, we passed through the back of the trail leading from Mariners park. We spotted numerous animals such as geese and squirrels, alongside a great deal of trash littered around the fencing separating the wildlife from the marketplace. The litter ranged from receipts and wrappings to tennis balls and cardboard boxes, all of which could potentially be injurious to the surrounding animals. Fortunately, we were able to clear most of the garbage on the wildlife side of the fence, filling two large trash bags as a result! On Saturday, June 26th, 2021, we walked around Mariner Park in Redwood Shores for a park clean up! With our gloves on and trash bags in hand, we picked up as much garbage and clutter as we could. Even though we were only there for 1.5 hours, we were able to walk around a lot and clean up tons of trash! I’d like to think of it as a win for both us and the environment. Now the plants and wildlife can flourish even more than they did before!

On June 30, I attended the division wide service event, pet-a-palooza. During this, I cut up and decorated an old box which would be used as a snuggle box for pets. I thought this event was fun since I was able to decorate the box any way I wanted and my box was super big, so I had a lot to work with. Overall, I had a good time at this event and I definitely would love to see more of these handcrafted events like this in the future.
Before Pet-a-Palooza, I was struggling to find a box I could use; one that would be comfortable enough for a little pet to fit inside. I ended up using a box from a paper shredder that was just the perfect size for what I needed :) At the beginning of the event, I wasn't quite sure what to do with the box so I ended up going with the flow and painting the box completely black. I couldn't finish it before the event finished so I continued to work on it and decided to paint a natural scenery on the box. I had honestly forgotten how to paint clouds so it was quite the re-learning experience. Overall, I'm quite happy with how the box turned out and I hope it serves a little critter well!!
MELISSA HERNANDEZ SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Pet-A-Palooza, hosted by Hillsdale High School, was an event where Key Clubbers SEAN SYGACO made snuggle boxes to be EL CAMINO donated to the animal rescue organization Pets In Need. Those who participated in the event used cardboard boxes and materials such as paint and markers to create cozy homes for animals helped by the organization. I needed to use time outside of the event so that I could decorate my box and make it look the best it can be. The box was fun to paint, and as someone who deals with anxiety, the process put my mind in a more positive place than it could have been in. I am excited for my box to be donated to an animal in need!

The River Rose Memorial event, hosted by Carlmont High School, was Division 34 North's contribution to an effort to create a memorial in the nation's capital for COVID-19 victims. Thousands of roses are going to be displayed in Washington, D.C. as a way to mourn the loss of countless Americans during the pandemic. And a great portion of those roses are coming from our division alone. Before the event, participants received at least one kit of red felt from their club presidents and prepared hot glue to use. And during the event, they learned the simple way to cut and form their felt into roses. The crafting involved in this event was a fun way for me to spend my time, and it is comforting to know that my roses will go towards a good cause.
DYLAN JOEL DJINGUEUZIAN ARAGON
During the river rose service event, I and some other key clubbers from across the division crafted felt roses for a memorial that will be exhibited in Washington DC. I used a small plate as a template for cutting a circle out of the felt, and then I cut a spiral into that circle. I then glued along the edge of the fabric in small sections, rolling it up into a rose along the way. The act of cutting and gluing the roses served as a tactile reminder of all the lives lost to COVID-19. The event thus prompted gratitude, reflection and remorse; while I'm glad that my close family and friends survived the pandemic, this was a painful reminder that not everyone else was as fortunate, and that many people are left grieving over their loved ones while the rest of the world is getting "back to normal." I hope that the roses I made may serve as a reminder to those families and friends that their pain matters, and that they are not alone.
SHEA STUBBLEFIELD MILLS
13 . The River Rose Memorial event was a very fun event. We made roses to honor the lives lost to COVID-19. It was very different from any other service events we had over the pandemic, since most of the service events that we’ve done lately were writing cards (or something similar) and mailing them. This event involved using more crafting supplies than usual, which made it enjoyable. It was somewhat difficult to try to glue the roses correctly, but they ended up looking amazing. Overall, this event felt new and I look forward to going to more events like this.
DARREN CHEN WESTMOOR The River Rose Memorial was extremely fun for me because I got to do something hands-on. I'm normally not great at art but the roses were so simple to make and looked like something that took ten times the effort that it actually did. I became so immersed in making When I attended the rose river them that the two memorial you can say that it left hours flew by, and I a good memory. While folding hope there are more the roses I felt a feeling that hands-on or made me realize how much of in-person service an impact keyclub sets in events in the future. society and that I wanted to be more to help them.
KRISTI XIA NOTRE DAME
TIMOTHY LEE WESTMOOR
I really enjoyed the River Rose Memorial service event because of how interactive it was, and because it was a welcome change from the previous online service events, which consisted mostly of letter writing and card making. In addition, I think the idea behind the service event - to create felt flowers to honor the lives lost to COVID-19- is something that is very impactful in our current situation with the pandemic. It felt incredibly good to know that the roses I made would contribute to something larger than myself: a monument in Washington D.C. that can be visited by thousands of people. The drop off and pick up process for the Kiwanis sponsored materials was also very well coordinated, and the zoom event itself went very smoothly. Overall, it was a simple and fun hands-on service event!

14 . I attended KCTC which was on 6/19. I enjoyed the officer workshop because it was nice to get new tips on how to do my best in my position, and I always enjoy seeing other people who have the same job as me. I also liked the "guess the song" game. It was a fun activity and a nice little break in between the events. Another thing I enjoyed was the other workshops that you go to choose. I attended the how to level up your club one and the how to get more money/donations for your club.
BROOKE ANDERSON NOTRE DAME This year’s KCTC was filled with fun and exciting adventures. Region 17’s lieutenant governors took us through the world of Studio Ghibli. We were able to attend different workshops to further our knowledge in leadership positions in Key Club and advice to help our clubs progress. We also had the treat of hearing a presentation from Evan Low, a former Key Club member and Assemblymember in the California State Assembly. The lieutenant governors created an amazing and engaging experience. After KCTC, our division reconvened for our DCM, where Courtney updated us on upcoming events and more. This day was filled with excitement, laughs, and great memories.

I had a fun and meaningful time at Key Club Training Conference 2021! At this Studio Ghibli themed training conference, I was able to learn a lot at the workshops, see lots of new faces, and laugh with the other Key Clubbers. We started off the day with officer workshops, followed by a general session and round robins. I loved that some IP LTGs were invited to present, it was awesome to see them! The cook off between LTGs during lunchtime was a new and very fun event and getting to hear from guest speaker Evan Low was definitely exciting. I’m so glad my last KCTC was super cute and fun!

15 . KCTC is an annual training conference in which all the members of Region 17 meet. During this four hour event, we have presentations, workshops, guest speakers, and more. I attended the workshop for treasurers, and was able to learn a lot about how I can serve as a great treasurer for my home club. I also saw a presentation on how I can utilize all the great scholarship opportunities provided by Kiwanis/Key Club. The entire day was so informative and fun and I can’t wait to attend again next year.
GRACE PARK LOWELL On Saturday, June 19, key clubbers across Region 17 attended the Key Club Training Conference. The theme of KCTC this year was Studio GhiBEE with the event revolving around the Studio Ghibli films. There was a schedule of activities planned including officer workshops, round robin workshops, and a guest speaker. The Studio Ghibli theme was incorporated in every aspect of the conference with the characters, music, and stories which was really creative and made it a great experience. The workshops were very informative and the ltgs did a great job of running the event and building up excitement. The June DCM also took place during KCTC and included updates on the clubs and division, recognition, past and upcoming events, as well as the raffle drawing for the Eliminate fundraiser. Overall, I felt that I got a lot out of KCTC and it was an amazing experience!
+ June D.C.M.
JOCEYLN OWEN CARLMONT
In the month of June, I found KCTC really fun as an event. I learned a lot of things such as the college process and how to win scholarships from Key Club. Overall, KCTC had a lot of Key Club related topics I didn’t know of and I’m glad I went.

South San Francisco has been super involved this past month. They’ve hosted a division wide service project and are involved in planning the garage sale with our Kiwanians. Their officers are also really dedicated. They show up at Kiwanis DCMs, and are at every event we’ve hosted this month. Their initiative with multiple branches of Key Club shows why they deserve club of the month.

ARAGON For the month of June Aragon Key Club has focused on our bi-weekly general meetings for the summer. We have also started a basic layout for our club rush during the new school year. We have also been gathering items for goodie bags for our members that will be given out shortly. Our officers and members attended Banquet and KCTC. Both events were so much fun and we were so happy to see everyone in-person for Banquet. Our members also participated in the Pet-A-Palooza and Sparks Flashcard service event.
CARLMONT Last month Carlmont Key Club hosted a total of 9 service events, a fundraiser, and a social event. Many of our members also attended KCTC where we participated in fun activities, listened to guest speakers, and attended workshops. We were also able to wrap up our Eliminate Raffle Fundraiser at the June DCM where we raised a total of $195 for Eliminate. In terms of service events, we included a mix of in-person events and virtual ones for our members and were able to host a park clean up as well as the division wide service event, river rose! In terms of July, we plan to continue attending division events and the summer leadership conference. Haley Sorenson, a Carlmont Key Club alumni, will be our guest speaker for this month and share how Key Club has benefitted her in college and beyond. Additionally, Carlmont is working on the freshman orientation fair where we will prepare to recruit more members :)
EL CAMINO We did it! We made it to summer, and during the summer months, El Camino is going to still be offering various service opportunities to members who want to participate during the summer. During June, there were in-person volunteer opportunities, such as the monthly park cleanup and weekly food distribution. For those who can’t go to in-person events, due to being unvaccinated or no transportation, the division is still having some division-wide service projects over Zoom, such as the Pet-a-Palooza DWSP. Going forward, both the division and the club will transition strictly to in-person activities.
HILLSDALE In the month of June, Hillsdale Key Club held our division-wide service event, Pet-A-Palooza, where we made Snuggle Boxes for the organization, “Pets in Need”. We also had members attend events such as the 2021 Final Sunset Banquet, KCTC, and the River Rose Memorial event. Currently, we are planning summer club meetings, as well as how we want to recruit new members for the upcoming school year.
23 .
LOWELL Lowell Key Club continued to hold meetings over the summer. In the month of June, we held an event called Color Give Smile and created artwork for elders and children. We also had a month-long event for Charity Miles, where members walked for donations to charity. Our Studio Ghibli themed KCTC also took place in June, and members and officers learned a lot through the workshops and had fun watching the cooking contest! A big division service event that our club participated in was the River Rose Memorial, where we cut and glued together roses. We plan on attending the July DCM and hosting an in person event soon!
MILLS For the month of July, Mills Key Club has been working to keep the club moving forward with activities and new service opportunities. We have hosted Gotta Have Sole for our members, attended the River Rose Memorial Event, gone to Pet-a-Palooza, and have attended the June DCM/KCTC. Because the school year is starting in about a month, we have been preparing for fundraisers, club rush, and freshman orientation. Many members are out traveling or are not that active due to summer plans, but we hope to get them more engaged as the school year comes to a start!
NOTRE DAME Notre Dame Key Club has been extremely busy this month. Not only have we hosted a division fundraiser, but we are also hosting an upcoming division-wide service project. Our club has been busy getting club fair resources together. We recognize how important it is to increase membership this year, which is why we are starting so early to plan for recruitment. 2/3 of our committees have been filled and we are looking forward to filling the third when school starts. We've had members participate in KCTC, River Rose Memorial, and the Summer Leadership Conference. Finally, we are also planning for a summer social with nearby clubs and are looking forward to seeing them in person!
DNE CHALLENGE: What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve experienced or have done?
24 .
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO For the month of June, South San Francisco has been regularly meeting on a bi-weekly basis to check in with our members and give updates about events and the division. We're continuing our monthly Westborough Park clean up with El Camino and plan to do more fun socials alongside them in the future! And with socials in mind, we've hosted a club movie night, which anyone was welcome to join, where we watched the new Disney movie, Cruella. It was a really enjoyable night and such a great movie, we highly recommend it to anyone.
SEQUOIA For the month of June, Sequoia's Key Club helped the Second Harvest at a food distribution to families by putting boxes of food into their cars and writing down their information. Sequoia's Key Club did a cleanup at Red Morton Park by digging up unwanted weeds near the Magical Bridge Playground. Sequoia's Key Club members attended an event called North Fair Oaks and Redwood City Health Fair along with the Woodside Terrace Kiwanis. Key Clubbers were painting helmets for children. The Woodside Terrace Kiwanis were handing out materials to children that walked by.
WESTMOOR For the past month, we have had two general meetings. One meeting contained a service activity where we wrote cards for hospitalized children, while the other meeting contained a fun social activity. A few more members have been coming to our meetings, but we hope to continue increasing that number. We have also had an interclub with Carlmont and San Mateo, where we wrote notes to orphans. From June 14 to June 18, we created a service week that members participated in. Our officers have continued to attend division events, such as KCTC and the River Rose Memorial service event. We are now planning to participate in the garage sale held by the Kiwanis Club of South San Francisco. We also plan to create some social events to bond with our members.
