Happy February! How are you all?? Hopefully your first month in 2021 was a good one, and that your 2021 started off on the right foot. Remember, it is okay if you have felt unmotivated this month. You still have a whole 11 months to accomplish your goals. Remember to take care of yourselves and to take the time for self-care. I know personally that January is always the hardest month, but I promise February will be better <3 With February also comes the month where District contests are due! District contests are due in 16 days, so I would highly recommend you get started on those applications as soon as possible. This would be a great way to receive the recognition that you all deserve, as I know you all have worked extremely hard this term. Keep up the hard work and dedication as it doesn’t go unnoticed. We all appreciate every single one of you for your participation in fundraisers and events. This month, we have many events lined up so stay tuned and follow us on Instagram to keep up with all the updates! As usual, don’t forget to turn in your challenges on time as the term is about to end. Participating in the newsletter challenges can really benefit your club, as many of the clubs are very close in numbers. Please let me know if you have any questions, suggestions, or just need someone to talk to :)) Okay, peace out for now and enjoy this month’s newsletter!

Thanks,

Amber Chia

DNE Challenge: What did you eat for Breakfast, lunch, and dinner yesterday?

Aloha, Aqua Apes! As we slowly start to reach the end of the 2021-2022 term, I have two quick tips to share to make sure we end the term off strong. First is to make sure you and as many of your friends as possible are DUES PAID! There are so many benefits to being dues paid, such as voting in your club elections, scholarships for Seniors, applying for contests, and more! Speaking of contests, there are so many that Key Clubbers of all experience levels can apply for. There are contests for members, officers, clubs, and even advisors! By applying for these contests, you can receive recognition on the District level, which consists of Key Clubs from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii. For more information, please go to cnhkeyclub.org under the Recognition tab, then under Contests. Lastly, please remember to prioritize your physical and mental health during this time. I know many of us are experiencing high levels of stress and/or burnout, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself or friends for help. We’re all going through a tough time and the best that we can do is to be here for each other. I care so much about each of you and I hope you know that you can always find a family within our Division. <3

Reaching for the stars of service,

Kristen Carpio Kristen Carpio Lieutenant Governor d34n.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com

Hey guys! The first month of 2021 has been completed, congratulations you made it though! I hope you checked off some new years resolutions already, if not it’s fine you still have the whole year ahead of you. Thank you so much for attending our past events. I hope you enjoyed the service week and got boba from our past fundraiser. Also, a reminder that distinguished e-profiles are due this month, and if you are applying good luck, I know you got this! Congratulations to our LTG elect, I know you guys are in good hands. It’s crazy that’s it’s already February, so let’s make the last few months the best of this term. Also, elections may have started in your own home club, and if you are not an officer already, I highly encourage you to run. Anyways, I can not express in words how amazing you guys have been this past term, thank you for my last year ape-tastic, and remember you can reach out to me about literally anything :)

Congratulations on making it through the first month of 2021! There were definitely a lot of ups and downs but you got through it and I couldn’t be prouder :) Hopefully you were able to enjoy some boba from our fundraisers last month! If you haven’t already, I highly recommend you start your e-portfolios and applications for Distinguished, and you can always reach out to me if you need any help! Also, even though the district on-time dues deadline has passed, recruitment doesn’t stop; you can still pay your dues at any time! I want to say a big thank you to all of you attending events and remaining active. Your dedication to Key Club doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated! Members are the foundation and glue of Key Club, so without your efforts we wouldn’t be here making such a big impact!! Happy Lunar New Year to anyone who celebrates and good luck with the rest of the semester!

Hope that the new year is off to a good start for you all! I hope you all enjoyed our events such as our weekend of service and of course conclave. As this is the beginning of the end of the term, it would be a great chance to recognize our hard work throughout this term. What better way to do that than applying for our distinguished and outstanding awards, which I hope you have started. Continue serving our community as we are so close to our service hours goal and I look forward to seeing all of you at future division events. Keep on recruiting members for your clubs! Let’s reach some goals by increasing our dues paid membership and continue engaging with all of our members. Of course if you would like any help with your E-Portfolio or have any questions, feel free to reach out as I’m always happy to help.

D34N Card Making On December 18th, 2020, I attended a Division wide service event where I made scarves and cards, hosted by Jefferson and Carlmont Key Club. I thought it was pretty cool that there were two parts of the event and you were able to do one or the other. I decided to do both. During the card making portion, I made cards dedicated to seniors who needed a smile. It was a pretty fun experience since I got to decorate the card and make it look polished. Additionally, it feels rewarding that someone else who needs a smile will be getting my card. For the knitting portion, I would say that it might be my most memorable service event since it is unique from the other online service events I attended in the past. Luckly, I knew how to knit, so I had no problem making more than one scarf. Overall, this service event was a fun experience and would like to see more of these in the future. Sean Sygaco Jefferson

I had a great time at the holiday Card making and scarf knitting collab service event hosted by Carlmont Key Club and Jefferson Key Club. During the event, we made holiday cards for senior citizens and scarves for the homeless. We spent 30 minutes making holiday cards and for participants that had yarn were able to make scarves. This was a great experience for me because I didn’t know how to finger knit, but learned how to! Overall, I had a bunch a fun and I hope to see more service events like this in the future!! Irene Lee Westmoor

g and Scarf Knitting Holiday Card Making x Scarf Knitting was a cheerful, festive division-wide service event hosted by Jefferson and Carlmont. Decorating cards with holiday and winter illustrations and writing cheerful messages in the cards was enjoyable. It was nice to know that seniors at the Reunion Court of Kingwood and the Grace Care Center of Cypress would receive my cards and perhaps smile at the wintry illustration and the holiday wishes. After the Holiday Card Making segment of the event, we finger-knitted colorful scarves for Warm Up America’s Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City project. We listened to joyful holiday music throughout the event, and I appreciated the opportunity to volunteer on my first day of winter break! :D Georgie Rauls Carlmont

During the Cards and Scarves event, we wrote holiday cards for seniors in nursing homes and knitted scarves to send to the Warm Up America! Foundation. The first portion of the event was dedicated to card making. I completed one card, in which I wished the reader happy holidays and decorated by drawing holiday-themed scenery. For the rest of the event, Key Clubbers either continued to make cards or moved on to scarves. I was one of the participants who began knitting, and I was able to finish a scarf by the end of the event. The finger knitting process is simple and fun, so I was motivated to finger knit scarves and hats on my own time. Overall, the Cards and Scarves event was very enjoyable, and I look forward to taking part in future service events. Gaelle Djingueuzian Aragon

Division Bake-a -Thon At the Bake-A-Thon event, our division bonded during the holidays and made many delicious baked goods. They showed us several recipes including sugar cookies, brownies, and gingerbread cookies. This was my first time baking and we all laughed together at how we were doing while baking, whether we were doing good or struggled. Luis shared many holiday puns that were totally funny and not cringe. This event was a good way to wrap up this year and share some holiday spirit with our division. John Hillyard Aragon

Attending the Bake-A-Thon was one of my best quarantine decisions. It brought immense entertainment and joy in these lonely times at home. I learned so much about my fellow Key Clubbers and bonded with my home club officers. While not everyone baked, some made delicious brownies and cookies! One of my favorite parts was a short joke & riddle-off! This event really highlighted different ways we’re all adapting to virtual life and showed a fun way we can still “meet” and talk about how some of us can’t swim or bake!

Warm-Up America was a fun and relaxing event that I enjoyed greatly. The service event followed the weekly Wednesday key club meeting and consists of hand knitting scarves to donate to the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City. The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City was created by a foundation called “Warm Up America where their job is to provide scarves, hats, and blankets for people in order to keep them warm. We focused on scarves for this service event. During the event, members learned how to hand-knit scarves and the pattern being taught was pretty simple. While knitting the scarves, I found myself having a lot of fun just seeing what the scarf would look like. I would definitely do it again since it is so easy and knowing that my scarf would be helping someone in need was reason enough to keep knitting. Overall the event was very rewarding since I got to learn a new skill and use it to help others! Madeline Chu Carlmont

Warm Up America

Carlmont

This event was extremely relaxing to do, and the completion of it went right as scheduled. I used about half a roll of yarn to make two 5-foot long finger-knitted scarves and attached them together using a single strand of yarn woven through intermittent loops. This was definitely a new experience for me because I had never finger-knitted before, but I found the instructions simple to follow and was able to knit rather quickly. It was also fun to compare scarf lengths and colors in breakout rooms, and I absolutely loved the music played during the event (it was a mix of lofi and pop). In the end, I was able to drive my scarf up to our club dropbox, and I hope it is given to and used by someone in need of a little extra warmth this winter season. Maya Kornyeyeva Carlmont

D34 December DCM The December DCM was very informative and perfect for the holidays. It was amazing to see people from both D34N and D34S. Many people had a Charlie Brown background on their Zoom camera, which made the event feel very festive. We had a fun little game where we had to guess Christmas songs. Afterwards, we had three presentations that we could attend: “Member Recognition and Retention”, “Maximizing Your Online Key Club Experience”, and “Gift Giving 101”. As a person who struggles to find gifts for people, I found the gift giving presentation to be very helpful. Overall, I’m grateful for the effort put into this DCM to make it fun and festive!

9

Darren Chen Westmoor

The D34 December DCM was a Charlie Brown themed holiday event that members from both divisions could attend, which made it a great opportunity to meet others interested in Key Club and attend various activities with them. During this event, there were several workshops that attendees could choose from: Gift Giving 101, Maximizing Your Online Key Club Experience, and Member Recognition and Retention. I found that the two I attended were extremely informative and well structured, with slideshows that were not overcrowded with information and presenters that were constantly engaged and eager to teach others. Additionally, the main service event that earned members a half-hour of service was the Macy’s and Make-aWish Letters to Santa. I really enjoyed this service event since the online e-cards were very customizable and made me nostalgic for the holidays of my childhood when I would write a letter to Santa every year and mail it through Macy’s Mailbox to the North Pole. All in all, I found this year’s December DCM to be a cheerful and festive experience that brightened up my day and got me into the holiday spirit with its many joyous activities and the kind people that attended the event. Club Summary Aragon:

For the month of January, Aragon has continued to host weekly meetings after school on Fridays. Our officer board has worked alongside the Service & Fundraising Committee to host the Urban Ritual Boba Fundraiser. We have started to introduce an incentive program for our members where they have to reach a certain amount of service hours and attend club meetings for a prize at the end of the term. We have also attended the Service Weekend event which was a lot of fun. As of right now we are just prepping for elections.

Carlmont:

- Anna Abelgas

Over the past month of December Carlmont has been hosting weekly club meetings with social or service events attached such as our Warm Up America scarf-knitting event. We also co-hosted this event with Jefferson as a Division service event. We also had on-going monthly events such as Comfort Calls to the San Carlos Adult Community Center and Charity Miles which were both very successful! We loved participating in the division’s gift exchange and all their other events and we’re excitedly preparing for elections and currently encouraging members to run for club, division, and district positions :)

El Camino:

- Ashley Zheng

During the month of December, our club relaxed club activity to allow for members to enjoy their Winter Break. There were some club meetings during the break, but they weren’t mandatory and were really quick. Our weekly food distributions were put on halt for a little bit because of the stay at home order issued midway through December. However, as 2021 started, they are up and running again. Since December was a chance to relax and take a break, January will be when our club will pick up the pace again.

Hillsdale:

- Alex Quemuel

This past month we finished off the semester with one final meeting before finals week. We had members attending division wide events like the Cards x Scarves project and Bake-aThon. We have started planning to host our first division wide service project for this upcoming month and are working to prepare for it. We’ve also been talking more about fundraisers we could do and the process to organize one. Lastly, we’re preparing for our school’s Spring club fair day and are hoping to gain people’s interest and gain new members.

- Gwendolyn Arzaga 19

Jefferson: With Finals Week and Winter Break, December was a pretty quiet month for Jefferson Key Club. Nevertheless, we still found ways to volunteer and participate in service in our spare time. Given that it was Christmas, our members also enjoyed a month full of festive social events and gatherings just to hang out and spend time with other members from around the division. Despite the fact that our numbers will now go down every month, given that we now only have 24 dues-paid members we can report on in our monthly MRF tabs, our club collectively will continue to work hard, regardless of membership status. Jefferson Key Club will continue to foster a welcoming environment that will allow for any level of commitment to volunteering. We have enjoyed our holidays and Winter Break, and are now ready to take on a new year of service opportunities!

Lincoln

- Alex Cada

Throughout the new year, the board and I have constantly updated the members about big events such as Conclave, Weekend of Service, etc. One of the highlights from this month is that when we told them about the Bobabia Fundraise, we were excited to hear that some members went and supported the fundraiser! We are also grateful that we got to host an interclub with Lowell centered around writing Thank You Cards for Troops. Overall, it was a great first interclub - the board and I all agreed that we wanted to partner with other schools and host more events for the members of our club(and as of right now, more are on the way!) We are all looking forward to the best as we continue to stabilize and adjust into the wonderful environment at Key Club.

Lowell:

- Joanne Yen

During the month of December, Lowell participated in division-wide events such as the December DCM, productivity sessions, and Holiday Card Making + Scarf Knitting. We participated in acts of service such as Macy’s Letter Writing and Free Rice. With Free Rice we held a contest over Winter Break where the top three members on the leaderboard would receive drinks of their choice. Many of our members also attended the Candidate Training Conference and Elections Webinar within the last month to learn more about the leadership opportunities within Key. Moving forward, we are set to release a fundraiser around mid January and we will also be having an interclub with Lincoln where we will be writing cards for troops. Alongside the announcement of Conclave, we will be releasing more information about our own club elections in our next few meetings, and elections will take place around early-mid February.

Notre Dame:

- Jasmine Bao

Throughout December, NDB Key Club continued with our bi-weekly meeting schedule, but due to finals week, we had a pretty laid back month in terms of club level service projects. To allow for finals prep and studying, we only met once. However, we continued attending Division Events including Holiday-a-Thon/December DCM and Cards and Scarves. Because December was such a calm month for us, we planned to focus on increasing our service throughout January; our meetings will still include a 1-hour service opportunity at the end. We plan to continue with this as well as attend Division Events throughout the month, and look forward to continue serving!

- Alyssa Enriquez

20

San Mateo:

Throughout the month of December San Mateo Key Club took a bit of a break for the month. In the beginning of the month we had a successful club meeting but then our officer board made the decision to pause meetings for the rest of the month due to dead week, finals week, and then winter break. Even though meetings were paused, we still didn’t stop promoting many of the events that were going on in December such as the two productivity sessions, the numerous socials, and all the service projects. Additionally, our officer board started planning the upcoming semester.

Sequoia:

-Danielle Richards

For the month of December, Sequoia’s Key Club had its final meeting of the year as our members prepared themselves for finals week. We heard back as well as reached out to organizations we are hoping to partner with. We plan on doing park clean-ups, Valentine cards, and food bank distributions.

- Sharon Portillo

South San Francisco:

For the month of January, we have been attending different Division events such as MR Recognition and Graphics Workshop, and the Bobabia Fundraiser for PTP! We are excited for Conclave and we are getting delegates ready for Conclave as well! In preparation for the new term, we held an Officer Workshop for potential candidates in our club. We are also thinking about/planning for DCON 2021 and whether or not we are able to do so! We are also resuming Campus Gardening at school to plant native plants around the campus! We are excited for the month of February as we hold club elections, continue holding gardening events, attending Division events, and more! We hope that you guys have a great start to your year!

Westmoor:

- Caroline Narcisco

For the first month of 2021, we were planning and preparing for the next term. We are excited to have our interns and just seeing all the amazing work they have done. We can’t wait to see the leaders they would become. Shout out to Amy, Isabella, Jason, Nicole, and Timothy for being so amazing. For elections and interviews we hope to conduct that starting this month, and finalize everything by the end of this month as well. We hope to plan more interclub, so if anyone is interested feel free to contact me. We also collaborated with other clubs in our school to create webinars to help all of our members make the best out of the new year. We are super excited and hope to end this better in the best way possible and make the most out of these last few months.
