WILL AMERICANS LOSE THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE IN THE PANDEMIC?:

The safest way to cast a ballot will very likely be by mail. But with opposition from the president, limited funding & time running out, will that option be available?

THE BASICS T

he article covers how Covid is is affecting the voting process and how delays with mail in ballots are causing thousands of votes to not get counted - this is a pressing issue with the presidential election coming up this fall. The safest way to cast a ballot will very likely be by mail. But with opposition from the president, limited funding & time running out, will that option be available? The article begins with explaining how issues with mail-in ballots have already affected the primary elections this last spring. In Milwaukee, the typical 100 mail-in ballot requests a day rose to 7 or 8 thousand requests a day.

OPENING SPREAD SKETCHES: 08/26/2020 I wanted to get as many ideas out of my brain as I could. I really liked the process of sketching the spreads out. It helped me consider things I typically would not have thought of. I used annotations to identify everything.

OPENING SPREAD CONCEPTS: 08/31/2020 I thought it was interesting how some of my physical sketches did not translate correctly digitally. But moving into the digital with ideas already written down was very nice. I had some trouble with my first open spread ideas. I’m honestly, not the biggest fan of many of them. I organized the spreads by the different concepts I considered.

CONCEPT: MAILBOX

CONCEPT: VOTER

CONCEPT: MASK

REFINED SPREADS: 09/02/2020

I think this was when I had my breakthrough of sorts. I had not been too happy with what I had been making so I sat down for hours to create these new spreads. Some stemmed from previous ideas but others were from scratch. I almost stopped before making the last spread which is the one I ended up going with so I am very thankful I pushed myself to create it.

PARAGRAPH BREAKS, TOOL KITS, & SPREAD THUMBNAILS: 09/07/2020

I enjoyed this excercise & feel like I got a lot from it. I had never really considered how much impact the paragraph breaks reall have. It visually can set the tone for the whole article. I chose to go with the classic space between paragraphs because I thought I gave my article the formal & offical tone it needed. I also enjoyed the tool kits & the brainstorming it forced me to go through. My background of design is in yearbook and it brought me back to my days of making a style guide. The layout thumbnails were also vastly helpful. This project has given me a new appreciation for sketching out layouts.

3 FULL 4-PAGE SPREADS ROUGH DRAFT: 09/09/2020 I think this is where my project finally looks like it’s coming together. For this class, I went in for inperson crits & it was so helpful. I have gained a newfound appreciation for inperson feedback. Additionally, getting to print my pages allowed me to see everything in a different way. It was very helpful.

2 REFINED 4-PAGE SPREADS: 09/14/2020 For the two versions of the spreads, I had a few ideas that I had to try out on the second set of spreads. I needed to see if these changes would work. I tried some different background colors & a smaller columns. These changes were not successful but I am still glad I tried them.

JUSTIFICATION SETTINGS: 09/14/2020

This was a very helpful exercise. I did not know much about what goes into justifucation settings so I am glad to have learned a lot more about it.

REFINED FINAL SPREADS: 09/16/2020

The last few pieces of this project are coming together. Just a few more refinements from these spreads. During one on one crits, I got some great feedback about minor things to edit & refine before the final is due.

FINAL SPREADS: 09/21/2020

In the end, I am very proud of my final spreads. I enjoyed this project a whole lot. Getting to work on a project that almost feels “real makes it so much more enjoyable. Getting to see my own work in an environment that could be applicable to my future is great motivation. I love seeing how far my spreads grew from my first drafts of the opener. I love seeing the growth & refinement of this project.
