The article explores the language of flavor and how that can affect perception. It explains how sensory evaluation can create consistency among brands as well as how it can force you to slow down to appreciate what you are eating. Assigning language to taste and smell is realy hard to do. Everyone’s flavor experience is unique and intimate. Sharing something you love is remarkably vulnerable, especially when your experience can differ from those you are closest to. This has created a trend of shying away from discussion of specific flavors. All the things you enjoyed are colored by past experiences – nostalgia plays a huge role in flavor profiles.
Taste Test: I learned to take candy tasting as seriously as wine tasting. What I discovered surprised me.

TAKEAWAYS
Flavor Experience
When tasting, putting language to the experience can let you know what you specifically like and dislike about a food. Sensory tasting makes you slow down and appreciate the tastes. Otherwise, you may not pay much attention to what things really taste like.
Aroma Sweet Salty
Flavor is a language in itself.
Distinct
Taste is often colored by your past experience, nostalgia plays a huge role in what we like or dislike. Therefore, everyone likes different things because we have different experiences.

CONCEPT STATEMENTS
Sensory Unique
The language behind flavor is something that must be learned to properly discuss and appreciate flavor profiles. Flavor is characterized by past experiences – likes and dislikes are directly correlated to previous exposures.

CONCEPTS TO EXPLORE IN SKETCHING
Play with the nostolgic elements that flavor holds. Show the correlation between flavor and exprience. How can you show flavor visually? Direct: mouth, tounge, candy, eating Indirect: juxtaposing “sweet” and “salty” things that may not be edible but still have that same connotation. Typography crafted using actual candy. References to video game graphics – Candy Crush.

CHANGE
DEEPER
Using a layered paper affect, I would be able to lean into the more to the story metaphor. The article talks a lot about how flavors can taste different depending on the person. So each candy can be related to a different experience. The silhouette with layered paper could showcase this.

REPRESENTATIVE
Forming the headline out of actual food would be a unique solution. It could show how the sweets can take on different forms and representions depending on what they are paired with. It also would be a nice artistic way to draw the viewer in aesthetically.

PATTERN
SIMILARITIES
A big aspect of the article was the importance of all the candy tasting the same no matter what factory it was made in. Ex: all M&Ms taste the same. Having a grasp on the language of flavor is key to doing this well. So, using a repetitive pattern would symbolize this well. I also thing using the style of Candy Crush could be interesting conceptually.
