Lieutenant Governor’s Message Happy October aqua apes! I hope the beginning of the school has been treating you well, and even if it hasn’t, I know you will find a way to enjoy and relax this month. Most of you have already or have your club rush/club fair coming up along with your chance to expand your club and recruit new members. But, after you get new members, how do you ensure that they will stay in your club and grow more active throughout your term? Retainment is one of the most tricky problems that officers face, and a few tips I have for you are as follows: Keep your meetings interesting so members want to come every time (you can use incentives like food, play games or icebreakers, keep it suspenseful with monthly recognition, etc) HAVE ENTHUSIASM! Members will feed off of your energy whenever you present or talk to them, so make sure you are presenting yourself with a lot of SPIRIT! BEE different from other service clubs. Provide many opportunities that are unique to Key Club (such as Fall Rally North) to separate yourself from other service clubs. As I just mentioned, Fall Rally North is coming up as one of the most unique events that Key Club has. This year, Fall Rally North will be held on October 21st at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom from 10:00 AM until midnight and provides a great opportunity for you and your club to get more involved with the division and more! If you want more details or are interested in this amazing event, contact any member of the DLT or your club officers! What else is October known for besides Halloween (and Trick-or-Treat UNICEF)? DUES! Remember that dues season officially starts on OCTOBER 1ST and prices vary between clubs, so get ready! Lastly, but most importantly, remember to take care of yourself. If you are going through a hard time and have a very busy schedule, remember to take a breath and relax. Taking care of your body and your mind is what is most important, and whether you believe it or not, it comes before your school work and your Key Club duties. So if you find yourself going through a stressful time, feel free to contact me or another member on the DLT. We are always here to talk! That’s it for this month everyone, I hope you all have a productive and enjoyable October! Please contact me if you have any questions :-) See you all soon! With the spirit of service, Kayla Tai

Over the past month we had our Freshmen Orientation and volunteered at the Giants Race. We have also begun to hold our meetings with a good group ested freshmen. As we collect dues I hope our new and returning members will actively participate in events.

Aragon School has started and so has Aragon Key Club! We began the school year with Service events such as the Bayfront Cleanup at Ryder Park and the Division wide event Walk to End Alzheimer's. Our Key Club also had our Club fair where we had a ton of sign ups due to our banana attracting attention to our table. We are looking forward to service events such as the Autumn Moon festival and other events such as the September DCM and our annual Club Social. Alex Ma

San Mateo

This month, San Mateo's Key Club has been focused on setting up all of our systems for the school year, as many changes have been made within the structure to better suit our members. We have also been focused on publicizing the club and attaining new members. We are doing this by creating our website, increasing our social media presence, and preparing to present at our school's Volunteer Faire. As this month ends, we will begin finalizing the year's service goals and begin preparing for these along with FRN.

Westmoor This month Westmoor Key Club has been getting ready for the year. On September 1st, our school held our annual Club Fair and recruited many new members. A week after, on September 8th, we had our first meeting of the year, and on September 15th, we had our second meeting. During the meetings we've been advertising Fall Rally North and have gained the interest of many members. Right now we have approximately 20 members going. Also, this weekend we will be having a volunteering event at the Holy Trinity Church Food Pantry, This is a long term volunteering event that is available for our members. -Samantha Chen

The volunteers and I refilled the dishes of

food when needed with chips, popcorn, pretzels, crackers, cookies, and cupcakes. Many of us were going back and forth to refill quite often as dozens of families attended this event. Luckily, the food inventory room was air conditioned during this very warm day, so this was my favorite spot. In addition to this task, we also interacted with the kids at the craft tables which included face painting, coloring, and play-doh. The members who managed the face painting did a terrific job. - Belinda Yu, Carlmont

SSF Beach Cleanup

On September 2, South City’s Key Club

went to the beach cleanup at Rockaway Beach! Together the 15 of us picked up cigarette butts, trash, panties and cursed photos. We started at 9 and ended at 11! -Kristie Poon, South San Francisco

ents Campaign and Coffee Hour with The Humane League

I spent an evening in a coffee shop in San

Francisco with The Humane League this month. During this time, I worked on THL's 88% campaign which aims to alleviate the suffering of millions of chickens who are raised for meat. I contributed my time by making phone calls to several Olive Garden restaurants located in the Bay Area, publishing reviews on social media, and writing handwritten letters to two of the largest restaurant corporations in the world: Darden and CKE Franchise. These chickens are individuals who feel joy and pain just like us, and they deserve to be treated like so. -Belinda Yu, Carlmont

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

At the Walk to End Alzheimer's, we cheered on

walkers as well as helped those who were lost or needed help with directions. We were given big purple signs to promote awareness as well as help guide people to their correct routes. Additionally, we were given shirts and water bottles as a token of gratitude for volunteering. -Richard Tang, Aragon

Sweet Farm

This was my first time volunteering at

Sweet Farm in Half Moon Bay. I helped harvest green and purple cabbages, and separate the outer leaves from the center of the cabbages. The outer leaves were saved to be fed to the animals living on the farm. I also turned the soil in preparation for new crops. During this, I was able to meet many volunteers from different areas in the Bay Area. This was one of my favorite volunteer events, being able to observe all the growing beautiful plants and to meet the animals living on the farm. I am still in awe from meeting a beautiful and loving cow named Gizmo. I also learned that goats really like having their head scratched. -Belinda Yu, Carlmont

Senior Appreciation Day

Since I am still in town before I head off to college, I had the opportunity to vol-

unteer at Senior Appreciation Day. At this event, a Kiwanian spent their afternoon with about seven other seniors at each of the nine tables. They indulged in teaparty-themed treats which included cookies, cakes, sandwiches, and tea. During preparation, I helped arrange the treats on the dessert stands and the sandwiches on the plates. While the guests enjoyed their meal and played games, I refilled the water and tea, and cleared finished plates. I had the most fun helping in the kitchen to ensure that each plate was ready to be served -Belinda Yu Carlmont

San Carlos Campout

On August 18-19, the city of San Carlos held a family campout, where familes

can get together, watch movies, play games, and have a good time. Carlmont High School Key club took part in this by setting up a tent where kids can play board games, facepaint, and get temporary tattoos. We met up at the campsite at 5 to set up the tent and the games. Then the event started at 5:30, and there were already kids swarming the table. There were many obsticles along the way, such as not enough materials, but the club persevered and made our own materials from scratch. Finally the event ended at 8:30, at which time the club had to clean up and regroup. -Karan Gaglani, Sequoia

Septemb The Division 34 North Sep-

tember Division Council Meeting, held in South San Francisco, saw a huge amount of members, new and returning, come to learn about Key Club events like Fall Rally North and Region Training Conference. I met a lot of new people that had never been to a DCM before, and I also got to learn spirit chants that I previously did not know. The boba fundraiser for PTP turned out quite well, and it was a great idea considering that most of us love boba. Carlmont turned out to be still in the lead for banana points which was great news to hear and South City Key Club had 31 members come which is an amazing turnout. Overall, it was both a very impactful and fun, light-hearted meeting. -Rebecca Jiang, Carlmont

1100 On Saturday, September 2nd, South City's Key Club went to Rockaway Beach from 1000 8-11AM. There were about 15 members including manly new freshman which was nice. We walked around and picked up trash, including about 600 cigarette butts. After we finished we had some bonding time for us to better know the freshman. We finished at 900 11 AM.
