PROJECT OVERVIEW

REFLECTION

POTENTIAL IDEAS

Conferences are an excellent opportunity for people to learn, collaborate and engage. Design students have been tasked with creating and designing a confrence about a topic of their choice. They will decided the speakers, theme, and all needed materials for the confrence. I want my conference to be somehow relating to books and reading. I am a very passionate lover of literature so I will have a strong attachment to this conference if it is about something I have stake in. I also would love to involve the community in some aspect.

TOPIC OVERVIEW

LIBRARIES: it’s more than just books.

I am going to focus on reading, specifically narrowing in on libraries and the importance of a community space. A convention for librarians and book lovers on how to improve their community libraries. Libraries have evolved into community centers for different cities & a conference would be a great way for different cities to come together and share their methods. I am also a big advocate for reading and literacy as a whole so this will be a topic I am personally invested in.

COMMON THEMES

A major common theme in these TEDtalks is the importance of early access to reading. Children really benefit from access to learning at a young age. So libraries and their programs are vital for families in the community. Another common theme is that libraries are one of the only places to exist without spending money. It is a community space that accepts all who enter.

LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA

Winner of the 2020 AIA/ALA Library Building Award, the Billie Jean King Main Library in downtown Long Beach, California, welcomes nearly 1,000 patrons each day who engage in learning opportunities that forge new bonds among the community. The 93,500-squarefoot library continues the Long Beach Public Library’s 100-year commitment to equitable access to information and collaboration in a truly innovative space. And it is just a half mile walk to the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center where larger lectures can take place.

WHERE?

Kaylee Cart / VISC 302 / Conference / 07

AUDIENCE

Why do people go to conferences? People will attend my conference with the goal of learning new library ideas to bring back to their own community. They will leave with a toolkit to improve the programs at their local library. What will they expect to get out of your conference? They should expect to learn about many different resources and ideas for community out reach. The goal would be for anyone to be able to walk away with new methods that would hopefully adapt in order to benefit their community. What are some ways you can meet those expectations? After the conference is over, there will be further opportunities for help and advice as these new methods are being utilized in the different communities. Who will attend your conference? This conference will be designed with librarians in mind. It will be for anyone with a passion for community outreach but particularly for those who run smaller local programs.
