Banana Bulletin 2019-2020
DNE MESSAGE: Happy New Years Aqua Apes! It's so genuinely crazy to think that we're nearing the end of the 2019-2020 term with Conclave, preparations for elections, and DCON 2020 coming up pretty soon. Besides Key Club, WELCOME to a new year! I hope that 2019 was a rewarding/ fulfilling experience, a journey of growth, and crazy new events that will hopefully make your 2020 as positive and genuine as possible. I also hope you all had an amazing holiday and new year! It's that time to create your new year's resolution, so make sure to set your own personal goals that could help you on the long run and maybe finish some of your goals from last year. I know we all tend to mostly forget our New Year's Resolutions less than a month in the new year, but this year I challenge you all to push through and complete them! Personally, I've been working on improving the way I could grow as a person in a positive light. This Winter Break actually helped me de-stress and relax; although the " grind never stops" it's very important to take some time for yourself and recollect your thoughts. Can you believe that DCON 2020 is only 2 months away? I hope to see you all there :) Always remember, service never sleeps!

Greetings my beloved Aqua Ape Family! Happy New Year! Hopefully you all are excited for another year of spectacular service! With December having passed and only a few months left in the term, now is a spectacular time to begin preparing for club elections and to finalize your applications for District Contests! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding these contests, or other recognition programs, please be sure to reach out to Member Recognition Coordinator Ellen Batsuuri (d34n. cnhkc. mrc@gmail. com). Additionally, I highly encourage each club to start, or better yet continue, fundraising for District Convention to mitigate hotel and registration fees for your membership. It is an emotional, moving, and inspiring event and I hope to see a ton of you Aqua Apes there! Regarding our division goals, Division 34 North, as of December 10th, has amassed approximately 6,193 service hours out of our 10,000 service hour goal! Also, we have raised a phenomenal $6000: let’s keep up this fantastic work! Finally, I have yet another quote for you all to ponder: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” (Lao Tzu). I recognize that many of you have extremely ambitious aspirations and oftentimes the mere magnitude of the goal can seem intimidating. However, I urge you all not to focus on the final product or result, rather focus on the smaller steps required to arrive at that destination. Even only one action everyday can amount to immense progress over time. Do great things my fellow Aqua Apes!
Serving with all my heart,
Emmanuel Flores

Happy Holidays Aqua Apes!
How're you doing, Aqua Apes?
I hope everyone is enjoying their winter break so far and is excited for the New Year. For those of you who went to the Holiday-A-Thon I hope you had a fun time and enjoyed all the different workshops that were available. Thank you to all who went to the K-Mart Holiday Service Event. I could tell all the children and their parents were happy to receive new clothes for the holidays. We have a lot of different service events planned for the New Year and I would highly encourage all of you to attend those service events. If you plan on attending the upcoming service events don’ t forget to record the hours you served at the event with your respective secretaries. Thank you for all your hard work towards our Division Goals as well! Keep it up everyone :)!
I hope you've had a restful Winter Break! With a new decade and semester ahead of us, there are so many opportunities to have a fresh start and do even better this year! Setting small goals to accomplish each month is an easy way to achieve a long-term goal that has always seemed daunting. Along with the new year, DCON is only 3 months away! I hope you're all planning to attend this super fun event; it'll be a celebration of all the hard work we've put into this term, and I personally can't wait! As always, feel free to contact myself or anybody in our Key Club family if you have any questions or just want to talk. We're all here for you! :)

Club Summaries
Missing: Burlingame, Mills, and Sequoia PLEASE PRESIDENTS TURN THEM IN!
Aragon | Ellen Batsuuri: This month Aragon hosted the December DCM and we were able to raise over $100 for PTP! Thank you to everyone who came and also made the plushies as well as scrunchies :) Our club had also attended Kmart Shopping this month and hope to start a couple of interclub events with clubs at our school so we can make key club better known and hopefully recruit new members as well :) we are planning out the logistics of who will be attending conclave in this upcoming month as well as potentially hosting an officer workshop for our club so many of the new members know what an officer position would entail if they do decide to run for a position :)
Carlmont |Milad Shafaie: This past month, Carlmont volunteered at several local service events, one of which was the NutCracker Tea Party at the San Carlos Adult Community Center. Additionally, we held an inter-club service event with our IERI partner, Notre Dame, at the annual Safeway Feed the Need Food Drive, where volunteers advertised Safeway’ s Thanksgiving Food Drive to shoppers. We also continued to raise funds for the upcoming District Convention by selling boba out our last home football game of the season. Last but not least, we fund-raised for the Eliminate Project by holding a gift-wrapping station at a local Barnes and Noble. Club members wrapped presents for shoppers, and collected donations to help support treatment for Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. We look forward to continuing to serve our local community the rest of the holiday season!
El Camino | Kyle Yoshida: For the past month, El Camino has not attended as many events as we would have liked; however, for the month of December we have several events that we plan on attending such as the K-Mart Event, the D34 Holiday-a-thon, Food Packing and hopefully a couple more. We are also planning on having a bonding event with Jefferson and Westmoor. As well as getting our board back up to speed we have been attempting to find potential members for our board for the coming term. Overall, there are many things that we can improve upon and we hope to do so as the end of the term quickly approaches.
5
Hillsdale | Teanna Bautista-Leung: Over the past month, Hillsdale has attended the Walk to End Alzheimer's event where we helped clean up at the end of the event. We also had two members attend the November DCM where we got to talk to and meet members from all over the division. At the DCM we also attended a member retention workshop hosted by our amazing EA, Kristen, and got to learn more about how we can keep members involved in the club. One idea Kristen had was to have a Secret Snowflake as a club bonding event, and that's what we did! This really helped members get to know the other people in the club, and got people talking to others outside of their normal friend group. Also in November, we attended a Costume & Prop Making Party for the Holiday Festival of Dance at Beresford, the Safeway Food Drive, and a Surfers Beach Coastal Clean-Up. For the upcoming month, we hope to attend more division events, and hold several fundraisers for DCON.
Jefferson | Princess Sanchez: This month of November, Jefferson’s Key Club participated in volunteering events such as San Francisco Light the Night, Coastal Clean Up and Brave the Bay Run. It is refreshing to know that dedicated key clubbers are still willing to go volunteer even during the school year! This month has been very successful as we volunteer together and spend quality time with our fellow key clubbers after our events. Not only do we bond, we also have fun while volunteering and giving back to our community. It is exciting to see new friendships and bonds grow as new key clubbers join our community! We are still actively trying to find more volunteering events we can attend.
Lowell | Adeline Nocon: ‘Tis the season Lowell Key Club has been getting festive with all our past and upcoming events. Starting with our November DCM, which I think turned out pretty successful with the amount of money we fundraised and the fun time we had with good food and friends as we gathered the division to make holiday cards for the elderly. At Grace Cathedral, we helped decorate and set up the World Tree of Hope, ironing and folding paper cranes. The next weekend followed with SantaFest, personally my favorite event, where we worked with gingerbread houses, candy, a froyo machine, legos, children and Santa Claus. To wrap up our holiday spirit before break we plan to have our last meeting of the semester, holiday party, and Secret Santa exchange tomorrow, following with the Parol Lantern Festival this weekend.
Notre Dame | Kristen Carpio: During this past month, we submitted most of our club's dues, and we plan to continue to submit even more as we encourage more people to join the club. We had a member attend the November DCM at Lowell High School and she had a really fun time. We also had members volunteer at the Safeway Feed the Need Drive where they passed out flyers to shoppers and encouraged them to donate to the Second Harvest Food Bank. We hope to volunteer even more in the coming months and attend more division events as a club.

Saint Ignatius | Jacob Lee: Wuz good y’all, hope you guys are having a blessed December November was a pretty uneventful month for us, as our club was busy with applications and exams. We sent seven of our members to the Lowell November DCM, which was the first event for three of them. We also sent a few volunteers to the Chinatown Self-Help for the Elderly Thanksgiving banquet. We’ve also been participating in SI’s holiday canned food and clothing drive. In the upcoming month, we are planning a few interclub Christmas events as well as volunteering at some Saint Ignatius hosted events.
San Mateo | Ryan Zhang: This month San Mateo Key Club sorted the more than 1000 books we received during our book drive and delivered them to the Children's Book Project in San Francisco. We also plan on attending the upcoming Holiday-a-thon in December.
South San Francisco | Carl Conste: During November, we had members attend a multitude of events. From CTC to Brave the Bay to the Project Read Trivia Challenge to Santa Comes to Town, our members attended them all. For December, we plan to have multiple fundraisers to help with DCON expenses as well as attending the DCMs for the South San Francisco Kiwanis Club and Division 34 Kiwanis. We also plan on attending our annual food packaging service event in partnership with our local Kiwanis club. We also plan on further educating our members about officer positions to gauge interest for possible candidates for next term. Additionally, Carl and Queenie have started to help clubs look over their MRFs to help improve their AAR score for Distinguished and Diamond Distinguished Recognition.
Westmoor | Angela Chew: For the past month, we’ ve been focusing on sending our members to service events and bonding with them too! We attended the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the Jefferson Union High School District beach cleanup, and Safeway Feed the Need. For November’s member of the month, we gave the recognition to Florence Thwe for all of her hard work and spirit she puts into the club. We’re also ending the year with a mini-potluck and giving out our secret santa gifts! In the next few months, we’re focusing on DCON registration/fundraising, club elections, and the inter-club bonding event with Jefferson and El Camino!

Santafest has always been my favorite event of the year! It’ s fun, festive, and the venue is pretty nice. We basically just helped families get started on their houses, refilled candy, and transported the houses to the wrapping station. Also, if you were sly enough, you could slide some candy so that was fun too! -Christina Leung We got to volunteer at SantaFest (aka my favorite event every year)! Our club got to help kids create gingerbread houses, lego towers, slime, and even got all-you-can-eat LACTOSE-FREE ice cream. We spent most of our time at the wrapping station where we secured their gingerbread houses with some plastic and festive ribbons. It made me super happy to see the children smile when we passed their creations back to them. Getting covered in frosting and stepping on candies was worth it because we got the chance to support all of the children there! -Jennifer Phan SantaFest is my first and favorite service event our club has done and I’ ve participated in since freshman year. With the chaos of children taking photos with Santa, making Christmas crafts, and the piles of candy for gingerbread house making it was a very fun event. Packaging and then finding children’ s gingerbread houses among the hundreds we packaged was not the easiest. With our alphabetical organization and communication, we were able to deliver them in a timely manner. While that part of the event could get a little hectic it was all fun working with my friends and seeing all the gingerbread houses the kids made, helping them make it, and seeing their little smiles with all the candy and Christmas spirit around them. -Adeline Nocon

San Francisco Light the Night I liked being able to help out past survivors and people affected by leukemia or lymphoma, the smile that was provided by the batting cage, giant connect four or the large jenga was cool but the best part was giving out the glow sticks to the kids and seeing the sparkles in their eyes. -Luis Solidum
I really enjoyed knowing that the small actions that our members did in the kid zone could bring smiles and fun interactions with the children and subsequently the parents who could have been possible survivors of cancer at time. -Loubert Manasan

On Saturday December 14th I attended my last ever Kmart Shopping Event with this lovely organization. While it was very bittersweet this service event has been my all time favorite and was personally my key club moment as a freshmen. I remember how nervous I was to be paired with a child and a bit horrified because I thought I would have to pay the $100 until one of the officers that year had clarified I’ m not the one paying hehe. Funnily enough, the child that I had been assigned my freshmen year I was able to see her again this year in my senior year and it really brought it full circle! Seeing these children come in and being able to be that person who helps them find the warm and much needed clothes and materials that they need was very heartwarming. Seeing how grateful these children and their families were and having their parents come up to me afterwards giving their thanks to us volunteers and the lovely Ms. Hope (I FORGOT HER LAST NAMEAH) reaffirmed to me how lucky I was to be able to help these children out even if it was as simple as being their personal shopper for three hours :) these kids are so amazingly funny and super sweet and I really will miss this event and can hopefully come help out next year <3 I highly encourage members to come to this event especially! It’ s very heart warming especially since you are able to see the impact you are making on these young kids and their families on the spot. -Ellen Batsuuri | Aragon: Kmart
Although it started off slow for me, I became comfortable with asking shoppers if they would like to help our cause. It was awkward at first but I needed to remember that it was for a special cause. I stood in front of Safeway asking shoppers and informing them on the flyers we were giving out. Shoppers only needed to take a flyer and ask at checkout to scan a barcode and their donation was submitted. Overall, I believe this was a good experience for me because I was able to step out of my comfort zone and help a greater cause. -Chris Huynh | El Camino: Safeway drive This event was at the Beresford Recreation Center where the people there kind of helped make costumes, paint props & bring stuff back & forth, and build up things like costume racks etc. I didn't really get to interact with most people but it was a pretty interesting experience, but basically most of my jobs I got, isolated me from everyone else in the main room. I do not know if that was intentional or not, but tomorrow I will be doing 1 more hr. At 11/17/19. It was nice seeing all these middle schoolers, parents & high schoolers working together to make this holiday festival of dance a good day. -Andre Miyago | Hillsdale: Costume and Prop Making Party for the Holiday Festival of Dance
At the Jefferson Union School District beach cleanup, there were a lot of students from the different schools in our district! This was the first time our school district decided to have a district wide volunteering. I was amazed to see the amount of people that came out and helped serve their community! We helped clean up most parts of Pacifica. We found a lot of cigarette buds and litter on the sidewalks and the parking lot. It was shocking to see how much trash gets thrown on to the ground and how that affects (or effects idk which one it is lol) our environment. Although it was a cold day, it was great coming outside to help change our community for the better and I hope that the school district does more kinds of service like this in the future! -Angela Chew | Westmoor: JUSHD Beach Clean-up During the beach clean up, I’ ve encountered an immense amount of wonderful, kindhearted people. Each individual who’ ve sacrificed their day to save the earth little by little made a change. There was a surprising amount of litter ranging from cigarette buds to plastic in general. It saddens me that we, humans, have polluted our earth. Nevertheless, I had an enjoyable time there with many other peers and volunteering at this beach clean up was unforgettable. -Arian Villena | Westmoor: JUSHD Beach Clean-up
We were able to let seniors at Meals on Wheels know that our club cares about them winter by making holiday cards! It was great to be able to get creative with the rest of our members and show our artistic side. I felt good knowing that our cards made a difference in the lives of so many of their community seniors! -Jennifer Phan | Lowell: Meals on Wheels Holiday cards For our club’s November DCM, we chose our activity to be a fun and easy way to give back to our communities, by writing holiday cards for those involved with Meals on Wheels. I really enjoyed letting my creative side reign free and draw and color. I felt just like a little kid again! My club and I really enjoyed not only making these cards but also bonding with other members of our division simultaneously. -Samantha Ta | Lowell: Meals on Wheels Holiday cards
DIVISION UPDATES This month our division had a lot of service events such as the K-Mart Holiday Shopping event where volunteers shopped with underprivileged children and helped them pick out clothes and toys for the holiday season. The December DCM was hosted by Aragon, and members were able to make plushies to be donated to a local children’s hospital and bond with other Key Clubbers during the event. Also, the first ever D34 Holiday-A-Thon was extremely successful, and members had the opportunity to attend workshops, participate in cookie decorating, and a fun karaoke session with members in both D34 North and South! Overall this month was packed with fun events that the whole division enjoyed, and we look forward to another exciting month ahead of us!
